FIRST WORDS
APRIL 2020
As a magazine dedicated to the production industry, it is heartbreaking to see the impact of the COVID-19 virus on businesses and the people involved. The situation is unprecedented and has affected the events industry globally. I had the pleasure of listening in to the Adam Hall hosted “We Will Get Through This Together” live stream. It was brought up that “No other industry has felt the effects of the coronavirus crisis earlier than the event industry.” No events, no concerts, no conferences, no trade fairs – the event industry has been globally affected by the effects of the coronavirus crisis on a wide-ranging scale. Event technology service providers, in particular, have had sales losses of 100%. It is hard to keep your head up under these circumstances, but everyone involved in the industry needs to persevere.

horizontal coverage. Paired with a JBL VTX B18 18-inch subwoofer, the system delivered powerful bass response with improved linearity and increased sensitivity. To power the system, Wu Shen selected a Crown VRack 4x3500HD amplifier rack, which features three Crown 4x3500HD amplifiers and a built-in distribution system for quick and easy set up. “We required a sound system that catered to three critical criteria,” said Edison, Sound Engineer, Karnaval SCTV, “Firstly, the systems had to be powerful to deliver consistent coverage for every member of the audience. Secondly, the systems had to be dynamic to meet a variety of performance requirements. Finally, the systems had to be dependable, due to the caliber of the event. We are very satisfied with the solutions provided by The Voices; they certainly meet all of our expectations.”
The Voices recently equipped the Karnaval SCTV stage with a JBL by HARMAN audio system to deliver powerful, dynamic sound with balanced coverage for a variety of musical acts. Karnaval SCTV is a popular variety show on Surya Citra Televisi (SCTV) that is broadcast live from several major cities throughout Indonesia each month. Karnaval SCTV features a star-studded cast of celebrity guest appearances as well as live musical performances, stunning attractions and more. To commemorate the 18th anniversary of the city of Lubuklinggau, Karnaval SCTV broadcasted live from Silampari Sports Park, welcoming a host of celebrities including musicians, television personalities and soap opera stars to the stage. To ensure world-class sound for the 500-person crowd, Karnaval SCTV hired AV integrators The Voices to deploy a state-of-the-art HARMAN audio system with JBL VTX Series loudspeakers. “The client required a powerful sound system that could reach every member of the audience,” said Liauw Wu Shen, Owner, The Voices. “The system had to be dynamic and adaptable to deliver spectacular performance for a variety of music genres and performances. The event commemorated the 18th anniversary of Lubuklinggau city and hosted a variety of eminent celebrities, so reliability was extremely important. After considering these factors, we decided that the versatile JBL VTX series systems would be best suited for the project at Karnaval SCTV.” The Voices deployed JBL VTX A8 line array loudspeakers to deliver clear, detailed sound for a variety of musical performances. Singapore’s W!ld Rice Theatre Company Future Ready with Clear-Com
Any theatre company that stages productions as diverse as W!ld Rice – original works, interpretations of classics, charitable and corporate events – needs to be ready for anything. W!ld Rice recently established a new performing arts complex with an environment fit for performance experimentation and outfitted with their desired ClearCom communications system, installed throughout the venue helps technical teams keep the creativity flowing smoothly. After drawing more than one million people to its performances which were previously held in rented spaces since its founding in 2000, W!ld Rice decided it was time for a permanent home. The company’s spacious facility was recently completed and is located in the Funan Mall within the heart of Singapore’s Civic and Cultural district. The new space features over 18,000 square feet of performance space and a 380-seat theatre, the first dedicated performance venue in Singapore to be fully designed, managed and programmed by a theatre company. Once they had the resources to handle a more rigorous schedule of productions and events of all sizes, the W!ld Rice team was able to act on their plan for an enhanced communications for production crews. Key requirements were a two-channel system at the stage manager’s desk and the ability to expand seamlessly to keep pace with future growth. The new system, introduced by consultant, Radian Acoustics, includes a Clear-Com HelixNet All-Digital Networked Partyline Intercom System combined with the FreeSpeak II Wireless and Encore Analog Partyline Intercom Systems. These technologies are making crew communications during shows and rehearsals more efficient and

streamlined, while allowing an easy and cost-effective expansion to more channels of digital and wireless system capabilities in the future. “We’ve been able to secure a Clear-Com solution suited to our needs and unique challenges,” said W!ld Rice Technical Director, David Sagaya. “FreeSpeak II provides the performance and reliability we require for our caliber of productions, and HelixNet is easily scalable to whatever communications need arises.” Clear-Com’s IP-based technologies are well-suited to the demands of modern theatrical environments, especially as more shows incorporate elaborate production requirements. “The combination of HelixNet and FreeSpeak II was a great solution for this space,” remarked Consultant Tan Suan Wee of Radian Acoustics. “The robustness, audio quality and scalability of the system means that the theatre will enjoy seamless usage for years to come.” Clear-Com systems are widely used throughout many parts of the AsiaPacific region and are dominant in the Singapore market where they are used in a range of commercial and theatrical applications. FreeSpeak II continues to be the wireless intercom system of choice for the majority of Singaporean rental companies working with theatrical venues, live event and broadcast production companies, due to its reliability, clarity, IP capability and dual support for 1.9GHz and 2.4GHz bandwidths.

SLS Productions Invests in DiGiCo SD5 and SD10
SLS’s SD5 at the Saudi International Golf Tournament Concert 2020 Since 1997, Dubai-based SLS Productions has been providing complete event solutions for some of the most spectacular productions in the Middle East. The company prides itself on providing both a first-class service and top of the line equipment. With SD12s already a proven staple of its audio inventory, it recently decided to expand its DiGiCo stock by investing in the company’s SD5 and SD10 consoles, purchased through DiGiCo’s UAE distributor, GSL Professional. “We are extremely happy with our existing stock of SD12 consoles, but we decided to invest on the SD5 and SD10 for their I/O expandability,” explains SLS’s Martin Luiz. “There has always been a demand for the SD5 and SD10, but we had to outsource every time we needed one. We are catering for larger gigs now, as well as experiencing greater demand on the international concert circuit, especially in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), and the majority of our international artists demand DiGiCo as their first preference. Expanding our stock makes perfect business sense, particularly in the light of a gig we did recently at the King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC) in Jeddah.” With economics as well as quality always a consideration, return on investment is a priority for SLS. Whilst Luiz knows this always takes time, he says the company likes the reassurance of having such riderfriendly products in stock and readily available and knows his faith in DiGiCo will be quickly rewarded. “The investment gives us more confidence in providing our clients with a reliable service,” he asserts. “DiGiCo has always been the most ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com
preferred console in the market, and now that we are being awarded more concerts in KSA, it didn’t take too much thought to decide which desks to go for.” SLS was the recently appointed as event production supplier for a three-day music concert that was part of the Saudi International Golf Tournament in KSA this February. The concerts featured international artists such as Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike, Marco Carola, Bryan Adams, DJ Zedd and Luis Fonsi, where the SD5 and SD10 were deployed for FOH and monitors respectively. “The concerts were a great success and the SD5 and SD10 performed impeccably,” says Luiz. “Our experience with GSL has also been exemplary. We have more than 15 years of great business relationship with them. The team is always ready with technical support and to advise us on all their reputed brands. We always get a prompt response from the team if we have any lack of knowledge about using the DiGiCo consoles. Mr. Burak is our main point of contact and our business relationship with him always makes GSL our first preference for any new audio purchases and technical advice. “We are extremely happy to have the DiGiCo family in our inventory and GSL as our business partner. We continue looking forward to a fruitful business relationship with both GSL and DiGiCo.” digico.biz

SE Audiotechnik Discretely Delivers for Dream Back to the Tang Dynasty
SE Audiotechnik’s compact yet powerful M-F3A PRO has been key to the success of an immersive production of Dream Back to the Tang Dynasty. Taking place at the Fengming theatre, sound designer Tian Chensheng wanted to create an immersive audio environment for the large-scale fantasy production but without having the technology on show. Dream Back to the Tang Dynasty incorporates poetry, musical drama and traditional song and dance in a production that completely immerses its audience in the story. The theatre itself has been designed to become integrated into the 180-degree video wall that creates much of the scenery, but a 360-degree immersive audio solution was required to complete the audience experience. Tian explored the structural characteristics and the sound field in the theatre and decided that it would be possible to adopt an immersive solution. However, the 30-year industry veteran did not want to break the immersive environment by having large amounts of technology on show. “In the selection of speakers, on the one hand we need to meet the sound effect requirements, but on the other hand, we have to hide the installation,” he explains. “However, these two aspects are against each other. Hiding requires the box to be small, but the small size will reduce the sound pressure and the sound quality.” To overcome this challenge Tian and the technical team researched various potential solutions before choosing the M-F3A PRO from German pro audio manufacturer, SE Audiotechnik. The small size

and high SPL of this ultra-compact 2-way active line array element with a unique hornless design was the perfect choice for the complex environment within the theatre. Weighing in at just 8.3kg, the 210 x 317 x 369 mm enclosure houses eight high-efficiency 2.8” neodymium lo/mid-frequency drivers and seven 1” direct radiation dome tweeters that could deliver the audio quality that the sound designer was looking for. While with much of the electronics inside the cabinet, such as a 600W Class-D amplifier and plug and play DSP, it was possible to conceal a relatively large system throughout the venue. Integrating the technical lighting, video and audio solutions into the overall stage design proved to be a challenge for the team behind the production. But careful planning led by the director ultimately ensured success. Inside the theatre almost 300 loudspeakers have been concealed in various staging and structural elements around the venue to create the immersive sound system, with results that have been celebrated by every audience. se-audiotechnik.de/

Hippotizer Makes Light Work of Cultural Storytelling copyright Clare Toia-Bailet
For the welcome event of the annual Conventions & Incentives New Zealand (CINZ) conference, local visual production specialist TomTom Productions provided a cultural and historical storytelling experience with the help of Hippotizer Media Servers. The presentation, highlighting the lesser known cultural history of Queenstown and the story of Lake Wakatipu, used rich graphic content and soundscapes to relate the captivating story, which included traditional Maori legends of the origins of the lake and landscape. TomTom’s Hamish Edh and his team collaborated with representatives from Destination Queenstown and leading New Zealand event design agency, Watson & Wyatt Events, to deliver the story content for the opening session.
TomTom specified two Hippotizer Karst Media Servers, one as the main playback unit, with the second as backup. The main Karst fed the visual content to a high-res (2.6mm pixel pitch) DB Series LED screen from VuePix which backed the conference stage. The content had been used on a previous event where it was played to a 6:1 ratio screen: for the CINZ show, however, the screen ratio was limited to 4:1, so Edh adapted the content to fit using Hippotizer’s Aspect Mode. “We used the Hippotizer Karst as a media manager to store the content and to manage the playback and mapping,” explains Edh. “We triggered the clips externally from a lighting console, which also triggered the audio and lighting playback, keeping everything sync’d.” He adds, “Hippotizer’s lighting console integration is awesome – far better than any of the other media servers we have in our stock. Hippo is always our go-to for playback when we’re integrating with lighting solutions. For us, having a solution that plays nice with lighting console is one of the big selling points for Hippo.”

TDC was commissioned to design, deliver, install and operate a projection spectacular, with a focus on the sandstone pylons of the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge. “It wasn’t just the projection,” says TDC’s Steve Cain, who is head engineer and media server specialist. “We designed everything from the content templates for the animations through the 3D models to the control system.” TDC has worked on the Sydney New Year’s Eve spectacular for a number of years, and Steve was as anxious as the city to put on something bigger and better than ever before. He worked with colleagues Geraldine Shine, director brand strategy and AnthonyPellizzari, technical project manager at TDC from concept to completion. One area of focus was to deliver even more vibrant colours at even higher levels of brightness. To achieve this, he took the unusual step of specifying two different projectors to leverage the unique strengths of each. “I chose Barco UDX 4K32 projectors for their incredible capability to deliver the primary colours -red, green and blue - with stunning contrast and black levels,” he explains. “Then, I overlay blended them with Barco HDF W26K projectors because they deliver amazing punch and really excel in the secondary colours - cyan, magenta and yellow.” The result, according to Steve, was a truly stunning, very impressive representation of the whole colour spectrum, delivered from a network of projection towers . ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com
“It even kept up with the tonnes of pyrotechnics going off around it,” he laughs. No less important in the design of the project was the control system – which needed to be not only incredibly powerful, but also include the flexibility to make on-the-fly changes should the well-laid plans need to change for any reason. Steve chose eight disguise media servers as slave units – a combination of 4x4pros and Gx2s delivering a total of 80 DVI outputs and home to almost 3,000 projection cues. These servers were scattered around the city at either side and end of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and linked back to the event control room on theother side of the city via a sophisticated city-wide ‘dark fibre’ network. The control room housed two additional disguise servers, operating as masters. “As always, it was all about meticulous pre-show preparation and planning,” notes Steve. “For such a high profile event, we had to ensure absolutely nothing could go wrong, so the entire system had extensive fail-safe built into it – even allowing for the highly unlikely failure of the fibre network.” “It’s fair to say that the city of Sydney authorities were delighted with what we achieved,” he concludes. And: it wasn’t just the authorities. TDC’s efforts – along with the fireworks, of course – were greatly appreciated by the million Sydneysiders who turned out to see the city’s most spectacular New Year’s Eve event ever – with a billion and more watching around the world. Martin Audio Announces Two High-Performance Cardioid Subwoofers behind the subwoofer. The recommended iK42 amplifier optimises the DSP parameters for front and rear drivers to maximise the rear rejection—from 21dB at 43Hz to 28dB at 75Hz. This keeps low frequencies away from stages and walls as well as reducing reverberant energy in the room—greatly improving low frequency response accuracy and impact.
Martin Audio has announced the release of two new compact, high performance cardioid subwoofers, the SXCF118 and the SXC115, suitable for both live sound reinforcement and fixed installations. The SXCF118 is a flyable version of the SXC118 released last year and has been purpose designed to accompany the WPS optimised line array system, while the ground stack SXC115 is set to partner WPM. The SXCF118 combines maximum low frequency output with exceptional pattern control. It features an 18” (460mm) forward facing driver and a 14” (356mm) rear facing driver, each driven independently by separate amplifier channels and DSP. Each driver has its own chamber with optimised bass reflex porting. This arrangement produces a cardioid dispersion pattern which maximises the front radiation, while reducing unwanted radiation
In front of the enclosure, the output from the two drivers is additive, giving an extra 2dB of output when compared with a conventional 1 x 18” subwoofer. The enclosure is constructed from tour-grade plywood and finished with a hard-wearing textured polyurea coating. It is equipped with four grab handles, while foam-backed perforated steel grilles protect the front and rear drivers. Integral flying hardware, coupled with the WPSGRIDT touring flying frame, allows the SXHF118 to be incorporated at the top of a WPS array, or flown as a separate array alongside. The SXC115 follows similar principles and contains a 15” (380mm) front facing driver and 12” (300mm) rear facing driver, each driven, again, independently by separate amplifier channels and DSP. Each driver, similarly, has its own chamber with optimised bass reflex porting. In front of the enclosure, the output from the two drivers is additive, giving an extra 1dB of output when compared with a conventional 1 x 15” subwoofer and 21dB at 43Hz of rear rejection. It is the perfect accompaniment to WPM or indeed with a pole mount for Martin Audio point source loudspeakers. www.martin-audio.com
LD Systems: Feel the Bass, Even Without a Subwoofer If you are on the road without a dedicated road crew, you need a true all-round PA system: flexible in use, full-range in sound. The new ICOA series active coaxial PA speakers excels equally in full-range, satellite and monitor applications – thanks to its coaxial design with rotating, BEM-optimised CD horn as well as the DynX DSP presets. This is not least due to the excellent bass reproduction of the hornloaded woofers, making the active ICOA loudspeakers not only an ideal choice for musicians, bands and entertainers, but also for mobile DJs not having a dedicated subwoofer at hand. In addition, each ICOA model can be used both vertically as a satellite and horizontally as a stage monitor. The BT versions enable wireless Bluetooth streaming to play entire songs or backing parts from a smartphone or tablet. Furthermore, the active speakers of the new ICOA series can be carried safely and efficiently via the four aluminum handles with ergonomic, rubber surface.
The ICOA series active coaxial PA speakers comprise a 12’’ and a 15’’ version and are available with extensive, optionally available accessory for installation and transport. www.ld-systems.com

Digital Projection at ISE 2020 Be dynamic and continually changing and not what is expected. The Satellite modular laser system featured at ISE by Digital Projection was really inspiring.
COMMENTARY The light source is separate to the projection head offering some pretty cool installation benefits and low power consumption. We can’t wait to see where this ends up being used for entertainment. Lasers are getting even more creative and the lines of lighting and video design are increasingly becoming united. Pangolin and Kvant showed really interesting potential for signage, architectural and artistic projects at ISE2020. LED and processing is getting more and more interactive enabling the technology to be used in collaborative working environments, command and control centres and for streaming. It can now even replace projection in high-ambient lighting levels for some training and events-based viewing.

e-sports is still taking off but at a distance. Will this growing industry get its moment in the spotlight as the more traditional sports are taken off the television schedule and people are confined to their homes? Well, Flashpoint and League of Legends this year took the decision to move all matches online where teams will play from their homes. Resuming competitions from China’s League of Legends was eventually broadcast online in February. At ISE 2020, Painting with Light created a large e-sports set up for Panasonic combining its IP/IT-centric platform, 8K ROI cameras and 4K laser projectors.

Immersive yourself
Live streaming
The future of social is meaningful and video content dominates. We are seeing a lot of live streaming of concerts in particular.
Behind visual communications, evoking emotions isn’t always easy. We believe that immersive and spatial audio should be the norm on all devices and channels from headphones, stereos and smart speakers to laptops and public spaces. It’s a great tool to help tell stories creatively.
A streaming benefit concert series has been set up to assist affected entertainment industry professionals during the global outbreak of COVID-19, called LIVE from Nowhere.
Avatars are also taking the stage in metaverses as can be seen in D.J Soto ‘s mega church that’s taking off and attracting international crowds.
On 30 and 31 March, Sennheiser’s #dontstopthemusic campaign live streamed concerts via IGTV.

STAR is a national body representing freelancers from the events and entertainment industry. The association aims to elevate standards, champion professional interest, and enable beneficial partnerships. The COVID19 virus has wreaked havoc in the events segment affecting not only the production companies but the vast number of freelancers who ply their trade in this space. Sheldon and his committee members have been engaging the association members as well as government bodies to figure out how to mitigate the situation. The Singapore Government has recently released financial help for the GIG economy players. Though it would never make up for the revenue losses, it is hoped that it will alleviate some of the difficulties faced. ETA has a quick chat with Sheldon regarding the current situation. How have the freelancers been affected? Freelancers have been badly affected. Jobs are down at least 90%. What are some of the measures that STAR has taken to help the freelancers? We are in constant communication with the National Trade Union Congress (NTUC) Freelance and Self-Employed Unit, and the announced measures to provide training allowance to Self-Employed Persons is welcome. The more recent second budget announcement also offers financial help which I believe will relieve to some extent the stress faced by freelancers. What is the key takeaway from this situation for freelancers? Have preparation for a rainy day. Have proper contracting practices so their rights can be protected. This is unprecedented, and the whole events eco-system is affected, but some are better prepared than others.
ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com
Is there any way for companies who use freelancers able to help them at this moment? As I mentioned, this is an eco-system. Everyone is hit hard. Companies should not use this situation to take advantage of the freelancers. Where compensation has been paid, some of that should be passed down to the freelancers as well. As the owner of TPP, how much of the events business has been affected in Singapore in terms of percentage? It is as much as 95%. What stop-gap measures you think the industry needs to take to ride this situation? The factors are external, nothing much the industry can do at the moment. Again what are the key takeaways for the rental & staging companies from this situation? Contingency is important. Are you able to share what is TPP doing to mitigate the situation at the moment? We are talking to the banks to use the Government measures to help us with cash-flow. We are also sending our people for training, and also organising our own product familiarisation open days. Are manufacturers being flexible with regards to equipment purchased? We have appealed, and getting good response so far. Any other comment you would like to add? Importantly, everyone needs to know this is temporary. Think long term, deal with the cash crunch, but also prepare for rebound. This will come back stronger than before.

Hearing , Immersion and VR I had briefly touched upon Immersive technologies last year and because we hear about this each and every day, I want to go back to this for a closer look. This topic has been interesting to me for a long time already and it is my research and development project for 2020. In the course of learning about this, I have to look at everything out there and make some judgement about what makes sense for me and my work and what does not. So let’s get the bad stuff out of the way right in the beginning. I do think that all the immersive solutions which are promoted these days by loudspeaker companies are purely for marketing purposes and for them to sell us more loudspeakers. This makes perfect sense and I don’t blame anyone for this, but the practical relevance for this kind of approach is very limited. This comes back to the content that is being reproduced and also the quality of immersion around the audience. Any traditional concert is working as a frontal presentation and then stereo is as good as anything and from years and years of experience we all know that even stereo can only be done limited, since there is a fairly small sweetspot where stereo can truly be enjoyed. If you learn more about 3D Audio, it becomes clear that the more you raise the resolution of the Immersion system, the smaller the sweetspot gets. This means that you potentially end up with just a few seats with a real decent experience. However this is then not commercially viable, no matter how good it is. That is a challenge and some 15 years back when STARWARS episode 1 was launched (not 4, 5 and 6, but the new trilogy), I was asked if I could design a sound system to do a movie screening in a soccer stadium in Germany. The client wanted to use a 58m wide screen and project the movie in a stadium for a large scale audience, since the launch was such a big thing at the time. However, I had to disappoint them and told them that this is impossible and luckily they did listen to me. Of course you can build a sound system that gets sound to every seat in a stadium, but making this a real surround experience and making it exciting and immersive is just not possible on this scale and with traditional sound reinforcement methods. Can you imagine turning such an opportunity down? In hindsight I must give the customer a lot of credit for listening to the sound designer whom they asked to do the system for them. The challenges for good reproduction makes it extremely desirable for this to be done in binaural technology, since the sweetspot is
small enough and the environment can be controlled when using headphones or in-ears. This gets even more important when you look at who has been driving the development in this area of the pro audio industry. It was the game industry and online entertainment who have invested multiple times the budget that pro audio itself was able to conjure up for this task. Good quality immersion and experience is much more relevant and important in a virtual reality environment than in applications where stereo has served us very well for the past 50 years. Binaural gives us its own set of challenges and they should not be underestimated. The most obvious one is the head tracking and to resolve any head movement properly and adequately for the listener. However there are now more affordable solutions for this, than you might think. All this is very exciting and it is real ground-breaking and new technology and we are learning a huge amount about our own hearing system and how it works and understanding this will lead to more new solutions. So immersive is really just beginning in the pro audio world. I strongly encourage you to learn about this and to get “immersed” in this topic. To be kept updated of new trainings and webinars visit the ETA website on a regular basis. www.e-techasia.com TIPS before you start To enjoy your learning experience here are a few tips. They are not in any particular order: 1. Make sure that you are comfortable – good lighting, privacy if possible, fans or air-conditioning and seats that do not make your bottom sore . Have a bottle of water nearby as well. 2. It is a general rule that you should see your screen directly and not tilted downwards or upwards as that is a sure fire-way of having neck issues. Also reduce the brightness of your laptop to a comfortable level so that you do not get visual fatigue. 3. Ensure that you have the right headset that offers noisecancellation and fits comfortably as you might be doing this for a while. If you do not have one we suggest you approach any of the industry brands for a special discount:)) 4. Set aside time where you feel you are most open to learn. Of course some of the webinars are held at a fixed time but we are sure you will be able to catch it in the archives. 5. It would be best to have your phones and other distractions (TV, radio, email alerts and spouse) off. You need to commit the time!!! 6. Ensure that you have pen and paper to take notes. Use the print screen feature if you need to capture an important point. 7. Space out your timing to learn – do not cramp it all. You are not studying for a Degree.

TiMax Keeps Singapore’s Bicentennial Experience Flowing TiMax is also used as a vital element of the showcontrol system
Ctrl Fre@k’s Jeffrey Yue has drawn upon his considerable and extensive know-how – as well as a fine assemblage of creative AV technology including TiMax SoundHub spatial audio servers - to realise a fiveact multimedia extravaganza within century-old Fort Canning, to commemorate Singapore’s 200-year milestone. From Singapore to Singaporean: The bicentennial experience is a onehour immersive, multi-sensory journey that charts Singapore’s 500-year history prior to the British arrival in 1819 and onwards to the present day. As technical consultant and systems designer for audio, video, lighting and multimedia control aspects of the exhibit, Ctrl Fre@k’s remit was to integrate the work of numerous design agencies and creative consultants into a unified whole using the most sophisticated technologies, with TiMax SoundHub in the frame to facilitate a cohesive audio journey. The temporary exhibit features LED walls, revolving stages, rain shower rooms and actors on travelators, across five separate areas or ‘acts’ serviced by 80 channels of SMPTE timecode-driven audio, served from two TiMax SoundHub frames (32 and 48 channels/tracks respectively) to individual amp racks via redundant primary and secondary Dante networks.
ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com
‘This venue wasn’t built for such an ambitious exhibit,’ Yue points out. ‘Therefore, the acoustics are very poor and we could not apply any treatment in these rooms.’ The role of the TiMax SoundHub was at the very least, two-fold. As well as rendering the multichannel show content stems onto the multispeaker environment and applying the relevant delay, level and EQ profiles for each individual act, TiMax was also integral to the sensitive balancing of the distributed audio system to minimise audio pollution between the rooms. TiMax is also used as a vital element of the showcontrol system. The TimeLine displays events visually in sequences of cues, which could consist of an individual audio clip playback and spatialisation events or composites of multiple audio events. Overlapping multichannel playback, looping, object-based panning and mix automation can be independently time-slipped relative to other cue events, audio clips

and show clocks. Pre-load events are used to ensure multitrack music content plays perfectly in sync with the other lighting, visual and multimedia events. The non-linear, multi-timeline playback environments of the two TiMax SoundHubs respond to MIDI triggers from customised ETC Paradigm Inspire six-button control stations, linked to an architectural control processor in the control room. Jeffrey Yue explains, ‘If one act is running behind schedule, the others behind are delayed, so we created triggers to guide the audiences through and ensure that no one gets left behind.’ Yue explains, ‘We normally apply TiMax in theatrical applications, where it allows us to manage multichannel sound effects, object-based spatial panning and system processing,’ says Yue. ‘The S-Version allows us to trigger events programmed against individual cue timelines’. ‘Ultimately,’ explains Yue, ‘this is more theatrical than theme park. A strictly theme park control system would not have been right for this application.’ www.outboard.co.uk

MLA Adopted On Three Stages At Japan’s New Year Countdown Martin Audio’s award-winning MLA Multicellular Loudspeaker Array plays important role at the Makuhari Messe Convention Center in Chiba
Countdown Japan is one of the biggest new year countdown music festivals in Japan, held over four days at the end of December (and leading up to the final countdown at midnight on December 31st). This major event features between 40-50 Japanese music acts per day. The main stage is the 40,000 capacity Earth Stage, while the other four stages comprise Galaxy Stage, Cosmo Stage, Moon Stage and Astro Arena (some with acts running through until New Year’s Day morning). Furthermore, a shrine is set within the venue, providing a genuine Japanese new year flavour. On the Earth Stage, 19 x Martin Audio MLA and a single MLD Downfill cabinet provided the main arrays on each side of the stage, while six MLA per side provided outfills. Three MLX subwoofers were stacked, and set at 12 positions across the front of the stage. This subwoofer stack was in cardioid setting, including one cabinet in the centre facing backwards. On top of these stacks were placed MLA Compact enclosures for front fills.
In addition to the PA, which completely immersed and engaged the audience, Martin Audio also provided stage monitoring for the benefit of the artists, in the form of XE500 wedges, as well as THV for side monitors. XE500 is a powerful monitor combining high SPL and differential directivity dispersion pattern. Its coaxial differential dispersion

technology combines 15in low section, featuring 3.5in voice coil and 1.4in exit compression driver with 3in titanium diaphragm for the high section. Since a neodymium magnet is used for both sections handling is made easier with the lower weight mass. The XE500’s differential directivity dispersion control is also good for the musicians’ reference sound, having similar SPL and tonality— whether they are playing close to the monitor or straying far from it. Its unique waveguide achieves smaller horn size and pattern controllability down to 500Hz. As for THV, this is an all horn loaded 3-way system, driven bi-amp with passive crossover network inside. The ease of playing onstage is the key to getting a good performance from the artists—and by preparing the best monitor environment for the artists, the crew were able to guarantee this on the Earth Stage. In addition to the Earth Stage, Martin Audio premium systems were also adopted on Galaxy Stage and Astro Arena. At the former, the main array consisted of 13 x MLA and a single MLD Downfill cabinet, while a pair of stacked MLA Compact enclosures were deployed as side fills. A further nine MLX subwoofers per side provided low end extension and W8LM were used for the front fills.
side arrays. Eight MLX subwoofers per side were also deployed along with W8LM once again providing front fills.
Meanwhile, in the Astro Arena, the main array consisted of 10 x MLA and a single MLD Downfill cabinet, while eight MLA Compact provided

AUSTRALIA
Under the Blood Moon with Cold Chisel LD Jeff Pavey puts Robe moving lights at the centre of the ‘big rock look
Photos: Louise stickland In February, before the worldwide lockdown to beat Covid-19 came into force, Robe’s reporting team were in Australia – which had just been engulfed by the worst bushfires for many years - and captured a historic musical moment in time ….. The rain pelted down relentlessly for the final gig of legendary Australian pub-rock phenomenon Cold Chisel’s 2020 tour at Sirromet Winery just outside Brisbane in Queensland. This hugely welcomed metrological miracle capped an emotional evening and helped to finally extinguish most of the remaining uncontained fires raging from Australia’s disastrous 2019-20 ‘bushfire season’, leaving the land a scorched reminder to the need for urgent climate change action! The tour’s lighting was designed by Cold Chisel’s long term LD Jeff Pavey who put Robe moving lights at the centre of the ‘big rock look’ he crafted to perfection for one of Australia’s most iconic and best-loved bands whose prolific career has spanned five decades. Defining the look onstage were 40 x Robe MegaPointes and 11 x BMFL Blades supplied by Gold Coast rental company Creative Productions,
ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com
together with LED wash lights, weatherised beam lights, 2-lite LED blinders and 4-lite tungsten blinders. Pavey has been involved with lighting frontman Jimmy Barnes’ solo performances and various creative projects including Cold Chisel for around 30 years, and he’s every bit as passionate about ‘the show’ now as he was at the start! He’s seen the technology change dramatically over that time … but the principle of providing classic show lighting has remained fundamentally the same … Lots of big bold looks, clear and defined colours, stark and edgy whites, dramatic contrasts and ballsy attitude … to match Barnes’ and Cold Chisel’s incredible energy. All 25 shows on the tour this year were outdoors, with the standard rig designed to fit into a 22-metre-wide, 16-metre-deep deep Clifton Productions’ stage with around 15 metres of headroom. Four straight trusses in the roof were flown at slightly different heights complemented by eight side trusses – four per side – that gave excellent cross stage lighting positions and coverage for solos.

“Most of the things I do are pretty straightforward,” quips Pavey with reference to his minimal no-nonsense style. For him, it’s a critical thing to get a good balance of lights that can be grouped and unfolded in layers to present the bigger picture. A large 12 metre wide by 6 metre high LED screen dominated the upstage area – also supplied by Creative Productions – and this was one of the reasons that Pavey chose MegaPointes for their main effects fixtures – for their power, punch and ability to slice through the LED, plus the near-infinite variety of looks that can be created. Six of the BMFL WashBeams were on the front truss and linked into two remote follow spot control systems, with three on the upstage truss linked into a third remote spotting system. The other two fixtures were on the mid truss and concentrated on key-lighting the drum and keyboard riser positions. The MegaPointes were distributed on all overhead and side trusses and they were the heart of the rig, helping to create all those epic rock looks.
Pavey achieved this goal combining his vast experience as an LD and huge enthusiasm for the music … a loud mix of defiance, the gritty side of life and superlative rock ‘n’ roll.
“MegaPointes are my favourite moving light of the last decade,” Pavey declares. “They are multi-purpose fixtures that actually do work properly in more than one mode!”
Cold Chisel shows have not always featured video prominently, but used judiciously and intelligently on this tour, it helped ensure the focus remained on the band and the music at all times, with a healthy visual harmony and rhythm between it and the lighting.
While brightness is a major asset, he embraces all the other MegaPointe features throughout the show ... and the expedient size means he can pack a few more on the truck when possible! Creative Productions currently owns 48 x MegaPointes which are out on shows and events most of the time, and they are about to increase the stock again. The band like those classic big AC / DC and Queen power looks form the 1980s with gazillions of PAR cans … so his objective on this tour was to recreate the spirit and scale of this aesthetic in a modern context … and with considerably fewer lights, all of which had to fit into a single truck!
Custom playback content was created by Rachael Johnson and Dave Hendy’s raw and masterful camera mix hit the Cold Chisel spot! Pavey programmed and operated the lights using his trusty Hog 4 console and was joined on the road by a “fantastic” Creative Productions crew of Jeremy Dehn, John Penridge and Declan Woods.
