FIRST WORDS

SEPTEMBER 2020

It is heartening to see some events coming back physically in the region. The Prolight + Sound Guangzhou that took place from August 21 – 24 concluded successfully with a total of 41,556 visitors and 677 exhibitors participating. It is impressive that China being the epicentre of the COVID-19 virus, has managed to pull this off. Not only did PLS Guangzhou become the first physical exhibition for our industry, but the country has also opened up for concerts and festivals attracting thousands of citizens. In this issue, we cover one of the first large scale EDM festival that was held in Shanghai, attracting approximately 2,000 visitors every day from July 10th to August 30th 2020. We have thankfully not heard of any spread of virus relating to these events. China’s strict regulations during the height of the virus and stringent lockdowns has saved the country sufficiently that the policymakers have confidently approved large scale events to proceed, with proper safety and health procedures put in place. There is, unfortunately, no guarantee with this unseen nemesis. New Zealand, which was the first country to open up fully, has seen the spread of the virus again, in Auckland - though I believe they will have it well under control soon. Australia is another country that had the virus under control until a sudden outbreak in Melbourne got the country reeling back to safety measures. Despite that, in this issue, we are actually fortunate to report some events that had taken place in the last couple of months in Australia. One of it is UNLOCKED in Perth where audience numbers were scaled down to comply with regulations, but 3,000 lucky people got the chance to enjoy the live music event.

MIDDLE EAST

CT Middle East Invest in the Latest Communication Technology different departments can prep and interface their various disciplines with the whole event in mind, not just their area of expertise. This, in turn, makes the whole setup and on-site testing a more fluid affair. Communications has become a lot more complex over the years, and now incorporates the distribution of timecode to video, audio and technical element control systems, along with timecode displays for clients and technicians. Having all these elements prepped prior to site makes a vast improvement technically on-site, as well as to the client. The comms system is the gel that holds an event together and is often the only element of technology that the client physically handles or utilises on an event."

L-R): Jentry Sierra, Robert Turner, Sherin Dsouza from the Integrated Networks team CTME now have a fully established Integrated Networks team who are on hand to deliver specialist event communications across our wide range of projects. The department which is headed up by Rob Turner has some of the Middle East's well known and respected Integrated Network professionals. Turner has been working alongside Middle East Managing Director Andy Reardon to develop this new division strategically, ensuring we can deliver the right service for our clients. Reardon explains, "It was important we had the right people to set up and run this new division, and I am pleased to announce we now have a team of highly experienced and established Integrated Network professionals. The team consists of several key players who have a long history of working together after originally working at Delta Sound before the company was taken over last year." The team have years of experience in event communications across various sectors such as corporate, entertainment, sporting events, virtual events and much more. Their experience across multiple events in the region has given them an excellent understanding of a number of venues in and around the GCC. Turner adds, "This knowledge is really valuable, especially when helping clients during site visits and in the planning prepping stages with the other departments." Integrated Networks has never been considered the most exciting part of an event and can often be overlooked in the quoting stages. Still, with ever-advancing technology, it offers clients so many added benefits and can facilitate a more seamless event approach than ever before. Turner states, "With our Riedel (MediorNet) approach, all

Over the past five months, CT has been investing in the latest communications technology from twoway radios, event networks, signal distribution and much more. CT now house a variety of leading communication brands such as Riedel, ClearCom, Luminex, GlenSound to name a few. Turner explains, "We wanted to ensure we invested in the best communication technology available in the market while also ensuring the equipment would work within the infrastructure of venues, broadcast and event spaces around the MENA region." CT globally purchase as a group. Reardon added, "Purchasing as a group ensures our clients get the same products and services across all our regions. We pride ourselves on consistency." From a few Riedel Bolero belt packs in stand-alone mode to a fully incorporated matrix system, CT's communication system is tailored to the client's needs and easily scalable. Turner explains, "This allows us to send out a system that we can easily add equipment to without having to rewire/program the setup again. Most of the larger events in the Middle East require a fair amount of radios and wireless communication, due to the size of the sites. With the radio channels often being interfaced into the communications, we can then easily scale up the footprint that the communications can cover, and in turn, increase the area that the show call/stage management teams can communicate in. The radios also give us the ability to increase the personnel count on a communications group/ channel." Turner rounds up, "I am very much looking forward to seeing this new division of CT flourish. I think we can bring something new and exciting to the Comms/Network market." www.ctme.co

Duskin Rental Chooses SIXTY82

The kick-off order for the Chiba based branch, Duskin Rental Chiba Event Center, containing over 400m2 of STAGE82 Hexa decks, large amounts of legs, railings, stairs and accessories, was recently delivered. Mr. Kishira, Managing Director of the Chiba branch commented; “Key points in why our organisation decided to choose SIXTY82 over other brands are the high loading capacity of 750Kg per m2, the unique RFID traceability and the options such as modular stairs increasing simplicity for users as well as decreasing our investment while increasing our returns. Having SDJ nearby also makes communications easier, while also allowing fast service and having stock available quickly from their Tokyo warehouse. With over 300 outlets throughout the country, Duskin is one of the largest rental franchises in Japan. Spearheaded from their headquarters in Osaka, the Duskin chain of rental outlets are known for their expansive and diverse product inventory suitable for a broad range of purposes. Triggered by a growing demand for staging in general and some large events, the organisation decided to venture into staging as well. Due to the nature of their business, the criteria for choosing the right brand were: safety, user friendliness and versatility, as each branch not only offers complete set-up for its customers, but also to simply pick

up stages and handling the set-up by themselves. Based on this and of course economics, an extensive internal survey was initiated which eventually resulted in SIXTY82 Doughty Japan being selected to become the supplier for Duskin rental across all of their 300 branches, with the STAGE82 staging series. While the impressive Duskin STAGE82 fleet has seen some use, during the COVID19 outbreak events in Japan have suffered as well. While Duskin is waiting for the industry to recover they are investing considerable resources into simulations used to train and educate their personnel in the use of their new STAGE82 decks. As soon as the first big events hit Japan, Duskin will be completely ready and they will have the equipment and expertise to back them up. Owning the largest quantity of STAGE82 in all of Japan, Duskin are on their way to becoming true specialists when it comes to stagedecks and can handle events of nearly any size. Novatech Provides GLP Solutions for Isagenix Celebration 2020

Isagenix held its annual flagship ‘experience’, Celebration 2020, earlier this year at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. The motivational presentation featured a series of powerful training sessions over the three days, with concert style technical production providing the backdrop and the wow factor. Executing agency, CG Creative, tasked LD Paul Whitby and Novatech Creative Event Technology to once again produce an impactful learning environment with a particular focus on amplifying the stage. The powerful lighting inventory included large quantities of GLP’s award-winning X4 Bar 20 battens and ever popular JDC1 hybrid strobes—part of an inventory of more than 300 GLP fixtures held by Novatech. In fact, the company did much to pioneer the brand in Australia when it acquired the original impression 90, around a decade ago. In so doing, it became the first production house in the country to feature GLP products in its inventory. Back at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, the focal point of the imaginative design was a series of chevron trusses, packed with fixtures, including 32 of the X4 Bar 20s. These were primarily used as eye candy for a landscape audience, but they also created high impact when directed backwards at the drape during video rolls, to accentuate the chevron design even further. In addition, Novatech also supplied eight GLP hybrid strobes for use on the front truss, with a further 10 JDC1’s located on the room trusses, where 24 GLP Impression X4’s also provided overhead beam movement throughout the auditorium.

ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com

All GLP products are distributed in Australia by Showtools International, who are serviced out of the manufacturer’s Asian office. This was Novatech’s second year delivering all technical production (lighting, vision and sound) for Isagenix Celebration Australia and New Zealand through its client, CG Creative. The Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre was the venue on both occasions. Michael Muenz, Manager of GLP Asia, said: “We are grateful to Novatech for their support, and for increasingly educating and introducing their customers to the creative possibilities of our products.” Image credit: CG Creative and Isagenix www.glp.de

PouchNATION Launches IndieGogo for Production of New Temperature Wristband

PouchNATION, a leader in crowd management and behavioural analytics technologies, has launched a new IndieGogo campaign to help raise funds to enable mass production of its new real-time body temperature monitoring wristband, PouchPASS. The wearable device was developed to aid workplaces as they cope with COVID19 and monitoring of workforce health and safety. PouchNATION was originally a guest registration, cashless payments, activity tracking, social engagement, and access control platform for events. Over a 5 year period, the company sold more than 3.8m RFID enabled wristbands to ensure seamless access and crowd control at some of Southeast Asia’s largest gatherings. Faced with the onset of COVID19 and utilising a recent study conducted by the World Health Organisation (completed in China and Europe) indicating that 89.1% of COVID19 patients had a fever as the major symptom, PouchNATION decided to swiftly pivot. They quickly developed PouchPASS, a continuous wrist-based temperature monitor that provides continuous temperature monitoring via a wearable wristband that provides convenience, contact management, and data recording for employers to provide assurance to staff and their customers. Leveraging on its experience in building mobile applications and platforms as well as managing large amounts of data, PouchNATION has developed both a personal mobile application and a dashboard for community users that enables live situational reporting.

ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com

PouchPASS works by providing continuous, remote monitoring of temperatures through a wristband linked to users' smartphones via Bluetooth. A central platform operated by the company can provide transparency on any change of conditions within the workplace with real-time alerts triggered for users in the event someone experiences a significant rise in temperature. The technology also ensures accurate contact history within the workplace with geolocation technology on the basis of strict privacy conditions and user permission. The crowdfunding campaign is aimed at securing funding to accelerate the production of the new real-time temperature monitoring wearable devices. Similar in size and appearance to fitness monitoring wearables, the company has experienced a surge in demand, selling over 5,000 units since its soft launch in July. It now expects to ship over 100,000 units over the next quarter. The company has already secured several high profile partnerships including the PETRONAS Sepang Racing Team as it tours racing tracks around Spain and globally in an effort to keep its staff safe. PouchPASS is offering a real-time solution for businesses across the construction, tourism, education, sports, manufacturing, and events sectors as they adapt to the new reality of COVID-19 and the need to perform temperature checks as required by new government regulations. The PouchPASS wristband temperature monitor is currently on sale at an early-bird rate of $21 (USD) per unit. The prices decrease to $13 (USD) per unit for larger packages.Speaking about the IndieGogo campaign, CEO of PouchNATION Ilya Kravtsov said:

JBL Professional Announces New VTX B28 Subwoofer

The VTX B28 is JBL Professional’s next-generation dual 18-inch subwoofer, designed to complement the company’s flagship VTX full-range sound reinforcement systems, and capable of delivering uncompromised low-frequency performance, even for the most demanding shows on the planet. Differential Drive technology endows the drivers with exceptional performance, while patented SlipStream™ port technology offers improved airflow and reduced audible turbulence at any operating level.

With versatile mounting and configuration options, the B28 fits seamlessly into any system. The streamlined, two-point rigging system uses integrated levers and locks, avoiding traditional quick release pins and retaining cables that can get damaged or lost, or limit the potential configurations. This enables the B28 to be stacked vertically or horizontally, using the independent sets of feet on the bottom and sides, while the spring-loaded design ensures there is no rattling during operation. Universal M20 mounts interface with supported VTX accessories for constructing complete ground stacked arrays. NL4 connectors on both the front and rear of the unit enable convenient wiring in standard or cardioid configurations. The B28 could meet the most demanding applications. The subwoofer’s configurability, full suite of accessories, and software applications make the B28 a solid investment and an outstanding performer for tour sound providers and rental companies.

The VTX B28 houses a new, Integrated rigging system that follows in the footsteps of the innovative and well-received A8 and A12 rigging designs, and allows the B28 to be suspended in omnidirectional or cardioid arrays of up to 16 enclosures. The rigging and a comprehensive collection of tour-tough accessories make the B28 a flexible solution for both mobile and installed sound system applications. The B28 integrates seamlessly with HiQNet Performance Manager and Line Array Calculator (LAC) software, and features the same industrial design as A- and B-Series loudspeakers, giving the entire system a cohesive look. At the core of the B28 are two JBL Differential Drive 2288H-M 18-inch woofers, engineered for improved linearity, efficiency and extra-long excursion. The combination of the 2288H-M drivers and the large, central, flared port deliver superior low-frequency output without distortion or artifacts—even at elevated SPL. FEA-optimized integral bracing eliminates inter-cabinet standing waves, improves rigidity, and simplifies the structural design to create the lightest, yet strongest, possible product.

The New Reality of Live Events and Virtual Studios Heightened by LED Video

Elite Multimedia Productions Virtual Studio - Nashville High-resolution technology elements are working together to provide new, creative possibilities for filmmakers and live event production teams looking to push the bounds of imagination Technology developments in filmmaking have deeply broadened the spectrum of what is visually possible and have also taken the live event experience to all new heights. With the implementation of highresolution LED video environments that have become the backbone of such award-winning production designs as Star Wars: The Mandalorian, production houses across the nation have begun to look at applying this type of technology for the benefit of their clients. Such is the case with PixelFLEX rental network partners Mountain View Staging and Elite Multimedia Productions, who have taken their live and virtual event capabilities into a new realm of possibilities using production designs with LED video. “We saw how they were using the camera-tracking technology in conjunction with LED video and an Unreal Effects Engine to film the Mandalorian series and we thought this was something we could offer to our corporate clients to make their live events even more exciting,” began Robert Johnson, Vice President of Operations, Mountain View Staging. “We own a lot of LED video panels and have studios with cameras set up in our warehouses across the nation, so it was a great way to pivot to the new reality we are living in to continue to meet the demands for large-scale live events done in a unique way.”

“Once the shutdown’s happened, we saw that live streaming was going to be a vital component to keeping the production industry going and we needed to find a way to take advantage of that,” said Kenny Mason, Production Manager, Elite Multimedia Productions. “Since we already had a demo room with production gear ready, it was a natural progression to transform the space into a virtual production studio.”

The adoption of new technology solutions in a live event atmosphere can often lead to a bit of concern over its expected performance capabilities. By understanding the full scope of the design and how the technology components all work together, the practical application of an LED production environment can completely transform the experience for everyone involved. “From an LED video perspective, we don’t just start with a product, we start with the size of the room,” added Ben Kristy, Vice President of Production, Mountain View Staging. “Whether its corporate production or cinema, the camera is king, so we first need to identify which shots are necessary to identify the right LED video pixel-pitch. While there have been scenarios where we are working with a flat wall doing tight shots, it all really depends on the storyboard and what shots are happening.”

Mountain View Staging Virtual Studio - San Francisco “We see corporate events becoming more of a hybrid where you will have some people at home and others in remote studio locations,” continued Johnson. “Using this type of camera-tracking technology in a multi-camera shoot, we can then sub people in on the LED video wall to create a final product that appears to have everyone combined in one space. We really believe people will enjoy this because it is so unique and different, and completely changes the way our corporate clients can present their brand.” Like so many industries around the world that have been affected by the shutdown’s caused by the Coronavirus pandemic, the Live Events industry has also taken a big hit. With production companies now struggling for a way to bring large groups together, virtual event spaces with a high production-value backed by LED video have become a popular solution. “As we were searching for ways to reach new vertical markets and clients at Mountain View Staging, creating studio spaces in our warehouses where we could control all the production assets was a logical solution,” admitted Kristy. “We now have studio spaces in Salt Lake City, Washington D.C., and San Francisco which includes a 10’x30’ PixelFLEX LED wall.”

ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com

“PixelFLEX is a great technology to use for this application because there are so many options for a video design, including flat, curved or LED floor panels,” added Johnson. “High pixel pitch and resolution are also key, but you do have a little flexibility depending on the needs of the project, so having the versatility of the PixelFLEX product line allows you to easily find the right solution.” “I think even after we start to see municipalities starting to open back up, we’ll still have those who aren’t quite ready to go out just yet,” said Mason. “Our space at Elite Multimedia, opens up some many other avenues of using online tools where fans can watch a live stream and actually interact with the artists for such things as songs they might like to see played. It really creates a different way of going to a show.” It is often in a time of crisis, that the course of an industry can change focus and find new ways to innovate for the future. Taking advantage of the technology developments brought about by the need to go virtual, both Mountain View Staging and Elite Multimedia Productions have found a creative and expedient solution for their clients. “In the last few years, Elite has started seeing more and more music artists using social media platforms to back away from the traditional system of how they get discovered, and this type of production studio gives them a direct route to take their online presence one step further,” added Mason. “Even when the full live event industry is

Mountain View Staging Virtual Studio - San Francisco safely able to open back up, a lot of newer artists will still be able to use something like this to grow their fanbase which can then lead to selecting the right touring gear when it’s time to hit the road.” “When our clients are familiar with producing top-quality live events, having to move to everyone using a low-res video conference app is not a viable long-term option,” explained Johnson. “At Mountain View Staging, we have the technology, the expertise, and the live event platform to really make a corporate brand stand out to their clients and employees.” In a production environment where imagination is the only creative limit, the potential for what is possible continues to expand rapidly with the technology. Being able to be in any place at any time, used to be an idea of the past, but it has now become the reality of today.

Beach. We can could get a little crazy with all that’s possible, such as setting up a squareshaped, outdoor LED video wall for a drivein event with four sides of LED video where cars can park on all four sides and a lot more people can enjoy the show.” “While our business approach is not really focused towards filmmaking, we have to understand the latest in technology developments to bring new possibilities to our clients for their events,” concluded Johnson. “We are always trying to be on the edge of what is possible to show people that there are more innovative ways to do events given our new reality.” pixelflexled.com

“We want our MVS clients to know that we can now put them in their product,” explained Kristy. “For example, if you’re Northface, and you want to show off your new winter line, we can use this technology to put you on the top of Mount Everest. If you’re a video game developer, and you’re launching a new World War II video game, we can put you on Omaha

Speaking at the conclusion of the fair, Judy Cheung, Deputy General Manager of Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd remarked: “In light of the ongoing global pandemic, we are pleased to have received full support from the industry. In keeping with the trend of digitalisation, this year we channelled additional resources to facilitate business online – helping exhibitors market their products more effectively and easing the sourcing process for buyers. For the first time, the entire exhibition, including new products, training courses and seminars was broadcasted. We hope this new “offline + online” experience made it easier for industry players to network, learn and explore business opportunities in the resurgent market.”

in the industry and high visitor quality, which is the main reason why we always choose to exhibit here,” said ChunLin Liu, Vice General Manager, BeiJing HXTC Technology Co Ltd “Prolight + Sound Guangzhou closely matches the business sectors we have been focusing on this year, including lighting, audio and video products used in KTV and hotels. We have developed various new products, such as our first “cloud” karaoke room, which combines traditional karaoke with entertainment, interactive games and a DJ experience. We are launching these new products on the PLSG platform because it’s the leading exhibition for the industry, not just in Guangzhou but also other regions. The exhibition gathered a lot of industry professionals from different product categories, so it is a good opportunity for us to expand our business,” said Chuang Liu, Project Director, Huoshan 3S Digital.

Besides an extensive collection of the latest products, PLSG also compiled a variety of educational programmes. This included the PLSG Annual Training Course, the Acoustic Block Forum ‘Opportunities and Challenges of Audio Technology in Artificial Intelligence’, the 10th Advanced Audio Forum, and a Carving Art Exhibition. To help industry practitioners in the post COVID-19 era, safety topics dealing with the reopening of live events were added to the programme. Both attendees and expert speakers were impressed by how the events delivered valuable information and created opportunities to network and exchange market intelligence. Another unique part of the fringe programme was the Outdoor Line Array, which gathered 20 professional audio brands to showcase the sound qualities of their audio systems to professionals and audio enthusiasts in real time. PLSG earns industry support with positive feedback from exhibitors and visitors In this challenging year for the industry, the organisers worked hard to provide channel players with valuable opportunities to pursue their business objectives, with the majority of participants reporting favourably on their participation. “Our company has participated at PLSG many times in the past and this year we are showcasing our microphone products for teleconferencing. Although there have been challenges, the pandemic has also generated some opportunities for our business because of the shift towards digital media and the increased use of virtual meetings. Our microphones and other products match the demands in this market. Even though this year’s fair scale is not as big as previous editions, the clients who have visited our booth to discuss products and place orders have met our expectations. PLSG is a well-developed trade fair with a good reputation

Buyer and visitor DaiYuan Wang, CEO/CTO, Pandora Audio & Video Technology Serve Co Ltd commented, “This is my 10th visit to PLSG. I continue to come because the exhibition is a great place to find out about industry trends. At every edition there are new products, systems, ideas, training courses and presentations from industry experts. Guangdong is a large production base of audio and lighting. Thanks to its location, the fair is not only the largest fair in China, but also the most professional one. You can find a lot of innovative high quality products from Guangdong, which cannot be seen in other places. Although the fair scale has been impacted by the pandemic, it was a bold decision by the organisers to hold the exhibition this year. The fair has provided me with the opportunity to communicate indepth with new and old industry peers, allowing everyone to re-build their connections and exchange information and find new avenues for business.” Extra health care and hygiene precautions implemented The organisers strictly followed the local government’s protection guidelines and implemented additional safety measures to ensure the health and safety of every participant. This included: real identity pre-registration, entry checkpoints to verify the digital health code of all participants, and onsite temperature scans. Frequent sanitisation of facilities and distancing measures were also implemented. The 19th edition of Prolight + Sound Guangzhou will be held from 16 – 19 May 2021 at China Import and Export Fair Complex in Guangzhou, China. www.prolightsound-guangzhou.com

126 SE Audiotechnik Speakers at EV EDM Festival Shanghai Happy Valley Despite nasty weather conditions, speakers provide outstanding performance

China opens the festival season – and in fact more or less reopens the whole event industry after the COVID-19 shutdown with a bang. The EV EDM Festival 2020 at the Happy Valley Theme Park in Shanghai is one of the first big events celebrating electronic dance music – not only in China but in fact worldwide since more than 100 days. SE Audiotechnik is the exclusive PA partner for the EV EDM Festival in Shanghai Theme Park Happy Valley where more than 2,000 visitors were expected every day from July 10th to Aug. 30th 2020. Every seriously meant EDM party challenges the gear requiring a high sound pressure level, a robust low end and – especially in China – a clean and nice looking stage. But if the party lasts more than 50 days and takes action during the rain season in Shanghai, you have to find a reliable partner with a good plan and real workhorses when it comes to gear. The choice fell on SE Audiotechnik with its super-compact, yet powerful M-Line exclusively. Overall more than 126 Speakers have been utilized on the main stage.

ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com

A total of 36 M-F3A PRO full-range speakers and 32 M-F3A PRO FS flysubs were rigged – an array of 18 M-F3A PRO are supported by 2x8 M-F3A PRO FS on both sides of the stage in order to keep the sound pressure level high enough up to the last row. Besides excellent sound the requirement was to integrate the system discretely into the stage design - thus the M-F3A PRO could play at its full strength. By fitting 8 high-efficiency 2.8″ neodymium mid-frequency drivers, and 7 1″ direct radiation dome tweeters in an element with a front face no bigger than an A4 sized piece of paper, it's safe to say that you can't get much smaller if you expect the same impressive result. The additional plus points is the light weight of only 8.3 kg per M-F3A PRO module and just 25 kg per flysub make it possible to hang the whole array directly from the frame of the main stage structure without a lot of hassle and manpower. There is no EDM without a substantial low frequency range coverage. A total of 24 subwoofers were used; eight of the 21” B21s below each array and another eight in front of the stage extending the frequency range of the system below 30 Hz.

LIVE

Due to the extra-wide stage design, the coverage right in front of the stage has been filled with two sets of two S15 PRO subs and two M-F3A PROs stacked on top – one set to the left and one set to the right of the 8 B21 subwoofers in front of the stage. As you can only perform as good as you can hear yourself on stage, 12 SMX 12A stage monitors were placed evenly positioned at the lip of the stage together with another set of two S15 PRO subwoofers and three M-F3A PROs stacked left and right of the DJ table. As the FOH could not be positioned directly in front of the stage due to the needed space for the audience and had to be protected by the nasty weather conditions, two more M-F3A PROs were positioned on both sides of the mixing console in order to ensure a balanced sound as the

console was positioned closer to the right array and the rain protection dampened the high frequencies a lot. All that sums up to 126 SE Audiotechnik speakers used at the Shanghai Happy Valley EV EDM Festival – what a nice setup to celebrate that great life sign of the event industry! “We are very pleased with the outcome!” comments Xiong Le, Sales Director for China. “From the smooth setup process to the flawless daily performance – we only get the best feedback from everyone involved. Our small M-Line speakers prove again, that they easily keep up with all the competition still following the idea “the bigger, the better”. We are looking forward to support many other major events this year with our high-performance, worry-free sound solutions!” se-audiotechnik.de

Australia’s Industry Donates Time, Expertise and Gear for Ekka Despite being hardest hit, Industry shows support and resilience

Brisbane’s iconic Ekka show was cancelled this year due to COVID-19 but in a bid to lift spirits, the fireworks show went ahead thanks to the donation of fireworks, audiovisual, lighting and programming by Skylighter Fireworks, NW Group, Chameleon Touring Systems and JLX Productions Pty Ltd.

devastating bushfires), and Max saw this as an opportunity to give back to the community and, as importantly, bring his team together to work on the project. Both sentiments resonated greatly with Ray and the “need to give our people some respite from the endless cancellations and floor-sweeping.”

The Fullscreen Fireworks Show, presented by 7NEWS Brisbane, was specially designed for television audiences to stay home and watch on the telly for the best vantage point.

“Mental health and well-being within our industry are so important and something as simple as having a gig to do in times like this cannot be underestimated,” added Ray. “Once I drilled into how they were looking to incorporate and deliver the technical backbone, we soon realised they needed some assistance and happily offered our services.”

Over fifty fireworks, lighting, sound and vision crew worked on the event – another example of Australia’s industry donating their time, expertise and gear to a worthy cause even though they have been hardest hit by COVID-19. NW Group’s involvement in the event came about whilst Ray Moss, General Manager for NW Group in Queensland, was having a catch up with Tony Laffan who heads up the entertainment department at Ekka. “Tony mentioned Max Brunner from Skylighter Fireworks had offered to donate a pyro show on the eve of what would have been Ekka 2020 given the event had to cancel due to COVID restrictions, and in passing that 7 News Brisbane were in negotiation to take the show live to air,” explained Ray. “Ekka has been a loyal NW client for around 16 years so the decision was really a no brainer for us to be involved.” Skylighter, like the rest of the entertainment industry, is in full shutdown due to COVID gathering restriction (not to mention losing the back end of trading in 2019 through mass cancellations during the

ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com

Within 24 hours NW Group came to the realisation that what started as a single firework display in the middle of the arena had grown considerably. With that, given the profile it was fast attracting, it needed to be done properly so they not only volunteered to provide audio playback, mastering and time-code distribution but also began planning to add a lighting element. Josh Finlayson, Luke Symons and Cam Walker made up the audio team with NW Group providing multi-track playback from a dual redundant QLab system keying via midi from a Yamaha QL1 console. NW distributed time code; SMPTE to lighting and FSK to pyro, as well as the audio track to Ch 7 who did a full OB of the 6pm news bulletin from the site. For those that don’t know much about modern television production, it’s not often they come out of the studio these days so the guys knew this was building to be something special.

NW also provided vision monitors and distribution to the operators, taking program splits from the Ch7 OB truck, and provided show comms across operations fully interfaced back to the Ch7 studio and producer, along with two-way radios to keep the onsite team connected.

wielded his magic consulting closely with Max who had personally collated the music and pyro pre-vis to come up with an awesome design and fully pre-programmed show to enhance what was already a pretty full show with pyro alone.

“Given the obvious benefits to the well-being of having as many people involved as possible, I called Tim Allder at Chameleon Touring Brisbane and Jason Raft from JLX Productions to see if they would like to be involved and both immediately said yes,” said Ray. “Their contribution and response was amazing, having all worked together on so many great projects in the past everyone jumped back into work mode from our COVID slumber. It was awesome to see our talented teams in full flight - which feels like forever since they had the opportunity.”

Both the pyro and lighting were designed from the ground up for television as opposed to the standard Ekka approach of programming for a close-proximity live audience, with all pre-visualisations from key camera locations. The event was live audience free meaning the closed site allowed for larger than normal pyro.

The one thing that wasn’t made a big deal of in the media, is that all production and pyrotechnic elements were fully 100% donated despite some of the keyboard warrior calls questioning the cost and ‘waste of money’. This was done by all involved to create some happiness and improve mental health within the industry and community at large, an objective that was more than achieved.

The theme of the show was centred on the heart shape flares in the middle that Max had designed to tie in with a feeling of love for the Ekka community, and the Ch7 theme of Love You Queensland. Jason ran with this adding lighting FX to give added dimension to the heart as well as set the canvas pre-show and as always, pulled it off to tee. The pyro will always be the hero of this type of event however without a doubt, the lighting additions and Jason’s FX made it that bit more special. Chameleon prepped the lighting to minimise time onsite with the four rolling trusses fully pre-rigged with fixtures and distro to be completely plug and play – although the heart took a bit longer.

“It always amazes me that people and businesses whose livelihoods have been so devastated by the impacts of the current pandemic can continue to dig deeper and give back,” remarked Ray. “It makes me proud to be part of this great industry of ours.”

Lighting gear was eight Claypaky Stormy CC, 20 x Sharpy Beam, 12 x Sharpy Wash, 14 x Pixelline 4, 12 x Martin MAC Quantum Wash, 12 x Claypaky Scenius Profile, 24 x ShowPRO IP Hex Pars, 40 x Martin MAC 101 and 14 x ShowPRO LED Duets. Control was MA Lighting grandMA2.

After a quick download from Ray of what he was envisaging (let’s remember he’s an audio guy!), Tim offered a stock list and Jason

“Echoing Ray’s comments below, our motivation was about not only providing a brief reprieve to Queensland but also bringing our staff

together again,” added Max Brunner from Skylighter Fireworks. “Sixteen pyrotechnicians worked on the display in the lead-up and on the day. The feedback about the positive effects on their mental health was great and has had a lasting effect. For us, that was just one of the major factors in donating this show. It was also a way for Ekka to stay at the forefront of people’s minds.” The whole site was activated, so in all 85 modules over eight launch sites were used including rooftops, light towers and the arenas. Over 2000kgs of fireworks were used delivering approximately 20,000 individual effects. The fireworks used normally are 50mm but because the team had the entire RNA showgrounds they could go up to 150mm. This allowed the fireworks to reach upwards of 270m, giving views all around the city. Speciality shells were used including hearts, smiley faces, butterfly patterns and many more. Significant wireless technology was used with a backup of hard cabling and a third analogue timecode broadcaster. The show was built specifically for a broadcast audience, so a full simulation was created first. This allowed Jason and his team at JLX to not only see the show but also time the burst of the fireworks to the change of lighting sequences in real-time. The simulation also allowed the Ch7 broadcast directors to change cameras for important moments like the 80m x 70m red heart in the middle of the arena. Allowing this type of collaboration took the display to the next level, with subtle moments of lights and pyro changing at the same time and the fact broadcast could pick up on every moment.

AUSTRALIA

The Electric Canvas Lights up the National Carillon Christie Crimson projectors and Modula Pi servers create impactful projections

The National Carillon, a 50-meter high musical instrument, is situated in Australia’s national capital, Canberra. It sits on Aspen Island in Lake Burley Griffin, connected to the northern foreshore by a pedestrian bridge. It was a gift from the British Government to the people of Australia to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the national capital and was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1970. Fitted with 57 bronze bells, the National Carillon is played on a regular basis during the year by both local and visiting carillonists. It is often used to celebrate national days and performances are staged in conjunction with other events such as Australia Day. The iconic landmark’s unique tower-like structure makes it an ideal venue for outdoor projections at night. It was for this reason that Christie’s valued Australian partner, The Electric Canvas (TEC) – well known for its experience and expertise in large scale events – was approached by the National Capital Authority (NCA) to develop architectural projections on the Carillon’s façade in support of National Reconciliation Week 2020. Each year in Australia from 27 May to 3 June, National Reconciliation Week celebrates and builds on the respectful relationships shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other Australians. The eight-day celebration is an ideal opportunity for all Australians to

learn about their shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to explore how everyone can contribute to achieving Reconciliation in their country. With the exception of the Carillon projections, National Reconciliation Week 2020 was celebrated entirely online in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. The theme for this year was ‘In This Together’, which highlighted the importance of coming together to support each other in a shared experience, whether in a crisis or in reconciliation. Laying the groundwork TEC surveyed the Carillon and created a wireframe model in order to plan a projection layout. The structure was to be activated over eight consecutive nights during National Reconciliation Week, with each night dedicated to a different Indigenous organization or in observation of key dates. Over little more than two weeks, TEC’s creative department engaged with eight separate organizations, as well as Indigenous artists, in order to develop their pieces for projection. Their experience working with Indigenous and culturally sensitive content was a valuable asset for the project.

“Culturally sensitive work with a lot of stakeholders involved usually takes months,” says Peter Milne, Managing Director, TEC, “but we decided to take on the challenge. The first step was briefing the participants and explaining how a projection on this type of structure works; it’s not just putting someone’s painting up on a flat wall. The Carillon is 50 meters high and made of three triangular columns that are six meters wide on each facet.” The design process was also challenged by the need to consider viewing angles and distances that varied from 100 to over 850 meters, around the shores of Lake Burley Griffin. Key messaging had to consider all the possible vantage points, and TEC had to educate the contributing artists and stakeholders on what the opportunities and limitations were with regard to the content. As the COVID-19 situation improved in Australia, the NCA made the decision to reopen Aspen Island to limited numbers of people during the event, so TEC had to allow for very close proximity viewing. “This created an opportunity to present something more intimate, with a lot of detail, that could be seen close-up,” relates Milne. “The tower locations were chosen to provide a clean shot at an internal facet. This allowed us to project text and explanatory items on an internal facet that you couldn’t see from anywhere else.”

Bright and impactful projections With all preparatory work completed, the next important step was the selection of appropriate projection systems that could deliver the optimal visuals at all vantage points. TEC chose to deploy 12 Christie Crimson 3DLP laser projectors from its fleet to deliver the bright, impactful projections onto the Carillon. “We decided that the Christie Crimson projectors were the most suitable for this task. Not only are they engineered to withstand the rigours of demanding, high-usage applications with an IP5X-sealed, solid-state laser light source, they are also energy efficient and deliver a superior colour gamut. These make the Crimson projectors the perfect tool to highlight the brilliant hues of the content and the important messaging that it conveyed,” says Milne. TEC set up four projection towers, with each of them housing three 25,000 lumen Christie Crimson WU25 laser projectors running in portrait mode. Media was handled by TEC’s three units of Modulo Kinetic media server system with full hot back up. After an additional night of projector alignment, TEC conducted a content review for stakeholders, which also provided an opportunity for drone footage to be captured by the NCA.

With no shelter on Aspen Island, it would be an unpleasant place to work in cold and windy conditions. Fortunately, TEC was able to set up their site office in the comfort of the viewing gallery atop the Carillon and, from there, the operator could monitor the entire 360-degree projection from cameras mounted in each of the projection towers. Sending a strong message across the country On each night, the Carillon showcased a different image overlayed by important messages about the nation’s journey to Reconciliation. The first illustration that kicked off this year’s event was titled ‘Reconciliation, a continuing journey of growth and togetherness’ by Nikita Ridgeway, with narrative created by Reconciliation Australia. The artwork’s vibrant colours and design elements represented Australians together on a national journey of Reconciliation, while paying homage to the past and recognizing the present. Images projected on the national landmark on the other nights, created by various talented Australian artists, also delivered strong messages of bringing people together from across the country for conversation and to truly understand what Reconciliation means. The bright and beautiful projections resonated deeply with many Australians throughout the event.

manageable weight make them easy to work with and deploy in unusual configurations, their impressive colour-space renders a greatly expanded pallet, opening the door to new creative opportunities.” Likewise, the NCA and all stakeholders were also extremely happy and impressed with the brightness and clarity of the projections. The amazing projections onto the National Carillon was a great exercise for the team at TEC, who were able to break the bonds of their COVID-19induced confinement and have the chance to do what they love best! Congratulating the TEC team on the completion of this project, Michael Bosworth, executive vice president, Enterprise, Christie, says, “Despite the restrictions brought about by COVID-19, Peter and his team have once again risen to the occasion and delivered spectacular visuals at the National Carillon that all Australians can be proud of. We are also delighted that our Crimson Series projectors provided brilliant and intensely colorful images that encouraged all Australians to reflect upon the part they play – whether big or small – on our journey towards Reconciliation.” www.theelectriccanvas.com.au www.christiedigital.com www.modulo-pi.com

Expressing his team’s satisfaction with the quality of the projections, Milne comments, “The Christie Crimson projectors have quickly become our platform of choice. Not only does their form-factor and

Robe Gets UNLOCKED in Perth

Crew and Artists delighted to be involved in the live music event

Smiles and high spirits abounded at the HBF Stadium in Perth, Australia at the country’s first large scale live music event since March! UNLOCKED, staged mid-July, was possible due to the Western Australian state lockdown entering Phase 5 on the 27th of June, and Zaccaria Concerts’ brainchild ‘Castaway’ and VenuesWest seized the opportunity to present a sizzling array of Western Australian electronic / DnB talent including Crooked Colours, ShockOne with Reija Lee, Slumberjack and Tina Says. The venue was sold out to an enthusiastic audience of just under 3000 people, reduced to 50% of its normal capacity and run under new safe operating procedures (SOP) regulations. Lighting and LED screens were supplied by Perth-based rental and production specialists Showscreens, headed by brothers Ryan and Bryce Varley, who dipped into their 150 plus stock of Robe moving lights choosing BMFL Spots, MegaPointes and Spiiders to be the core of the lighting rig. They needed powerful luminaires to make high-impact impressions and be versatile enough to offer each artist a distinctive and different ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com

production style and look for the evening as well as looking super-cool on camera as the show was live-streamed to reach a wider audience. The event encapsulated a moment in time of the pandemic and was hugely well received by music fans and all associated elements of the live event industry that has been starved of live action for the past five months! Showscreens is a regular technical provider for Zaccaria Concerts. Ryan, Bryce and the team had “an open brief for the production design” of this highly significant show. With Robe as the main moving light of choice for their normally busy schedule – which includes providing lighting, video, staging and rigging for everything from corporate events to festivals, music shows and concert tours – these three types of fixtures were a natural choice for this event. A total of 20 x Robe BMFL Spots, 24 x Spiider LED wash beams and 20 x MegaPointes, together with strobes and 4-lites were rigged on the three overhead trusses and the stage deck. BMFL Spots on the front truss provided key light and specials while Spiiders were a solid and effective choice for full stage washes and

additional effects, and more BMFLs, MegaPointes and Spiiders on the mid and upstage trusses added to the layering of lights. On the floor, Spiiders were used for cross stage key light, shooting in from the downstage corners, with MegaPointes and BMFLs deployed along the back below the LED screen for classic beam looks and WOWfactor blast-throughs. All the lighting fixtures were programmed via a GrandMA2 full size with a GrandMA2 Light for backup and the console was operated by Rio Hall-Jones (ShockOne&Crooked Colours), Kale Tatam (Slumberjack) and Mason Farley (Tina Says), all regular LDs and operators for Showscreens. They were additionally also able to visualise their shows in the warehouse in the days before the show. “With all those Robes on the production rig we knew everyone would have plenty of choice for their creativity and imagination to fly,” commented Bryce, adding that everyone was totally thrilled to be working on a real live show again! Ryan added that as a company they “love” their Robe kit for its reliability and were very happy to see their MegaPointes – the most recent addition to the Showscreens fleet – working hard and looking great with their impressive output complementing the BMFLs. Lighting and video – comprising a single upstage 8 metre wide by 4.5 metre high screen made up of Yestech 4.8 mm Black LED, run by video tech Brad Hodgkiss – was loaded in the day before ... to the absolute delight of all the crew who relished the feel of their hands on flightcases and the kit once again.

The artists were also similarly excited to be performing live onstage and in front of an audience! Ryan, Bryce and their team – they have managed to retain all staff so far throughout the crisis – have also used the lockdown time constructively to update their Occupational Safety and Health policies, moving from a paper-based system to a mobile app that is used to initiate and record all the pre-start inspections, toolbox meetings and hazard reports in one place. UNLOCKED was the first proper opportunity to implement this new approach which involved a toolbox meeting conducted by safety officer Michael Monaco talking through parameters like social distancing and sanitising whilst working. The HBF Stadium’s own HSO sat in on the toolbox meeting and offered positive feedback. The company has also utilized the spare time during lockdown to thoroughly maintain and service all their kit – including refinements like polishing lenses that are done less frequently when the operation is full speed. The kit being in perfect condition for the show also made the load in and rigging periods run very efficiently. “We counted ourselves as very lucky,” states Ryan. “We received loads of well wishes from all over the industry, and it was generally a fantastic feeling and atmosphere!” Showscreens will often collaborate with eastern Australian based companies like MPH Australia (newly merged with Creative Productions as Creative Productions Australia) to service touring work and offer nationwide continuity to their diverse client base. They were all “absolutely ecstatic” and “nothing but smiling faces” declared Ryan. “While we have focussed on keeping a totally positive atmosphere throughout this period, being at this gig was a very special experience.”

ALEX COLUMN

SEPTEMBER 2020

44

Take a Deep Breath I think most of us are fighting the current economic and health situation since about six months now. Throughout this period, I have always maintained a positive outlook on the future, but at the same time I have taken proper steps to consolidate my finances and to cut spending and to manage the small financial cushion, that I had accumulated before. I would like to share my very personal view on all this here and also invite you to share yours with me and with us. I have found that talking about it, usually helps already quite a bit to overcome the obstacles. We have to acknowledge that the landscape will be changing dramatically and nothing will be exactly as it was until January or February 2020. This is not depending on whether we like it or not, or whether we make noise about it or not. Our work environment will change, end of story. The change in all this requires our own adjustment and I am seeing a lot of inspiring approaches all over the globe and this shows how resilient and capable of change we are as an industry. If in person meetings cannot happen, then the meetings will find other platforms. Those platforms still require Audio, Video and Lights. If concerts do not happen with audiences on site, then they will be streamed and streaming still requires Audio, Video and Lights. There will be some jobs that will fall prey to the changes and colleagues with those jobs need to find alternatives, since it is very unlikely that they might come back and definitely not full time. However there are and there will be plenty of opportunities, but they require all of us to do what we have been doing anyway throughout our careers: learning new stuff and working with new gear all the time. When speaking and staying in touch with friends and colleagues from our industry over the past months, I have seen and heard a lot of encouraging stories and I was generally very impressed with how cool and relaxed and smart this industry approached this challenge of a lifetime. Besides me being a very positive person by nature, I have taken great pleasure to see and hear all of those stories and I have learned quite a bit from hearing them too. This reminds me of some very true words, that I was told by an American friend and colleague in 1992, when he said: “Change is good”. Me being a rather typical German at that time, was almost offended, since I wanted things stable and reliable and change was mostly a threat to me. Some 28 years later I have embraced this slogan for myself and only because of the embrace of this, I am now here and writing this column for you to read and hopefully to enjoy.

ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY ASIA | www.e-techasia.com

After the series of System tuning Columns over the past few months I want this issue’s column to be a motivational and inspirational column, since I know and feel that we all need some encouragement these days. Music and Arts will not die and they are an imperative part of homosapiens life. Some of you might have studied Latin and remember the slogans of the Romans some 2500 years ago: “Panem et Circensis”, which translates into “Bread and Circus” which meant that people need Food and Entertainment to be happy. Luckily we have seen some change over the past 2500 years and luckily today no one needs to make a living from being a Gladiator anymore. So yes, change is good and it is also important for progress to happen. With this I would like to encourage you all, take a deep breath, have a cup of your favourite coffee or tea or juice or beer and think about where you want to go and be in five years and then start pursuing this goal. Step by Step and small progress by progress you can get there and don’t forget to enjoy the journey along the way as it is all the joy in getting there eventually.
