A New Direction For ETA Reinvention is part and parcel of life. Products and software get updated regularly to keep in tandem with market needs. Staying stagnant is a sure way of losing the battle. The key with reinventing your products or brands is to ensure that the message does not get lost and the reinvention caters to true needs. It is with this in mind that from 2018, ETA will be taking a different approach in its reach and editorials. We are transforming ETA into a platform that is fully dedicated to the needs of the technical and production crew and supporting disciplines. We hope to produce articles to help them further upgrade their knowledge, share know-how, understand what their peers are up to and seize opportunities. Our aim is to produce a magazine dedicated to creativity and technology coming together to provide an exceptional experience to all involved. Technical and Production crew are critical to the success of any event. THERE IS CURRENTLY NO REGIONAL MAGAZINE DEDICATED PURELY TO THE TECHNICAL AND PRODUCTION CREW IN OUR INDUSTRY. We aim to plug that gap with our editorials and reach - from Front of House Sound Engineers & Sound Designers, Electricians, Engineers, Riggers, Stagehands, Technicians, Lighting Designers and Operators, Production, Stage & Event Managers, Programmers, Projection Designers to Technical Directors. In 2017, the two events attracted a total of around 100,000 visitors from 144 countries to the Frankfurt Fair and Exhibition Centre. For companies of all sizes there was a wide spectrum of options to showcase products, ranging from all-inclusive booth packages at an entry-level price and open air live-demonstrations to the integration of brands and endorsers in the event programme of the two shows. This important international trade-fair duo will move even closer together in 2018. New features include the concentration of the audio, DJ and recording product segments in Hall 4.1 and other improvements in the layout of the fairs. With measures to reduce noise levels and the focus on trade visitors on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
morning, Musikmesse will raise its profile as the platform and source of inspiration for professionals from the musicalinstrument and educational segments, and for musicians. For all music fans, there will be a reduced-price privatevisitor ticket on the Friday afternoon and Saturday. The focus of the hall is on products that are not only for professional users in the field of event and media technology but also of interest to musicians, music producers and musical-instrument retailers, e.g., microphones, effects and signal processors, cables, mixing desks, control units, monitoring tools, production tools, DJ equipment and recording hardware and software. As in the past, visitors will find products for (live) PA systems and permanent installations in Hall 3.1. Also part of Hall 4.1 is the ‘Silent Stage’ area, which was launched in 2017 and presents an innovative stage concept for clean sound and effective monitoring, as well as the Sound & Recording Lounge, which offers lectures on mixing, miking and production.
Optimised hall layout, community-specific programme and benefits programmes for retailers Unlike any other event in Europe, Musikmesse presents the complete spectrum of musical instruments and genres. In addition to a comprehensive product overview, it offers targeted content for different musical communities. The highlights of the Drums, Percussion, Guitars + Amps segment are the Drum Camp and the Guitar Camp where top international drummers and guitarists give exclusive performances, as well as workshops and masterclasses. Exhibitors have the opportunity to make presentations on attractive complete exhibition stands in the immediate vicinity of the camps. With the move to Hall 9.0, electric guitars are only a stone’s throw away from acoustic guitars in Hall 8.0.
Musikmesse is also planning to continue the successful cooperation with the ‘Woodstock of Wind Music’, which began in 2017 and, with rousing bands and groups of modern wind music on the outdoor area, proved to be a great source of inspiration for visitors. For the specialist musical-instrument trade, Musikmesse offers free admission and exclusive services within the framework of the ‘Musikmesse Insider’ and ‘Musikmesse Premium’ benefits programmes. The Business Area in Hall 11.1 offers room for business discussions and a dedicated further-development programme for the musical-instrument sector in the form of the ‘Business Academy inspired by SOMM’. Additionally, the Musikmesse matchmaking programme brings together suitable companies and retailers. Under the heading Music Education, Musikmesse groups together products and services for music making that are relevant to teaching and society. Thus, at the ‘Discover Music’ area, the youngest visitors have the chance to try out musical instruments for themselves while the ‘Music Education Lounge’ provides presentation space for organisations from the world of teaching, culture and music business. Additionally, exhibitors can take part in the programme of the ‘Musikbiz & Culture Forum’, which spotlights subjects such as professional development in the music sector and the social significance of music making. Musikmesse is also the setting for the finale of ‘SchoolJam’, Germany’s biggest competition for school bands, and the presentation of the European School Music Award, which honours the achievements of music teachers at general schools.
The Keys + Piano segment moves to Hall 11.0, close to the Portalhaus entrance. The ‘Piano Salon Europe’, which returns this year, provides Europe’s piano makers with a platform for showing high-grade upright and grand pianos. Part of the hall is a presentation and lecture stage where, inter alia, the ‘Piano Player of the Year’ award will be presented.
For the third time running, Musikmesse will be accompanied by the Musikmesse Festival in 2018. In the evenings, visitors can look forward to concerts by a broad spectrum of extraordinary acts at the Exhibition Centre and venues throughout Frankfurt.
Acoustic instruments remain in Hall 8.0 and, together with string and plucked instruments, percussion and harmonica instruments, cover a broad spectrum. On the ‘Acoustic Stage’ in the adjoining Galleria, visitors will be able to see outstanding artists from the acoustic-music scene – from classical and jazz to pop. Woodwind and brass instruments are to be found in an acoustically separate part of Hall 8.0.
In the eastern section of Frankfurt Fair and Exhibition Centre, companies present trailblazing technologies for entertainment, integrated systems and creation. There, visitors from all event and media technology disciplines can not only discover a host of new products but also gain inspiration and expertise in subjects of relevance to them from the complementary programme of events.

Shure Advanced RF Seminar Draws Full House
Audience members checking out the displayed equipment after the seminar.
SINGAPORE: The Black Box at Gateway Theatre saw a full house turnout during the recent Shure Advanced RF Seminar, organised by their Singapore Distributors, Electronics & Engineering Pte Ltd (E&E). Attended by over 145 industry professionals, the seminar focused on how the RF spectrum was getting increasingly crowded and complicated with more devices in operation, and what professionals could do to get the most out of their RF range.
The seminar rounded off with a question-and-answer session. Highlighted to the participants were also details about the on-going Wireless Rebate Program – currently only available in Singapore and led by E&E. The programme allows users to trade-in their existing wireless systems for a rebate with the purchase of any Shure Digital Wireless Systems and is only available for a limited period.
Speaking at the seminar was Independent Technical Consultant at Shure Asia, Hayden Leiper, who shared his experience as well as tips to help minimise dropouts between the receiver and antenna. Points made during the seminar were followed with reallife examples – when explaining how the RF range was primarily affected by three main factors (transmitter output power, antenna choice and placement, and the noise floor). Leiper highlighted various cases where operators faced problems with the RF signals by accidentally blocking them with obstacles such as cages or grids. Other topics discussed during the seminar included the different types of antennas, amplification and distribution tips for wireless microphone systems, various noise sources, dealing with them, as well as how to plan and coordinate frequencies.

Penn Elcom Announces India Operation
INDIA: Multinational flight case hardware and 19 inch racking manufacturer Penn Elcom announces the launch of a new distribution centre in Mumbai, India. This will be based in the Vasai area and will be headed by Rodney D’Monte, who will be working with six staff for now. The numbers are expected to increase as operations ramp up. Penn Elcom Chairman Roger Willems stated, “Mumbai is a major commercial and cultural hub and a great strategic location with a very positive future … and we enjoy its vibrancy and energy! That’s exactly where we want to be”. This follows other recent major investments in Penn Elcom’s global manufacturing and sales network - in Canada, the UK and China – and is also in response to growing demand for their ranges of premium quality products in key market sectors like professional audio, AV and IT. Roger - known for his lateral thinking and commercial wisdom – also comments they see India and the whole sub-continent as a huge growth market and a powerhouse of the future. “Although it is very different, the rawness and the sheer potential remind me of how I felt about China 15 years ago,” he says. With this in mind, he also expects – as a highly industrialised nation – to increase Penn’s market share of domestic sales there. Penn’s Indian enterprise is also about responsible business and finding a balance. Their highly successful approach
in China has included integrating and building sustainable commerce and opportunities that can economically and socially impact the immediate community. There is the chance to enhance working practices and ideas - including administration and production – via information and experiences shared between all Penn’s facilities around the world. This maintains worldwide consistency and offers skills / learning opportunities via active training programmes and staff interchange between Penn in the USA, Canada, Mexico, the UK and Asia. This is an initiative that benefits all the company’s resources and the model will be enthusiastically embraced in India. The Indian operation will first focus on the racking and hardware elements of Penn’s business, and will also manufacture and distribute products utilizing well known quality brands like Amphenol cables and Neutrik connectors. It will also work closely with the Chinese operation – based near Beijing – sourcing its basic hardware from there and the two manufacturing bases in the UK. “It’s a long term investment with a lot of work and detail involved in setting up the infrastructure, but all signs are that India will become another star performer,” concludes Roger. www.pennelcomonline.com

Perth Concert Hall Installs Silent Elation SixPar 300s
AUSTRALIA: Elation Professional products are supported in Australia and New Zealand by distributor Lexair Entertainment, who earlier this year were involved in the refresh of the entire Perth Concert Hall lighting rig on Australia’s west coast. Made possible through the State Government’s Department of Culture and the Arts Infrastructure Improvement Program, the lighting project saw Head of Lighting, Alex Spartalis, with a lot of decisions to make. The choice to make the Perth Concert Hall home to Elation SixPar 300 RGBAW+UV LED fixtures was not one of the difficult ones. With the whole rig headed to LED, Alex had to audition a huge range of luminaires, and the SixPar 300s were an easy winner. “I loved the six-chip design, the inclusion of amber, their narrow beam angle capability, the 5-pin DMX, and the build quality,” Alex listed. Added to this is the fanless design, a must in acoustically sensitive applications like classical concerts. “All of the features Alex mentioned were a big plus,” added Sean McKernan of lighting supplier Evolution 512, “but the fact they’re completely silent was incredibly important. A lot of fixtures Alex and I auditioned simply did not have an acceptable noise floor.” The nine SixPar 300s are included in the house rig as floating fixtures – they’re often used on stage, but also roam around the venue, sometimes used as powerful
uplights on the nine columns of Perth Concert Hall’s iconic Brutalist façade. “They’ve got great color mixing, and they’re really bright,” continued Alex. “They’re a good complement to the rig for our school and dance shows. We often use them on a stick of truss lower to stage than our 16.3 meter ceiling when we need something closer. They’re also our back light color off the screen truss now, because when we have a screen in place, it takes out our back light bar.” The indoor version of Elation’s SixPar 300 runs 18 12W RGBAW+UV LEDs, with the amber and white LED’s helping lighting designers to achieve extremely natural whites and pastels. They have 15° beam and 25° field angles, electronic strobe and dimming (0-100%), and five variable dimming curve modes. Vital for filming, they have flicker free operation. Multiple units can be power linked, and all can be controlled via RDM. Lexair and Evolution 512 pride themselves on professional service, prompt technical support, and quality products. “We have a great relationship with both Evolution 512 and Lexair,” confirmed Alex, “and hopefully we’ll be buying more equipment from both of them soon!” www.elationlighting.com

Elation DARTZ 360: New Projection Possibilities From A Narrow-Beam Luminaire Elation Professional is offering the DARTZ 360, a unique LED beam/spot fixture that offers new projection possibilities from a compact, narrow-beam luminaire. The DARTZ 360 is the first RGB source beam/spot to combine such a high level of output with smooth colour-mixing, gobos, effects and sharp optics in such a small package. A single-source 50W RGB LED engine produces a powerful and tight 3-degree beam for smooth, colour-mixed beam effects similar to a discharge lamp. Output is 29,000 Lux @ 5M. Extremely bright for its wattage and size, the combined LED engine source/optics package not only provides brighter output than previous multi-chip LED “beam” solutions, the field of light is also noticeably more homogenous. Safe to use at any distance, the DARTZ 360 is ideal for use in smaller clubs and at smaller events. The smooth, full spectrum colour output combines with fourteen fixed gobos and effects to produce perfectly colour-mixed beam or image projections. With remote focus for a perfectly smooth colour-mixed beam, the light quality is exceptional. This focusable beam effect is similar to a discharge lamp source but in a fixture that offers full LED colour mixing with an extremely flat field of light and gobo and projection effects. The DARTZ 360’s effects package also includes 6- and 8-facet independent rotating prisms, which can be overlaid
to create new morphing effects. A linear frost filter is also included that softens the beam when a wash effect is needed. The DARTZ 360 is compact and phenomenally fast with lightning-quick motors and continuous 360° pan and tilt movement that adds an intense level of energy to any size show. A high speed electronic shutter and strobe are also included. Dimming of the LED engine is smooth and stepless from 100 to 0 percent and the unit includes five dimmer curve modes to suit any specific application. When used with cameras, the fixture works absolutely flicker-free thanks to its user-adjustable LED refresh rate and Gamma brightness settings. Standard DMX controllable and RDM ready, the DARTZ 360 can also operate via Art-Net, Kling-Net and sCAN protocol. Users can pixel map multiple units via Art-Net, easily adding into matrix displays the added features of beams and effects. The DARTZ 360 features a fullcolour LCD menu display with a multi-button touch control panel that is 180-degree reversible. Professional grade 5pin XLR, RJ45 etherCON, PowerCON TRUE1 in/ out connections are included as is a multi-voltage universal auto switching power supply. WORK PRO Unveils Lightshark Range WORK PRO has announced their new Lightshark Range, the first ever DMX-based hardware lighting console range to offer wireless, browser-based control from a multitouch smartphone or tablet. With support for up to three connected devices simultaneously, LightShark sets a new standard for features and usability at its price point. The LightShark range comprises two independent products, the LS-Core and the LS-1 console, both developed and designed entirely within WORK PRO's lighting division. The LS-1, which retails for 1199 Euros (MSRP) within the EU, brings together the best features from the world of innovative software-only lighting control and marries them to an intuitive, ergonomic assignable hardware control surface. The LS-Core, which retails in the EU for 499 Euros (MSRP), omits the LS-1’s hardware control surface but offers exactly the same lighting control software, processing power, and smartphone/tabletbased software control interface. Alongside all of the features users expect from a modern, fully featured lighting control system (including detailed control of colour and gobo options via palettes, comprehensive grouping options, CueList operation with up to 1200 Cues and Lists, customisable automation via an elegant, easy-to-use graphics-based Executor window, and special effects such as fanning), LightShark offers intuitive control over a total of eight 512-channel DMX Universes, plus built-in support for an ever-growing library of lighting Fixtures. A Fixtures editor is also built into the console for those that wish to modify or customise Fixture control templates. Because the LightShark control software runs on the console itself, and the Wi-Fi-connected tablet or smartphone is merely controlling it via a simple web browser, the control software is fast and responsive, as well
as offering the benefits of real-time, multi-touch control. For those professionals who prefer control via a physical user interface, it’s worth remembering that once set up and assigned, all aspects of the LS-1 system can be controlled entirely from the hardware surface; a generous LCD display on the right of the control surface shows how the physical controls are assigned at all times, and updates when the user switches between control assignment Layers. LS-1 users therefore have the freedom to control their lighting systems via the browser-based control software, a combination of the LS-1 hardware and their preferred mobile device, or the LS-1 hardware alone, according to personal preference. All of the required hardware interfacing is available on the back of the LS-1 console (including Artnet, a 5-pin DMX Out for control of one 512-channel DMX Universe, and an Ethernet port for access to a further seven DMX Universes), along with a USB connector for updates. With a further nod to ergonomics, there’s even a built-in stand to hold an iOS or Android device on the back of the LS-1, and an extra, dedicated USB charging socket on the rear panel to keep associated tablets or Smartphones charged at all times. Designed from the ground up as a complete lighting control system, and shipping with the browser-based control software pre-installed on the WiFi-enabled console (Safari, Chrome Firefox and Opera are all supported), the LS-1 includes everything apart from a suitable tablet or Smartphone in its retail price, including a rackmounting kit. Both the LS-1 and LS-Core are expected to ship early in 2018. www.workproaudio.com

LED vs Projectors In Cinemas Samsung Electronics installed its first ever commercial Cinema LED Screen at Lotte Cinema World Tower in Korea. Designed as a High Dynamic Range (HDR) LED theater display, the Cinema LED Screen creates a captivating and vibrant viewing experience through next-generation picture quality. Recently Samsung announced the installation of another LED Screen in Thailand. This made ETA wonder about the impact of LED as an alternative to projection. We reached out to Christie a pioneer in Cinema projection to get their views. Brian Claypool, Vice President, Global Cinema Product Development, Christie, gives us his view. ETA acknowledges that all technologies have their advantages and disadvantages. Recently a debate has arisen as to whether LED solutions for cinemas are a viable alternative, now, to traditional, projection-based exhibition technologies. On the surface it’s an intriguing concept, but LED cinema solutions still need to evolve to meet the requirements of cinema. It is essential for exhibitors who are analyzing the technical features and cost/benefits of these LED cinema offerings to consider the costs, colour accuracy and range, display considerations and other factors before taking the leap. Let’s look at costs to begin with. They are often, first and foremost, the key consideration for exhibitors in adopting new technologies. In Christie’s opinion, RGB laser projection is still the most economically-viable solution and one that best meets the requirements of exhibitors. Going forward, we expect to see the costs of RGB laser projectors coming down with the introduction of second-generation RGB laser systems for mainstream cinemas, which will also bring a tangible improvement in the quality of the image. Then there are the issues around colour reproduction. Some LED screens for cinema are capable of reproducing DCI-P3 colour, but LEDs in general have a difficulty in maintaining colour stability and show a lack of consistency as well, with frequent, targeted replacements needed, leading to higher costs. In contrast, RGB lasers maintain steady colour output through their operating lifetime. Conventionally, most LEDs are incapable of getting beyond
Rec. 709, making them fall short of the wide colour gamut available with RGB laser projection.
Display factors also need to be taken into account. RGB laser projectors and LED screens display visual data through different methods. A projector reflects light off a screen which could be flat, curved, and is permeable for audio, whereas a LED screen is a large, direct-view display. While point-source illumination gives LED screens a slight edge at controlling contrast, RGB laser projection technology, epitomized by the next generation of RGB projectors like the Christie CP4325-RGB CineLifeTM series projector with RealLaserTM illumination technology, are also making great strides in contrast and dynamic range performance. As well, LED fill factor and surface reflectivity are major contributors to a direct emissive display achieving high contrast, but again at significant cost. In terms of the ability to display 3D content, LEDs do not excel in delivering 3D images. Where projectors normally use a small polarizer in front of a lens to achieve 3D, an LED screen would require an enormous and costly polarizer in front of the entire screen –also at the expense of spatial resolution- or the use of an expensive and high maintenance active 3D system. With projectors, the illumination source can be replaced as it ages and is quickly up and running again at original performance specs. But with LED screens, the illumination source replacement requires swapping entire modules. Such a process is difficult and costly, in even the most mature solutions used today. True, an aging projector does need ongoing, basic maintenance and light source replacements. But with an aging LED screen there are also observed dead pixels or failed pixels stuck in the onposition that add to their potential nuisance. Being at the forefront of innovation for imaging technologies, Christie has several core focuses, among them cinema projection and LED displays. We are of the view that front projection is still the most optimal and viable imaging technology for cinemas, until LED screens are economical to purchase, install and operate within the stringent requirements of the cinema world.

Christie And Avollusion Light Up Iconic Landmarks At Inaugural Lumieres Hong Kong Festival
From 23-25 November, the festival offered activities and celebrations for the general public, young and old, to rediscover the city’s heritage.
F
eaturing three nights of light installations, video projections, art pieces and dining, the Lumieres Hong Kong Festival celebrated the 20th Anniversary of the Hong Kong SAR Establishment and aimed to show Hong Kong in a bright new light. During the festival, landmark sites and buildings of the city in Sheung Wan, Soho, Central, Tsim Sha Tsui and Kowloon were transformed into a canvas for some of the most renowned local and international light artists to showcase their vision of the city’s very own culture. Christie and Avollusion worked together as partners during the festival of installations, performances, audio effects and audience interaction. “We’re very proud to be a part of Lumieres Hong Kong and have been working on the technical design since the conceptual stage of the festival. Due to the scarcity of space, we have had to come up with unique solutions to counter the challenges of executing projection mapping projects in Hong Kong,” said Justin Choy, Managing Director, Avollusion.
“Through this event, we hope to show that building mapping is indeed possible in Hong Kong and hopefully we can inspire others to come up with new, creative and innovative ideas that help bring the cityscape to life. In the live events world, there is still so much more technology that we want to show the people of Hong Kong, and hopefully this is the first step to making that happen.” Denys Lavigne, Vice President, Global Christie 360, added, “Lumieres Hong Kong is our first major collaboration since we’ve established our new Hong Kong office and we’re very excited about this project. Exploring new innovative and meaningful ways to integrate digital media experiences in urban environments continues to be a priority for our team. In addition to the collection of large-scale experiences that will be illuminating the city, we are particularly proud of the interactive light painting station we’ve created as it will allow visitors to express themselves and create digital art that they can share on their social media platforms. We are confident that the result of this great collaboration between the Lumieres team, our partner Avollusion and Christie will offer the people of Hong Kong and festival visitors a truly magical experience.”

Among the highlights was an eye-catching projection mapping performance on the façade of the Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong, one of the most exclusive luxury hotels in the world located on Connaught Road in Central. Measuring 34m in width and 33m in height, the projection canvas was lit using 10 Christie Boxer 4K30 3DLP projectors, and managed by Christie Pandoras Box servers, with contents entirely designed and produced by Christie 360. The result? A highly entertaining show exemplified by bright, colourful and dynamic visuals. In addition, Christie established an interactive booth near the hotel to increase users’ engagement and experience. Known as LUX, it elevated the traditional event photo booth to the level of interactive experience. Festival visitors were invited to pose for a snapshot. Then, using analogue light sources, virtual brushes and custom-built software, the snapshot was transformed into a piece of dynamic digital art by Christie’s team of light painters. The best visuals were then projected onto the façade of the Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong as part of the projection mapping showcase. Using Christie visual solutions, Avollusion transformed the following landmarks and buildings into fascinating canvases of art:
The General Post Office
The projection mapping performance, titled “The Anooki Shake Up Hong Kong” was created by French artists Moetu Batlle and David Passegand, and sought to bring the “Old Lady of Pedder Street” to life with a joyful show featuring the Anooki, two lovable Inuit characters. From
a huge trampoline to a giant aquarium, the white façade of the General Post Office became the new playground of the Anooki. Small windows became fountains, filling the building with water. The captivating visuals were made possible using six units of Christie Boxer 4K30 projectors. City Hall The projections on the façade of City Hall, titled “E-motion”, was a journey in time portraying the evolution of Hong Kong from its past to its present and towards the future, playing with light, shapes, colours and movements. Created by French designer Yves Moreaux, the show transformed the facade of City Hall in order to suspend the notion of time, and immerse the visitor in a bath of images and lights. The massive installation comprised 16 units of Christie Boxer 4K30 projectors.
Clock Tower A total of six Christie WU14K-M 3DLP projectors were deployed for the projection mapping on the iconic Clock Tower. Titled “Long Striker”, it was an interactive projection with a digital participative element where visitors could challenge each other and become involved in lighting up the Clock Tower, while also trying to achieve the highest score. Designed by interactive design agency Vendredi 4, the installation at this venue was highly popular, especially among the young. Lin Yu, Vice President, Christie Asia Pacific, commented, “We’re thrilled to use light as a medium to enhance landmarks sites and buildings in Hong Kong through this major event. It was also a wonderful opportunity to showcase the talents of local and international light artists to accentuate the beauty and vibrancy of this city. The deployment and usage of Christie projectors at various venues has certainly helped us to achieve this objective of entertaining the public and delivering a fantastic shared experience.” www.christiedigital.com

L-Acoustics Tames Challenges Of Taipei Arena For Golden Melody Awards
Winly Engineering & Trading was tasked with designing and supplying an L-Acoustics system that would cover the Taipei Arena for the 28th edition of the GMAs. simulation programme, Soundvision, to provide us with the optimum result.”
O
rganised by the Ministry of Culture for Taiwan, the Golden Melody Awards (GMAs) is the Chinese speaking territories’ biggest and most prestigious music awards, with nominations open to artists from countries including China, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong and has set the region’s standard for stage design, audio, lighting and visuals. Winly has worked on the GMAs since they started two decades ago and is fully aware of the importance of this most prestigious event and spent a considerable amount of time prior to the event on the design and preparation of a system that could cope with the venue’s deep, yet narrow configuration, basing the design on L-Acoustics K1, K2, Kara and SB28. “A big challenge for the system design was the shape of the venue, its limited rigging possibilities and the fact that the production requested no fill system in front of the stage,” says Winly’s president and production manager for the event, Andy Chen. “With the help of L-Acoustics’ Alvin Koh, we made an initial design of the system with L-Acoustics 3D acoustical
With the need for clean sightlines, and therefore no option to incorporate delays, the final design comprised two main hangs of six K1 plus 10 K2, one each positioned left and right of the stage. The K1s at the top of the hangs covered the raked seating at the rear of the arena, which extends to a distance of approximately 75 metres at its furthest point, whilst the K2s were angled downwards to cover the majority of the arena floor. Outfills of two hangs of eight Kara each covered the seating areas to the sides and further hangs of six Kara downfills handle the VIP area directly in front of the stage. “There were many restrictions, one of which was that the main PA had to be pushed forward to provide better sightlines for the stage design,” adds sound engineer Mike Li. “All the subs were also flown to clear the sightlines, with two arrays of six SB28 per side hung in a ‘cannon’ configuration – one hang in front of the other, offset in the vertical - to provide all the sub harmonics needed for the venue, while achieving great control on the stage area. We knew that by choosing this combination we would be able to deliver the audio requirements for the event.” “Thanks to Alvin’s assistance and valuable system design advice, despite all the challenges and restrictions, we produced an optimized design for the event,” concludes Andy Chen. “Everyone was impressed with the directivity control, even coverage and tonal balance of the L-Acoustics system for every seat in the Arena.” www.winly.com www.l-acoustics.com

PA’s microphones played a key part in helping Thai rock band Carabao deliver a stunning live set when they performed at the Wiltern Theatre, Los Angeles, as part of a recent US and European tour. Hugely famous in Thailand and other Asian countries, Carabao reached cult status long ago and are now one of the most successful rock groups in the world. Lead singer and founder Yuenyong Opakul, aka Aed Carabao, is also the founder of energy drink company Carabao Daeng, which is well known throughout Europe thanks to its involvement in various forms of football sponsorship – most notably sponsorship of the English Football League Cup. Carabao incorporates eight musicians, including Aed Carabao who has been using a DPA d:facto Vocal Microphone for some time. For the Los Angeles performance, Alan Sachsel – a long time friend of the band who helps with their US gigs and projects with US artists such as Carlos Santana - arranged for Carabao to be miked entirely with DPA so that they could asses the microphones prior to investing in various models for their own permanent collection. Sachsel, who also works as a sound engineer at the San Jose Convention Centre, is fully versed in the benefits of DPA’s microphone technology because he regularly uses d:fine Headset Microphones as part of his job. Sachsel contacted Eric Stahlhammer, Area Sales Manager for DPA Microphones, who arranged for the band to demo a selection of microphones at its LA gig. These included
“The sound was amazing,” Sachsel says. “You could really hear a difference. The drummer, Uan, who also plays other instruments, said he’d never heard his kick and snare sound so good - and he loved the simple clips that attached the d:vote mics to his flute and saxophone.” Sachsel adds that, with four lead guitarists on stage, spill from other instruments can become an issue, especially with Members of the band Carabao vocal microphones. expressed satisfaction with using DPA microphones.
“This was where d:facto really scored,” he says. “The band’s FOH engineer, Theera Chinhango had no problem with feedback or with the microphone picking up extraneous noise from other instruments. The microphones simply captured the sound of the vocals and delivered them with absolute clarity. Everyone was impressed by the quality of the vocals because they were crystal clear and you could hear every nuance of each singer’s voice.” After completing their Los Angeles concert, Carabao played a concert in New York before heading to Europe for gigs in Norway, Sweden and Germany. “The Los Angeles gig gave the band a good opportunity to see what DPA can do for their live sound.” Alan Sachsel adds. “Now they are back in Thailand, they are planning to invest in five or six DPA microphones, mainly for trumpet, saxophone, kick and snare – the instruments that they felt really came alive with the DPAs we used in LA.” www.dpamicrophones.com

AFL Grand Final 2017 With JPJ Audio
It’s been smooth sailing ever since JPJ Audio took over audio system design and operation for the AFL Grand Final six years ago.
T
he Killers absolutely killed it – pun intended – during their performance at this year's AFL Grand Final.
For sound designer James ‘Oysters’ Kilpatrick the biggest hurdle is the sheer size of the playing field, which is around 500 metres in circumference, and the fact that everything has to be set up in matter of minutes. Of course, it also has to be taken down in an equally short amount of time. “We do a rehearsal during the week where it all has to be wheeled out and struck down afterwards, and then we do a soundcheck and out it all goes again,” said Oysters. “We
also have a large amount of outputs as we’re driving the TV OB for the music, sending a mix with ambient mics to Triple M plus feeding the ground and the media. It takes us about a week to wire and thoroughly check all of the outputs as there are so many including various mix minus feeds.” Oysters ran an Avid Profile mainly because he wanted stability and the Waves Plugins to run without the complication of a server but also because of its’ small footprint as space is premium. He also required a console that was capable of running ProTools whilst at the same time, could add markers for memories via snapshots, as the rehearsals are recorded on the Thursday and on the

Friday there are more rehearsals running everything off the ProTools to the broadcast truck. The reliability of the Avid Profile was also a major factor in its choice especially as the weather and temperature can be quite erratic in Melbourne at that time of year. At FOH control with Oysters this year were Tim Millikan and Ryan Fallis, with Oysters sending his outputs to Tim to distribute via matrix mixers, line drivers and active splitters. Everything that Oysters had on his console was mirrored onto Tim’s DiGiCo SD11 in case Oysters console was to fail. Ryan looked after the fully redundant ProTools replay and would also send everything he was doing to Channel 7. All control gear was on a UPS and were all timed, with JPJ doing extensive power failure tests in the factory leading up to the event. “It was all fibre with Channel 7 directly to me so that was a bit easier than years previously,” added Oysters. “Tim and Bowden Birkett (JPJ Audio’s head system engineer) could actually change any part of the PA or any part of the zoning, or even the levels to Channel 7 without asking me.” It’s important to remember that this is a TV show, not a concert, which can be a hard thing for people to get their head around. It’s not only live in the ground, its going live to millions people, there is no waiting till somebody is ready, it just rolls ready or not.
on all of the radios, allotted all of the frequencies and it worked incredibly well. Everyone is on in-ears because without them the amount of slap back in the playing field is disorientating.” Sixteen carts of d&b audiotechnik cabinets were wheeled out, each cart holding three d&b J Series cabinets. “The ground runs in mono with redundant loops of signal and power so the most you could lose would be two or three carts,” said Oysters. “We can even broadcast for about 15 to 20 minutes without power although the speakers would fail. We could have run it with fibre but that would have got quite complex and I try to keep it as simple as possible, especially as so many complex things have failed at this event in the past. Eventually it will be entirely networked but when we do that, we’ll probably run it in the shop for a month before.” Oysters remarked that this years’ show by The Killers was the best yet, even though the band was so complex he didn’t take a full split of all of their gear.
“As they have so many electronics such as sequencers, synthesizers and keyboards, we had that all bussed down a series of stems by Marty Beath,” he explained. “We Sound designer James “Oysters” Kilpatrick. took the vocals, guitars and drums all separate but it was condensed across sixteen lines instead of say fifty-six.”
“You have to use wind socks as it’s our windiest month in Melbourne and it really swirls around the ground,” said Oysters. “RF can also be a problem and in the past, it has failed. This year Frontier production bought in Peter Cochrane from ARTICULATE Communications to manage all of the RF and communications. He lowered the power
Once the footy had finished, The Killers performed a free show for anyone who wished to attend reverting back to a normal concert set up with FOH and monitors and with Oysters looking after OB to television only. jpjaudio.com.au

disguise Supports Yuzu Tour Featuring Innovative Sculptural LED Character
4x4 media servers unify the different feeds needed to push content
J
apanese folk-rock duo Yuzu are celebrating their 20th anniversary with a tour across Japan. The band’s unique stage show features a huge back wall of LED screens of assorted sizes and shapes and a giant sculptural Yuzutaro LED – an anthropomorphic character whose head is fashioned from the Japanese citrus fruit called yuzu. disguise (formerly known as d3) 4x4pro media servers were chosen to unify the different feeds needed to push content to the LED back wall, the sculptural Yuzutaro LED plus the stage riser LED. “We have used disguise extensively in the past so we knew it would be the best option,” says Roy Chung from Los Angeles-based content creator POSSIBLE. “The biggest challenge for us was figuring out the ambitious sculptural Yuzutaro LED that was the central fixture of the stage show. When show director Ijitsu Hiroaki of Show Design, Inc. first presented his concept to us, we knew there would be significant technical challenges but were excited by the creative opportunities afforded by this unique sculpture.” The POSSIBLE team worked with several different partners in Japan and the US to realise Yuzutaro, which is over 15 meters tall and has 100,000 hand-placed LED bulbs. “We spent several weeks getting the mapping right, and Nihon Stage and Sanko worked tirelessly to finish fabrication and LED placement, respectively,” says Chung. Yuzutaro has an LED pitch of about 70mm. The LED back wall is a mix of 30mm and 18mm pitch products. “The tight production schedule meant we would not have very much time with the sculpture itself, so the visualizer was indispensable for testing if our content was actually sticking to the sculpture correctly beforehand,” Chung explains. “When we arrived in Tokyo for technical rehearsals, all that early groundwork we laid meant we only had to do a bit of dialing in on disguise with the help of the programming team from disguise Rental Partner, Hibino Corporation. When we saw Yuzutaro light up for the first time, I think everyone felt all the sleepless nights were worth it!” Hibino provided three 4x4pros: one was the main timecode system, one was the timecode back up and the third was a DMX-controlled unit for flexible use. “We ran the show with timecode most often, but some parts are run with the grandMA2 controlling the grand master and switching the camera feeds and content,” explains Naoki Ogawa, who handled the disguise project set up for Hibino. “We also mapped the camera feeds using the parallel map [treating] the randomly configured LED walls as one big LED wall.”
In addition, says Ogawa, “since the show has a 30-minute medley we used version control. With that feature the content creator doesn’t need to re-render 30 minutes of footage every time. They just have to re-render the part they need to change.” The disguise operator from Hibino is Toyokazu Fujisawa; the video director is Tatsuro Ogawa from Orange Collar; show director is Hiroaki Ljitsu - Show Design and additional content was created by P.I.C.S in Tokyo www.disguise.one
