Looking to sell your equipment? This may be an odd First words with me touting about the recently launched GearSourceAsia site. Over the many years of publishing the magazine, I have seen many companies finding ways to sell their equipment – some through carousel, e-bay, facebook, word-of-mouth and even email blasts. Now GearSource has launched their Asia platform with a team in Singapore, which should help selling and buying equipment a more seamless experience. There needs to be an eco-system that allows companies to buy and sell equipment. Most of the time the reason to sell is to enable the company to upgrade to new equipment or it may be that the equipment no longer fits the company’s plans. Buyers some time want a short term plan or it could even be companies in developing countries that want the technology but do not have the ability to purchase the equipment brand new, for now.

Here is where a portal like GearSourceAsia comes in handy. GearSourceAsia is part of GearSource LLC, an established platform with a track record of 15 years. With zero cost to register and list your equipment, the site helps sellers reach a global audience. It helps that the the portal is dedicated to our industry, which means those visiting the site are potential buyers as well.

So that is my pitch. Why am I writing this here? I have often been approached both by buyers and sellers for help to buy and sell equipment and here is the solution.

ANSATA & AVID Conclude Live Mixing Masterclass With Robert Scovill
Robert Scovill with delegates
INDIA: ANSATA recently joined hands with AVID to deliver a series of intense live mixing masterclasses in Mumbai and Bangalore, which was conducted by award-winning engineer Robert Scovill. A veteran sound engineer and winner of six TEC Awards as best live mix engineer, Robert Scovill shared some wisdom while addressing live production scenarios. Spanning an illustrious career, Robert has worked with several worldclass performers like Tom Petty, Alice Cooper, Rush, Prince, Matchbox Twenty and Deff Leppard, among others. The masterclasses were conducted in Mumbai on 2 August and Bangalore on 3 August, and had been designed to help participants get the most out of mixing with the AVID Venue S6L system. Referencing a practical demonstration of the VENUE S6L system, Robert delivered a precise overview of the system and shared the workflow that he personally follows while mixing live on the console, as he dwelled on the basic yet important mixing features such as gain staging, how to build show files, create and use custom layouts, use groups to effectively plan a live show, and understand previously unexplored facets of the console. Robert also discussed aspects such as delay compensation in the live world scenario and dealing with latency in digital consoles – both of which form a critical part of live sound mixing, especially for large scale concerts. Additionally, he spoke about using the ‘Universe’ and touchscreen
workflows along with the Venue software while working with the I/O processing channels to mix more efficiently, and went on to share more intricate tricks such as the Abbey Road method to send reverb, New York Compression and more. The sessions in both cities enjoyed a rousing response, clocking approximately 120 attendees in total, with visitor profiles across both cities comprising serious participants from the realm of live sound encompassing aspirants, amateurs and professionals. The two sessions in Mumbai witnessed attendance from audio institutions (students & faculty) for the first, and the second for engineers and seasoned professionals. The session conducted in Bangalore witnessed attendance from a mixture of students, institution faculty members and seasoned engineers and audio professionals. The sessions witnessed attendance from some of the country’s top engineers like Mujeeb Dadarkar, Ashish Saksena, K.J Singh, Lee Braganza, Hozaifa Sayed, Dwayne Das, Bruce Rodericks, Mark Thomas, and Sean Bout; along with noted industry professionals like Felix Remedios, Warren Dsouza, Manish Mavani, Anish Purao etc. who are the head honchos of some of India’s leading sound rental companies. Participants in both cities had a dedicated time slot for Q&A where questions, doubts, ideas and more, were

appropriately addressed by Robert. And needless to say, they were extremely happy to have had the opportunity to personally interact with and learn the nuances of live mixing from a seasoned and decorated engineer like Robert. Engineer Ashish Saksena said: “Every time Mr. Scovill comes down we learn something new and amazing. This time was no different; we had an awesome workshop on mixing workflows and console management for a large number of tracks, and the entire experience was very enlightening to say the least.” Hozaifa Sayed (senior faculty, department of sound at SeamEdu Media School) added: “It is always a pleasure to learn something new, and when it comes from a world renowned and respected engineer like Robert Scovill, the experience is just enhanced to a whole new level. Getting to know the intricate details of the VENUE S6L system and learning the finer nuances of the craft of live mixing
from Robert was enlightening on so many different levels. The way he incorporates real-world examples into his dissertation is absolutely amazing and makes the entire experience of learning so very relatable and memorable.” Robert also praised the attendees for their knowledge, focus, passion and unbridled enthusiasm for live sound and also spoke about how India is now a place for the next crop of talented young mix engineers. He commented: “India is a very fertile ground filled with energy right now with regard to music and concert production. If I contrast this visit to my last visit just a few years ago, the amount of growth in both knowledge and of modern audio concepts and techniques is striking. There is a real and sincere hunger for insights in how the rest of the world works and they are putting that knowledge to use here. I am also thrilled by the amount of VENUE console adoption that has taken place in this region of the world.” ansata.net
AC Lighting Services And Green Hippo Ensure Major Malaysian Awards Take SHAPE MALAYSIA: The Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios was the scenic setting for the TM Group Awards 2017, and AC Lighting Services Malaysia (ACLS) took charge of the prestigious event’s video design and programming. The annual gathering sees up to 2,500 TM Group staff, from across Malaysia, come together to recognise achievements from all divisions in the company. The TM Group is Malaysia’s leading telecommunications company, having launched in 1946 and since evolved to become the country’s largest broadband services provider. ACLS is Malaysia’s Green Hippo dealer as well as a lighting and visual creative. Charged with designing and planning projection coverage for the event, ACLS also handled media server solutions. The team, led by visual programmer Kumar Shan, specified a pair of Hippotizer Karst, a single Hippotizer HD V3, plus a Hippotizer Grasshopper V4. ACLS linked this cocktail of Hippotizer Media Servers, using all eight outputs, to projectors via fibre optics. All the Hippotizer Media Servers were Art-Net controlled by MA2 on PC command and fader wing.
Critical to the success of ACLS’s plan – “vital for this gig”, said Kumar – was SHAPE, Hippotizer’s complete 3D projection mapping tool. Using SHAPE, Kumar and his team controlled three projectors in portrait mode to create a 16802 feet backdrop; two projectors for the stage front façade; a brace of projectors for the shark tooth screen; and a further projector pair for IMAG screens. CD Advertising, with input and approval from TM Group, designed the stage and screen layout, with Framemotion Studio and MMU teaming to create visual design contents. ACLS also worked with Show Gear Production, the Kuala Lumpur-based professional sound, lighting and video technical consultants and suppliers. www.green-hippo.com

Acoustic & Lighting Thailand Launches SSL Live In Thailand
THAILAND: One of the most anticipated events in the Thailand Audio Visual industry took place on 21st June 2017. The moment many in Thailand were waiting for finally arrived as Acoustic & Lighting System ("A&L") officially launched Solid State Logic Live ("SSL Live") in Thailand. Organized by A&L and SSL Asia, the event took place in a luxurious hotel convention hall at Srinakarin, Bangkok. "The Grand Four Wings Convention was the right place to launch the SSL event," commented Veera Lee, A&L Thailand Branch Manager. "The event was definitely successful, as many key industry players were present at the event," continued Veera. The spotlight for the event was the 2 units of SSL Live L500 that were on display in the event. These 2 units garnered a huge interest among the audience present at the event. "It is an eye opener for me to witness not one unit but two
units of SSL Live L500. In the sound industry we often hear the quality and performance of the SSL Live L500 sound console but I never actually experienced the performance until today. It definitely lived up to its name as a digital sound console that is easy to configure," commented one of the guest. The SSL L500 consist of multiple faders and utilities. The multi-touch screen allows sound engineers to freely control sound in their preferred setting. "Digital workflow with a sense of analogue control," commented another. "It will be a game changer in the Thailand audio visual industry," commented Veera. "When we heard that SSL Asia will be officially launching their product in Thailand, it was an exciting news for us. A&L Thailand is more than willing to provide our services to expand the SSL Asia market. Thailand has the potential as we see more and more events and concerts being held in this region," continued Veera.

Rental company SMILE Light & Sound System known for providing excellent services was given the opportunity to set up the venue together with A&L Thailand. Having such amazing sound console system, it is only reasonable to provide the best sound output for the audience to experience. "For an event such as this, there is no doubt that the RCF speakers should be used," commented one of the sound technician on duty during the setup. A total of 8 units of RCF speakers were use throughout the event. 2 units of RCF TTL6-A were used as the main speakers while another 2 units of RCF TTS56A for the subwoofers. These were more than enough to cover the event area. In addition to the 4 speakers, 4 units of RCF ST15-SMA were used for the stage monitoring. For the audience to better experience the performance and the quality SSL Live L500 has, A&L Thailand hired local bands to perform for the audience. "It allowed us to try out the SSL Live L500 in a live setting," responded an audience. As for the lighting console, Avolites Titan Mobile and Titan Mobile Wing were used. Throughout the event, guests were offered hands on experience with SSL trainers. They were given the
opportunity to experience the console for themselves. "I felt these hands-on experience is a plus to the event. I am satisfied that I was able to have a basic understanding on how the SSL Live L500 operates," commented a guest. "I think the event was very successful, we had a number of key players and key companies that were present in the event. We also saw a large interest in the Live series. Everyone did a great job," commented Malcolm Chan, General Manager for SSL Asia. "As for SSL Asia marketing in Thailand, I would say our marketing efforts will be constant and will be in line with our entire outlook for South East Asia. We will be keeping the region up to date with Live products. Recently in 2015 we did something for Singapore; we brought in a FOH Simon Thomas who did the FOH mixing for Sam Smith. Continuing the strategy we will constantly promote SSL Live as a whole as one of our key marketing strategies," continued Malcolm. "One of our products we would like to highlight is the Dante Stage Box. It was a slight pity that we could not showcase that product here due to the huge demand for it hence a shortage of stock. It would be a game changer because of the new Dante compatibility and capability of this stage box. This new box will bring versatility to the industry be it in the rental market or fixed installation as this new stage box allows the live console to work with other manufacturer's consoles without reducing the sound quality," commented Malcolm. "Moving forward, we will work closely with SSL Asia in expanding the SSL market in Thailand as well as coming up with great marketing strategies and awareness campaigns to educate the AV industry on the importance of digital sound console in various installations," ended Veera. www.acousticlighting.com

Laser Components BWA-MON Allows For OnSite Monitoring
Slight changes in the beam profile of high-power laser systems can cause severe consequences. The Beam Waist Analyser Monitor (BWA-MON) by Haas Laser Technologies provides users with continuous real-time data covering the entire laser beam profile. Mistakes are detected as they happen and can be fixed before damage occurs. The BWA-MON is the only monitoring system without any moving parts, and uses an identical reflection of the actual beam to determine characteristics like beam waist and size, M-squared or thermal lensing. Working at 50Hz, the system allows for several measurements per second. Thanks to its modular build, the BWA-MON can easily be adapted to the needs of any specific application. Martin Audio Introduces New Loudspeaker Range; User Guides Martin Audio has announced the discontinuation of their original LE Monitor Series (LE1200S, LE1500S and LE2100S) – this comes after the introduction of the new LE Series Stage Monitors, the LE100 and LE200, which produce a near-rectangular coverage pattern over a listening plane at head-height, and a wide horizontal coverage close to the monitor that gradually reduces as distance increases to maintain consistent SPL and tonal balance. The company has also introduced the new SX Subwoofers, the SX118 compact subwoofer and SX218 dual-driver subwoofer. Because of this, the WS218X and WS18X have been discontinued. Martin Audio is also streamlining their range of wall brackets so that there will be only one model for almost all products – orders will continue to be fulfilled with the current brackets (unless otherwise specified by customers)
until stock is consumed. A guide for deployment of these brackets may be found here. Updated loudspeaker parameter information, including for the new LE Series and SX Subwoofers, is now available here. APG Wires South Korea’s Jeju Theatre For Sound APG loudspeakers installed add to audience immersion for popular comedy show
Nanta shows, the traditional samul nori music is performed with improvised instruments such as cutting boards, water canisters and kitchen knives, so sound is at the very heart of this hugely popular musical”, commented Sangwoo Do, CEO of Soundplace. “PMC Production wanted to immerse the audience in the show in order to rejuvenate the experience.”

s Korea’s largest island, Jeju has been the country’s favourite domestic holiday destination for years thanks to its beautiful beaches, luxurious countryside… and its theatre for Nanta, a hugely popular South Korean non-verbal comedy show incorporating traditional percussion. Now visitors to Jeju Theatre can enjoy the show even more, thanks to world-class acoustics delivered by a range of APG loudspeakers. Nanta premiered in Seoul in 1997 and has since been staged in 18 countries including in Broadway. Run by PMC Production, the show is also performed daily in four Seoul theatres, making it the longest-running show in Korean history. Built for Nanta performances exclusively, the 659seat Jeju Theatre has welcomed over one million visitors since its opening in 2008 and was due for an audio upgrade to provide the best sonic experience to its audience. The musical has a simple back story of three cooks attempting to finish preparing a wedding banquet within a strict time limit while the manager installs his incompetent nephew among the kitchen staff. The show involves acrobatics, magic tricks, comedy, pantomime and audience participation. Korean integrator Soundplace was appointed to refurbish the theatre with pristine audio. Multipurpose DX15 coaxial speakers cover as infill on each side of the stage, while a further two ultra-compact MX0 coaxial loudspeakers reinforce first ranks as front fills. Grégory Dapsanse, marketing & business development director at APG, praised the quality of the integration: “Soundplace successfully achieved an efficient sound design and great tuning despite a big challenge: in such a mid-size venue, the system has to be compact and discrete while providing enough SLP with large headroom to reflect the huge dynamic range from the percussions. Because of the nearby walls, the Uniline directivity control was critical to avoid reflections and ensure high intelligibility and sonic precision all the way to the last row.” “We have been working with APG since 2014 and we have always been impressed by the capacity of their speakers to reproduce a ‘pure’ sound that truly represents the vocals and instruments. The Uniline range is particularly interesting as it provides great sound control within a compact size”, concluded Sangwoo Do. www.apg.audio

Symetrix Prism At The Heart Of Bangkok’s YG Republique Symetrix Prism DSP links all zones of the multi-zone, multi-venue complex
T
he latest addition to Bangkok's vibrant network of eateries and nightclubs, YG Republique offers visitors the opportunity to eat, drink, and dance in the heart of the city's nightlife district. Opened by Asian entertainment giant YG Entertainment Inc., YG Republique is a multi-floor, multivenue complex, incorporating multiple distinct spaces including a restaurant, lounge, bar, and nightclub, all linked by a Symetrix Prism 16x16 DSP to ensure seamless and simple processing and distribution from one zone to the next. With interests in music, event management, music publishing and more, YG Entertainment Inc. recently marked its 20th anniversary. It also has a substantial footprint in venues, including YG Republique's unique injection of Korean culture into the Thai capital. Needless to say, only the best was good enough for the venue's audio technology, and YG Entertainment engaged leading audio video integrator Fuzion Far East, led by Product Specialist & Project Manager Benjamin Walters. Flexibility of audio processing and distribution was a crucial consideration, says Walters. "It was imperative that music from any venue can be sent to any other venue," he offers. "This applies not just to background music, but also to the DJ and live band sets taking place in YG Republique's club and pub areas." Walters and his team designed a powerful and comprehensive Dante-based audio network utilizing audio processing and management via a single Symetrix Prism 16x16 processor. The Prism's 128 (64x64) channel capability is augmented by a Symetrix xOut 12 Dante
expander for additional output capacity. Five Attero Tech unDX2IO Dante interface wall boxes handle inputs and outputs throughout the YG Republique complex, while ARC controllers provide easy and intuitive end-user operation. Quest loudspeakers and amplifiers are installed throughout the complex. "Simply put, the Prism 16x16 and the xOut 12 Dante expander provide the quality and the number of outputs we required, and at a great price point," says Walters. "With Symetrix ARC controllers installed on each floor, there is also a great flexibility of control over volume and other key settings." Walters reports a positive response to the overall system after the opening weekend. "The audio is of the highest quality and is flexibly processed and managed throughout and of course the Prism is fundamental to achieving that." www.symetrix.co

hen Light Architects Cochavi & Klein were engaged by "The Tripping" production group to create spectacularly different lighting for a special sunset party in the Gan Haslaim (Rock Garden) of Tel Aviv’s famous Yarkon Park, they came up with the concept of a giant “Electronic Sun” positioned 20m high in the air behind the elevated DJ and VIP areas. Based around a 3-ring circular truss, this huge 8 meters diameter backlight structure carried 48 of Robe’s 19-segment Spiider LED fixtures together with 24 of Robe’s fast, ultra-narrow Pointe fixtures, and two dozen 4-light mole-fays. The entire structure was suspended at a pretilted angle from a 66m mobile crane. The party started at noon, taking thousands of party lovers on a journey through the sunset and into the night. The DJ booth was located in front of the rocky hill, with a beautiful
back scenery full of ancient stones. At 20:00 when the sun went down completely, the Electronic Sun then rose behind the hill. The Spiiders were run in their 122-channel extended mode, enabling pixel mapping through an MA VPU media server as well as the creation of complex and subtle effects and patterns. This was combined with output from eight fog machines resulting in dynamic, varied and visually exciting lighting and effects. Lighting was controlled using a grandMA2 system and was programmed by Omer Israeli, associate lighting designer and programmer at Cochavi & Klein. Additional project credits include Dor Aichner, lighting crew chief and Itay Harpaz, stage manager. Itamar Bar Shavit was the technical producer of the event. JMY Sound And Light Celebrates India With CHAUVET Professional
CHAUVET Professional sets the mood to celebrate Independence Day in India
performance. He also relied on the Rogue’s split-colour capabilities and dual colour wheels with seven colours to cover the stage and crowd in a rainbow of hues.
A
ugust 15 is India's Independence Day, and holds a special meaning for the people of Lenasia Township, as the location where a young Mahatma Gandhi staged a famous protest in the early 20th century to advance the cause of civil rights for South Africa’s Indian population. Later, when he returned to India, Gandhi would employ the idea of non-violent civil disobedience that he had honed in South Africa to win independence for his native country, and in the process, change the world. This year, as India celebrated the 70th anniversary of its independence, Lenasia hosted an array of events to mark the occasion. Among the most moving and colourful was “Celebrating India” at the township’s Patidar Hall, which featured a performance by the Kashvita Music and Dance Academy. Creating a bright and upbeat background for the spirited performances on stage was a vivid Vikash Maharajdesigned lightshow that featured CHAUVET Professional Rogue R2 Spots supplied by JMY Sound and Lighting. Maharaj arranged six of the 240W moving LED spots across the upstage deck. Drawing on their 16.5-degree beam angle and intense output, he used them to create dynamic aerial effects that energized the Independence Day celebrations and accented key moments in the
“Colour is very important to the overall mood of this event,” said Vishal Nana, president of JMY Sound and Light. “We specified the Rogues because of their ability to create a multitude of colours. Their split colour beam was also a factor. This feature and the Rogue’s gobo capabilities helped Vikash create a wide variety of looks for the program, not only during its dances but during various presentations.” In addition to lighting the performers and crowd, the Rogues were used to accent the stage backdrop and other scenic elements that reflected Indian art and culture. “They are very versatile fixtures,” said Nana. “When Vikash directed them straight up, they created stunning patterns on the venue ceiling. At other times, he had them shoot out towards both sides of the stage to create a fan effect.” Being LED fixtures, the Rogues also kept temperatures comfortable on stage for the event’s performers, many of whom were young children. The enthusiasm of these young people bathed in colourful light served as a beautiful reminder to all in attendance, that Mahatma Gandhi’s struggle has indeed made the world a better place. www.chauvetprofessional.com

HARMAN Professional Solutions Offers Premium Sound For “Most Memorable Is Hangzhou” Public Performances
Acclaimed performance from the G20 Hangzhou Summit deploys cutting-edge audio solutions by JBL, Soundcraft, Crown and BSS for its highly anticipated public debut
I
mpression Wonders Arts Development Co., Ltd. recently deployed a complete HARMAN Professional Solutions audio system for the public debut of “Most Memorable Is Hangzhou.” Staged with Hangzhou’s famous West Lake in the background, “Most Memorable Is Hangzhou” was originally created to welcome visitors to the opening gala of the 2016 G20 Hangzhou Summit. The G20 performance became an international sensation and even received praise from Chinese President Xi Jinping for its innovative visuals, breathtaking stage design and stunning musical performances. Thanks to strong interest from the public, Impression Wonders Arts Development and director Zhang Yimou created a new version of “Most Memorable is Hangzhou” with enhanced visuals, interactive effects and an updated audio system design by Mr. Jin Shaogang, a legend in the Chinese audio industry.
The production presented several unique challenges. The seating capacity for the public performance increased from 1,200 to 2,000 with the addition of 800 retractable seats. Additionally, the seating was distributed sporadically throughout the venue, making it difficult to achieve consistent audio coverage. Furthermore, the audio system was deployed on the water in two boats, so it needed to withstand the elements. Shaogang selected JBL VTX Series speakers, JBL AE Series speakers and JBL EON Series speakers to deliver a premium audio experience that would match the show’s stunning visuals. The entire system was powered by Crown I-Tech HD Series amplifiers, and mixed using Soundcraft Vi Series digital mixing consoles and BSS digital audio processors. HARMAN distributor ACE provided the audio solutions. harman.com

The TENG Ensemble Transforms Their Live Sound with DPA Microphones
The TENG Ensemble’s performance heightened by usage of DPA microphones at Fullerton Hotel
T
he clarity and fidelity of DPA microphones helped The TENG Ensemble to deliver a stunning live performance at the iconic Fullerton Hotel Singapore. Entitled Where the River Always Flows, this debut outdoor performance transformed the Fullerton Hotel Singapore’s East Garden Square an extravaganza filled with the nostalgic sounds of Singapore’s heritage music. DPA d:vote Instrument Microphones were used to amplify a combination of western and Chinese instruments that were played during the performance. These included a cello, a Sheng and a Guzheng. Audio engineer Steve Zhang also specified a DPA d:facto Vocal Microphone for the Ensemble’s renowned countertenor Phua Ee Kia. Commenting on his choice of microphones, Zhang says: “Phua Ee Kia has a uniquely expressive and dynamic voice, therefore the d:facto Vocal Microphone’s high SPL handling and wide dynamic range ensured that his performance was not constrained by technical limitations, even in the slightest. “For the instruments, the impressive clarity of the d:vote Instrument Microphone was a major advantage – as was its flexibility. This minuscule gooseneck mic can be mounted conveniently on top of clips that come in various shapes and sizes. Even for an instrument as unconventional as the Sheng, the d:vote 4099 manages to provide a solution that allows fluid on-stage movement of the musician, so that he is able to fully express his artistry.” Established in 2004, The TENG Ensemble is a collective of music educators, scholars and award-winning instrumentalists who create and develop projects in Chinese
instrumental music. The TENG Ensemble performances fuse traditional and contemporary influences to create a sound that is current, visionary and guided by Asian aesthetics. The TENG Ensemble’s works highlight the significance of Singapore’s songs and places in shaping the Singaporean sensibility of today. By revisiting heritage songs and presenting them in a contemporary way, the ensemble also aims to spark interest in the history of South-east Asian music and its place in the modern world. For the Fullerton Square performance, the TENG Ensemble were joined by accordionist Syafiqah ‘Adha and 2016 Noise Singapore alumni, Mars. The concert featured a new set of Singapore-inspired works including songs by P Ramlee and Zubir Said and a mash up of Rasa Sayang and Di Tanjong Katong. They also performed two East-West pieces specially commissioned by The Fullerton Heritage. A video of the performance may be viewed HERE. www.dpamicrophones.com

he fourth edition of the Good Vibes Festival was recently held at The Ranch @ Gohtong Jaya in Genting Highlands – featuring artists such as Pheonix, Dua Lipa, G-Eazy, Kodaline and The Kooks, the two-day music festival drew a crowd of approximately 15,000 despite the rain.

Highlights included the Void Acoustics’ Air Motion and Stasys Xair brought in from the UK for the front-of-house, and Void Airten V2 and Venu 115 used for DJ monitors – these new solutions were brought in specially for the festival.
Having been involved in the festival ever since its inception in 2013, Digital Aid once again provided the necessary equipment for the festival’s main stages (RED and BLUE), as well as the Electric Field and Heineken Star Club areas. They also worked closely with Retina Production, a professional visual company.
One reason why the respective solutions were used for the Good Vibes Festival was due to past experience, as Digital Aid had used the same solutions at this same event for a previous Good Vibes Festival. Although the music festival and setup faced minor challenges such as gloomy weather for the duration of the festival, Digital Aid remains confident that their clients were thoroughly satisfied.
The main stage used equipment from L-Acoustics, Clay Paky, ROBE and Martin Professional. The Electric Field used equipment from d&b audiotechnik, Clay Paky and

Martin Audio XE500 Unveiled At “Rock In Japan” Festival
New XE500 floor monitors join hands with new iK42 amplifier for electric experience Not only Tomo, but many other musicians and sound engineers expressed their surprise at the quality of this monitor during the festival. In fact the XE500 combines enormous output capability with exceptional sonic performance, coverage control and consistency. From a touring perspective, the drivers feature powerful neodymium magnet structures, both to maximise performance and reduce weight.
“Rock In Japan” is one of the biggest open-air events of its kind in the country, and is held on four days over two consecutive weekends in August. Martin Audio Japan has deployed its MLA speakers for this event for many years, and once again they covered the main Grass Stage with their equipment for the 2017 edition. While this again included the MLA series, all attention was focused on the new XE500 floor monitors along the front edge of the stage, seen for the first time in Japan and Asia Pacific. Powered by an equally new Martin Audio iK42 amplifier it made an outstanding debut on the main stage. As monitor engineer, Tomo Nishigawa who mixed rock band, Dragon Ash on the opening day, commented, “When I tried it before the show, I felt it was really suitable for a female singer with a whispered voice. We went in without any rehearsal onstage but the monitors caused great excitement. In fact after the show, the band musicians described the experience as ‘really superb!’ The XE500 monitor could reference the sound so clearly that each of the musicians could define whether the sound was coming from the monitor or the DJ set during the show. We have never experienced such a faithful reproduction before,” he added.
There were seven stages at the event in total, and Martin Audio products featured on four of them: On the Grass Stage, the PA was made up of main hangs of 22 MLA elements on each of the two main hangs, with 18 MLA outfills each side. A further eight MLA were deployed on the right side only as the park layout is non-symmetrical. Martin Audio products also featured on the Lake Stage, with main PA hangs of 12 MLA on each side, and 12 mono MLX subwoofers installed in front of the stage. Meanwhile, Park Stage and Forest Stage each saw 10 MLA elements hung on each wing, with complementary sub arrays, the former also with 10 MLA Compact. Following the festival, Martin Audio Japan said it was anticipating high demand, as it delivers the first batch of XE500s to its Japanese clients. martin-audio.com

Avid Venue Console Takes Centre Stage
The rental company talks touring with the 40-year-old band

W
ith a career spanning 40 years, iconic Australian band Icehouse has influenced millions with their music, and are well-known and loved by audiences across generations. To the delight of many, the band has just announced more dates for their 40 Years Live Tour, especially since all their tickets are currently sold out. Touring with an audio package from JPJ Audio, the tour utilised in-house PA systems where available with JPJ supplying speaker systems when required. FOH Engineer Richie Robinson, who has mixed for the band since their return to live shows in 2011, used an Avid Venue S6L, saying it is one of the best mixing consoles on the market. “I had used an Avid Profile since 2007 and always loved working on it,” he remarked. “However, it got to a stage where I thought ‘well that’s the sound of it’ and decided
to try some other consoles that had better preamps and a more open sound stage. While I usually liked the sound of them, I didn’t fall in love with their operating systems as much as I did with the Avid Venue gear. When the Venue S6L came along and I tried it out, I was blown away with how good it sounded. It’s a real win for Avid and I think you’re going to see a lot more of them.” When Richie used to mix Icehouse on an Avid Profile, he implemented a combination of Waves plug-ins and outboard reverbs but he’s been happy with the way the onboard fx plugins sound with the new console. “With the combination of the new audio engine in the console running at 96khz and the plug-ins running on the AAX DSP cards, even the Avid reverbs sound a whole lot better to me,” added Richie. “I’ve gone back to using the

ReVibe reverb which sounds really good and other than that, I bought a few 3rd party plugins for some other eq, compression and saturation flavours. I miss some of my Waves plug-ins but it’s been cathartic to ditch what you’ve been using for so long and just go ‘wow, that sounds so good just straight out of the console!” One 3rd party plug-in that Richie has used often with Icehouse is the Brainworx bx-console channel strip by Plugin Alliance which he implements over many channels. “There’s a subtle character thing going on with that plug-in that suited this band” said Richie. Richie uses the Snapshot and Layout features on the console for all the songs, mainly for turning on and off required input channels and for keeping the top fader layer populated with the key input elements for each song. He also found that snapshotting the effects on the Venue S6L was a very handy tool. As Iva Davies wrote and produced so many of Icehouse’s tunes, he can be quite specific with the echoes and delays used on the original recorded versions so Richie decided to snapshot all of the echo effects. That way he doesn’t have to worry about adding the correct tap tempo to each song - when he recalls
the snapshot to the next song all of the stored effect parameters are recalled. Microphones were fairly standard with a selection of Shure wired and radio microphones, a couple of AKG414’s for drum overheads plus Sennheiser and Audio-Technica Australia microphones. “We have a Shure KSM9 for when Iva plays an oboe in Man of Colours and that’s probably the funkiest mic we have.” said Richie. “We’ve tried a few different mics on it but that’s the one we kept coming back to.” Onstage, the band are all on Shure PSM1000 IEM’s with most of them using the Shure SE846 ear buds. In addition, Iva has a couple of d&b audiotechnik M4 wedges in front of him as he occasionally removes one of his IEMs. Sidefills are L-Acoustics Arcs with dv-Subs and the drum sub is a pair of d&b Q-subs. Monitor Engineers for the tour were Paul Kennedy (now out with Midnight Oil) and Matt Debien who both used a Yamaha PM5D with an Apogee Big Ben word clock. www.jpjaudio.com.au
