Spring Boat Show Fever

There are a lot of jokes about Maryland weather, specifically this time of year when you don’t know if you’re in the false spring, second winter, or true spring. But one thing is for certain, the Bay Bridge Boat Show is just around the corner which means the boating season has nearly begun!

I have been attending this show for many years now. True, it’s my job, but it’s also one of my favorite boat shows of the season (don’t tell the Annapolis Powerboat Show…). And this year when I sat down to write the Bay Bridge Boat Show guide as I do every March, I found myself even more excited than usual. For one, there are a few debuting boats! Which is rare for a spring boat show (learn more on pages 52-53).

And then I started chatting with FishTalk editor Lenny Rudow about the

FishTalk Fishing Spot and even if you’re not an angler, this area is packed with so many cool activities, experts, and demonstrations. You’ll find reef ball building, invasive fish samples for tasting, fresh oysters, charter guides, the Fishmobile traveling aquarium (we got a big laugh in the office when at first we thought the Fishmobile was one of the food trucks… woops!), cooking demonstrations, custom baits for sale, giveaways for the kids, a whole afternoon of fishing seminars on Saturday, and more.

And we can’t forget tried and true favorites like the PropTalk Demo Dock (how often do you get the opportunity to try before you buy?), the on-site food court, live music (this year the music is on Friday AND Saturday nights and there’s even a half-price Friday night ticket option valid 4-6 p.m.), free daily

seminars, on-water training, beer stations throughout the show, and of course, the fact that we will be there handing out the latest issues of PropTalk, FishTalk, and SpinSheet.

Bay Bridge Marina is such a beautiful location on the Bay and you just can’t beat the fun and camaraderie at this show. For everything you need to know in order to plan your visit, flip to page 49. New this year, PropTalk has the official boat show map! Flip to pages 54-55 to navigate the show and use the QR codes to pull up boat and exhibitor lists, more details on show highlights, and to purchase tickets.

We hope to see you there! Stop by and say hello; we’ll be in our usual spot, Tent F44.

VHF Radios

In our April issue, Capt. Mace Coleman wrote the article, “The Good Captain’s Annual Springtime Safe Boating Review” (proptalk.com/good-captains-annual-springtime-safe-boatingreview). He sent us this addition regarding VHF radios: Having a good VHF Radio onboard is very important. Cell phones may be useful for an emergency call, but they will not alert nearby boaters to your distress, and the Coast Guard can locate you more effectively by tracking a radio signal versus a cell phone signal. Additionally, most fixed-mount radios are now equipped with digital selective calling (DSC); even many hand-held models now have this feature. The DSC technology allows you to register your radio with the FCC and receive a Maritime Mobile Service Identity number; corresponding to this number will be information about your boat and whom to contact in the event of an emergency. DSC-equipped radios also feature an emergency button which when pressed will alert nearby boaters and the Coast Guard to your location and that you are in distress. Setting up DSC capability on your radio is easily handled through BoatUS and is free for members, while a minimal fee is charged for non-members.

PropTalk Spotlight

We welcome Nathan Younge to Team SpinSheet, PropTalk, FishTalk! As our new ad sales representative, Nathan brings to our crew years of boating experience, a natural sense of curiosity, and a desire to learn all things sailing, powerboating, and fishing.

Growing up in a military family, Nathan moved nearly a dozen times, including over six years living in England and Spain. These experiences instilled a love of travel, languages, and the bridging of cultures. Eventually his parents settled down on the

Dept. of Corrections: Marina Directory

In the March issue PropTalk Marina Directory, the Travel Lift Tonnage for Portsmouth Boating Center was listed as ‘7’ when it should be 70. The updated online Marina Directory can be found at proptalk.com/chesapeake-bay-marinas.

Cruising Club Notes

In the Cruising Club Notes article “The Boater Certification Course” (page 54, April issue), it notes that boater safety certification is required for Maryland boaters born after July 1, 1975. That is off by a few years. The correct date is July 1, 1972. Thank you to the Maryland Natural Resources Police for pointing it out. We appreciate your careful reading!

Spring Commissioning

In the Spring Commissioning article in the April issue of PropTalk, Vaughn Scott was incorrectly referred to as ‘he’ rather than ‘she,’ and Diversified Marine ‘Systems’ should be Diversified Marine Services. We are sorry for the confusion and have fixed both in our online article at proptalk.com

lower Chesapeake Bay waterfront (Poquoson, VA), where he enjoyed fishing, crabbing, and boating from his backyard.

Since 2021 Nathan and his wife have lived aboard a barge on the Potomac River at The Wharf Marina, where they also keep their Hunter 285 sailboat and Pennant daysailer.

Nathan began sailing when his wife purchased Flying Scot lessons for him at Belle Haven Marina in 2003, the same year their son was born. Sailing stuck, and Nathan is now a member of four sailing and boat-

ing clubs and is a two-time Century Club member. Off the Chesapeake, he has participated in several Caribbean flotilla excursions, and his longest offshore experience was in 2018, when he crewed the passage of the 105-foot, three-masted schooner Alliance from Honduras to the Florida Keys, on its way home to Yorktown, VA.

Nathan loves to learn and teach, so it is no surprise that he holds numerous sailing credentials from US Sailing and the American Sailing Association (including ASA 201 and 203 sailing instructor certifications), and he currently volunteers as an instructor at DC Sail. One of his goals is to get his Portuguese and Spanish nautical vocabularies to the point where he can teach sailing in three languages.

Off the water, Nathan’s hobbies include marine canvas and upholstery work—he loves his Sailrite sewing machine—and running. His longest race was in 2014, when he ran 114 miles in a 48-hour ultramarathon.

Recently retired from a career in international trade and development, Nathan says, “Now I’m ready to learn all facets of sailing, powerboating, and fishing. I love all three and could talk about them all day.”

Kallie Brennan shares this photo of her adopted dog Poppy. She says, “Poppy loves to spend time perched on the bow of the family’s Sportsman Heritage 230 center console boat on Indian River Bay in Delaware. She loves to go on her special sand bar (we dubbed Poppy Island) when the tide goes out to play with the other dogs!”

Your Spring Checklist

The time has finally come. After many winter months staring longingly at the water, the boat is splashed, the weather is warmer, and the days are longer. You’re all ready to go… except for this last list. It’s the little things that, when put together, can really make or break your season, so take the time to run through just one more checklist to ensure that it lives up to everything you’ve been dreaming of these past months.

First, let’s talk safety. How are your PFDs doing? Have they been molding in a storage locker all winter? Pull them out, make sure you have enough for everyone aboard, give them a good inspection and a scrub, and buy new ones if necessary. If you have auto-inflating PFDs, check the CO2 cartridge. How about fire extinguishers, smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, and high-water alarms in the bilge? Do you meet USCG requirements? Are extinguishers full and alarm batteries charged? Now onto VHF radios, flares, EPIRBs, and all of your other signaling devices. Test

your radio and make sure it still holds a charge if it’s handheld. Make sure your flares aren’t expired and that all of your other safety equipment is easily accessible and in working order. Is there a safe boating class you meant to sign you, your crew, or your kids up for? Do it now! You won’t regret it.

Now, housekeeping. How do your dock lines look? Do you need new ones or some additional chafe gear? What about your galley? Is there food stored in some corner that you forgot about, a bag of trash you never took out, or some sauce crusted onto a stove or grill? Go ahead and deep clean all of that to start your season fresh. Do the same with your head, and maybe clean those cushions, too. While you’re at it, take a look inside all of your storage lockers, live wells, and bilges. Is there mold hiding anywhere? What about disorganized gear, hardware, tools, or half-used cans of paint or cleaning products taking up space that you could use for the new toys you got over the winter?

Remove anything you don’t need now to save yourself from the mid-summer purge.

Now onto the gear that you removed last fall that ought to be returned to the boat. Where are your beach towels, sunscreen, bug spray, sunglasses, pool toys, extra sweatshirts, rain jackets, and first aid kit? Does your galley have the dishes and spices you’ll want for your first meal aboard? Have your extra dock lines, anchor rode, and fenders made it back into their lockers?

Lastly, have you made any definitive boating plans yet? Spontaneous afternoons on the water are wonderful, but only if you actually follow through. Set aside some time this summer to travel beyond your normal stomping grounds and make your marina reservation early for that busy holiday weekend. Set some goals—maybe it’s achieving a certain number of days on the water, or visiting that fishing spot all your friends have mentioned, or planning a big rendezvous for July 4—and stick to them!

Upcoming Deck Replacement on the Bay Bridge

This past October, the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) approved a $140 million construction contract to replace sections of the eastbound Bay Bridge deck, with plans to begin major construction this upcoming fall and complete the project by 2026. In March, the first crane arrived alongside the bridge to begin preparations for the deck replacement.

According to the MDTA, the deck replacement will enhance safety and help to preserve the Bay Bridge by replacing sections that are nearly 50 years old and past their functional lifespans. In addition to completing this crucial maintenance, the MDTA hopes to disrupt commuter traffic as little as possible by performing the bulk of the work overnight to avoid the need for any 24/7 lane closures. Day crews will prepare sections during off-peak hours to ensure that overnight crews can remove the next deck panel, install the new one, and reopen the lane in time for morning traffic. When eastbound lanes are closed,

the westbound span will become multidirectional.

This three-year project is worth paying attention to for anyone living and driving in the area, but it is also especially relevant to boaters. Due to the MDTA’s intent to minimize impacts to drivers, many of their operations will be based on the water below, such as the first crane that arrived recently. New deck plates will reach the

bridge via tug and barge, and several more floating cranes are expected to arrive by the fall. Powerboaters are asked to “Make No Wake for Worker and Waterway Safety,” but in addition to that, sailors should be mindful and give working crews, their barges, and other equipment a wide berth, for the safety of both the sailors and the workers. Stay up to date on the project’s progress at mdta.maryland.gov.

On-water demos will run from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4:30 p.m., and during that time informal coaching on SUP or rowing will be available on the beach. Technical seminars will run at 10 a.m., noon, and 2 p.m., approximately. The exact schedule may adjust slightly, so check the website, clcboat.com, before heading to Centreville. The kids’ cardboard boat building and race will begin

at 1 p.m., and boat building awards will be presented at 4 p.m.

There is no trailer launching on the beach, so bring a dolly to launch if you have one. Big boat launch information to be available soon.

Camping will be available Friday and Saturday nights, so make a whole weekend of it. Conquest Beach is situated on the 758-acre Conquest Preserve between the Corsica and Chester Rivers. It boasts a living shoreline and a huge pavilion that can seat more than 100 people. The

facility has nice restrooms and indoor showers. No fires and no pets. Camping reservations must be made by May 8. Camping is restricted to tents and small campers (less than 13 feet in length).

This event was formally known as OkoumeFest. It took a hiatus in 2020 due to the pandemic and ran in 2021 as a low-key, outdoor affair. Last year it was a multi-day festival at Camp Wabanna in Edgewater, MD. Find more information and registration for this year’s event at clcboats.com.

Maryland Public Television (MPT) celebrates the Chesapeake Bay region once again in April with its 19th annual Chesapeake Bay Week, a slate of more than 30 documentary programs highlighting the beauty, importance, and fragility of the nation’s largest estuary.

During the week of April 16-22, MPT will offer more than 22 hours of content focusing on the Chesapeake Bay’s history, heritage, and resources as well as efforts to protect its diverse ecosystem. This year’s lineup includes 11 programs that viewers will see on MPT for the first time.

Chesapeake Bay Week

Cornerstone MPT productions premiering this year are Water’s Edge: Black Watermen of the Chesapeake on Monday, April 17 at 8 p.m.; Discovering the Dove on Tuesday, April 18 at 8 p.m.; Kent County’s Storied Landscape: Place – Past and Present on Tuesday, April 18 at 8:30 p.m.; and Eatin’ Blue Catfish: Chesapeake Style on Thursday, April 20 at 8 p.m.

Chesapeake Bay Week content will be available to view on MPT-HD and through the station’s livestream at mpt.org/livestream, MPT’s online video player, and the PBS App.

Water’s Edge: Black Watermen of the Chesapeake explores stories of bravery and resilience in an industry packed with African American pioneers. Meet trailblazers including a steamboat captain who revolutionized recreation for Black Marylanders in the early 20th century, a pair of renowned sailmakers from Chestertown, and present-day innovators shifting their businesses to meet a changing market.

In Discovering the Dove, join a team of shipbuilders as they attempt to recreate a 17th century shipping vessel through clues in passenger diaries, period artwork, and sunken ships. Watch as the new Maryland Dove takes shape in St. Michaels and accompany the crew for her maiden voyage across the Chesapeake Bay to Historic St. Mary’s City during this MPT-produced documentary.

In Kent County’s Storied Landscape: Place – Past and Present, walk the coastline where Native Americans lived, uncover evidence of a centuries-old oyster roast, find out what a new map of the region has revealed, and join the search for African American heritage in this exploration of Kent County’s unique cultural landscape.

In Eatin’ Blue Catfish: Chesapeake Style, visit the kitchens of Maryland-area chefs as they test delicious ways to prepare and serve the savory predator, a tasty but unwelcome guest that threatens to upset the biological balance of the Chesapeake Bay.

For video previews of each of these programs and more, visit mpt.org/bayweek.

ORP Will Receive Marine Conservation Award

The National Maritime Historical Society (NMHS) will honor the Oyster Recovery Partnership with its inaugural 2023 NMHS Marine Conservation Award in recognition of their commitment to the health of the Chesapeake Bay through the successful restoration of oyster populations, shell recycling conservation, and sustainable fishery practices. The award will be presented at the 12th annual National Maritime Awards Dinner at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, on May 9. A single adult oyster can filter more than 50 gallons of water a day, and over the past 29 years, ORP has planted a staggering 10 billion oysters. The NMHS Marine Conservation Award acknowledges their exemplary work as stewards of our waterways, protecting and restoring ecosystems, promoting the sustainable management of marine resources, safeguarding and improving

the well-being of the communities that depend on these resources, and increasing public awareness about the importance of protecting marine environments.

ORP, with its broad coalition of partners, works to improve the health of the Bay through aquaculture, shell recycling, community awareness, and support of oyster farming and commercial fisheries to improve the environment and expand economic opportunities in the Chesapeake region.

ORP joins previous NMHS maritime environmentalist award winners David Rockefeller Jr. and Sailors for the Sea, Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Conservation International, and the National Geographic Society.

The annual National Maritime Awards Dinner is the singular national event in the United States to honor the leaders of our maritime heritage community, drawing trailblazers from across the country.

Aerial Alert Signals

ALERT SIGNALS attract attention day or night and signal that you are in trouble.

The U.S. Coast Guard recommends that you fire two aerial flares, one immediately after the other, so rescuers can confirm the sighting and/or direction of the signal.

Long distance aerial flares (ALERT SIGNALS) and short distance (3 miles or less) handheld flares (LOCATE SIGNALS) are the brightest most dynamic signals when rescuers have been sighted.

For passive, long duration signaling (when you aren’t sure who is out there), consider the Orion Electronic SOS Beacon. Experienced boaters carry an assortment and Orion has them all!

Southern Bay Summer Festival Roundup

It’s the beginning of summer festival season, and the Southern Bay has something to offer nearly every weekend. If you’re planning a trip into Virginia waters this summer, here are some major events to look for that you may have missed!

On May 6 and 7, visit Town Point Park in downtown Norfolk for the city’s bi-annual Wine Festival to sample over 200 vintages from 30 local Virginia wineries with a view of the Elizabeth River as your backdrop. Come on Saturday for a bustling social experience or bring a blanket and picnic snacks on Sunday to relax instead. Day-of tasting tickets are $50 Saturday and $45 Sunday.

May 20 through 22, Norfolk’s Town Point Park will host the Cajun Music and Food Festival where you can feast on crayfish, alligator sausages, and beignets before jamming out to one of many New Orleans-style musical performances with a hurricane cocktail in hand. Single day tickets purchased on arrival are $15, or spring for the $90 boater’s package, which includes dockage for boats 35 feet and un der and admission for up to four people.

June 2 through 4, head to the Virginia Beach oceanfront to witness Jackalope Fest, which includes competitions and demonstrations from world-renowned skateboarders, BASE jumpers, boulderers,

skimboarders, and more, as well as popup shops and afterparties. Admission to spectate is free! June 9 through 11, Harborfest returns to downtown Norfolk, where you can see fireworks, a parade of sail, live music, and enjoy delicious food and drink all on the waterfront. Harborfest is free and open to the public.

In July, why not celebrate Independence Day in Yorktown? The town’s annual free, family-friendly celebration boasts all the

normal festivities, including fireworks over the river, with the bonus that you’re experiencing it in the place where independence was won.

These are only a few of the festivals and events lined up this summer in the Southern Bay. To find more details, other events, and to stay up to date on the latest announcements, check out visitnorfolk. com, festevents.org, visitvirginiabeach.com, and virginiasriverrealm.com.

New Opportunities To Get Out on the Water in Annapolis

Even if you don’t own a boat, there are lots of opportunities to get out on the water in Annapolis. Two new ones have recently arrived in Annapolis: a “Party Boat” and “Tiki Boat.”

The Tiki boat option is called the Naptown Tiki Club. It is owned and operated by Sea Suites Cruises, which already has boats on the waterfront in Washington, DC, and Richmond, VA, and has added

this season Paddle Club cruises out of Harborview Marina in Baltimore.

Naptown Tiki boat will offer trips for groups of eight to 16 people to cruise for an hour and a half. Tickets range from $45 to $55. Passengers may gather at the boat’s semi-circular bar or in the vessel’s lounge area. In Baltimore, you will find the Paddle Club, which offers a 30-foot pontoon pedal boat that can accommodate up to 20

guests. Cruises last one hour and 45 minutes. Pedaling is for fun and not required to make the boat move; it has a motor.

Both boats are staffed with a captain and deckhand, carry Bluetooth enabled speakers, come with ice and coolers, and have a private head. Passengers bring their own food and beverages. Learn more and make reservations at seasuitecruises.com

Also new this season is the Party Boat Annapolis, which offers 90 minute cruises for groups of up to six people for $55 or $65 per person. A crew of two handles the 30-foot pontoon boat, while guests sit at pedal stations around the bar top and on bench seating. An outboard motor does the real work. Pedaling is optional. Ice, coolers, and Bluetooth enabled speakers are onboard. You’ll tour Spa Creek and Annapolis Harbor. For ages 12 years and older. Restrooms at the dock but not onboard. Depending on the cruise you book, you’ll meet the boat either at Annapolis City Dock or Nautilus Point Marina. Learn more and make reservations at partyboatannapolis.com

Contender 24S: Let the Sun Shine

Contender earned its reputation building hardcore fishing boats in the 80s and 90s, but don’t let that fool you. Years ago they made the conscious decision to blend angling acuity with family friendliness, and today’s Contender 24S remains a prime example of how a center console designed with both factors in mind can indeed please just about everyone, just about all the time.

The best example of the mixed-use nature of the 24S can be seen at the transom. Rather than the usual fold-out bench seat with livewells and/or fishbox behind it, Contender molds seats into the transom itself on either side, with a 26-gallon livewell centered between them. You can get just as far aft to work a fish as you can with more common transom designs, and you never have to fumble with one of those awkward folding seats in order for your guests to sit down for the cruise home. Added bonus: the seat cushions turn down to act as coaming bolsters when you lean against them while

fishing. True, there’s no fishbox in the transom, but you’ll never miss it considering that there are two 30-gallon boxes in the deck and a 94-gallon box up forward.

The bow design is similarly split between missions, with flanking seats built-in and a removable center insert that converts the bow into one big U-shaped seat. You can leave the insert at home to enjoy the extra deck space when fishing on big water, or keep it in place, yank the cushions, and use it as an elevated casting deck when fishing inshore. There’s also a small seat integrated into the front of the console (with a cooler underneath), so all in all a half-dozen or so people can kick back and relax in the bow when entertain-

ing takes precedence over piscatorial pursuits.

From the Chesapeake angler’s viewpoint, all the angling bases are covered. There are four rocket launchers on the leaning post, four more up top, four flush-mounts in the gunwales, vertical racks for four rods along the console, racks for four rigs in the inwales, and a raw water washdown. The helm counts as an angling highlight, too, with an exceptionally large flat ready for flushmounting some heavy-duty electronics.

One trait Contender has always been known for is a smooth ride, courtesy of the deep-V hull designs they employ

along with their hand-laid construction and foam-cored stringer system. Another highlight that really deserves to be called out, however, is the integrated bracket design. Extending well beyond the transom, it provides a sizable swim platform and moves the center of gravity aft, aiding in the boat’s ride and performance. Plant a Yamaha F300 on the back, and this boat will break the 50-mph mark. Throttle back to 4000 rpm and a 30-mph cruise, and you’ll enjoy better than 2.5 mpg. But perhaps most importantly, whatever speed you run at everyone aboard will remain comfortable in a chop.

Is the 24S a hardcore fishboat the likes of which originally made Contender, well, a true contender? Nope. Is it a cushy family cruiser? Nope again. Will it make both fishers and the family happy? You bet. In fact, most everyone will agree that it’s the perfect blend for enjoying sunny days on the Bay, no matter the mission you have in mind. #

Queen Anne’s County

Whether you’re in town for the Bay Bridge Boat Show or planning a visit here specifically, Queen Anne’s County (QAC) has endless possibilities. Located on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, QAC has 265 miles of waterfront, much of it along the shores of Kent Island.

Start Your Visit

If this is your first visit, start your journey at the Chesapeake Heritage and Visitor Center (CHVC). CHVC serves as Queen Anne’s County official welcome center and is the central hub for the highly acclaimed Cross Island Trail. Staff can assist visitors with directions, information, and local destination points of interest. Here you’ll also find interactive informational displays dedicated to the history, heritage, and culture of the county. Take the elevator or the spiral staircases to the outdoor viewing tower for breathtaking 360 views of the Kent Narrows Waterfront.

Get outside

Also located on the property of the CHVC is the entrance to Ferry Point Park which includes a 530-foot boardwalk that takes visitors over marsh and onto a trail leading to open space, a wooded area, and a beach overlooking the Chester River.

The Cross Island Trail is a tree-lined path that offers a safe avenue for nonvehicular transportation. At 6.5 miles long, it spans east to west from Terrapin Park to the Chesapeake Heritage and Visitor Center. The trail wanders through farmlands, meadows, and woods accented with ornamental trees. Flanked by park benches, it crosses several creeks

with wooden bridges, offering a spectacular view of waterfowl and wetlands. Portable toilets are available year-round, and pets are allowed on leash.

The 276-acre Terrapin Nature Park in Stevensville features a 3.25-mile oyster chaff walking trail, which meanders through wildflower meadows, wetlands, tidal ponds, woodlands, and sandy beaches. A gazebo and wheelchair-accessible boardwalk afford a spectacular view of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, and park benches located along the trail provide a brief respite.

The Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center (CBEC), just south of Kent Narrows, is situated on a 510-acre preserve. Visitors can explore native woodlands, tidal marshes, and meadows, all through specially designed self-guided experiences. CBEC is also known as a birding hotspot, with over 240 species of birds found there throughout the year. There is no admission fee to explore the property on your own, but donations are appreciated to help maintain trails. Visit bayrestoration.org to download the self-guided experiences brochure. If you would like to get out on the water, kayak and paddleboard rentals are available first come/first serve from April 22-November 1. Kayak rentals are $20 per vessel/day and paddleboards cost $30. If you plan on paddling often at CBEC, consider purchasing a membership, as rentals are free to members.

See the Bay

Want to hang by the water with your pup? Head to Matapeake Clubhouse and Beach on Kent Island. A winding trail through the woods ends at the Dog Beach, on the sandy banks of the Chesapeake Bay. Parking is located at the Matapeake Clubhouse and Public Beach lot; however, pets are not allowed at the clubhouse, its lawn, or the public beach. The pet trail begins at the fence that borders the rear of the clubhouse. Don’t forget to bring bags to clean up after your pet!

Find Respite on Wye Island

If you’re looking for a quiet place to relax and enjoy the beauty of the Chesapeake Bay, look no further than Wye Island Natural Resources Management Area (NRMA) in Queenstown, MD. Of Wye Island’s 2800 acres, 2450 are managed by the Maryland Park Service for resource management, recreation, and agriculture. Wildlife viewing and hiking are the most popular activities on Wye Island’s six miles of trails. Download a map of the trails at dnr.maryland.gov. Fishing is also permitted from the shoreline (all anglers 16 years of age and older must have a valid fishing license).

Kayaking and canoeing are excellent ways to explore the beautiful, everchanging shoreline. A soft launch is located at the Granary Creek Picnic Area for non-motorized vessels only. Other nearby public launch facilities, including those that accommodate motorized boats, are available at Queen Anne’s and Talbot County parks. For more information on these sites, visit qac.org or talbotparks.org.

The coves found around Wye Island provide excellent anchorage for the night or weekend. The most popular spots are Granary Creek and Dividing Creek, located off the Wye East River and anchorages near Drum Point on the Wye River. Boaters are permitted to come ashore and explore. When coming ashore, boaters are urged to use good judgement, and pick a spot where the shoreline is gently sloped to minimize any ecological damage.

Go Fishing

There are a multitude of charter fishing boats and “head boats” located in Stevensville, Kent Narrows, and Centreville. Depending on the season and sportfish you seek, you can find a boat that fits

your needs at visitqueenannes.com/fishing-and-boating. You can also find a list of public launch points at this link, along with details on the public fishing piers in Stevensville.

The 650-foot Matapeake Fishing Pier and 25-foot-wide boat ramp are open 24 hours a day year-round. The facility has restrooms and a picnic area with grills (open sunrise to sunset, no pets). A Queen Anne’s County Public Landings Permit is required or Queen Anne’s County Slip Renter Tag (for use of ramp only) or Maryland State Golden Age Pass. Use of the fishing pier costs $2.50 per vehicle/per hour.

The 600-foot lighted Romancoke Fishing Pier and kayak launch provides access to Eastern Bay. Seasonal crabbing is popular at this facility. Permanent restrooms are available April through November. The picnic area is open from sunrise to sunset, and the pier and kayak launch are open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. (no pets).

The Local’s Perspective

PropTalk’s very own Brooke King calls QAC home, so of course we had to ask her what she loves most about the county and some of her favorite spots. She says, “I loved growing up and raising a family here. There’s lots of outdoorsy stuff and tons of boating and fishing, and it’s just

a short boat ride to Annapolis and Baltimore and less than two hours’ drive to Fenwick Island/Ocean City. You have lots of elbow room when you live here.”

Favorite Eateries

• Big Bats for the New York hot dog.

• Bridges Restaurant is great for going by boat and for the view. They have tasty pizzas, slips for patrons, live music, and the hostess staff is amazing.

• Knoxie’s Table at The Inn at the Chesapeake Beach Club for the atmosphere and food. The Chilean Sea Bass and Chopin martini with blue cheese stuffed olives is fantabulous!

• Pour House for brunch.

• Cult Classic Brewing for craft beer and all sorts of entertainment.

• Harris Crab House for crabs, of course, and homemade nutty buddies.

• Last but not least, we love to support our local American Legions. And of course, we had to ask what her tips were for avoiding Bay Bridge traffic. Brooke recommends visiting mdta.maryland.gov/traffic-camerasby-facility#camera-999 or calling (877) 229-7726 for real time traffic updates. She says, “I use it all the time to avoid unnecessary jam ups!”

# There are a multitude of fishing opportunities available, from charter boats to public fishing piers. There is so much more to see and do in Queen Anne’s County, and we couldn’t possibly cover it all in one article. For more information and to help plan your visit, head to visitqueenannes.com.

So, you want to be a Captain? Getting your license is a worthy enough goal, but do you know why you want it? Most of those who want a license already know why they want or need it. Perhaps you want to run a fishing charter boat of your own, or give sightseeing tours on the Potomac, or you are applying for a job that requires you to have a license as a condition of employment; all are excellent reasons. Captain’s licenses are issued by the U.S. Coast Guard, and are properly referred to as a Merchant Mariner Credential, or MMC. An MMC is not just issued for captains; any type of merchant mariner, from AB (deckhand) to Oiler to Mate, may have an MMC. Also, there are more than one type and grade of Captain’s license, so it’s handy to simply refer to it as an MMC. Licenses are valid for five years, then must be renewed, and they are assigned by the Coast Guard in accordance to the vessel tonnage that you are expected to operate. The most common designation is 100 ton, or 100 GRT (Gross Registered Tonnage).

When I first told my wife Denise that I was going to get my Captain’s license, she smirked and replied, “Well, you’re not going to be the Captain of the Love Boat. You know that, right?”

Well, I more or less knew that, but why, you might ask, did I pursue my license? In my case, I had been boating on New England waters practically all of my life and had done a hitch in the Coast Guard many years before. Now, it was around 2008, and our country’s economy was in a bit of a downturn, and business was slow. A captain friend suggested that I might benefit from getting my own license as a way of finding additional employment and making some extra money on the side.

Many licensed captains began simply as owners of their own sportfishing boat, such as a center console model, taking

family and friends out fishing on the weekend simply because it’s much more fun to fish with others than to fish alone. That could be you, of course. Then someone suggests that you could make money to pay for your gas by taking paying passengers out for day fishing trips, and before you know it, you’re in the captain’s classroom. This is, in part, due to the fact that in order to take paying passengers out on the water for whatever reason, you must have a license (MMC).

But before charging ahead full throttle, you might want to consider that there are hurdles to jump before

you get your license; that’s why it is good to understand the process and to plan ahead. A 100-ton license really is a working license; you are going to use it to make money. Regardless of what you do with it, the amount that you will earn can vary widely.

Plenty of folks who want to obtain a Captain’s MMC begin the effort harboring a number of misconceptions, so it’s good to clear them up ahead of time.

Capt. Art Pine of the Chesapeake Bay Professional Captains’ Association (CAPCA), writes that “The first and possibly biggest hurdle is to amass the required small-vessel sea-service time.

PropTalk.com May 2023 59

To qualify for a license, you need to have logged 360 days on the water in the operation of vessels—with a minimum of four hours each day—at least 90 of which must have occurred during the past three years. You have to present a record of each qualifying day to include on the appropriate form in your application. And you’ll need the signatures of the owner(s) of all those boats to attest to your presence during those times. (If you own the boat, you can attest to your sea-experience yourself.) You’ll also have to pass a few written exams proving that you’re familiar with the rules of the road, coastal navigation, and deck safety; the tests must be proctored by the nearest Coast Guard Regional Exam Center, or you can take a Coast Guard-approved course that is authorized to administer the license exams.”

I attended weeks of classes at Massachusetts Maritime Academy and had a lot of ‘sea-time’ that I could prove in order to qualify for my MMC. If you own a boat or spend a good amount of time every summer out on the Bay running your own boat or working as a mate aboard one,

you can probably document enough time.

The captain’s license ‘grade’ that you get is matched to the size vessel that you have operated in earning your sea time. You don’t automatically get a 100-ton (100 GRT) classification, especially for folks who have operated smaller vessels. You can get what is known as a ‘raise in grade’ after you have earned your initial MMC, but you still need experience on a bigger boat to get a higher-tonnage license. I was initially awarded a 50-ton license because I had operated small boats of my own, none larger than 40 feet, for years. When I wanted a ‘raise in grade’ as it is termed, to 100 GRT, I had to obtain records of my U.S. Coast Guard experience on a 213-foot cutter (decades back). That did the trick, though. No matter how long ago, “Sea time never goes away,” a Coast Guard rep advised me.

Also, you must pass a physical exam including overall health and vision in order to get your MMC. You can download the forms and then your doctor must fill out the paperwork and sign off

on them. Make sure ahead of time that your doctor or medical facility is approved to complete and submit these forms. Your blood sugar must be in control, your vision correctable to a certain level, etc. When all of this is complete, you submit all your paperwork to the Coast Guard.

You will be required to pass a drug test administered by an approved clinic in your area. Many occupations from truck driving to working on airplanes require initial and occasional random drug testing, so a drug

testing clinic should be easy to find and set up an appointment with. Remember that even if your state has made pot legal, it’s still never OK with the Coast Guard, so if you plan to be a Master for a long time, you can’t use pot or recreational drugs.

Next, you will need to pass a CPR/ First Aid course and get a certificate attesting to it. Courses are generally organized by the American Red Cross (ARC) and held locally. You must attend in person with others and practice your skills on a CPR mannequin. The credential is valid for two years. Your license is good for five years, so of course you will need to re-certify your CPR/ First Aid certificate every two years. You will also need to obtain a Transportation Worker’s Identification Card, or TWIC, which takes time, biometric testing, and fingerprinting, and has a different expiration date than your license or CPR certificate. Some places such as AAA centers will offer access to TWIC services.

It’s quite a few hoops to jump through, so remember to start the process early. I suggest at least a year before you anticipate needing your license. It takes the Coast Guard time to process your paperwork, review your documented sea time and recommendation letters, take your tests, and anything else.

It’s also very important to recognize that operating a vessel with passengers aboard is a tremendous and serious responsibility. Although it’s not pleasant to say, the captain of any vessel wears the biggest target of all on his or her back in the event of a mishap; for this reason, it is often advisable for a captain to have marine liability insurance. The cost varies, and although it isn’t required to operate a vessel, the more time you spend in the wheelhouse, the more advisable it becomes.

One of the brightest days of your career, no matter what you do normally for a living, will be the day that your MMC arrives in the mail! #

Life Abo A rd:

Some people are lucky enough to be impacted by people, places, and events at a young age that form childhood dreams and propel them to great achievements reaching for those dreams. The Annapolis Capital Gazette recently featured friend and fellow Annapolitan, Fred Gregory, making that exact point. Fred was deeply influenced by seeing the USAF Thunderbirds flight demonstration team as a youngster. Armed with a dream to fly, he went to the Air Force Academy, became an Astronaut, and later Deputy Administrator of NASA. Noble dreams begot noble achievements.

For some of us, those childhood influences produce dreams maybe a notch lower than Fred’s. In my case, the exposure to boats for the first time around 10 years old, led to a dream to

live aboard a boat someday. And so it was that fresh out of graduate school, a job at the University of Maryland found me looking for a boat to call home. Given Washington, DC, metro apartment prices, it was actually a less expensive option. Bonus!

In the fall of 1980, I bought a 12-year-old 34-foot houseboat and parked her in Bladensburg, MD, (yes, there used to be a marina in Bladensburg on the upper navigable reaches of the Anacostia River). The houseboat manufacturer was DriftR-Cruz, founded by World War II veteran Jack McKee. It was the first houseboat made from that new stuff—fiberglass.

With the first model introduced in 1961 Jack was on his way to being the king of houseboats. Sadly, his reign

ended early with his death in 1966. But in that short stretch he outsold the rest of the budding industry combined. After his death, the company was acquired by Thunderbird Products (makers of Fountain Boats today), which continued production well into the 70s.

My 1968 model had a grand total of 180 square feet of living space. It was heaven, though maybe a little tight even for a 20-something bachelor. Living aboard a small boat is a lesson in Euclidean geometry. I learned early on to limit the things I brought onboard and began a long boating journey earning my “PhD” in space utilization.

The houseboat gave way to marriage and a condo. It was followed by a string of sailboats. Space considerations, always a thing

on boats, became somewhat less critical doing day sailing and weekend cruising. But a second dream was at work!

As we true believers know, a bad day on a boat is better than a good day in the office. The sailboats and the Bay as my playground were fine, as far as that went. The office was ever so important as a place to make sure one could afford boats. Still, there was always that longing for more boat time and less office time. Those pressures and conflicts combined to conjure up a dream of post-retirement ICW transits and winters in South Florida, living aboard once again!

Fast forward, that dream is also now a reality. We (I and my boat partner in marriage, Sue) have been to South Florida each winter since 2015/16. We have done so on a 46foot trawler and an ill-advised condo. This winter/spring we have been living in Stuart, FL, on our present boat, a Back Cove 37 named Winsome Winn She has about 230 square feet of living space, a 30-percent boost from the old houseboat. But, with Sue, we have a 100-percent boost in souls onboard. Space, to say the least, is at a premium.

Our Back Cove 37, seemingly perfect for cruising and living aboard for weeks at a time, grew smaller this January as we settled into longer term life aboard. We began to talk openly about a larger boat. We even flirted with owning two boats, one effectively a houseboat for Florida and the Back Cove for cruising the rest of the year.

I am not sure exactly how bad it got, but I think Sue was using so much bandwidth perusing Yacht World that the marina Wi-Fi occasionally crashed. After looking, thinking, making spreadsheets, and considering many options and permutations, we decided to make the space we had work for us and stick with one cruising and liveaboard boat. In the background you should now hear the words of Sheryl Crow’s 2002 hit song, “Soak up the Sun:” “It’s not having what you want, it’s wanting what you’ve got.”

To make this commitment work, the Container Store became our best

friend. All manner of storage ideas came to fruition. Sue even found a small foldable ironing board and I dutifully found a place to park it. Okay, we did cheat a little. We bought the biggest dock box we could find and installed it dockside. Yes, it is full.

We have found it is comfortable to do the work we still do together at the main salon table. It fits two computers and accompanying papers. We found a small printer and a place for it above the galley. If we both need to be on a call or worse, a Zoom, it gets a little complicated. I have done Zoom from the car in the marina parking lot and walked the docks endlessly on phone calls.

Coffee is a very important component of boating. They say the US Navy lives on coffee. It is a critical element on Winsome Winn. We found a built-in coffee maker from Brew Express (similar models found on certain Legacy and Fleming Yachts) and installed it. Installed, it is so

much more out of the way than a regular countertop model (note: Brew Express is moving production to the US and temporarily out of coffeemakers).

Hanging lockers on smaller boats do not really accommodate living aboard. We added a temporary additional closet rod in the guest cabin. It gets a little complicated when we want to use the

guest cabin for actual guests, but we have figured it out.

Meal preparation and entertaining paraphernalia presented a substantial challenge. Nesting bowls and collapsible measuring cups are a big help. A custom knife block provided a place to store the sharps and made the serving utensil drawer safe for rooting around in.

The moral of this story, if it is not painfully obvious at this point, is that you can live comfortably aboard a fairly small boat. Having a good understanding of your most critical needs, geometry, and an Amazon account will help a lot. So, take a fresh look at your favorite floating fiberglass and see her in a new light—a home! #

Abit over a decade ago, the Defever 44 Indian Summer came into our lives. We and the Burnetts had grand plans for long cruises—some of which we actually did and reported in PropTalk. We never got to the Mississippi part of the Great Loop, however. So, when seeking a late-winter respite, Lucy found the Lower Mississippi River Cruise on American Symphony, a river cruise ship launched in 2022 at Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Salisbury, MD.

Symphony is small compared to oceangoing cruise ships, but compared to the 44-foot Indian Summer, she’s huge: 328 feet x 59 feet x 12.3 feet. There are some differences other than size, too.

For instance, it almost seems there is at least one American Cruise Line employee standing by each passenger to make sure there is no hint of discomfort—and certainly not hunger or thirst. Here and there are scattered bowls of freshly baked cookies. And all navigation and boat handling challenges are handled by the folks with stripey shoulder boards, so passengers can focus on the two dining rooms, several lounges, and the workout facility to shed the calories. Our itinerary began in New Orleans; we cruised on American Symphony from New Orleans to

Memphis with stops at Houmas House, Baton Rouge, Natchez, and Vicksburg, ending in Memphis. Most river travel was at night, with bus excursions to points of interest during the day. There were tours of old plantations and a catamaran swamp voyage featuring almost-tame alligators, turtles, wild pigs, and racoons. There were guided tours of Civil War battlefields, and time just to walk around and look at the port cities. Museums, particularly devoted to Black history, slavery, and the Civil War brought Mississippi history into perspective.

PropTalk.com May 2023 65
# American Symphony. Photos courtesy of American Cruise Lines # Charlie and Lucy Iliff # Riverboats are inherently smaller with fewer guests onboard, making for a more intimate and personalized travel experience.

On the boat, evening live music, some lectures, a bingo game, and other diversions competed with college basketball on the large-screen in the room and on the Wi-Fiattached iPad. It was March, you see.

We had envisioned the Mississippi as a pretty straight shot from Minnesota to the Gulf. In reality, the part we saw winds back and forth so sharply that one of the pilots told us he occasionally uses bow thrusters to supplement the turning power pods to get Symphony around a sharp and narrow bend. Occasional narrow spots and frequent tug and barge traffic require constant attention by the pilots. Routinely, we saw tugs pushing as many as eight barges lashed together. Those going upriver seemed barely moving against the five- to seven-knot current.

In a week on the river, we saw exactly zero pleasure boats, although a 15-foot aluminum skiff was launched from Symphony and ran around outside the moored cruise liner for a few minutes. We were

not surprised, since the lower Mississippi sees heavy commercial traffic, both moving and tied along the banks, and the current would make pleasure-boat handling a challenge. One of the pilots told us there are very few marinas where fuel is available for small boats. Symphony was fueled by a small tanker coming alongside in New Orleans and another in Memphis.

Meet David Sikorski, Angler and Outdoorsman

A stalwart steward of Maryland’s natural resources, David Sikorski, executive director of the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) Maryland, is keenly aware of the issues facing Chesapeake Bay fisheries and Maryland anglers. Here he shares a bit about himself, his work with CCA, and his love of the outdoors.

Who taught you to fish?

My father introduced me to fishing and has encouraged my obsession ever since. He would tell you it’s genetic, as his maternal grandfather went fishing on the Bay tributaries and ocean as much as he could. My earliest fishing memories are of days on the beach at Assateague or the Outer Banks in North Carolina. I can still see the first time a “dead” bluefish bit me, and yes, I probably spent most of the time playing in the sand and cutting up the bait.

Did you grow up on the water?

I grew up in Ellicott City, MD, playing in the woods and along the headwaters of the Little Patuxent River, not far from Centennial Lake. Through my early teenage years, my family had a house on the water in Ocean Pines, MD, where we had a canoe, a 13-foot Whaler, and a 17-foot Mako. It was during those years that I first learned the keys to boating.

Best part about life on the Bay?

The best part of the Bay is the endless opportunity for adventure. With over 11,600 miles of shoreline, there is something new to see or experience around every stroke of a paddle or turn of the wheel. You know that feeling when you push away from the dock, put the boat into gear, and push up the throttle and go? That’s it… that’s the best part.

Do you own a boat?

I recently sold a boat after pulling it around for 15 years of adventure. It was a 21-foot custom duck hunting boat that saw its fair share of fishing trips, raftups, and far off camping adventures. I still own a classic Gheenoe, a 1542 Jon boat, and a number of obscure and specialized water fowling boats. While I’m very fortunate to have a great network of CCA members and friends who are always ready to take me fishing, I secretly shop for my next boat on a weekly basis.

# Sikorski lands a chain pickerel catch on the Severn River.

Tell us about your life on land.

I live in Baltimore with my wife and our two boys and try to get away for outside adventures every chance I get. Camping has become a new focus of ours and is a great way to explore the many great parts of Maryland and get away from some of the more challenging Bay issues that are part of my work. I’m a backyard gardener and love to cook. After all, cooking is directly connected to why I fish and hunt, and why conservation is so important. What

gives you the most satisfaction in your role as executive director of CCA Maryland?

The most satisfying part of my job is knowing that the work I do every day is focused on benefiting the public and their future access to healthy resources. We, the public, entrust our government to manage our public resources for our benefit, and, well, you don’t have to look very far to find a story about that trust being squandered.

What is the most pressing issue for recreational anglers to be aware of, and what can they do to help protect fish and fisheries?

Blue Catfish. Period. These non-native fish are eating their way through everything that Maryland holds near and dear. With rockfish abundance continuing to waver, we need to set our sights on catching as many blue catfish as we can.

This is why CCA is running the Great Chesapeake Invasives Count (GCIC), an event that is free to enter and asks participants to report their catch of these fish in exchange for a chance at winning prizes. The data captured through the GCIC is provided to state biologists to support their efforts to better understand what is happening on the water. (Learn more and register to participate at ccamd.org.)

Anglers and boaters have long supported necessary conservation work through excise taxes, licenses, and other fees. Now we’re stepping up to use technology to further advance our science-based knowledge of what is happening in the Bay,

and that’s something everyone who cares should support.

I would encourage your readers to join CCA, or any other group focused on the future of our Bay, and get involved. Participate on the local level with your fellow members and use your voice to help shape policies. Clean water, healthy habitats, and fair and equitable access to our resources are the key to having a vibrant Bay for all to use in the future, and well, that stuff just doesn’t happen unless people roll up their sleeves and create the future we want. #

Asphalt Cruise to Beaufort

The 2023 Chesapeake Bay Grand Banks Owners Association (CBGBOA) cruise schedule launched with a successful port visit to the beautiful ICW water stop of Beaufort, SC. Hosted by Pat and Mike Harris, asphalt cruisers were treated to a rich history of this lowcountry treasure and its surrounding historic sights.

The weekend kicked off with a crew dinner and port brief at the lovely home of Pat and Mike overlooking the ICW

on the north side of the Beaufort peninsula. Members spent Friday and Saturday touring the landmarks surrounding Beaufort including the inspiring Penn Center, one of the first schools for formerly enslaved people in the United States, and the humbling as well as inspiring Parris Island Marine Corps Museum. Members were also entertained by extremely knowledgeable guides while touring the grand Beaufort homes and scenes used for filming such

movies as the Big Chill, Forrest Gump, the Great Santini, and many more.

The lowcountry and its outer banks are filled with natural treasures. Several of us ventured out to Hunting Island State Park, which is rich with waterfowl and boats a stately restored lighthouse. The beaches are secluded and have beautiful natural sculptures created by forestland lost to the sea.

Friday evening the crew assembled at Saltus River Grill for dinner and drinks overlooking the Beaufort River. On our final evening in Beaufort we had a very special treat. Fellow cruisers Perry and Nancy Dukes, friends of our hosts, took us in their GB 36 Vero for a Beaufort River cruise from Beaufort town dock to Port Royal Landing Marina ICW marker 244, where the Marker 244 Restaurant is located.

CBGBOA is an association of current, former, and prospective owners of Grand Banks yachts. We also welcome owners who have a cruising vessel similar to a Grand Banks. We sponsor social activities, cruises, and the exchange of information and ideas. We have seven more events planned for this season to include cruises on and off the Bay. Annual Spring Rendezvous

America’s Great Loop Cruisers’ Association (AGLCA) will hold its annual Spring Rendezvous May 1-4 at the Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel and Waterside Marina in Norfolk, VA. AGLCA members will come together to learn about the Great Loop route and general boating topics. The Great Loop is a circumnavigation of the eastern U.S. and part of Canada. The route includes the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, the New York state canals, the Canadian canals, the Great Lakes, inland rivers, and the Gulf of Mexico.

This annual spring event focuses on the portion of the route from the Chesapeake Bay to the Tennessee River, including Canada. Speakers will lead attendees through these waterways, pointing out favorite marinas, anchorages, things to

see and do, and navigational information along the way. There will be more than 10 hours of seminars in what is known as the Route Briefing track.

In addition to the Route Briefing track, attendees can attend sessions in the Looping 101 track. This encompasses more general looping and boating information, such as finding the perfect Great Loop boat, weather, marine electronics, and more.

Another highlight of the Rendezvous is the Looper Crawls that take place in the afternoons where the activity moves from

the meeting rooms to the docks. Many of the attendees who are tied up at the marina will open their boats for others to tour. It’s a great opportunity to see many different Loop-capable boats in one place, and it gives great ideas to anyone in the market for a boat. Plus, it’s a great social time!

It’s not too late to participate in that famous Looper camaraderie. Registration is still open, but you must be a member of AGLCA to attend. Visit greatloop/ org/joinus for details on membership, and for more details on the Rendezvous, visit greatloop.org/spring

Classic Boat Showstoppers

In the midst of all the new boats at the Atlantic City Boat Show, the ACBS Mid-Atlantic Chapter displayed outstanding classic boats and motors that were real showstoppers. A steady stream of boat lovers was attracted to the style and beauty of those classic wood boats and intrigued by a unique display of classic outboards.

The BSA Sea Scouts had a strong presence in the booth, and members of the local Sea Scouts division were also on-hand, explaining to the big crowd how their group is restoring a 40-foot former Coast Guard boat to make it seaworthy again. She will be ready for summer and will travel under the direction of these Sea Scouts to various ports along the New Jersey coast.

Sea Scouts is a program of the Boy Scouts of America for young men and women ages 14 to 20. Sea Scout units— called ships—are established all across the country on oceans, bays, rivers, and lakes. They provide limitless opportunities, solid maritime education, and exciting challenges that youth rarely find anywhere else.

The owners of Seaphilly.us were also in the booth. Husband-and-wife team Chris and Georgette conduct boat tours of Philadelphia’s waterfront aboard their 27-foot custom restored ChrisCraft. They have an impressive pier “comfort zone” at their dock in Penns Landing at 215 S Christopher Columbus Blvd, Philadelphia, PA. Guests can enjoy stunning views of the Ben Franklin Bridge from cozy lounge couches on their private dock equipped with romantic cafe lights, native landscaping, and a fire pit.

Several visitors to this booth thanked the ACBS members for featuring nearly a dozen classic restored outboard engines, each of them unique, stylish, and collectible. Several attendees said that they regretted not keeping their own classic outboard motors. Most of the attention however was focused on the Chris-Craft runabouts and the Italian-made Riva that were the featured wood classics, all restored to pristine condition. They shined as better-than-new boats, stunning and ready for great times on the water. Learn more about The Antique and Classic Boat Society at acbs.org

Classic Boat and Car Festival

On June 3 the Maryland Maritime Heritage Foundation (MMHF) will host a Classic Boat and Car Festival (free admission for spectators) at Wilmer Park in Chestertown, MD, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Classic cars and boats will be on display in the park and yacht basin. This year’s classic boat featured marque will be Chris-Craft. In honor of this marque, the festival will feature a very rare 1928 ChrisCraft 28-foot Model 1, which will be on land displayed for all to enjoy. Our classic car featured marque this year will be the MG. A local favorite 1964 MGB Tourer will

be on display. Be sure to stop by and say hello to all the exhibitors of these beautiful classics and pose for photographs.

We are proud of our heritage and the festival and owe this all to the classic boat and car enthusiasts who have participated. The MMHF extends a special thanks to everyone that makes the event possible, including our event planners, preparers, food and soft drink vendors, and our many event sponsors. We also offer our many thanks to the Town of Chestertown for permitting the use of beautiful Wilmer Park. Please visit mdmhf.org for more about us and view our photo gallery.

Top-of-the-Line Classic Century Coronado

Abig Gray Marine V-8 for power, a throaty exhaust, lots of style, a touch of automotive history (automotive windshield glass), more than a little chrome, and plenty of bright finished mahogany wood planking make a Century Coronado a thing of beauty on the water. This model and the ChrisCraft Cobra set the high-water mark for wooden boats in my book.

Tom Donley is the owner of this sweet Century Coronado. He’s a retired boat racer with an extensive background, first in a Spico-brand boat and then in a Rayson-Craft (more about that later).

Tom placed fourth in a Ski Racing Runabout in 1967 and was High Point Champion for Region 4 in 1971 in his JS 39 Jersey Speed Skiff. He also raced at the Miami Marine Stadium.

Since Tom is a racer, are the Coronados fast? Yes, when tuned up and lightly loaded, one can expect to achieve speeds between 55 and 60 mph, though speed alone was not what they were all about. A Coronado built on a wood hull could reportedly deep-water-start a dozen water skiers. The Coronado is known as a “pulling workhorse” among classic boats.

Century Boat Company produced this model in wood from 1955-1968. Slightly more than 1700 were made during that period. This is one of several styles over the years that were available on essentially the same running surface hull. Century later produced this model with a fiberglass hull and a deeper vee.

Typically, the Coronados have more glitz than almost any other runabout. For many years their windshields were fashioned from automotive industry glass. Often Coronados were highly styled by Richard Arbib, who previously worked for General Motors and Packard. For styling clues on the Coronado, reflect back to the Chrysler Imperial between 1959-63, when cars were heavy with chrome trim. Styling was always a calling card for the Coronado, regardless of the model year.

These boats are also famous for their deluxe padded interior amenities. For a moment, you might think you’re sitting on an over-stuffed living room sofa when you’re in any of the Coronado’s three rows of seating.

The Century Boat Company started in 1926 in Milwaukee, WI. The company quickly moved to Manistee, MI. Century also built hydroplanes, stepped hulls, inboard ski boats, outboard runabouts, inboards, fishing

boats, canoes, sailboats, cabin cruisers, and perhaps a surf boat, in addition to these top-of-the-line speedboats. Century even built a pink detailed outboard. If you regularly attend Antique and Classic Boat Shows, you may have seen women in line waiting to have their photos taken with the nicknamed “Barbie Boat.”

A Century Resorter was another storied model name associated with this boat builder. Resorters were produced in 15-, 16-, 17-, 18-, 19-, and 21-foot lengths. Although Resorters were also classic inboard, center engine boats, they featured a more open cockpit than a Coronado model. They were extremely popular for watersports.

In the second half of the 1960s, Century replaced its wooden boats with fiberglass versions of the same models. This practice was typical across the boating industry for original wooden boat builders. The owner of Tara Yachts made

a

the tooling and molds for many of the fiberglass hull Century boats.

Now back to Tom’s racing accomplishments. Here’s an interesting anecdote about why he switched from his Spico to a Rayson-Craft. Tom frequently raced against Rudy (who owned RaysonCraft boats), yet always seemed to lose ground going around turns on the racecourse. After one race in which they both competed, Rudy needed to get back to the West Coast and wanted to make the trip without a boat in tow. Tom saw

an opportunity to get a better turning boat, so he bought Rudy’s.

The Rayson-Craft definitely handled turns better on a racecourse. Rudy took Tom aside and told him it was because his boat was wider at the driver’s cockpit. That allowed the driver to get a better bite in the water going through the turn!

By the way, Tom’s Classic Coronado is frequently on display at the annual Antique and Classic Boat Festival in St. Michaels, MD. Mark your calendars for June 16-18. #

The socks have been burned. The clocks have been set ahead. The ospreys have returned, and the spring boat shows are almost here. There can be no doubt that spring has finally arrived. Local boatshops are completing winter projects and welcoming the spring commissioning rush.

Smokey Glover at Lake Assault Boats in Portsmouth, VA, reports: “We have the Brookfield, CT, Fire Department’s 24-foot Lake Assault fireboat in the Virginia Lake Assault facility for routine service and structural upgrades. Also, a 24-foot research boat is receiving new hardtop and upper station controls, steering, and electronics installation, utilizing Stainless Marine of Norfolk, VA, for the aluminum fabrication and Marlin Marine Electronics for electronics upgrades.”

The latest update from Eric Detweiler at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, MD, is as follows. “Christian Cabral, vice president of shipyard operations, reports that CBMM’s shipyard has been dedicated to a multitude of exciting projects this winter. The list includes the groundwork for the restoration of CBMM’s own buyboat Winnie Estelle, the construction of a new 36-foot buyboat Mr. Dickie, spar construction and annual care of Calvert Marine Museum’s buyboat Tennison, and the installation of a new interior on yet another Chesapeake buyboat, Choptank As we move into early spring, the bulk of CBMM shipwrights will focus on the new construction, Mr. Dickie. To date, the vessel has been constructed upside down in order to increase efficiency of the cross-planking process. During the month of March, shipwrights completed the planking and rotated the vessel right-side up to begin the deck installation.

“In tandem with Mr. Dickie’s construction, remaining CBMM shipwrights will focus on the interior installation, rig installation, and USCG certification of the recently launched 65-foot buyboat Choptank. The bulk of this work will be performed with the vessel in the water alongside CBMM’s shipyard. As always, early spring signals the commissioning of CBMM’s own historic floating fleet. This spring, our fleet will receive a complete rig service and an increased focus on some of our smaller fleet vessels that will spend the summer offering six-passenger Miles River cruises while Winnie Estelle undergoes an extensive refit.”

Jake Glover of Ferry Point Marina in Trappe, MD, checks in. “We’ve recently completed a Blackfin repower. She received a pair of Skip White marinized big blocks. Just out of the paint shop is

a Trojan which received a fresh barrier and bottom paint application as well as AwlCraft hull sides. Keep us in mind for your air conditioning needs this summer. We now have two techs with Dometic’s training. The Evolution Marine Electronics team has been staying busy with installs. Garmin and JL Audio seem to be the favorites.”

Bill Griffin reports that on his recent visit to Composite Yacht in Trappe, MD, the shops were busy as usual. “They had a couple of paint jobs underway including a Post 50 in for an all-over to deal with crazing and a Downeaster in for superstructure refinishing. The crew was also getting close to completing the final fairing on the new CY50.”

Bill also reported that the Zimmerman Deltaville, VA, shop refinished a 2001 Zimmerman Z-36 with Awlgrip and

that she looks “amazing.” According to Bill, the Tracys Landing, MD, location of Zimmerman Marine also does good work. “Well, there is nothing like the shine of new brightwork. The paint crew has meticulously prepped and applied seven coats of Awlwood—man, does this boat look sharp!”

We haven’t heard much from Alex Schlegel at Hartge’s in Galesville, MD, recently. No wonder; he and his crew have been busy. He brings us up to date. “Starting September 1, we have been running the service business at Hartge Yacht Harbor in addition to our ongoing operation at the Woodfield Road location. We will be working exclusively at Hartge Yacht Harbor by June 1. We moved our tents last fall, stockroom and office mid-February through mid-March, and half of our shops. We will move the carpenters, painters, and composite techs before June.

“We are having the normal, very busy spring as is everyone in the marine business. Launching and commissioning 75 boats at Woodfield’s and 105 boats at Hartge Yacht Harbor that were laid up for the winter will be completed in April. Most interesting of the boats in the yard is the 61-foot buyboat, Muriel Eileen. We have four carpenters replanking the yellow pine sides, replacing a few oak frames and a section of the yellow pine chine log. The original fasteners were steel including steel drift pins used to strengthen and tie the planks together. Buyboats were heavily loaded, sometimes until the deck was nearly awash, so

they had to be strong. For added strength, the inside of the frames was also planked, which is called ceiling. Some dimensions are: planks—two inches by 12 inches, up to 20 feet; chine log—two and a half inches by 10 inches; frames—four inches wide by five inches deep, planks fastened to frame with half-inch bronze carriage bolts, drift pins five-eighths-inch bronze, deck beams six inches wide by seven inches deep and supported by posts to the keel. This doesn’t seem so big in print, but handling and fitting wood this big and heavy is difficult.”

Alex also reports. “Other work: We had five boats in the heated tents for painting and varnishing over the winter. A number of boats and masts have kept our 75- by 35-foot paint booth busy painting hulls and decks with Awlgrip. The above is just about painters and carpenters. We also have a lot going on for fiberglass technicians, mechanics, and riggers. Other than an industry-wide shortage of knowledge-

able mechanics and riggers, the future of boatyards look bright.”

The North Point Yacht Sales service department in Annapolis, MD, has had a very busy “off season” according to Caitlin Sims. “We have acquired new shop space at our service center in Annapolis, MD, allowing us to focus on several exciting projects. We have a Blackfin 29 in the shop that has had inboards removed and is being repowered with twin Yamaha 300s, plus new wiring, new electronics, new HVAC, and all structural repairs. We are also busy with another repower project. We have an MJM in the shop and are changing out Mercury 300s for the new V10 Mercury 400s. Electrical, rigging, and fuel systems are being upgraded to support these awesome new engines. All our certified Mercury and Yamaha technicians are busy with commissioning season, and we are very excited to get our clients back on the water!”

Brittney Parrish from Higgins Yacht Yard and Marina in St. Michaels, MD, checks in. “We kicked off the first day of spring the right way—with our first launch of the season. With temperatures starting to warm up, everyone is eager to get back in the water. Going into April, we have a heavy launch schedule filling up our calendar. Need some work done on your boat to get it ready for the season? We’ve got it covered. Even if you’re not stored with us this winter, we can perform a variety of services this spring, including bottom painting,

washing, waxing, detailing, brightwork, sail installation, and more. Planning to commission your boat yourself this spring? Be sure to check over everything thoroughly to ensure a fun and safe time out on the water.”

“The Diversified Marine Services’ restoration team is currently working on an extensive deck restoration job on Spec Ops, a 48-foot

Fountain powerboat,” reports Vaughn Scott. “The job is currently in process, but the team has thus far prepped the boat, sanded down the preexisting gelcoat, and removed the old non-skid on the deck. They mapped out the deck, templated for cloth fiberglass, and are currently in the process of laminating the fiberglass cloth with epoxy resin to the areas with crazed and cracked gel-

coat. The next steps will include applying multiple coats of epoxy followed by prepping primer, touching up fairing, and repeating this process. The final steps will include applying four coats of Awlgrip topcoat to all the smooth areas and applying four coats of the GripTex non-skid pattern. We look forward to the final product and will be sure to share photos once finished!”

Vaughn Scott also sent us this report. “The Bay Shore Marine engine team in Annapolis, MD, completed a full rebuild on a Yanmar 4JH3 over the winter. The owner is an avid boater who cruises his 54-foot Oyster up and down the East Coast, and even further. The Yanmar 4JH3-HTE is original to the boat and had over 6300 hours on it at the time of haul-out. The captain

of this vessel regularly completed all maintenance and preventative maintenance on this engine, leaving it in great condition. Over the winter, the Bay Shore team stripped the engine down to its block and did a complete overhaul. Because of the amazing upkeep performed by the captain/owner, there were no major issues internally in the engine. Bay Shore was able to rebuild

the engine and have it reinstalled in the boat over the winter. The customer is currently awaiting some bottom work to be completed before the boat can be launched and sea trialed this spring.”

Boosting CCA-VA

The Coastal Conservation Association of Virginia (CCA VA) has been on the move lately, and now has a new website at ccavirginia.org. They’ve also started up a new Facebook page and Instagram account. CCA VA has become more and more active in recent years, and now’s the time for anglers who care about the Chesapeake Bay and Virginia fisheries to join in the never-ending quest for better fisheries management, water quality, and habitat issues. Go to the website, click on the volunteer tab, and get involved today!

invasive Behavior

The Interfaith Partners for the Chesapeake is out to help anglers boost their catch and help rid the Chesapeake of invasive species at the very same time, with a new Fishing for Finned Invaders virtual event via Zoom on May 18 at 7 p.m. Sponsored in part by FishTalk Magazine, contributor and snakehead fishing sharpie Eric Packard will be presenting along with Dr. Noah Bressman, an avid angler and fish researcher from Salisbury University. Anglers tuning in will learn about invasives including snakeheads and blue catfish and how to catch more of them, from both an angling and scientifical point of view. The event is free (Free snakehead intel! Free blue cat intel!). Visit interfaithchesapeake.org/events to sign up or learn more.

Delighted in Delaware

Delaware saw no fewer than six (six!) records set in 2022, and all now confirmed. They include a sevenpound, 10-ounce pickerel caught by William Mack; a 21-pound, seven-ounce tautog reeled in by Brent Wiest; a 26-pound, 11-ounce false albacore captured by Mike Spayd; an 89-pound, three-ounce cobia battled by Scott Brooks; a 25-pound, eight-ounce blueline tilefish cranked up by Dain Hursh; and a 48-pound, three-ounce blue catfish bested by James Lord. Whew, what a year for the record books!

Meanwhile in MD

CCA Maryland deployed around 175 oyster reef balls on Noah’s Reef near Dobbins Island in the Magothy River this spring, along with the help of the Magothy River Association. These balls were built by students participating in the Living Reef Action Campaign, and you can bet they’ll become fishing hotspots attracting rockfish, perch, and more. The three-dimensional structure provided by reef balls has been shown to help restore marine habitat, improve water quality, and benefit recreational fishing. For more intel on reef ball locations in the river see “Magothy River Reefs” at FishTakMag.com.

FishTalk Magazine won big in the 2022 Boating Writers International Writing Contest, taking home three awards at the 2023 Miami International Boat Show. The article Thermal Thunderdome won first place for Product Reviews, and the accompanying video won third place in the video category. Notes from the Cockpit took third in the columns category. The annual contest rewards excellence in marine journalism in 15 categories and is judged by a panel of writers in the marine field. You can read the winning stories at FishTalkMag.com and see the video on FishTalk’s YouTube channel.

Reporting Rescinded

Anglers catching cobia in Virginia waters will no longer be subject to mandatory catch reporting and permitting. The Marine Resources Commission voted unanimously to end the program and the associated recreational permit for the 2023 season and moving forward. All other cobia regs remain the same (the season is June 15 to September 15 with one fish per person and two per boat per day, with only one over 50 inches allowed. Minimum size remains 40 inches and gaffing is prohibited). However, the Commission is encouraging voluntary reporting, and especially release data via the Virginia Saltwater Journal system, to help with stock assessment.

Sludging Away Your Stripers

As water quality woes continue chipping away at the ability of our fisheries to recover and thrive, the Chesapeake watershed received a wonderful donation of over 30,000 gallons of chicken rendering waste sludge rich in pollutants including nitrogen and phosphorous this spring. The spill from a three-million-gallon tank (reportedly filled to the brim) in Wicomico County near the Nanticoke watershed occurred when a pipe failed.

A new administration recently took the reins in Maryland and there are some positive signs they support the Bay (for real!), so this might be a good time for Maryland residents to let the powers that be know that they want the Bay’s health prioritized. The Maryland Department of Agriculture administers nutrient management plans under which nitrogen and phosphorous fall, and the Department of the Environment has been tasked with investigating this specific event. Emails with your (polite, reasoned) thoughts could be sent to the new Governor, Wes Moore, via the maryland.gov Contact the Governor page; Serena McIlwain, the Secretary of the Department of Environment, at mde.secretary@ maryland.gov; and Secretary of the Department of Agriculture, Kevin Atticks, at kevin.atticks@ maryland.gov.

Winter Pickerel Wrap

The 2022-2023 CCA Winter Pickerel Championship is a wrap, and after 96 anglers submitted over 600 catches, the results are in. Herb Floyd caught the longest fish, a 28.25-inch monster. Raymond Vrablic III crushed it in the Under Armor three-fish stringer division, accumulating 82 inches of green torpedoes. But that’s not all—he also had the biggest tidal pickerel, the longest bass, and won the Anglers/Daiwa Calcutta. Meanwhile, son Talan Vrablic caught the biggest youth pickerel with a 26.5-incher. WTG, Vrablics! Second place stringer and biggest flycaught pickerel went to Shawn Kimbro, Bradley Smith had biggest crappie, Ryan Altenburg topped the yellow perch charts, Noah Bressman won biggest kayak fish, and Amy Fisher was the top lady angler. Congrats to all!

Fish at Smith

The second annual Smith Island Fishing Tournament is set for Friday, May 19 through Sunday, May 21. Run via the iAngler app, the tournament benefits the Smith Island Cultural Center. The goal is to catch a Smith Island Slam: a redfish, a rockfish, and a speckled sea trout. The longest aggregate of all three wins, and there are Calcutta for the longest red, rock, trout, black drum, and a “wild card” fish. The top three winners will gain free entry in this fall’s Tangier Classic. There will also be a Youth Grand Prize sponsored by Sea Hawk Sports Center for kids 16 and under. Fishing Shoreline Structure

When I ran charters from Virginia Beach, I had excellent fishing for my parties that could cast plugs and bucktails to the rock islands of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. When I had parties that couldn’t cast at all, we trolled or bottom fished.

Casting to the rock islands is the same as casting to any hard structure where the water falls off and the rocks attract bait. The fish will be lurking near the structure waiting for the bait to venture away from the rocks and when it does, they attack with a vengeance.

The most exciting lures to use for this fishery are surface plugs. The fish, usually blues or rockfish, crash these artificials causing explosions on the surface that

will get your heart beating faster. When blues are the target, we used homemade plugs that we cut from dowls, drilled through, and rigged with wire and treble hooks. In hindsight, I believe we could have used single hooks with equal success.

Red and white or black-backed Rebel Wind-Cheaters worked when the fish were not taking surface lures. I had one red and white Wind-Cheater that had caught so many fish it looked like it had been run over by a big truck. The paint was all worn off and the hooks were bent, but somehow it kept on working. Then, a bluefish finally bit it off. A few minutes later the lure floated to the surface. I ran over and picked it up. I decided to finally retire that Wind-Cheater to a place of honor.

There was one thing I learned to do soon after I began to charter. I crushed the barbs on all my treble hooks. I didn’t lose many fish, and it made it much easier to remove the hooks from the fish, from my customers, and from the captain.

The one thing you must learn to do when fishing shoreline structure is to place the lure as close to the edge of the structure as possible. It is better to over shoot a little bit if you can drag the lure back in the water without getting snagged, than to be a foot off the edge.

When you make the cast, let the lure lie still for a moment or two before beginning the retrieve. If using a surface lure, twitch the rod tip as you retrieve the lure and then pause for a second or two before starting the retrieve again. Work the lure all the way to the boat and give it a final pop or two right alongside before lifting it aboard. You may be surprised how many fish will follow a surface lure right to the boat before striking.

Plugs, like a Wind-Cheater, work best with a steady retrieve. Here too you want to drop the plug as close to the shoreline as possible. Let it rest for a few seconds before the retrieve and make a few swirls at the boat before lifting the plug aboard.

I rig both surface and swimming plugs with about 18 inches of 30- or 40-pound Fluorocarbon leader. This protects the running line from the abrasion of the rocks and the fish’s teeth. It also gives me something solid that I can grab to lift the fish aboard the boat.

You must be onsite early to catch fish off rocks or along a shoreline. The best bite will be from first light until sunrise. Once the sun hits the water, the bite is usually over. It may last longer on overcast days.

Working bridge pilings is similar to fishing the shoreline. You must get your bucktail as close as possible to the piling on the up-tide side of the bridge. The captain must put the boat so the anglers on the stern can make the casts and the bucktails have to be heavy enough to find the bottom as they sink past the pilings.

Good luck!

Charters, Guides, and Headboats

One of the most difficult ways to learn how to fish the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean is trial and error. Then there’s the boat issue; we don’t all have one. Luckily, the Bay is full of knowledgeable guides and charter captains ready to show you the ropes. Below you will find a directory of professional guides, charter boats, and head boats to get you started on your quest for the perfect fish. Whether you like to fly fish, troll, or bottom fish, there’s likely a local expert who can lend a hand.

The Bluegill Small Fish, Big Fun on the Fly

Small and feisty, bluegills get little respect from hardcore anglers. They’re by-catches for many seeking their next five-pound bass. Or they’re a target fish for your grandchildren who are dangling garden worms under a bobber as you introduce them to fishing. In some places they’ve become a nuisance. Sent to Japan as a gift from the U.S. in the 1960s, they have overpopulated freshwaters and been designated an invasive species—the Japanese version of a snakehead. But warmwater fly anglers know better. We relish the opportunity to catch these aggressive, colorful sunfish on both topwater and subsurface flies. We know that a spring outing on a pond or tidal creek can yield nonstop bluegill action on our three-, four-, and five-weight fly rods. Plus, an eight to nine-inch bluegill can put quite a bend in our rods. They fight far above their weight.

Bluegill catches on the fly increase when water temperatures reach 60 to 65 degrees—magic water temperature for bluegill action. Central Maryland waters typically reach that temperature in late April. Peak bluegill spawning

will occur through late May, and in some local waters, especially Eastern Shore ponds, bluegills reproduce the entire summer. At those times, the males, awash in their most regal colors of orange, purple, blue, and black, will head to shallow water only several feet deep where they will excavate a small crater on sand or gravel bottoms. That location becomes their domicile, their honeymoon suite, and eventually their nursery.

Female bluegills are attracted to the largest and most colorful males who steadfastly guard their saucer-shaped homes. They enter his home willingly, nuptials ensue, and then the male chases the female away. Yes, the male bluegill is a single parent. He protects the nest and eggs as they hatch which can take up to a week. He continues to guard the nest until the babies are big enough to swim away. That can be another 10 days.

However, not all male bluegills are as noble as the nest-builders I mentioned above. Smaller and younger males do not build nests. They wait nearby and crash the honeymoon suite of a nest builder! That means a single bluegill nest may contain eggs fertilized by two or more males. Some of the nest-building males will actually remove the eggs fertilized by the cad male visitor. Others do not mind sharing their genetics with smaller males. After laying eggs and being chased from the scene, the female bluegill is not finished with

her spawn. She looks for another suitable male. She will visit multiple nests during the spawning season, and she may lay up to 80,000 eggs during the year.

Given such prolific spawning, it is easy to see how bluegill populations can overwhelm a pond without sufficient predation. They can pose a problem for fisheries managers trying to maintain a healthy balance among various species in a body of water. On the other hand, they are critical links in the food chain. Delaware, for example, will stock immature three-inch bluegills into their ponds to create forage for bass.

So, why are bluegills good fly rod targets once water temperatures reach 60 degrees? The answer is simple. Their overwhelming desire to procreate brings them to our reach. Even though bluegills thrive in northern waters, they are not active when water temperatures drop. As summer ends and water cools in the fall, they depart from the shallows. They descend to deeper waters where their metabolisms slow significantly. They do not eat much. They hover together in schools throughout the winter. But in spring and summer, warming waters and longer daylight hours flip their metabolic switches into active mode. The males stake out territories and build nests. The females roam these nests and they do so throughout the summer. All this requires energy and that means bluegills are hungry.

Added to their insatiable hunger is the fact that male bluegills are vigilantly guarding their nests from predators—especially the threats we pose with our fly rods. Our small foam spiders, poppers, and wooly buggers are invasive in their eyes and must be removed. Males will chase, slap their tails at, or bite any foreign object near their nests.

Hence, spring and summer bluegills are great practice for beginning fly an-

glers learning how to cast, retrieve their flies, and set the hook. The first catch on a fly rod for many anglers was a bluegill. And many fly anglers, even after they have mastered trout and other freshwater and tidal fish species on the fly, return to bluegills as a warm water pursuit.

Fly casting for bluegills is terrific fun from shore or from a kayak or canoe. A kayak or canoe will provide access to more water than shore angling. The shallow draft of such vessels allows anglers to quietly approach the common areas where bluegills reside in spring through summer with no wake to disturb them. Again, flyrods in the three-, four-, or five-weight range with a floating line and an eight to nine-foot tapered monofilament leader are ideal in chasing these rambunctious fish. Then it is a just a matter of presenting the fly to them.

A bluegill is not a picky eater. There is no need to “match the hatch” of emerging insects as a trout angler must do. A bluegill will succumb to any reasonable representation of a spider or water beetle or even a small frog. Flies in hook sizes six to 10 made of foam in a multitude of colors that float on the water’s surface serve this purpose every well.

Bluegills will also hit subsurface flies that imitate minnows or other aquatic lifeforms. Flies of this type sink slowly into the feeding zone of bluegills. Again, small hooks in sizes six to 10 are best. Wooly buggers are a classic fly for bluegills. They may represent a leech, caterpillar, or even small crayfish to a bluegill. In fact, any small sinking buggy

looking fly will produce a good session of bluegill action.

The best approach is to cast the fly to a shallow shaded shoreline area, two to four feet deep, and to let it sit momentarily without moving it. For surface flies, a curious bluegill may come up to inspect the intruder. Often, they will study the fly before they decide to attack it. They may look at it for five or 10 seconds. If your patience holds that long, they will likely strike your offering. But if you want to encourage a bite, just twitch the fly slightly, not hard. After that subtle movement, the indecisive bluegill will odds-on engulf the fly. The same process works for subsurface flies. Let them sink slowly before retrieving them. And then, as they near the bottom, twitch them slightly. A bluegill

will not chase a fly far. They need to see it, inspect it, and make a deliberate decision to strike. Slow, patient fly retrievals by the fly angler will be rewarded.

Avid Maryland flyrodders know that a late spring or summer session on quiet waters will produce nonstop action from bluegills. They appreciate everything these fish offer anglers from their willingness to bite a variety of flies, their big fight in a small package, and their beautiful colors. In addition, bluegills are ubiquitous. They populate small ponds, large impoundments, and the upper reaches of tidal creeks. Indeed, these energetic fish are found in waters only minutes away from most Marylanders. Fly anglers in particular hold them in very high esteem—an honor these little fish well deserve. #

Bait – Real or Artificial?

For many years we only had one choice when it came to bait. We had to use the real thing. Every fishing trip began with a stop at the bait shop and a purchase of bloodworms, squid, mullet, peeler crab, live minnows, or frozen spearing.

In today’s world we can add a variety of artificial baits from Fishbites and Gulp!. While I still use live minnows and fresh mullet, I have not bought any bloodworms for several years. Fishbites bloodworms not only work well, they cost a good deal less than the real thing and when the day is over, I can close up the package and any leftover bait will be ready to go on my next trip. Try that with real bloodworms.

My most successful flounder setup has been a green half-ounce roundhead bucktail with a Gulp! crawfish on the hook. I use this setup in the Lewes and Rehoboth Canal where the water

is shallow. In deep water, I use a threeor four-ounce bucktail with a Fishbites Fight Club five-inch Dirty Boxer Curly Tail.

So, when do I use bait? Well, nothing beats a peeler crab when fishing for red or black drum. Usually, I cut a whole crab in half and slide that half on a circle hook. The hook will be tied to about six or eight inches of 80 pounds of monofilament leader that is then tied to a large black swivel. The swivel is connected to the shock leader after that line is run through the fish finder so the drum may run off with the crab before the angler engages the drag and sets the hook.

When flounder fishing in shallow water, I will always run

a minnow, without any weight, off the stern. I caught my personal best flounder, an eight-pounder, doing that.

Recently we have had dolphin on the reef sites off the Delaware coast. I used the unweighted minnow trick on them and it worked just as well, producing fish to 15 pounds.

40 Under 40

Now in its seventh year, Boating Industry’s annual recognition program of strong young leaders continues to put a spotlight on a unique group of industry trailblazers. Selected from hundreds of nominations from across the industry, these young leaders were chosen based on their multitude of accomplishments and strengths, as well as their passion for the recreational boating industry and their promise to bring their industry into the future. Here at PropTalk, we wanted to offer congratulations to all those selected, but especially to our advertisers who were recognized.

When asked about recent accomplishments, Jason Baumgartner, operations manager at Riverside Marine, and also the vice president of the Marine Trades Association of Baltimore County (MTABC), says he is most proud of spearheading a new winter boat show (The Chesapeake Bay Boat Show in Timonium, MD). He says, “I was on the operating committee along with the duty of show coordinator where I handled logistics of the show move in and move out. We are coming off our second year with the show with resounding success. In our second year the boat show was 100 percent rented. The show included over 30 dealers and 80 booth vendors. The success of the show allows the MTABC to give back to our local boating community.” Regarding careers in the marine industry, he says: “If you are passionate about the water and the lifestyle associated with it, you can find a rewarding career in almost any type of job in the marine industry… You couldn’t ask for a better opportunity to find a career you enjoy in a field you are passionate about!” riversideboats.com

Josh McLean, president of David Walters Yachts, was drawn to the marine industry following his eightyear service flying in the U.S. Air Force. He grew up sailing the Great Lakes as a kid growing up in Michigan. He says, “I was looking for a career path that would enable me to tie together my leadership skills and an aspect of my life that I’ve always been passionate about—boating. At the same time, I wanted a fun and rewarding career with new challenges and people as enthusiastic and driven as I am.” He adds: “The most rewarding aspect of a career in the marine industry is that we are here to deliver the dreams and desires of those who share our passion. And when you’re excited about what you do each day, and your customers can sense your enthusiasm, it makes everything much more rewarding. Walking into our waterfront office every morning and feeling the energy around the office, hearing the halyards on the masts through the marina, watching the boats coming and going, and seeing smiles all around reminds me that this ‘work’ is a lot of fun. There are few careers where your passion can be your profession, as in the marine industry.” davidwaltersyachts.com

Chesapeake Perspective

The Coastal Conservation Association and partners announce a second season of “Chesapeake Perspective:” three, live-streamed roundtable events featuring leading experts from the Chesapeake and Atlantic region who will engage in entertaining and thoughtprovoking conversations designed to spark innovative and real solutions to some of the most pressing issues confronting Chesapeake recreational anglers today, tomorrow, and in the years to come. Chesapeake Perspective is presented in partnership by the Coastal Conservation Association, American Sportfishing Association, BoatUS, Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation, Yamaha Rightwaters, Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership, and the Marine Trades Association of Maryland. The moderator is Lenny Rudow, FishTalk magazine’s Angler-in-Chief. The events take place the third Thursday in April, June, and September from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Topics include: April 20 – Opportunities and Impacts of Invasive Fish, June 15 – Expanding Angler Access, and September 21 – Habitat Preservation and Restoration. CCA Maryland executive director David Sikorski issued the following statement: “Now more than ever, it’s crucial that we implement effective solutions that begin to address some of the most pressing issues confronting Chesapeake recreational anglers. Our Chesapeake Perspective series is a step forward in that effort…” Join the conversation during the live streaming. Register today for free at fishtalkmag.com/chesapeake-perspective

RBFF Grants

Through its State R3 Program Grants, the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation (RBFF) has awarded funds to 10 programs in nine states. Now in its ninth year, the State R3 Program Grants’ goal is to support state recruitment, retention, and reactivation (R3) initiatives to increase fishing and boating participation. RBFF is providing approximately $207,000 in grants this year with nine state agencies contributing an additional $232,000 in project funds and in-kind support. The programs must focus on one of three areas: communicate the relevance of fishing and/or boating to urban, multicultural audiences to increase participation; implement angler and/or boater customer engagement strategies to retain and/or reactivate anglers and boaters to increase participation; and enhance the capability of agencies to develop and implement effective angler and/or boater recruitment, retention and reactivation efforts. The State R3 Program Grants fund sustainable and replicable angler and boater R3 initiatives and plans that focus on increasing fishing license sales and boat registrations to help increase fishing and boating participation. Proposals are reviewed and selected by RBFF staff and a Proposal Review Working Group made up of industry, federal agency, and NGO representatives. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources was one of the 2023 grantees for its Welcome to Boating and Fishing! program. takemefishing.org
