Will This Be The New Norm? The Roskilde Festival Group and Meyer Sound have announced a unique partnership that will leverage the strengths of northern Europe’s largest continuing music festival and a world-leading supplier of professional audio systems. Beginning with the 2018 event, all stages at the Roskilde Festival will deploy reinforcement systems from Meyer Sound exclusively. In addition, Meyer Sound will assist in training the festival’s own technical staff in audio system design, configuration and optimization. The partners also outlined ambitious proposals for audience education and interactive participation, as well as the formation of a new Roskilde Festival Academy for high-level training throughout the year. This is an interesting proposition. I am not sure if there is any precedence with such arrangements. Concerts have riders which at times are flexible depending on the country hosting the concert. Music festivals too have their preference in terms of equipment but are also flexible if an equally renowned brand is proposed. The above arrangement actually ties in a particular solution to the festival for the long term. In addition the festival organisers have now committed to hiring and training their own technical staff. Should other festivals follow the lead, we wonder what will be the impact on the rental and staging industry? Thomas Richard Prakasam Publisher/Editorial Director thomas@spinworkz.com

Robe Launches New MegaPointe Worldwide GLOBAL: Robe has gone Mega with the global launch of the MegaPointe, its new multi-functional moving light fixture – the new “reference point” and landmark product was unveiled worldwide following a series of intriguing teaser videos that generated curiosity and excitement in the lighting and visual communities.
The zoom ranges from 1.8 to 21 degrees in Beam mode, and goes from 3 to 42 degrees in Spot mode with a total lumen output of 20.375 and CRI of over 80. The new Effects Engine allows users to create inventive in-air projections – pre-loaded with 12 beam and flower effects, the engine can be further finessed using the beam shaper which can emulate framing shutter effects and create rectangular shapes. It is also rotatable and indexable. There is a static 14-slot plus open gobo wheel fitted with glass gobos for precision surface projections and exciting in-air impressions, and a second wheel contains 9 rotating, indexable and replaceable gobos. These can be combined with a variable speed, bi-directional animation wheel which can be used in conjunction with any of the gobos or on its own to enhance or produce exceptionally subtle and detailed effects and projections.
Robe’s International Sales Director Harry von den Stemmen speaks during the Singapore launch of the MegaPointe.
The launch of the MegaPointe in Singapore attracted many lighting and visual professionals, with a turnout of over 40 people gathered to learn more about the fixture.
A remote adjustable hot-spot control can further influence the appearance of the lightsource, and comes with a series of pre-programmable ‘random’ strobe and pulse effects. The MegaPointe weighs only 22kg, and is suited for live events, festivals, TV productions and permanent installations. www.robe.cz
Utilising an exclusive 470W short-arc lightsource, the MegaPointe optics produce phenomenally bright parallel beams, spot gobo projections, super-quick movement, smooth CMY colour mixing and a multitude of effects available for splitting and shaping the light in Spot, Beam or Wash modes.

Yale-NUS College Performance Hall & Blackbox Theatre Invests In JB Lighting extremely quiet. It has a good output for a low 270w power consumption fixture. The output matches that of a traditional 800w lamp based moving light spot and the CMY color mixing gives us all the colors we need. The fixtures are easy to maintain due to their modular design. This is truly an ideal multifunction moving fixture for small and big stages”. SINGAPORE: Yale-NUS College is a liberal arts college in Singapore. Established in 2011 as a collaboration between Yale University and the National University of Singapore, it is the first liberal arts college in Singapore and one of the few in Asia. Yale-NUS inaugurated its campus located at 16 College Avenue in October 2015. Within the campus under the Arts department is a state of the art 339 seater Performance Hall and Blackbox Theatre with capacity to hold 185 pax. Md Shafei Seri, Senior Technical Manager for the Arts department was tasked to seek an energy efficient LED based moving spots and wash lights to enhance their existing lighting inventory. “Our campus is committed to the Go-Green initiatives to improve energy efficiency and this translates to our choice of lighting equipment which traditionally are very high energy consuming products. We needed a low energy consumption yet high performance LED base product that does not sacrifice the quality of light output crucial for our shows. We also needed low noise products that suit the Performance Hall environment”. After several months of evaluation and demos of numerous proposals from various suppliers, Shafei finally decided to order 25 pieces of JB Lighting Varyscan P7 CMY LED Moving Spots and 30 pieces of JB Lighting A8 LED Moving Wash. Shafei commented:” We needed fixtures that are lightweight and compact sized. The JB Varyscan P7 CMY weighs only at 16kg. It has a good zoom and runs
With the Spots sorted, Shafei turned to the Washes. “I find the JB A8 fits our needs well. . The College wanted and has gotten a bright, compact sized wash with good colour mixing, they have a great zoom range to cover the stage area and it is virtually silent. Shafei also added that other than the JB Varyscan P7 CMY and A8 product capabilities, a firm reason for choosing the JB fixtures was due to the fact that JB Lighting is distributed by Total Solution Marketing Pte Ltd (TSM). “We studied our options and strongly considered the level of after sales service available for all our product purchases. Many of the existing lighting and rigging equipment in our venues are brands distributed by TSM. We knew from past experience that we can always depend on timely, and reliable technical support from the guys at TSM”. Glenn Wong, Managing Director of TSM concluded:” we are thrilled and honored that Yale-NUS College has chosen to trust and invest in JB Lighting. This re-affirms our belief to represent top quality brand products and continuing to offer the best customer service to all of our customers. We are also delighted that Yale-NUS College is the first client in South East Asia to invest in the award winning JB Lighting Varyscan P7 CMY Spots. The JB Varyscan P7 CMY was awarded as best light product in the highly acclaimed 2017 Prolight+Sound International Press Awards (pipa). www.tsm-int.com

Mediakraft Gets Its Wireless Audio Edge With Sennheiser Microphones And In-Ear Monitors
UAE: Mediakraft has extended its capabilities in wireless audio with the addition of Sennheiser's 2000 series wireless microphones and in-ear monitors (IEMs) to its product portfolio. With this, the Dubai-based rental company is prepared to better serve the growing high-quality audio requirements of stage shows and live concerts, corporate events, TV productions and gala functions across the Emirates.
Middle East, followed by product demonstrations and support from Venuetech, the rental company selected Sennheiser’s 2000 series systems. At the heart of Mediakraft’s new setup is a rack of EM 2050 true diversity twin receivers for the SKM 2000 handheld wireless transmitters with MMD 935 capsules, and a rack of SR 2050 twin transmitters for the EK 2000 IEM wireless monitoring receivers.
“The decision to enhance our rental offerings with the Sennheiser solutions was entirely driven by the demands of our customers,” explained Santhosh Narayanan of Mediakraft. “The events we cater to are of international scale and caliber and all things being equal, audio can be the difference between the success or failure of the entire event. While our customers are not concerned with the technical details, the two essential features they are concerned with are quality and reliability.”
Commenting on the quality of the systems, Santhosh Narayanan said, “The RF signals are both strong and stable, delivering reliable high-quality connections. Artists and customers who have already used these systems have consistently lauded the crystal-clear audio quality made possible by the dynamic range and frequency response of the 935 capsules.”
A long-time user of Sennheiser’s wired audio solutions, Mediakraft was guided to invest in wireless solutions by Venuetech, Sennheiser’s long standing pro audio distribution partner in the UAE. After receiving technical information and orientation on Sennheiser solutions at industry trade shows Infocomm MEA andProlight + Sound
Mediakraft has already seen high demand for the new system which has been successfully utilized by several artists for their performances in Dubai. These include Sonu Nigam, Arabic artist Cheb Khaled, and a host of Indian bands at The Great Mela concert held at the Dubai Media City Amphitheatre this year. www.sennheiser.com

ADJ Pocket Pro: Pocket-Sized Moving Head Offers Pro Features ADJ has introduced its next generation affordable and compact moving head, the Pocket Pro. Offering all the same features as ithe Inno Pocket Spot, this new fixture adds the flexibility of replaceable GOBOs, 4 additional GOBOs, a powerCON input and also offers brighter output, but without an increase in retail price. Powered by a 25W white-light LED, the new Pocket Pro produces a vibrant beam which is equally suited to creating mid-air effects as it is to projecting GOBO patterns onto walls, ceilings, dance floors, and stages. The fixture has a 15-degree beam angle and is fitted with a manuallyadjustable lens which can be used to alter the focus of the beam to suit different projection distances. Independent colour and GOBO wheels provide users with complete creative control over the unit’s output. The colour wheel is loaded with seven vibrant options – red, orange, yellow, green, UV Purple, Blue, and Pink – plus open white. Meanwhile the separate GOBO wheel features seven slots filled with detailed metal GOBOs, some of which are ideal for pattern projection while others are suited to generating mid-air beams. Further adding to the flexibility of the Pocket Pro, each of the GOBO patterns is also replaceable. The unit’s casing has a hinged design which means that the top cover can easily be removed to provide access to the GOBO wheel. Individual GOBOs then simply slide out, allowing alternative patterns and custom GOBOs to be inserted in their place. Power input and output sockets – in the form of IEC connections – are located on the base of the unit and can be used to connect together multiple fixtures for charging, or for mains-powered operation if Element Series uplighters are required for more than 11 hours of continuous use. XLR input and output sockets are also included to allow the fixtures to be used as part of a traditional cabled DMX system should a WiFLY controller or transceiver not be available. The Pocket Pro is able to shoot through its wide 540-degree pan and 230-degree tilt angles at speed, and is also capable of smooth slow sweeps and precisely positioned
static projections. The unit’s expansive feature set is completed by 0-100% digital dimming – with five selectable curves (Standard, Stage, TV, Architectural & Theatre), GOBO shake, variable speed digital strobing, and random slow to fast pulse effects. The fixture offers a choice of three operating modes: DMX, Sound Active, and Internal Show. It is supplied pre-programmed with four built-in lightshows, which means that it can be used without the need for a separate controller or any programming skills. Multiple fixtures can also be linked using XLR cables for Master/Slave operation while extra interest can be added to a multi-head system by using the Pan or Tilt Inversion modes to cause some heads to move in the opposite direction to others when linked together. Measuring 6.37” x 7.87” x 11.30” / 162 x 200 x 287mm (L x W x H) the fixture is ideal for installation in venues with low ceilings and also for use by mobile entertainers and DJs who have limited transportation and storage space. Despite its robust build quality the fan-cooled fixture is also lightweight at just 7.3 lbs. / 3.6 kgs. The versatile fixture is fitted with rubber feet and also supplied with a removable Omega bracket meaning that it can be placed directly onto a stage/riser or rigged to a truss or podium. The Pocket Pro is now available from ADJ USA and ADJ Europe. www.adj.com

EAW Expands RADIUS Series With RSX218 Subwoofer
Eastern Acoustic Works (EAW) has announced the debut of the RSX218, a dual 18-inch subwoofer that has joined the RADIUS family of loudspeakers. Like other RADIUS loudspeakers, the RSX218 is designed for both portable and permanent installation applications. RADIUS is a comprehensive family of loudspeakers that includes 8-inch and 12-inch 2-way point source loudspeakers available in 2 horn patterns, a double 8-inch articulated line array, a single 12-inch coaxial stage monitor and single 12-inch, 18-inch and now dual 18-inch subwoofer models. The powered subwoofer features EAW’s signature acoustical design and technologies like EAW Focusing and DynO while integrating Dante networking and iOS-based prediction, control and monitoring via EAWmosiac. Convenient pushbutton cardioid operation provides directivity to reduce excess low-frequency energy on stage. With half space peak output of 141 dB, the RSX218 provides 7dB more output than the single-18 RSX18 but in a very compact footprint, which translates into less equipment for larger shows, saving companies on cost and truck space.
At the heart of the entire RADIUS family, including the RSX218, is the EAWmosaic iOS-based application. This completely integrated and intuitive platform provides prediction, control and monitoring at any location in the venue wirelessly. The power of EAW RADIUS and EAWmosaic deliver spectacular audio results easier and faster than ever before. Like the rest of the RADIUS family, the RSX218 features a large, highly-legible navigation screen that provides on-box access to all RADIUS functions using a simple turn and push encoder. Dual locking etherCON connectors provide simple daisy-chain Dante connectivity for single cable audio and communications. There is also an integrated WAP connection on every RADIUS loudspeaker to provide flexible router placement options. Luminex GigaCore 10 Makes Pro-Networking For All Applications A Piece Of Cake
The GigaCore 10 Gigabit switch from Luminex - the manufacturer's most versatile plug-and-play Gigabit Ethernet Switch to date.
Luminex's GigaCore 10 Gigabit Switch is designed to assist the live events and touring industry where effortless set up, flexible use options, compact size and rugged reliability are key. Luminex has also designed a range of accessories to enable easy rigging in all professional environments, including touring trusses, a 19-inch rack and wall mountings. With eight fully pre-configured Ethercon ports plus two FiberFox or Neutrik opticalCON connectors and a safety-standard compliant PowerCon TRUE1 Connector, the GigaCore 10 enables speedy design and set up of converged, multicast, PoE (Power over Ethernet) capable networks. One of GigaCore 10's key features is the 'easy group' function, which allows users to modify groups, change port settings or add devices to the network on the road, with speed and ease. This modification can be achieved without reprogramming the entire system. Lighting, audio and video protocols can be assigned to different colour groups and sent over the same network with a guarantee that each device will receive the correct protocol signal, whether it be Dante, RAVENNA/AES67, Q-LAN, sACN, ArtNet, MANet2, HogNet, RTTrPL (BlackTraX) or IEEE 1588 PTP V2.
PoE+ - ports running PoE+ to critical devices can be prioritised so that if the overall limit of 130W is reached, GigaCore will cut power to the lowest priority device first. The GigaCore also provides the option of creating up to 10 unique presets, one of which can be a preferred default that automatically reloads on reset. Should a link fail, Luminex's RLinkX redundancy protocol is enabled on all Ethercon and fibre ports and indicated by a blue LED when active. Such redundancy offers a stressfree, seamless, 20-40 millisecond switchover speed to a redundant link. The latest GigaCore 10 version includes the often-requested SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol), enabling users to remotely monitor the status of a GigaCore 10 device. Information on temperature and TX or RX traffic on each port can be accessed via a separate monitoring software such as PRTG or, alternatively, via the LumiNet Monitor app. The GigaCore 10 is now shipping. www.luminex.be

Protec Continues To Impress At 18 DUBAI - After 18 years of producing some of the region’s most memorable shows, Protec – a Dubai-headquartered event technical and staging solutions company, continues to deliver extraordinary experiences through its creative technical skills.
Protec founder and CEO Stephen Lakin
Company founder and CEO Stephen Lakin shares how Protec has grown from its first production in 1999 when it launched the Faiseliah Tower in Riyadh to become one of the Middle East's largest and most reliable companies. “We have seen the events industry evolve considerably over the last 18 years since I started the company. Technology has grown, creativity has become bolder and audience engagement now plays a crucial role in every event. Our clients are spending more time on developing bespoke events, creatively using content with technology to immerse and involve their audiences into their story’s environment. Technology continues to play an important role and new technologies are guiding content developers to dig deeper into their creative talents to make full use of the technical resources to deliver with impact and to stay current.
There is greater demand for a break from the typical sit and listen conference format to a more imaginative, dynamic, immersive and involving experience. This spurs us to continually think creatively and develop new ways of delivering our productions. So although we are one of the largest events technical and staging solutions company in the world, in my mind, our creative approach to all our projects and the ability to consistently create extraordinary experiences through clever use of technology is what sets us apart.” Protec offers comprehensive event technology and staging solutions - from innovative design through to technical planning to the eventual implementation. It has 10 fully fledged departments and over 140 handpicked full time staff who are highly trained and are at ease with the equipment and technology the company has continually

invested in over the years. All of Protec’s services are fully owned and operated from its facilities in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. With investments in excess of $75 million in the UAE, Protec makes it a point to stay ahead of the game – and Lakin shares how they manage to achieve that.
A key factor Lakin claims that has contributed to the company’s success is that it treats every event from the smallest of events to mega shows with the same dedication and commitment – an approach, he adds, that has cemented Protec’s relationships with its clients and has also played its part in the growth of the company as well as the industry in this region.
Protec provided lighting, rigging and video for the 2016 Autism Rocks Festival, headlined by famous artists such as Flo Rida.
“Our industry is constantly looking for new ideas, trends and methods. Protec has always catered to this growth and the desire to do things differently and over the last few years we have taken the latest technologies and applied it to our technical deliveries. We have always been a leader in using the latest technologies which are growing constantly. So as technology grows, we grow. If technology slows then we develop new technologies ourselves to continue our growth. I believe that we are not only one of the best technical companies in the world, but I also believe that we are one of the very few companies in the world that can honestly deliver the greatest events. I always encourage our clients and anyone who wish to use our services to come over and see us at our premises to see first-hand our capability and what we have to offer.” Today, Protec has a 147-strong team across all disciplines, with their growth including some of the largest shows the Middle East has seen (both corporate and rock 'n' roll), as well as thousands of smaller meetings and events.
Protec’s first production was in 1999, when it launched the Faiseliah Tower in Riyadh.
“In the last 8 months, we have invested again in new technology and strengthened our lighting, video and audio departments with new equipment. We have also recruited 14 new staff – from senior management to technicians to ensure we never fall short of the regional industry’s requirements with both quantity and quality. My continued promise to the industry in the region is that when it comes to designing and delivering staging and technical solutions for any event, we will always have what it takes to create fantastic shows and event environments that audiences would love to inhabit.” www.productiontec.com

15 Minutes With SGM's Peter Johansen
Peter Johansen speaking at the SGM showcase.
SGM was originally founded in 1975, and currently boasts over 40 years of experience within the entertainment lighting business, with one of the most experienced R&D teams in the world. The company is now specialising in LED solutions as part of CEO Peter Johansen's aim to regain market position as the leading company within the entertainment segment and architectural lighting design. ETA recently spoke to Peter about SGM's achievements and plans for the future.
Do you feel that SGM now has lighting fixtures and solutions that cater to a range of markets, or are you still looking to fill gaps? “Every three months we fill a new gap in the market! It's a little difficult to explain, but we see ourselves as the leader in LED light, and every time or everywhere there's a need for LED light, a demand, we create a way to fill that demand. The last few products we brought out were mainly focused on the theatre and TV studio market, and there's more to come – now we're aiming at the searchlights and outdoor lights.
The only alternative to searchlights now are those huge old devices developed around WWII to send out these solid beams into the air, they're based on old discharge technology and we are doing the same now in LED. Basically, our aim is to provide all users – architectural or entertainment users – LED solutions that are better than or equal to the traditional tungsten or discharge lamp technology.”
What has been the most successful product for SGM as of date? “As of today, that's very easy to answer – that would be the P-5. The P-5 was the first serious washlight that combined extremely high power with low power consumption, fantastic colour mixing and an IP65 rating in one unit. It's compact, powerful and can be used anywhere, in any segment of the industry. It's also the biggest-selling washlight in history, so you can see why we're so proud of it.”
INTERVIEW
40
ETA October 2017
Which is the current product you are most excited about? “It's like with women – the most exciting is the one you don't have, right? /laughs/ At the moment, we are very focused on the architectural segment, because we have nearly filled up the needs in the entertainment sector. By saying that we have nearly filled up the needs in entertainment, every time you have a product that fills up the gaps, that everybody is happy with, there's always a lighting designer who will say oh, I would like something that's twice as bright, and so we have to start from scratch again. We just did this a few weeks ago – we launched a new product called the P-10, and fortunately or unfortunately the launch of the P-10 came exactly at the same time as when the Rolling Stones went onstage, and the poor lighting designer Patrick Woodroffe needed something so strong that it would cut through all the other lights he would have on stage, and that became the P-10. Unfortunately because that was our first 12 prototypes, we had to skip the launch and give them to the Rolling Stones instead, so we were a little late on entering the market right now but we got the best test of a prototype ever.”
what we're buying. We have a fortunate situation here in Singapore, and we have very nice humidity, and there's a lot of rain, I love it! Some of our competitors can make very nice light fixtures that more or less look like ours, but it won't survive the environment due to humidity and air pollution and stuff like that. Once people have seen our fixture and learn that when we say weatherproof we really do mean weatherproof, when they realise that our fixture will last, when they see the LED itself will last, it's a piece of cake to convince them and sell our products to them.” As the interview concluded, Peter shared that he was hoping to get SGM's message as the leaders in LED lights out to the audience at their showcase meant to reintroduce the company to Singapore. He added that he was looking forward to meeting old friends to “exchange stories and hopefully also new establish business-related contacts”.
What are your thoughts about the Asian market? “It is more complicated and difficult than it was 25 years ago when I was out here with Martin. At that time we had nearly no competitors – now we have both good competitors and cheap Chinese competitors, but we don't really see any of them as real competitors because our products are so different. So our biggest challenge is to spread the message of what our products are actually doing, and once that message is received we see the Asian market is pretty easy to conquer, as we just did in China. The competitors are always a challenge, but we are different – we don't look at what they are doing. We don't try to make something that is a copy or a replica of theirs, or something with a little improvement – we are only looking at what the competitors are doing to find out what they are not doing, and what they are not doing is typically what challenges us to make a new product.”
Is there any particular strategy you employ to try to gain more market share in Asia? “Show improvement – we normally win markets in business when we show our products, and people understand

were difficult to reach. So each of the downlights had a lid which was attached to a piece of rope and a conduit with a very large hook on it …. let’s just say it was interesting to watch!”
The Canberra Theatre and The Playhouse were in need of new house lighting systems and so a tender was released that was won by local Sound and Lighting Specialists Sound Advice, who have extensive experience in architectural and theatrical lighting projects.
Andrew Tweedie, head electrician at the venue, wanted a solution that provided a warm colour temperature of 2700°K and a completely smooth dimming curve as he wanted to be able to produce nice long fades down to zero. Andrew was also eager to retain the look and feel of tungsten but was interested in the economic benefits of modern LED fixtures in the theatres.
“The Canberra Theatre’s existing system had really, really old Strand dimmers dimming PAR38 lamps flown in what were arguably acoustic panels at one point,” said Norman Korte, Managing Director at Sound Advice. “They were similar to a fibreglass rectangular cloud hanging above the seating and due to access issues, the lights in them
Consequently, Norman demonstrated the GDS ArcSystem of overhead LED products designed for installations where dimming, light quality, high colour rendering and ease of installation are absolutely essential.

“I showed them how beautifully the ArcSystem dims, with perfectly smooth dimming from 100% down to absolute zero, and they approved it for both theatres,” he remarked. “We supplied a cabled DMX solution to each theatre as Andrew Tweedie did not want to use the in–built wireless technology.” ArcSystem luminaires come in a variety of form factors, beam angles, and colour-temperature options, all with highefficiency optics and an outstanding quality of light ideal for any application. In The Playhouse, 18 x ArcSystem Pro Four-Cell Pendants were mounted one for one in the old locations on the lighting bridges. In The Canberra Theatre, 94 x ArcSystem Pro One-Cell luminaires were installed to provide high-quality light and smooth dimming with noiseless operation. These single, circular fixtures were installed into the lower ceiling areas. Due to the height in the Canberra Playhouse, the existing downlight luminaires were replaced with Four Cell Round luminaires mounted to the stage lighting catwalks and the smaller One Cell luminaires for the Level 2 seating. “In that space there are also some legacy incandescent battens that backlight wash all the seating levels in the tiered venue and, at this point there is no LED replacement for them,” began Norman. “So we’ve used an ETC DRd Power Control solution including ETC Paradigm dimmers to run all the legacy battens.”
Each Theatre uses the ETC Paradigm Control system including the touchscreen in a table top kit with fly cable to allow operators to place it where they want in the control room. Multiple pages and scenes were created on the touch screens include a custom GUI interface to enable the operators to vary fade times to suit. ETC button plates allow for simple recall of selected presets from locations such as Stage Manager, House Manager and strategic door and cleaner locations. DMX distribution throughout the spaces is provided via previously installed Pathway Connectivity Pathport Switches and Nodes which enable the existing ETC Gio consoles to talk directly to the house lighting universes as required.

T
The National Centre for the Performing Arts is famously nicknamed “The Giant Egg”
he National Centre for the Performing Arts is one of China's most prestigious and architecturally striking performance complexes. Recently, the centre invested in a large number of Claypaky's latest LED HCR wash lights, the Claypaky K-EYE K20, along with the Claypaky Scenius Profile, as part of a major upgrade to the lighting rigs in its theatre and opera halls. Known locally as the National Grand Theatre, The National Centre for the Performing Arts is located in Beijing, covering an area of 30,000m2 close to Tiananmen Square. The ellipsoidal venue's domed exterior of titanium and glass (which has earned it the nickname 'The Giant Egg') houses four bespoke, world-class auditoriums - the Theatre, Opera House, Concert Hall and another multi-functional theatre space.
"The National Centre for the Performing Arts needed to update its lighting rig as the equipment that was in use was over ten years old," says Zhang Wei, manager of the Beijing lighting department of A.C.E, Claypaky's official distribution partner in China, which made the sale. "As the fixtures were mainly to be used in the venue's performance halls, the venue's technical team had very specific requirements." With such a significant investment, it was essential that the fixtures could offer the technical team a superior colour output in this critical theatrical setting. The high CRI and CTO correction of the LED-based K-EYE K20 HCR meant the venue was able to use the low-power LED wash fixture in much the same way as they would a conventional tungsten wash light.

a lot of new, in-built knowledge, so is great in a theatrical application." Speaking of the Scenius Profile, Wei says, "For the largescale opera productions such as the recent production of Millennium Road, the Scenius Profile is a good choice. The production's lighting designer, Sha Xiaolan, used over 100 of these fixtures."

The K-EYE K20 HCR is the latest fixture to be released by the leading Italian brand. It features six LED chips - Red, Green, Blue, Amber, Cyan and Lime - to produce not only a wide range of colours and shades but a very high quality white light. The fixture features a typical CRI value of more than 97. "The National Grand Theatre is a long-term client of A.C.E," says Wei. "In making the sale to our client, we knew Claypaky products to be reliable and high-quality fixtures. The new K-EYE HCR has an intelligent colour system, with

The award-winning Scenius Profile is Claypaky's top-of-therange beam shaper. The fixture's high output comes from a 1400W OSRAM discharge lamp and is shaped by a framing system operating on four focal planes with a rotation of 90°. The Scenius Profile has made appearances on several of the National Grand Theatre's large-scale theatrical productions. As well as Millennium Road, the fixture has appeared on Along the Jinsha River, lit by lighting designer Hu Yaohui. The performance was staged to mark the 90th anniversary of the founding of the People's Liberation Army.

Showbiz Cinemas Ballarat First In Australia To Be Fully Equipped With Christie CP2208-LP Cinema Projectors
Christie CP2208-LP 3DLP laser phosphor cinema projectors to be deployed in all auditoriums
L
ocated in the new Delacombe Town Centre complex in Ballarat, Victoria, the contemporary 530-seat cinema complex comprises six screens and features luxury seats, surround sound and wall-to-wall screens, with the largest screen in Cinema 1 hall measuring 10 metres wide. With this installation, Showbiz Cinemas Ballarat has become the first cinema in Australia to be entirely fitted with Christie CP2208-LP cinema projectors, which provide high reliability and lower maintenance costs for theatre owners. The cinema has commenced commercial screenings on August 31.
“Being a regional Cinema, it is important for us to choose a system that would have no need for lamp replacements, and reduce the costs and time associated with maintenance, consumables and downtime of lamp-based projectors,” said Chris Jones, Director, Showbiz Cinemas. “With the added bonus of reduced power usage that the CP2208-LP has over other digital cinema projectors, our systems integrator MGS Group pointed us in Christie’s direction and helped us see the clear advantages that the CP2208-LP would have in a regional environment.”

Delivering up to 11,000 native lumens of brightness for screens up to 35 feet, the 3D-capable Christie CP2208-LP is virtually maintenance free with no lamps to change, offers a low total cost of operation, and a low carbon footprint for theatre owners. It is available as a complete system with the optional Christie IMB-S2 integrated media block and also works with other, popular Series-2 IMBs. It delivers superior content flexibility as its counterparts in Christie’s cinema portfolio with its ability to display DCI content, alternative content, 3D content and even content produced for display at high frame rates. Besides Showbiz Cinemas Ballarat, independent exhibitor Sun Theatre has also installed two CP2208-LP cinema projectors at its Metro site in Yarraville, Victoria. Known for its rich heritage, the iconic theatre now boasts 700 seats in eight exquisitely-furnished boutique cinemas featuring club seating with leather upholstery, a coffee table shared between all seats in each group, and ample legroom. The cinema, whose projection equipment is also installed and supported by MGS Group, has been using Christie cinema projectors for decades. Michael Bosworth, General Manager, Christie Australia, said, “We’re delighted that independent exhibitors such as Showbiz Cinemas Ballarat and Sun Theatre have placed their trust in our CP2208-LP cinema projector, which
marks a new level of digital projection. It is capable of illuminating screens in DCI compliant colour, supports various alternative content sources through dual HDMIover-DVI ports, and delivers images on the screen that are bright and engaging. The CP2208-LP can display a full range of content, from the latest Hollywood blockbusters to locally produced content from all over the world.” Lin Yu, Vice President, Christie Asia Pacific, added, “The CP2208-LP is the clear choice for independent exhibitors, local art houses in remote locations where accessibility can be difficult for lamp maintenance. We are very pleased that Showbiz Cinemas Ballarat has embraced this high-value and DCI-compliant digital cinema projector.” Besides laser phosphor illumination, Christie’s RGB laser projection technology is rapidly gaining followers around the world. Producing the brightest images, the purest colours and the best 3D visual experiences, it represents the pinnacle of laser-illuminated projection. In Australia, HOYTS Chadstone in Melbourne is the first cinema complex to be equipped with Christie’s RGB laser projection system with enhanced wavelength diversity, which offers a spectacular 3D viewing experience on silver screens. www.christiedigital.com

Dubai Opera Upgrades House Rigs With Claypaky Investment Technical upgrade to workhorse fixture inproves versatility for opera house
The Dubai Opera House upgraded with the Claypaky B-EYE K10
D
ubai Opera, located in what is claimed to be 'the most prestigious square kilometre in the world' in Downtown Dubai, has recently purchased 37 x Claypaky A.leda B-EYE K10s as part of a technical upgrade to the event space's lighting rigs. Dubai Opera is considered a masterpiece of contemporary architecture. The 'dhow-shaped' building, designed by architect Janus Rostock, houses a flexible, 1900-seat venue which can be transformed into a theatre, concert hall or 'flat-floor' event space. "Dubai Opera is a first-rate venue, and we present and produce top-quality performances," explains Geoffrey Wheel, Technical Director of Dubai Opera. "Our audiences expect a high standard, and as such we always strive to be the best. We therefore invest in the very best equipment and this is demonstrated in our stake in the Claypaky brand. Its products are of an excellent quality." The B-EYE K10 is a popular workhorse fixture for many designers across the globe, and the fact that it is widely available to hire in the Middle East market ensures that, alongside Dubai Opera's recent stock purchase, the venue can easily make additions on a production-by-production basis.
"Versatility is a key factor for us when investing in new fixtures," says Wheel, referring to the B-EYE K10's three modes of functionality - Wash, Beam and FX. "The fixture had to suit our main-stage concerts, meet the lighting and colour standard demanded by theatrical productions and adapt for use in our studio room and foyer for the more decorative lighting needs. Low power consumption, combined with high light output, was also top of the list when looking for a fixture." The zoom range of the B-EYE K10 is 4° to 60° making it suitable for environments with low ceilings and for shows in larger environments, while its high lumen-to-watt ratio means it is brighter than any LED wash luminaire with the same power rating. The fixture runs off a universal 100-240V power-supply and, due to its advanced LED technology, can produce spectacular effects for its relatively low power demand. Commenting on the sale of the fixtures, Wheel says, "We have had great support from our local dealer, Claypaky Middle East, especially from the area's sales coordinator Egor Popovski." www.claypaky.com

“Sail to the Future” Gala Sees beyerdynamic Support For BRICS 2017 Held in Xiamen, the summit was attended by leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
T
he 2017 BRICS Summit saw a warm welcome extended to BRICS leaders, and an evening gala held at the Banlam Grand Theater. China Central Television (including channels CCTV-1, CCTV-3 and CCTV-4) broadcasted the gala live to audiences across the globe.
TG1000 Bodypacks and Handheld Transmitters
The Banlam Grand Theater
In the evening gala, 200-channels of beyerdynamic TG1000 digital wireless microphones were used in piano ensembles, Chinese instrumental ensembles, other musicians and vocalists (lead & chorus). An additional 20-channel wireless was made available for backup & redundancy. Collectively with other brands, nearly 240 channels of wireless microphones and 100 channels of wired microphones were deployed on sites. Under such a complicated operating environment, all 200 channels of TG1000 digital wireless microphones were fired up and on standby mode, with none of them powered down until all performances were completed.
The 200-channel beyerdynamic TG1000 Digital Wireless Microphones
The Banlam Grand Theater boasts an impressive structure: in the Golden Hall, the “shoe box” layout of the auditorium can accommodate 1497 pax. The overall stages adopt an internationally prevailing “T'-shaped design, in which the main stage covers an area three times the size of the auditorium. With a proscenium arch of 18x12m, the main stage is 31.1m in width and 23.4m in depth; putting the side-stages at both flanks together would make it a size of 70m in width and 46.5m in depth. Adjustments had to be made to the performance site's design scheme – a wireless microphone system was built to consist of over 200 channels for live TV broadcasting, an unprecedented case in China and even the world. Preparation work was taken on by EAD Digital Technology, distributor of beyerdynamic in China.

The secret to this lay in the function of a cascade connection for antennas offered by TG1000 digital receivers. Each principal machine can extend loss-free signals to 6 (12-channel) machines through cascade connection. In this case, the reserved capacity for RF signals reaches 24 routes x 6 – a total of 144 receiving machines (288 channels).
A group photo illustrating the beyerdynamic representative, Xiong Muping, chief acoustic designer, Tian Chensheng, and chief director of the evening gala, Chen Weiya.
The wireless frequency conditions in the performance venue were notoriously harsh given the vast and intense security intercom system deployed in such an important international event, so EAD engineers initiated strict monitoring of on-site radio frequency variations using the 470Mhz-789Mhz wide-band spectrum scanning technology provided by TG1000. The stability and flexibility provided by the TG1000 allowed EAD's engineers to produce the largest number of wireless microphone channels to be employed in a single site. 8 WA-ATDA active directional antennas were installed on both sides of the stage, ensuring that the numerous TG1000 bodypack transmitters used by the chorus could be always within the coverage of signals. After being amplified on WA-AMP2, the signals were transmitted to WA-ZPAD for integration, and then sent to 24 TG1000 digital receivers via 5 WA-AS6 signal distributors.
The gala evening consisted of five chapters including Wind from the Sea, Sky and the Sea, Rhythm of the Sea, Tide and the Sea as well as the Dream from the Sea. When the first performance – large-scale dance Wind from the Sea was on show, 40 TG1000 bodypack transmitters were equipped on orchestral instruments of China National Symphony Orchestra.

The second chapter Sky and the Sea was a piano and violin duet. With a mechanical elevating stage being used, the piano was required to horizontally removed to the center of the stage, wired microphones thus could not be used for picking up the sound. 10 TG1000 bodypack transmitters were ingeniously concealed beneath the piano and inside the costume of the violinist. In addition, there was almost no signal compression thanks to the digital transmission technology applied in the system, helping incisively and vividly bring out the details of the piano performance.

Realising 4K HDR In Asia With Infinity Multimedia
Infinity Multimedia was recently engaged by Taiwanese band Mayday to record and produce the band’s concert in Kaohsiung
The HDC-4300 was integrated into the SR Live for HDR workflow that delivers uncompromised image quality in 4K HDR and HD SDR simultaneously with HD-based production system.
E
stablished in 1986, Infinity Multimedia Production (Infinity) has over 30 years of media expertise and provides the latest offering to the Taiwan broadcasting and content creation market. Striving to constantly improve themselves by acquiring the latest technical knowledge and equipment, Infinity aims to satisfy the growing and everchanging demands of the industry. “It is a challenging landscape for us but we constantly push our limits and work with partners to ensure that we are at the forefront of development. At the moment, we see the lack of adoption of 4K in the Taiwan market and it is difficult to expand the market,” said Lin Jiawei, Vice President, Infinity Multimedia Production. “Nonetheless, we are glad that we have customers who understand the true value and the possibilities 4K HDR can bring to viewers.”
Infinity was recently engaged to record and produce a concert for Mayday, one of Taiwan's most renowned bands. Working with Sony Professional Solutions Taiwan, Infinity was able to produce one of the first 4K HDR concerts in Asia, with a total of 20 units of Sony 4K/HDR cameras deployed. One major factor that Infinity had to consider in selecting Sony products and solutions for the concert was Sony's position as a thought leader in the development of 4K and HDR technology. The focus of the project was to record the entire Mayday concert at Kaohsiung in the highest picture quality possible - 4K HDR - so that the footage could be used for future plans, such as a feature film. Infinity was mindful of the contrasting lighting used at the live concert and the issue

of overexposure. After careful consideration, they decided to film the concert with Sony’s equipment, utilizing S-Log3 and HDR XAVC format to achieve the highest picture quality possible.
Sony’s S-Log3 brings out images in HDR beautifully, which improves the recording clip quality while the format also allows for postproduction purposes.
One of the major factors that Infinity considered in selecting Sony products and solutions for this groundbreaking concert was Sony’s position as a thought leader in the development of 4K and HDR technology.
“We realize the potential that HDR brings and our customer was also keen for another breakthrough in live concert production,” said Infinity. “With Sony’s S-Log3, it helps bring out images in HDR beautifully. Not only it improves the recording clip quality, the format also allows our postproduction unit to reproduce a better video.” To support this project that fulfills 20 channels of 4K/ HDR recording, Infinity had deployed a number of Sony equipment. They include 9 units of the HDC-4300 4K/ HD system camera, 8 units of the PMW-F55 Super 35mm 4K CMOS sensor compact CineAlta camera, 1 unit of the HDC-P43 4K/HD point-of-view camera, 2 units of the PXWFS7 4K Super 35mm Exmor CMOS sensor XDCAM camera and the award-winning BVM-X300 4K TRIMASTER EL OLED critical reference monitor. At the heart of the production was Sony’s SR Live for HDR workflow, which equips the team with the ability to achieve more control and increased freedom during capture, resulting in images that prioritise detail. Capable of converting into numerous broadcasts and delivery formats in real-time, the straightforward and efficient workflow delivers 4K HDR and HD SDR simultaneously with HDbased production system, which was important to Infinity as they needed to broadcast live in SDR while ensuring the HDR format was available for post-production.
To ensure the success of this first 4K HDR live production in Taiwan, Sony Professional Solutions Taiwan put together the finest - expertise, trainings and on-site assistance - to support Infinity throughout the process. “We are very honoured to have Sony specialists from Japan HQ and Hong Kong alongside the Taiwan team to assist us personally,” said Sony. “Without their expertise and knowledge sharing, we would not have achieved the best with this project, creating a milestone in Taiwan’s live production history.” Responsible for numerous broadcasts and live productions, Infinity truly understands that the key to success is having an efficient workflow and reliable equipment that produces the best image quality: “In a live environment, we cannot afford mistakes. To us, Sony is the epitome of reliability and never fails to deliver groundbreaking innovation to the industry. We look forward to more collaboration and surprises from Sony in the near future.” www.sony.com
