The Intercom segment seems to be heating up. The recent BroadcastAsia exhibition saw Riedel launch in Asia their BOLERO wireless intercom system whereas RTS also launched their wireless intercom system ROAMEO at the same exhibition. A lot more thought process has been implemented in the new solutions taking into account even better reliability as well as ease of use with the user in mind. Intercom systems play a critical role in the Live environment be it in theaters, concerts or even in the broadcast space and not surprisingly demands have helped push manufacturers to “reinvent” their intercom solutions.

We are also very pleased that we managed to pull off another successful event, bringing SynAudCon’s training to the Philippines. We had a total of 39 paying delegates attending the training by Pat Brown on “The Principles of Sound System Design.” It is especially gratifying when delegates come up to you and share their appreciation as to what we are trying to do for the industry. Without sponsors we will not be able to bring trainings at a more affordable cost. In this respect we thank Biamp for its support. This is the second time that Biamp has supported our initiative and their objective is to enable as many personnel involved in the industry to upgrade or refresh their knowledge and skills. This is an admirable philosophy of the company.

If you have been too busy and have not noticed, we are already in the half year mark. Time really flies. Remember to take a break so that you will feel refreshed and ready for the next half of the year.

Adamson And Rewire Welcome Sunphonix As First E-Series Partner In Japan markets, with Sunphonix now poised to better service an elite international user base.

After participating in the Applied Certification training – a two-day course presented by Paul Ras of Adamson’s Japanese distributor, Rewire Inc., and Adamson’s David Dohrmann – the Sunphonix team wasted little time putting the system to work on some high-profile events.

JAPAN: Kawasaki-based production company Sunphonix recently acquired an E-Series system from Adamson Systems Engineering, making them the first E-Series partner in the Japanese market.

The package is comprised of E15 three-way, true line source enclosures and complementing E219 subwoofers, offering Sunphonix a significant competitive advantage to attract high-level domestic and international tours and large-scale music festivals in their home market.

“We were extremely impressed by the performance of the E-Series – such a nice, clear sound with a lot of punch,” offers Sunphonix System Designer Akihiko Higashi, noting that Adamson’s Applied Certification training was a welcome value-add that will ensure Sunphonix can offer the highest level of performance for future clients. “The program was very user-friendly and the presenters were very cooperative. Australia’s Elite Event Technology Bulks Up On ProCable AUSTRALIA: Canberra’s Elite Events recently added another 700 metres of ProCable 18X1.5 assemblies to their already significant inventory of the popular six-circuit cables. Darren adds, “In the past we made our own DMX and Ethernet cabling. The ProPlex purchases were the first time we bought complete data cables off the shelf. Staging Connections Supports Industry With New Recruitment Event

AUSTRALIA: Staging Connections’ new event, ACCESS AV, is dedicated to educating and encouraging aspiring events professionals to kick start their career with Staging Connections. The inaugural ACCESS AV was held on 27 April 2017 at ANZ stadium and attracted 110 attendees from a variety of colleges, TAFE’s and direct public.

The program provides attendees with a taste of how a career in AV and event technology could look, complete with demonstrations, hands-on experience and the chance to have one-on-ones with experienced technicians and event professionals from Staging Connections.

Attendees were excited and amazed by an array of technical stations, that provided opportunities to practice and develop new skills such as mixing a virtual band using a high-end Yamaha console, program moving lights using a smart phone, learn how to mix multiple cameras, and operate moving LX on GrandMA Wing and GrandMA2.

Unusual Rigging & Engineering LLC Enable Disney And Cameron Mackintosh's Mary Poppins At The Dubai Opera House DUBAI: Disney and Cameron Mackintosh's Mary Poppins tour has taken the world by storm. With sell out dates across the UK and in Zurich, the perfect nanny landed in the United Arab Emirates where the musical played to a full house till May 25th.

Eighteen sea containers were loaded with set and stage equipment in order to bring the show to Dubai - except for the rigging and a truss frame for new front of house scenery, which has been supplied locally by Unusual Rigging and Engineering LLC. Chris Boone, production manager on the show, explained: “The Dubai Opera House is a truly massive venue – bigger than anywhere else we’ve ever staged Mary Poppins. Because of this, we decided to have extra proscenium scenery – essentially creating a false proscenium – so I contacted Denis Bramhall at Unusual Rigging and Engineering LLC, who subsequently supplied all the rigging for the entire UAE run of the show.”

Chris had worked with Unusual Rigging in the UK for the previous two legs of the tour and was thrilled to have the opportunity to pull on the resources of the Dubai team for the final run. “The cost savings for us are phenomenal. If you consider that to transport equipment from the UK to Dubai would mean around ten weeks at sea, being able to hire the exact same kit on home turf meant we were saving ourselves ten weeks of rental costs. And while we have used a combination of production riggers from the UK and Dubai for load in, headed by Alex Taylor, when it comes to load out, the Dubai team will take complete control.”

It is extremely difficult to fly Mary up to the ceiling so they designed and fabricated a landing platform for her, which is suspended between two of the lighting bridges in order to receive her. The sponsors also had booths at the open space within the venue to showcase their solutions from microphones to in-ear monitors.

The event was a precursor to the launching of the NEXT Music Awards that is to take place in August this year in Singapore. “The NEXT Platform is a rallying call for emerging local talents. We have many talents in Singapore and we wanted a single event to showcase these talents,� said Johnny Ong of UnUsUaL Limited. The event saw hordes of fans showing up not only to support their favourite artiste but also the other talents. The talents displayed a range of music genre from pop, jazz, country, fusion to mando-pop.

UnUsUaL had also invited some special guests to the event in the hope of expanding the NEXT brand and exposing emerging local talents to beyond Singapore.

Adam Hall Asia Holds First Distributor Summit

SINGAPORE: It was two years ago that Adam Hall set up its Asia office in Singapore, helmed by Chandan Mahtani, as Managing Director, Adam Hall Asia Pte Ltd. The office is meant as a support office for distributors within the region and it also features a full-fledged Showroom. Only in Singapore, due to the size of the market, it deals directly with the industry be it SIs, Distributors or Dealers. The Showroom was designed to allow SIs to bring clients from around the region to hear, see and experience the Adam Hall plethora of solutions.

The Summit kicked off with the COO of Adam Hall, Markus Jahnel, welcoming the guests and this was followed with the introduction and demonstration of some of the new products by Chandan and technical support executive, Vinod Kumar. Also at the summit was a familiar figure for those in Asia, Bodo Falkenried, Head of Global Business Development, Adam Hall. Bodo was instrumental in the setting up of the Asia office.

Chandan’s main task over the two years was to overhaul its distribution arrangement in Asia and the task is nearly completed with just a few more countries to be sorted out.

Thus the timing for the first Distributor Summit was well, timely.

The Stinger G3 series 8”, 10” and 12” were demonstrated with Chandan highlighting that the biggest improvement of the Stinger G3 over its predecessor G2 was the built-in DSP. Guests were also given a demonstration of the improved MAUI 28 G2 and the MAUI 11 G2 and were informed that the portable speakers now have the potential to be used in an installation with the introduction of new adaptors and custom brackets.

After the excitement of listening to the P900, the guests were also briefed on the Gravity microphone stands, the Cameo V60 battery operated lights as well as the MAUI 5 GO. ETA: How has the business in Asia-Pacific been since the setup in Singapore?

Markus: Asia-Pacific is very important and strategic to our growth. We are a global company and Asia is a key focus for us as the market is developing quickly. Sales wise it is growing steadily, Currently AsiaPacific accounts for 5% of our revenue. Do note that that is 5% of an 80 million Euro company, so it is not a small sum.

ETA: Has the setting up of Adam Hall Asia been justifiable?

Markus: We had actually started market research about the region four years ago that led to us setting up Adam Hall Asia two years ago. It was certainly the right decision by us. Not just the setting up but the location as well, that being Singapore. Our investment in the infrastructure including the showroom is correct. This is actually our contribution to our partners. The showroom is here to support them plus we have a good team here that provides additional services to them such as training.

ETA: Tell us more about the Warehouse facility in Ningbo, China.

Markus: We set up the warehouse one and a half years ago within a trade free zone. This has had significant effect for us. 90% of our solutions across all our brands are available in the warehouse. This helps our customers in keeping their cost down in terms of freight and of course there is a quicker lead time as it is being shipped out of China.

ETA: How about the manufacturing aspect?

Markus: We are a real manufacturer with R&D in Germany.

Yes we do manufacture most of our products in China.

Our OEM facility is a reputable company plus we station a German Engineer for QC check in the facility. All R&D

We believe that within the next 3 years, China will be our number one market in Asia-Pacific.

ETA: Is there any particular brand that is doing well for Adam Hall in Asia?

Markus: LD is doing very well for us in Asia. Gravity is fairly new as we started in 2015 but it is picking up very quickly for us. One reason is that the design and style has made Gravity a “sexy product” that speaks to the new generation of musicians out there.

Asia-Pacific however is very diverse. In some countries our sales is mainly project based whereas in some countries like Australia, New Zealand and the Philippines we do very well in the retail stores.

ETA: What do you feel is driving Adam Hall’s sales?

Markus: Simple. We offer quality solutions at reasonable price. Our products are well designed and engineered in Germany with very good technical specifications for attractive prices. All we do we do with passion and enthusiasm – this is one important key why we are so successful. The stunt was designed to showcase the all-round performance of the F-Pace, which saw it having to withstand forces of 6.5G. But the car was not the only one having to withstand the stress of the stunt, Driver Terry Grant trained for two months in preparation to make sure he could withstand G-Forces greater than those experienced by space shuttle pilots. The lighting features the SGM-G Spot.

Allen & Heath Enhances dLive Scene System Allen & Heath has released V1.50 firmware for its flagship dLive S Class and dLive C Class ranges. This latest update includes multiple improvements and additions to the scene system to meet the needs of theatre, festival and other complex show applications.

The Scene Update system has many enhancements including an improved Manual mode and new Auto-Tracking mode, both of which can apply changes in Absolute or Relative modes. Additionally, an enhanced GUI offering increased scope and granularity of parameter control has been implemented for Recall Filters and Global Safes.

Festival-friendly tools to allow scenes to be imported from USB have also been added.

Proel Launches New Axiom Products At ProLight+Sound

Proel has launched a record number of new loudspeaker systems during this year's ProLight+Sound in Frankfurt, across multiple sectors of the markets for installed sound and portable sound products.

Representing a new direction for its Axiom professional loudspeaker brand, the AX12C vertical column array is aimed primarily at corporate audio-visual applications requiring response and output beyond traditional speechonly column speaker systems, as well as a wide range of fixed installations from clubs to commercial facilities.

Consisting of twelve 3.5-inch drive units housed in a structurally rigid aluminium enclosure, the ACX12C delivers wide 100° horizontal dispersion, and natural cardioid behaviour thanks to its transmission line back-loading.

The new Box Corner, the BOX-30-HD, has replaced welds with bolts, and an open structure with plated sides to increase overall strength and improve the integral structure of the Box Corner. As a fully plated and bolted element, it is much stronger than a regular Box Corner, and allows users to build any 2D or 3D structures without losing involuntary strength due to the corner types used.

Extensive testing eventually produced a design that is not only cost efficient, since over-dimensioning was ruled out, but also tried and tested, to offer the safest solution possible. Due to its clever design, where the plated sides

grandMA2 Software Release Version 3.3 Includes More Powerful Features

MA Lighting has announced another significant software release for its flagship grandMA2 lighting control platform – version 3.3 introduces new features as well as a re-imagined help and fixture library system. Hundreds of smaller improvements have also been incorporated to assist smoother workflow for the operator and programmer, making more time for creativity.

With the new software, the MA Lighting fixture library is now available online via the Fixture Share service. After logging in, users can add their own fixture files or download the latest versions of fixture files which were not available at the software release moment, ensuring a fully up to date fixture library for all MA Lighting users. Additional search and rating functionality allows users to generate their own favourite fixture library.

Another huge development with the grandMA2 version 3.3 software is the fully re-worked partial show-read functionality which simplifies and streamlines the process of getting a touring showfile to output correctly across any lighting system, making it ideal for touring and festival situations. Offset for all Pan/Tilt functionality is now incorporated and several MIB workflow improvements have been added.

The MA VPU (Video Processing Unit) now has a completely reworked Warper functionality, including pixel-exact U/V mapping, and much higher resolution for more precise adjustments.

A snapshot / masking tools has been added allowing a screenshot of your preferred output to become a mask for your daily content. More creative layer mixing modes have been added that allow different ways of “blending” between layers.

Additionally, the grandMA2 help system has been re-worked completely. A new look and feel with improved search functionality gives even more online and offline support.

All topics have been revisited and updated to the current status for best workflow support.

The new software release version 3.3 adds the powerful feature called link aggregation (LAG) functionality for better redundant networks. This functionality is fully compatible with any standard Ethernet network switch and can be used in meshed installations. Green Hippo Showcases Hippotizer SHAPE The recent ProLight + Sound exhibition saw Green Hippo deliver a stunning display using Hippotizer V4 Media Servers. Using the latest software version of Hippotizer SHAPE, Green Hippo mapped and blended three projectors on to a highly complex tea pot model.

The Green Hippo outfit also put the company’s Auto Alignment tool through its paces, demonstrating SHAPE’s time saving capabilities. Using inexpensive fibre optic sensors embedded in the model, the tool reduces the job of realigning projectors in an installation to a single button press.

A further example of SHAPE’s aptitude was given via Green Hippo’s collaboration with Cast software, showing BlackTrax on the Green Hippo stand with moving picture frames.

Using cameras, BlackTrax, tracks objects in real-time; Hippotizer SHAPE uses this data to map on to objects in 3D, even as they are moving.

The R-series provides more creative freedom, and greatly reduces setup time and cost thanks to their thin, lightweight and bendable design. Designed for retail, advertising, venues, and visitor attractions applications, the R-series frees customers from the limitations of traditional LED displays when digitizing their visual communication.

Tarm Presents New Tarm DOT Laser Light System Tarm DOT is a DMX multi effect projector with a great white balance and unique glass effects. It’s a pure diode solution with analog colour modulation and a guaranteed output power of 3’900 mW. Amongst others, the Tarm DOT can create the ‘Microstar’ effect, which simulates a starry sky, just like it was a real one: In white light or in many different colour shades.

Besides the Microstar effect, there are other optical effects built in that can be triggered similarly to an optical bench.

The control of the Tarm DOT is through DMX, so no laser software is required. This allows for easy integration to existing setups, especially also on large stages and at large scale productions.

The Tarm DOT is equipped with optical/glass effects, which means that the projections are flicker free, as no moving parts, like scanners, are used for creating the display. The effects are optically generated, which makes them suitable for TV productions.

Due to the analog colour modulation it is possible to get up to 160,000 colour shades, including white. The Tarm DOT is equipped with a red (1’200 mW / 638 nm), a green (1’000 mW / 520 nm), and a blue (2’200 mW / 450 nm) diode laser source.

A four level zoom lens allows for zooming the laser projection and thus adapt it to the requirements of the venue.

The laser systems have a compact housing, thus they’re easily integrated into existing lighting setups and existing room concepts. Sennheiser Digital 6000 Offers No Compromise Sennheiser recently launched its Digital 6000, a twochannel receiver that combines the audio quality and long range (LR) transmission mode of the Digital 9000 with 244 MHz of switching bandwidth, and an innovative user interface that makes it easier for users. The Digital 6000 also uses Sennheiser's True Bit Diversity and predictive algorithms to create a stable wireless link.

The Digital 6000 comprises a twochannel receiver in two different versions, a bodypack and a handheld transmitter as well as a rack-mount 19” charging unit.

With its LR mode, the two-channel receiver can find reliable transmission paths in any environment, and ensures superior quality audio signals even in high-frequency scenarios. It is also compatible with all Sennheiser UHF antennas.

The bodypack can be combined with lavalier microphones and headsets, and is suitable as a high-end solution for

instruments like guitar and bass. The BA 61 lithiumion battery pack ensures up to 6.5 hours of operation.

Alternatively, operation is also possible with batteries from the B 60 battery set. Additionally, the transmitter is compatible with the EK 6042 and EM 9046 in Long Range mode.

The handheld transmitter is compatible with microphone heads from evolution wireless G3, 2000, Digital 9000, and the Neumann KK 204 / 205 series. Maximum transmission reliability is delivered by the renowned Long Range mode superior audio quality by the proprietary Sennheiser Audio Codec (SeDAC) from the Digital 9000.

In the ever-changing landscape of Bangalore’s nightlife, pubs have been an enduring feature. As the city expands so has the need for nightlife spots that move beyond the central business district and this is what makes the launch of 1522 – The Pub, on new BEL road a big step. In a relatively new area of the city, that’s fast developing, 1522 stands out, pubs here are few and far between, but a most welcome sight for younger, working professionals.

As the third brand under the 1522 chain of pubs, the New BEL road branch is set to be the flagship property for the chain. A resto-bar, with an ambience that’s hard to dislike 1522, is just the right spot to unwind after a long day in the office or to just enjoy a Sunday afternoon beer. After some deliberation and based on the recommendation of a previous client the management of 1522 approached E&E Systems India Pvt Ltd to provide the audio-visual set up for the pub, during the nascent stages of development. After preliminary discussions and a site visit, it was clear that this was going to be a significantly large project for the team.

The most critical factor in this project was the need to provide top of the line audio-visual solutions that worked within a reasonable budget for the 1522 management.

After multiple site visits, reassessing the audio-visual requirements and negotiations a system was chosen. It sounded incredible, was reasonably priced and fitted within the budget of 1522’s management.

With the specifics out of the way, the arduous process of constructing the venue commenced while simultaneously the E&E Systems team, lead by Executive Director Poncho and Technical Manager Gladson, worked on designing the audio-visual set up, that would give the pub just the right ambience.

Using a range of PrymAudio products the final installation was designed to uniformly cover the entire venue without compromising on sound quality.

The PrymAudio 10” S10’s and 8” S8’s, compact two way loudspeakers that were installed at the venue consist of a low frequency woofer with a highpower magnet assembly and a titanium diaphragm, higher frequency compression driver with a 1.4" mounted on a low distortion 90° horizontal by 50° vertical dispersion fully rotatable horn, protected by SecureOverdriver.To have a full frequency bandwidth reproduced faithfully the team installed two of the PrymAudio 15” sub-woofer S15.

Amaazia – A Truly Ama‘zing’ Experience

Hi-Tech Audio Systems ensures installed audio system complements the experience

Surat, the commercial capital of Gujarat, is often credited with many titles and attributes. Famously referred to as ‘textile capital’ and ‘diamond capital’ of India, the erstwhile Suryapur city has recently acquired yet another embellishment- ‘city of water parks.’

Fairytale dreams often come true not just for children but for adults as well. Imagine exploring a tidal wave of fun to a tropical paradise in an amazing water park; experiencing the thrill of the world-class theme park rides and myriad entertainment joints coming for the first time to India- from serene to extreme, all under one single roof! Stories, it appears not only come alive, but stay alive.

A sprawling, 16-acre whimsical land, named Amaazia – in tune with its trappings – in Surat, is a new wonderment in town. Promoted by Surat’s leading Realty major Rajgreen Group, and designed by the famed Australian firm Sanderson Group – known for creating Sea World in Canada, and Warner Bros. Studio in Australia, besides

others – the Amaazia sports some veritable entertainment statements: • Asia’s largest water pool • India’s first water park with 100 per cent imported rides, brought from Italy, Germany and Switzerland • First in Asia to bring world’s number one ride King Cobra, • And more like a variety of audio plays and fun places.

Playing an important part in the whole entertainment fare is the audio component that had to stand out as one impacting factor, contributing to the experience. Delhibased audio and entertainment solutions major Hi-Tech Audio Systems landed this prestigious as well challenging job of design and build the audio set-up towards making the thrill park rides more real.

“The client wanted us to design a centralized background music (BGM) system in a zoned pattern with announcements to be made from one central location,” explains Manik Gupta, Director (Sales)-Projects at Hi-Tech Audio Systems. “Understandably, they wanted different music to be played in different zones, but control their volume levels and ON/OFF for each zone from the centralized hub.”

According to Manik, who stayed in the centre of the whole design-build process, they were all clear about one spec: that the park is open almost 365 days a year, the systems to be installed had to be really sturdy, and reliable, to withstand any harsh environment. The client was also keen to have a solution provider who Manik Gupta has an office in Mumbai, or nearby Surat so that they stood to get any after-sales-support immediately.

The client had a few team members from a Project Management Consultancy firm who had worked on the Ferrari World project in Abu Dhabi which meant the client brief had inputs coming from them as well. In addition to the BGM, the client had also wanted local music source in a few areas like Lazy River Area; Rain Dance Area etc. at certain times of the day, so that brought additional specs to the design.

Team Hi-Tech visited the site; did a thorough need analysis, and took a good two weeks to understand the client requirement, and the site challenges before it submitted the design and system proposal.

“We made a detailed proposal along with speaker locations and block schematics after the first meeting,” informs Manik. “Not many changes, except a few in speaker quantities- because they were not required in some office/ admin areas,” he explains, “We had designed a very sturdy and fool-proof system, so we to stick with our proposal till the end.”

Amazing Design…That Is… Accordingly, Hi-Tech teams set out to design the audio ambience for the entire stretch. The complete park was divided into 11 Audio Zones for different pipe music in each zone with varied audio levels. One big challenge in designing the system was that there was no such acoustic partition between zones; more, the speaker selection and their locations were to be chosen in such a way that the spill over between the zones was just minimal, if not zero.

Further, the speakers were to be IP55 rated or even better.

The system designer had to choose speakers for a design that would create the right atmosphere and emotionwhether for an adrenaline-pumping ride or a relaxed ambience in indoors or outdoors throughout the parks and attractions, yet with minimal spill over between zones. The design also laid a particular emphasis on camouflaging the systems to avoid tampering and disturbing the ambience of the place.

wave generation to play EDM style music and to overcome high noise levels of water babbles, and public cheer.

The complete park is surrounded by a free flowing Lazy River where people can get in a tube and relax and hence needed a system with rich ambience music. The complete Lazy River was covered with Bose Garden speakers Freespace 360P which were camouflaged with a unique design by the architects. These speakers have a 360° coverage and hence covered both walking pathways and the Lazy River.

Recalls Manik: “For few areas like Lazy River where we had proposed Floor Mount garden speakers Bose Panarray 360P, we discussed with the team from The Sanderson Group for camouflaging it with something which is sturdy and can protect the speakers from tampering. They came up with a wonderful custom design to cover the speakers.”

According to him, with a view to making a very impacting system design in certain critical areas like the Wave Pool Area, and Rain Dance Area which are the park’s main attractions besides the rides, Team Hi-Tech designed 3D simulations.

For the back-end support, the system designer had asked for two Control Room locations considering the size of the park, and also for Fiber Optic network to minimize the otherwise transmission losses via the conventional copper cables. “This helped us to eliminate central routing matrix to avoid single point of failure,” explains Manik. “We utilised the existing network of the park to connect between the two Control Rooms over DANTE Audio. Audio and Control Processor with appropriate number of I/O channels, Call Stations, Message Server, Multi-channel Audio Source were proposed to meet the functionality requirement of the customer.”

The Systems In The Design…

Bose Professional Partner that Hi-Tech is, they understandably chose a complete range of Bose products for the whole of the install. For Wave Pool Area they used Bose Flagship Point and Shoot LT Range of weatherized speakers and subwoofers with 3 units of LT 9702WR and 2 units of dual 12-inch MB24WR subwoofers. These systems was deployed to produce high SPL pumping music during

Rain Dance Area is another big attraction of the park. This indoor area is like a night club with a unique design of sprinklers from ceiling, sides and floor. Speakers for this space were again proposed to be weather proof/sprinkle proof so the installer employed 4 units of iconic IP55 Bose Panarray 802 speakers with IP56 MB12WR Subwoofers to produce thumping loud music through DJ. Says Manik “so from King Cobra rides to kiddies’ areas, indoors and outdoors, in queue lines and eating areas, we created a sound that is just the right ambience for a funpacked day.”

The Hi-Tech Exec, while he based the success of the install on his design expertise, he acknowledges the superlative performance specs of the brands his team employed- Bose, Biamp, Alcorn MC Bridge, Klotz Cables etc. to ensure that the desired quality and reliability was achieved.

Paradigm Shift in Design…

At the heart of the sound system, the Hi-Tech Director says, is their engineered backend system which is a combination of products from Bose and Biamp processors and call stations to make zone-wise announcements.

Complete system is sitting on the park’s LAN network and can be monitored from multiple locations as desired. The

backend set-up provided thus has shifted the paradigm from traditional system with a centralized processing and central routing matrix into a new future i.e. networked future. Logging and system monitoring information is stored locally.

More, the system is expandable and can be linked to other new facilities coming up on the premises i.e. a world class Club House, a premium mall and a multiplex cinema etc.

Challenges Addressed…

Like every project, Amaazia too posed its own set of challenges, and given its scale, some of them took the design team to test. One of the earliest challenges was about the speaker design to avoid or minimize decibel spill over between zones even as they produce appropriate SPL to overcome noise levels of people and water. It was indeed a potential one.

“We also had challenges with certain proposed location of speakers as interiors changed dynamically at later stages,” recalls Manik, “we had to accommodate those chances to ensure excellent customer experience.”

Choosing the cable routes was another. That the project itself was an outdoor water park install, many services specially plumbing - were being used underground and the install team had to ensure that it didn’t overlap with them.

The Hi-Tech team thus got involved from the very initial stage of civil works on site to ensure it got the conduits laid before the foundation works for Lazy River started.

“Perhaps, the biggest of all, was to live up to the client’s expectation in design, quality and functionality within the budget assigned,” reveals the Hi-Tech Exec. “Client had left the design onto us; so we had a bigger responsibility to ensure that it was done right.”

The Amaazia management is understandably happy with the system design and the experience it weaved around.

“We are extremely glad to be the first one in India to create a world-class integrated amusement park catering to audiences of all ages,” says Rajesh Taylor, Project Director at Amaazia. “We wanted to create a facility of international standard and chose to go with brand Bose for audio systems and a system integrator with expertise and experience to integrate such systems professionally,” he explains, “so we chose Hi-Tech Audio Systems. Virasat-e-Khalsa Comes Alive With DTS And Sholite A static museum goes narrative and dynamic through the medium of Light

Modern Stage Service (MSS) recently designed and executed one of the most recognizable and largest government funded fixed AV and lighting installation in the country - Virasat-e-Khalsa Museum. It is an architectural vision, located in the holy town, Anandpur Sahib, near Chandigarh, the capital of the state of Punjab. This breath-taking museum where light plays the major role is a highly respected, praiseworthy combination of spiritualism, concrete and technology blended to form a rich heritage of the Khalsa’s history and culture of Punjab.

MSS, well known for designing the lighting for theatres, auditoriums, public and private museums across the country has taken a revolutionary step, putting together trendsetting interactive elements and a sophisticated lighting control system to provide visitors a narrative museum, where stories depicting Sikhism come alive.

“Light is the principle vehicle in this museum as we express the story through light,” said Amardeep Behl, Director, ABDH (Amardeep Behl Design Habit) which meant a lot of programming and interaction between computer systems.

To create the historical world that comes alive and make people feel like part of the story, MSS employed DTS

patented technologies, using lighting fixtures featuring LED technology that can control set-ups of DTS LED products in various combinations with DTS DriveNets to power the lights. Sholite’s extremely versatile and bright aerial effects give the galleries unprecedented flexibility required to make the narrative museum dynamic. The MA-Lighting lighting console handles the complex shows efficiently.

In the 65,000 square feet of interior space, there are two complexes at each side of the ravine, connected by the ceremonial bridge. The stories of ‘Panj-Pani’ starts in a boat shape building which has 27 galleries. The 14 galleries were done earlier in phase I and now the phase II is getting introduced to the public consisting of 13 galleries and lighting design by MSS. DTS products have been used in large numbers for lighting up the venue. All of the 27 galleries in their own way uniquely depict the history of Sikhism and how it originated and came into being. Generic effects like Rain, Fire, water, and others have been created by using 2 Generic GOBO Projectors and complemented by 12 Generic- Dome LED Chandeliers. The museum utilizes light effects to explain each bit of information there is, using state-of-the-art equipment and technologies like Holographic projections, Lighting and other effects

combined with 3D mapping techniques completely synced with multiple channels of Audio to display war scenes with the sources so carefully placed that the audience feel like they are standing in the middle of the war for that brief moment.

“We are making a narrative museum, which is very dynamic. Light is the principal vehicle in this museum as we express the story through the medium of light. Here the theme changes from static to dynamic mode and light plays the major role in it” saidVarinder Wadhwa under whose guidance MSS has completed 1300 theatres, auditoriums and public and private museums across the country.

The final total area of 68,000 square feet will rank among the top museums of the world recreating history through artistic representation and craft techniques. The lighting solution is unique staying true to the form and style of the 15th century and later periods in each of the galleries telling the early stories of the Sikhs and the birth of the Khalsa.

By carefully inserting a very savvy technology, emotional impact is emphasized. In the very first gallery, a non-linear experience using art, technology and music has no equal anywhere.

The museum celebrates 500 years of Sikh history and the 300th anniversary of the birth of Khalsa, based on the scriptures written by the tenth and last guru, Guru Gobind Singh, designed by Moshe Safdie. Jaguar F-PACE Defies Gravity In Shanghai Launch Steve Nield delivers a lighting design that features the SGM G-Spot

T

he all new Jaguar F-PACE defied gravity once again on the world's largest Loop the Loop in Shanghai, China, in April. This Guinness World Record-breaking stunt, performed by English stunt driver Terry Grant, was designed to showcase the all-round performance lightweight design, agility and sports car speed - of the brand's first Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV). Both the F-PACE and Grant had to withstand 6.5G to successfully navigate the 360-degree, six-storey loop with a width of only four metres. Driver Terry Grant trained for two months in preparation to make sure he could withstand G-Forces greater than those experienced by space shuttle pilots.

The venue was the Shanghai Passenger Terminal dockside which is used primarily for berthing passenger cruise ships bound for international destinations. The venue remained

a working dock for the first few days of the build so cruise liners came and went and passengers were embarking just a few meters from the edge of thesite. The usable area for the stunt was some 321 meters wide with only a depth of 16 meters, lighting resources were spread out over 221 Meters by 16 Meters. The Passenger terminal is just up the river from the Bund giving it an amazingly central Shanghai location. To make it even better the venue also had an incredible view of the Pudong Skyline which was the backdrop for the whole stunt.

The F-PACE sped through the specially built structure, using its sports car derived technology and world-class collection of safety features to complete the record loop and officially signal the opening of order books worldwide.

and the structure of the loop. However the Shanghai River Authority didn not share his enthusiasm and passion and the idea was quickly rejected. Kelvin Ng of Easy Engineering came up with the idea of placing all the lights in rolling trusses so that lights could be rigged and tested far away from the busy area around the loop structure and then rolled in to place at a suitable time. Four 25m trusses packed full of lights fitted nicely right up against the edge of the dock, squeezing in between large mooring posts that cruise ships normally tie up to.

Months of planning went in to ensuring that both car and driver could complete this world record-breaking challenge. Precise physics, angles, speeds and dimensions were considered by a team of experts including structural engineers, mathematicians and safety experts.

The stunt was the result of a precise mathematical formula, and several months of planning. Grant had to approach the loop at 53mph. When he was going round, the speed dropped as low as 15mph. He had to follow a white line throughout the whole movement to ensure he kept it the right way up in a stunt that lasted just three seconds all in, and saw him pull 6.5G.

Challenges With only a 16m depth to the work area and with most of that being taken up by the loop structure, moving around the loop was hazardous as cherry pickers, scissor lifts and cranes were working simultaneously in a very confined space. Extra precautions were put in place to manage this congestion and during the entire production period not one accident or incident took place.

Weather was an interesting challenge - for the first few days the sun beat down on the crew with many red sunburnt faces as a result. Literally overnight the weather changed and rain soaked the venue and with the wind chill

Lighting Design Concept The lighting was an expansion on a previously completed stunt in Frankfurt some 18 months earlier. The stunt itself would be delayed if there was any rain but once the rain stops and the track has been dried by an army of sweepers and leaf blowers, then the stunt would go ahead. This fundamentally dictated that the lighting resources used for the stunt must be able to take a good downpour and keep going ready to run at a moment’s notice , enter the SGM G-Spot which was the primary fixture for lighting the loops track surface.

The Lighting was broken down in to two main areas, firstly the equipment rigged to the loop structure which was providing the main source of light for the track & car as well as some aerial effects. Secondly, Ground based resources positioned along the dockside behind the loop structure to provide additional lighting to the structure but predominately for creating a statement on the skyline of Shanghai. Initially Steve Nield, the lighting designer had wanted to place all these resources on three barges out on the river to get some distance between the equipment

it was below zero for 3 days. For the rehearsal and show period all involved were blessed with clear skies and cool weather with near perfect conditions for the stunt.

The rigging of the G-spots should have been done when large sections of the loop were assembled at ground level and then craned in to position. Unfortunately because of a delayed shipment of G-spots from Denmark and subsequent customs clearance, each fixture had to be rigged by hand from a cherry picker on the completed structure. This process with two pickers working one on each side of the loop took 18 hours of non-stop work to complete in order to have the lighting ready for programming.

Safety Considerations Safety was paramount with every possible scenario of what could go wrong considered. The stunt was rehearsed over and over with Terry doing a run up but diverting off to a slipway at the last minute, with each run we rehearsed all the protocols for the different possible outcomes. Standing by were two ambulances, two full paramedic teams, two fire boats and a dozen firemen / emergency rescue teams.

The event itself was very intense because the potential of what could go wrong, thankfully all rehearsals and the stunt went perfectly as planned.

The lighting crew that worked on the equipment at the waters edge were required to wear life jackets just in case they fell in the river.

Terry has performed at some of the most prestigious events from the Race of Champions and Formula 1 road shows worldwide.

Mr Grant: the holder of 19 driving world records, the man who’s done more weird, extreme things in cars than anyone else on the planet.

After the stunt was completed and the VIP’s sipped champagne in a nearby ballroom that looked over the venue, there was a request from the client that the lights be changed to green as the event day was indeed St Patrick’s day. This was duly obliged.

Mother Of The Nation Festival

Protec engaged to provide comprehensive and fully integrated technology package

Spread across ten days — and more than a kilometre of Abu Dhabi’s corniche beach — the Mother of the Nation Festival (MOTN) celebrates, commemorates and honours the inspirational values of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak.

Via a number of diverse activity zones, the festival again created an entertaining and highly interactive atmosphere, including educational activities, exhibitions and performance, inviting families and individuals from all walks of life to help preserve the Emirati heritage.

Based on their success in the inaugural year, Protec were again engaged to provide a comprehensive and fully integrated technology package — including rigging, and an array of backline from drum kits to keyboards — under the project management of James Lakin.

Working for Flash Entertainment on the Main Stage, his team faced considerable challenges, not only in reinforcing such a wide performance package, but in mitigating factors outside their control, notably the weather.

Protec provided a projection screen that filled the back of the stage, run in tandem with a pair of Christie Roadster HD 20K-J DLP projectors to deliver graphic content from logos, titles, sponsored video loops and information on what was happening throughout the festival — as well as the Pokémon Orchestra, playing in sync to a video.

Protec’s audio department also fielded an L-Acoustics KARA, a decision justified by James Lakin, who stated: “Although it was a small audience area it still required very good audio quality.”

MOTN expanded to five different zoned areas this year: The Happiness Zone offered exhibits of art and exciting activities, inspired by HH Sheikha Fatima’s commitment to fostering future generations through initiatives in which they may learn and grow. Progress was dedicated to interactive experiences and installations, engaging visitors with innovative concepts. Beach Dining was located throughout the central stretch of the Festival, with the Food & Beverage Zone’s restaurants, food trucks and stalls providing visitors with flavours from the UAE and around the world. Pavilion provided a tribute to the accomplishments of the Mother of the Nation, and a reflection on the enduring legacy of HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak. Finally, bridging international culture with the quintessential urban experience, The Souq offered visitors a traditional retail experience inspired by the rich heritage and cultural exchange.

For the Happiness Zone Protec were engaged by production company HQ Worldwide Shows, and were tasked with providing an array of illumination — uplighting the trees and giant flower sculptures, as well as one of the domes, the arts and crafts area and the Jeep tour. They also provided complementary sound reinforcement.

Main Stage lighting was specified by Flash International and was based largely around Clay Paky Prima Mythos, A.LEDA K20 B-EYE / A.LEDA K10 B-EYE and Prima Super Sharpy — all controlled by grandMA 2 Full Size and grandMA 2 Lite desks.

The only changes from the original spec were that the Clay Paky Scenius Profile, originally assigned for front fillers, were redeployed as the stage floor package, while five Martin Atomic strobes were added to provide extra punch.

Also backing the decision to use KARA was head of audio design, Ed Ross. “Although the weight loading capacity was fairly low we still potentially needed to throw the sound a fair way for the bigger acts if it got busy on the beach,” he explained.

Protec provided a full monitor system and festival stage patch system going to a Digico SD5 for monitors and a Digico SD10 for FOH. “Because of the wide range of acts, we had a vast array of microphones on site and consequently lots of stage multicore cabling to allow flexible change overs,” he added.

Overall, 21 different artists appeared on the Main Stage over the duration of the Festival, each performing twice a day — making a total of 42 performances over the period.

These ranged from a 56-piece orchestra to local jazz and pop bands.

However, the weather provided another unexpected challenge. “There were so many wet days during the set-up and the night before the opening we had wind speeds of 33 metres a second which provided a number of challenges

site wide in the hours before the doors opened to the public,” explained Lakin.

To overcome the conditions they needed to bag all equipment every night and then unbag prior to the show.

“This meant the projectors had to be realigned up every day, giving us only 20 minutes of darkness to do so before the event opened.”

And audio was not spared either. On the morning of the opening day some kit was damaged by water when the covering was ripped off by freak winds. Fortunately they were prepared, and had spares on site.

However, worst hit was the Happiness Zone as all equipment was exposed. Daniel Ivanovski, Protec’s Lighting Engineer, underlined the scale of the challenge in protecting the equipment from the driving rain — which penetrated far inside the roofed stage area — and buffeting winds. “Front of house and dimming/distro area had been covered with tarps held down with stage weights and ropes and the lighting fixtures that weren't under the roof were individually covered with plastic bags every night during the setup and first show days although the weather improved for the festival itself.” The same plastic bag procedure was applied for all lighting fixtures.

Summing up the event, James Lakin said, “All in all the team delivered a seamless show over some fairly difficult and unpredictable days. We managed to deliver on all fronts, which given the size of the site, and challenging weather conditions during the build-up, was no mean feat.” www.productiontec.com

TMB’s Nuri*Lites Hurricane Fixtures Withstand The Weather A fully integrated A/V and lighting package was provided by Production Technology (Protec) of Dubai, whose careful planning and work was challenged before opening day by Mother Nature. Hurricane-force, 75 mph winds, with an accompanying torrential downpour, could have easily delayed the event, had it not been for Protec’s experienced crew and some quality, IP-rated gear, including 100 of the new, tough and resilient Nuri*Lites Hurricane LED fixtures.

“We used Nuri*Lites Hurricanes in the Happiness Zone of the festival, which also happened to be the most exposed area during the storm,” says Protec’s Project Manager, James Lakin. “We chose the Hurricanes because they’re IP65-rated, which was necessary for the open air setup on the beach. The fixtures survived and performed beautifully, with minimal fuss on our part.”

“We purchased Nuri*Lites because we knew TMB would stand behind their product if we had any issues,” explains Lakin. “Also, with such a short delivery timeframe (less than 10 days), we needed to go with a company that we trusted to deliver as promised. In addition to their IP rating, the Hurricane’s cost/value factor influenced our decision. They are performing very well and we intend to increase our stock next season.”

The new Nuri*Lites range from TMB includes seven high-performance LED fixtures that won’t break the bank. RGB, RGBW, RGBAW-UV, and Variable White fixtures are available. Outdoor fixtures include the Hurricane RGBW wash and the Manhattan wash with built-in W-DMX wireless, ideal for illuminating walls and large areas indoors or out.

L-Acoustics Delivers Perfect Coverage For Sing China Final

Rightway Audio Consultants design audio system to ignite the massive audience

H

eld at the Beijing National Stadium, commonly known as the Birds Nest, the final of Sing China’s inaugural season attracted a live audience of over 60,000. Simultaneously broadcast by Zhejiang Television, the production required professional sound that would ignite the massive audience so their energy would translate into a dynamic show. Rightway Audio Consultants Ltd designed an audio system that was up to the Herculean task, utilising a total of 218 L-Acoustics loudspeakers.

Sing China was hosted by superstar Li Hua shao, with renowned artists Jay Chou, Na Ying, Wang Feng and Harlem Yu as coaches and sought to find new vocal talent drawn from public auditions, taking the chosen acts through a series of rounds before announcing Jiang Dunhao of Team Wang Feng the winner.

“We supplied all audio requirements for the two Playoff rounds and the final, which were all mixed by Front of House engineer Jin Shaogang,” explains Vincent Zhou, system designer for L-Acoustics’s Chinese distributor, Rightway Audio. “We have worked with the show’s production team for many years, supplying L-Acoustics for other series and so the show’s audio director, Jin Shaogang

was familiar with L-Acoustics and trusted the system. We were both confident that K1’s power and clarity would provide the right solution for Sing China.”

Having worked at the Birds Nest before, Vincent and the Rightway team were familiar with the venue’s challenging reverb, as well as the obstacle posed by two permanently installed LED screens on the right-hand side of Level 3.

Working in conjunction with Jin Shaogang and L-Acoustics’ applications engineer Alvin Koh, Vincent used Soundvision to design a system that deployed delays to ensure even coverage of the venue, including an asymmetrical flown delay system to account for the LED screens and provide even cover for Levels 2 and 3. This approach meant that Jin Shaogang did not have to drive the system too hard, keeping the volume at a level that accounted for the reverb while ensuring good intelligibility throughout.

The final design comprised 12 K1 plus two K2 left and right for the main hangs, which cover the field, with the top K1 covering a distance of 125m. Two side hangs of 10 K1 plus three K2 were positioned to cover levels 1 and 2 to the side of the stage.

“We used three K2 at the bottom of these arrays because we didn’t want the side hangs to affect the audience on the field, with the K2s at 35 degrees in / 55 degrees out to give us less coverage of the field and therefore provide less interference,” Vincent explains. “We had an additional three stacks of three Kara each for side fill and front fill, to ensure complete coverage.

“We had 16 SB28s each side configured in cardioid,” he says. “When you have a long horizontal array, you get narrow coverage in the horizontal, so we had stacks of just two cabinets to make them lower than the stage. In the horizontal, we had eights stacks of subs. This meant that the horizontal coverage was a little narrow, so we added some delays at the outside of the subs.”

“We also used five ground stacked arrays of four K2, with two stacks either side and one in the middle to cover Level 1 at the rear of the stadium. These were very easy to move if we needed to and, by using K2-Jacks, we were able to make the bottom cabinet of each array an exact angle.

We didn’t fly these delays because the back of Level 1 is shadowed by Level 2, and the flying position was too high to be able to get coverage to the back of Level 1.

“Alvin gave me a lot of suggestions that were really helpful and, because Soundvision is such a powerful tool, I was able to produce a model that was very close to the Birds Nest’s model. The results were perfect and the entire team was very happy.”

“We had nine hangs using a total of 48 K1, 18 K2 and 22 K1-SB cabinets, with four of them at stage left and five stage right to prevent energy going to the screens.”
