EXPLORING A CAREER IN THE FASHION Few things change faster than the latest fads of fashion. Much like art, it‘s a slice of culture that allows people the individuality of expression. Fashion represents more than just clothing or the trends portrayed in magazines. It is exceptionally suited to meet individual tastes, backgrounds, preferences, personalities and budgets. Some folks even swear by certain styles based on astrology. Upon exploration of the fashion industry, there are many branches. Truly, the fashion business continues to grow and evolve, going back many centuries. As new inventions and styles emerge, the ever-evolving cycle keeps fashion fresh, exciting and sometimes shocking. These days, an individual no longer has to be just another pretty face to emerge as a fashion mogul. People typically think of the fashion industry in terms of the traditional careers, such as becoming a model, designer or perhaps a writer for a famous fashion magazine. However, there are so many more undiscovered opportunities available. Because fashion is a broad and necessary part of society, it offers abundant careers that run the gamut of ingenious. Whether you are a budding college student, a stay-at-home parent, a self-proclaimed “fashionista”, or an entrepreneur who is contemplating a career change the world is your marketplace. Everyone wears clo-

thes. And even someone with no sense of style can become immersed in the industry, either by opening an online store, writing about fashion, or connecting like minds on a professional level. Therefore, nearly everyone needs the fashion industry. From the plain polo shirt to the wildest designer dress; accessories or lavish wedding apparel – there is a market that appeals to the product or service you offer. You just need to know what to do next. Fortunately, the era of the Internet has opened up a worldwide of possibilities. Literally. No longer does the small town girl need to feel inferior if she doesn’t have access to the same possibilities as the uptown girl from Manhattan. Virtually anyone who has a strong yearning to express creativity through fashion can take steps to find a dream career doing exactly what they love. Even if you are not so interested in fashion itself – but rather, the business aspect of it – the fashion industry is undeniably a highly marketable and fun place to be. And by the way, fashion is not just for women anymore. Many men have gravitated toward this business, too. Wake up and discover a heart-throbbing feeling of enjoyment when you go to work every day. You can and will, if you truly want it.

‚We Ain’t Yours To Tame‘ is the name under which Daniel Cabrera presented his graduate collection earlier this year. The Mexican born designer completed fashion school at Design Department Duesseldorf university in Germany with a collection inspired in his roots back from the country that saw him grow until five years ago when he decided to move to Europe to pursue his dream to become a fashion designer.

IN HIS CONCEPT FOR THE COLLECTION IS STATED:

“Is the beauty beyond the chains, the remnants of my culture, the beauty of a Phoenix re-born from the ashes, from the weapons once used to enslave us by others, hungry for power and delighted by the shine of our precious metals and stones, by the richness in color of the plumage that covered us, not different from the present day, on which oil and resources hunt down entire nations. Is the beauty of the blood shed by my ancestors defending and claiming back their freedom and succeeding with sticks and stones, the same blood of those who, despite the circumstances, never let their roots die, neither in spirit nor in existence. This is a homage to my people. It is a recognition of the pride that comes with inheriting their strength and their passi-

on, their fierceness and their rich culture. A culture which others have tried, still try and will again try to conquer, to tear apart. But even if they succeed, we shall rise up once again and rebuild from the rubble. For this collection, I took inspiration from one of the many examples of cultures being overtaken by others: Mexico, where my own roots lie. I am proud of its perseverance to stay true to itself and the courage that drove its people to take up arms against those who came into their world to enslave them, steal and loot their most precious treasures with the promise of being sent by the gods. I am proud of the courage that it took in order to fight for their freedom and gain their independence back, one that should have never been in the hands of any other nation.“

HOW FULFILMENT AND HAPPINESS INCREASE BECAUSE OF CREATIVITY When thinking of happiness, it‘s often assumed that such a condition is secured by the generous supply of material things and experiences. If one’s basic needs are met with a surplus to spare, this will aid in a feeling of wellbeing and security, thus making one happy. Of course one often hears the cliché “Money doesn’t buy happiness”, but how many really believe that? Conversely why is it that so many financially fortunate people who seem to have it all, remain unfulfilled and will claim to be basically unhappy? So what’s going on? Why is there still such a prevalent sense of boredom and emptiness in so many people’s lives, especially in the relatively wealthy first world. Some suggest that the secret lies in whether one is a consumer or a creator. The procurement

of things brings with them that craved for feeling of fulfilment and subsequent happiness, it is believed. Consuming, it’s thought will fill the vacuous cavities inside one and thus satiate those feelings of emptiness and purposelessness that so many feel in modern secular societies. The problem with such a solution though, is that it lacks any challenge or struggle. It lacks the feeling of overcoming obstacles and exceeding oneself. Some research suggests that a better route to fulfilment and happiness is through engaging in a creative process. One can achieve a deeper sense of satisfaction through the mastery of new skills and setting oneself new challenges. Experts Tamlin S. Conner, Colin G. DeYoung and Paul J. Silvia, contend that there is a link between creative activity and one’s emotional state. Their research focused on the effect that creativity had in producing a feeling of wellbeing and happiness as opposed to emotional well-being having produced a proclivity for creativity. This distinction is significant because it suggests that creative activity in itself can make one feel more fulfilled and therefore happier. Their findings also seem to suggest that even though popular culture links creativity to negative emotional states like madness or sadness, their results suggested that for most people creative endeavors produce emotionally positive results. This is good news for most people because it suggests that taking up a creative pursuit is a much better contender for one’s happiness rather than reaching for one’s credit card to buy that must have sundry in order to feel good today. Instead one simply has to paint a picture, or learn a new language, or engage is whatever creative endeavor that takes one’s fancy.

THE BEAUTIFUL BALEARIC ISLAND OF IBIZA, SURROUNDED BY THE SPARKLING WATERS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN. ITâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S THE IDEAL SETTING IN WHICH TO EXCHANGE THE CHANGEABLE CLIMES FOR A BIT OF MEDITERRANEAN SUN.

THE BAY OF SAN ANTONIO It‘s no secret that Ibiza attracts crowds drawn to the bustling beaches and lively bars. Nowhere is this more evident than in San Antonio Bay. Aside from its nightlife, it also enjoys one of the most picturesque beaches in the Med, and Sunset Strip is, as the name suggests, the perfect spot from which to enjoy the setting sun at day‘s end. You‘ll find plenty of activity as evening descends in the bay area, catering for music lovers of all tastes. The liveliest clubs and bars are found in San Antonio‘s West End.

PLAYA D‘EN BOSSA A pretty beach with ample space awaits at Playa d‘en Bossa. Here you‘ll find Ibiza‘s longest beach, where you can cool off with some waterside fun and try your hand at some windsurfing, jet skiing, or kite surfing. This beach is not just a relaxed place to spend the daytime either, as plenty of stylish bars kick into life as the evening gets underway, many right there on the serene shoreline. It is the ideal place to enjoy a cold beer or cocktail as the sun sinks into the sea.

A QUIET TIME IN SANTA EULALIA Quiet times with the family and friends can be enjoyed in Ibiza‘s Santa Eulalia. A relaxed jaunt around the marina doing a little yacht spotting is a gentle way to unwind. Why not follow that with a bite to eat at one of the many waterside restaurants, washed down with a glass of sangria? The quality dining options dotted around the marina draw tourists and locals alike to this charming part of the island.

UNWIND IN TALAMANCA Another one for families is nearby Talamanca. With its stretch of golden sands and shallow

waters, this is the ideal place for those bringing children and it‘s pretty much guaranteed you‘ll find your own personal space given the size of the beach. One thing worth noting about Talamanca is that it‘s open all year, holiday season or otherwise, so could be a good option if traveling out of season. With its eclectic mix of restaurants and bars and crystalline waters, Talamanca proves to be a pleasant place in which to unwind and revitalize.

OLD TOWN Not to be overlooked is the island‘s Old Town, where you can sample some authentic Spanish culture. Whether you want to take a leisurely stroll around the cobbled streets, seek shade and solace in the shadow of old churches, or sit and have a coffee and watch the world go by, this lovely part of Ibiza will put you in touch with the historical vibe of the island. If you‘re feeling in need of some exercise, proceed up the ancient steps to take a look around the town‘s historic fortress and battlements with splendid views across the sparkling Med. You‘ll find some pleasant eating options along the way in shady courtyards and hidden alleyways. Needless to say, nighttime sees a transformation come over the town as it turns into party town to while away the evening hours.

CAN MARÇA CAVES Once a smuggler‘s first port of call, the Can Marça Caves now feature a stunning array of waterfalls and mesmerizing pools all beautifully illuminated. The slow march of time is embodied in this subterranean world as you gaze at the stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over the unimaginable eons. The caves are found in the north of Ibiza in the Port of Sant Miquel. There can be no doubt Ibiza can cater to all types of holidaymaker. Whether you‘re looking for a week or two under deep blue skies, sparkling sea views and glorious sunsets, or you‘re here for the nightlife, the island has it all. So if you‘re contemplating some Mediterranean sun sometime soon, don‘t discount the beautiful Balearic Island of Ibiza.

WHICH WINTER VACATION IS FOR YOU? If you live in the northern hemisphere, summer is drawing to a close, which means that you‘re probably already starting to think about where you could go this winter. From ski breaks to winter sun, here are some cold weather ideas that will keep you busy through the chillier months. A European City Break If you want to do some serious walking and sightseeing, winter is the best time to travel. The cold, crisp air that you‘ll find in most European cities might be interrupted by a few days of grey skies and rain and maybe even snow, but if you go for southern Europe like Spain and Italy it‘s never going to get too cold. And if you‘re going on vacation to be a tourist and look at the local landmarks, the weather won‘t matter much anyway. Pick up some local crafts and delicacies at the famous Christmas Markets in Vienna, go to London‘s Oxford Street to view the lights and illuminations and to finish your Christmas shopping, and go to Rome to immerse yourself in some timeless culture. Just don‘t forget your hat and gloves! Visiting The Northern Lights The winter time is the best time to go to see the Aurora Borealis, otherwise known as the Northern Lights. This is a natural light display that turns the sky shades of colours from green to red to pink, thanks to solar winds. The Aurora is mostly seen in high latitude regions like the Arctic and Antarctic. But never fear - if you want to see the Aurora, you don‘t have to travel all the way to the North Pole. The north of Scotland can provide some gorgeous views, while you could also go to Iceland and squeeze in a city break to Reykjavik as well. Other Scandinavian countries like Finland

and Norway also provide incredible sights of the Northern Lights. Take them in as part of a tour so you can also explore the rest of the natural wintery delights that these countries have to offer. Skiing In The States If you love winter sports, chances are you‘re itching for summer to be over so you can hit the slopes all over again. And if you haven‘t ever tried winter sports, what are you waiting for? This year could be it. It‘s a good idea to start off with skiing while you get your balance on the snow before advancing to snowboarding, where you can focus on how to keep your centre of gravity so you stay upright. The USA offers some of the most beautiful ski slopes in the world. Everyone‘s heard of Aspen and Vail in Colorado but Breckenridge is also great, and perfect if you‘re a beginner. If you want to practise your winter sports uninhibited by other skiers, why not try out Big Sky in Montana? A lot of the slopes are deserted there so you‘ll get to enjoy the crisp snow and blue skies solo. Try Out Some Winter Sun Finally, if the cold weather‘s starting to get to you and you‘re aching for some sun on your face, it could be time to think about visiting a winter sun destination. If you want to try somewhere new, why not go for Asia? Cambodia‘s Rabbit Beach is perfect for backpackers with its authenticity and incredible seafood, while there are a number of new villa resorts for travellers who enjoy the finer things in life. If you want to spend a couple of weeks sprawled on the beach in luxury, the Maldives in the Indian Ocean might just be for you with their fine white sands and clear blue waters. Try out experiences like swimming with sharks and hiking, or simply enjoy the sun. Alternatively, why not try out St Helena? A British island in the middle of the South Atlantic ocean, it boasts glorious beaches, a picture perfect coastline, and a lot of local history to be explored. The winter doesn‘t have to be glum. Start planning your vacation now so you‘ve got something to get yourself through the drearier months of the year!
