FIRST WORDS November - December 2014
There’s a term that an old friend of mine came up with a long time ago, it’s called the ‘tattoo effect’ or for our Hokkien speaking friends, the ‘ang kong’ effect. Its the feeling you get when you’ve forgotten that you have a tattoo and you walk by a mirror one day and there it is. Staring at you from a patch of skin. It’s a feeling that makes you stop in your tracks and go WOW. For those without tattoos, I liken the feeling to noticing a feature of something that you had forgotten just how awesome it was. It can be your smile, a new pair of shoes or even a new luminaire that can produce a-ma-zeing effects like the new BMFL from Robe. With the Asian leg of the tour completed, the industry seems to be thoroughly impressed and skeptical at the same time. While able to produce a powerful 250,000 lux @ 5m, the average lamp life for the fixture varies between 500 – 750 hours, so both a hit and a miss? We were at the official launch in Singapore (page 21) and we were treated to the various effects and gobos, some quite stunning along with a powerful beam. It ain’t called the Bright Multi-Functional Luminaire for nothing.. The last quarter of every year is always a whirlwind when it comes to the South-Asian entertainment industry. Despite all the hustle and bustle that always goes on, it’s comforting to know that the industry hasn’t forgotten its human touch. In the past few months, the team has been running around in several different countries to attend all the networking dinners and meet-up sessions that the industry has to offer. First off, thank you to everyone for inviting us and secondly, keep em’ coming!

CAN Gets Busy With Midas
Karan Kathuria and B Sirajudeen of Music Group
SINGAPORE: Consolidated Audio Networks Pte Ltd (CAN) has been busy since taking over distributorship of Midas in Singapore as of June 2014. To get into the groove, Mark Gerard Albers, Eddie Chng and Chad Batchelor travelled to the Music Group office to get better acquainted with the Midas consoles as well as to earn their local Midas Tech Support certification. “With the proper training, we are now able to support our local customers and provide the right solution for the desired application. In addition we will be able to help them troubleshoot problems as well as educate our users on the finer points of the consoles,” said Chad Batchelor. Music Group's APAC Tech Support, Khiew Chung Wah added, “The training provided will help our distributors be more knowledgeable about Networking, System Configuration and Troubleshooting which are essential for growing the brand.” As a first step, CAN organised an open house in September in collaboration with SAE Singapore and with support from The Music Group. Two separate sessions were organised with one session concentrating on the Midas PRO series and the other was an introduction to the new M32 console. Both sessions were repeated on the day, as CAN had to cater for an amazing 161 attendees which included freelance sound engineers, students from ITE and Polytechnics, Church staff, Arts Schools, MBS Tech crew and other AV professionals. Faisal Diab, from Marina Bay Sands comments, “It was a great introduction to the M32 and its comparison to the PRO series. We love the pre-amps, delay compensation and the MCA feature on the PRO series. It was also great to hear audio
guys from different backgrounds sharing their experience and how they would use the different consoles for different applications. It was certainly a good opportunity to learn more about the products.” Steven Sanjaya From New Life Community Church who had just invested in an M32 adds, "It was very eye opening and informative session. I really liked how the Midas boards were placed around the location for attendees to have a feel for them. I also really like the feature where I can fiddle with the playback board. It is an awesome feature which has enabled me to use the Midas M32 board better. I am indeed very happy with the choice I've made.” Khiew of Music Group was pleased with the turnout and commented, "Moving forward with the Midas Open House which was in collaboration with SAE, we look forward to many more trainings and seminars with them to also help enhance their students knowledge with technology. This has also brought us into a strong partnership with SAE.”
Consoles were so highly recommended from his sound crew as well as the part time sound engineers with regards to its sound quality that it was a very simple decision to make. In addition, The Production People (TPP) added a M32 to their inventory. “As we are an existing Midas user with a PRO2 and PRO2C in inventory, I was pleasantly surprised at the build quality of the "entry-level" M32. The features and compatibility with our existing DL251 and DL153 IO boxes, coupled with the ease of use, and of course, the legendary audio quality of Midas consoles - surprisingly still retained in the M32, made it a no-brainer for us to expand the Midas eco-system in our company to include the M32. As time goes by, I am sure a few more M32s will join the one we have just purchased,” said Sheldon Gooi, owner of TPP. www.can.sg
To add the icing on the cake, CAN also recently closed sales of the Midas consoles. Monster AV, purchased a Midas PRO2 to add to their audio inventory. Monster AV's Managing Director, Adam, stated that the Midas

(L-R) Isaac Eng, Sales Manager for Coda Audio with Joel Lee, Yamaha's Technical Marketing Support for PA Sales & Marketing and Yamaha's Technical Support Engineer, Randel Laureta
SINGAPORE: Based off the demand for practical sessions, Yamaha Music Asia recently hosted a Digital Audio Networking Workshop based on Audinate's DANTE Network. Held at the company's Singapore office, over 50 local integrators, consultants and professional users attended the full-day workshop. Joel Lee, Yamaha's Technical Marketing Support for PA Sales & Marketing conducted the workshop and covered exactly what Dante networking is about and its capabilities. Getting into the finer technical details of Dante, Joel also spoke about different scenarios where aspects of DANTE such as the signal transmission methods are able to cater to the specific needs of each user. “Many of our clients already utilise the DANTE network but they didn't have the in-depth knowledge needed to take full advantage of the system. Hopefully, we helped them understand DANTE a bit better, so that when they use it on their own, they have a new outlook,” stated Yamaha's Technical Support Engineer,
Randel Laureta who assisted Joel in the day's activities. Held in partnership with Coda Group, distributors of Aviom mixers, Joel presented examples of how users could use the Yamaha CL/QL series of consoles in tandem with Aviom products such as the new A360 Personal mixer, via a DANTE network. Isaac Eng, Sales Manager for Coda Audio was also present to showcase the mixers and support the workshop. He commented, “This is the first time we have collaborated on such a big scale. We have done demos in the past, but never to this scale. It was interesting to show the group the simplicity of connection and the usability of the DANTE network can affect the work-flow on Aviom mixers in a positive way.” “We knew from the beginning that there was a high interest to learn more about DANTE but we didn't expect such a large turnout. In the future, we might have the same workshop, but with smaller groups to allow time for more hands-on sessions. Today turned out so much better than I expected and I hope to conduct something similar in the future but with more products!” Joel concluded. Users of Yamaha consoles are encouraged to visit the Yamaha Music Asia website or contact the team to be kept updated with the various workshops and seminars being held in 2015. sg.yamaha.com

PM Center Invests In W-DMX THAILAND: W-DMX by Wireless Solution Sweden AB is now a hot commodity in Bangkok, Thailand, as shown from the support garnered by premier rental house, PM Center Co. Ltd. The company recently invested in 24 units of W-DMX BlackBox F-1, F-2 and R-512 for their rental division. PM Center has a reputation for offering highquality professional equipment in Bangkok and serving premium clients and projects around Thailand. The W-DMX equipment in their stock is used to light up the famous PATTAYA sign on the hill overlooking the Pattaya Bay. Mr. Karin of PM Center said, “On the Pattaya sign, W-DMX works very well without any problem. So “faaaar”, and so good as it worked flawless for over 700 meters with standard antenna.” Wireless Solution delivered the equipment in late August and on Monday the 1st of September, Wireless Solution representative Ben Darrington was on site at the PM Center office in Bangkok and did in-depth training in using W-DMX technology for longer distances and in situations where the spectrum is
heavily used, as in exhibitions, for example. “One of the reasons for choosing W-DMX as a partner for PM Center was that we offer dual band function,” said Darrington, “In Thailand, it is common that the police and military are jamming the 2.4GHz frequency, so W-DMX allows users the possibility to switch to 5.8GHz, which is perfect as the jammers don't work in this higher band.” Niclas Arvidsson, CEO of Wireless Solution stated, “Bangkok is a thriving city with many possibilities for W-DMX. PM Center is on the pulse of many exciting projects and we’re happy to be teamed up with them.” www.wirelessdmx.com www.pmcenter.co.th

ETC 2014 LDI Student Sponsorship Recipients INTERNATIONAL: As a global leader in lighting and rigging technology, ETC has committed to mentoring students who have an interest in lighting and stage technology. One way the company achieves this is through its annual LDI Student Sponsorship, where a select group of students are awarded an all-expense-paid trip to the LDI trade show as a way to help launch their careers. In its 15th year, the Sponsorship allowed students to go the behind the scenes with ETC, to learn about the latest technologies, and to network with some of the industry’s key figures. The Sponsorship also pairs the students with industry luminaries who serve as mentors, offering advice, inspiration and encouragement as they transition into the working world. The winner's of this the 2014 LDI Student Sponsorship include students who are earning their master of fine arts in lighting design; theatre and drama with a lighting
design emphasis and bachelor of science in Theatre Design and Production. Reaching out globally, Minghan Shi, an international Sponsorship recipient, holds a bachelor degree in lighting design from the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts, where he earned several outstanding student awards. He is currently earning a master degree in stage and lighting design at the Beijing Dance Academy. ETC has also been a major benefactor of the Gilbert V. Hemsley Jr. Internship in Lighting, a program designed for young lighting designers to gain experience working with the Lincoln Center Festival, the New York City Opera and the New York City Ballet. The scholarship is named for the late Gilbert Hemsley, a prominent Broadway lighting designer and revered University of Wisconsin-Madison professor. ETC’s contribution to the scholarship is fitting homage to Hemsley, who mentored Fred Foster when the future ETC leader was a student himself back in the 70’s.
The brand also has a corporate philanthropy program where schools, houses of worship, community theatres and other venues can apply for financial or in-kind grants of ETC equipment. A group of ETC employees meets semi-annually to choose the groups who will receive the grants. This way, ETC can give students and other end-users the opportunity to get experience with ETC equipment that they otherwise wouldn’t have access to. www.etcconnect.com

Robe BMFL Tour Hits Singapore The BMFL Spot produces a powerful 250,000 lux at 5m, a feat that is considered unique to the fixture and no others on the market. Held at the Singapore Resorts World Theatre and organised together with distributor for Singapore and Malaysia, Lighting & Sound Distribution, the full effect of the BMFL were presented in a 1 hour showcase.
SINGAPORE: After its massive global launch on-line that was watched by nearly 11,000 people, ROBE's BMFL tour landed in Singapore and E-Tech Asia was privileged to witness the fixture in action. The Bright Multi-Functional Luminaire – BMFL – is a unique signature Spot that is massively bright, lightweight for its intensity and incredibly versatile. “We believe this is the best product on the market that comes with the best package. It is something the market needs,” declared Josef Valchar, CEO of ROBE lighting.
The team from Anolis, architectural lighting division of ROBE were on hand as well and opened the launch with their recent projects and best selling products. This was followed by Josef who showcased other popular ROBE products such as the Robin POINTE and PARFECT 100 before moving on to the main attraction. The BMFL is equipped with 2 x colour wheels which include filters that can be utilised to adjust colour temperature and improve the CRI of the white output in aging lamps. There are also 2 x rotating gobo wheels – each with six slot & lock gobo positions. The intense colours along with the impressive gobos were proudly displayed and explained by Josef.
According to the technical specifications, the BMFL average lamp life varies between 500 hours @ 1700 W and 750 hours @ 1500W/1200W. This was considered a concern for some attendees but was overshadowed by the intensity and luminosity of the Spot. The presentation concluded with representatives from Expo AV-InSync and Showmakers Pte Ltd, consistent supporters of ROBE products being presented with Letters of Appreciation. On hand to receive the commendations were Managing Director of Expo AV-InSync, Gerard Rodrigues and Louis Wong, Technical Director at Showmakers Pte Ltd (Pictured). Jon Hammond Jams With Electro-Voice @ AMAC
AUSTRALIA: The music products industry gathered again on Queensland’s Gold Coast for professional development sessions and a two-day trade show. Almost 500 professionals, covering a range of Australian music industry suppliers and retailers, took part at the Australian Music Association Convention (AMAC) which was held in the ever-popular Jupiters Casino. The convention featured a number of notable key speakers and accomplished musicians to keep attendees educated as well as entertained. Bosch Communications Systems, a regular at AMAC, exhibited the latest products from the Electro-Voice and Dynacord brands including EV’s ZLX, ELX and ETX Powered Loudspeaker families, and Dynacord’s TS Vertical Array Cabinets, the tiny but feature-packed PM 502 Powered Mixer, and the versatile AXM 12A Coaxial Powered Monitor with onboard DSP. For the first time in EV’s history, the brand had three “best-in-class” loudspeaker families
on display covering entry-level through to pro-audio markets. ZLX loudspeakers are the number one selling powered speakers in the American market and have won Best of Show at NAMM 2013. The 2000 W ETX powered loudspeakers have been labelled as the most advanced product in its price range and have won Best of Show at NAMM 2014. Sitting in between is the ever-popular ELX range which represents a high-quality sound system at a mid-range price. The ETX loudspeaker display drew a lot of attention during the show, including that of Jon Hammond, one of the finest B3 players in the world. Jon reminisced about his first experience with EV speakers back in 1964, when he installed EV SRO speakers in a Fender Band-Master, partially visible in the image below. “I have a particular fondness for EV speakers. My very first pro amplifier was a 1964 blonde Fender Band-Master in which I installed the white EV SRO Speakers. Yes, I lugged that 2 x 12 speaker box around everywhere and it was impossible to blow it up - my whole band would plug in to it, we thought in those days because the amp was called Band-Master that the whole band should plug in to it, bass and all - no problem and it was loud and clear!”
After swapping a few stories Jon was curious to see how his Hammond Sk1 would sound with the ETX loudspeakers. Following a quick connection via a Dynacord PowerMate 600, Jon belted a few tunes just before the close of day one of the exhibition. He promised to come back the following day with a jazz guitarist who turned out to be Chris Connolly, a well-known figure in the audio and music products industry. While setting up for the jam session Simon Ert, a jazz percussionist representing Gretsch drums on the neighbouring stand, volunteered to complete the trio. What followed was half an hour of cool jazz tunes and sweet sound. “I love coming to the AMAC shows, in just a few years I have forged some lasting friendships and am fortunate enough to meet some really outstanding musicians” said Jon. “The timing was perfect to have a session like that what we did - thank you so much for accommodating us with the superb EV powered speakers. I heard from friends who were all the way across the hall that they could hear us clear as a bell. It was so much fun, that’s the kind of thing I live for and only happens in a special place and people such as the EV stand at AMAC!” Scan the QR Code to check out Jon's performance: www.electrovoice.com

Australian Dance Theatre Turns To An LED Solution “So wherever a performer moves, you can drop out the background information so the projected light only goes where the performer goes,” explained lighting designer Damien Cooper. “It’s like the perfect followspot.”
Photography © Chris Herzfeld Camlight Productions
AUSTRALIA: In his role as Thinker in Residence at Deakin University Motion Lab, Garry Stewart created Multiverse, a new type of audience experience where visually stunning 3D graphics share the stage with three dancers from Australian Dance Theatre. The production is one of the first 3D performances to be created by an Australian dance company. Viewed through 3D glasses, Multiverse is an extraordinary new work that combines the power of live dance with the wonder of 3D graphics from one of the great innovators of Australian dance. Multiverse also uses infra-red technology; an infra-red camera follows the movements of the dancers and an interactive computerised system responds to the data collected. This enables sound, video, and lighting to respond live to the actions of the dancer.
Traditional tungsten stage lighting tends to disrupt the infrared signals and so Damien turned to LED lighting including 24 x ETC Source 4 LED Lustr+ profiles, and 10 x Vari-lite VLX LED washes. The rig is fairly simple as ADT sets ups on the day of the performance whilst on tour. “We try to make the rigs as easy to tour as possible which usually means not using any of the venue’s gear,” said Damien. “You can get this rig up in ninety minutes. There are six booms preloaded with four ETC Source 4 LED Lustr+ profiles per boom.” Damien noted that on all 3D shows he has seen, the lighting tends to make the cast stand out from the 3D show and so he was keen to ensure that the performers looked like they were truly immersed in the 3D show. “I needed an LED lamp that could cut off the floor and the ETC Source 4 LED Lustr+ profile has a shutter system to enable this,”
commented Damien. “I found that they change colour really well, in fact they have some extraordinary colours and they are bright. Initially I was concerned with their brightness because the 3D glasses worn by the audience cut output by 30% so I put four fixtures on each boom thinking it was best to overdo it. However, we ended up running the lamps at between 20%-40% for most of the show! I was really impressed by their brightness and would have no hesitation using them on a larger stage.” Damien was equally impressed with the Vari-lite VLX LED wash which offers stunning colours and intensity, multi-year source life and high reliability and low energy consumption.
“I first used the VLX on Stormboy but only because that’s what the venue had and I was trying to save money,” admitted Damien. “I was really impressed by them, they are a great light. Most LED fixtures have a bottom end dimming curve problem but that’s pretty much fine with the VLX. The VLX have a cleaner field beam, better colours and colour mixing than all the discharge moving heads. Also, you don’t have to spend heaps of time balancing out your moving lights. The VLX made the storm sequence’s come alive.” www.jands.com.au

Fine Art Opens 2014 YOG Ceremony CHINA: The Youth Olympic Games (YOG) was the second largest event hosted in China, with 204 countries and nearly 4000 athletes participating. Fine Art was on hand to contribute up to 2000 pieces of its lighting fixtures for the opening ceremony making the brand the largest stage lighting supplier for the ceremony. Produced by Chen Weiya, who was the Executive Director of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the opening ceremony lasted about 90 minutes and was divided into three chapters to show the main theme of “Share Youth, Create Dream”. In the true spirit of the YOG, the show got off to a lively start and remained that way throughout the extravaganza, which was tailored to appeal to young people and to demonstrate the youthful vitality and spirit of the Games. There were 4,000 performers in total, most of whom were young students from Chinese universities. High-tech floor projections and mega sized television virtual technology together with impressive stage lighting efforts not only
helped expand the acting space of the many performers but created strong visual impact for the audience watching at the stadium and from their television screens at home. Fine Art’s 1500 and 2000 light series were used to elevate the overall visual experience of the ceremony, with their cutting and image forming, CMY and CTO functions illuminating the stage with vivid colours. It was reported that most stage lighting equipment for the 2008 Beiijng Olympic Games was made up of European brands, but Chinese brands were used for this year’s
YOG. This is positive indication of the rising quality of Chinese lighting products and is truly a milestone for the stage lighting industry in China. SGM’s Peter Johansen and Mark Brown of Eclipse Group seal the deal.
UAE: Dubai-based technical service specialists, the Eclipse Group, run a programme of continuous investment to keep their inventory of lighting, sound and video solutions at the frontier. Recently they made their first investment in SGM’s new LED technology with the purchase of 40 x P-5 low profile, high output LED Washlights from territorial distributors TechnoPro, having earlier fielded 120 of the fixtures at the inauguration of a major lighting festival in Dubai. This was all the proof that Eclipse founder and CEO, Mark Brown needed, although he and his technical team also undertook a critical evaluation against another industry standard architectural colour changer. “The result was like chalk and cheese,” he said. “The P-5 just blew away the competition. In particular the quality of the red [diode] was hugely impressive.” With its 44 x RGBW 10W LEDs creating a high luminous output, the P-5 boasts an efficacy of 51.2 lm/W combined with a flicker free operation and IP65 rating, making it suitable for any application, while interchangeable 15, 21 and 43° lens
kits further add to its versatility. Apart from the large variety of saturated colours that can be created due to the RGBW, the high-performance LEDs produce a very bright and pure white, which provides a full palette of pastel colours. “When we saw the P-5s working for the first time we immediately loved them and wanted to invest in our own,” confirms Mark Brown. “We have principally bought these for colour washing buildings and what we were really looking for was power and high output.” Since then, Eclipse have used the lights regularly. Most recently to illuminate The Football Five’s World Championships (F5WC) indoor football championship at Dubai World Trade Centre - a global initiative to select talented amateur football players through regional 5-a-side qualifying rounds to then compete in the Dubai 2015 finals. “This was both our first purchase from SGM and from TechnoPro and we have not only been impressed with the products themselves but also the support we have received.” sgmlight.com

The P.A People Run Event Comms For Iconic Marathon in zoning and balancing the system while improving the overall sound quality.
AUSTRALIA: The Sun-Herald City2Surf presented by Westpac is not just Sydney's favourite sporting event, it is the world's largest run with over 80,000 registered participants each year. With over 70,000 runners crossing the startline in 2014, organizers Fairfax Media Events expertly handles the logistical challenge of organising and corralling participants spread from the Sydney War Memorial to Martin Place pedestrian mall. To assist the event organization, The P.A. People once again supplied and installed the Start and Finish Line PA systems.
Setting up a PA that covers nearly 2.5km of Sydney and Bondi streets in itself was a logistical challenge. Designing a flexible system that would both pump out Redfoo’s start line mix and provide a distributed P.A. for information and health safety announcements without waking up the everincreasing number of people who live in the city proved to be the biggest hurdle. To help make it happen, this P.A. team utilised a Yamaha Dante audio networking solution to distribute the program audio from the control position to the amplifier locations. This allowed greater flexibility
“Our approach to these events has grown and developed over the years and 2014 was no exception; continuing design improvements were implemented to further enhance the level of production and interaction. This methodology ensures that we deliver improved production quality each year for the event organisers, so the participants walk away at the end of the day - happy and looking forward to next year’s event” said Travis Henry, Manager - Event Communications. Over the last few years the demands placed on the audio system for the City 2 Surf have increased. This year’s move to a digital transport system represents just another step in continuous improvement that delivers additional value to their clients. www.papeople.com

Neumann Reissues Legendary U47 fet Condenser Microphone
EY A.LEDA B-
E Series
UAE: The 1960s and 1970s are considered to be one of the most innovative periods in the history of music. An icon that was decisive in helping to shape the sound of that era is the Neumann U47 fet. As the transistorized successor of the U47, it permitted the processing of very high sound pressure levels for the first time, for instance allowing positioning directly in front of loud amps. Due to this feature, and the capsule sound derived from its famous tube-based predecessor, the U47 fet contributed to many legendary recordings of the time. The list of renowned artists who have created musical masterpieces with the sound of the U 47fet – include AC/DC, Kate Bush, Bruce Springsteen, and later R.E.M, the Pretenders, a-ha, Dire Straits, Metallica, Michael Bublé and many others. Now the U 47fet is back in the form of a collectors edition. For the new “Collectors Edition U47 fet”, Neumann has resumed production of this classic mic, according to the original production documents and schematics. The Collectors Edition is supplied with a high-quality wooden case with special packaging, and an individual certificate with the serial number of the microphone.
In terms of technical design, the U 47 fet is a condenser microphone with a cardioid directional characteristic and fet 80 circuit technology. Among other things this technology, also used in the U87, is characterized particularly by a wide dynamic range. The K47, already employed in the U47, is a double large-diaphragm capsule with a slight boost in the range above 2 kHz. If required, a switchable low-cut filter raises the lower cut-off frequency electronically from 40 Hz to 140 Hz, and switchable attenuation can reduce transmission levels by 10 dB. In addition, to prevent overloading of the connected preamp, the output signal can be reduced by 6 dB via a switch on the bottom of the microphone. Wolfgang Fraissinet, President of Neumann.Berlin, explains: “Today many new musical currents are defining themselves through the possibilities of digital production technology. The relaunch of the U 47 fet now provides the opportunity of using epoch-making technologies from different decades side by side. Vintage sound meets the modern world – providing ideal conditions for the realization of new creative soundscapes.” www.u47fet.neumann.com

EXHIBITION REVIEW November - December 2014
Roaring Success for Prolight + Sound Shanghai 2014
Dates: 8-11 Oct 2014 Venue: Shanghai New International Expo Centre Hall, China Gross Area: 35,000 sqm No. of attendees: 24,017 Number of exhibitors: 500 Web: www.prolightsound.com Prolight + Sound Shanghai wrapped up its 12th show on 11 October, where more than 500 brands and companies from 18 countries and regions were showcased to an impressive crowd of 24,017. In addition to a host of new product launches, the vibe at the show was relatively positive with a renewed confidence for international and local exhibitors alike.
From The Show Floor For the first time, Phoenix Audio International (HK) Ltd rolled out the latest from UK audio brand Funktion-One, including the Resolution 2 – an entirely horn-loaded, surprisingly compact, full range loudspeaker enclosure.
“We chose to make this important announcement at Prolight + Sound Shanghai because it is one of the industry’s important events of the year. We can present our new development to all of our existing and potential customers and let them experience our new products through live demonstrations,” shared Kay Ho, Marketing Manager of Phoenix Audio.
Featuring the most advanced technology on Class D power-stages, with an internal modular structure and channel-independent SMPS power supplies, the Power Plant series brings seamless benefits delivering an unprecedented sound performance with an enormous power density reaching up to 20,000W on a single amplifier unit.
At the booth, the VENUE S3L-X from AVID proved to be a crowd favourite due to its highly scalable, Ethernet AVB-networked modular system that enables you to mix and record live shows with incredible efficiency – it truly represents a new paradigm in smallto medium-format mixing. Also on display was the new compact AX2065 line-array module from Proel, which impressed visitors that thronged the show floor with its audio prowess. Reinventing the concept of high-density multi-channel power amplifiers, SAE Audio was on site to introduce their new Class D amplifiers, the Power Plant series.
Josep with the Power Plant series
Josep Maria Sans, Market Development Manager at SAE Audio, enthused, “Until now, we do not have the technology to tackle Class-Ds; which is on a completely different league of its own. In Classes A, B and AB, the problem is lack of efficiency. With Class-D, it offers more power with less weight than ever before. We're really proud of our class-D amplifiers – they really produce good sound quality.” Along with that, SAE also showcased the Voice 6000 power amplifier, which is the most cost-effective amplifier specifically designed for the KTV industry.
The team at SAE Audio
Over at Guangzhou Winsound AV Technology Co. Ltd.'s booth, the Midas PRO X console, garnered a lot of hype from the crowd.

lighting and ambience provided on the show floor.
Donned as “the touring engineer's dream console,” the PRO X features up to 168 simultaneous inputs and is equipped with the new Neutron audio system engine. There are up to 800 audio channels, which can be routed on a point-to-point basis or in and out of the console for mixing. “This is quite incredible given that the PRO X measures less than 1.5 metres wide. The ability to pack this much processing power into such a small footprint is definitely something! It is becoming a hot favourite with rental and staging companies who often encounter issues like space constraints,” shared a representative at Winsound. In similar fashion, first time exhibitor, Beijing Pacific Budee Technology Development Co Ltd reared in the crowd with their popular ETX series by Electro-Voice. A versatile high-end choice for live entertainment venues, rental companies, pro musicians and DJs, and installed sound, the ETX Powered Loudspeakers family features: three two-way models (10-inch, 12-inch and 15-inch, all with a precision HF titanium compression driver), a three-way model (15inch with a 6.5-inch MF driver and a precision HF titanium compression driver) and two subs (15-inch and 18-inch drivers). Continuing the successful launch last year, Tobias Gremmler once again installed the Dome Projection at this year's show with a new element moving robot. The 180-degree projection screen showed 3D images where audience could interact with the dome. Together with the video walls and WeRobots, visitors were able to experience first-hand, the cutting-edge design and technology innovation; further enhanced by the music,
The New Media Design and Application Forum, Lighting and Visual Design for TV Production Seminar, Stage Art Design and Technology Forum, as well as Acoustics Technology Forum were among the highlights of the show as industry heavyweights came together to share their experience and knowledge with the attendees. Outdoors, the Concert Sound Arena set the mood for the trade show with a series of line array demonstrations featuring brands Audiocenter, Clair Bros, CPL, FS Audio, KS, KV2, Proel, Real Sound, SAE, TW AUDiO and ZSOUND – a feast for the ears, indeed!
A Premier Exhibition Indeed, Prolight + Sound Shanghai reaffirmed its role as the go-to platform for local Chinese lighting and audio manufacturers. The broad variety of pro audio and lighting products, coupled with innovative fringe events are what seemed to allure visitors and international brands to keep coming back for more! The next show will be held 14 – 17 October 2015.

EXHIBITION REVIEW November - December 2014
PALMM PHILIPPINES: Industry In High Spirits by Thomas Richard Prakasam
This year was the 14th edition of PALMM Philippines. The show was held under the Systems Integration Philippines banner together with other exhibitions where some, frankly, were not related. This is not something new and many visitors have come to expect it. The other unfortunate thing that was a major bugbear during the show was the blaring audio coming from all directions. In the later part of the afternoon especially, it did not help create a conducive environment for discussions. This was good news for the many F&B outlets within the area because if you wanted to have a serious conversation, you needed to have it outside the hall. Bad news for exhibitors though, because this led to missed opportunities for potential customers who were visiting the stands.
Most of the solutions shown were, of course launched at the international exhibitions but nevertheless, PALMM Philippines provided the opportunity for many to touch, see and experience the solutions personally. There was a strong feel-good atmosphere at the exhibition and it no doubt stemmed from the fact that there are many projects ongoing and many coming up. Case in point, a number of casinos are slated to open within the country in the next couple of years. There is also a growing group of young people with money to spend. This in part due to the many BPOs springing up in the country, offering great employment opportunities. From all accounts, the Philippines economy has fared much better than its regional neighbours over this past year. There has
been some form of stability with the current government and this is reflected in the growing confidence from Multi-National Companies and the World's economic bodies about the Philippines economy. In short, the industry is in high spirits and many hope that this will continue for the next few years, at least. Interestingly, with the growth in projects, some in the industry have pointed out that many companies were not ready for the sudden growth spurt. This has resulted in companies needing to bring in expertise and consultants from the outside to cope with the demand which has resulted in inflated costs. This situation is not expected to go away anytime soon, hence, it is something that the industry has to cope with for now.
Seen and Heard @ PALMM Philippines Now, there seems to be a shift in their thinking as they begin to understand how digital advertisements can be used to create branding loyalty and awareness, especially in relation to lifestyle products. “Right now we are in the threshold and we believe that digital communication will become a common platform soon.”
LG together with their distributor Iontech, took the opportunity to conduct a seminar during the exhibition. Their solutions were also showcased on the exhibition floor. According to the LG executives at the seminar, the Philippines market has shown substantial growth in market share and they expect their business to grow a further 30 40% in the coming years.
AVOLUTION further highlighted the growing interest in the display segment. According to Loui Dayaon, Sales & Marketing Manager of AVOLUTION, advertisers were sceptical five years ago about digital advertisements.
Mipro. Mipro's Eugene Chen highlighted that ForeRunner was a deserved winner. “We are pleased to work with a company that, in terms of their performance, sales and support has such strong technical fundamentals.”
The Vertek Professional team with a dbTechnologies member Mario of Forerunner with the 2013 Outstanding Distributor award presented by Eugene of Mipro
ForeRunner Technology only participates in PALMM Philippines every 4 years and the company's President, Mario Benipayo, was pleasantly surprised with the turnout at the exhibition. Mario also highlighted that the Rental & Staging business in the Philippines is growing in strength. ForeRunner offers a full range of audio solutions that enables Rental & Staging companies to start from a basic inventory and expand when the time is right. According to Mario, the DJ market is also showing good potential. Incidentally, ForeRunner Technology was awarded the 2013 Outstanding Distributor award by
Vertek Professional which was previously a rental only business, expanded into the installation segment in 2012 and has not looked back since. The company has been busy with installations for clubs, schools and churches and will soon be installing a large dBTechnologies system for a club in Makati. The country's positive climate has enabled the company to quickly establish itself within the installation segment. Stagecraft's Francisco Zabala feels that another reason for the growth is due to the market maturing thus opening itself to best technology and world class solutions. “Broadcasters, theatres, hotels, churches – they have embraced the very best in

technology,” said Zabala. He is positive about the business for the coming years.
The Dataton team participating for the first time in PALMM Philippines
Allan Chua of OWM with Franco of DTS
Raymund with his Electro System team members and principals
Raymund Pascual of Electro Systems highlighted to us that the Philippines GDP has been growing at 7%. A number of government infrastructure projects have also been approved which should augur well for overall developments. “Going Green is about to be big as well. We believe this will drive the AV business as we are able to provide green solutions including Building Management Systems. Our technology partners drive the technology and we provide the local knowledge and drive the business, which makes for a good partnership,” said Raymund.
Menze of Prolyte with Joel of Stagging Riggers
Keeping with the positive feeling, Allan Chua, President of One World Music noted that end-users have become more conscious and aware of brands and new technology. “They have become more quality conscious which helps. Both fixed and Rental & Staging businesses are doing well and we feel it can only get better.”
The EVI team with Matthias Bohm GM of Robert Bosch Inc. Security Systems Philippines (right, back row) and Patrick Hau (beside Matthias) of Robert Bosch (SEA).
EVI used the show to launch the EV ETX speakers. The portable powered speakers are a versatile high-end choice for live entertainment venues, rental companies, pro musicians and DJs, and installed sound. Lito of EVI also concurred with what everyone else at the exhibition had told us – that the Philippines AV market is experiencing an up-trend and that there is an appreciation of quality brand solutions.
Menze of Prolyte concurred that their business has been growing in tandem with the Philippines economy. “New companies are committing to chain hoists and truss as there is a clear trend here that companies are now looking for quality and service, as many of them become more aware of safety issues.”
Suffice to say that, though the exhibition may not meet the expected international standards of audio control, it still seems to be the meeting point for many in the industry to showcase their latest solutions and network with fellow industry professionals.

Going Green With ETC
As one of the most highly sought after brands on the market, Electronic Theatre Controls (ETC) has maintained its competitive edge while being friendly to the environment. Following the company’s massive success at PALM Expo China 2014, Matt Amendariz-Kerr, ETC’s Entertainment Market Manager, Wendy Orfan, Promotions & Advertising Manager at ETC and David Law, Sales Manager at ETC Asia share the secret to success behind ETC products.
What are some of the main benefits of using ETC products? David: ETC strives not only to build the highest quality products but we also focus a lot of our efforts to design innovative products that can meet the challenge of technological changes in time, while keeping a strong commitment to have them backward compatible. For example, our Source Four LED can work seamlessly with the Source Four conventional tungsten fixtures; and our Sensor dimming systems have evolved to Sensor 3 now with the introduction of Thru-Power modules enabling effective power control of dimming and solid state lighting. Our product range is very wide, and yet tightly designed with a system concept from lighting consoles, network, dimming to fixtures; and even cross-over from entertainment to architectural applications. All of these benefit a lot to the end users when investing in ETC products.
Product life-cycles have significantly shortened over the years. What strategy does ETC adopt to attain a balance between making product offerings relevant at the point of sale while still achieving a profit?
Matt: One of the side effects of disruptive technology is that when a core technology develops and improves at a fast rate, the pace of product development will also increase. However, it’s our belief that it’s important to develop a product that – even though its components may change – is built for the long haul and designed and engineered properly. That’s because venues
hold onto technology for a very long time even though there may be something newer out on the market. For example, fresnels – old, incandescent, well-worn fresnels – are still hanging in theatres because they’re still useful. At the same time, a lot of people think ‘Why would I buy something now, knowing that something

Brand building is a very timeconsuming and costly process. However, with a good brand, a company can command premium prices and stronger brand loyalty from its customers. Do you agree with this and what have you done to maintain the brand image and prestige ETC? Wendy: ETC’s brand is built on the quality of our products. That philosophy runs through every vein of our company. Building the highest-quality products is ultimately the best way we inspire brand loyalty, as well as reinforce brand reputation. We have customers who have trusted ETC for decades because they know our products are reliable, user-friendly and meet their needs. They also know that we stand behind all of our equipment, providing 24/7 customer and technical support that is unmatched in the industry.

better will come along in two years?’ The simple answer is that if the fixture is still useful today, there’s no reason to think it won’t be useful in five years, even if there’s something brighter and better on the market. The new technology doesn’t suddenly make that particular product useless. The most important aspect of a product is reliability, because a lot of money is invested in each fixture. Hence we strive to ensure our products can withstand the test of time while keeping up with the changes in technology.
ETC emphasizes on being ecofriendly and carbon neutral. How do you think your products or business operations could be adapted accordingly to contribute towards the “Go Green” efforts?
Design (LEED) ratings. From daylightharvesting and motion sensors in architectural-lighting systems, to low-wattage lamps and reduced field-lumen output in Source Four fixtures, ETC's equipment is among the “greenest” on the market. ETC’s headquarters is also green. A Unison Paradigm system is used throughout the building to maximize energy efficiencies. Special software in HVAC equipment regulates energy use during peak hours, helping scale back consumption. The building is air-locked and highly insulated, so warm air doesn’t escape when the heat is on and cool air stays inside when the air conditioning is on. Our receiving dock is also equipped with an air lock to prevent temperature-regulated air loss.
What are ETC's goals for the SouthEast Asian market and how do you intend to achieve these goals? David: ETC Asia will continue to expand into key markets, making an aggressive effort to increase their presence. The latest move to achieve these goals is recruiting a Singaporebased regional sales representative to enhance our coverage in the South East Asian markets. This year we also double our space in the Hong Kong office for the purpose of building a training and demo centre which enables us to provide and conduct more market education activities. www.etcconnect.com
Matt: ETC is committed to fostering a sustainable global environment. ETC adheres to the European Union environmental-safety directive RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances), which regulates chemicals used in electrical and electronic equipment. We exceed compliance with the European Union’s WEEE (Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment) directive – practising proper recycling of all products, including electrical equipment. We also encourage our dealers to recycle used equipment brought in by users or direct the products to approved recycling handlers. We create sustainable products with lower electrical consumption which helps our customers and their buildings achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental

SPECIAL FEATURE November - December 2014
PR Lighting: Focusing on the 'island of potential' -By Ram Bhavanashi
PR Lighting recently hosted in Sri Lanka what was regarded as the island nation’s first ever lighting industry networking event. Held in association with their Lankan partner The Light House, PR Night-Sri Lanka 2014 – as the marketing showcase was called – was successful in bringing together over 70 industry professionals, and saw the launch of four new products from the lighting leader. Straight from Colombo, E-Tech Asia brings you an account: Evening times at Hilton Hotel – the new definition of luxury hospitality in the heart of up-market Colombo – is generically exciting. This is due to the cosmopolitan culture it exudes and the entertainment churned out that usually runs late into the night. The evening of August 21st appeared no different. But as we moved from the lounges into the Ruby Hall, the ambience alone caused us to anticipate a night filled with technotainment (technology-filled entertainment). “Take a few minutes, and you will see…” said Dinusha Perera, Director of Operations at The Light House, the sponsor of the evening. Fondly called Chanaka by industry folks, Dinusha appeared both cool and excited, as the invitees began dropping in rather slowly.
“The industry wakes up as the evening gets thicker,” quipped Lawrence Mao, PR Lighting Sales Manager-South Asia. “After all, this is all about the lighting industry; it’s best seen and felt in the thick of the night.” True enough, as the night wore on, the guests soon filled out the entire hall. The gathering included mainly rental companies, event planners, management firms, musicians, dealers and distributors from across the country. The most prominent included: • Reza Rafiq, Managing Director-CEO of Citrus Events from Colombo • Buddhika A Kumara, Director at Aura Event Solutions (Pvt) Ltd, from Rajagariya
• Sajith Kodikar, Director at Imagine Entertainment (Pvt) Ltd, from Colombo, together with his deputy Dilip Boudara • Dinesh De Silva from Swedish Trading Audio Visual • A R Michael from Silver Star Audio Visual and Even Planners • Ajit Wijeshekara from Antswork There was a significant contingent from India as well. The prominent among them included Deepak Bandari from Millennium Group; Sakshi Jain from Indiabulls; Kunal Gamrao from The Indian Express; and Suneel M Puranik. The night kicked off with Lawrence welcoming the gathering. Which was followed by a small entertainment fare from

a local performer who also doubled-up as the semi-emcee of the evening. With the opening entertainment complete, Lawrence came on to present PR Lighting in as much detail as possible- the lighting major’s genesis and growth through the years; its market focus and positioning; its technology initiatives and thought leadership; its milestone achievements and endeavours. This presentation of competence and commitment, projected on a giant LED screen, made the evening all the more grand and was followed again by the musical fare of the emcee/singer. The beats drums and trumpets were followed by Lawrence’s announcement of global launch of new lighting products and introduction of PR hot sellers to the Lankan market. As part of their global launch, the XR-330 SPOTs and XLED-2007 were received amidst much glee and glitter. Adding to the already raised excitement level, the XR-330 BEAM was shown for the first time to the Sri Lankan market along with quantities of XS1200 Spot and PR Lighting's hot-seller, XR 200 Beam. All of which made dynamic stage impacts while the XLED 2007 Beam, with endless Pan and Tilt, and pixel control in the form of 2-2-2-1, won the crowd over. “This is what we all wanted to see, This is what is required here,” said Rafiq, managing director-CEO of Citrus Events. “The local industry, after all the years of pain and struggles, is now growing. There is a high level of excitement and expectation as well. However, it lacks the expertise and information from where to source what,” he

contributed to the success of the event by putting in their best for the organization and planning of the event. According to Dammika, since they had been successful in bringing together Event Managers, vendors, suppliers, and musical professionals, “..we achieved our purpose.” said. “Through events like this, the industry gets to know what is the latest coming to the market and from whom.” Affirming the enthusiasm, Buddhika of Aura Events noted, “Events like this bring a great value to the local industry. Not only in terms of new product solutions, but also the technical brilliance and the expertise to handle them.” There are four major Rental companies in Sri Lanka and about a dozen medium and sundry entities. However, there is also a growing generation of professionals from musical, rental and staging, and lighting domains which, when combined, produce a whole big matrix of potential for lighting solutions providers.
“The requirement is huge and so is the potential,” said Ajit Wijeshekara.” With programmes like this we get to know what is coming to the market place, and how we can get better and better in our professional pursuits.” Dammika Caldera of The Light House (Pvt) Ltd stated: “I guess we achieved what we wanted. We wanted to bring together the industry people; show them what the international market has to offer and at best, educate them on the need to adopt the best solutions to help them get better.” The Light House not only provided the light and sound for the event but also the giant LED screen, technical support and set-up of the live spot. The local partner and player
Dammika's deputy Chanaka was all the more excited at what seemed to be a big success: “The event was extremely successful and we are impressed with the professionalism of PR Lighting. They were able to provide us with a great platform to network with the key people in our industry over cocktails, while customers showed genuine interest in the new range of products.” Finally, it was for Lawrence Mao to thank The Light House for their support and efforts. “It was their leadership in the industry; professional as well as networking competence that made the event such a big success,” he said. “We always believed in their strengths and that has been proven tonight.”
Judging by the large gathering and excitement it generated among lighting professionals, PR Night-Sri Lanka 2014 was considered a smash hit. Not only did it demonstrate PR Lighting’s focus on the region with new products, it also focused on building of new relationships. E-Tech Asia caught up with Lawrence Mao, PR Lighting’s Sales Manager for South Asia to investigate the company’s focus and purpose in the South Asian region. Excerpts:
Tell us about PR Lighting(PRL), its genesis, evolution through the years, and its current standing in South Asia… Lawrence: PR Lighting Ltd was founded in 1984 in Guangzhou, China, with a focused approach to develop the architectural and entertainment domains. It has grown steadily over the last 30 years with periodical milestone achievements in its own R&D and market successes to emerge as the largest player in China, and one of the majors in Asia and beyond.
The company developed its first moving head in 1990, and its first product-adapted DMX in 1996. By the turn of the century, the company evolved to define the industry standard in China, and within four years, achieved success in international markets. Today, PR products are used in most major international events in over 60 countries in Europe, the Americas and APAC. Our success is not only measured by the value we bring to the customer but also in staying true to our core values: Respect, Trust, Integrity, and Honesty.
Our philosophy is to build deep relationships with our distributors, providing expert advice, service, and marketing support. That being said, in South Asia, PR Lighting has been addressing all the seven countries in the region, and Sri Lanka is a very important market for us. Since I took charge here in 2010, I opened the market to everyone, standing for quality of products and service. Today, we account for as much as 80% of the market.
SPECIAL FEATURE November - December 2014
How many countries in the region does PRL have a strong presence and where are the challenges? Lawrence: We are selling in India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Bangladesh and Nepal. India has been our strongest and biggest market. The other markets like Sri Lanka, Maldives and Bangladesh have been overflowing with huge potential; but they do pose some challenges. These include: lack of awareness towards global dynamics, professional standards and practices as compared to those seen elsewhere. PR intends to use its expertise, quality standards and professional practices to train professionals and build/spread awareness across the industry ranks towards more structured growth. We have already seen some measurable success in that people have evolved to understand and appreciate PR company values and product values. We will continue to pursue our initiatives with renewed focus and energy.
Looking at the Lankan market, where does PRL stand in terms of market share and organizational presence, channel partners etc.? Lawrence: We have been doing business in this country from even before 2010 through some local players. Since I took up the reins in 2010, we have been achieving fairly big success, particularly from 2011 by promoting our new products. We do not see the number of people partnering with us, we see the market in terms of number of rentals, events, studios and theatres. It’s been a very encouraging growth happening for us in all these domains in the region, and we will pursue it.
How about the notion that Sri Lanka had been a troubled state for many years, making it extremely challenging for businesses that form PRL's target domains? Lawrence: I recall, in 2010, I used to notice a gun-wielding soldier standing every 20 meters or so- outside the hotel where I stayed. I guess that was the time the Lanka Government had decided to tame the Tiger(s). From that time, things have started improving, and thus
businesses have begun to blossom again. So has ours. The post-war situation has been an encouraging scenario for us, and probably for many others. I do not see or remember any day now without an event somewhere in the country.
The brand is considered successful in a country where others have supposedly not fared well. How do you explain this? Lawrence: We always keep an eye and ear as close to the market as possible. Once we understand what the market wants, we try providing that particular solution; then complimenting it with good, quality and timely services. This has been the principle PR has adopted, and this is not particular to the Lankan market; it’s the same everywhere else. What perhaps stands out for PR is the seriousness and dedication with which we go about this principle.
What is/has been PRL’s most impactful breakthrough solution in recent times? How has it been taken by Sri Lankan and other neighbouring markets? Lawrence: We are developing opingg the big watt tts/ high power LEDs and new light w ligh ht sources from frrom Osram and Philips. Thesee products are highly higghly appreciated all over the world world. d. For instance, instan nce, for the PR Night Sri Lankaa event, eveent, we used XR 330 Spot, which is a new ew light source from Osram and Philips, creati ting higher light outputs than the normal rmal discharge lamps. We have got several ral other technology initiatives like that.
PRL are known as one ne o off the Chinese manufacturers on rers that rely o n its own R&D. What do yyou ou think has been its biggest contributi trib bution to the South Asian industryy th that hat match// surpass the European brands? an b rands? Lawrence: Setting up ourr own n R&D base itself is a big contributi on butio on by PR - not only for the region, but to to the global industry. This is based sed off the fact that products developed oped here travel the whole world. For or the th he region, it reassures the customers ustom mers about the competence off PRLL and that it stays with them, m, and supports them with quality ity products. That PR products cts have been in use in over 60 countries speaks towardss thee

competence when compared with those from other continents.
Having come this far, what does PRL project on the road-map ahead for the near- and longterm future? Lawrence: One of our company's core values is to succeed together with the customer. Not only for the moment but for the long- , if not, life-term. We do this with the quality services, and promotional campaigns I listed, and compliment that with new breakthrough technology initiatives like developing high power LEDs, and exploring newer market domains like theatrical art venue markets, etc.. As far as my region is concerned, my long term vision and mission is to make PR a lighting star. For the short term, I’m focusing on developing new relationships, and adding more end-users like TV stations, DJs, theatres, and clubs to our database. www.pr-lighting.com

IN PROFILE November - December 2014
The Light House: The name says it all By Ram Bhavanashi
You mentioned the CHOGM event in the Caribbean. How many countries does The Light House operate in?
Dammika: Apart from Sri Lanka, we operate in the Middle East – particularly in Dubai, and Bahrain – Maldives. We are constantly exploring the expansion of our market presence.
Yes, the name probably says it all. A foremost reference to entertainment solutions in Sri Lanka, the Light House dominates the sound and light domains in both indoor and outdoor applications. Playing true to its position, the company intends to spearhead the country’s march into the domain of ‘technotainment’ by means of bringing the best from the world stage. E-Tech Asia pulled off an exclusive with Dammika Caldera, Managing Director of The Light House, to gain a glimpse into the company’s drive. Excerpts:
Tell us about The Light House
Dammika: The Light House is a 16-year-old enterprise founded with a resolve of creating a one-stop destination for all entertainment needs in Sri Lanka. While the journey hasn’t been hassle and hurdle free, there have also been many success stories marking our march to leadership status. We were the proud solution providers to prestigious events in the country like World Youth Conference; first ever International Beach Volley Ball championship; and the CHOGM [Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting], and more. Light House is Sri Lanka’s first and only company to supply systems and solutions to the CHOGM Bidding Event at St. Kitts in the Caribbean Islands in 2011. Held for five consecutive days for back to back events, it’s been the biggest and prideful credential for The Light House. We have the biggest large format line array system in Sri Lanka and it has been our honour to be recommended by artists like Nicole Sheizinger, Taio Cruz, Sean Kingston, Shaggy, Rio, Sasha Lopez, Russel Peters, etc. Today, we cater to as much as 80% of the Sri Lankan market.
its standards by bringing in training and certification programmes as well as exposure to international trends. Our current hosting of PR Night event explains the summary of all this.
How do you see the current industry in Sri Lanka?
While we have pioneered in Yamaha digital consoles, we are also the only players with EAW large format line arrays in the country. We want to use all that expertise towards helping improve the industry standards.
What factors do you see contributes/deters the growth excitement?
Moving forward, we want to tie-up with government as well as multinational firms to get technical personnel and conduct training programmes on lighting, audio, and event management. We want to set-up a school to train aspiring professionals on latest tech trends and products. The Sri Lankan government is already talking to some prestigious institutions from India in this regard and we are looking forward eagerly to having some success in those initiatives.
Dammika: We just came out from a 30-year war that has admittedly deterred the country in many dimensions. We are feeling free and breathing free. Since we are breathing free, we aspire to grow, and that is desire is spreading like wild fire across all domains of Sri Lankan endeavours. We are therefore growing like anything.
Dammika: I’m obviously excited to talk about the positives. Sri Lanka is a free-land now. No threats and no restrictions too. The government is very supportive, and encouraging the industry by all possible means. Many multinationals are stepping in the hospitality industry to boost its fortunes, which indirectly creates opportunities for many others. All these factors contribute in highlighting the immense potential for any business. And of course, the entertainment industry stands to gain from all this. Talking about challenges – the market lacks professionalism; awareness on global dynamics; availability of trained and/or certified professionals. While there has been much excitement surrounding business opportunities, it is highly price-sensitive; and is ruled by unhealthy competition. We are actually concerned that the initial euphoria of the Post-War freedom may lead to unstructured growth.
As a leader, how do you intend to better the situation?
Dammika: That’s a nice one. It’s always been our endeavour to help the industry improve on professional skills, expertise, and best-business practices. We want to help it upgrade itself with the best technology solutions, products and systems coming to the marketplace. We want to contribute to the industry betterment by improving
By when do you hope to achieve some success in this regard?
Dammika: We believe we will have some critical mass for our initiatives in about two years.
Where do you think you are positioned right now? How do you look into immediate future?
Dammika: The Sri Lankan industry is roughly worth 100 million USD right now and we account for about 40 million USD share. We obviously want to increase our share. That we are the largest player, locally, we do not feel a threat of competition but we do not want to be complacent. We need to do more than what we are doing now and looking forward, we want to expand into other countries in the region while consolidating our existing presence.
You mentioned your hosting the PR Night summarizes your endeavours. Do you believe it achieved its purpose?
Dammika: Yes, to a large extent. You’ve seen the excitement among the audiences. We have brought together event managers, vendors and suppliers. They all are impressed with the programme. We hope to continue the momentum. www.thelighthouse.lk

EAW Heats Up The Crowds At Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE Beach Club “Last season the sub arrays were ground stacked and I found that when I had 1500 bodies on the main dance floor, the low end was just not making it far enough to the back sections,” added Field. “So this season I opted to fly the main sub arrays. I lose the ground coupling, but this was a reasonable trade off in order to be able to steer the low frequencies where they are needed when we are full.”

ocated on the desert oasis of Ghantoot Island, at the Golden Tulip Al Jazira Hotel & Resort, Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE is one of the most exhilarating beach clubs in Abu Dhabi. One of the many attractions the beach club offers its guests is an unending line-up of prominent musicians and DJs that perform every weekend during beach season. The other draw is an Eastern Acoustic Works (EAW) sound system that surpasses any other club system in the region. “The owners are passionate about sound and understand that it is the most important thing in a club setting,” explained James Field, system designer, Imagine Audio Visual. “I’ve been involved with Blue Marlin since the beginning. The owners have consistently supported the beach club concept with cutting-edge EAW sound reinforcement systems that rival the competition.” Most recently Field designed a new EAW system featuring KF740 line arrays and SB1002 subwoofers. A rectangular trussing system defines the performance stage with four line arrays – each made up of four KF740 enclosures – hung from each corner of the structure, firing outward. “When the doors opened two years ago, we never guessed that we would end up getting 2000+ party goers on a weekly basis,” explained Field. “By the end of last season, it was obvious that we needed an upgrade to deliver more SPL throughout the venue. I wanted a solution that was designed
Field employed 3 x UX8800 DSPs on the KF740s and SB1002s and one UX3600 for the QX rig in the VIP zone. Lake LM26s handled other fill zones. The simplicity of the temperature and humidity zone controls, which allows Field to punch in the numbers with ease, was particularly useful given it is an outdoor venue. specifically for the purpose rather than just adding in more boxes ad-hoc to the old EAW MQ system. This is why I went with the KF740’s.” The KF740 features dual 62mm voice coil HF compression drivers and dual 8-in Concentric Summation Array (CSA) loaded MF transducers integrated through a common horn that occupies the entire face of the enclosure. The astounding pattern control achieved by this configuration is extended even further (down to 160 Hz) as the MF devices are transitioned to a spaced array of 4 x 2.5'' voice coil 10'' woofers. “The venue has been so successful that we have had to expand the system as the crowd and the artists booked became bigger,” added Field. “We continue to evolve the production value as the venue grows using EAW exclusively.” 2 x subwoofer arrays, this time consisting of 6 x SB1002 subs each, hang from the two corners located closest to the stage. Four more subs are ground stacked four wide in front of the DJ Booth to reinforce the chest thumping bass.
“Most decent club systems will go down to about 30 cycles per second – these are the frequencies that can really, physically move you,” he explained. “With 32 18-inch bass drivers and 64 10-inch low-mid drivers around the dance floor, being driven by amplifiers which can deliver around 250 thousand watts of power in microseconds – the audience can definitely feel the low end.” An impressive rack full 100 channels of Lab Gruppen C series delivers 250 kilowatts of power to all the various zones. Zone control is done in the analog realm with Drawmer DA 6s, which Field likes for their transparency. A large inventory of DJ Equipment including Allen & Heath and Pioneer mixers of various models, as well as Technics SL-1200 and Pioneer CDJ2000NXS Media Players fill out the beach club system. www.eaw.com www.dubainight.com

Creating The Right Atmosphere @ The East Coast Park
T
he East Coast Park is one of Singapore's most popular getaway as it oers over 15km of coastline, lush greenery, and space for the many activities from cycling, roller-blading to canoeing, BBQ pits, camping and more. In 2012, the National Parks Board of Singapore announced plans to re-develop the whole area to provide expanded and improved park facilities as well as better accessibility and connectivity within the park. As part of the re-development, the former Parkland Golf Driving Range (now known as Parkland Green) will feature two sports and retail outlets and eight new dining establishments, complemented with a garden-themed 306-lot car park. A few of the dining establishments have already started
to operate and that includes the Atmosphere Bistro Bar. Atmosphere is built around the concept of seaside dining, and provides a relaxing ambience for consumers to enjoy the breeze while having a meal over drinks. Operating throughout the week, customers can literally enjoy two separate atmospheres at the aptly named bistro. The early part of the operations is meant for a more relaxed dining atmosphere with light music played in the background. After 10pm is when the tempo picks up and the venue is transformed into a bar with more energetic music. Weekends see live soccer games as well as major sporting events being projected as well.
Enabling the vision of the owners to be realised from the technical perspective was Creative Elifestyles Pte Ltd. Robert Adrian Tan, Business Procurement Director at Creative Elifestyles, understood the requirements and proposed an eective setup that met the needs of the Bistro.
The Alphacoustics LT8 Linear column speaker
With the seaside being a main draw, Atmosphere's space is divided into a large outdoor area and a smaller air-conditioned indoor area. To ensure proper audio coverage within the venue, Robert first specified four units of higher-powered Alphacoustics LT8 Linear column speakers that feature ribbon technology for the outdoor space. Each of the 240watts speakers were placed strategically

In addition, a Power Sequencer Controller was put in place. This was deliberately installed by Robert as it cuts the workload of the staff turning each and every equipment on/ off individually and also helps to maintain the equipment in the long run.

to offer audio coverage across the area and are powered with 2 units of QSC GX3 2 channels power amplifier. The indoor space also features 4 x Alphacoustics speakers that are installed onto the ceiling. Due to the smaller space, these are the LT4 Linear column speakers offering 120 watts per speaker and are also driven by 2 units of QSC GX3 power amplifiers. A Samson S Zone multi zone stereo audio mixer works in tandem with a Xilica XP 4080 speaker management system to complete the audio set-up. The bistro bar also features six displays in and around the venue with a projector and a projection wall being a focus point at the outdoor space. A Sony CW275 5100 ANSI lumen WXGA LCD projector was installed for the projection. “The owners wanted to project live sports programmes in a larger format and thus decided on going with a
projector. The location of the wall on which images are being projected can be viewed from almost any angle. The displays on the other hand are generally used to broadcast free-to-air-channels and promotional materials,” said Robert. For the visual solutions, Robert installed a Black Magic Design (BMD) 12 x 12 Smart Video Hub Switcher as well as a BMD Component to SDI convertor for the cable box. 7 units of DataVideo SDI to HDMI Convertor were also employed for the displays and the projector. He explained, “The BMD Smart Video Hub switcher is excellent as it comes in a compact design and offers advanced 6G-SDI connections and it allows you to route any combination of SD, HD and Ultra HD if need be from within the same router.”
Robert Adrian Tan with Chiam Wee Leong
Chiam Wee Leong, one of the partners at Atmosphere Bistro Bar, commented, “Creative Elifestyles was recommended to us and Robert was great. He ensured that the speakers not only offered crisp audio but were also able to aesthetically blend in with our design. The slim speakers are not jarring which helps visually. We are happy with Robert's service as he understood our requirements and delivered accordingly.” www.atmosphere-bistro.com.sg www.creativeelifestyles.com

LTA & Audica Take On Potato Head Folk
Potato Head Folk (FOLK) is the brainchild of PTT Family, the hospitality group behind the internationally acclaimed 'Potato Head Beach Club' in Bali. As PTT Family’s first international venture, Potato Head Folk has been designed to be a home away from home for all types of patrons. To accomplish this, the founders decided that each level in the 4-storey establishment would have its own theme and therefore its own independent audio zone.
As a brand partner of Audica, Quek immediately thought of the slim, discreet wall-mount MICROpoint loudspeakers from the UK brand. With a height of just 24cm (240mm) and width of 8cm (80mm), the MICROpoints' have been softly shaped to merge into the environment. And without the need for additional extension subs, the MICROpoints are still able to provide excellent acoustics so that, no matter where you are in the room, the sound from the main loudspeakers remains coherent and pleasing.
“Music is a fundamental aspect of all of our venues. In fact, it is one of the most important factors. At FOLK, we have 3 different styles of music playing throughout the venue. We want to take our guests through a journey with music, and sound quality was fundamental to this process,” explained Dre Masso, Project Opening Manager. A definite concern was to avoid an audio installation that would clash with the restaurant's décor. To ensure the set-up process and the concurrent installation would be up to FOLK's standards, he engaged the services of Colin Quek, from Loud Technologies Asia (LTA), a local distributor and integrator of premium brands such as, Audac, Elation Professional and Turbosound. “There was a need for sound control [at FOLK] so the placement of speakers had to be carefully thought out. Overall, they wanted a decent SPL without seeing the actual speakers,” explained Quek.
to interact with chefs while placing their orders, the Three Buns Kitchen is an organic community space that opens to all and serves up delicious gourmet burgers, cocktails and home-made sodas. Catering to the 'soul' of the premises, Quek utilised 2 x MICROlines to combat environmental noise. Just slightly larger than the MICROpoints, MICROlines have a dispersion of 120o (Horizontal) by 30o (Vertical) and reach -6dB at 4kHz. It also uses aluminium extrusions with moulded aluminium end-caps, and grilles that are micro-perf steel for acoustic transparency with durability. “We see more and more venues looking for small, unobtrusive speakers that sound good, with a credible low frequency extension, without the need for sub-woofers. Here we have speakersthat are capable of putting out high quality music in a small form so we found exactly what we needed in the Audica loudspeakers,” stated Quek.
This is especially apparent on the second floor, also known as the 'Three Buns Dining Room’. An intimate dining room adorned with hand painted murals and vintage furniture. Between the main dining area and the stairwells, a total of 15 x MICROpoints can be found, providing a smooth transition between levels. However, before even entering the doors of FOLK, guests are greeted with the Three Buns Kitchen on the 1st floor. Set-up for guests
From mellow to hyped up, the 3rd floor 'Studio1939 Lounge Bar' required the same beats as the kitchen. Hence, Quek installed 4 x Audica MICROline wall-mount loudspeakers to take the vibe high enough that it would prepare guests for the restaurants' rooftop experience. In the bohemian oasis that is the Rooftop Garden on the 4th floor, guests are treated to an alfresco experience that carries the vibe of a tropical vacation. The Rooftop Garden presents a stunning view of heritage shop-

houses and modern skyscrapers while guests enjoy a barbecue menu and tiki cocktails. Not needing to worry about aesthetics, since all eyes are on the view, Quek installed 4 x One Systems 106IM loudspeakers. The 106IM delivers IP 56-rated direct-weather performance for a variety of acoustic spaces. Its enclosure is injection-molded, utilizing a copolymer material, making it equipped for use in extremely harsh weather environments with a high degree of UV protection for use in direct sunlight.
with the LTA team from the start. They fully appreciated and understood our needs, and we were probably not the easiest of customers. Opening venues don't always go to plan and we needed partners that could adapt and find solutions to issues that could occur. We had a few stumbling blocks, but LTA were quick to respond positively. Their service carried on long after installation and now LTA continue to pay us visits to make sure we are satisfied. LTA are truly passionate about what they do and it shows.”
Full control of all audio is maintained through 2 x Audica MultiZONE zone control mixers that are equipped with 4 zones and 6 music inputs each. Each mixer has 4 outputs that can be independently configured to produce music from any one of the inputs and the relative levels are set by front panel controls. Each zone output is mono and all inputs are stereo capable (mixed to mono internally).
Since opening in June 2014, FOLK has enticed diners to let loose in a space filled with peculiar sculptures and colourful murals. Amidst an unpretentious environment that is rare to find in Singapore, FOLK's mission is to create charming and lasting memories. With a décor that provides a sense of childlike mischief, and experiences that change with every level, it definitely accomplishes the task it was built to.
Commenting on his first working experience with LTA and Colin, Dre said, “We had a strong, productive and practical relationship

Electro-Voice Rides Into Hog's Bar
Owner, Nick Mcphee with Francis Ng of TNT Audio Visual Pte Ltd
H
ogs Bar Restaurant is a restaurant cum bar set up by a biker for bikers. Considered by its owner as a “man's man bar with a family atmosphere”, Hogs Bar boasts drinks, a pool table and high-chairs for their youngest diners. “Most of our patrons tend to be family oriented hence we’ve about a dozen high chairs floating around, which for a biker bar might not seem all that usual,” stated its current owner and Harley Davidson lover, Nick Mcphee. Nestled within the shop-houses on Joo Chiat Road, one of Singapore's more conservative districts, Hogs Bar takes a new spin on the traditional dingy, edgy atmosphere associated with most biker bars by adding a sports element to its decor. It has integrated 13 x LED Screens which are programmed to different sports games at any given time. The Australian native is very proud of his concept bar that amalgamates the passions of a Harley owner together with the camaraderie of being a sports fan by putting everything under one roof. “This is a biker friendly, Australian sports bar. I ride a Harley, I like sports and I like bars. So this was a chance to basically combine my hobbies into one big hobby,” confessed Mcphee.
The 2000sq ft venue is split up into 4 different zones, the main restaurant, a function room that is meant to host intimate parties or celebrations, an outdoor alfresco area that comes complete with a Beer Garden and a special Lounge area. All zones are not only able to entertain up to 200 patrons at once, but are also able produce their own independent audio, giving each zone its own unique vibe. To bring his concept to life, Mcphee engaged the services of local integrators, TNT Audio Visual Pte Ltd, whose Application and Project Engineer, Francis Ng led the project. “For me it was really simple, I knew that I had this vision that the whole place would be full of TVs and no matter where you sat in the restaurant you’d be able to comfortably watch the TV. I wanted someone that was going to be able to deliver that for me, so it became a simple decision to choose Francis and TNT [Audio Visual Pte Ltd],” he explained. “Nick wanted to have surround sound, therefore the cabinets are also used to separate the rooms, along with the walls. For example, once a door closes in a certain zone, there is a reduction of sound leakage, which was a definite concern for them during integration. To make my design work, the
cabinets [EVID 4.2] are installed into the ceiling which makes less obtrusive with a more localized sound for that surround sound experience given the mounting restrictions,” said Ng. Having experienced similar zone set-ups in the past, Ng knew which systems he wanted to use. “For the sound, I trust in Bosch Public

Address systems. We were lucky because the PLENA matrix [Digital Sound System] was launched not long ago, and it fit our needs perfectly”. Hogs now utilises 1 x PLM-8M8 PLENA matrix 8 Channel DSP matrix Mixer that works as a complete DSP zone matrix mixer and loudspeaker processor, delivering full featured digital audio control. Ng added, “Even though it only allows for up to 8 outputs, the PLENA matrix was more than enough for a restaurant of this size. It's easy to set up, easy to program, and it makes life easier for us as integration designers.” Ensuring that fans and patrons of the Bar never miss an announcement, a ElectroVoice R300-HD wireless microphone system has been set up, accompanied by ElectroVoice EVID 4.2 loudspeakers that have been mounted into the ceiling of the entire venue. Covering all the 4 zones the speakers are powered via EV Q44-II amplifiers. Catering to the sports aspect of the venue, the main restaurant boasts 8 x LED Screens that are able to stream various games at once while the function room has another 3 x Screens mounted into the ceiling. The Lounge area allows guests to immerse themselves in all the activities offered at Hogs Bar without moving and is conveniently situated on the second floor. Its large windows allow patrons to ogle at other motorcycles in the alfresco area below, while enjoying the westernstyled indoor dining. If the conversation moves to the games, guests can get the latest scores via the screen mounted into the Lounge's ceiling or if the game on that screen isn't to their liking, they can move to the next room and join the other patrons in the main restaurant. The video concept is full HD, hence all switches are full HD standard compliant to HTCP and a Kramer

it out. This system is actually so simple all my staff can work it out,” explained Mcphee.
Using a Crestron System control via an iPad, Mcphee is able to choose streaming content and audio levels of each output and zone without having to return to the AV control room. And while, Mcphee holds the only available iPad, staff members are also given the flexibility to adjust audio settings via the Bosch PLM-WPC wall panel control.
On working with Ng for the first time, the proud owner expressed his satisfaction for the systems and the integrator. “My initial goal was to have a system where people could comfortably watch and listen to whatever sport they happened to want and Francis put it all together for us with very little fuss and very little grief. I am very happy with the system because it has run flawlessly and even though we've had issues, the issues aren’t with the system. Every time we’ve made a call for help, Francis has resolved the problem and resolved it quickly,” concluded Mcphee.
“We were very clear that we wanted be able to quickly reconfigure things because I’ve seen places where people go around, they have the TVs on different channels and they have their remote controls and are constantly flicking through twenty different channels and adjusting volume, etc., and I didn’t want any of that. I wanted it to be something that any of my staff can drive without needing to have some sort of electronics degree to work

Shangri-La Hotels Launches
SINGAPORE
Electro-Voice solutions play their role for the new brand
H
otel Jen Orchardgateway in Singapore takes the honour of being the first hotel under the Jen brand by Shangri-La International Hotel Management Ltd. Located at the heart of Orchard Road, the hotel was officially launched on 15 September 2014. The Hotel Jen brand is inspired by the virtual persona Jen, a professional hotelier who loves life, travel and the adventure of discovering new places.
Orchardgateway Singapore. Free WiFi is available everywhere, all day, and convenient mobile charging stations throughout the hotel are some of the key highlights of simple pleasures which guests can enjoy at the hotel. Playing into the technology role are the audio systems integrated within the hotel's facilities. Taking the honours of integrating the AV solutions at Hotel Jen Orchardgateway Singapore was Bizplanet Solution Pte Ltd.
“The Hotel Jen experience delivers what matters most to guests with a millennial mind set. They appreciate important things done well; demand quality, comfort and value, together with honest, authentic service; and want privacy and efficiency without unnecessary fuss or intrusion,” said Greg Dogan, president and CEO of Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts.
From the offset, the management of the hotel was clear with their objectives. They wanted an audio system that was easy for their staff to operate, able to offer subtle BGM throughout the hotel that allowed for zoning and a solution that blends easily with the hotel aesthetics. Thus Bizplanet Solution Pte Ltd decided to go with Electro-Voice solutions as they met the criteria set by the hotel.
Hotel Jen Orchardgateway Singapore features a mix of Superior, Deluxe and Premier guest rooms with a Club Lounge. There are three meeting suites that each accommodate between 6 to 12 people and for a bigger group of 20 to 100, there are the Phoenix I, II and III function rooms, where each has the amazing capacity to adapt and transform according to needs. There are three F&B outlets namely Makan@Jen, the signature all day restaurant, Lounge@Jen and Baywatch@ Jen. A 24-hour fitness centre and a rooftop pool are part of the hotel’s leisure facilities for guests to unwind. Technology is key to catering to the highly social, young-at-heart traveller at Hotel Jen
for central processing, the PA2250T power amplifier, which offers efficient performance for low impedance systems as is the case here, and a range of EVID ceiling speakers and wall panel controls. The 10th floor, features the main lobby, the lobby lounge and the All-Day dining restaurant, Makan@Jen. The complexity sets in as the large area is U-shaped. To create a subtle atmosphere of a different experience for the guest as he/she enters a different area within the floor, the space is divided into 3 audio zones. 6 pairs of 8” coaxial speaker with horn loaded Ti coated tweeter (EVID C8.2) and 2 pairs of EVID C4.2 (4”) are installed in the main lobby area for this purpose. A further 4 pairs of C8.2 are featured at Lounge@Jen and the enclosed restaurant area features a further 5 pairs of C8.2 ceiling speakers. The ceiling speakers offer 110 degree sound dispersion angles and have been installed in such a way that as the guest walks through, there is a sense of continued sound that changes according to the zone with subtlety and not abruptly.

The C10.1 ceiling subwoofers at the Gym
The fitness centre on the 19th floor features C4.2 ceiling speakers due to the low ceiling level. This is complemented with a pair of C10.1 ceiling subwoofers to provide the additional punch in the music played, as there is a need to keep up with the high energy in a space for work out. The function rooms on the 19th floor similarly feature C4.2 ceiling speakers again due to the lower ceiling. The Floor Deck is also where the rooftop swimming pool is at and features a pair of EVID6.2T surface mount speakers. Being installed outdoors, the speakers are weather-proofed.

KV2 Gets Crazy With Super Loco
As the new kid on the block of Singapore's popular Riverside hangout, Super Loco is the new Mexican taqueria located at Robertson Quay. On the menu, you find cheeky Mexican street food such as chunky tuna tostadas with chilli mayo alongside an extensive menu featuring favourites such as octopus ceviche with smoked paprika and squid ink. As a sister outlet to one of Singapore's more renowned Mexican restaurants, Lucha Loco, the restaurants' owners of Super Loco wanted to provide the same hi-end audio installation found in Lucha. For this, they called upon local integrators, Valentine Music Centre, with Audio Engineer, Desmond You leading the project. Having led the installation of Lucha Loco as well, Desmond hit the ground running. He called in the expertise of Sindo Exports to provide him with KV2 Audio speakers as, “I had previously heard the speakers in an audio exhibition and I also tested it for myself at the dealers office. For this venue, I found those speakers to be the perfect size while providing the best sound quality.”
All in all, Desmond ended up installing 3 units of the KV2 ESD36 speakers around the restaurant, much to the surprise of the owners. “At first, the owner had doubts when they heard that I only needed 3 speakers for their outlet. But, once I explained the system and since I had done the work on their first outlet, they trusted me and gave me the green light to install the solutions. After the completion, they were shocked that the sound not only covered the whole outlet but that it sounded great as well.” The ESD36 has been designed as a passive loudspeaker for reproduction of recorded music in small areas, making it suitable for fixed installations as full range stand-alone or with sub-woofers. Powering the speakers are 2 x KV2 ESP2000 rack-mounted, high definition amplifiers. The ultra high definition 2 channel rack mountable power amplifiers have been specifically designed for optimised performance with ESD loudspeakers, as well as with other passive systems. Thanks to the new installation, customers can now feel the groove of the music and some
have even noticed how they do not need to raise their voices during networking sessions or dinners. “The sound system also assists the floor staff to take their customer orders quicker and with less errors. It has increased the quality of service as well and this leads to everyone having a pleasant evening with their friends or family,” added Desmond. With its relaxed atmosphere and salsa beats, Super Loco is now, not only a great spot for those who love Mexican street food, but those who enjoy good music as well. www.kv2audio.com www.sindoexports.com www.valentinemusiccentre.com

Powersoft Drives EAW @ The Fairy Mountains
H
eld in the Chinese south-western city of Wulong Chongqing, the Fairy Mountains Music Festival included a line-up of famous musicians such as Wu Bai, Chang Chen-yue, Landy Wen and Qin Yong, a leading singer from the seminal Chinese rock band, Black Panther (Hei Bao Yuedui). Six other bands from Chengdu and Chongqing also performed at this festival.
Powersoft K series power amplifiers were employed to drive EAW KF line arrays at the majestic event that was so readily attended that the organiser set a limit capacity of 5000 capacity, each day. EAW KF series line arrays were chosen to fulfill the PA requirements, powered by Powersoft K series Class D amplifiers. 16 x EAW KF760 and 8 x EAW KF740 3-way full range line array modules were hung at the both sides of the stage, 8 x KF760s and 4 x KF740s per side, for far- and nearfield coverage. 2 x EAW UX8800 DSPs were integrated to optimise the acoustic performances of the loudspeaker systems. Rental staging company Chongqing Stagecraft Sound & Light Co., Ltd. were responsible for the technical side of the festival. They used a total of 18 x Powersoft power amplifiers bought from Sanecore, Powersoft ’s official distributor in China.
“These compact rack-unit amplifiers from Powersoft offer an amazing amount of power. More than 85% high efficiency results in more amplifier output power. These amps feature unequalled Class D design with fixed switching mode, so they can work at very low load impedance, and bring great, natural and crystal clear sound. ” - Hu Dayi, FOH Engineer The Powersoft armoury consisted of 12 x K3 amps and 6 x K10 amps, which were not only able to provide sufficient power to the loudspeaker systems, but were also able to make an intelligent management of the power supply. Projection Mapping Helps Tell The Story for INC’s Centennial Celebrations Microdata together with 28 Panasonic projectors get the job done
I
glesia ni Cristo (Church of Christ) was founded in 1914 by Brother Felix Manalo who also became the church’s first executive minister. Since then the church has grown exponentially not only within the Philippines but also around the world. According to Brother Edwil Zabala, an INC church is inaugurated every 2.7 days. This year the church celebrated its centennial on July 27th, with a musical production that was held at the Philippine Arena, which is owned by INC and considered to be the largest indoor stadium in South-East Asia. The over two hour production retold the story of the church from its beginnings to its present. It also was a celebration in praise of God. The musical featured a 1000 strong adult choir, a children choir comprising 200 children and 500 dancers that saw participants from overseas as well. The preparations for the event started a year back and smaller stage plays were held intermittently to build the hype and anticipation for the musical.
The musical saw the full capacity of the Philippine Arena occupied. On top of the 55,000 audience, there were literally thousands outside the Arena and many more watching the broadcast at the various INC churches.
The Challenge The biggest challenge was in getting the setup done and synchronising the performers, music, lighting effect and the projection mapping. The key reason being that the Philippine Arena was only inaugurated on 21st July and with certain permissions still needing to be approved, rehearsals only
took place a day before the musical. The rehearsals were only completed at 3am and the technical team still needed time to sort out some technical issues. As Brother Edwil Zabala, commented, “It is truly with God’s grace that everything fell into place. Yes there were, as expected some minor issues but overall the musical went on smoothly.”
Projection Mapping When planning for the musical got underway, the technical team had suggested using projection mapping. They felt that it would

“It was really a big challenge for our Watchout team to do the image alignment because of the very limited time allotted for them to do it as the entire floor and stage area was being used for rehearsals till late in the evening, the day before the event,” said Ilao. “We believe that teamwork, dedication and commitment of our people and the capability of Watchout V.5 played a major role in the success of this project.” help create a more dramatic effect so that the audience can be more immersed, which would help with the message being conveyed more effectively. This was the first time the INC technical team were going to use projection mapping and they decided to get the technical expertise of Microdata. Content production for the projection was left to the expertise of Optima Digital. The stage and floor area was 168 by 85 feet and the projection mapping was to extend beyond the stage as there were performers within the field (floor) as well. Thus it was a huge area to cover. To do the job, Microdata deployed 28 units of PT-DZ21K Panasonic Full HD projectors with 20,000 lumens brightness. Considering that the projectors were installed in trusses 64 feet above ground, there was a need for a high lumens projector. A WATCHOUT system with 29 outputs was also deployed for the production and playback. Carlito G. Ilao, Sales Manager, Rental management Group at Microdata added, “We have a very good and well experienced technical team that handled this project from the initial stage to implementation. An ocular inspection was done and a series of technical meetings were conducted with the
client and other suppliers to ensure that the projection mapping will address the client’s expectations. Our technical people calculated the throw distance of the projectors and made a precise measurement to cover the entire stage and floor area.” As for the height that the projectors had to be installed from, Ilao stated that this was because they had to consider the height where the lights were installed and ensure that the projected image is not compromised. The projectors were installed periodically before the Arena’s inauguration with the alignment being completed the day after the inauguration. But to see it work according to the script, they had to wait till the day before the event and make necessary adjustments till the wee hours of the morning. This also involved ensuring that the over 500 lighting fixtures that were used for the event were not blurring out the mapping.
The End Result According to Brother Reino Bilang, the projection mapping definitely created a WOW effect. “Other than the co-ordinated lighting and audio effects and even the use of pyrotechnics for one scene, the contents from the projection mapping helped to bring to life the storyline, which simply would not have been possible without the technology.” The audience within the Arena were left in awe and more importantly made them proud of their belonging to the church. “We were also pleased to have worked with Microdata. They have been working with us for a number of years and we were confident that they could deliver the technical support that was needed. As for the projectors, Panasonic is a trusted brand and the projectors did not let us down,” said a smiling Brother Reino Bilang. http://iglesianicristo.net www.microdata.com.ph

ETC Sees RED By Elissa Nadine
“By replicating his actual studio, we were able to put the audience in the same mindset that he had and this meant that we were also working with the same constraints that he would have been working with back then.” - Samantha Scott-Blackhall, Director
I
t is 1958. Mark Rothko, one of the most influential postwar American artists, is in his studio working on a major commission for the opening of The Four Seasons Restaurant in New York. Produced at the Esplanade Theatre Studio in Singapore, RED is a staging of the awardwinning docudrama written by John Logan and focuses on Rothko and his new assistant Ken. Together, the audience follows them through the course of their 2 year journey to produce 35 wine-dark paintings that will come to be known as the infamous, Seagram Murals. According to Director, Samantha ScottBlackhall, “the play is more than just a biography, it’s about the relationship these two characters formed, and how the dynamic of their relationship changes when Ken changes from student to someone who actually inspires Rothko to reconsider his motivations for work.”
“When Rothko painted, it was very important for him that the paintings were not just blocks of colour. To him, they were supposed to evoke an emotional response from the viewer and the reason he made them so big was so that they filled the peripheral vision of anyone who was looking at it. So for him, the paintings could take the viewer to another place.” Set in Rothko's New York studio, RED oozed with authenticity. By using the same room dimensions, set designer, Wong Chee Wai built a near-perfect replica of Rothko's actual studio in just 5 weeks. The result was a set filled with canvases measuring the same size as the original paintings and lamps from the 1950s as props. “By replicating his actual studio, we were able to put the audience in the same mindset that he had and this meant that we were also working with the same constraints that he would have been working with back then,” explained the multi-award winning Director.

To capture Rothkos' defining period, Singapore’s Blank Space Theatre together with Lighting Designer, James Tan focused the lighting design on a range of ETC luminaires. Explaining the lighting design process, Tan said, “From the very beginning, I had a conversation with the director about what kind of looks we wanted to have and how Rothko liked to cover up the windows while he created. He put up practical lights in his studio so that when you viewed the paintings, they had an “inner luminescence”. But, because the windows were still physically present in reality, there was always outside light coming in. For Red, we wanted to create a contrast between the outside world and the inside world, which is why I thought that ETC fixtures would work well. They give me the kind of punch that natural light has that combats the incandescent fixtures we have for our interior.” Supplied by local show design company, Control Fre@k, Tan was able to create natural-looking light shining through the windows of the set by using 7 x ETC Source Four LED Lustr+ luminaires. “I think we were at an advantage here because we have all this incredible technology to change the time of day, to change the mood and to transport the audience through two years on this stage journey. It’s a balance of being able to aesthetically see the 1950s by using the technology of today.” On the flow of the show, Scott-Blackhall noted: “When you’re telling a story, there is so much subtext and emotional shifts are

How they see the space changes completely by the end of the play and you can only do that with the lights and sound and the space to guide that journey.” Drawing the audience further into the world of Red, Tan placed a Source Four LED Series

Here, Tan’s design for the dramatic scene included 2 x 21'' ETC Selador Classic Vivid-R LED luminaires that were rigged above the moving wall of the painting. “The Vivid-R fixtures were very useful, especially with the accessory frosts provided by ETC. We found that they gave a controlled focus on the central painting, making it "POP”, especially when we used very saturated colours. Also the dimming qualities were not 'steppy' but smooth, and it came across like a conventional fixture but with the flexibility of an LED fixture. It also provided a good tone with its varied colour changing abilities and above all, a three dimensional effect to that scene, making the painting seem like it was floating,” stated Tan.

Dealing with the challenge of the changes in years and seasons, Tan added: “We were always clear with how we wanted to portray each scene. For example, when it was Winter, we used an MDG Atmosphere to create a sense of the cold in winter spilling into the studio from the exterior of the studio. The output for the transient haze effect was very smooth with the help of the Martin AF-2 fan. Haze was well spread and dissipated in time to clear the air for the final painting scene, where we didn't want any remnant haze.” ETC training partner, Jeffrey Yue from Control Fre@k, was also brought on to handle the audio environment of the play and “to help the play along”. “My role was to serve the performance text. Whatever the play required, from effects, to underscoring transition music, to the electrical sounds from fluorescent lights. But I also wanted to be here to help these ETC products gain exposure. These products are new to some Singapore designers and to venues like the Esplanade. I want to expose the local industry to products that are around and worth the time and money.” All control was supplied via an ETC Ion console with the latest v2.2 software. “The Ion was easy to program and it worked well
for the play,” noted Tan. “With it, the lighting programmer from CTRL Fre@k was able to program smoothly, despite a very short technical prep time.” Assisting Tan was his Lighting Designer partner Petrina Dawn Tan while Stage Manager Sheri Hogan called the shots once the show opened. With a very visual and creative lighting design, Red captured the personality and

Barco Lights Up Nanjing YOG Ceremony
T
he Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Nanjing was the second Olympic competition held in China, after the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. While the extensible and movable scroll stage used in the 2008 opening ceremony was extremely impressive, the limits of the display technology at that time confined the picture to only a third of the available space. At this year’s ceremonies in Nanjing, state-of-theart video projection technology provided by Barco and High End transformed the entire floor of the stadium into a giant canvas. According to Sha, the ceremony was the largest projection project of its kind in the world to date. Barco, together with High End Systems, Inc. a Barco company, were selected as the exclusive projection and video processing provider for the ceremonies of the second Summer Youth Olympic Games, held in Nanjing, China. Sha Xiaolan, a well-known lighting design master in China, was the chief designer for the lighting and video at the ceremony. Using Barco HDF-series high-brightness projectors and High End Axon HD Pro media servers, he succeeded in creating the world’s largest
stage projection, presenting a compelling visual feast to those watching around the world. The ceremonies explored three variations on the theme of “the Chinese Dream”: Chasing the Dream, Catching the Dream, and Realizing the Dream. Powered by projectors and Axon media servers, breathtaking spectacles such as the Dream Tower, where more than a hundred young acrobats turned
the site into a vast universe, and a wealth of ever-changing scenes were projected onto the stage, presenting the audience with a striking and immersive experience. To achieve this, 112 x 26,000-lumen Barco HDF-series projectors were deployed at the top of the bleachers on both sides. The projection area covered more than 10,140m2 at a projection distance greater than 120m.

In order to meet the director’s design requirements and realize the world’s most sophisticated projection mapping, the team had to take many factors into consideration, such as large-scale geometric correction, stitching and blending, multilayer superposition, multi-point correction, and more. Barco used its unique SIMCAD virtual stage design software to pinpoint each location. The projection area was then divided into 14 sections with 2x7 stitching and blending, and in each section, the same picture was projected by 8 x projectors. Fiber-optic cable linked the 112 projectors to 56 x Axon HD Pro media servers, creating a projection on a scale rarely seen before in global application practices. Thanks to the direction team’s perfect planning, the event’s comprehensive, stereoscopic, and up-to-date projection not only created a stunning stage performance but also achieved high cost efficiency. The ceremonies involved extraordinarily complicated image processing. The 8-layer image superposition at a distance greater than 100 meters posed the most stringent requirements for image processing capacity and precise control. The Barco Athena processors built into the HDF-series projectors rapidly accomplished a set of multi-point geometry corrections, ensuring high image quality and facilitating an efficient process. What’s more, they eliminated the cost of purchasing additional equipment and simplified manual operations. Sha was delighted with the setup’s performance stating, “Barco’s projectors enabled the powerful image processing

Road 15A were set up to ensure top-notch sound for Wanting Qu’s “down-in-front” fans, and D.A.S. DSP-2060A and DSP-4080 monitors handled the management and control of the entire system. The S.A.G. technicians decided to take 12 of their compact Aero 12As on the road for the remaining concerts on the “Say the Words Asian Tour”, which were held in smaller, more intimate venues. These systems were also rigged in two clusters of six units per side on opposite sides of the stage. ancouver-based, China-born Wanting Qu sings and writes songs in both English and Chinese to bring together East and the West with her singular style of melodic alternative pop. The artist recently took China by storm on her “Say the Words Asian Tour”, a 22-city whirlwind which Wanting Qu kicked off in her hometown of Harbin. Thousands of fans packed the Harbin Sports City Center Stadium to hear their native darling perform live, and the superb sound was provided by a range of D.A.S. Audio professional sound systems. When Wanting Qu decided to organize her Asian tour she called in long-time partner S.A.G. (Sound Arts Group) to help ensure the crystal clear sound she knew she needed at all 22 concerts. S.A.G., a sound rental company and post-producer that provides recording and mixing services and a range of first-class audio equipment for concerts and other events, had previously worked with Wanting Qu at the S.A.G. recording studio Jiang BeiShen and Zhang Bo own in Beijing and knew that D.A.S. Audio systems would give the artist precisely the sound she expected to hear. The packed schedule put the pressure on the S.A.G. sound team, who had limited time to set up between concerts. They also had to design two separate sound configurations, one for Harbin’s large indoor arena and
another for the more intimate theater venues on the rest of the tour. The engineers opted to bring in systems from D.A.S. Audio’s catalogue of Aero Series 2 products for the kick-off concert in Harbin, rolling out 24 large-format Aero 50 systems for the FOH. These systems were rigged in two clusters of 12 units per side in a classic left/right set up and were augmented with 16 x D.A.S. LX218C subwoofers, ground stacked under each hang in eight unit blocks.
Sound engineer and S.A.G. co-founder Zhang Bo commented on the advantages of deploying the D.A.S. systems for the “Say the Words Asian Tour”: “We have extensive experience with the D.A.S. systems and are fully aware of what they’re capable of in a range of different venues, and they made set up and getting the right sound quite fast and simple for us on this tour.” www.dasaudio.com

Floriade’s Nightfest Becomes A Showtechfest With Martin MAC
T
his year’s Nightfest at Canberra’s Floriade was a Showtechfest when it came to lighting fixtures. Res X supplied the lighting gear to Mandylights who were the lighting and production designers for the event. Besides lighting the large site complete with a couple of dozen flower beds, Mandylights also had to provide all of the functional site lighting. This year, they decided to light the main flower bed vista with 48 x Martin MAC Auras and 24 x Clay Paky Sharpys. “We were really keen to try the MAC Auras as we’ve never tried them before on this project and we love the colours that come out of them,” commented Richard Neville, director of Mandylights. “Every year we do a different colour scheme for the flower beds and this year we wanted to use pastel colours of which the MAC Auras have a great range. The Sharpys worked well too because we needed something small with a powerful beam.” Another flower bed which was presented as a 50m-wide map of the world, was lit with festooning in the bed but Richard needed a very high output LED flood to deliver an intense shade of blue. “Res X gave us the Pro Shop LED Flood waterproof fixtures which ticked all of the boxes for us,” added Richard. The Rhododendron Garden always houses a special install and this year it was full of inflatable flowers with LED tape installed in
them. Richard then required a fairly compact moving light that could go really wide when required and this led him to the MAC Viper. “We used 6 x MAC Vipers and they worked very well,” he said. “They have the best stock gobo collection Martin has ever produced; they’re all very usable, high impact gobos but there are some great theatrical gobos too. We could do some really nice break up patterns but get really trippy when we needed to.”
Control was all MA Lighting, as it has been for the past five years, and Richard reported that they have never had an issue. “We run the MA2’s and NPU’s in temperatures from minus 5 degrees up to high 20 degrees, we chuck them in the back of buggies to move them around the park and they’ve never missed a beat,” he remarked. www.martinpro.com

nternationally acclaimed artist, Ivan Rutherford turned to DPA's d:facto Vocal Microphone to help him give a truly emotional performance during a recent oneoff show in Hong Kong.
The actor and singer, who has performed the role of Jean Valjean in Les Miserables over 2,000 times on Broadway, was looking for a microphone that could deliver exceptional sound quality and clarity through a large venue sound system. He also wanted a hand held microphone so that he could move freely on stage while he sang a series of Broadway hits dating from the 1930s to the present day.

Macan Launched In Style
Porsche's local distributor Stuttgart Audio gave the Macan SUV a great coming out party in line with the great response it received from its many fans in Singapore. ....
M
ore than 1000 invited guests gathered at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in July to mix, mingle and get close-up to the different Macan models. It was also the first car launch event to be held at the Indoor Stadium, in its 26 years history! It was also the first time Porsche had decided to hand-over the Macan to the first 23 owners who had pre-ordered the car, at the launch event itself. So right after the event, 23 delighted owners had the pleasure of driving off with their new set of gleaming wheels straight from the venue. To ensure that the brand had a befitting launch, UnUsUaL Development was called upon to provide technical consultation and production for the event. UnUsUaL created a large LED canvas made up of several panels as the backdrop to the event. The panels comprised of 360 pieces of M3 Pitch 10 LEDs, which was about 180 square metres. One huge panel that was centralised was complemented on the left and right with smaller vertical panels. The trusses holding the panels were also used effectively with lighting fixtures hung on them thus creating a blend of visual and lighting extravaganza. M3 is UnUsUaL's own brand of LED panels. “The huge main panel at the backdrop enabled us to playback video footages and of course live action that ensured that the
attention of the audience was captured due to its size. The smaller vertical panels on the sides allowed us to continue with the branding exercise subtly when the main panel was showcasing other visuals,” said Alan Meng of UnUsUaL Development. The lighting fixtures used for the event had a mix of 120 units of M3 15R LED Beams, 40 units of Vari*Lite VL 3000 Wash and 80 units of M3 RGBW Parcan Spots which were all controlled through a grandMA2. The dramatic launch started off with a Macan being lowered down from the roof to the beats of energetic music reproduced by the JBL Vertex systems mixed with a Digidesign Venue console and supported with lasers and of course lighting. Once the Macan was lowered and driven to the front, the LED back drop was lifted up to make way for the rest of the cars to come onto the platform, which was very exciting for the 23 owners as it was their cars that came up. The LED backdrop was brought down again to ensure that the visual branding was kept strongly alive. The UnUsUaL team deployed 6 units pf Panasonic HD cameras to capture the live action and a Green Hippotiser media server ensured that layering, scaling and switching between the live feeds and playback sources were handled seamlessly. The 48 units of
Chainmaster 1 ton motorised chain hoists played a critical role in the lowering and lifting of the LED panels as well as the lowering of the Macan from the rooftop. The exhilaration continued as guests and the owners got a closer look at the cars followed with a post-launch reception. There was palpable excitement in the air throughout the event, with the lights, visual, audio and lasers deployed, ensuring that a high energy was maintained throughout the event. www.unusual.com.sg

PR Lighting Dominates @ Incheon Asian Games
T
he Incheon Asian Games in Korea is the largest sporting event in Asia — set on an Olympic scale, with around 10,000 athletes from 45 countries representing 36 sports. For the 17th edition, both the Opening and Closing Ceremonies were held in the 62,000-capacity purpose built Incheon Asiad Main Stadium, with K-Pop stars and Gangnam Style singer Psy headlining the starstudded opening show. With ‘Diversity’ as the theme, the large rental company Canlite drew on huge quantities of PR Lighting fixtures, deploying nearly 200 heads to perform specific tasks — comfortably the largest single brand represented. At the same time it met the specification of lighting designer, Han Soo Na, and his programmer Young Gu Kang. The inventory included more than 100 powerful PR 5000 Spot, Wash and Framing variants — many of them positioned, along with XR 330 Beams on the top of the roof to deliver strident lighting effects directly to the centre of the stage during the music sequences. All the fixtures were purchased new and were customised specifically for the Asian Games— but first they had to successfully undergo rigorous quality control and camera tests, with Canlite reporting that the colour palette of the XR 330 Beam and colour temperature comfortably met the standards for demanding TV and camera work. At the same time, the overall brightness and
output of all units also satisfied the technical requirements, while the fixtures were easy to programme at the grandMA2 lighting console. It is for this reason that Canlite holds a large inventory of PR Lighting pieces, including high end products like the PR 5000 Series, midrange fixtures such as the XR 330 Beam in addition to LED Studio products. Said Canlite’s Sang Shin Lee, “We chose these fixtures because they are both powerful and fully featured, with advanced functions, reliability and excellent all round performance.” He added that because the PR lights are so bright and easy to handle, fewer fixtures were required to cover the entire stadium. The XR 330 itself has a fast movement and vivid lights, and the wide number of lighting effects generated also proved very useful, noted Sang Shin Lee.
Commenting on the event, PR Lighting’s International Assistant Sales Director, Sasha Xiong said, “It is gratifying that once again PR Lighting’s fixtures were selected for such a mega project as the Asian Games and we thank both our customer and lighting designer for investing so much confidence in the brand with this deployment.”
“PR Lighting and its products have picked up many plaudits from customers for those large scale events, and this groundswell of praise has given us the confidence and technical competence to advance even further into the high profile events sector." www.pr-lighting.com

LIVE! November - December 2014
MALAYSIA
Clay Paky Brings Good Vibes You’, the soulful trip-hop and dark R&B tunes that were a perfect compliment to the rainy weather. Adding to the mood set by the music, and following the riders set by the main acts, the stage was decked out in a mix of fixtures with a simpler configuration when compared to the main RED stage.
“The Blue stage was a much simpler stage as compared to the Red. It featured a front, mid and back truss with the Clay Paky fixtures along with ROBE ROBIN 100’s. The audio was provided by 14 x L-Acoustic KUDO tops (16) and SB18 subs (8). FOH control was a Avid Profile utilizing wave 9.2 and monitors control was a SD8,” explained Martin Rutter, Production Manager at GPS

alaysia’s music festival for all ages, the Good Vibes Festival returned this year for its second installment at the Sepang Go Kart Circuit with a greater number of contemporary headliners, bigger food offerings, and more activities to exhilarate festival goers. Headlining the festival were acts such as Ellie Goulding , Empire of the Sun and Banks. It started out sunny enough but less than 3 hours into the show, the 8,000-strong crowd faced repeated bouts of rain that seemed to turn on and off throughout the show.
The atmosphere was kept high though, thanks to Global Production Services Malaysia (GPS), the “preferred production and rental supplier” for the 2nd year running. GPS worked in collaboration with events and technical support company: Digital Aid Productions(D8). Definitely not strangers to the Sepang Circuit, D8 were responsible for the productions of acts such as AVICII and The Killers during their performances at Sepang.
Festival activities were split between stages with most of the headlining acts performing on the RED and BLUE stages where a mixture Clay Paky fixtures waited to put on their own performance.
BLUE STAGE Up on the blue stage, festival attendees were treated to the sultry sounds of Californian singer, Banks and Australasian electronic music duo, Empire Of The Sun. With her rhapsodic voice, Banks kicked off her set with the single, ‘Before I Ever Met
For the smaller acts set to perform on the Blue stage, 4 x Clay Paky Alpha 1500 Wash's were combined with 12 x Sharpys. A fixture that has now become a staple on the Malaysian festival stage.
RED STAGE For the fiery main headline act, the aptly named Red Stage was decked out in a higher percentage of gear and was further enhanced by the debut of the Clay Paky A.leda B-EYE K20 in the Malaysian Live market. The A.leda B-EYE K20 is a high performance wash light, a breathtaking beam light, and a creator of completely new spectacular visual effects. When the B-EYE beam is zoomed down to 4°, the "wash" light turns

into a "beam" fixture. The B-EYE therefore becomes a surprising mid-air parallel effect light, capable of generating a pulsating beam of micro-rays, which may be controlled individually, each with its own colors and shades. All the parameters of each LED can be completely controlled. Arranged on stage were 18 units of the luminaire along with 22 x Alpha 1500 Spots and 23 x Alpha 1500 Washs. All of which were complimented by 14 x Sharpys and 22 x Martin Atomic Strobes. “For the red stage, the lighting design was supplied by EOTS and Ellie Goulding and then merged by GPS and redrawn to satisfy both acts requirements,” added Rutter. “Each act had different control options so we supplied the Chamsys and GMA lite as per each acts request. Closing the show, British singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding‘s synth-rock tunes were delivered to the crowd via another L-Acoustic system that featured 24 x Kudos and 16 x SB18 subs. FOH control was once again provided via an Avid Profile (utilizing wave 9.2) but backed by a monitor set combo

made up of wedges and IEM controlled through a Yamaha PM5D RH and an SD10. “Over the years we have done many festivals and the key is to collate all the riders talk to the main players and merge and design a stage that works for everyone,” stated Rutter.
“I have used these fixtures before and they have always been reliable and do what they are designed to do. As long as the fixture is made by a recognized manufacturer I am happy to use it.” Wrapping up the set – and festival – with her hit, ‘Burn’, Goulding's first performance in Malaysia was a booming success. Therefore, despite its shaky beginning and the adverse
weather, the overall feel-good atmosphere set up by GPS and D8 provided a vibe good enough that many can't wait for the 2015 edition! www.claypaky.it d8projects.com

HaAavve U Met...? November - December 2014
Monitor Engineer – Selangor, Malaysia
32 year-old “Big Smooth” aka Simon Mathews is a Malaysian-born engineer who has gone on to tour the world with some of the biggest names in music, including – The Black Eyed Peas, Big Time Rush, Guns 'N' Roses and Elton John. He is currently on tour with Elton John in the States and was gracious enough to take time out of his busy schedule to have a chat with E-Tech Asia on how a boy from Selangor, Malaysia went on to become a touring monitor engineer working for one of the biggest audio company’s in the world.
Big Smooth..There must be an interesting story there
Simon: It was given to me by the Tour Manager/Accountant on the Elton John Tour. I used to have a full head of hair and one day I decided to shave it all off. Ever since then, the name just stuck..
How did you get your start in Live Sound?
Simon: In high school, I started working in small gigs for churches, weddings, stuff like that. Once I graduated from SAE, I moved into studio recording for about 6 months. I helped Reshmonu, a Malaysian R&B artist produce his first album. I was the 4th engineer
on that album and it went on to win the Malaysian Grammy for Best Engineered Album. After working within the same four walls for 6 months, I realized the studio environment wasn't for me. That's when I branched into Live Sound and started making my connections and doing radio shows along with other gigs.
Tell us more about how you came to work with Clair Global Simon: I knew about Clair Global for a long time. They are the biggest audio company in the world, with branches in the US,

Canada, Switzerland, London, Japan and even Australia. We have a branch to cater to any tour that needs us.
Going straight from Malaysia to the US was a big step. What made you do it and how?
Simon: I found that there were bigger opportunities in the US as opposed to Malaysia when it came to the kind of career I wanted to have. I had applied to Clair back then but they didn't even look at my resume at all. Also, I was willing to go back and start from the bottom. It's the hardest thing to do when you're already established in your own country but I wanted to get out of Malaysia because the industry was not growing. So I went back to school. I remember, I was at the airport and my dad asked me if I was sure that leaving was what I wanted to do and I said, “Yup, I'm getting out of this country”. It was scary as hell. Going to a foreign country where you have no-one and know no-one. What kept me going was that I wanted to leave Malaysia. I was sick and tired of living month to month because if I didn't work, I didn't live. So I decided, enough was enough. For the next 1 year, I spent 18-20 hours a day at the Full Sail (Orlando) Entertainment College. I lived in school. I went to every single lab and even asked lecturers to let me in on classes that weren't mine because I just wanted to sit in and listen. I tried to absorb as much as possible and through that I got to know the instructors better as well. Just before I graduated, I started looking for a job and I sent my resume to everyone. From manufacturers to small sound companies, even broadcasters like the NFL. No-one got back to me. Thankfully, I had established that rapport with lecturers and because of that, the head of student placement helped me to

get in touch with Clair Global. I remember I got the call for the interview with Clair at 6pm on a Friday, and they told me that I had an interview on Monday at 8am. After a 2 hour interview, I left the Clair building without knowing if I got the job. I didn't have anything – no car, no bicycle, no money. I only had 600USD in the bank, no money to pay rent and no money to leave the country. A week went by before I started to panic because I would have to find a way to leave the country if I didn't have a job since I was an international student. I called Clair Global and they were surprised that I hadn't been contacted yet. They were very nonchalant about it and told me I could start in January. It was November, at the time, so I had to figure out where I was going to live in the meantime. Luckily I had a friend from school, Donovan Friedman, and he used to work part-time at Clair and was going back to a full time employment. He let me move in with him and his family and this is where I live till today.
How important is education compared to experience?
Simon: Experience is one thing, but when a new console comes out and if you don't understand how an engineer writes a manual, you're going to have a problem. When tours come through Asia, techs start trying to tell you what they want, and how can you give it them if you don't understand the technology behind it all? I see things slowly changing now and education is becoming more important. It's a good thing it's changing because if not, the industry would be done in Asia.
Ever thought of coming back?
Simon: I have come back and sadly, the mentality is still the same. In Malaysia, you have to do more than just sound. Sound helps lights, barricades helps staging and the quality of the show suffers. You're basically putting 3 people there to do a 6 person job. It happens outside of Asia as well but not as bad. Basically, companies don’t want to pay workers to do the right job because that would mean charging the client more. On Elton John right now we have 5 people in audio alone. 2 engineers (Monitor/FOH), 1 systems guy who takes care of the FOH guy. A monitor tech (me) and 1 PA guy who flies
the PA. The work is split which means we can all help each other out when needed but we are also able to concentrate on our own work as well. That's the main difference: people here [USA] pay for a good job. That's not happening in Malaysia, it's starting to but its still got a long way to go.
What advice do you have for those who want to follow in your footsteps?
Simon: If you want to get out there, start small. Get to know people, learn about the gear. Try to be the best you can because being the best and people knowing that you are the best is actually what gets you more work. It actually changes your rates. People will recognize you and people will hire you. Word of mouth is REALLY important and if your name gets spread out, people from different countries will hear about you. And they will want to hire you. People are willing to spend the money to do that. Once you're big in Asia, people in Europe will start looking at you and that's how you branch out, and that's how you make a name for yourself. Don't forget that people will notice everything you do. The good and the bad. I don't have the word 'fail' in my vocabulary. If I'm going to do something, I'm going to do it right. Know an interesting personality that we should?
