This year’s ISE show in Amsterdam saw a larger turnout of visitors from Asia compared to the previous year. One of the reasons is that the exhibition was held after the Chinese New Year celebrations that enabled many of the Chinese descent professionals to visit the exhibition. Next year the event will be held before Chinese New Year and I am very certain we will see a larger crowd from Asia. I bring this up because I bumped into a number of visitors from Southeast Asia who generally do not visit ISE as their work revolves more around the Prolight + Sound industry, which would be their main show to visit. Almost all of them commented that they feel that ISE would be the show to visit instead of PL+S in Frankfurt. This should be of concern to PL+S. However I do not think there will be an immediate impact. One reason is that there are not many lighting and truss companies in ISE and not all the audio players are represented in ISE. ISE is also fighting for space as it expands. The other factor is simply that the time period when ISE is held. I do however feel that PL+S will start seeing fluctuating visitorship at least from Asia, depending when ISE is held. To be fair to Messe Frankfurt, they have been tweaking the show to ensure that it provides value to its visitors and it will be a continuous task to make the show stand out from its competitor. One thing that is going for it for sure is the timing of the exhibition which offers far more pleasant weather than that of ISE. With convergence of technologies, the lines are blurring and that is the essence of the success of ISE. Visitors get the opportunity to see the whole eco system working in unison regardless of whether you are in the event market or installation segment. We will catch up with you at PL+S Frankfurt and maybe we will get a better feel of where the exhibition is heading. Enjoy the read. F Bar & Lounge Rages With OHM

INDIA: One of the most fashionable and exclusive outing addresses in New Delhi, the F Bar & Lounge has apparently become a rage amongst the young adults and national capital’s fancied creme de la crème, so to say. Located in the posh and centrally connected Connaught Place, the fine-dining and partying destination is clearly the most favoured of the lot in the region. Taking the partying destination’s ‘above-the-rest’ identity to a new high of experience is the pristine and ‘made-inEngland’ sound from OHM. Powered with OHM’s VELA, BRW and TRS subwoofers, the F Bar & Lounge’s distinct aural ambience converts the otherwise sheer lounge to raging discotheque across a few doors, keeping the iconic tone of OHM’s voice that has mastered the art over 40 years of R&D. www.ohm.co.uk

The Production People Take Delivery Of Alcons Audio Systems

Sheldon Gooi with Eugene Tay

SINGAPORE: This purchase got the industry abuzz in Singapore, to the point that an open house to listen to the system was organised by both The Production People (TPP) and the Alcons distributor in Singapore, Creator’s Solutions Pte Ltd. TPP had taken delivery of six units of Alcons 12” point source speakers VR12, four units of 8” point source speakers VR8, 4 units of Subs BF181 and 3 units of Alcons Amplifiers with DSP, Sentinel 10. “I have known about the Alcons brand since the company started in 2002, but fell in love with Alcons when I heard them in Frankfurt at a demo event 2 years ago. Eugene Tay, the distributor invited me, along with another respected professional in the audio industry, whose views I value highly. What I heard blew me away, and it was then that I started the planning to own an Alcons system one day,” commented Sheldon Gooi, Managing Director, TPP. He continues, “We have started with a small system as we already have a significant inventory of another class-leading brand of loudspeakers. I would say Alcons Audio has a wide range of products that can cater to almost all sorts of events. With this system, I am looking at elevating the standards of sound reinforcement with what I believe to

be one of the best sounding speakers in the professional world, starting with the smaller events, conferences, ballroom shows, and hopefully we can build on this system, as the market demand evolves.” When enquired what about the system that he likes, Sheldon highlights that Alcons’ unique characteristic is that they employ a technology called “Pro Ribbon” for the HF instead of compression drivers. This allows a very linear HF, and very little distortion. “Meeting the management of Alcons has also showed me the “spirit” of Alcons, and that is the relentless pursuit of excellence in audio. The lengths they go to, to advance the perfection of the systems that they produce has impressed me.” TPP can’t wait to use the system in events and see the reaction of their clients. The Alcons Audio systems were purchased through their distributor Creator’s Solutions. www.tpp.com.sg www.creatorssolutions.com

Adamson Amplifies Focus On Training & Education With New Certifications WORLD: Committed to its partners and users performing at the highest possible level, Adamson Systems Engineering is introducing a comprehensive and standardized Educational Program for 2017 and beyond. The tiered program offers a hybrid of general live sound principles and product-specific training to members of Adamson’s global network and the public, from novice technicians to the world’s top integrators and engineers. “While Adamson has long held training programs at a variety of skill levels, we are now globally standardizing our Education Program to ensure our users can deliver the same level of quality worldwide,” comments Jeremiah Karni, Head of Education at Adamson. “Sharing our extensive experience in designing and deploying loudspeaker systems with our users is very rewarding, and we value their feedback for the continuous improvement of our product range.” The Adamson Education Program begins online with pre-training material consisting of video tutorials and user handbooks designed to put participants on equal footing before diving into in-person training. The in-person component kicks off with Applied Certification, a two-day course designed to instill the framework needed to properly design, deploy, and control an Adamson loudspeaker system, utilizing Blueprint AV simulation software and Lake Controller. A handful of Adamson’s global partners have already taken advantage of the Applied Certification program and their feedback on the content and resources provided has been overwhelmingly encouraging. The first public Applied Certification sessions in Asia will be held in Seoul, South Korea on 2 and 3 March followed by a series of public sessions in Europe, Asia, and the U.S. While users take advantage of the first tier, Adamson is developing the standardized Advanced Certification and Adamson Certified Engineer programs, set to premiere at the end of 2017.

Expanding on the knowledge base covered in Applied Certification, the three-day Advanced Certification course will explore more in-depth aspects of design and control for touring engineers and integrators. All Advanced Certification alumni are encouraged to apply to the Adamson Certified System Engineer program. An ACSE will receive a certificate of achievement, making them valuable assets to current and potential employers using Adamson loudspeaker systems. “Education and training is a key component of the Adamson integrated system offering,” adds Marc Weber, Director of Product and Brand Management. “Hands-on training and other educational initiatives like tutorial videos elevate the performance of Adamson products by optimizing their application in the field. This improved performance is not only rewarding for the end users; it also increases the demand for Adamson products, maximizes inventory utilization at rental companies, and enhances the lifetime return on investment for all of our partners.” For more information on the new education program, visit the brand new Adamson website. ADJ's Penta Pix Offers Pixel Mappable Effect For New Lightshow Looks at any angle, or fold out to form a floor stand to allow the effect to sit at the back of a stage pointing upwards. The unit is also fitted with a safety hook for attaching a safety cable to provide added security when the effect is positioned above performers or the crowd at an event.

ADJ has introduced the Penta Pix, its latest lighting fixture designed for clubs, venues, touring productions and one-off events. The Penta Pix features five potent LED-powered ACL beams arranged in a fan formation. With red, green, blue and white colour mixing as well as individual pixel control, the fixture offers a huge amount of potential for creative lighting design. The Penta Pix features five 15W 4-IN-1 RGBW LEDs which are mounted behind ACLs (Advanced Collimator Lenses) to create razor-sharp 6-degree beams. The inclusion of white within the LED source means that the fixture can create the classic ACL ‘white fingers of light’ look, while its RGB components mean that this effect can be taken to the next level by introducing rainbow colours and chasing patterns. The Penta Pix has a slim central unit with the five lens assemblies attached to the front in a fixed fan pattern. This makes for easy setup since the lenses are positioned in an equally-spaced arc, and each individual lens can be angled on its X-axis to add versatility to the Penta Pix effect. The Penta Pix is fitted with a flexible scissor yoke that can be used to hang the fixture from a truss or lighting stand

Measuring 21” x 11” x 10.25” / 530 x 280 x 260mm (LxWxH) and weighing 12 lbs. / 5.4 kg, the fixture is easy to carry, rig, store and transport. It is also housed in a metal case, and can be used for as long as needed due to its LED light-sources that keep it running cool. The LEDS also have a maximum power draw of just 77W, making it ideal for use in situations where power supply is limited. The fixture is also fitted with a 4-button LCD function display, which makes mode selection and addressing easy, as well as 3-pin XLR Input and Output sockets for connecting a control signal. NEXO Unveils GEO M10 Line Array System For Theatre, Conference And Live Music Applications NEXO has unveiled the new GEO M10 line array, a highoutput sound reinforcement system for long-throw theatre and live music applications. Twice as powerful as its sister GEO M6 compact line array, the mid-size line array draws on structural and acoustic innovations first released in NEXO's STM Series modular line array. The M10 takes its name from its 10” neodymium LF driver, paired with a 1.4” HF titanium diaphragm HF driver in an injection-moulded reticulate urethane co-polymer enclosure. With a footprint of 531(W) x 288(H) x 355(D) mm, the 2-way passive module delivers a frequency response of 59Hz-20kHz with nominal peak SPL of 131dB. There are two versions of the M10 cabinet, offering 12.5° and 25° of vertical dispersion. Both have 80°/120° horizontal dispersion which can be configured manually, without tools, by removing the magnetic grille and adjusting NEXO’s flange fixing system. The single 10" design is aimed to present advantages over the more common double-6" design, by providing a lower frequency response from a two-way cabinet. The box is also designed to keep a narrow profile and provide tighter inter-cabinet angles with its height. The single-driver design also allows for better vertical control, and NEXO’s proprietary Directivity/Phase Device (DPD) extends upper line source coupling frequency limits between the adjacent 10” drivers, so the adjacent loudspeakers couple as coherently as if there were twice as many 6” drivers, mounted at half the physical distance. Weighing 21kg, the M10's compact dimensions also mean minimal visual impact and improved sightlines. The GEO M10 is partnered by a dedicated subbass cabinet, the MSub15. Weighing 36kg, the new sub has side handles, large composite bumpers on each corner, and is presented in a robust touring package with steel grille, or in an elegant installation version with cloth grille. It flies with the M10 in an aesthetically pleasing and low profile array, operable in omni or cardioid mode, thanks to front and back connection plates. The MSub15s are the

same width as the M10 cabinets, but taller - two subs are equivalent in height to three M10s. M10 can be flown or ground-stacked with or without the MSub15. Up to 12x M10 or 8x MSub15 modules can be combined in a single flown column, or, for instance, 3x MSub15s can be arrayed above 9x M10 cabinets, using one of two dedicated bumper accessories. Alternatively, the M10 elements can be ground-stacked on top of the MSub15s, with between -12° to +12° of tilt. The internal 3-point rigging system for the GEO M10 now features automatic locking and no loose parts. Two different bumper options are available, both with optional expansion bar, as well as an extension accessory for ground-stacking. Cost-effective amplification may be done via NEXO’s NXAMP4x4 TDcontroller; with up to four M10 cabinets per channel, and up to three subs per channel, the system can be controlled over a network using a Dante, Ethersound or AES/EBU digital expansion card. The M10 has full TUV certification, and is available in black and white, touring and installation cabinet versions as standard. It can also be ordered in the full range of RAL colour options, and is expected to start shipping at the start of February. www.nexo-sa.com

Scratchley’s On The Wharf Expands With New Eyecatching Space

Your Vision | Sound Solutions installs an integrated system from Harman, supplied by Jands to complement the look

N

ewcastle’s iconic waterfront restaurant Scratchley’s On The Wharf has boldly expanded, adding the new bar and function space ‘Battlesticks at Scratchley’s’ to its western end. The new eye-catching, architect-designed space opens energetically to the water, stretching its white ‘wings’ that function as blinds to break-up the energy of the afternoon sun reflecting off the harbour. This has led some locals to dub the structure ‘Newcastle’s Opera House’. With the new build came the opportunity to update and expand the venue’s sound and vision capabilities, with local provider Your Vision | Sound Solutions installing an integrated system from Harman, supplied by Jands. The new space not only includes the eponymous bar, but also new function rooms and kitchens. With total flexibility, the entire complex can be turned into a restaurant or bar, and the function rooms can be utilised stand-alone or summed together. Even the kitchens get their own independent AV zone. With Scratchley’s running entertainment and functions seven days a week, the new audio system had to be able to handle live performances,

background music, meetings, and paging, all without an operator present. Brett Coxon and Your Vision chose a solution that integrates JBL loudspeakers, BSS processing, and Crown amplification. “The new development has doubled Scratchley’s footprint,” explained Brett. “Battlesticks has raked ceilings on a 15 degree angle, with walls at 45 degrees to the architectural ‘wings’ that extend outside. There’s geometrically patterned acoustic tiles, and a strong aesthetic. I chose JBL Control 65P/T pendant speakers to fit in with the décor, and they really suit the room. The architect loved the idea and actually complemented the finished result! The space has a clean palette, with lots of white. We used white pendants and a silver-tinged figure-eight, double insulated cable to run down to the speakers. They’re all running on 100v line, tapped at 60W.” The brief Brett was given for the Battlesticks PA was that performers and entertainers should not need to bring in any equipment. “To achieve that, I set up four input

PROJECTS

ETA March 2017

“The BSS Blu-101 and DCi8|300 combine the function rooms when the partitions are opened,” said Brett. “There’s a local input in each zone, with iPad control, and a master PC in the main rack. Each zone has source selection and volume control, which can be isolated to local or combine from the other rooms, with each also having the ability to bring in the feed from the bar or restaurant. If it’s busy, every space can combine to become part of the restaurant or bar. Even the kitchens have their own independent speakers, inputs and volume controls, which means we can automatically schedule them to clone the main areas at a lower volume during service.” channels on the BSS-Blu 101 DSP that are patched via two XLRs, labelled mic one and two, and two combo jack/ XLR connectors for instruments,” Brett expanded. “All the performers need to do is plug in their microphones, guitars, or keys. They’re then handed an iPad running Harman’s HiQnet software with a simple mixer interface. They have an output to stage for monitoring via a JBL EON610 as foldback.” Five JBL Control 65P/T full range pendant speakers augmented by two JBL Control 60PS/T pendant subwoofers ably cover the bar’s patrons. “The pendants cover a circular area of about 5 metres in diameter each at ear-height,” Brett continued. “We positioned the subs in the middle of the room, and we’ve got excellent coverage. The clarity is surprising. The space has a nice natural reverb, and it sounds fantastic. It’s had so much positive feedback. I took in my own guitar during set-up and was blown away that we could achieve that kind of sound with just pendant speakers.” Your Vision updated the existing flat-roof sections of Scratchley’s with JBL Control 45C/T ceiling speakers, and added JBL Control 8128 and 8124 ceiling speakers to the bathrooms and kitchens. A cluster of JBL Control 25AV compact outdoor speakers run outside along the harbour esplanade, functioning as a paging system for Scratchley’s new take-away window as well as creating atmosphere when approaching or leaving the venue. The multizone solution is designed around the use of the Crown DCI8|300N amplifier which supplies 300w per channel which is switchable in pairs between 100v line and low ohm operation to suit the speaker requirement in each area. Two JBL CSA 280 amplifiers handle the feeds to the kitchens and bathrooms. All audio is processed by the 12 in, eight out BSS-Blu 101 DSP.

Brett chose to install an integrated system from Harman for some sound practical reasons. “When you put together a system from multiple manufacturers, it’s never really complete,” mused Brett. “And if something’s not right, you never get the support you need. We use more or less the same system in all our venues, and have found that with one supplier, you support them and you get the support back. That’s what we’ve got with Jands – they’re the only supplier who can cover all the bases of what we do. They’ve been excellent with loan stock, demos and support. We currently have several jobs on the go, and Jands are assisting with each of them. Yes, the products are great, but it’s the support that’s really important to us.” www.jands.com.au

Yamaha DXS Subwoofers Add Impact To Club’s Electronic Music Subwoofer’s power and impact fits in seamlessly with the club music style

W

OMB, in the Shibuya district of Tokyo, Japan, is a prominent large-scale club that focuses on techno, drum & bass, and EDM, and frequently hosts guest artists from overseas. The sound system in the first-level WOMB LOUNGE was recently updated with Yamaha DSR powered loudspeakers and DXS18 powered subwoofers. WOMB opened in April, 2000, with a strong emphasis on sound quality. Steve Dash, a sound engineer renowned for achieving outstanding sound at large-scale clubs throughout the world, was brought in to do the main floor sound design. The sound system has continued to evolve over the past 16 years, introducing Tokyo clubgoers to cutting-edge electronic music culture.

In addition to the 200-square-meter main floor on the second level, WOMB offers the WOMB LOUNGE on the first level, a VIP LOUNGE on the fourth level, and a VVIP TERRACE on the third level for a total of four separate club areas. The entire speaker system in the WOMB LOUNGE, with its 70-square-meter dance floor, was recently upgraded to Yamaha DSR powered loudspeakers and DXS18 powered subwoofers. Hiromi Ohnishi, Sound Director at WOMB and an active DJ around the Tokyo metropolis, discusses the club’s decision to install Yamaha sound gear: “We were already using DSR112 and DSR115 full-range speakers in the MIDDLE LOUNGE on the third level, where the VVIP TERRACE is currently located. whole club in February last year, and we decided it would be a good time to update the first-level sound system as well. We knew that our customers and guest artists were attracted by the quality of our sound, reinforced by the use of subwoofers, so naturally that played a role in our decision. We were satisfied with the sound and safety of the DSR series, but at the time the renewal was being planned the DXS18 had not been released. We were trying to decide whether to purchase an entirely new system or use our existing full-range DSR speakers with different subwoofers, when we received news that a new subwoofer had been released, and an invitation to hear it in action. The timing was perfect, so we went to the listening event and were so impressed with the system’s power and impact with club music that we finalized our purchase decision on the spot.” “The new WOMB LOUNGE system consists of DSR115 fullrange units in each of the room’s four corners, and DXS18

subwoofers located on either side of the DJ booth. We haven’t even driven the system at full power yet, and it has plenty of power for the space. It is an excellent match for the room. We are totally satisfied with the midrange clarity of the DSR units, and the low-end support provided by the DXS subwoofers.” www.yamahaproaudio.com

Community Flies High For Mega Adventure Aerial Park in Adelaide

Key requirement was to have sound coverage for the 25m high open structure with maximum control of overspill

H

order Communication Solutions has recently completed the installation of a Community loudspeaker system for the Mega Adventure Aerial Park in Adelaide, South Australia. With operations in Singapore and Australia, Mega Adventure was founded by explorer and adventurer Alex Blyth, with the aim of becoming a global leader in bringing adventure experiences to urban communities. The Mega Adventure Aerial Park in Adelaide is the first of its kind in the world and was designed and built by Mega Adventure’s sister company, Touch Cloud Global. Following the successful provision of sound systems for its other adventure parks, Mega Adventure again commissioned the services of John Horder of Horder Communication Solutions to provide a high quality, costeffective sound solution for the aerial adventure park.

Requiring a system to cover the 25m high open structure with maximum control of overspill, Horder approached Hills Audio Visual to assist with a design using Community R SERIES loudspeakers. The brief specified that the system must provide very high quality music and speech uniformly throughout all levels of the structure, with no spill to the north and south where a residential holiday park and a leisure resort are situated, and limited spill towards the golf course to the east. Only the western border had no restrictions as this faced sand hills and the ocean. Blake Kirby of Hills Audio Visual explained the system design, “We decided to use Community R SERIES R.353896 loudspeakers for a number of reasons. They offered superb frequency response and SPL specifications, with a well-controlled dispersion pattern. Additionally their allweather capability was suited to the marine environment and their physical footprint suited flying from the structure

PROJECTS

41

ETA March 2017

“The control of the spill exceeded expectations and the sound throughout the structure is uniform, meeting the specified high quality. Very limited EQ was required, with just a small lift at 300Hz and 10K for subjective preference. SPL from the top level is so uniform as to be indiscernible by participants,” concludes Mr Kirby.

- they looked great and the colour was perfect. Their excellent value for money and being able to achieve perfect coverage from a small number of loudspeakers combined to meet the budget.” Mr Kirby continued, “We chose to fly two loudspeakers pointing down and to the west where dispersion was not an issue and one speaker down and to the east to fill the pattern, but still reduce spill to the east. Each was driven by separate 200W Class D amplifiers as a single zone. The result in controlled coverage and sound quality was simply awesome!”

Mega Adventure Adelaide GM, Stephen Grundy, commented, “Now my structure has all the senses covered. It really makes it feel inclusive, especially when there are not a lot of people on the structure.” Mr Grundy was also very pleased with the progression from the existing speakers on the harnessing deck while walking towards the structure. “It’s seamless,” he reported. www.communitypro.com www.hills.com.au www.hordercomms.com.au www.megaadventure.com.au

Sheikh Zayed Heritage Festival ABU DHBAI

Protec provides state-of-the-art sound and light for the 30,000 sqm site

P

rotec has successfully pulled off one of its most demanding production support challenges ever, at the annual Sheikh Zayed Heritage Festival in Abu Dhabi.

The event, which was held at the Al Wathba race track, celebrates UAE’s cultural inheritance as well as the diversity of other cultures around the world. The festival offered a variety of educational platforms, interactive performances, fountain shows, a tribal parade and a dazzling fireworks display each night. Protec were engaged for the fourth consecutive year to provide state-of-the-art sound and lighting reinforcement for the 30,000 sqm site. Not only was the scale unprecedented, but such has been the event’s success, that a late decision was taken to

extend the duration of the event to two months, from early December to January 21st. Protec provided site wide inventory, deploying an elaborate Optocore dual redundant fibre network to transmit pristine audio to all the locations. Requiring some 2.6km of cable, this was all managed from a central control hub. The deployment enabled them to carry out a range of tasks, from servicing 40 live interactive shows daily in dedicated traditional souks and time-coded fountain and firework displays, to providing an emergency announcement system and programmed call to prayer across the entire festival site. Immersed in their own unique cuisine and culture (including traditional dress), each of the souks presented four shows a day, making over 2,000 live performances

over the 52-day duration of the festival alone. And with additional sound coverage required for the kids area, horses and Union Circle, Protec’s audio department had no fewer than 14 separate sites to manage over the vast festival grounds. In addition, the company dipped further into its large inventory to provide a separate sound system for an independent one-day event, Union March, in which tribes from across the Emirates marched to signify unity as part of the National Day celebrations. To oversee the deployment and operation of the massive technical infrastructure Protec fielded an experienced crew under the project management of Simon Travis. Daniel Dignan and John Francis took charge of the audio for the Heritage Festival with Tim Allison looking after the Union March, while lighting was in the capable hands of Geronimo Abad, Nelson Noche and Ferdie Caloy. Speaking of the challenges faced by his team, Simon Travis stated that in order to convert the site plan provided by the Ministry of Presidential Affairs into reality heavy investment

in equipment had been required, notably the acquisition of 76 Electro-Voice SX300 loudspeakers.

Main Entrance In addition to the audio, Protec specified a number of industry standard lighting fixtures from its cutting edge fleet. This included 24 Clay Paky Prima Super Sharpys, which were placed on the lighting towers to produce aerial effects, while no fewer than 100 Studio Due CityColor fixtures washed the outside walls. Once inside, the lighting magic further reverberated around the personalised souks.

Union Circle The Union Circle was the main hub of the event where the firework display and fountain show — which had been added for the first time — took place. Many people used this area to set up blankets and picnics on the grass surrounding the water. Ten towers were set up around the grass area in the Union Circle, each supporting 12 Cans facing out towards the festival, along with four Molefays, (two each side of the tower to provide a wash) and six Clay Paky fixtures (three Sharpys and three K20’s) facing into the centre circle of the fountain to add both beam and general colour effects, and highlight the UAE flag. All lighting was controlled from an Avolites platform. In a perfectly choreographed feature, the audio was triggered by timecode. Coverage for the Union Circle was via 32 x JBL VerTec 4889 line array elements, powered by Camco Vortex 6 amplifiers — again fed from the Optocore X6R network converters. A Soundcraft Si Compact digital mixing desk took inputs from a wireless Shure Beta 87 and a single channel from a Pioneer DJM900 Nexus mixer

performances four times a day to show case traditional dancing and singing.

All channels, including two further firework inputs, were taken individually back to the DiGiCo SD9 for local playout in the centre circle area.

Lighting in the souks was largely derived from Par Cans, boosted by 4-light Molefays, which gave a wider colour wash to the surrounding pathways.

Protec were also tasked with lighting the rear pathways and areas around the mosques with LED floods and LED pars, while Pixelline 1044 LED battens and Molefays were used in the kids area.

“Our task was to ensure that each of the souks’ performance stages was lit perfectly,” emphasized Simon Travis. “There were more parcans than I have ever used split between the main Union Circle main site and various souks. We used 144 par cans in one souk alone and 126 in another.”

In this massive deployment of industry standard spots, profiles and washes, including 1000 conventional Pars, all fixtures had been detailed mission critical tasks. How did they stand up to the conditions? Since the location was a race track the terrain was fairly uneven. “With more than 75 truss lighting towers it was necessary to ship in prefabricated concrete blocks,” explained Protec’s project manager. ”We made steel plates so we could mount the truss on top. As a result, everything was rock solid.”

Heritage Souks The biggest challenge had been equipping 10 of the 11 souks with concert grade lighting and sound. Each souk represented a specific country and their purpose was to showcase their heritage and culture by selling traditional clothes and authentic food as well putting on

For these centre stages, Protec supplied 10 small Mackie ProFX12 desks as well as a number of mics stands, DI boxes and aux cables.

Outputs to the Optocore X6R's would automatically cut the QLab play back via a ducking gate on the SD9, and return to the pre-existing state at the end of the set.

Union March Union March was a one-off event attended by a host of dignitaries including the leaders of each of the Emirates and the King of Saudi Arabia and was broadcast on several channels throughout the Middle East.

Six small SX300’s were attached to the truss towers and Protec maintained master control so they could monitor the levels and insert the pre-programmed prayer times and emergency announcements. All limiting and compression took place within the SD9 to ensure no sound bleed between souks. In addition to the stages, Protec also lit the surrounding grass area. It had been Daniel Dignan’s task to maintain audio consistency across the 14 or so zones, including the general site-wide announcements, with all signals running back to the master control room via the elaborate fibre network. To accomplish this Protec deployed 76 of their new EV SX300's, powered by L-Acoustics LA48 amplifiers, distributed around the souks and various event areas, and mounted on Total Fabrications XO lighting towers. “In total we took 29 lines from the site out of the LX4B and into an DiGiCo SD Rack and a Digico SD9, and sent 15 lines back out to the individual systems around the site,” explained Dignan. Other inputs into the SD9 came from QLab cue-based software, connected to the internet — which triggered the announcements. A further 16 outputs were supplied over the Dante platform by two Four Audio DBO1 Dante breakout boxes (for the souks), and allowed an extra channel to deliver important site wide announcements (and prayer), cutting all other inputs by 15dB as it did so. The fibre network comprised five Optocore X6R-FX interfaces, linked to the master control room where the signals ran into an Optocore LX4B FOH unit.

Tim Allison took charge of the PA and playback, as well as the microphones for the main grandstand. With a large parade ground to be covered, his PA included 40 x L-Acoustics K2 elements, with LA racks, again running over an Optocore fibre network and DiGiCo SD21 digital desk with D-Rack. Eight towers consisting of four L-Acoustics K2 were used to cover the grandstand, while a VIP area in the middle was served by a pair of K2, carefully positioned to preserve sightlines. In terms of sources, shotgun and lectern mics were chosen to pick up the speeches and tribal chanting. “We had Shure VP89L mics behind the stacks of K2 to ensure what the tribes were actually singing was audible,” said Allison. “We also had some Schoeps Mk4 lectern mics down there for any speeches.” Expressing his satisfaction with the show, Tim Allison stated, “I have done many types of similar show — the difference with this show, as in the case with any show that involves animals, is that it makes it more challenging for the show cues.” Summing up the event as a whole, Simon Travis paid tribute to his team — and the sophisticated design they had managed to execute. “This gave us full control over

Robe Celebrates Singapore Chingay Spectacle

Lighting Designer Javier Tan’s high-impact lighting design matched the glamour, glitz and exuberance of the high profile public event

O

ver 400 Robe moving lights boosted the magic and spectacle of the 45th Singapore Chingay Parade to celebrate Chinese New Year – The Year of the Rooster.

The ColorStrobes were used as powerful and effective wash lights to cover the extensive show and audience areas in addition to their stunning range of strobe effects, which added lots of sparkle throughout.

Javier Tan’s colourful high-impact lighting design matched the glamour, glitz and exuberance of the high profile public event, featuring an ebullient cast of 8000, creatively directed by Fan Dong Kai and staged at the F1 Pit Building in the city centre.

Additional wash lighting was provided by 56 x Robe LEDWash 600s, with all the event’s lighting and audio kit supplied by top Singapore rental company, CSP Productions Pte Ltd.

The glittering show was organized by the People’s Association (PA). It celebrated the diversity and multicultural nature of the nation’s population and was watched live by President, Dr. Tony Tan, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, plus assorted political, dignitaries and VIPs together with approximately 200,000 excited members of the public over two nights. It was also recorded for broadcast. Javier is one of the region’s top lighting designers and a big Robe advocate. He has lit Chingay before on the same site in 2013, so he knew in the early planning stages that the most powerful lightsources available were needed … so he chose Robe’s BMFLs. To help wash the parade route and the six massive grandstands which accommodated 30,000 spectators, he specified 216 x BMFL Blades, 56 x BMFL WashBeams and 112 x Robe ColorStrobes.

The main challenge, Javier reveals … was simply illuminating the vast 360 metre long parade area created in the F1 pit lane and ensuring that the lumen levels were ramped up as high as the audience anticipation! A strong sense of theatricality and drama was also paramount as the many different contingents - including teams representing other countries like Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, China and South Korea shimmied down the parade ground. The three-hour-long visual extravaganza featured a dazzling array of bling-tastic costumes, 12 elaborately decorated and illuminated floats and five giant puppets.

The ColorStrobes were positioned on the upper gantry rail, all the way along, where they could easily immerse the entire crowd and performance area with colours and effects. “These strobes are simply amazing,” stated Javier who first saw them in action during the 2016 F1 concert, and was immediately struck with their retina-burning intensity!

The lights were rigged on a series of gantries and towers erected along the backs of the seating grandstands on both sides, arranged in layers to add depth to the picture and emphasise the dimension and scale of the space. The BMFL Blades were on the middle levels with the WashBeams on the tops of the towers, easily dealing with the 65 metre throw distance. “I needed power and the brightness and it was absolutely the best choice,” confirmed Javier. He added that BMFLs are readily available on the rental market in Singapore Thanks to the hard work of Robe’s Asia Pacific subsidiary, all the major rental companies have some stock and continuity of fixtures is another good reason for spec’ing BMFLs on large shows. The BMFL Blades created some stunning aerial and beam effects. They textured the floor, a raised runway along one side and a waterway running the full 360 metres down the other, helping the lively, animated environment further zing with energy!

On Javier’s recommendation, CSP Productions purchased another 80 ColorStrobes which joined the 40 already in their inventory, especially for this project, “They are absolute saviours on a site like this with such huge areas to light. The colours are great; they can do all the effects and funky bits and save having literally hundreds of conventionals to do the same job”. The first time he had used BMFLS was the 50th National Day Parade (NDP) in 2015 ... when he was also suitably impressed enough to start specifying them regularly in his work. Javier mentions that if he could have had more BMFLs and ColorStrobes, he would have … but while there is a good lighting budget for this show, there's also a need for some expedience!! Four lighting consoles were used to run the show lighting, which also included some other moving and LED lights plus 40 fog machines. He worked with his regular very stylish team of programmers Clement Cheong and Joyce Goh who kept everything cool, calm and efficient at FOH. The Chingay 45 load-in took place in early December. This is a bit of a luxury compared to some of the timescales in the crazy world of live events, BUT when you see

the vibrancy and intensity of the show, understand its profile for the country and appreciate the time needed to choreograph 8000 volunteers into a slick and fluid show ... you can understand why! Javier enjoyed a mega busy year in 2016 which included designing lights for Chinese pop singing superstar and actress Karen Mok's world tour, and being lead lighting programmer for Mac Chan on the 2016 NDP. Chingay 2017 Singapore’s technical director was Yong Fa. CSP's lighting crew chief on site was Colin Foo and their technical managers Alan Lee and Pete Win Tin ensured that everything ran smoothly from the warehouse end. "It was great working with CSP Productions and Robe," says Javier wrapping up the interview and adding, with a big smile, that if he lights the event again, he would intend to double the amount of Robe ColorStrobes!

DPA Microphones Heads To Nepal For Groundbreaking Opera

d:screet 4061 Necklace microphone delivers natural, transparent sound reproduction with virtually no feedback for Sound Engineer Lucy Peckham

W

hen Lucy Peckham, co-partner of Anchoragebased Both Ears Live Sound, was contacted by Greg Mitchell, a design professor at UC Santa Barbara, she knew she would be a part of something special. Mitchell was looking for a sound engineer to go to Nepal to work on the first opera ever performed in that country. Peckham recognized early that she would also need equipment capable of performing under Kathmandu’s less than forgiving environment. Peckham found the solution she needed in DPA Microphone’ d:screet™ 4061 Necklace Microphone. Peckham first heard of DPA after attending a Live Design conference in Las Vegas. “I started receiving Live Design’s online newsletter and DPA kept popping up in the articles I found most interesting,” she says. “One article in particular caught my attention: DPA microphones were used to mic the entire cast and orchestra of a San Francisco Opera performance for the purpose of recording it. The idea of using wireless to capture a live performance astonished me. I did not think there was a mic out there that could handle

the kind of dynamic range that opera singers produce, while also capturing the qualitative nuance of character and expression that the singers must achieve. After that, I wanted to know more about DPA.” Last spring, after attending a presentation by DPA representatives at the USITT conference, Peckham was convinced DPA was the microphone she needed for the challenging Nepal opera project she was about to undertake. “At the conference, I decided I wanted to use three d:screet 4061 Necklace microphones for the singers and a d:screet IMK-SC4061 Instrument Microphone Kit with a d:screet 4061 Omnidirectional Microphone for the saxophone,” adds Peckham. The opera, Arjuna’s Dilemma, by American Composer Douglas J. Cuomo, is based on a story from the Hindu holy text, the Bhagavad Gita. It was to be staged outdoors in the world heritage site Patan Durbar Square near the end of the rainy season.

composer’s and director’s permission, that single night I raised the overall volume of the show significantly to drown out the distraction of the street festival. Arjuna’s Dilemma became a rock opera that night! There was no feedback at all and though the opera singers were amused, no one’s performance suffered either. The quality of their vocal amplification was completely unchanged and they were still comfortable with the sound.” In addition to the d:screet 4061s unrivaled sound quality, Peckham also likes the microphones’ rugged build and compact form factor. “The comfort of the d:screet 4061s necklace-style is excellent for performers who aren’t used to being miked,” adds Peckham. “In no time, they forget they are wearing them. In addition, they were also perfect for the hot, humid environment where we were performing. The d:screet 4061 Necklace Microphone has no issues with sweat to my knowledge. The opera sounded amazing and it was wonderful to be part of such a ground-breaking production.” www.dpamicrophones.com

Because of the outdoor venue, an extremely small orchestra (with only nine musicians) and the varied vocal strengths of the company, all the singers and the orchestra needed to be miked, amplified and mixed. Peckham chose DPA microphones for the opera singers, Roy Stevens and Annalisa Winberg, the Hindu Temple singer Gurudev Kamat and the jazz saxophonist Inap Shrestha. “I used d:screet 4061s for this project because of the quality of the sound they reproduce,” says Peckham. “Though the whole opera was amplified and mixed, it had to sound as if it wasn’t. It had to sound naturally acoustic, as opera should, and thanks to DPA, it did. The accuracy and transparency of sound reproduction without distortion, and the significant feedback rejections, are absolutely amazing.” On one particular night, Peckham was thrown a curve ball when a large street festival was set up on the other side of the wall of the outdoor venue. “As part of the festival, there were multiple drummers, instruments and several amplified vocalists,” adds Peckham. “With the conductor’s,

J Event Management is no stranger in the audio visual industry and lived up to its name once again by providing their services to one of Malaysia’s greatest music award events, Anugerah Juara Lagu 31 (AJL). With a great success in the previous year’s AJL event, MJ Event Management were more than delighted to contribute their services in this year’s AJL event. The event happened on 22nd January 2017, at Dewan Merdeka Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC). Performances from various artist such as Dayang Nurfaizah, Elizabeth Tan, Black, Misha Omar, Khalifah and many more made AJL 31 a prestigious music award event that fans enthusiastically attend to.

“Compared to the previous venue which was larger, we decided to bring in a different set of equipment not only to match the venue’s acoustic factor but to test out different setups we could do,” highlights Manja. “Compared to the previous year, there were less challenges in this venue as we did not need to worry about the weather since there were no outdoor installations. As always we managed to deliver our services on time, following our timeline and plan,” commented Manja on the challenges he faced for this event. Overall more than 80 speakers were used throughout the venue inclusive of the monitor speakers. Among these speakers, there were 24 units of d&b J Series, 6 units of d&b V Series and 16 units of d&b Subs installed for the stage. “In the previous AJL event, we mainly used RCF line array speakers. For this year’s AJL, we wanted to try a new setup, therefore we did some mix and match with d&b and RCF speakers,” commented Manja. A total of 12 units of RCF TT55A and RCF TT33A were also used for the event. Solid State Logic made its reappearance again for this year’s AJL Event. The SSL 500 Live Console was given the task as the recording sound console for television. “We all know that the Solid State Logic digital console is one of the best digital mixing sound console. In fact our Sound Engineer Greg, mentioned that the SSL board was simply amazing and a great sound console when he was given the opportunity to operate it,” said Manja. “Back in 2016, we used the SSL 500 and SSL 300 for Front of House and Monitor console. The end result was spectacular and the sound was amazing. This year we wanted to make a difference therefore we decided to use the SSL 500 as the recording console for television,” continued Manja.

“As for microphones, we used various vocal and instrument microphones. One of the main vocal microphones we used were the Sennheiser SKM 2000 Series. Sennheiser microphones can capture sound perfectly. It is always one of our favourites,” commented Manja. It was thanks to Dayang Nurfaizah’s amazing vocal that managed to show the public the full potential of the Sennheiser SKM 2000 Series. That night she won both the music award and the Best Vocal award. The Sennheiser SKM 5000 Series was also given the opportunity to display its capability when Elizabeth Tan performed gracefully with it.

Greg Henderson behind SSL 500 Live Sound Console in AJL31 The SSL 500 Live Console was placed in an area above and away from the stage, limiting the amount of noise pollution from the hall. It was there that we were given the opportunity to interview Greg Henderson. Greg Henderson, Broadcast and Sound Engineer was the person behind the SSL 500 Live Console throughout the event. With influence from his uncle, Greg started his career in the audio visual industry career way back in the 80s in Australia as an assistant engineer for a studio. It was then in the 90s he began his career in Malaysia working as a sound engineer in a studio environment. “It was Ramli M.S. that brought me to live and broadcast engineering,” mentions Greg. “I started venturing into live and broadcast when Ramli asked me to join him for one of his programs, Academi Fantasia. The ball started rolling as I started to do more in the broadcast segment,” continues Greg as he configures the SSL 500 Live console. “It was rather scary at first doing something in an environment that I was not familiar with.

“Challenges I had was definitely handling the SSL 500 Live Console. It was my first time using the Solid State Logic sound console. I heard about it and I wanted to give it a go. Few days before the setup, I was given dedicated training from an Acoustic & Lighting System sound engineer. I am thankful to them as I was able to familiarize myself with the sound console quicker with their help,” commented Greg. “One of the features I like about the SSL is the Stem group or Stem system. It reminds me of analog groups which I have been using. You got EQ dynamics plus it is very sensitive to effect just like a normal channel, that’s very cool. It is very flexible and also easy to use once you are familiarized with the console. The reverbs on this console is really amazing. Most of all, I like the sound of it. It is a really good sound console. I noticed a big difference with the previous sound console that I was using. I do

With the amazing setup and timely coordination AJL 31 was a huge success once again, bringing a large crowd to witness their stars perform. “It was great event, watching it being successful is all I ever wanted. As for New Year resolutions or goals, I am looking to further increase my equipment inventory for various audio visual brands. I am not looking to be a champion, but to share and help out in the audio visual industry. I have great ideas and plan to extend my business not only locally but internationally,” commented Manja. “I am also very pleased and thankful to Acoustic & Lighting System, Mr. Yeo and Mahes for always being supportive and being there to help out in the industry,” continued Manja.

Robe For Ras Al Khaimah National Day Celebrations

Award-winning lighting and show designer Terry Miranda of Lighthouse Productions lights a special production of musical “Fakhrak Ya Watan”

N

early 200 Robe fixtures were used by awardwinning lighting and show designer Terry Miranda of Lighthouse Productions to light a special production of musical “Fakhrak Ya Watan” (The Pride of a Nation) for the 2016 Ras al-Khaimah National Day Celebrations on the eve of the United Arab Emirates 2016 National Day event. Ras al-Khaimah (RAK) is one of the seven Emirates making up the UAE. The spectacular, performed by a cast of over 800 singers, dancers, actors and poets of all ages, was attended by His Highness Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Supreme Council member of the UAE & Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, plus a host of dignitaries and VVIPs as well as 10,000 members of the public. The show, which included eye-catching projections mapped across a 92 metre wide set and performance / presentation area, celebrated UAE’s achievements over the last 45 years and presented a vision of the future of the country based on peace and inclusion. It culminated in a high-impact 4 minute pyro and laser spectacular finale, leaving guests stunned with awe!

Lighthouse Productions actually designed and built the entire 1,250,000 square metre site from the ground up, creating the venue for the event - from the stage and set, extensive backstage and production areas to the seating tribunes and car parks - in an empty space on the mangroves along the Ras al-Khaimah Corniche waterfront. Terry – designer of the show as well as being responsible for the lighting design - with his team at Lighthouse Productions have designed, produced and supplied equipment and technical services for many prestigious events in the region. A project like this with a complete site build starting a month before the show date was challenging, high pressure and ‘pushed the envelope’ in every way. Terry stated that “Intricate projections were mapped onto the side screens for the show whilst a large cast of dancers and actors played out onstage, so it was essential that I had the best and most versatile lighting fixtures to both support the video projections and to ensure that everyone could clearly see all the stage action across the vast area.”

ETA March 2017

He continued by stating, “There was no roof on the stage, so all the lighting positions were created from a massive structure at the back with horizontal and angled lines of trusses sub-hung either side of a central V-shape.” Thirty-two Robe MMX WashBeams were utilized, rigged all over the structure. They were used extensively for general lighting, washing the stage, for gobo and beam work onto the floor and also to complement the fireworks, the majority of which were rigged to a 72 metre wide x 44 metre arch erected behind the stage. The MMX WashBeam is one of Terry’s favourite fixtures. He loves it for its “Brightness, flexibility and smooth transition between wash and beam functionality”. He also comments that for the Middle East region, where shows are often organised at short notice, a multi-purpose fixture like the MMX Wash Beam gives LDs multiple possibilities if they have a very compressed timeframe to get their show on! “The handle-ability of this fixture has been invaluable time and time again,” he said. There were 22 x 300E Beams on the show, 14 rigged on horizontal trusses both sides of the stage and used for punchy beam to complement the projections and the other eight on the verticals. Twelve ColorWash 575 ATs – still going strong after over 10 years’ service in the dusty, arid desert environment of the UAE – provided rear and side lighting onto the dancers. One of Lighthouse’s recent purchases has been Pointes and 24 of these were used on this show, rigged on the angled trusses either side and used for a variety of aerial effects and as head-height lighting for actors entering the stage space on a mechanical boat prop.

The Pointes were combined with the MMX WashBeams and some 7K searchlights upstage on the deck to present a number of ‘beam layers’ which could be revealed and juxtaposed as the show unfolded. Terry comments that the light weight of the Pointes made them handy for rigging almost anywhere on the structure at the back, while their intensity and the quality of the optics enabled them to ‘hold their own’ against other more powerful lightsources across the 40 scenes involved in the performance. Twelve PARFect 100s along the front of stage left and right were used to illuminate the various dance troupes participating in the show, with another 12 dotted around at the back. Other Robe fixtures on the rig included CycFX 8s, LEDWash 1200s and ColorMix 250s. The big creative challenges of the show for Terry and the Lighthouse Productions team were making the big bold statements needed to reinforce the show with its important cultural message, along with presenting the drama and excitement associated with a large scale spectacle. “I was extremely proud of what we delivered and also working very closely with the talented local Emiratis,” he stated. Terry has been using Robe for several years and Lighthouse Productions has been a big investor of the brand. He feels that Robe’s move to set up direct representation and distribution in the region with the foundation of Robe Middle East Trading LLC has been smart and positive, enhancing what had been an already organic growth pattern.

INDIA

India’s Republic Day Parade Complemented With Great Sound

Harman solutions ensure that for the first time, India’s Republic Day celebrations had an endto-end digital system that provided the best sound. India, the world’s largest democracy, is a distinct nation of its own kind. With ‘Unity in Diversity’ as its acclaimed identity tag, the country represents a very harmonious confluence of diverse tenets into a uniquely ‘seamless’ blend, and reflecting a pulsating oneness. One of the grandest occasions of reverbing this oneness is its Republic Day Celebrations that are highlighted by the Grand Parade, on 26th January every year, along the Rajpath in the national capital of Delhi. This year’s Republic Day Parade, while it looked as grand as ever, if not more, it sounded great too – to send the aural pleasure of the distinct music and commentary uniformly all across the venue – with Harman. A snappy account:

R

epublic Day Parade – the largest and most important national parade of India – takes place on the 26th of January every year commemorating the country’s reincarnation as a Republic Nation on the same date in 1956. Held along the Rajpath – the grand way from the

Presidential residence till the India Gate – the parade showcases the country’s defence capability and cultural heritage, and is attended by its top political and military brass, besides a State Guest from world nations, and, of course, thousands of citizens. While it’s very important to Indians, the parade is attended by all the foreign Ambassadors to India, making it an internationally important event for the country, as the world’s largest Democratic Republic. Telecasted on the National television and broadcast on the National radio, the parade is the most awaited event of the year. With such grandeur being its matrix, it is of high importance that the 2.1 km stretch of Rajpath has the best audio for the spectators. The 1, Signal Unit of the Indian Army takes care of the Public Address (PA) System. The success of the show not just depends on how well the contingents and tableaux perform, it also depends on how well the speech is delivered to the spectators. This, obviously, brings a high degree of challenges to the organizers. Till now, the 1, Signal Unit was using a rudimentary setup to transmit audio across the venue, which consisted of analog audio lines from one rack location to another. While it is a cumbersome task logistically, it also involved high noise and unavailability risk. The high system availability requirement of the event brings one more challenge, to have hot standby amplifier backup- which means that a standby amplifier will take over in case any primary amplifier fails. The organizers were using age-old manual switchovers to achieve this. When the Indian Army decided to revamp the system, Harman was chosen after a tough competition with various brands. To connect five different rack locations, Harman offered a system with Dante and CobraNet backbone for transmission of audio. Soundcraft mixers were provided for the operators while Digital Signal Processors by BSS were provided for audio transmission. Crown DriveCore Install Network Amplifiers were used for amplification. amplifiers were chosen for a unique dual input with priority router feature. The amplifiers were fed with both digital and analog input which was processed by priority router onboard. In case the digital input was to fail for any unforeseen reason, the analog input was configured to get routed instantly. The amplifiers also were fed with onboard DSP with latency, crossover, band pass filters, input/output EQ, limiter and various other monitoring features. This amplifier line switching was achieved by Crown CT8SHO amplifier line switcher- without any human intervention. Each PA zone along the Rajpath was fed by two different amplifiers which provide redundancy for loudspeaker line connectivity. The loudspeakers for the event were chosen after high scrutiny by the Signal Unit. The Loudspeakers needed to reproduce the speech in best possible way and needed to be suitable for music as well. While according to general wisdom, the cabinet type loudspeaker would fit the requirement, they are hindrances to the line of sight and do not have any aesthetic appeal, which would not do justice

to an event of such splendor. With a view to balancing the both, the Army’s event think tank chose the JBL CBT 70J-1 with CBT 70JE-1 extension. The column type construction of the loudspeaker blended perfectly with the existing architecture. The system control and monitoring was achieved using the HiQnet Audio Architect, on which the custom panels provided the command of complete system on a single screen for the operator. For the first time, India’s Republic Day celebrations had an end-to-end digital system that provided the best sound for the most awaited event of the year. “Harman professional has been the first choice of premium audio gear for National events such as the Republic Day Parade, and the Prime Minister’s Independence Day Address to the nation,” said Prashant Govindan, Senior Director, Harman Professional (India & Sri Lanka). “Both these events are high security and high profile in nature, attended by top political leaders of India and dignitaries from world nations,” he said. “These shows have seen a lifetime of the earlier installed JBL MRX solution which is now replaced by JBL CBT 70J-1 Loudspeakers with CBT 70JE-1 Extensions, powered by Crown Drive Core Install Network Amplifiers with BSS Digital Signal Processors to deliver an end to end digital audio experience with utmost clarity of speech as well musical content.” www.harman.com

Techeconomics Play Best At Vibrant Gujarat

First of its kind 270° projection marks the inauguration of 8th edition

By Ram Bhavanashi

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivering the Inaugural Address

Vibrant Gujarat 2017 – the eighth edition of the Western Indian State’s biennial economic summit, organized at the grand Mahatma Mandir Convention Centre in Gandhinagar in the second week of January – was unique for reasons more than one. Often ambitiously referred to as ‘Davos of the East,’ the four-day congregation brought together a very distinct galaxy of global financial leaders that actually shone in the matrix of an incredible audio-visual glitz. The high-profile event where it had the country’s top leadership leading from front was rendered in all its glory by an equally large contingency of technology players. An ETA exclusive:

T

he term Vibrant Gujarat, they say, was an intelligently coined name for an event that is expected not just to reflect the ambitions of a growth seeking State, but also vibrate across the global dream merchants to be able to devise and implement programmes for all-round development of the State.

been identified with the theme. The four-day congregation organized from 10-13 January (Inaugural Ceremony held on 9 Jan.) thus provided for intense and focused interactions amongst key policy makers, industry leaders, global thought leaders, regulators, renowned academicians and investors from all across the globe.

While that being the intent, the 2017 edition of the event themed ‘Sustainable Economic and Social Development,’ apparently lived up to its reputation, nay, expectation, as it brought together thought and business leaders that have

The size and scale of the event demanded an exhaustive deployment of rented AV communication network, complementing the already existing massively installed AV systems. In order to meet such a huge requirement,

the Sate-owned Centre For Environmental and Planning Technology (CEPT) University was appointed as the Event Consultant for all its audio-visual set-ups. “It is a big event, by any measure,” says Narendra Naidu of Rhino Engineers Pvt Ltd., the AV consultant for event. “While the sheer size of the event makes it a big task for any consultant, its scaling is what makes it so prestigious, and thus challenging as well.” That the prestigious event was to be inaugurated by none other than the Prime Minister of the country for a whole big galaxy of Premiers, Ministers and Ambassadors from across the world, besides global business leaders, thought leaders, academicians, government officials and VVIPs for full four days of intense deliberations made it all the more prestigious. “The stakes were extremely high,” asserts Naidu. “No room for any little error. It needed not just competence, but a focused approach to the task.” This prestigious task was entrusted to New Delhi-based Dynamix Media, a member of PRG Global alliance, for providing complete audio-visual services for the mega event. The task involved complete set-up of the AV deployment for the grand Inaugural Ceremony, CEO’s conference, and the seminar programmes.

“It in deed was a big task,” recalls T S Gopalakrishnan, AV consultant for Dynamix Media. “The size and scaling of the event, and meeting such an expansive requirement makes it sheer experiential,” he explains. “We lived it.”

The AV Scope

The grand Mahatma Mandir, venue for the mega event, as it is, has its installed sound system and large LED Screens, but what made it so remarkable this time was its augmentation with a 270-degree projection system- aimed at providing unique visual effect, besides presenting the State in all its glory and opportunities. The total visual canvas was configured to glow with a resolution of 34780 pixels rendered in by as many as 22 units of Christie 22K DLP projectors mounted all over the Centre in an expansive U-shape to create a unique visual experience, duly integrating the installed LEDs. Two double stacks of projectors were used for IMAG. All the video signals were transmitted to the projectors through fiber. A total of 24 video channels were used to project the images.

interaction, along with large screen displays providing the visual experience.

A number of smaller venues within the complex were used for conducting the numerous seminars/meetings on a variety of topics for the duration of the event. While these seminar halls have already been equipped with complete installed AV, they were augmented with additional set-ups with a view to providing enhanced user experiences by means of video feeds on LED screens, and supporting routing network. A dedicated meeting room was constructed on-site to hold the prestigious ‘in-camera’ conferencing of the Prime Minister with CEOs from select global enterprises, who came to participate in the convention. Conference Microphone system was provided to enable effective

The event being so big, has had its own complexity of challenges both in structure and texture, informs Gopal. According to him, there was a need to construct temporary venues within the complex, and it was specified by the client that these venues should also provide user experiences similar to the permanent facilities. That required a high degree of focused effort to be put in to ensure complete acoustic isolation between multiple meeting spaces, though they were spaced next to one another physically. This meant providing strict specification for acoustic isolation used inside the room as well as ensuring proper physical structure so that there is minimal leakage of sound from one venue to the other. Critical tests were conducted in the spaces to ensure that they were compliant to the requirements specified by the client. Equally important, selection of loudspeakers was also done in a systematic manner by working out proper simulation of their performance inside the rooms and testing various electro-acoustic parameters. Based on the results the consultants arrived at, specific make and model of the loudspeakers were selected. And to ensure that the actual response was adequate and met the client’s requirement, tests were performed to assess the systems’ actual performance on a sample room specifically constructed for the purpose and client’s approval for the same was taken before the install teams went about their on-field execution job.

“A week to go before the event, the company who had the specific models of loudspeakers on rental expressed their inability to meet the event dates,” recalls Gopal. “With absolutely no time to spare, it was decided to just purchase these from the manufacturer and thankfully, those models were in stock and could be shipped on time to deploy in the venue!”

“This is, perhaps, a rare precedent for a rental and staging scenario in India,” says Gopal. However, though, selecting the room dynamics and materials of the wall / floor / ceiling and the loudspeakers was not the end! The install teams had a near chilling experience due to a sheer unexpected oddity of the systems vendor turning away from the job citing inability to meet the dates.

A more serious challenge though was also in store for the consulting team- in terms of sound from one room being heard in other or disturbing the proceedings outside. This was due to the large number of wireless microphones demanded by the client for these venues. Each of the venue required as many as eight wireless channels- totaling to 60 simultaneous wireless channels for the seminar rooms. This, clearly meant an acutely meticulous approach to the system design and selection specific frequency band for each room. With proper frequency planning and management this anticipated problem was eliminated completely. “It did require a very clinical approach; and put our expertise to one of those testing applications- of complex situations,” recall Naidu and Gopal. “Gladly, we had the expertise to address that.”

The Vibes That Connect Vibrant Gujarat The Vibrant Gujarat event, arguably, one of the biggest in Aisa, has many unique things to qualify its significance and relevance. The scale of the event comprised: • It had registration requests for over 52,000- apparently the largest in Asia • It had as many as close to 4000 requests for B2B, and B2G meetings • The event, as a novel introduction, debuted the Nobel Prize Series with a view to creating a platform for stimulating innovation and creating thinking among young students of science. • As part of the initiative, it brought to the event as many as nine Nobel laureates from diverse fields of science. It had special programmes branded as Nobel Media Exhibition and a Nobel Laureates Conference. The Nobel Media Exhibition – showcasing science behind those innovations, and how the underlying science has impacted the lives of people – was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi on 9 January

• A conference with the nine Nobel Laureates conducted on Jan 10 was telecast real time across schools and colleges in the State by Bhaskaracharya Institute for Space Applications & Geo Informatics (BISAG) • As many as 21 eminent dignitaries, including Presidents, Prime Ministers, and Ministers, and as many as 24 Ambassadors from all over the world took part in the mega event • The event was also marked by the attendance of as many as 35 CEOs from across the world, and 23 CEOs/ Chairmen from India More, the event vibrated through as many as 16 Country Seminars, 15 Theme Seminars, and three Action Seminars, deliberating on diverse topics for sustainable development. These Action Seminars, debuted as yet another novel factor, was organized in association with The Value Web, renowned international NGO from Switzerland.

A number of large format LED screens of various sizes were positioned with relevant content duly prepared for enabling the delegates to check the happenings at various venues throughout the duration of the event. The installed facility at the Open Air Amphitheatre was used as a venue for the live performances to entertain the delegates. Cultural performances at the site included those by eminent artistes such as Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Ms. Sunita Bhuyan besides other maestros.

That the event went on without a hiccup, in terms of AV facilitation, it was a win-win situation for Naidu and Gopal and the teams involved with the task. “We are obviously thrilled with the experience,” recalls Naidu. “A very ambitious task accomplished with precision; our competence proven, and expertise showed up.” www.dynamixmc.com www.rhinoengineers.in www.vibrantgujarat.com
