“We believe immersive audio is going to become mainstream soon. If I look at my children, they think every screen is a touch screen, because that is how the world looks to them as they have been growing up. They are also growing up in a world with YouTube, gaming and streaming all taking place in a multi-dimensional format. By the time they are going to concerts, they will expect immersive audio. We believe the question is not IF it will come, but rather WHEN and HOW.”

Creative Invests in More Robe Fixtures

Dave Jackson Creative Productions, one of Australia’s leading lighting and video rental companies, has just moved into a brand-new purpose built 3000 square metre HQ, warehouse and office space in Molendinar on Australia’s Gold Coast … part of an impressive growth trajectory that started when Dave Jackson founded the company in 2012. They have also just purchased 50 x Robe MegaPointes to add to their reared substantial stock of Robe moving lights, totalling over 250! Dave has been in the industry since the late 1980s and is well respected as both a lighting designer and an entrepreneur. Creative Productions’ investment in Robe, started around three and a half years ago and has accelerated in the last two years. The inventory now includes BMFL Spots, Blades and WashBeams, Spiider LED wash beams and Spikies … soon to be joined by the MegaPointes in time for an already busy looking winter season. The newest sales – most of the BMFLs, all the Spiiders and Spikies and now the MegaPointes – have been delivered by Jands, Robe’s distributor since mid-2017. Dave has enjoyed a great working relationship with Jands - who also distribute a host of other premium products - dating back many years. The new MegaPointes will be for stock as well as some imminent festivals like Splendour in the Grass 2019, a music and arts festival set

in the picturesque North Byron Parklands for which Creative provides lighting and video production for all stages together with floor packages for around 70% of the artists. Creative are the lighting supplier for The Fortitude live music venue in Brisbane and are currently considering putting Robe in there. They also supplied Robe movers for the Red and Black main stages at the 2019 Download Festival in Sydney and Melbourne. “It’s the reliability” states Dave when asked about Robe’s strong points. He recalls that of their initial batch of 16 x BMFL spots which have worked constantly, in three and a half years they have probably only had a couple of issues! Creative Productions works extensively in the rental, staging and touring sectors which are their specialist areas, and Dave notes that the Australian live events and festival season – despite many challenges – is now all year round and seems to be getting busier - for Creative at least! www.robe.cz

Christie Introduces Roadie 4K40-RGB Laser Projector laser and TruLife electronics can deliver. Similar to the Christie D4K40RGB, the Roadie doesn’t need external chillers, remote laser racks, or special pedestals because everything is incorporated into a single, allin-one chassis. With its strengthened frame, this rigging-ready projector is built for a life on the road. Rental stagers also will appreciate the Roadie’s omnidirectional capabilities as well as its compatibility with most Christie Boxer lenses for greater cost savings and flexibility.

For over a decade the Roadie line of Christie projectors has been the de facto product rental stagers turned to thanks to its renowned ruggedness, dependability, and brilliant, colourful images no matter the throw distance or setup configuration. Now, rental stagers can enjoy the Roadie 4K40-RGB laser version of the iconic product line – with an exceptionally wide colour gamut and true-to-life visuals all in a familiar form factor that only Christie RGB

Like its D4K40 older brother, the Roadie 4K40-RGB only requires single-phase 220V power, and produces greater than 95 percent of the Rec. 2020 colour space for the most robust, lifelike images. Capable of delivering over 30,000 hours of operation to 80 percent brightness, and 5000:1 contrast ratio, the Roadie 4K40-RGB has Christie’s patented sealed optical path, which, for most installations, means over eight years of uncompromised, virtually maintenance-free operation. At 298 pounds (135 kilograms), it is significantly lighter than its RGB pure laser competitors are. The Roadie 4K40-RGB laser is shipping. www.christiedigital.com

Vari-Lite’s New VL6500 WASH Delivers High Output and Vintage Styling Sharing the big-picture format of the VL6000 BEAM, the VL6500 WASH is a fully featured wash fixture with the same form factor and colourmatched presets as its award-winning sibling. While it shares the distinctive large front lens of the VL6000 BEAM, the VL6500 WASH also adds Vari-Lite’s iconic Dichro fusion blades. These unique blades offer diffusion with variable beam width and harken back to the vintage stylings of the Emmy Award-winning VL5.

Vari-Lite, the originators of the modern moving head lighting fixture and a Signify (Euronext: LIGHT) entertainment lighting brand, has released the Vari-Lite VL6500 WASH. This new high-output wash lighting fixture combines the VL6000 BEAM’s arena-scale performance with a head-turning visual attraction reminiscent of the legendary VL5, offering show designers an unmatched mix of modern power and vintage styling. ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com

One of the enhancements the VL6500 brings is Vari-Lite’s renowned full CYM+CTO colour system that provides numerous vivid and creative colour options. For even further creative colour possibilities, the VL6500’s extended colour range mode offers the ability to move the colour mixing wheels beyond full saturation back to open. This allows designers to use creative split colour effects that can be seen both in air and on the Dichro fusion blades. To simplify programming when moving between colour presets, the VL6500 offers the same Cloak Transition Generator (CTG) first seen on the VL6000. This allows the fixture to automatically dip to dark when moving between colour presets without additional programming. www.vari-lite.com

Electro-Voice Launches MFX Multi-Function Monitors MFX Multi-Function Monitors MFX-12MC and MFX-15MC are passive 12” and 15” two-way coaxial monitors with a performance level engineered to complement the X-Line Advance line array models X1, X2, X12-128 and X12-125F, and corresponding installation versions. MFX Multi-Function Monitors utilize highoutput coaxially aligned HF and LF transducers matched with an innovative new Electro-Voice-engineered ConstantDirectivity waveguide and a new crossover design. Coverage in monitor orientation is 40° H x 60° V. The dimensions and location of the waveguide interact with the woofer to effectively create a bipole output, enhancing coverage control through the midrange frequencies. In addition to providing a stable sound image as the performer moves off-axis, the compact coaxial design presents a significantly lowerprofile footprint on stage in comparison to competitive high-end monitors, helping to maintain audience sight lines and reducing stage clutter. A new cabinet concept with dual monitor angles (35° and 55°) allows the output to be precisely focused towards the performer. MFX Multi-Function Monitors are optimized for use with TGX10 or IPX10:4 amplifiers from EV’s sibling brand Dynacord. Both models ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com

Yamaha STAGEPAS all-in-one PAs are renowned for their audio quality, ease of use and transport. The STAGEPAS 1K takes these qualities to even greater heights.

acoustic guitars and other instruments), plus stereo inputs which support playback from Bluetooth devices. The mixer also features professional sound engineering tools, including 1-Knob EQ that handles multi-band processing simultaneously, highquality SPX digital reverb and a Mode feature to adjust optimised compression settings (such as speech or music) to match different applications. Each of these functions can be set via a single rotary control, simplifying many of the more difficult tasks like EQ and compression to quickly deliver great sound.

The new system features modified versions of the 1.5 inch (3.75 cm) drivers with high end neodymium magnets that have made Yamaha’s VXL series line array loudspeakers a great success in the professional sound installation market, receiving widespread praise for their audio quality, 170º horizontal coverage and slimline appearance. Bringing all of those qualities to the streamlined, reduced weight STAGEPAS 1K system, an array of 10 of the 1.5 inch drivers work seamlessly with a largest-in-class 12” subwoofer to deliver exceptionally uniform, high quality sound with clear highs and punchy lows. The subwoofer features Yamaha’s Twisted Flare Port technology, which effectively reduces wind noise in the bass reflex port, delivering a clearer, more powerful, distortion-free low end.

Users can also download the dedicated STAGEPAS Editor app for iOS/ Android, allowing remote adjustment of the system’s volume and EQ. It’s also possible to call up previously saved settings, enabling a more efficient rehearsal or performance.

Complementing the loudspeakers is a 1000W Class-D amplifier, delivering 119 dB SPL and maintaining exceptional stability and sound quality, even at high output.

For users requiring a greater coverage area or increased sound pressure levels, two STAGEPAS 1Ks can be easily linked together in stereo or in mono. When in mono, the inputs of both systems can be used, providing a total of six mono and two stereo inputs.

WHATSIT Brings New Intuitive and Comprehensive Plugin to Show Designers

WHATSIT, the French video mapping consultant and mega events specialist, has launched Lumings – a plug-in for the 3D design and modelling software application Sketchup, whose purpose is to simulate the technical rendering side of video mapping in the most realistic way possible. The video projection design tool is set to save valuable time and substantially reduce technical costs for technical videographers, scenographers and project managers alike. Lumings makes it possible to design an entire scenography before setting foot on site, thanks to its accurate and precise models and information. Another advantage, and what makes it unique to the market, is its comprehensive database, which integrates the technical characteristics of all existing professional projectors. Working closely with a who’s who of manufacturers, and following a thorough in-house development period, WHATSIT has gathered, tested and measured the necessary data to allow a show designer to precisely simulate a variety of factors, for any set of projectors. The projector’s illuminance, positioning, energy consumption and heat release can all be monitored, as well as wider concerns such as pixel size / distortion, or the impact of shadows on projection surfaces. Commented Pierre-Yves Toulot, Managing Director of WHATSIT, “In our job, speed of execution is a key factor, and we were looking for a reliable plugin that would allow us to be more efficient. So we started working on a plugin which would feel familiar to users, and we wanted to make it available to as many people as possible, so we decided Sketchup was the right platform.”

ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com

A two-way process The possibilities within Lumings are endless. Providing a solution for the most complex and uncharted video mapping configurations. It allows the user to simulate renders onto different materials and textures such as stone, metal, glass, mirrors etc. The 3D rendering is done using third part photorealistic engine. Lumings can work out and compile the list of equipment most suited to the job, as well as providing alternatives for optimal configurations, taking into account available equipment options. An unrivalled offer Lumings is the only product on the market to integrate such a complete database. The plug-in synthesizes numbers and images: there is no calculation required, since the data is already integrated. This means that integration can be achieved much faster than with any other alternative. Last but not least, Lumings does not require Internet access to function, which will allow the user to work on their project in any situation. Who is Lumings for? Lumings is able to simplify the work of many stakeholders at different levels of the creative process, from design offices, theme park managers and scenographers, to manufacturers or independent contractors. Toulot added: “Lumings is also ideal for service providers who might be looking for an effective tool to establish technical specifications

or architects that have an interest in adding video projection to their projects.” How can Lumings be accessed? Lumings works as a subscription, which provides the user with very frequent updates, though a lite version of Lumings is available for customers without a subscription. While this version does not allow manipulation of the project or modification of the layout of the projectors, it does offer the same visualisation possibilities as the complete plug-in.

Watch the Lumings introduction video:

WHATSIT has also made a free version available on request for academic entities. “We really want to make Lumings accessible to everyone, as well as offer the new generation of creatives a central platform in which they can learn and create”, explains Toulot.

Members of WHATSIT’s technical leadership have all contributed, in the course of their careers, to the development of large-scale shows and events. Each individual, whether specialising in lighting design, video mapping or art direction, is currently recognised as expert in his field on the international scene.

PALM Expo Seeks Wider Connect with Industry Annual ProAudio Event Expands with Dedicated AV Show and Presents Integrated Look

PALM Expo – India’s premiere trade show for live events, music production, lighting, and staging – on its 19th outing, essentially sought to present a wider and better integrated connect with the industry. In that, it restructured its offerings a bit, even as it made an essential stride- of turning its long-sought ambition into reality- to have an exhibition on ProAV. With new offerings of exhibits and related programming, besides, its own ‘certification’ initiatives, PALM Expo is apparently sending a message, rather softly!

The 2019 edition of PALM Expo – organized at the Bombay Exhibition Centre in Mumbai from 30 May-1 June – had all its regulars, and presenting in bigger numbers though! Number of exhibitors, exhibiting OEMs, exhibition space, new products, and of course, foot falls.

• In what appeared to be a rehash sort of a major industry development a few years ago, a major PAVA solutions provider chose the PALM Expo platform to announce its foray into audio segment

With an apparent re-orientation of the whole exhibition space and programming – thanks to the supposedly increasing demand from potentially demonstrative industry players – the event this time presented in somewhat ideally structured fashion.

Some of the regular Pro Audio majors created special product/ solution orientation spaces and programming on the show floor

Turning into reality of its passionately-pursued ambition- starting a dedicated exhibition space for Pro AV segment

Hall-1 remained thoroughly Pro Audio, while Hall-2 has been shared by both Pro Audio and Lighting solutions providers and Hall-3 came up as new addition, playing host to the event’s most ambitiously pursued extension – AV-ICNx – the dedicated exhibition space for Pro AV. Hall-5 continued with its last year’s introduction of Indoor Line Array Demo, and the VIP Parking Area was adorned by the PALM-esque Demo Cubes. Further, the Hall-2 – while playing audio and lighting side by side – also had the HARMAN Live Area on its Open Bay. The Grande Hall, on its part, turned into the demo space for Yamaha Music. The three-day annual industry fare, however, this time, was characterised by a few things of significance: ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com

• ADD to the above- a sort of the event’s own AV-esque certification programme •

You may also want to add yet another aspect- a dedicated exhibition space for AV Consulting, and Systems Integration firms (on the show floor of AV-ICNx)

“It was we few of the consulting fraternity, who ideated it,” discloses A R Chandrashekhar, Principal Consultant from the Delhi-based Anuwin Consultants. “It is one way of getting the industry together.” There were as many as six stalls from the SI/Consulting fraternity.

EXHIBITION REVIEW New Directions & Dimensions One of the few important dynamics of the event was the ‘arrival’ of brand Honeywell onto the Pro Audio domain. Originally made public in April itself about the foray, the PAVA solutions giant took to the nearest and country’s biggest Pro Audio show floor to send the message loud and clear. Honeywell Pro Sound – as the MNC’s audio initiative is called – brought a specific range of audio solutions to the show. The solutions showcased comprised:

43 JULY 2019

Bose Professional, perhaps, for the first time in recent times, launched a vast range of audio solutions comprising loudspeakers and amplifiers in India. Loudspeaker range included the DesignMax Series comprises as many as 12 loudspeakers, from 2-inch, low- profile models to 8-inch, high-SPL compression-driver loudspeakers and outdoor-rated options. The systems are characterised by features like Dispersion Alignment system, Bose-custom-drivers, SmartBass processing, patentedQuickHold mounting system, and no requirement of DSP or EQ, besides an elegant form factor. Aimed at ramping up their amplifier solutions for premium commercial applications, Bose Professional introduced at PALM Expo 2019, its new PowerSpace+ and PowerSpace versatile power amplifiers. The two models come with 150 or 300 watts per channel, built-in DSP, including SmartBass processing, routing, level control, delays, limiters, Bose loudspeaker EQs, plus input and area EQs, besides unique PowerSpace configuration utility facilitates setup with an integrated web server and intuitive browser-based UI.

The ProZeta series promising clear audio in easy-to-transport and set-up models, suitable for DJs and travelling musicians

The ProAlpha range offering a series of high-definition speakers ideal for clubs and high SPL (sound pressure level) venues, with high-quality amplification

The ProZoe series featuring what is claimed to be unparalleled sound quality with premium active line array technology. Available in versatile cabinets designed to suit both indoor as well as outdoor requirements, the ProZoe range comes with a 32-bit DSP processor and a software to maximize the built-in DSP engine

An extension of the Honeywell PAVA solutions Honeywell ProSound speakers range offers solutions to new verticals like hotels, malls, multiplexes, amphitheaters, clubs, educational institutions, and auditoriums. With the launch of this category, Honeywell turned a complete audio solutions provider with an attractive combination of products, meeting global industry standards to ensure superior sound, appealing design, high reliability, and excellent performance. “The performance-packed systems, complimented by the strong customer base, marketing muscle and network that Honeywell has in the country, are the new fancy on the market,” observed Amit Kaushal, General Manager, Buildings, Honeywell Building Technologies, India. “We are confident that the speaker range will prove to be the choicest offering for our discerning customers and its cutting-edge innovation, superior quality, uncompromising safety, and extraordinary sound performance, will resonate well with the industry.” The other big audio launches came from the PALM regulars- Bose Professional, Harman, Meyer Sound, Sennheiser, Shure, and Yamaha. ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com

For outdoor commercial applications, Bose Professional brought on two new Loudspeakers- the ArenaMatch DeltaQ array and ArenaMatch Utility loudspeakers. Featuring an IP55 weather rating, these systems make it easy to create outdoor loudspeaker systems for applications such as stadiums, arenas, outdoor entertainment centers, and more. Nine coverage patterns are available. Designers can choose from modules with 10°, 20°, or 40° vertical coverage and easily swap between 60°, 80°, or 100° horizontal waveguides. Built for zone-fill coverage or high-SPL foreground music, Bose ArenaMatch Utility loudspeakers feature similar tonal balance to ArenaMatch array modules — and the same EMB2S compression driver — but in compact designs. The audio giant also introduced two new ControlSpace processors optimized for conferencing rooms — the EX-440C and EX-12AEC — and a new, high-powered general purpose DSP — the EX-1280. The EX-440C and EX-1280 are compatible with the full range of Bose EX Dante endpoints. The EX-12AEC conferencing signal processor provides digital expansion for conference rooms using the EX- 1280C processor. More, Bose also brought on the new PowerShare adaptable power amplifiers with Dante connectivity.

“Musicians and sound engineers are constantly looking for innovations in the recording space that keep up with their needs and the changing dynamics of their business. For instance, portability is an important factor,” said Prashant Govindan, Head- HARMAN Professional, India and SAARC. “HARMAN’s next generation professional grade, studio and stage equipment are bound to resonate with the modern musicians’ exceedingly mobile lifestyles,” he said. “The reliable and superior accuracy of the newly launched AKG K245 headphones, and performance of the home-studio monitors and compact mixers will cater to the needs of both the young and experienced sound engineers, podcasters, singer-songwriters and audio professionals.” Sennheiser India too treated the visitors with an exhaustive show launches that are essentially characterised by as many as five significant introductions from the Sennheiser-Neumann family: • •

New XS Wireless Digital, IE 400 Pro, and IE 500 Pro Professional inear Monitors NDH 20, the first ever headphones by Neumann, and Neumann KH 750 Subwoofer

The XS Wireless Digital is essentially a cable replacement – working digitally – using a 2.4 GHz transmission to create a wireless peer-topeer connection. With a simple touch of a button, users can step away from cables and maintain a faithful connection. As a liberating solution for the musician moving about on stage, or a convenient approach to practicing in the rehearsal room, XS Wireless Digital empowers inner creativity with a roam free connectivity. Each XS Wireless Digital has only one button- to power up, and link simultaneously, and click once to mute, or hold to power down.

EXHIBITION REVIEW The brand-new series of IE 400 and IE 500 professional in-ears offer natural, high-resolution sound, a secure and comfortable fit that comes close to custom-moulded in-ears and a break-proof, patent-pending cable connection. The models target professionals across segment with IE 500 PRO being top-of-the-range followed by IE 400 PRO and IE 40 Pro designed as an entry model. IE 400 PRO and IE 500 PRO have reinvented the single dynamic driver principle while other in-ears in the same price range work on the balanced armature principle. The Neumann NDH 20, on the other hand, is a closed-back studio headphone combining excellent isolation with the carefully balanced sound image and outstanding resolution you would expect from a Neumann product. It is thus ideally suited for monitoring, editing and mixing tasks, even in loud and noisy environments. The NDH 20’s newly designed 38-mm drivers with high-gauss neodymium magnets ensure high sensitivity and low distortion. In other words, the NDH 20 would not need a dedicated headphone amplifier; it sounds just as great on mobile devices such as laptop computers. Another audio major Shure – displaying from the booth of its India distribution major Sun Infonet, demonstrated its newly launched Twinplex- a combo of premium subminiature (5-mm) omnidirectional lavalier and headset microphones.

Designed to stand up to the toughest conditions, TwinPlex provides natural audio at both high and low frequency when professional vocal performance is a must. The new patent pending capsule technology offers best-in-class sound in an easy-to-conceal package, ideal for quick costume changes or discreetly placed under wardrobe with no impact on sound quality. Developed with input from leading audio professionals, TwinPlex supports the diverse needs of theater, broadcast, film and television, and corporate presentations to produce high-quality audio production with superior dependability.

increasingly inquisitive users and buyers, both the spaces have had their own pull on the visitors. While the Twinplex space appeared to be for the more serious visitors wanting to have some in-depth knowledge about the working of the new technology system, the MIC Lab appeared to be more for the young musical enthusiasts. Similar was the PowerSoft booth, where they had created a dedicated solution-orientation space on its much-acclaimed audio design suite of ArmoniaPlus software demo- with a view to better reaching out to people with intent- which was of course pretty much on the lines what they did last year. NO Music Expo “We closed it down,” declared Anil Chopra. “It was indeed attracting huge numbers, but not necessarily relate to PALM; we found it tending to spoil the intent of the show, and flow on the aisles,” he observed. “So, with the objective of safeguarding PALM’s unique identity, we decided to close the show.” According to the Director, the DJ Expo has been doing great, and bringing more value adds by the year. The AV-ICNx : A New Chapter at PALM The newest – perhaps one of the most eagerly watched – additions has been the AV-ICNx, the dedicated exhibition space for audiovisual systems integration, communication and networking industry segments.

According to the organizers, it took some segregation and restructuring of the allocation of floor spaces for exhibitors so that the segment exhibition looked exclusive and no mixing with regular PALM crowds

Special Product-Orientation Spaces While the Demo Cubes have been one of the hallmarks of PALM Expo for a few years now, this year’s edition had somewhat old, trusted, but re-invented model of dedicated orientation spaces for promoting product/solution orientation.

Housed in Hall-3, the AV-ICNx, while it apparently did not have the same or similar footfalls, it did have its own ‘belonging’ visitors.

A case in a point was the dedicated Twinplex space and the MIC Lab, set up by Shure on the booth of its India distribution partner Sun Infonet. Set up with a clear intent of better reaching out to the

The PALM Expo 2019, thereby made its intent clear- resolve to create a wider connect with the industry.

Their soulful performance set the tone for the rest of the day where Aditi Ramesh Quartet and DCF_Shapes continued to woo the incoming audience. The best was saved for the last as the popular music sensation- Akriti Kakkar took the stage and got the audience dancing to the tune of Sufi and Bollywood music. But it was the final performance by Sitar Maestro Niladari Kumar that brought in a sea of people at the Arena who quietly consumed the genius of one of India’s biggest classical music artists. The second day began with a drum beats of renowned percussionist Sivamani who was joined by R Bharat Brass Band and Pianist Stephen Devassy. The Fanculos, a 5-piece Ska and Reggae band opened up the final day of HARMAN Live Arena 2019. Their cool tunes got the audience grooving along. Singer-Songwriter Nush Lewis followed the act with a spectacular performance with her harmonic harp. The afternoon was taken over, once again by Pianist Stephen Devassy attracting a huge crowd in the middle of the summer day, at the Arena. And to provide a fitting finale to three days of musical extravagance, HARMAN’s newest brand ambassador- Mame Khan’s Rock N Roots Project took to the stage. Mame Khan comes from the royal state of Rajasthan and was born in a family of master singers, who have been performing a unique, oral tradition since more than fifteen generations. This Folk-Fusion Collective set the stage on fire with their repertoire of traditional folk and Sufi songs. Suffice to say, it was the grandest of the musical finales at HARMAN Live Arena 2019. Along with enthralling consumers at Live Arena, HARMAN Professional solutions also launched a range of exciting new products that were at display at the HARMAN booth at Palm Expo. From foldable headphones by AKG to compact line array loudspeakers and reference monitors by JBL Professional, the products aim to give content makers the ability to hear all the details for better results while mixing and editing. In addition, HARMAN also exhibited a series of notepad mixers by Soundcraft and a number of awe-inspiring lighting products by Martin. The power of some of these products was on glorious display at the HARMAN Live Arena Stage. With these breathtaking performances and superlative sound, fans were left brimming with musical energy. Yamaha Music Make Waves At PALM

Yamaha Music, a major regular at the PALM Expo, has always been making its mark, in its own inimitable style and flavour. This year, the musical major – energized by new thrusts of globally common design of musical presentation on one side, and ‘make-in-India’ manufacturing competence on the other – apparently sought to “Make Waves” by dishing out an altogether new musical fare. On day-one, the Waves started off with the launch of the company’s first ‘Made in India’ product PSR-I500 keyboard where over 30 media publications were present to capture the newly-launched PSR-I500 system. Perhaps, the biggest success story at the PALM Expo 2019, the initiative was well taken by the visitors at large, as also the performers. Besides the PSR-1500, the musical major also showcased its yet another launch PSR-E360 wooden finish keyboard and Keytar SHS series. Yamaha Musical Instruments team specifically invited discerning music lovers from diverse walks of music applications- academia, places of worship (church musicians), music teachers, and the aspiring music explorers who were all awed at the finesse and precision of the musical instruments explained to them in detail. That digital mixers form an indispensable component of Yamaha Music, the Rivage Series was again in action, with the popular PM7 taking the show honours, of course, along with the newly-launched NEXO GEO M12 Line Array system, coming straight from NAMM Show in California recently. A big centre of attraction for the galaxy of musical glitterati that saw and awed by Yamaha’s Make Waves show, the GEO M12 was understandably awarded the Outstanding Professional Audio Product at PALM Sound & Light Awards! As part of the CIS and EIS display, Yamaha collaborated with PA&AV to virtually unveil a vast range of installation-imaginable areasexemplified by the WX series of amplifiers- WX-030 for relaxing and rejuvenating background music for Spa; WX-A50 powering a calm and pleasing background music through VXC6 at a banquet hall; and WXC50 connected to VXS8 through PX3 power amp for an energetic, and pulsating music application in a gym. ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com

Yet another important product showcasing was the Steinberg new line up with Cubase10, Nuendo 10, AXR4T along with UR-RT Interfacespractically taking the milling audio enthusiasts by awe. The musical minds here, nevertheless, included musicians, sound-engineers, and aspiring music professionals, apart from students. The highlight of the programming here was the playback of Indian instrumental song-video based on Indian Raga; it was recorded on new Steinberg AXR4T. It was a captivating show all through- both for the visitors and for the Yamaha MI teams. While the audiences in general got to be treated some incredible experiences, the discerning music lovers and exponents spent valuable time to try, test, and experience the systems before giving out their impression of rapture. The biggest factor for most of them was that they got to see such an expansive musical fare being shown and made experiential under one roof. It was the making precision and finesse of the systems for some, while it was the technological innovation, and ease and pleasure of use for other tech audiophiles. Yamaha Music has always built strong relations with audio designers and developers across the market segments, maintains the Yamaha Music spokesperson. “We will continue to do that, particularly tapping into the small and medium-size retail and hospitality segments,” the spokesperson said. “With the new energy levels adding, we are more proactive in our pursuits.” in.yamaha.com

AV-ICNx, A New Horizon of AV?

At the PALM Expo this year, the talk of the show in one sense – at least for the readers of these columns – wasn’t about numbers and percentages. It’s about the decisive move it embarked upon from its iconic platform! It’s about the exhibition’s extension dedicated to Professional AV domain. A long-contemplated ambition of the organizers, the exclusive show – now named AV-ICNx – aimed at presenting product and system solutions from the domains of integration, communications and networking, thereby addressing the expectations of systems integrators and consultants, besides AV users at large. It may be noted that the show – originally named AV-ISE – was renamed as AV-ICNx, to avoid conflict of interest with the popular ISE show from Europe. According to the PALM Expo Director Anil Chopra, the event think tank – while wanting to create a holistic offering of Pro Audio and AV concurrently, thereby meeting the long-sought demands of the industry communities – did not want to create any environment of discomfort with other or similar show organizers- within or outside India. “The very genesis of the model was pretty much organic, and not at all pre-meditated,” asserted Chopra. “We know there is a dedicated ProAV exhibition platform in India, and they are doing a tremendous job in promoting the cause of AV,” he maintained, “but the feedback from our market study over the years had been telling us there is a need for more; one show is not enough. It is part of that thought process we had this compulsive extension.” (Read separate Interview) Interestingly, the AV-ICNx had its own dedicated technical sessions ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com

conducted by the likes of renowned AV names such as Kelvin-Ashby King, Ranjit Singh, and Kuldip Kamat and more. More, the show has a dedicated exhibition space of for Systems Integration and Consulting firms. As many as five consulting and SI firms – ADJM Technologies, All-Wave AV, EYTE Technologies, COLCOM and Rhino Engineers – had their booths on the show floor. “It’s good to be at places like this,” observed Narendra Naidu, Managing Director of Rhino Engineers. “Normally we go around client offices and sites spending significant amount of time to explain what we could do for them; here, we have the breathing space to sit and explain our competency and expertise to multiples of people and groups.” That the event programme had almost all of them involved in technical sessions, it appeared to be more comforting for these exhibitors to be in sync with the show, and their profession. Interestingly, the opportunity is apparently best taken by two newlyemerged AV design firms- COLCOM and EYTE Technologies. COLCOM (Collaboration & Communication Technologies Pvt Ltd) – the Indian member company of the Singapore-headquartered ESCO Group – took the opportunity to spread the word effectively across the market. According to Anthony Immathy, General Manager-Purchases & Logistics at COLCOM, being a comparatively new company on the market, it was a nice opportunity for them to spread the word across the market.

EXHIBITION REVIEW

“We are a full-fledged AV design-integration company now in India,” said Anthony Immathy, General Manager-Purchases & Logistics at COLCOM. “We have built our own strengths, and we also derive some competencies from ESCO Singapore,” he said. “We complement each other in areas that require support.”

every aspect of AV in terms of programming that included technology, education, and training; also the shows’ having lesser number of visitors – as against the milling crowds of PALM – worked in their favour. They could address their visitors with better focus. In three days of the show, they were able to meet over 500 people of which about 50 per cent were unique visitors, explained Pawan. “We were able to get around 34 online registrations which included independent Consultants, IT Managers from End User companies, and senior executives from high-profile SIs,” he detailed. “On the second day, we had 25 people taking our training programme and certification test.” The company showcased their flagship products- the VLX series (1Gbps 4K AV over IP), IPX Series (10Gbps 4K AV over IP), HDBaseT HT Series, ReAX. There was no specific India launch product but these series had some newly added features which were highlighted.

So was the case with EYTE Technologies. Set up by former RST senior executives Abdul Waheed and Arif Patel, the new AV design-integration firm appeared happy that they stood ease of communicating with AV fraternity about their new initiative. “It’s normally the exhibitors wish on tradeshow floors that they want footfalls of End Users and AV designers; here we’re in the same league,” he said smilingly. “Our goal is to reach the same people, and it’s the place to do it, more so for us, with new Enterprise name to our portfolio.” On the manufacturers front, the AV-ICNx had a good number exhibitors so to say. Some of the prominent names included Aurora Multimedia, BenQ, Cloudwalker, Epson, MarQ LED, Newtech Video Systems, RGB Link, VCore, and Video Wall India Pvt Ltd. “The AV-ICNx is a bold initiative,” observed Pawan Kumar of Aurora Multimedia, one of strong positive factors for the show. “It also appears to be a well-marketed exercise, particularly, in Tier-II & III regions; we had integrators from these regions, and working on small, medium, and large projects visiting out booth,” he elaborated. According to him, the AV-ICNx scored on few aspects. Other than connecting with AV players from Tier-II & III regions it touched almost

BenQ India brought to the show both its popular and newly-launched display and projection solutions. The display solutions included the IL350-35-inch interactive display signage system; TL321- 32-inch transparent display signage system; BH2401- a 24-inch stretch display plug-n-play solution, besides others. The highlight of the show, among the signage demos, was the E520 Smart Wireless Business Projector, aimed at wireless projection applications in business environments. “It does appear to be a good show, but we need to be watchful, cannot just judge off the cuff,” felt the company executive on the booth.

Epson India – arguably the largest exhibitor on the AV-ICNx Show floor – presented a vast range of the company’s high-brightness laser projectors. The highlight of the show was however the edge-blending solution with a combination of its EB Series 3LCD laser projectors creating a large canvas of projected surface- fit for a large cinematic or corporate auditorium application. Matching the impact of the edge-blending projection canvas were the EB-700U, Epson’s ultra-short throw Full HD 3LCD laser projector, and the EB-L510U WUXGA 3LCD Projector aimed at education and business environments. “Epson is numero uno projection brand in in India, and the world; so are its projection solutions,” affirms Harish A.K. Business Head-Visual Products at Epson India. “The 3LCD projection technology is pioneered by Epson and the laser projection is a new value-add, taking the experience to a new level,” he said. “We are presenting the same here.” The dominant segment at the show, however, was the LED solution providers, some of them coming from China.

The show did have some digital signage, and wireless meeting room solutions. The CloudWalkar was one notable exhibitor from the segment, presenting its AirStream and CloudToch meeting room solutions.

Ranjit Singh conducting the CAVS training The AV-ICNx was also characterized by what it fondly called the CAVS ( Certified AV Specialist ) programme- as part of which renowned AV Trainer-Specialist Ranjit Singh conducted training classes over three days of the event. The attendees were put through subsequent tests and awarded certifications accordingly. The technical sessions had presentations, lectures, and also trainings from both manufactures and Consultants. The inaugural AV-ICNx show, while it had mixed responses from visitors and exhibitors, is generically taken to be a bold initiative with some positive intent. www.av-icnx.com

PALM EXPO

AV-ICNx – An Organic Expansion of PALM It’s been, perhaps, one of the most debated issues amongst the Indian Pro Audio and Pro AV industry ranks in recent times. Handling the debate with an assertively positive intent is Anil Chopra, the Director of PALM Expo- in his pursuit of the event’s ‘organic’ expansion to include a dedicated show for ProAV, now renamed as AV-ICNx from AV-ISE. ETA caught up with Anil to dig a little deeper. Excerpts:

We felt it was not fair on us not to present them with those solutions; we felt it was our duty to try and bring something they can explore. ETA: There is a dedicated event on Pro AV in the country, and supposedly doing its might…then why… ANIL: We know InfoComm-AVIXA is already doing a dedicated show on ProAV, with a distinct display factor; we all know that they are doing a tremendous job too, getting together various players from AV systems manufacturers and developers as also thought leaders to spread the AV awareness. However, looking at the widening gap of demand-supply, and our pressing feedback, we felt there was an emergent need for providing more opportunities for industry users- both in terms of knowledge and system solutions. So, in the light of both our feedback, and truly commendable efforts by InfoComm/AVIXA, we wanted to evolve a model without causing any impression of discomfort on either side. It was also an imperative from our own perspective. ETA: Could you please elaborate on the imperative?

ETA: PALM Expo is so strongly positioned in Pro Audio space. Why did you go for Pro AV show? ANIL: There has been an increasing pressure on us from the industry ranks to provide the display factor. We had as many as 4,000 visitors registering themselves as systems integrators. They were all along buying speakers, mics and other audio stuff for installing in clubs, pubs, auditoriums etc., and coming to the PALM show seeking display solutions. Our market study showed there are hundreds of thousands of people either using or depending on audio-visual systems in various lines of business but did not have adequate channels to know what exactly they wanted, let alone buying or using the AV systems. Thanks to the exponential growth in the market, particularly in segments relating to AV deployment, the demand-supply gap has only been widening year-on-year. Hospitality, education, transport, corporates, and more! Amazon is putting up over 700 warehouses in the country, and they need to be networked for proper distribution. There are over 500 colleges in the country being upgraded, or coming anew every year; over 21 cities coming up with new age metro rails; hospitality- beyond one’s imagination….

ANIL: It is a simple fact that PALM does have and getting increasing numbers from players with big stakes in ProAV. For example, LED solution providers and their users, and some of the projection solution majors; we could not keep them merged and submerged in PALM. PALM has evolved into its own iconic brand, where AV in its strict sense was not getting the required identity. That the key areas of integration, communication, and networking – pretty much used by most PALM visitors – were not getting addressed they were ought to be, we had to evolve a model that provides the intended opportunity. By virtue of that, it required a dedicated space and platform. So, what we did? As it is, Hall-1 was already running out of space with more and more exhibitors getting into it; we had to, anyway, move some companies to a separate hall. The only non-audio people we could move out were the LED players; so we moved the LED and other display exhibitors from PALM floor to the dedicated space, the AV-ICNx. That obviously opened the opportunity for others as well. ETA: Does it mean PALM now intends to focus separately on Audio, Video, display, networking etc.? ANIL: Yes. PALM is more of audio- that is established. Lighting, as it is, got a dedicated space two years ago. Now, all display solutions are

under AV-ICNx. Having moved LED people to separate hall, we again realized, it needed other components as well, like networking and communications. So, we had to add them as well. So, it was so much organic, and not at all pre-meditated. In my first message to the industry, I wrote it is purely organic. I’m tempted to say it is altruistic as well. I say this because creating a separate exhibition hall for just seven LED companies is highly expensive and plainly non-viable. So, we needed to bring complimentary elements so that they all can together present an ‘integrated’ industry chain. Which is nothing but systems integration. I honestly feel even one InfoComm, and one AV-ICNx are not sufficient for India; it needs more opportunities and platforms to cater to the fast expanding demands. ETA: You had a dedicated AV show in Delhi but stopped, you could have continued with it? ANIL: We did sense the opportunity so early which was why we went all the way up North- essentially not to send any discomforting message to our industry friends InfoComm, and then cater to the potentially big North Indian AV sector. However, we may have been early timers, as the dynamics were still evolving, and not so much supportive. So, we took a measured step back. But not now. At this point, we want to focus on AV-ICNx for 2020. ETA: AV-ICNx started off with its own Certification Programme. How do you justify this vis-à-vis your acknowledgement and appreciation of AVIXA’s trainings and CTS programme, per se? ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com

52 JULY 2019

ANIL: Good one. Let me emphasise that there is NO conflict of interest here; it’s rather complementary. AVIXA trainings, and CTC programmes are so much thorough and focussed in details, finer aspects. The CAVS programme we initiated is just a certificate of completion of a training in an aspect of AV, not a complete course. This will stand the trainees in a better position to understand AV in its proper perspective, not necessarily turn into ‘Certified Professional.’ Again, like I maintained, the wide gap of demand-supply in AV permeates into education and awareness of AV too. So, before wanting to use and benefit from AV, one needs to understand what it is, and does. CAVS contributes to that, and no way against CTS and such others. ETA: Now, your excessive focus on AV-ICNx may dilute the PALM competence? ANIL: No way. This was a long-sought area we pursued with intent. It doesn’t affect the strength of PALM. We have been trying to improvise both visitor and exhibitor experience every time. We put restrictions on noise making activities on the show floor; we also moved the lighting to separate hall; and you know what we did with line arrays and demo cubes. So, we have been relentlessly trying to make the PALM show stay focussed. We will strive to do that- even as we continue our efforts to compliment AV segment.

Quality Funny how the topic for the column always comes up easy by looking at the past four weeks of events. I will spend the editorial for this issue on “quality”, and I will share my view on this with you, and I hope to hear back from you about yours as well. There is no real objective level for quality within pro audio, and a lot of this depends on the personal perspective, but those with a more successful career in our industry have always shined through this extra bit of quality in their work, and I find that both inspiring and also motivating to strive towards. Allow me to share some of the bad examples with you here to explain. I listened to some presentation from a Video gear manufacturer during the recent BCA show in Singapore, and the live audio from the headset of the presenter was awful during three different presentations over the course of two days. I understand that they don’t care about audio at all. Now, what would make me think whether they do care about video then? On another booth, a gentleman was explaining a content managing product to two guys, and he used a wireless microphone for his presentation through a sound system that would have easily fed the entire room. However, the guys were standing next to him, and he would not have needed amplification at all. I was slightly tempted to tell him that volume does not equal quality, and I know that in several Asian Countries, this misconception is widely spread. Finally, 3D Audio is somewhat hyped these days, and with several Pro Audio loudspeaker manufacturers offering their specific approach and solution to this, I think it is fair to look at the quality of those as well. During the KOBA show in Seoul in May, I listened five different times to a life demo installation of such a 3D Audio spatializer system, and the audio was so bad that I kept dragging people back there to show them how bad it is. Maybe that was even their intention and marketing, to make it so bad that people start talking about it just because of this. I found this embarrassing even though it was not my product. As a conclusion, I feel we need to raise the bar overall quite a bit still, and we all need to seriously ask ourselves if we do enough to get the best quality out of our shows. This is tough and long hours, and sometimes inhumane working conditions do not really help, but if you cannot manage to do this, I strongly recommend rethinking about being in this industry at all. Listen and listen very critically to your own work, watch the audience and their reactions to what you are doing. You will be able to read if you are doing all right by just paying attention to this alone.

ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com

As a conclusion, I feel we need to raise the bar overall quite a bit still, and we all need to seriously ask ourselves if we do enough to get the best quality out of our shows. There was a time when bands and customers wanted to sound live like their vinyl or like their CD, and that gave you the quality reference. Many times this was a challenge because of all the cool things you can do in a studio and during post-production - you did not have all those tools on stage. I have always listened to my work with the specific question, if as an audience or viewer, would I enjoy listening to this mix and this performance and as long as the answer was yes, I was fine, and my customers were happy with my work. The fact that I feel the need to raise this here again among us tells me that we still have a long way to go and I would love to encourage us all to try to do better every day. I promise you that the outcome is gratifying and the audience will thank you for it. Join the conversation and share your thoughts with Alex. Alex can be reached at alex@asaudio.de

Object Based 3D Sound by Katinka Allendar

For leading South Korean e-sports promoter and broadcaster OGN it’s first dedicated North American e-sports arena, located in Los Angeles has Astro Spatial Audio at the centre of the new e-sports studio Bjorn van Munster, Director / Owner at Astro Spatial Audio in Odiliapeel, Netherlands gives some insight into his company’s offering in object-based spatial audio for the 3D audio reproduction of sounds and acoustic environments. Prior to establishing and running Astro Spatial Audio, he worked in audio consultancy design and planning and project management roles. He holds a Master’s degree in building physics. In your own words, can you explain what object-based 3D sound is? Object-based audio is the opposite of channel-based audio. Channelbased audio has the fundamental limitation that the perception depends on the exact channel output, meaning in order to experience the sound in the same way as imagined during the creation process you need to have exactly the same speaker layout. Otherwise you lose the relationship between the speakers and have to remix everything again. In our system we work with true audio objects. We enter the x, y and z coordinates of each speaker in the system, then we add metadata to the audio file, so it becomes an object. This combination makes the audio smart and does away with the limitations of channel-based surround sound. Rather than having to duplicate an exact loudspeaker set-up, with Astro Spatial Audio, your production becomes fully scalable from one venue to the next, irrespective of the speaker configuration. In this way, object based audio ensures that audio productions are no longer dependent on an exact speaker arrangement, as all objects are calculated in real time based on the arrangement at the venue.

ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com

For large, complex productions this really is a huge advantage. We don’t think in terms of 5.1, 7.1, 22.2 channels of audio anymore. We think about proper loudspeaker coverage of the immersed space while the object based audio is calculated automatically. How does this create a different experience for the audience? With true object-based audio we are able to position objects all around the audience area to intensify the experience of the show, helping the audience to become immersed in the production. With the Astro Spatial Audio SARA II Premium Rendering engine, we do this not only in 360 degrees horizontally but in three dimensions. Furthermore, we can localize sources much more accurately, both on stage and also in surround. What is the difference between this and putting speakers across the venues as usual? Rather than requiring specific speaker layouts we focus mainly on coverage of the space to deliver the experience to all listening positions in the crowd. In order for us to be able to focus this way, we have ensured that our system is brand agnostic. In that respect, we work with all manufacturers allowing us to optimize installations technically, aesthetically and financially. For us coverage, SPL and timbre are the important features in the design of a speaker layout. Different points of attention are given to the speaker layout depending on whether the application is fulyl immersive, using localization or anything else.

FEATURE What infrastructure or indeed expertise is needed to make this work seamlessly? Our system supports either MADI or Dante I/O, and we can be included in the normal signal chain, so the infrastructure does not really change a lot. In cases where backup solutions are required, we can setup different configurations. Having all these speakers in a multichannel surround configuration, time alignment becomes even more important. Temporal and spectral alignment of the system is critical for the success of the system. In terms of expertise, our user interface is simple to use so there is a fast learning curve. When a new user gets behind the system, they should be able to start working with it within 5-10 minutes. What do organisations who have used or tried the technology say about it? We have been delighted to work alongside some excellent audio professionals, including our colleagues within OGN on the PUBG events, plus with large rental and production companies and with some of the world’s leading sound designers. For example, we worked recently on a high profile eSports event in London. We have also been involved with everything from opera houses and theatres on Broadway and the West

End to art galleries and EDM venues. If a user has a creative vision, we are here to support that. In what markets, will we first see growth, if any? Are there any market trends we should know about? We believe immersive audio is going to become mainstream soon. If I look at my children, they think every screen is a touch screen, because that is how the world looks to them as they have been growing up. They are also growing up in a world with YouTube, gaming and streaming all taking place in a multi-dimensional format. By the time they are going to concerts, they will expect immersive audio. We believe the question is not IF it will come, but rather WHEN and HOW. We see ideas coming up everywhere at the moment in the live and entertainment industries, from EDM to classical music and from eSports to art galleries. We are in that respect getting beyond the ‘early adopter’ stage, where even we are frequently surprised by the creativity and opportunities that people give us for applications. www.astroaudio.eu

Recreating the Experience Using Spatial Audio What is spatial audio? It’s basically sound that gives you a sense of space beyond conventional stereo (front left and right) and enabling the listener to determine where the sound is coming from so that they become enveloped within the experience.

It’s seeing some uses already in entertainment technology applications in Asia. Festivals

Spatial audio is as close to what we hear in real-life. It comes in two forms which are binaural and object based. It’s worth mentioning that binaural is generally headphones and object-based audio is a principle of working to spatialize sound. Object-based spatial audio can help with storytelling adding atmosphere, drama, insight, fear or even strong emotions such as anger, anticipation and excitement. The technology is seeing a new breed of spatial audio studio managers, sound operators and producers. These audio professionals are reinventing production, post production and working with manufacturers to lower sound costs and start-up equipment. Object-based spatial audio encodes each audio source with metadata such as position (usually X, Y and Z coordinates), acoustic characteristics, movement etc. These are rendered towards the speaker setup on hand to create an overall user experience, that if required, can be flexible and responsive to the user – even in real-time - using environmental and platform-specific factors. Essentially, this format can reproduce audio from mono right through to a full 3D environment. ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com

FEATURE the stage, speaker hangs were placed across the stage to immerse and envelop the audience in sound. “From an audio point of view, the goal was to give our DJs and producers the ability to spatialise their content when playing live. The design was very much led by the desire to not only achieve the highest quality audio that would encompass everyone who visited our stage, but to maximise our ability to freely move audio within our custom speaker configuration, a hemisphere of loudspeaker sources, encompassing the audience with surround and overhead layers.” – Hugo Heathcote, Co-Director at Polygon Live. “Optimizing the positions in the X, Y and Z axis, as well as aiming the speakers in order to minimize the reflections have been a major part of the whole system alignment,” stated Marc Piera from Paris-based Théâtre National de Chaillot. “So many companies are making huge investments in the cultural industry. Just a few decades ago it was difficult to even see a movie in China, but now it is easy, and there are many entertainment choices everywhere…” Mr. HE LiDe, co-producer. “The project broke eight Guinness World Records with the technology we installed and the scenery including a huge projection screen, lifesize robot dinosaurs, and several landscape features,” adds Wymen Wong, co-producer. www.amadeusaudio.fr eSports and gaming

The Long Gone Dinosaur Show covers about 10,000 sqm space at the Beijing National Indoor Stadium. It tells the story of the rise and fall of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago and includes forests, a lake, a mountain, rain, immersive sound, and life-size robot dinosaurs that move around the stadium space using a hidden rail system. In addition to the 3D ‘realistic’ indoor landscape, a massive, curved 150-meter wide by 30-meter high screen running at 12K resolution adds to the experience.

For leading South Korean e-sports promoter and broadcaster OGN, the enormous popularity of Player Unknowns’s Battlegrounds has prompted the opening of its first dedicated North American e-sports arena, located in Manhattan Beach, Los Angeles, California.

The speaker system is based on two main frontal ‘speaker antennas’ working on the WFS (Wave Field Synthesis) principles. The upper one features eight clusters, each one including four Amadeus DIVA XL line array systems paired with one DIVA XL SUB. The bottom antenna features 13 clusters, each one including five DIVA XS line array systems paired with one DIVA XS SUB. The left and right side surround zones are covered by four arrays (two per side) each one including four DIVA XL line array systems paired with one DIVA XL SUB. In addition, 32 ‘UDX 15’ point source speakers are used as top surround loudspeakers.

Astro Spatial Audio is at the centre of the new e-sports studio, bringing true object-based three-dimensional sound to one of the world’s fastest-growing areas of sports entertainment.

IanniX graphical open-source sequencer was used to design and write spatial trajectories in a 3D space with direct manipulation of the sound and music score. The audio creation was encoded using Holophonix and then recorded on a 64-channel digital TASCAM multitrack recorder / player.

Matthew Park at OGN first experienced Astro Spatial Audio at a demonstration in Seoul. Park is happy to report that it is more than meeting his expectations. “It’s helping a lot,” he asserted.

Measuring just 3U but delivering up to 128 MADI or 128 Dante configurable network pathways, the SARA II converts audio signals into audio objects and uses extensive metadata to precisely calculate that object positions within virtual 3D space over 160,000 times per second, as well as that object’s acoustic effect on the virtual space around it.

Binaural immersive experience Fear and anxiety are explored in this intense Flight experience inside the tight confines of 40-foot high shipping container replicating a doomed Airbus 320.

In designing the audio, the team used Neumann KU100 dummy head microphones for a truly immersive binaural listening experience (that’s 3D audio that’s indistinguishable from real sounds, transmitted directly to each audience member using headphones).

Flight was at Edinburgh Fringe 2018 and at the Adelaide Fringe Festival, Australia in February 2019. The 30-minute show was created by David Rosenberg and Glen Heath with Australia’s Realscape Productions. David Rosenberg, artistic director explains that the experience is “inherently unnerving for an audience. We wanted to explore the nature of being in a box with other people in the dark.”

“We also used a combination of live microphones that blend the live sound of the audience with recorded sounds – virtually indistinguishable from each other during the performance. The headphones we use are Vic Firth SIH2 passive stereo noise isolating headphones - which isolate the audience and allow us to control the sonic environment much more,” said Victoria Eyton, Creative Producer.

Upon boarding, passengers are given headsets and a flight attendant welcomes everyone aboard via an overhead JBL Control 1 Pro audio speaker. As the plane approaches 30,000 feet above ground, increasingly muffled inflight announcements become more disturbing as turbulence is heard using binaural sound recordings. The cabin lights go out and ‘passengers’ are left in total darkness. Fear is amplified by more low frequency sounds, sounds of whispers, phones ringing and children crying as well as vibrations, temperature changes and pneumatic movements and heady aromas. Lighting is kept to a minimum as the show relies on darkness to trigger anxiety and fear.

Sound Adventures Makes Auspicious Début at Cho Kabuki NATiON creates a fully object-based unrivalled immersive audio for performance

Yoshitsune Senbonzakura (Yoshitsune and the Thousand Cherry Trees) is one of the most popular kabuki plays in Japan. Senbonzakura itself, a ‘Vocaloid’ song launched on the Japanese video-sharing website Nico Nico Douga, originally became a major hit leading to live stage performances and novels, and creating a new collaboration— Hanakurabe Senbonzakura. This was a kabuki production first, bridging the past and the present, and premièred at the Niconico Chokaigi Festival in 2016.

performance extremely innovative. It is also an interesting composition that combines traditional Kabuki performance with modern technology such as CG, VR, AR, and motion capture.

When the ‘Cho Kabuki supported by NTT’ event was held recently at Makuhari Messe Event Hall in Chiba, Martin Audio Sound Adventures system made an auspicious Japanese debut. This is known as one of the main event booths of Nico Nico Super Conference, which is annually held in Makuhari Messe during the May public holiday and is designed with the aim of reproducing Nico Nico Video live—described as the melting pot of Japan’s internet.

Martin Audio loudspeakers, in combination with Astro Spatial Audio software and processing, combined to produce an unrivalled immersive 3D sound field—a fully object-based immersive audio delivering new creative options for live acts and theatres worldwide. The proprietary SARA II rendering engine turns audio inputs (pre-recorded material, audio console, mics) into audio objects by adding metadata such as Level; Spatial position; Acoustic characteristics; Velocity; Distance and Point source or Plane wave.

It was therefore fitting that this year’s Hanakurabe Senbouzakura was performed in a more upgraded version than in its premier year, providing a perfect backdrop for Sound Adventures to show its ability to move audio objects in space.

Iwao Tsurusawa, director of MSI Japan, one of the country’s leading PA companies, stated, “Cho Kabuki is trying very advanced things with

a combination of cutting-edge technologies in video and production methods, led by NTT, Dwango and Shochiku.” “However, looking at the previous three shows, we had used a conventional stereo setting for the PA. This year, we suggested to the production company, NATiON, a more challenging solution using the new Martin Audio Sound Adventures, knowing it would be a perfect solution for the audio. The production team was also very keen in trying new things to make the performance better, so this request was accepted.” In this setting, in addition to front L/C/R flying rigs (and rear L/R), four point-source loudspeakers on pole mounts per side were used as side channels. The main L/R hangs consisted of eight MLA per side, eight MLA Compact in the centre array, eight WPM at the rear arrays per side, and eight DD12 as the side channels. The core of the Sound Adventures’ SARA II engine was located under the stage, and all signals were delivered via a Dante audio network. A total of four Auvitran AudioToolBox were used for Dante distribution for the various locations, and eight DD12 on the wall were connected using AES3 via Audinate AVIO. The Martin Audio WPMs at the rear were powered by Martin Audio iK42 multi-channel DSP power amplifiers which, with its Dante input, made it very convenient for remote installation. The three Martin Audio MLX subwoofers were installed side by side so that they would not disturb the stage passage. FOH engineer, Mr. Takahashi from Shochiku Show Biz Studio, said, “Sometimes, we receive a request to make a 3D sound for the normal Kabuki performance as well. We have usually worked on channel-based solutions with DAW, but it would be useful if this kind of object-based solution would spread further.” The original plan had been for Miku Hatsune’s vocal sound to appear from all around the venue along with the opening image video. After checking the production, they instead decided that the sound of

thunder and the voice of the dragon’s should be localised at the back of the venue while Miku’s voice continued to ‘fly’ right around the venue. “It is the strength of SARA II’s object-based solution that we could respond flexibly to such last-minute production changes,” noted Mr Takahashi. Mr.Tanabe, of production company, NATiON, explained, “When I first listened to Sound Adventures during trials, I thought it could be used to make a superior production than usual. When I actually listened to it in the venue, I was totally convinced of the success of the show as I felt a sense of presence and impact that I had never experienced previously. I also heard the audience’s favourable response. “Therefore, I can see myself using this in various productions in the future.” martin-audio.com

TDC Helps Amaze and Thrill Vivid Sydney Visitors in 2019 A kaleidoscope of colours reproduced by 70 projectors; 1,600,000 lumens; 161,280,000 pixels; 36 kms of cable

Vivid Sydney – the largest festival of light, music and ideas in the Southern Hemisphere – was brought to life recently. Once again, Australian entertainment technology company TDC –Technical Direction Company – played a significant role in surprising and delighting visitors from Sydney, Australia and around the world. As the company has done for the previous ten years, TDC provided expertise in large scale projection mapping, LED video and technology for a number of the 50+ features. Vivid Sydney is Australia’s largest event, and celebrates creativity and innovation across all three pillars – light, music and ideas. It takes place annually, and features immersive light installations and projections, performances from local and international musicians as well as an ideas exchange forum featuring public talks and debates from leading creative thinkers. The event attracts over 2 million people. Vivid Sydney is owned, managed and produced by the NSW Government’s tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW, and runs from 24 May to 15 June throughout Sydney.

ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com

Michael Hassett, Founder and Managing Director at TDC said: “The use of projection mapping and video display – using projected light and images to turn buildings and architecture into dynamic art projects has exploded over the past few years and Vivid Sydney is one of the top examples. We see this trend increasing with a larger focus on interactivity where the audience can really engage with technology and art.” Although TDC has played a key role in Vivid Sydney for a number of years, that doesn’t mean that the company was resting on its laurels. “We’ve approached this year in a completely fresh, new way – trying to achieve something even better,” said Steve Cain, Head Engineer and Media Server Specialist at TDC. “We switched most architectural landmarks over to the 3D workflow with disguise media servers, and away from 2D playback systems. That allowed us to take advantage of the most recent advances in media server technology - 3D modelling, for example. Those features give us far more accurate pre-production planning and projection studies, allowing us to deliver increased

Vivid Sydney welcomes over 2 million visitors each year, and integral to the success of any large scale event is pedestrian flow. With this in mind Destination NSW approached TDC to develop a system that could relay messages to visitors in real time throughout the city.

The iconic locations at which TDC’s creativity and ingenuity were witnessed this year include the Sydney Opera House; the Museum of Contemporary Art; Customs House; Argyle Cut; Taronga Zoo; Cadmans Cottage; and the Rocks branch of the English, Scottish and Australian Chartered Bank.

TDC’s Technical Services and New Media Manager, Drew Ferors conducted all the R&D into a bespoke solution that resulted in the creation of a city-wide video messaging system: “TDC LIVE View Signage”.

This year, TDC deployed no fewer than 70 Barco projectors. “We were shooting around 1,600,000 lumens of light out with a staggering 161,280,000 pixels transforming buildings across Sydney into impressive works of art,” says Alex Rendell, one of TDC’s Project Manager for Vivid Sydney.

“We designed a system that saw 14 large LED screens deployed throughout the city that were accessible via the cloud from a single point, and that enabled the same messaging to be displayed on each LED screen.. it was exciting to trial this system at Vivid Sydney,” said Ferors.

“We’re also proud to have run a city-wide monintoring system, our TDC Live View automation platform developed by TDC for show synchronisation, together with real time monitoring and reporting,” he added, noting that TDC had laid some 36 kilometres of cable and fielded a crew of around 30 technical staff.

The trial run was so successful that TDC LIVE View Signage is now available for rental to other organisations.

Congress Rental Singapore at the 33rd ASEAN Summit Bosch simultaneous interpretation solutions ensure clear dialogue between world leaders

CHALLENGES

* The multi-purpose convention center provided no permanent interpreter booths or wiring for interpretation hardware. * Close to 20 meetings between world leaders took place in separate meeting rooms, with each room and meeting requiring its own interpretation set-up. * The temporary interpreting solution needed to be ready within only three days leading up to the summit. As one of the most important events organized by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the 33rd ASEAN Summit and Related Summits brought world leaders together in Singapore to discuss economic and political issues in the region. Chaired by Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, the five-day summit at Suntec Convention Centre featured representatives from China, India, Japan, Republic of Korea, Canada, Australia, the Philippines and the United States, among others. Dignitaries in attendance included Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. With important issues on the agenda, simultaneous interpretation between twelve languages for all 1,300 attendants was a key to success during the five-day event. Making it happen proved challenging for several reasons: First, the multi-purpose convention center provided no permanent interpreter booths or wiring for interpretation hardware. Second, close to 20 meetings between world leaders took place in ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com

separate meeting rooms, with each room and meeting requiring its own interpretation set-up. And third, the temporary interpreting solution needed to be ready within only three days leading up to the summit. Congress Rental Singapore – a member of the Congress Rental Network and official conference partner of Bosch Building Technologies – designed and installed the temporary setup for the ASEAN Summit using a combination of wired DICENTIS, DICENTIS Wireless and DCN solutions from Bosch. Responding to the requirements for each of the four different meeting rooms, the experts deployed a total of 31 DICENTIS Discussion devices with touchscreen, 36 DICENTIS Wireless discussion devices with touchscreen and 33 DCN Conference devices with language selector. For the language interpreters provided by the government institution, 56 DCN Interpreter desks offered a familiar technology platform.

This set-up allowed Congress Rental technicians to equip each meeting between world leaders as the situation required. For instance, higherlevel meetings held in the two plenary meeting rooms on level four of the venue could be supported either by DICENTIS Discussion devices or DICENTIS Wireless discussion devices, depending on the conference day and how much transition time was available to change the set-up for the next meeting. For the fastest build-up and break-down, the best choice proved to be DICENTIS Wireless devices paired with INTEGRUS Pocket receivers and headphones pre-set to the listener’s preferred language. Several of the meetings during the five-day event ran at the same time, so Congress Rental decided to centralize its simultaneous interpretation capabilities. In a central location, 28 temporary booths were set up, each equipped with two DCN Interpreter desks. From there, interpreters delivered live interpretation to delegates in the plenary meeting rooms and summit attendees in the listening room on level 3. More than 1,300 INTEGRUS Pocket receivers were available in the listening room, where attendees could follow proceedings in any of the 12 languages used at the event. At the same time, automatic camera control tracked the interactions between world leaders in the plenary meeting rooms, which attendees could watch live on the installed TV screens on level 3. Throughout the five-day ASEAN Summit, Congress Rental Singapore kept a number of technicians on-site to ensure system performance and hand-over of conference devices between participants several times per day. Via the user control software on the backend, the digital system from Bosch provided Congress Rental Singapore with valuable data on microphone usage and interpreter performance, plus a chance to address potential issues in real time, which was highly valued by the summit managers: “I have continually received nothing

less than complete admiration and the highest appreciation for the way simultaneous interpretation services were managed, and for the performance and quality of the attending Congress Rental staff”, said Chris Jackson, ASEAN, Australia Special Taskforce. Overall, the combination of hands-on support and flexible technology platform proved a success. The over 1,300 participants of the 33rd ASEAN Summit and Related Summits enjoyed a productive event accompanied by seamless interpretation in twelve languages. In addition, the solution was dismantled and ready to be redeployed at the next high-level conference only a few hours later. www.boschbuildingtechnologies.com

disguise supports SACO to Reach New Heights at Burj Khalifa Facade features 17 miles of V-Stick LED video/light fixtures boasting 1,139,144 RGB pixels

SACO Technologies was tasked with designing a permanently mounted system capable of delivering high-resolution video capabilities. They selected the disguise production toolkit integrated with SACO’s own systems to power the LED screen running the length of the world’s tallest building. Burj Khalifa, developed and owned by Emaar Properties Dubai, rises 2,722 feet and 163 stories to pierce the desert skyline. It teamed with SACO on an initiative to light up the skyscraper’s east façade and provide high-resolution video capabilities for what became the ‘Light Up 2018’ New Year’s celebration. The groundbreaking show, viewed by more than one million people on site, earned a Guinness World Record for the largest laser light and sound show on a single building. For the ‘Emaar NYE 2019’ show the scope was even more ambitious. The production extended through to March 2019 and set two more Guinness World Records: the largest LED-illuminated façade, and the tallest LED-illuminated façade. The project required replacing the existing temporary system with a permanently mounted system consisting of the latest in LED technology, video processing and disguise pro range servers, all designed and implemented by SACO. German-based disguise studio and rental partner bright! studios were responsible for designing the NYE show, and the resulting 3-month extension, handling the animation work and the shows creative direction.

and we have unspeakable respect for the installation team we worked with,” concludes Nils. To handle the large-scale nature of the project SACO needed to “maximize the video processor raster” and ensure that the show control component was designed around the SACO and disguise systems. “The functions and features of disguise that were particularly helpful were its 3D mapping tool and live input capability. The ability of the software and hardware to manage very large video files was very helpful, too,” Jonathan explains. Six custom multimedia shows were created by SACO Media Collective as part of the Burj Khalifa daily content. It was important that the visual content related to the building and its architecture, impressing visitors by presenting visual effects to trick the eye and enable the architecture to take on a ‘second skin.’ Whether with colours, lighting effects or 3D deformation, the content was never flat to the surface and used the building’s curves and depth as its canvas. “For the actual content production pipeline, two different templates were created in Adobe After Effects to allow content to fit perfectly our system specifications, SACO’s technology and the building architecture,” explains Marie-Christine Dufort, Creative Director with SACO Media Collective. “Even though the building is really tall and the accurate pixel count was enormous, the templates were easy to use and helped create any type of content very efficiently. A simple 3D model was also used for 3D and architectural effects and animation.” The SACO solution, which utilised its innovative V-Stick technology has 20 times more resolution than the previous system and extends virtually the entire height of the structure. It comprises more than 17 miles of V-Stick LED video/light fixtures and boasts 1,139,144 RGB pixels, mapped and powered by disguise. SACO chose a disguise 2x4pro’s to drive the complex media display. “We’ve been working with disguise since the very beginning and have developed an interesting workflow between our two companies,” says Jonathan Labbee, Executive Vice-President & COO with SACO. “SACO has also developed a processor mapping tool, which directly uploads coordinates to the disguise unit. To help bring the integration to the next level, SACO also collaborated with dandelion + burdock who they have worked with for several years. dandelion + burdock, a disguise studio partner, specialises in custom disguise solutions and developed a workflow and devised content for the project. “Saco’s integration was meticulously planned out, and we managed to deliver an absolutely extreme 29628 vertical pixels,” explains Nils Porrmann, Director at dandelion + burdock. “The size of this undertaking only becomes clear at the site itself. With the bottom-most pixel at 210 feet from the ground even extremely long photographic lenses would only give us a moderate resolution to debug the installation and verify each pixel. It has been a great honour for our studio to work on the creative workflow of the tallest building on earth, ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com

The templates were not only created for the team’s use but also to produce the technical specifications and guidelines for any content creation for Burj Khalifa’s new screen. “Emaar and the Burj Khalifa team wanted the possibility of presenting their own content in the future as well as giving an opportunity to young creators to present work of their own through an open call,” Marie-Christine says. www.disguise.one
