Analog Way’s Aquilon Debuts in Thailand

KLANG training in China

The conference and gala dinner for PTT Petroleum AGM, Thailand’s premier multinational energy company, became the first event in the country to use Analog Way’s new Aquilon RS2 to drive a massive array of LED video displays. The project, produced by KS Plus Light & Sound System Co.,Ltd., a leading AV company based in Bangkok & Phuket Thailand, was held in August. The Event was designed with three portrait-mode LED video displays that partially arched over the stage to showcase dynamic visuals for speaker support and entertainment. The company chose Aquilon RS2, Analog Way’s pre-configured 4K/8K multi-screen presentation system and videowall processor, to power the 4K content. “The LED screens were very challenging for us because they were not easy to set up,” says KS Plus Light & Sound System Co., Ltd, Managing Director, Sirasak Pichayapipat (Kevin). “We had a total of 117 square meters of LED P4 with a large truss structure and 30 motor hoists.” He reports that the company “was confident that Aquilon RS2 could handle such a large-scale event with last-minute requests and adjustments. We’re so grateful that Aquilon arrived in time for the show!” Kevin’s team paired Aquilon with an Analog Way Pulse² - 3G highresolution mixer and seamless presentation switcher for the project. ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com

“With Aquilon RS2 we used three outputs for the main PowerPoint presentation: one went to the four delay screens, one to the live camera feed and one to the panel screens,” he explains. “We had two inputs for two MacPros, one for a MacBook Pro, one for the Pulse² - 3G and one for the OB system,” he adds. “Aquilon’s strength is having more 4K outputs and more layers while being practical and easy to work with. It really made our lives easier during this event!” Kevin says, “the results of Aquilon were excellent” and everyone was pleased with its performance. “The clients were so impressed that we could easily handle any additional requests they made on site.”

Claypaky Fixtures Help Australian Students Shine

Recently, “The 2019 Victorian State Schools Spectacular: Made of Stars” was staged at the Melbourne (Australia) Arena and filmed by Channel 7 for later broadcast. The annual live arena production showcasing the talent of students across the state of Victoria featured a large complement of Claypaky lighting fixtures, which helped students working behind the scenes gain real-world experience with top-of-class, professional luminaires. Some 200 schools participated in “Made of Stars,” where performers included daredevil BMX riders, skaters, acrobats, circus artists, musicians and hip-hop dancers. The three-hour show featured the arrival of a spaceship and a send up of the fashion industry. The yearly production is an invaluable performing arts opportunity for students in Victoria from primary school to grade 12 and has become a rite of passage for top young talent. PRG Australia installed the show’s lights in the multi-purpose Melbourne Arena. The Claypaky fixtures numbered 60 Xtylos, 70 Scenius Unicos, 80 Sharpy Spots, 40 Sharpy Wash 330s, 36 Alpha Beam 700s and 26 A.leda B-EYE K20s. “PRG supplied all of the lighting and rigging and ran training for the

students working behind the scenes enabling them to experience stateof-the-art fixtures like the Claypaky Xtylos,” explains Andrew Holmes, Senior Account Manager with PRG Australia. The show marked the first major use of the new Xtylos fixtures in Australia. Claypaky Xtylos is the first moving head with a laser light source. The innovative, compact beam moving light features RGB additive colour mixing so coloured light beams are as bright as a white light beam. For “Made of Stars” the Xtylos were placed along the choir crossover and on the floor around the set. They were selected to provide a stunning point of difference to the production. “Xtylos is an extraordinary instrument, almost like a scalpel: cutting, saturated beams of pure color,” says Lighting Designer Paul Jackson of Paul Jackson Design Pty Ltd. “Combined with Sharpy and Sharpy Wash fixtures, I had every permutation of beam architecture that I could want covered.” The array of Claypaky fixtures performed “very efficiently and faultfree” during the show, notes Holmes. “PRG was proud to support the next generation of designers and technicians with the next generation of lighting technology.”

LASERVISION at the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s 89th National Day Celebrations

LASERVISION, known for their world-class and Guinness Record-setting projection mapping displays, had the distinct honour to participate in this years’ international display of modern entertainment technologies to celebrate the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s 89th National Day. With the creation of the General Entertainment Authority in 2016, Saudi Arabia is striving to build a world-class entertainment industry. A range of activities and events celebrating the unity of the nation from September 19th - 23rd of 2019 featured a massive international collaboration of events bringing in some of the biggest names in entertainment productions. Alongside famous international music acts from the GCC region and world-renowned theatrical producer Cirque du Soleil, LASERVISION was engaged to provide their world record-setting projectionmapping expertise and technologies to the celebrations in Riyadh. LASERVISION’s stunning, 7000 square metres projection show beamed onto the distinctive Samba Financial Group Headquarters in the heart

of Financial Plaza. The 40-storey tower is the centrepiece of Riyadh’s new King Abdullah Financial District and features an innovative three-dimensional diamond façade designed by Foster and Partners. Although the complex and unique aesthetic of the architecture provided an intricate canvas for LASERVISION to create upon, it also presented a challenge as an all-glass surface can drastically hinder a projection mapping display—leading to poor video quality and washed out colours. However, with their expert knowledge in skyscrapersized projections and four-decades of entertainment innovation, the LASERVISION team were able to provide a solution without altering or changing the unique aesthetics of the building—providing a bold, bright and clear image across the city. Since opening up their MENA offices in 2016, LASERVISION has seen excellent growth and demand for their creative services and entertainment technologies around the GCC area, especially in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. “The demand created from the implementation of ‘Vision 2030’ has been very positive for us,” said Shannon Brooks, CEO, LASERVISION. “We are excited to continue creating world-class tourist attractions, special events and celebrations, as well as unique and artistic modern experiences around the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. As they continue to diversify and invest in their tourism economy we look forward to providing our innovative entertainment solutions.” At the end of the 5-day celebrations, it is estimated that the customised projection show reached over 1 million motorists travelling near and around the financial district.

E&E and Shure Showcase TwinPlex and Axient Digital Solutions

Held on 2nd October at the Gallery Theatre, National Museum of Singapore, the Shure’s TwinPlex and Axient Digital Technology event drew a sizeable crowd of more than 100 guests from Singapore that included end-users from different verticals as well as system integrators and consultants. The event kicked off untraditionally with the showcasing of the prowess of the TwinPlex microphones through a 30 minute performance by an Acapella group performance. This enabled guests to appreciate the capabilities of the wireless microphones in terms of clarity and range with no drop-outs. The performers who were using the solutions for the first time highlighted how they were impressed with the pick-up and natural sound of the microphones. They also commented on the ability to now include choreographed movements to their performance as the wireless systems provided them with the freedom without the need to worry about the pick-up of their vocals. The performance was followed with a brief about the TwinPlex and Axient Digital solutions by Jayme Quah, Market Development Manager from Shure Southeast Asia. ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com

Outside the hall where refreshments were served, a cable flex machine showcased how the cables used in the production of Shure’s TwinPlex lavalier microphones withstood the high tension and continuous flexing without breaking. This is a further testimony that Shure’s TwinPlex lavalier microphones are able to endure tough and extreme conditions.

Durability has always been a key issue with lavalier microphones but Shure has addressed it effectively. Through a proprietary coating, TwinPlex offers Interchangeable sweat- and moisture-resistant frequency caps that prevent sweat-outs. The cables that come in two sizes, 1.1mm and 1.6mm, have been designed to be rugged so that the cables are immune to kinks and memory effect. The cables are also paintable which comes in handy for stage performances.

There is a wide range of combinations of microphones, colours and connectors used in the TwinPlex range together with a wide range of accessories to mount the microphones. Shure had built the TwinPlex from the ground-up though feedback compiled from leading professionals in the industry. At the heart of the TwinPlex microphone is the new dual diaphragm capsule from Shure that offers twice the surface area of other microphones for ultra-pristine, natural response and robust low-frequency response. Improved off-axis consistency reads accurately, even when not speaking or singing directly into the microphones. The capsule offers extremely even response from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. It also offers low self-noise and high dynamic range as well as great low frequency response. The TwinPlex system is optimised to ensure that it does not pick up any RF signals that allows it to maintain very quiet operations.

ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com

There are five options in the TwinPlex family – four lavaliers and one headset. The TL45 which is super compact, comes with a 1.1mm paintable cable, most suitable for theatre applications. The TL46 offers a 1.6mm cable with high sensitivity output which is great for dialogues or when messages needs to rise above the noise. There is also the TL47, with the 1.6mm cable and has lower sensitivity which is able to handle the most critical acoustic environments without distortion while the TL48 is optimised for speech applications. The TL53 comes with the ease of an ultra-light and fully adjustable headset frame. Six different connector types are also available. The Shure Axient Digital which had already been introduced to the market last year and has in fact been deployed in a number of spaces within Singapore was also on hand to complement the Twinplex microphones, once again reiterating to the audience its capability to handle any spectrum environment.

Ayrton Impresses J5 Productions with Diablo-S

Total Solution Marketing CEO, Glenn Wong with J5 Productions Justin Tan and two of their new Ayrton Diablo-S Highly-regarded technical production company, J5 Productions of Singapore, has recently invested in 24 Ayrton Diablo-S 300W LED profile fixtures for its rental stock. The powerful little lighting fixtures were purchased earlier this year from Ayrton’s exclusive distributor for Singapore, Total Solution Marketing Pte Ltd., following a successful demonstration which showed off Diablo’s myriad fabulous features. These include the perfect colour rendition from its CMY colour mixing and 7-colour wheel, that produce a vast array of bright pastels and saturated colours, a gobo wheel, an effects wheel and a 100% full framing system. Designed specifically for stage applications, Diablo-S is equipped with a monochromatic LED light source calibrated at 7000K that can generate up to 19,000 lumens. At just over 21kg Diablo is the smallest, lightest and most efficient luminaire of its category. J5 Productions specializes in AVL event-related broadcast and media equipment rental across Asia. Its highly-trained operators and technical engineers are dedicated to providing the highest technical consultancy services, utilising a variety of systems, for international events, conferences, product launches and concerts. The team were particularly impressed with Diablo-S’s smooth dimming curve and beam quality, which lacked any ‘troubling hot spots’. They thought it extremely powerful for its size and approved the added benefit of saving on power consumption, which makes it suitable for most venues. Another popular feature was the ‘nice selection’ of seven interchangeable high-definition glass gobos. ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com

Having seen Diablo-S in action, the team were very satisfied and concluded Diablo-S would be a great addition to their rental business. “I really like the size of the light which makes it easy to set at every event,” says head of lighting, Lee Hanglin. Managing Director, Justin Tan, agreed, explaining why he is now a fan of the fixtures: “Clients love the effects the Diablo-S gives. They are definitely a good investment for all our different projects - launch parties, concerts, conferences and any type of live events. We will be putting them out on many more of our shows to impress yet more of our clients!”

Elite Robe Treatment for 2019 NAIDOC Awards “Several of the live the acts were quite low key, with lighting to match, so ensuring the appropriate light levels for both live audience and broadcast was important,” he commented. The curved front stage had a small thrust emanating from the middle, and above this were two semi-circular rings of trussing created with straight pieces rigged in a curved shape, with another gentler V-shaped truss further upstage. Most of the BMFL Spots, BMFL WashBeams supported by the MMX Spots were positioned on these for good coverage of the stage. The ones on the outer ring could also swing around and highlight the audience.

Elite Event Technology from Canberra – one of Australia’s leading rental and production companies – supplied lighting equipment and crew for the 2019 NAIDOC Awards which celebrated the history, culture and outstanding achievements - at community, national and international level - of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This high-profile event featured a mix of live performance and awards presentations and was hosted by media personalities Sean Choolburra and Elaine Crombie at the National Convention Centre Canberra in front of a live audience of 1,200 and broadcast live on SBS’s NITV channel. The lighting design by Tom Wright featured an all-Robe moving light rig with 12 x BMFL Spots 12 x BMFL WashBeams, 26 x LEDWash 300+’s, 12 x LED Wash600s and 14 x MMX Spots. It was the first time that Elite had been a technical supplier, working for main event producers 33Creative and 38Ten who coordinated all the technical direction. Elite’s Managing Director Darren Russell and his team took a very detailed brief from lighting designer Tom and Technical Director Peter Quinlan of 38Ten and constructed the lighting rig to their specifications. Tom explained that they were looking to create a lot of warmth onstage with a big emphasis on theatrical side light. Stage depth was limited as video was squeezed into the space. Being able to shape the light was important and they also wanted a big look, so putting lights in all the gaps between the onstage LED screens at different heights both filled the void spaces and offered powerful looks. One of the big challenges was ensuring that lighting worked for both live and broadcast contexts and treating the ‘camera as King’ meant balancing screens and front light to a constant colour temperature. Once that was achieved, other colours were chosen from a monitor screen. ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com

BMFL Wash Beams were chosen as an ideal fixture to balance the lighting levels for camera against the five columns of LED screen which were prominent onstage. Tom comments that they were ideal for the role: “Shaping the beam was key to removing spill onto the screens and parts of the stage. It allowed performers to stand proud of the video screen and gave plenty of depth with lots of intensity to play with. Colour balancing the fixtures for cameras was also great … with lots of range.” Tom operated lighting for the show using a grandMA2. Elite’s CEO Darren Russell was delighted to be involved with the event for the first time and comments that it was a “great-looking show.” Tom mentions that working with the Elite team as “A joy! This gig was quite complex for the space, and all challenges were met with a smile and a determination to deliver what was needed quickly and efficiently.” Elite Event Technology has invested steadily in Robe moving lights over the last ten years and now has several hundred in rental stock. The most recent purchases have been more BMFL WashBeams and LEDWash 300+s.

ZXE Sound and Management Sees Immediate Benefit with its dLive Console

ZXE Sound and Management had recently invested in an Allen & Heath dLive s7000 console complemented with a DM64 MixRack, 2 units of DX168 Expanders and a Dante 128 x128 audio networking card. The combination offers total input of 96 channels, 48 output channels and 128 channels for multi-tracking recording. The owner, Mr. Mustafa says, “it was the right time for us to invest in the new board as the dLive console is affordable and meets the local broadcast specifications. Its a really good board and we would like to thank Paul Anbanthan Poonga and Systems Electronics & Engineering Sdn Bhd for supporting us. For a recent event we used the Dante audio networking card for recording and it was very user-friendly.” The console performed beyond expectation for the team at ZXE Sound and Management at the recent Konsert Kitak Nang Steady! Orchestra

RTM held at the Arena Gemilang Detar Putra Unimas in Sarawak, Malaysia. According to FoH Engineer, Firdaus, “the board was very friendly and everything is in front of me and its very easy to mix. I love this board. For me its dLive for live.” The System Engineer, Shidi Zack commented that the show had a very tight time frame of 5 days to set up for a 90 channel orchestra. “It was a big challenge, but we did it in time. The dLive s7000 helped as patching was very easy and the workflow was manageable as it is fully customisable that allows us to create our own mixing interface the way we want it to be.”

Allen & Heath Announces Third Installment In 96khz Mixer Trilogy: Avantis the right-hand side of each screen, offering another way to quickly and easily access control of aux sends, EQ, compressor and FX on the currently selected channel or spot channel. “Ultimately, with Continuity UI, the engineer decides how they’d like to work, not the mixer.”

Allen & Heath has revealed its new 96kHz digital mixer, Avantis, the third to be based on the company’s XCVI FPGA engine. Avantis puts Allen & Heath’s next-generation technology in a 64 channel / 42 configurable bus console, with twin Full HD touchscreens, extensive I/O options and processing from the company’s flagship dLive mixing system. “Joining dLive and SQ, Avantis completes our trilogy of next-gen 96kHz consoles,” says Rob Clark, Allen & Heath’s Managing Director. “Avantis takes many of the features that have made SQ and dLive so popular, putting them in a standalone 64-channel mixer that offers a new UI experience, connectivity with our Everything I/O ecosystem, and the dPack option which gives you access to our advanced dLive processing options if and when you need them.

Encased in its alloy shell and tubular frame, the Avantis control surface is centered on the two Full HD touchscreens and their corresponding rotary controls. “Having two touchscreens isn’t a new concept, but we realised we could use it to unlock exciting new possibilities, which led us to develop Continuity UI,” says Andy Bell, Allen & Heath’s R&D Director. “Within seconds of getting hands-on with Avantis, engineers are going to appreciate the seamless flow between the physical controls and the on-screen software. You can work gains and pans on the rotaries, then at the touch of a soft key switch to EQ or dynamics across the whole strip. The console also provides a highly configurable FastGrab tab on

ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com

While many users will choose to pair Avantis with the 48 in / 16 out GX4816 audio expander, Avantis is part of Allen & Heath’s Everything I/O ecosystem, which means whether you’re an owner/ operator looking to build a compact system, or a rental company with existing Allen & Heath stock, Avantis allows true flexibility by connecting to a huge range of audio expander hardware. Avantis is also compatible with Allen & Heath’s range of ME Personal Mixers and IP hardware remote controllers. For local I/O, Avantis is well equipped with 12 XLR analogue inputs, 12 XLR analogue outputs, plus AES (Stereo In, 2x Stereo Out). Two additional I/O Ports allow Avantis to benefit from the full range of current dLive option cards, including Dante (64x64 and 128x128), Waves, gigaACE, MADI and more, expanding the scope for system integration, FoH / monitor splits and multitrack recording. Right out of the box, Avantis is loaded with processing tools designed to meet the demands of most users and applications, including compressors, EQs and Allen & Heath’s acclaimed RackExtra FX units (12 slots). Upgrading to dPack expands Avantis further with additional dLive processing including the Dyn8 dynamics engine (up to 16 instances), DEEP Compressors, and the Dual-Stage Valve preamp. dPack purchasers will automatically receive all future DEEP and FX updates free of charge, future-proofing their investment. “In the gap between SQ and dLive, the mixer market is littered with 48kHz DSP-based ‘old-school’ consoles,” says Nic Beretta, Allen & Heath’s Head of Product. “Avantis brings next-generation performance across the board. Customers in venues, houses of worship, touring and the rental market are going to be seriously impressed by how well this ticks the boxes. It’s a really exciting mixer at a compelling price.”

Avolites Releases Groundbreaking Synergy Software

Having already won industry awards and being used on some extremely high-profile projects in its beta stage, Avolites announced the worldwide release of its radical new software control system, Synergy, on 16 October 2019.

can be controlled from a single intuitive User Interface without the requirement to create and arrange fixtures in the media server or create ArtNet merges. Users can simply select the group and choose Ai in the pixel mapper.

Effectively a free V12 software upgrade to both its lighting console and media server ranges, Synergy unites them like never before, allowing lighting designers full visibility and fine control over both the lighting and video components of a truly multi-media performance.

Synergy also allows for live video previews of up to six simultaneous streams from the media server, inside the Titan interface, giving users full control whether the servers are located FOH or elsewhere. These can be either layer previews or screen outputs. And Synergy’s media browser allows content to be selected and uploaded to specific locations on connected servers from the console interface. This content then appears on the bank with a thumbnail ready to play as soon as it’s uploaded and/or converted to AiM.

Synergy allows users to quickly and simply pull control of pre-created screen surfaces and layers into a Titan-based lighting console at the touch of a button, or, vice versa, create surfaces in an Ai media server from within the console interface. All operations occur seamlessly using Avolites’ proprietary Titan Net protocol and take place on whatever hardware the user is running, from Titan USB interfaces all the way up to the Sapphire Touch console, and from Ai software licences all the way up to the super-powerful Q4 media server. The creative possibilities for lighting design that are unleashed as a result are endless. The software’s new Lightmap feature allows users to stream Ai video colour data through any colour-mixing fixture group, to instantly integrate them into a larger video canvas. As a result, everything from high-res LED screens to LED fixture groups

The Mysterious “dB” After some opinion stuff in the previous issues, I want to do something a little more technical, and the reason to do this now is that I am having a host of discussions every day with colleagues and I feel that having this explained once here might help our understanding in our discussions. What I want to elaborate on and explain is the use of the term dB within the pro audio industry. We all use this every day and in many different context environments and to those who know what they are talking about, this provides a lot of information very fast and efficiently and to those, who don’t know, they often think it sounds cool to throw this around, like they know stuff. First of all, a dB is unitless. This is important to understand and to remember. A dB does not come in Volts, Amperes, Watts or anything else, since a dB is always a relationship between two values of an identical unit. In the math operation to calculate the dB value, the physical unit then disappears. Within pro audio the dB is typically used to describe the relationship between output and input of any given device and when you know the input signal of a device exactly, this means, that the output is referenced to the the test signal. When you build a quotient of two values of the same physical unit, then the physical unit disappears in the quotient operation. So far so good, but then why dBm and dBu and dBV? That’s simple, because it describes the behavior of the device under test (DUT) just with a clear reference and the single letter after the dB explains and specifies, which reference is being used. Of course a line level signal behaves different than a Mic level signal and a line level output charges (loads) the input of a channel different than a mic level and this is also due to their different impedance. The classical dBm therefore references this against a impedance of 600 Ohm (typical Mic impedance value) and the dBV references it against the max Voltage which the system under test can handle. Since all those values describe an electrical system, they can also be exchanged and transformed into each other since they describe a very similar situation with a different reference. That is why 0dBV is equal to +2.2dBm, since the reference level of the dBm is a value of 0.775 Volts and the dBV is referenced to 1 Volt. In the description of the system the difference between 0.775 Volts and 1.00 Volt can also be described as +2.2 dB. That way it does not matter historically where the gear is made and what reference is used as long as the performance data is decent and the system behaves within the indicated specification.

ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com

When you build a quotient of two values of the same physical unit, then the physical unit disappears in the quotient operation. So far so good, but then why dBm and dBu and dBV? Now what about SPL levels? The same logic and approach is valid here as well. SPL is measured across the full frequency spectrum and of course low frequencies require a lot more power than high frequency, because of the wave length of those signals and because you have to move a lot of air in the low frequency band. This is why we often reference SPL measurement with a frequency weighing and by default the SPL is always measured based on a given surface area, where the Sound wave will apply its pressure. Keeping all this in mind, it helps a great deal to always mention the reference and to be clear about what is measured or stated with regards to which reference. Once we all follow this simple rule, we might even end up with data sheets that we can trust again and not have to deal with all the marketing BS that we are seeing since ten to fifteen years now. Would that not be really good? In the next column I want to explore this a little more with regards to dBFS and dBu and dBm. This has been a pet peeve since fifteen years for me. See ya! Raymond Chen, Founder/CEO, EK Lights

ETA brings you excerpts of Raymond’s speech during the Company’s 12th anniversary celebrations

Raymond Chen, Founder/CEO, EK Lights On the occasion of our twelve-year anniversary, tonight is the night of the biggest reveal to date for our company.

world that inspires us to put down our phones for a moment and look up, look around, look at each other in a shared light.

Capital investment is not only a pragmatic response to increasing demands for our products. It also plants a flag in the pro lighting field to mark our long-term commitment. As we unveil our plans for the new EK factory, remember, that it is more than the sum of its parts, it is a symbol of dedication to you and our team members, as well as to the industry that provides our livelihoods.

Twelve years ago, we got our start by taking on the humble task of designing a better PAR. Traditional PAR bodies were replaced by a new compact housing and smart thermal management design. We knew the road ahead was clearly LED and the success of this first range of coolrunning colour-changing LED fixtures launched us on our way.

Sustainable success in this small industry is fueled by innovation. It is a privilege to work in a creative industry driven by an addiction to creating stunning visual impact. As the world increasingly automates, commoditizes and miniaturizes our lived experience and interactions, the pro lighting arena brings us together in the pursuit of harnessing the latest technologies to escape the mundane with moments of shared awe, inspiration, emotion and joy. As you peek at your phones, you are experiencing the way that light bridges the gap between physical and digital space. We are in the business of bridging that gap, of building better bridges to a brighter

ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com

In the years since, we’ve delivered a succession of innovations. The LED PAR series expanded into a wide range of washes, strobes, blinders and effects. In 2011, our pixel-mapping fixtures featuring onboard ArtNet entered production. The following year, cable-free wireless batterypowered colour-changing LED uplights were introduced. In 2013, we achieved government recognition as a national high-tech firm, and LED moving head development began. Instant Breakthrough For Optocore’s Revolutionary Festival Box Global success, from Spice Girls and Billie Eilish tours to top European festivals

Optocore’s Festival Box looks set to revolutionise big event touring after rental companies around the globe were quick to respond to the launch of the much-anticipated new device this summer. As demo systems were released to targeted dealers and production companies around the world, Optocore Technical Sales Manager, Maciek Janiszewski, said, “It is gratifying that customers have trusted us with delivering a completely new device concept and placed it immediately on high-profile tours and festivals.” Early adopters have included the high-flying Billie Eilish and Spice Girls, both with Wigwam, while festivals have ranged from the mighty Sziget in Hungary and KFPP Opole in Poland, to Parklife and Bluedot festivals in the north of England. What makes Festival Box so special? In essence, it allows any audio protocol as well as video and data to tunnel over the same fiber, making it a hugely efficient solution for multi-act scenarios. Migrating the technology from sister company BroaMan’s Repeat48WDM media converter, which uses Repeat48-2Fiber modules at its source, it offers countless conversion options, supporting all fiber protocols as well as Cat5 Ethernet-based standards or even HDMI, since the standard SFP optical module transceivers are hot swappable. ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com

“With each sound engineer bringing different consoles to festivals, running different protocols to the stage box, everything can now be transported down Festival Box using just a single duplex fiber, thereby saving a tremendous amount of cabling between FOH and Stage,” continued Janiszewski. Alex Hadjigeorgiou, from Optocore-BroaMan dealer, fac365, had led the charge to put the word into the rental community at the beginning of the year. “It’s been very well-received and we’ve had really positive

SPOTLIGHT

feedback,” he said. “This year has been all about getting the concept across. In some ways the name ‘Festival Box’ restricts it as it is so much more than that: it’s perfect for running complete touring infrastructure down it, using just two fibers.” In Poland, GMB Pro Sound have had it out at the Open’er Festival at Gdynia Airport, Krakow Live Festival and Festival Opole, as well as on tour with Meskie Granie. Festival Box also provided an elegant and efficient solution at the Sweden Rock Festival in Solvesborg, supplied by Soundware Sweden, Sziget in Hungary (via Leon Szolgaltato Ltd), while in the north of England fac365 supplied the devices to dbnAudile (for Parklife and Bluedot). Said GMB Pro Sound Director, Remigiusz Kasztelnik, “ Festival Box might be a new concept but those who have tried it have immediately found it extremely useful, especially when there are different protocols in place. The big advantage is simplicity—there is no software or configuration necessary; you just plug in the cable onstage and FOH, and pair the stage boxes and consoles … whether Cat5, coax or fiber. “We expect Festival Box to become a must-have, and a no-brainer for larger tours and mid-size/large festivals over the next few years.” Wigwam co-founder Chris Hill—another early adopter, and influencer of Optocore solutions over the years—agreed. “I have always liked the quality of Optocore products and what they stand for,” he confirmed. “Festival Box has already dug us out of a couple of holes, and is proving to be a very useful tool.” It made sense to invest for many reasons, he said. “When Spice Girls came along we put it on as a data tunnel so we could put comms, video, the support band console and remote aerials through it. It got used heavily, and proved to be very flexible, reducing the number of cables to plug in at front of house.” ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com

49 NOVEMBER 2019

For Billie Eilish, Festival Box fulfilled an altogether different solution. Production had wanted to run their system over Cat5, since their Allen & Heath console sits on that network, and all available fiber ports had already been used. “So instead of wrestling with a system rejig, thanks to Festival Box they were able to carry on as they were, with no issues of distance, no reconfiguration or software changes necessary,” said Hadjigeorgiou. Chris Hill agreed. “Their production loved it because they could work the way they wanted to work. Festival Box introduced them to a really simple way of getting out of a problem. “You don’t need a laptop and another screen—you can plug in more SFPs and put other formats down it. In fact it is now being specified on another project which will require further investment. Anyone who is initially sceptical only has to see it working to be convinced.” Alex Hadjigeorgiou also believes it offers a great return on investment for mid-sized rental houses who have yet to commit to the substantial investment required in fiber cable. “It is generally hard to charge [clients] good money for fiber because it’s expected to come with the consoles,” he said. “But as Festival Box is a separate chargeable item it becomes a chargeable item it makes a lot of sense.” In summary he said, “Festival Box is ultimately about efficiency, but it’s for the long term. In years to come, once Festival Box is established, people will be saying, ‘In the old days we used to run a network, RF and console loop all on separate cables!’”

The Changing Landscape of Live Entertainment: Immersive Experiences Andrew Gordon, blogger and VP Business Development at CAST Group of Companies in Toronto, Canada is back and chats exclusively with Entertainment Technology Asia about extended reality to interactive technologies, immersive experiences that have taken over the live entertainment industry. Using technology as a medium and art as technology, these experiences encapsulate modern expression while pushing the boundaries of our imagination. From multimedia fine dining to high-tech music festivals and world tours, today’s crowds demand a lot more than just a show – They want an experience. As self-expression and communication become easier through social media, content creation has risen to take over the show. Gone are the art installations we used to call “avant-garde”; now we see them daily as our lives intersect more and more with technology and design, and we know them as “experiences”. The experiences industry is an ever-growing umbrella containing everything from art installations to live events, and from “pop-up stores” to online shopping through an AI-powered digital avatar. Contrary to the previous generation, consumers today are making a conscious shift away from material purchases in favour of memorable experiences. We want to be inspired through self-discovery, and by putting our bodies and minds through stimulating and unique surroundings. With the help of technology, creating experiences has become very commonplace as we continue to explore new combinations of media and new forms of expression to “wow” the crowd. Enter: Immersive Experiences It is entirely possible today to create experiences that can engage many of our senses at once – These are called immersive experiences. By creating an environment so contained and surreal that it tricks the mind into thinking it is somewhere else, the audience becomes fully immersed and interacts with the environment on all levels, even if they’re not actively waving their arms around or touching their surroundings. During the days when concerts were just about music, flashing lights, backup dancers and, if we’re lucky, some pyrotechnics, the way to get noticed was simply through big billboards – The bigger, the better. Today, it’s about Retailtainment: “The use of ambience, emotion, sound and activity to get customers interested in the merchandise and in a mood to buy” (George Ritzer). At this year’s Sónar festival in Barcelona, Spanish clothing brand Desigual created an interactive space for visitors to walk through and relax, including projections that track and illuminate your movements to create a collective, continuously evolving digital artwork: “We wanted to play a meaningful role within Sónar and not just have a stand selling product,” explains Desigual CMO Guillem Gallego. “Galaxy Graffiti” wall at the Samsung KX Space in London, UK These subtle yet engaging environments create memorable impressions for visitors. They’re also proof that the best experiences are created ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com

“Galaxy Graffiti” wall at the Samsung KX Space in London, UK when art, design and technology come together in complementary ways. Take the new Samsung KX space in London: The store features an array of technologies that enhance the visitor experience, including a 10m-wide LED screen where visitors can spray-paint using a “can of graffiti” (a Samsung S10 phone with a case) while seeing themselves live on-screen, thanks to PTZ cameras installed in the ceiling. By using technologies as simple as a smartphone, an LED screen and a tracking system, the Galaxy Graffiti wall allows visitors to freely explore Samsung’s various technologies while creating their own works of art. Catching Up with Technology Immersive experiences can, and do, come in all shapes, forms and sizes, but the heart of it all revolves around immersive technology. By continuously striving to create something out of the ordinary, immersive experiences push the boundaries of technology to make audiences feel as if they are a part of their surroundings. With immersive technologies, the question is not “why”, but “can we?”. Putting the “immersive” in immersive experiences requires capturing multiple senses at once, which begins with spectacular audiovisual effects, followed by innovative interactive technologies. Production firms that specialize in experience design, such as OBJ.Studio or Onionlab (responsible for Desigual’s installation at Sónar), understand the importance of fusing art, technology and design: “People are demanding more than just to look at something, people want to be a part of a festival – this is what makes the interaction so important,” says co-founder of Onionlab, Aleix Fernandez Curell.

LA Phil 100 at the Bowl – Image from XiteLabs, shot by Suzanne Teresa Captured during John Williams conducting the Main Title from Star Wars Interactive technologies have slowly become a medium of their own. With extended reality becoming more accurate and attainable, many artists have been flocking to incorporate AR and VR into their works, and festivals have been quick to engage visitors in this way. At Coachella 2019, the HP Lounge by Artechouse hosted “Lucid Dreaming”, an interaction pod that allowed festival-goers to interact with responsive AR graphics with their arms in a 10-second Boomerang video, which was then emailed to them. Interactive installations are the perfect distractions at festivals, where visitors have plenty of time to walk around and enjoy their surroundings, especially when their surroundings can be manipulated through extended reality. With technologies this advanced, it’s easy to overlook some of the traditional components that can be enhanced to create immersive experiences. For instance, simple audiovisual elements can now be combined with new real-time technologies to add a dimension of interactivity, even when the audience cannot directly participate. For their 100th anniversary, the Los Angeles Philharmonic hosted a free concert for 18,000 fans at the Hollywood Bowl featuring dynamic projection mapping that responded to the music in real-time. During John Williams’ performance, the proscenium of the Hollywood Bowl lit up to look like the inside of the Millennium Falcon. Using Notch Designer without a timecode or click-track, the generative particle system was able to create looks that reacted to the orchestra’s audio signals, working to match John Williams’ rhythm in real-time. Instantaneous reactive elements like this feel like magic, and is one of many simple ways that a fantasy world can be brought to life to transport fans to a galaxy far, far away…

Live Entertainment in the New Age In the new age, art, technology and design will work so closely together that they may become indistinguishable from one another. Interdisciplinary design, including mixed media art and experiential design, will continue to encourage artists and designers to blur the lines by incorporating art into technology, and vice versa, creating new jobs and opportunities that specialize in this combination. The term “immersive experience” may even soon become irrelevant as industries catch up and it becomes the norm for any type of event. It’s as Jens Oliver Mayer, Managing Director of Jack Morton said at InfoComm 2017: “It’s time to stop thinking in silos. Stop thinking about digital, non-digital, online, offline. We still schizophrenically separate the event strategy from the digital and technology strategy. That’s not what’s going on in the world out there.” Out there, immersive strategies are all about regarding technology as an artistic medium and likewise, exploring how art can find and create new purposes and applications for technologies. The live entertainment industry has always sought to combine the best of art and technology, so it’s no surprise that they are at the forefront of experiential design. By expanding creativity and possibilities, immersive experiences have helped redefine our demand and expectations of live entertainment, further driving technological change and determining the impact of these technologies in the long run. Right now, the demand for immersive technology is at a high. With advances in extended reality, 3D spatial audio, and real-time interactive technologies, live entertainment is becoming more surprising, and the possibilities endless.

DPA 6066 Subminiature Headset Microphones the Choice for Musical Sunday in the Park with George LSS Productions Invests In DPA’s Smallest Headset Microphones

The discreet design of DPA’s CORE 6066 Subminiature Headset Microphone, combined with the fact that it is very quick and easy to fit, helped secure an order for 18 units from Australian sound design, equipment hire and production services company LSS Productions.

large casts using radio microphones, Lo Ricco immediately understood the advantages DPA’s new 6066 Subminiature Headset Microphones offered and placed an order with DPA’s Australian distributor, Amber Technology.

Based in Melbourne, LSS Productions initially wanted the headsets for a recent production of Stephen Sondheim’s 1984 musical, Sunday in the Park with George. However, now that the units are part of the company’s permanent stock it is already deploying them on other productions including the Australian Premier of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Ben Elton’s musical The Beautiful Game.

“The 6066 headset is a lot more discreet than earlier DPA Headsets, which is why I felt it could work well for Sunday in the Park with George,” he explains. “We wouldn’t get away with the look of using a bulky headset, and on top of that the new gold colour of the 6066 mic boom blended really nicely into light or dark skin tones. Also, the new 6066 headset has a detachable cable, which is a great advantage because it means we can easily replace it if it is damaged.”

Bringing high quality sound to musical theatre and events is a key reason why Marcello Lo Ricco established LSS Productions in 2001. With his background as a performer and musician, plus 20 years’ experience as a sound designer for Broadway style shows with orchestras and ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com

Centre). As an equipment hire and production services company, LSS Productions also handles projects for educational institutions (including primary, secondary, universities and performing arts schools), performance venues and corporate business.

“The show spent one week in each venue, which is quite a quick season for a show of this size,” Lo Ricco says. “It’s a business model that Watch This has been doing for a few years but this is the first time LSS Productions has been involved with a full show season with them.”

Over the last 10 years LSS Productions has built up quite a stock of DPA microphones including headsets, lavaliers, 4099 instrument microphones and some 4091 microphones which it uses for measurement purposes and to tune and align speaker systems.

Because of time restrictions, Lo Ricco chose not to use lavalier microphones on the cast as it was quicker to fit headset microphones. 17 cast members were fitted with 6066 headsets and one - Nick Simpson-Deeks who played George – was fitted with a DPA 4061 miniature microphone because this worked better with his large beard.

“When I first started using DPA what I liked was the sound quality of the microphones, which was a noticeable improvement on what we had been using previously,” Lo Ricco explains. “They sound natural with a nice bright top end which isn’t harsh sounding. The Microdot adaptors are reliable and we use a few different types to match our Sennheiser and Shure radio system models. The new 6066 Headsets are being used with our Shure Axient Digital radio systems and I’ve been very happy with their performance. I’m keen to add some smaller lavaliers to our inventory so I will now be looking at the other products in the new 6000 Series.”

“The 6066 headset is made from a thinner, more flexible material compared to the older style headsets and it seemed to be more comfortable for the cast to wear for longer periods of time because it felt lighter on the head,” Lo Ricco says. “The ear attachments are more flexible and mouldable, too. Also, in our third venue, we were operating in a smaller black box space with speakers closer to the performers. Using the headsets made this manageable as there was sufficient headroom for 18 microphones, which at some points during the performance were all on at the same time.” Sunday in the Park with George garnered positive reviews during its run and was particularly praised for its superb band, its thoughtful orchestration and Marcello Lo Ricco’s crisp sound design. Lo Ricco has also recently worked on shows such as Les Misérables, Jekyll & Hyde and Kinky Boots (National Theatre, Melbourne), We Will Rock You and Strictly Ballroom (Princess Theatre, Tasmania) and Australian written musical theatre shows such as NED – A New Musical (Ulumbarra Theatre, Bendigo), Flowerchildren – The Mamas & Papas Story (Comedy Theatre, Melbourne) and PARIS – A Rock Odyssey (Melbourne Recital

Christie at the ITE Bicentennial Commemoration Dance Festival

Christie D4K40-RGB, Crimson Series, J Series and Pandoras Box present stunning visuals that complement performances by ITE students

Stunning visuals on the backdrop during the “Hallyu” segment of the concert using the Christie D4K40-RGB pure laser projector (Photo credit: Muhd Asyraaf B Muhd Yatim, @minimxlist) Christie’s projection and content management and processing solutions played an instrumental role in delivering a highly engaging dance extravaganza organized by the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) to commemorate 200 years of Singapore’s founding. “Milestones: The ITE Bicentennial Emblazon Edition” was held at the 1,460-seat auditorium in ITE headquarters and involved nearly 400 dancers comprising students from all three ITE colleges. They presented brilliant onstage performances that highlighted the key milestones of Singapore’s history and rich heritage, and envisions what citizens hope the nation to be in the future. The two-hour concert was presented in four chapters that captured the moods and messages of each milestone through dance, music and images. The performers’ slick dance moves were complemented by an array of stunning multimedia projections using a Christie D4K40-RGB pure

laser projector, a Christie Crimson WU25 3DLP laser projector, and four Christie Roadster HD20K-J 3DLP projectors, while content management and processing was achieved by the Christie Pandoras Box Quad Server and Compact Player. The laser projectors and Pandoras Box systems were provided by Christie Singapore and installed by its local partners Electro-Acoustics Systems and Total Solution Marketing respectively for this event. “The brief from our management this year was to focus on the Bicentennial narrative; and hence the usage of multimedia and projection was crucial in delivering the stories and messages more clearly to the masses,” said Christabel Lim, Producer of ITE Dance Emblazon and Head of Arts Management, Centre for Music and the Arts, ITE. “I’m glad that the projection and multimedia had succeeded in strongly supporting the dancers in their themes, and provided visual aids to era-specific pieces.”

Darker and more muted colours were used for the projections during the “Icon” segment (Photo credit: Muhd Asyraaf B Muhd Yatim, @minimxlist) Outside the auditorium, the Crimson WU25 displayed bright and dynamic images of the event’s titles on the wall above the main entrance, welcoming all guests and heightening their anticipation of the concert. Inside, the D4K40-RGB was deployed for main projections on the huge backdrop, while the double-stacked Roadster HD20K-Js covered the projections on two tall, narrow drapes on each side of the stage. The results were colourful and lifelike visuals that enhanced the overall look and feel of the wide-ranging dance performances and heightened the audience’s enjoyment of this concert. Joshua Chong, Technical Officer, Venue Management, CDE Division, ITE, said, “The Christie D4K40-RGB was simply amazing with its accurate colour reproduction and extremely high output from such a compact enclosure, which allowed it to punch through all the haze and stage lighting while still delivering a vibrant image. The Christie Crimson WU25 also amazed me with its high output and ease of use from such a compact enclosure. Colours were warm and vibrant without the ‘coldness’ that’s commonly seen in other laser projector brands.” The event, which took almost a year to materialize, had been wellreceived by audiences, who lauded its high artistic standards and production values. “The ITE management and the audience were very impressed on how far the artistic boundaries could be pushed,” Lim noted. “Many felt that multimedia was creative and acted as visual aids to understand the dance pieces better.”

This is the first time that our D4K40-RGB and Crimson WU25 projectors are used for a major event in Singapore, and we are delighted that all our projection and image processing solutions have captivated the audience with astounding visuals and added more realism and spectacle to the concert.”

VUE Provides High-definition Audio System for OPPO Product Launch Lavtech AV Technology selects VUE al-12 Acoustic Linear line arrays to meet OPPO’s high-demands

OPPO, the leading mobile phone manufacturer in China, recently released the latest Reno series at the Shanghai Mercedes Benz Arena. In addition to a new range of breakthrough features, the phone also supports High-Resolution audio and Dolby Atmos audio. Audiophiles may be familiar with OPPO as their Blu-Ray players supported SACD, DVD-Audio and Blu-Ray high resolution audio formats with superior digital-to-analog converters. OPPO required the live sound reinforcement at the conference to be of the highest definition to allow the audience to experience the outstanding sound of the new mobile phone. The A/V provider of this event, Lavtech AV Technology, selected VUE al-12 Acoustic Linear line arrays to meet the high-demands. “OPPO started business as an audio company, and it has a high-demand for sound. This conference needed to present many scenes in high

definition audio, in addition to playing back the sound of Dolby Atmos surround. There is also a section of the film to highlight the sound zoom function when recording. Therefore, the audio system should have excellent high-frequency definition and low-frequency dive ability, and at the same time have enough power,” said Wu Jiacheng, Technical Director of VUE China. The system Mr. Wu specified made use of both al-12 and al-8 line arrays along with hs-221s for the sub frequencies. “Because of the difficulty in processing and designing the beryllium diaphragm, there are not many manufacturers using this material. The beryllium tweeter has a higher definition than the conventional aluminium or titanium diaphragm, and it is exactly what this event needed. In addition, the low frequency of hs-221 subwoofer can dive to 25Hz, - people will feel that the low frequency comes from the bottom of the floor and has a deep feeling of diving.” he added.

The audience area of the conference included in-field seating facing the stage and a two-story auditorium that was fanned out. The sound system could not impair the audience’s line-of-sight, so the arrays were flown 22 meters above the stage. The main array consisted of 8 x al-12s suspended at the left and right side respectively. In addition, 4 x al-8s were hung on each side as front fills, covering the 4-meter area in the front. An array of 4 x al-8s on each side were suspended to function as monitors. A total of 12 hs-221 subwoofers were deployed with 2 al-12s stacked on-top for front fill at the sides of the stage. The system was driven by 12 VUE V3 amps and managed by SystemVUE management software. VUE China faced some challenges during the set-up. The Mercedes Benz Center does not allow equipment to be stacked on the catwalk and the cables on the floor must be hidden. The technical team decided to use Dante as both VUE’s amplifiers and speakers “speak” Dante. This allowed for the use of networking cables to reduce bulky cable runs making it easier to tuck them out of site. The installation was completed in a day by four technicians of VUE China, and system tuning was completed in half a day with SysTune and Smaart acoustic field analysis software.

Lavtech was very satisfied with the al-Class performance in such a sonically-critical environment. “We have been deeply impressed after listening to VUE,” commented General Manager Bai Xiaofei. “VUE was my first choice when OPPO proposed the audio demand and it turns out that this was the right choice.”

Certainly! Robe for Ubud Jazz Festival

As the event has gained status in the jazz world, the production values have steadily increased

The seventh Ubud Village Jazz Festival (UVJF) was staged at the Arma Art Museum in the fertile and beautiful Bali Uplands, Indonesia, welcoming a host of fabulous local and international artists. They and an enthusiastic audience embraced the true spirit of jazz presenting a wide range of genres and styles, celebrating the art of improvisation in a peaceful and harmonious setting, tagged CERTAINLY! temple architecture and constructed from traditional hand-crafted baskets flown from trusses and sculped into a special formation.

As the event has gained status in the jazz world, the production values have steadily increased. This year event curator Yuri Mahatma, gave a clear brief about the ambience he wanted to see and achieve on all of the stages, which was interpreted by set designer and artistic director Klick Swantara who also co-ordinated the production lighting design for the main ‘Giri’ Stage. This involved several Robe lighting fixtures – with 24 x LEDWash 300+s, six Pointes and six PicklePATTs – supplied as part of an equipment package from two local companies ETCetera Lighting and Lemmon.ID.

The lights were positioned all over the stage roof rigged on a series of trusses.

The general focus was on uniting the lighting and scenic elements in a seamless design that combines luminosity and colour with pixel mapping and projections onto the set which was inspired by Balinese

This looked incredible when lit from front or behind or when used as a projection surface where it took on a new 3D spatiality, especially as darkness fell. The whole set up also looked interesting and photogenic in its own right in the daylight.

The event’s goal was also to be eco-friendly and sustainable, so, where possible, local companies, services and products were sourced and utilised. All the stages were located outdoors and made use of the venue’s natural surroundings including traditional Balinese architecture and the extensive gardens. The visuality of each stage was carefully crafted to reflect an essence of the area’s renowned handicrafts. The LEDWash 300+ was an ideal luminaire that ticked all the ‘green’ boxes and was bright, punchy, small and lightweight … and perfect for

covering the stage area. The limited amount of fixture positions needed an adaptable moving light to cover all the base stage washes. The six Pointes were used to highlight and accent specific moments during some of the performances, a powerful ‘special’ for some of the more intense musical moments. The beams looked excellent and atmospheric, especially with haze present, and were great for solos. The PicklePATTs boosted the general visual ambience, their large dish like reflectors looking interesting and contrasting with the baskets that had been sculpted into the set. This dynamic backdrop also became a 3D effect after dark with the addition of projections which were mapped to fit the curved and shaped surface. Lighting was run from an Avolites Quartz console run by a team of operators from ETCetera Lighting.

This year’s Ubud Village Jazz festival – which has become among Bali’s most important cultural and community events – also coincided with the 74th Indonesian Independence Day celebrations, and was an enjoyable and invigorating experience with some superlative music and stunning lighting. “We were very happy to work with Anom (the event’s founder) to bring all parties together for this festival. It was a local first in Bali to have this number of Robe fixtures on stage and the feedback has been absolutely spectacular. We are very much looking forward to the next edition of Ubud Village Jazz Festival!” stated Jens Poehlker, MD of Robe Lighting Asia Pacific. “Confirmed for 14th and 15th August 2020, we have ‘certainly’ marked our calendars already!”
