Out on the water, behind the safety zone, a sea of boats was rafted up as if they were waiting for the Fourth of July fireworks. Quite possibly there were more boats out there than on the actualStandingholiday.on my neighbor’s pier, a hush came over all of us, waiting for the inevitable to happen. My brother and I were debating the difference between felling and an implosion, when at 8 a.m. on the dot, the deafen ing sound of explosions ripped across the water. Multiple charges exploded and it’s impossible to describe just how loud it was unless you were there. How you could feel it reverberating in your chest. How it was so deafening and frankly terrifying that you wanted to shut your eyes and run but couldn’t look away. ould you shed a tear over the destruction of a rusty old coal-fired power plant? No one was more surprised than us. But it was a solemn day. Because, yes, while it was a pollut er and generally just an eyesore, it was ours. It was in the backdrop of many photos over the years. Boaters near and far who frequented the Upper Bay con sidered the red and white smokestacks a beacon, an unofficial navigational aid, and for many, the way home.

W

of dust slowly blew out over the water towards the flotilla of boats.

# Taffy Williams in the aftermath of the demolition.

Saying Goodbye to an Unofficial Beacon

We all knew the day was coming, but still it did not feel like a reality until it was all over. I woke up that Friday morning, late, with frantic texts to “hurry up” and “don’t miss it!” I live near my family in the neighbor hood where I grew up and we had all

The plant first went into operation in 1961. It was decommissioned in 2018 and demolished via an implosion on August 19, 2022.

planned to meet up that morning for the big event. As I ran down the street to get a better view, I passed neigh bors who all had the same idea, some carrying lawn chairs. It feels odd to say now, but it was a momentous day.

By Kaylie Jasinski

It took some time before the smoke cleared and you could see the shoreline, now devoid of the plant that had stood there for over 60 years. Only some of the rubble was still visible above the trees. For the people who lived directly across from the plant, it was a surpris ingly somber sight. For many, those smokestacks were in the backdrop of so many family photos—standing on their pier, going out on their boat, swim ming in the Bay… And in an instant, they were gone. In the aftermath of the explosion, people lingered on their piers as if unsure what to do next. Several shed a few tears. Some toasted the “old girl.”The future is uncertain. Several proposals ranging from development to preservation have been discussed. But no matter what happens to that peninsula, it won’t be the same. The plant was an eyesore, but it was also a beacon. Annapolis might have the towers at Greenbury Point or Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse, but Upper Bay boaters had the C.P. Crane Generating Station at the mouth of Seneca Creek. And more than a few boaters, myself included, will miss those red and white stacks while out on the Bay. Because like it or not, they always pointed towards home.

the Bay this fall just waiting for you to dive into the best crabs and oysters of the season (learn more on page 34 of this issue). It’s also a great time to check in with your local club or owner’s association to see if they have any endof-season raftups or events planned and claim that last minute spot. Or, plan one of your own—reach out to those friends or marina neighbors that you’ve been swearing you’re going to raft up with all summer long, and make it happen! Or, organize an end-of-season dock party— you might end up meeting next season’s raftupYoubuddy.don’thave to be an extrovert to have a last hurrah. Fall is the perfect time to explore new places (or return to old favorites) and avoid the crowds. Think about where you may have wanted to take your boat this summer but didn’t, perhaps because the marinas were already booked up or you knew the summer bugs in that remote anchorage would be too much for your crew, and try to get out to them now. Many of the Bay’s bustling towns take on a much more quaint

ummer has come and gone, and so has the peak of the 2022 boating season. As the air starts to cool and the days get shorter, you’re probably thinking about winter storage and eyeing all the little projects that you added to your mental list over the summer. But there’s no need to rush into maintenance season just yet—there are still plenty of warm days on the Bay through October and even beyond, so read on to get the most out of these last few weeks of pleas ant

Making the Most of theEnd of the Season

Theweather.endof the season is a great time to meet up with boating friends and attend outdoor events now that the heat and humidity have begun to subside. If the U.S. Powerboat Show from October 6 through 9 doesn’t satiate your appe tite, consider branching out to the U.S. Sailboat Show from October 13 through 17. The vendors will be more than happy to show you another side of life on the water, and many of them probably have products that are just as applicable to your needs as a powerboater. There are also a number of seafood festivals around

demeanor once the last of the holiday weekends have passed. Or go back to your favorite anchorage and get a chance to appreciate it in a different season— you might be surprised what wildlife you notice passing through in the autumn months and when the rest of the boaters have subsided. In the fall, you’ll also get to worry less about sudden summer thunderstorms, be able to enjoy a walk through town or lounging on deck with out the sweat, and have a front row view of the fall foliage from the water.

No matter how you choose to cap off your boating season, do something that makes you feel motivated and excited about getting to the other side of winter. The colder months can be a dreary time for boaters as we muscle through main tenance, attempt to maintain connec tions with boating friends, and long for warm days back on the water. Make sure you leave this season feeling like you got the most out of it, so that when it does come time to move into winter storage, you remember exactly why all the work and all the waiting is worth it.

n our post-pandemic, hybrid workfrom-home lifestyles, going for a walk or a run in the countryside, a hike, or a stroll in your local park are simple ways to get outdoors. Professor Charles Spence, from Oxford University’s Crossmodal Research Laboratory, believes there is an even greater prize out there by swapping “green space” with “blue space.”

ply being close to it links to increasingly popular notions of ‘embodied cognition:’ the basic idea that we think with, and through, our bodies and not just with our brains.“Being on the water promotes bodily awareness, given that we presumably need to pay attention to maintain our balance. It encourages a kind of mindful presence in the activity involved. There is also a very real pleasure associated with our attention being drawn to the bodily senses, such as touch and proprioception [your body’s ability to sense movement, action, and location]. Navigating on the water requires more attention to one’s surroundings than simply walking, an activity we can do on autopilot.”AkzoNobel’s yacht coatings division, which commissioned the study, seeks to empower and support boat owners to tap into that feeling of joy, adrenaline, or calm by getting out on the water to enjoy their boat. he Marine Trades Association of Maryland (MTAM) would like to congratulate Joseph Cason on the completion of his sixweek On-the-Job Training (OJT) with Composite Yacht, LLC in Trappe, MD. Cason was working in construc tion and completing a program at the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) when he expressed to a CSM career resource counselor his desire to work in the marine industry.

Cason recommends MTAM’s OJT program on the basis that it connects people with opportunities in the boating industry they may not otherwise realize are available. “If I work on boats,” he says, “I get to be on the water.” If working on the water is your goal, MTAM’s OJT program is a great way to get there.

The tornado was estimated to be ap proximately 100 yards wide with wind gusts as high as 110 mph.

The Ewell Volunteer Fire Department sprang into action and led initial efforts, working with local churches, businesses, and individuals who volunteered to help with de bris cleanup and damage assessment. Nowadays we not only race to the office and then race home to make dinner, many of us also race across the water’s surface to get wherever we’re going in a hurry. the Green New Deal by comparison. For those of us who want a true trawler, the real deal, thank goodness there are companies like Kadey-Krogen, building boats like their 58.

Kadey-Krogen 58: In it for the Long Haul

Not only is the Kadey-Krogen 58 a trawler in the sense of hull design and performance, it’s also built for comfort on extended voyages.

Outfitted with a single 325-hp or twin 160-hp John Deere diesel in boards, the 58 can cruise along at seven knots while getting in the range of 2.3 to 2.6 mile to the gallon. Pull it back to half that speed and you can more than double the efficiency. Either way your range will be measured by thousands of miles, not by hundreds—you could literally cruise this boat from Baltimore to Belfast. Top end is around 10 knots, and at that speed, range remains in ex cess of 1000 miles even while account ing for a 10-percent reserve.

Water Capacity: 400 gal.

And when it’s time to get from the anchorage to port, you’ll be thankful for the Steelhead Marine ES1250 hydraulic davit.

comfortable. And the saloon on the 58 lands you squarely in the lap of luxury. Valences, cabinetry, and much of the furniture is cherry wood, upholstery is Ultraleather or Ultrasuede, and gal ley countertops are granite. You get to choose between having an ice maker or a wine chiller in the bookcase, and the list of appliances aboard the 58 even includes a dishwasher and washer/dryer.

Many builders try to cram four or five staterooms into a boat of this size, but as a result they’re cramped enough to trigger a claustrophobic attack. The 58, however, incorporates two- and threestateroom arrangements so each of the staterooms has plenty of room to stretch out. You can also choose between having two or three heads or carving out some of the extra room for an office nook.

Does keeping in true trawler tradi tion mean tech gets left in your wake? Heck no. The pilothouse in this boat is downright dazzling, with triple MFD displays, an overhead electronics cabinet, multi-color overhead lighting, and a pair of Stidd Admiral pedestal seats. Plus, the 58 comes with the Vessel Vanguard digital yacht management system. For you old-school navigators, there’s also a dedicated chart table with chart lights. Our favorite thing about the pilot house, however, is its size. Here again, Kadey-Krogen chose to create fewer, larger areas, rather than shoehorning in lots of small ones. And in this case that means there’s a settee and cherry dinette behind the helm station, so friends and family can hang out and socialize while underway.Ifyouwant to get where you’re going in a hurry, this isn’t going to be your next boat. But if you believe getting there is half the fun, you’ll have a tough time finding a more competent and more comfortable place to be than on the Kadey-Krogen 58. #

othing signals fall has arrived quite like the hundreds of boats and floating docks that take over downtown Annapolis each October. The air feels a little crisper (sometimes, it is Maryland after all), the leaves have be gun to change, and there’s no containing the buzz of excitement in the air.

Here at PropTalk (and FishTalk and SpinSheet), we know our way around the shows. And after years of attending as both exhibitors and guests, we’ve learned a thing or two. We’ve put together this guide to help you make the most of your show experience. In it you will find perti nent details on things such as where to park and the cost of tickets, but we also highlight new and premiering boats, insider tips (like where the real bathrooms are), special events and sales, how to get around Annapolis, and much more.

Whether you’re in the market for a new boat, boating supplies, or simply want to dream about the possibility of owning a boat in the future, this is the show for you. If you want to stroll the docks in a historic city on a beautiful fall day, come on down. How about having an excuse to sip on a Painkiller before 5 p.m.? Welcome. Want to chat with the

experts, maybe sit in on a seminar, take an on-water class, or demo a boat before buying? Huzzah! You can do all of this and more.

As exhibitors, our work has already begun. For the Annapolis Boat Shows and dealers, their job is even harder. It’s no easy feat assembling the floating docks, constructing the tents, and ensur ing boats will be here and on time, given today’s supply chain difficulties. Which makes the show all the more special. It takes a village to put this spectacle together, and we have a feeling this year is going to be better than ever.

Ages 7 to 12 - $10

The VIP Experience: Presented by LaVictoire Finance. Escape from the crowds with a cocktail in hand and a bite to eat. Located on a beautiful floating dock, the VIP Experience is for the discriminating boat buyer looking for VIP treatment. Enjoy exclusive access to an elegant lounge with comfortable seat ing, a continental breakfast, lunch, and hors d’oeuvres, and wine and cocktail tastings throughout the day. Cost: $175. With reserved parking pass at Eastport Elementary: $200. VIP tickets include admission into the boat show. A limited number are available daily. Must be 21 to enter.

also tend to have superior ma neuverability and stability over hard-sided boats thanks to their inflatable collars. It’s sort of like giving a tightrope walker a pole to balance with and a wider rope to balance on. The air tanks raise the boat’s center of buoyancy relative to its center of mass while spreading out the base of support. The collar also improves comfortability in rough seas and—in conjunction with the higher weight capacity—allows the boat to be fitted with a larger outboard.

All those advantages explain why RIBs are so well suited for water rescue and law enforcement applications, but they also raise an important question: why don’t more recreational boaters buy RIBs? To find out, I met up with Charles Herbert from AYS Inflatables.

By Ryan Gullang

I

Charles is in charge of business devel opment at Annapolis Yacht Sales and has spent a large portion of his career working in RIB distribution. Given that he also uses a RIB for recreational purposes, he’s inti mately familiar with the disparity between the benefits RIBs have to offer and their popularity.

around the performance advantages. A RIB is essentially a hybrid between a hardsided boat and an inflatable; and, in many ways, they inherit the best features of both parents. For one thing, the inflatable collar provides more buoyancy per pound than straight fiberglass, which makes them lighter. For reference, a 21-foot Brig Eagle 6.7 RIB has a dry weight of 1720 pounds.

n terms of basic design, few of the vessels seen out on the Bay are as distinctive as rigid inflatable boats. The RIB formula emerged during the 60s in the form of rescue boats. You take a solid v-hull (usually fiberglass or aluminum) and wrap a collar of inflatable air tubes around it. The end product is a boat that’s safe, stable, fast, and efficient—making RIBs ideal for water rescue, law enforcement, and military applications. Seeing their success among marine professionals, in the 1970s, manufacturers mounted an effort to bring RIBs to the recreational market. Fifty-odd years later, that effort is still more or less ongoing. Unless they’re looking for a RIB specifically, people in the market for new boats often rule them out without much of a second thought. However, before filtering them out of your search results, it’s worth considering what RIBs have to offer.

So, why buy a RIB? Well, the answers you’ll find online are all mostly centered

Why You Should Consider Buying A RIB Over a Traditional Center Console

That’s 930 pounds less than a similarly sized and equipped Boston Whaler 210 Montauk. Because RIBs are lighter than hard-sided boats, they generally have a higher weight capacity, are easier to trailer, have a higher top speed, and are more fuel efficient.RIBs

Charles also points out that the space limitations can be a turn-off for pleasure boaters too. “More and more, people are looking for certain accouterments like a head or a berth. RIB manufacturers are starting to offer those sorts of creature comforts, but RIBs only have so much space. Compared to a hard-sided boat, with a RIB, you’ll need a bigger boat for the same amenities.”

80 October 2022 PropTalk.com

So, to go back to my original question, why buy a RIB? In short, they’re kind of like a more practical version of a jet ski. They offer a uniquely enjoyable boating experience and the versatility to serve as an able platform for the other water activities you enjoy. If you’re looking for a fishing boat or a wake boat, then a RIB might not be right for you. But if you want a fun boat that you can fish or ski from, they’re worth considering. Either way, it’s worth getting your butt in a boat and seeing if a RIB is right for you. #

feature for parents of young sailors. They can watch the regatta and then have their kids sail over to the boat and hop aboard. Plus, they’ll save a fortune on gel coat when it comes time to teach their youngins how to dock.Thatsaid, a list of pros and cons will do little to sway people’s opinions—choosing a boat often comes down to gut instinct. As such, perhaps the most compelling reason to consider buying a RIB is that they’re a lot of fun. Their speed, agility, and ability to take waves make them an absolute blast to drive. Whizzing around in an 18-foot Zodiac with a 40-hp outboard on the back and a suicide knob on the steering wheel is just about the most fun you can have on a powerboat outside of international

The bottom line is that the lack of space is the major drawback of buying a RIB. But, as Charles puts it, “RIBs are really for a particular kind of person. Once you get butts in boats, people see that they’re a lot of fun.”RIBs have become relatively popular among recreational boaters for specific ap plications. One of the reasons they were so widely accepted by law enforcement is that they’re well suited for boarding other boats. The inflatable collar doubles as a giant, wraparound bumper, so you don’t have to worry as much about bumping into a boat or pinching any appendages. That makes them great yacht tenders. It’s also a nice

“RIBs aren’t ideal for all use cases,” explains Charles. “There are RIBs with rod holders and ski towers, but the big limitation is storage. You don’t have the deck space for a giant fish box or a locker to keep your water skis and wakeboards in. So, people buying a boat specifically for offshore fishing are going to buy a hardsided center console and wakeboarders are going to look for wake boats.”

A Long Island CircumnavigationSound

ne way to get through a cold Chesapeake winter is to plan a summer cruise. The very effort will warm you up! And so it was, in the dark days of February 2022, three Bay area couples began to plan in earnest for a summer cruise to a distant shore: in this case a circumnavigation of Long Island Sound.

As the itinerary evolved, the result was three weeks on the boats, beginning with the Independence Day holiday weekend.

# And so it was that three Chesapeake Bay couples planned a cruise to a distant shore.

On a 20-knot boat, weather permit ting, you can make Cape May your first stop (112 nautical miles from Annapo lis). Mother Nature favored us, and the

first leg was easy. The three boats got an early morning start and were in Cape May by midafternoon. Spirits were high at our group dinner ashore that evening. After a winter of planning and a spring getting the boats ready, it was a common and palpable relief to be underway.

O

The next stop presents a choice to folks making the trip to the Sound. You can push ahead for an even longer day, to a

location inside New York Harbor, maybe 125 miles. Or you can hold up short, stopping along the New Jersey shore. For us it was the latter. We stopped at Manasquan Inlet at a marina in the town of Brielle. Manasquan Inlet is 88 miles from Cape May and provides an easy shot, less than 40 miles to New York Harbor.

Getting through New York Har bor and into Long Island Sound is a 240-nautical-mile-run from the An napolis area. Our plan was to push hard to get to Long Island Sound and then slow down and enjoy the many interest ing ports in the Sound, before a recipro cal hard push back to Annapolis, as our allotted three weeks drew to a close.

By Mike Pitchford

PropTalk.com October 2022 83

One thing you will learn on a trip like this is that the preferred, by far, summer job for local high school and college students is at the marinas. The Oyster Bay marina/launch

After cruising through New York Harbor and up the East River, we en tered Long Island Sound in early after noon. After the hustle and bustle inside of the big city, entering the Sound is a revelation. The traffic diminishes, the skyline turns from tall buildings to trees, the water turns ocean blue/green, and fresh air abounds.

After a not too early start the next morning, we were loitering in front of the Statue of Liberty before lunchtime. The brief slowdown was to allow for the almost mandatory photo of your boat with Lady Liberty in the back ground. How can you resist?

From Greenport it was time to turn back west and to sample the Connecticut shore. We spent a couple of days in Mystic, taking in both their stellar aquarium and the Mystic Seaport Marina. We also stopped in Essex and Milford. Essex wins the “best manicured” award for a town with nothing out of place, at least on our morning walks. Milford tops the best ice cream category with a shop adjacent to the municipal marina called Scoopy Doo’s.

We had a hard time agreeing on the right boat for both of us; my husband likes to fish, and I like to lounge. We also favor a galley topside. This boat met all our criteria and more. We were finally able to bring her home by sea in May 2022.

We love the bright, openness of the boat—two large skylights that open and built-in shades and screens, wrap around windows in the pilothouse, and sliding glass doors that exit to the stern making a 360-degree view of the water. Another sliding door at the helm makes for easy docking. This boat offers many cushions and seating/lounging combinations—a bench on the bow to sip cocktails or drink your morning coffee, another pad for lying flat on the bow for sun lovers, an adjust able stern bench so when the two twin 200 Yamaha engines are down, the bench adjusts giving you two extra feet of room to either lay out on a fully padded aft bed or erect the café table with a “U” shaped bench for entertaining.

The NYC passage was our favorite adventure—passing Rikers Island where we were surrounded by a gang of more than 50 jet skiers wearing pirate costumes playing in our wake, seeing inmates playing basketball on top of one of their facilities built on a barge (the world’s largest prison barge nicknamed “the boat”), traversing Hell Gate with all its rumored dangers, (we made it through unscathed), through the East River around Manhattan under some of NYC’s famous bridges emptying out to Ellis Island and the Statue of Lib erty—priceless! I work in the city and have been fortunate to sail some of the East and Hudson rivers on one of my vendors cruises, but seeing it from my own boat coming down from the north passage was really special for me.

Never having taken such a large journey on the open seas, we thought it best to upgrade some of our safety equipment. We spent a total of six overnights along the way; transient slips were a challenge to find as well as open gas docks that time of year. Altogether, we traveled 530 miles and passed over 40 lighthouses!

Our only real mishap during our journey was running aground in the New Jersey intercoastal waterway. Thankfully, BoatUS and our insurance covered our tow out of the clam beds. Locals like to fish for fluke directly in the channels which aren’t very wide in the Intercoastal. Even

It was mostly sand, but not knowing what we were dealing with created stressful moments as we waited for our tow boat. Even our tow boat got stuck! Our tow boat captain was a great partner and once he got us free from the clam beds, towed us a pretty long way past the channel fishermen into deeper water. Lesson learned—don’t venture out of the channel to avoid channel fishermen; ask them to move!

Over the course of our seven-day journey, we really got to know the boat well and absolutely love it! The only minor complaint is a lack of storage, but that’s the main complaint on all boats. The aft cabin is mainly used for provisions and cushions—we need some creativity to maxi mize and organize for long trips. I believe that we have some of the most spectacular cruising grounds in the world (I’m biased, of course), but here there’s something that evokes a sense of awe and wonder. In just the Salish Sea alone (ahoybc.com/bc-coast/salish-sea) stretch ing between Olympia, WA, and Campbell River, BC, you have over 4600 miles of coastline to explore as you take in views of towering snowcapped mountain ranges along with hundreds of islands and protec tive inlets. Charter Series: Part 2

We specialize in trawler-style yachts and at one time, we were recognized as the world’s only authorized Grand Banks charter company. Our company can be traced back to 1978. In 2004, Brian Pemberton purchased the company, creating NW Explorations, which is still going strong today. Brian was a huge fan of Grand Banks, and his love for these iconic yachts led to NW Explorations being so well known for its large charter fleet. Currently our fleet includes makes such as Ocean Alexander, KadeyKrogen, and DeFever in addition to our many Grand Banks. Size is mostly in the 40- to 50-foot range, with 70 feet being the largest yacht in our fleet.

We are based out of Bellingham, WA, and offer bareboat charters and flotilla adventures. On bareboat charters guests can cruise most anywhere they desire, being limited by their fuel budget. To get specific, May 1 to September 15, navigation is extended to include the West side of Vancouver Island not more than 25 miles offshore, the inside waters of British Columbia north of 51 degrees north latitude, including Queen Charlotte Sound, Hecate Strait (west side of Queen Charlotte Islands is excluded) and Dixon Entrance, all not more than 25 miles

offshore, the inside waters of southeast Alaska, the Gulf of Alaska, and Prince William Sound and its navigable tributaries, all of which could keep one busy for a few decades of exploring!

It’s a great area for people who want to cruise in sheltered protective waters. The vast majority of popular routes avoids open ocean, and you always seem to be a stone’s throw from a cute town with welcoming marinas and a vibrant smalltown charm… I truly believe it’s a boater’s paradise up here.

the ideal size boat for up here is in the 42- to 46-foot range. It’s just big enough to offer a great layout for two couples or a family—parents and kids or grand kids (four adults and two young kids), while being easy to dock—it doesn’t feel large and unwieldy pulling into a packed marina. It’s a great size boat for multi-day trips, sleeping arrangements, cooking, entertaining, and just all around exploring.

It’s hard to put into words. The closest I could get is describing it as an experience in and of itself. In addition to all the things that make for a fantastic PNW cruiser, Grand Banks have a distinct warmth and personality; often imitated but never like the real thing. In my opinion, if someone wanted to come up here and assume the persona of ‘Pacific Northwest cruiser,’ a Grand Banks yacht is one of the top choices. What do boaters get out of a flotilla versus a bareboat charter?

Bareboat charters are for people who are experienced enough in the waters up here to go off on their own. Many people who go on flotillas are avid boaters, but the Pacific Northwest has a lot of dynamics they might not be used to. We have very different tide swings compared to the East Coast and very challenging rapids in certain passes, so a lot of things are in timidating even for experienced boaters. Flotillas offer the best of both worlds.

The lead boat in the flotilla is staffed by our crew, who handle most of the trip planning. It takes a lot of the pressure off the charterer, allowing them to spend more time enjoying the journey while still at the helm of their own boat. We hear from many of our first-time flotilla guests that this was “a life changing experience.” It provides a huge sense of accomplishment and perhaps something they wouldn’t have had the confidence to do on their own.

water… The resume, in combination with a phone conversation, gives our charter department a good sense of a person’s skill level and helps us decide if additional training is needed before chartering one of our Avessels.super avid boater familiar with our local waters will pretty much be good to go, without needing anything more than initial orientation with their charter boat. Others might just need a brush up on a few skills, and we’ll offer short, boat maneuvering lessons, which by the way, are a requirement for first-time charters for some of our vessels. It’s always fun to see those guests who fly out here from afar and get on an identical make and model to what they already own back home. It’s as close as you’d get to shipping your yacht across the globe and cruising in it here. For those guests who have little to no boating experience, they can enroll in one of our one-, three-, or five-day powerboat training courses. We’ve recently had two young couples new to boating who did the three-day course together. This allows you to get out on the water with one of our instructors, learning everything practical (how to anchor, grab a mooring buoy, pull into a marina and refuel, deploy the tender) and it’s like a mini vacation. They get it all in one go. And then once they do that, they’ll often come back later in the season or next year and charter a boat all on their own, oftentimes the very boat they did their training on since they’re so familiar with it now.

For our Alaska flotilla, each leg (bookable portion) lasts approxi mately two weeks. Some guests come back different years and check off a leg they haven’t done yet, while others may book back-to-back legs, extending their trip with us to nearly a month. We have a few guests who have joined us for several years and counting.TheDesolation Sound and Prin cess Louisa flotillas are usually shorter at 10-20 days and are not broken up into legs like the Alaska Flotilla. Guests are on it from start to finish. With all flotillas, we do handle all the trip planning, refuels, moorings, and anchorages—the only thing they have to take care of themselves is pro visioning their boat and arriving on time. To get a good sense of what one would see and experience on a flotilla, I highly encourage everyone visit our Adventure Blog (nwexplorations. com/adventures) on our website. Each year, we do our best to post a daily blog from each flotilla so friends and family can see what their loved ones are up to. It also helps you plan which trip you’d be most interested in experiencing.Ifsomeone wants to charter a boat but they want someone else to skipper it, we maintain a list of skippers we can recommend. I don’t consider myself a racer. I enjoy cruising to waterfront restaurants with a group of friends. I’ve run 40 miles down the Bay in my boat as well as my dad’s boat. We get a group of boats together and run down the Bay for lunch. I love overnights, too. I’ll take my boat out on the Bohemia River and raft up with friends. They all have cruisers. I’m lucky enough that usually someone has room for me to sleep on their boat. It’s peace ful waking up on the water. You tend to forget about life’s worries.

What made you decide to purchase a Baja?

My first boat I owned was a 17-foot center console Trophy. It was a great first boat. I had it for two seasons. The summer of 2020, I was running my dad’s boat 50 percent of the time and I quickly realized that my Trophy just didn’t seem fun anymore. It was simply too slow. So, the hunt for a hot rod Whenbegan.Ibought my 21-foot Baja, I didn’t plan to restore it. I only planned to redo the interior. It quickly snowballed when I took it to my friend Mike Cassidy who owns Cas sidy Painting. I took the boat to Mike for fiberglass work and one thing led to another. Before I knew it, he was paint ing the entire boat. Once that happened, I thought, now’s the time to change what I want. With the help of my dad, we com pletely gutted the boat. The only thing we didn’t remove was the motor. My dad and I made all the wood for a new interior. We made a custom dash with new gauges, added hydraulic steering, and trim tabs. The boat got new carpet, all new cleats

B efore the Tiki Lee’s Shootout, had you ever participated in such an event?

My father introduced me to boating at the young age of two. Growing up, every weekend we were out on the Chesapeake Bay in his 22 Wellcraft Elite. We did everything from tube and kneeboard to attend an Orioles baseball game in Baltimore. He also always had some type of Jon boat. We typically took that out during the week on the Christina River. After the Wellcraft, he had anything from a jet boat to a bowrider. After I graduated from high school, he bought the boat he always wanted: a 26-foot Sonic Prowler. That’s when I fell in love with an entirely different kind of boat ing.I’ve obviously learned to boat through my dad, but I’ve been running his Sonic for 15 years. That’s where the desire to have my own boat came from. Boating throughout the years came with carnage; blown motors and outdrives. I was there every time the motor was pulled—hand ing tools, watching, asking questions. I was grateful he never once kicked me out of the garage. As the years went by, the passion grew stronger.

and vents. I also added offshore controls with custom throttle made to have trim and tab switches. Spring of 2021, Flirtin’ With Disaster was born (the name comes from a Molly Hatchet song).

ourtney Mangini has been boat ing since she was two years old. On July 16, she was one of only three women who competed in the Tiki Lee’s Second Annual Shootout on the River. We recently caught up with Courtney to discuss her passion for boat ing and her experience at the event.

Courtney Mangini: Blasting Down The Bay Racing News

I had not. I only ever pleasure boated. Several years ago, I started following the OPA racing and went to several races. They were always a blast—walking the pits, checking out the race boats, and watching them race.

# Courtney with her dad Mike Mangini.

It was pretty cool being one of three wom en. Ashley Pennypacker ran her father’s 21 Scarab and Christie Ungarten ran her husband’s 22 Apache. Running solo didn’t bother me. I take my boat out by myself and meet up with friends all the time. For me, it wasn’t really anything different than what I do on a normal weekend, except this time, I had a helmet on.

I will say the three of us all knew each other and even though we were techni cally in competition, we showed up with one goal in mind: to support each other. We even had “team” shirts made. We were Team Badass Chicks. The goal is to pro mote women in a male-dominated world and hope to inspire other women with the same interests.

I didn’t have any. The only thing I was kind of unsure about was the start but once I got out there and saw how it worked, I was fine. I take my boat out every weekend. I’m very comfortable with my boat. I knew the Coast Guard had cleared the course. I said to my dad, “I’m not doing anything that I don’t do on any given weekend. It’s actually safer because I’m wearing a helmet and a lifejacket, and I know there are no other boats on the course.” Normally on the

What was it like being one of only three women to participate?

I knew my boat wasn’t really in it for the competition. It was for fun, and a self-goal forTheyme. had a poker run on Friday, which I participated in in a friend’s boat. That was very fun and very well organized. They also had an air show.

They recorded me at 62.8 mph—which is just taking your speed at that last radar point. The course is three-fourths of a mile.

Bay you need to keep you head on a swivel in case another boator or jet ski comes by. Before the Shootout, organizers went through and checked everyone’s boat. At the driver’s meeting they explained every thing really well. The place was packed, and they had tons of staff. The rain put a little damper on things. I got my runs in early, but I know some of the other racers didn’t get all their solo runs in because of the weather. Each person automatically gets two runs, and you can pay an ad ditional $50 for two more runs.

What advice would you give other women?

Best advice I can give is practice. Get seat time. Get comfortable with whatever boat you’re going to be racing or driving. With any boat, you really must become one with the boat. Anybody can get in a

boat and just push the throttles forward, but it’s so much more than that—learning how the boat feels and how far you can push the boat. And the only way you’re going to do that is just getting in and driving it. It doesn’t have to be driving at full throttle all the time. Once you get a feel for it, and learning how to trim it out, the more comfortable you get, and you can start going faster.

That to me is the Superbowl of Shoot outs. It’s a much bigger event—they have the fastest of the fastest. My boat right now is just stock. I could take my boat out there just to say I did it, but it wouldn’t really be in the competition. Potentially

What is your favorite aspect of boating?

I plan to do the shootout again next year just because I had so much fun doing it this year. I have a goal of doing the Lake of the Ozarks shootout someday. However, that will require a bigger/faster boat. So that plan is on hold for now.

I’m not sure I can name just one thing. I love blasting down the Bay, listening to nothing but the sound of the motor, and forgetting about life’s Oneworries.ofmy favorite things is sunset cruises. I love watching the sunset from the water. It’s good for the soul. I love how boating brings people together. Rafting up on the water with friends is a great way to meet new people. I would like to have a faster boat in general. To me you can only go so fast in a 21-foot boat before it gets to be dangerous. I don’t really have my eye on a dream boat now. I have a sentimental value in my boat because I restored it with my dad. Someday I’d like to have a 30-foot boat.

Since he was a Cadillac dealer, Cal’s first inboards were built on a big, Cadillac V-8 block. Demand for those V-8 Cadillac Crusaders spread like wildfire among owners of homebuilt hydroplanes, classic wooden runabouts, and even some sailboats. Since Cal’s engines immediately earned a reputa tion for reliability and performance, the demand for his Crusader engines soon spread nationwide to production boatbuilders.

Diva was the boat displayed for four years in a special Riva showroom inside New York City’s Rockefeller Center in the late 1960s. Although her model year is 1966, she was first sold as a 1969 model in 1970.She was “dressed up” for the showroom with several features. The most notable is her engine, capable of attaining 45 mph, using the chromed engine exhaust manifolds that come on a Riva Aquarama model. She also had all the accesso ries that were available in the 1960s, like the swim ladder, flags, ski tow, paddles, etc.

Fast forward to May 2001. Diva underwent a major restoration after she was purchased by her current owner, Peter Takvorian.

In fact, I discovered Diva at the Bristol Classic and Antique Boat Show, where Peter had just won another award for this boat from the

Now for a bit more about Riva, which describes itself as the “bestknown nautical brand in the World” due in part to its more than 175 years of history as well as its sophisticated designs, superb craftsmanship, and high visibility among celebrities (in addition to appearances in countless movies).

Making YOUR BOaT New Again!

The family’s commitment to the brand continued into the 1950s, when Carlo Riva capitalized on the allure the Riva had among celebri ties, royalty, and business owners. Carlo’s talents and natural drive for perfection were legendary. During that period, he collaborated with designer Giorgio Barilani. That led to the introduction in 1962 of Aquarama, a wooden runabout that became an instant classic.

Carlo Riva also co-developed the technologies necessary to build his boats, including wood lami nates, varnishes, chrome plating, and construction methods. In addition, he was involved with “the masterly development of the Riva Chevy engines.” #

here has the summer gone? A lot of us have asked ourselves that question lately, as our first fairly “normal” summer has flown by. The fall boat shows are right around the corner, the days are getting shorter, and shrink wrap is proliferating in local marinas. Most shops report a busy summer and are looking forward to a busy fall. Labor shortages and supply issues are still a problem but do seem to be gradually easing, or perhaps we are just getting accustomed to working around them. As we approach the climax of the season the mood seems to be generally upbeat, and most shops are gearing up for fall haul outs and storage.

“The number-one issue with this location, is there is no good explanation as to why a company this massive would target this miniscule creek, where there’s no way it won’t impact water quality,” said Judith Stribling, professor emeritus of Salisbury University and representa tive of Friends of the Nanticoke and Wicomico Environmental Trust. “This is the only place in Maryland that Atlantic sturgeon are reproducing, and we don’t believe any level of risk is acceptable.”

You still have this month to enter (it’s free), submit your pics, and walk away with cool fishing goodies awarded by the Coastal Conservation Association of Maryland. The fecal waster produced by this scale of operation would produce levels “well exceeding those of the entire human popu lation of Caroline County, self-contained under a single roof,” according to a joint statement published in the Talbot Spy, written by a group of concerned scientists and community representatives. The state ment also noted that AquaCon’s latest two endeavors include mass die-offs of 600,000 fish in 2020 at a Miami, FL, facility, and an incident at their pilot plant in Denmark in 2021 that turned a nearby waterway red with excessive amounts of iron chloride.

FishTalk Magazine special correspon dent Mollie Rudow reports that at a public hearing in Federalsburg in August, “The meeting demonstrated that the will of the local and scientific communities falls against permitting AquaCon to build on the Marshyhope. The operation was de scribed as an existential threat to the Atlan tic sturgeon, and out of all the comments only one was pro-AquaCon. Community members raised concerns about fish die-off, reduced property values, and the degrada tion of the Marshyhope.”

We note that the Marshyhope allows one to enjoy the rare treat of fishing in some of the state’s most pristine waters, and it seems horrific that the state would even consider allowing a monster McSalmon factory— about the same size as six Walmart superstores—to discharge millions of gallons a day into a creek so small you can cast across it.

We love the unusual angle this Chesapeake Bay Foundation-sponsored tourna ment takes, with winners judged not by how large a fish they can catch, but by how many different species you can score while fishing in the waters around restored oyster reefs. Last year the fishing territory extended from a cluster of reefs near the Eastern Shore of Maryland to include over 100 dif ferent reef sites in the Bay, so wher ever you fish, you can compete. Outer Banks Fishing in the Fall

Going after tuna, dolphin, wahoo, and billfish is not the two- to threehour run we have here in DelMarVa. The Gulf Stream is much closer to the Outer Banks and the captains here fish for these species every day for most of the year.

F

Once the sun is up, I will move to a spot along the rail and set up for bottom fishing. I use a top-bottom rig baited with FishBites bloodworms, clam, or sand flea. I usually expect to catch sea mullet, spot, blues, and puppy drum. I may rig up another rod with a bucktail and Gulp! and work around the pilings for flounder.

If you have a kayak, you can fish the sounds. They are shallow and hold good fishing for speckled trout and red drum. Or you may charter a boat to fish the inside waters for the same fish.

At the Outer Banks in the fall, it’s all good.

At the end of the pier there will be a group of dedicated anglers fishing for king mackerel. They use two rods. One is the trolly rod. It is cast out as far as possible with just a sinker. The second rod has a live bluefish and is sent down the line from the trolly rod on a release clip. The bluefish will swim close to the surface and attract a king. When the big fish hits the blue, he will snap the release clip and the fight is

all is the best time to spend time at the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Barring hur ricanes, the weather is beautiful, and the fishing is outstanding. On top of that, house rentals are reasonable, all the restaurants remain open, and most of the charter and head boats are still running.Nomatter what type of fishing you enjoy, you can find it at the Outer Banks in the fall. My favorite is surf fishing, but since this is a boating magazine, I will try to stick with fish ing from things that float.

I like to get to the pier at first light and cast Gotcha plugs for Spanish mackerel and bluefish. This is a learned technique where you cast as far as you can, lean over the rail, place the rod towards the water, and while whipping the rod, you crank the plug back as fast as possible. The drag is set so it gives just a bit with every whip of the rod.

I do not recommend taking your own boat to the Outer Banks unless you have a good knowledge of the lo cal waters. They do not call this place the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” for nothing. Diamond Shoals awaits those who venture outside the very danger ous Oregon and Hatteras Inlets.

I believe I have fished on every pier from Nags Head to Frisco. I really

don’t have a favorite as I have caught fish from them all and had fishless days from them as well.

Onceon.you pay for a day on the pier, you can come and go as you please. If you are with your family, you can get up early, fish for Spanish and blues, join the family for breakfast, and either bring the kids back to the pier or join the family for whatever they plan for the day. Then go back to the pier for the after-dinner bite.

There are a couple of head boats that run from here, and they target a few species we don’t have in our local waters. Grouper and vermilion snap per will be new, and others that we do have at home such as black sea bass andIftriggerfish.youcharter a boat every day of a week’s vacation, God bless you, but most of us can’t afford to do that. Fortunately, the Outer Banks is lined with fishing piers where, for a very nominal fee, you can fish all day and into the night.

had always kept my boats on trailers or in a slip until I won a year at a new dry storage facility in Vir ginia Beach. I must admit I was very happy with the set up until the place burned down and every boat inside was completely lost. It is surprising that fiberglass burns completely and doesn’t leave so much as a trace. Just a lot of engines and boat rails where once there were 600 boats. Fortunately, I had a charter the next day and my boat was in the water.

I was lucky to get a space at another dry storage facility where I operated from until I moved back to Delaware. Once here, the only dry storage was at Indian River Marina meaning I would have to drive through quite a bit of traf fic to reach my boat. I decided to keep it on a trailer in my yard.
