I was at a technology conference recently and two things caught my attention for the education industry: 3D classroom and avatarbased classroom. The first was an interactive 3D software solution developed by Swedish company Sensavis where teaching materials are made more engaging through 3D visualization methods. The latter, describes a shared digital platform where students personalize an avatar and use it to attend classes in the virtual space. Quoting Cyndi Chan of MIT Sloan School of Management on the popularity of their avatarbased classrooms, “It’s crazy, people are really taken to it.”

With 3D and virtual technology set to revolutionize the education industry, various stakeholders have been looking at how can they incorporate it into their teaching curriculum. Simulating reality is not a new concept; some tested it by converting 2D materials to 3D while others created an entire virtual learning experience using role-playing techniques. Making teaching materials easier to digest is a never-ending chase for educators around the world – which brings us to rise of Virtual Reality (VR) & Augmented Reality (AR) technologies. REVIEW: Tech 4 HoW 2016 Manila – Behind The Scenes

PHILIPPINES: Organized by Spinworkz Pte Ltd, publisher of Systems Integration Asia & Entertainment Technology Asia, the inaugural technology seminar for Houses of Worship was held on the 8th and 9th March 2016 in Manila, Philippines. Audio Guys and SonicSensePH are co-organisers of the event. Targeting at the various churches in Manila, the event at SMX Aura, Taguig, saw a total of 262 visitors, exceeding the organisers’ target of 200. The visitors were qualified AV professionals, with representatives from at least 40 different church denominations.
The key highlight of the event was the paid-for seminar by Robert Soo, which saw an overflow of delegates attending both days of his presentation. Robert spoke on Sound Reinforcement and Stage Monitoring and Sound Mixing, over the two days. “As an audio consultant, I found the seminar both informative and practical. Robert Soo's approach and techniques are easy to digest and apply. Robert also corrected and clarified audio related terms and debunked some of the myths. I believe the participants are happy
with their “take-home” knowledge. Kudos to Spinworkz, Audio Guys and SonicSensePH for organising this event,” said Marci Sang-Olan, one of the attendees. Allan Nierva of JIL Church also commented, “Robert's approach made it easy to understand. It was a holistic view to tech issues. I especially liked how he broke up the needs for each church member from the pastor to the musician, to the choir and congregation and how it all comes together.”

However, though Tech 4 HoW was a considerable effort for a local event in the Philippines, the organisers had higher expectations. “Personally, I am a little disappointed as we were hoping to have at least closer to 400 visitors,” said Thomas Richard Prakasam, Managing Director of Spinworkz Pte Ltd. “The pre-registration numbers were solid but 70% of them did not show up. Thankfully, we still had walk-in visitors. ASIA: Held on March 17, Atlona marked the official opening of its Asia office in Hong Kong with a ribbon cutting ceremony where senior company executives hosted major AV integrators in the region. One such event is the FIS Ski World Cup. Chief Participates In Japan Shop 2016 JAPAN: Organised by Nikkei Inc., Japan Shop 2016 is an annual trade exhibition for Shop Systems and Fixtures. Featuring the latest products and services relating to commercialspace design and display, the show also showcases a wide array of store systems, devices and other tools to help store owners run their businesses more efficiently. Chief, a brand of Milestone AV Technologies participated in the 2016 show in Tokyo recently and the AV mount specialist saw an overwhelming footfall at its booth. Some of the key solutions for digital signage exhibited include the LWM Series and new Fusion series menu board mounts. Having participated in the show for the second time, the brand saw a variety of visitors to their booth – from the end-users themselves (such as the shop owners), architects to designers. It was a show all about the retail market.

CHINA: Jiangsu TV was founded in 2001 and is part of the Jiangsu Broadcasting Corporation, one of the most influential media operators in China and is an internationally well-known media outlet incorporating comprehensive media services, such as television channels, radio frequencies, newspapers, magazines and Internet products. Recently, the major broadcaster has selected eyevis technology to deliver news to millions of TV viewers from the heart of its new state-of-the-art media centre. The two eyevis video walls are made up of a total of 48 eyevis 60-inch DLP rear projection cubes type EC-60LHD-1000. The eyevis installation was completed with the help of the design company Click Spring. The eyevis cubes were installed in two video walls, in 6×4 and in 8×3 layouts. Both video walls will be used to deliver background content during broadcasts as well as showing live news feeds from outside broadcasts, media content and interviews with audiences and other guests.
The LED cubes from eyevis use innovative Cluster-LED technology for the illumination of the projector. Sophisticated adjustment possibilities allow a precise configuration of the colour temperature which is mandatory for video walls in TV studios. To ensure stable representation of colours and brightness on all cubes in the video wall, the cubes feature an automatic colour adjustment method that aligns the display settings of all cubes to a uniform level. Wang Ke, Director in charge/senior engineer for Jiangsu TV, commented, “We chose eyevis for this project

Epson To Reinforce High-Brightness Projector Segment Offering mind-blowing image quality, reliability and flexibility, the lineup will include seven models ranging from 25,000 to 6,000-lumens. Epson will announce full product specifications later in the year, and there are plans for the projectors to be launched within Southeast Asia by this year. INTERNATIONAL / SOUTHEAST ASIA: Epson has announced that it will this year launch a new lineup of 3LCD business projectors with a laser-light source. The projectors, which include the world’s first-ever 25,000-lumen 3LCD projector¹, are also the first to include inorganic 3LCD panels with a laser light source including an inorganic phosphor wheel¹. With Epson’s newly developed laser light source and proprietary 3LCD technology, the new lineup will offer customers outstanding performance, and includes a 4K-compatible lens and the world’s first zero offset ultra-short throw lens².
Epson has in recent years steadily increased its lineup of projectors in this class for applications including large exhibition rooms, concert halls and outdoor signage. NMK Academy Announces 5.0 Seminar Series MIDDLE EAST: Nicolas M Kyvernitis Electronics Ent (NMK), professional AV and communication solutions distributor in the Middle East region, has announced its fifth year of the seminars’ series under the title NMK Academy. INDIA: InfoComm International’s Executive Director and CEO David Labuskes had been in India for a weeklong visit recently interacting with the industry fraternity and government as well as academic functionaries in three major cities- Hyderabad, Chennai and Bengaluru. Lusail Stadium Sports Sennheiser Wireless Audio Solutions MIDDLE EAST: As it prepares to become the first country in the Middle East to host the landmark FIFA World Cup Soccer championships in 2022, Qatar is investing in state-of-the-art infrastructure and technologies for the stadiums at which the matches for different sports will be held. Among these is the successful implementation of world class wireless microphone systems from Sennheiser at the Lusail Iconic Stadium, which played a vital role in enabling handball fans across the world enjoy the televised broadcasts of live matches. This stadium will be used for boxing, handball and basketball championships and also for live concerts in the future. Sennheiser, which also supplied microphones for the football stadiums in Brazil, highlighted the importance of its audio solutions. “With several hundred million TV viewers watching live, there is no room for error. Thrilling commentaries, pitch-side reports, the roar of the audience and sounds of all the on-field action are essential parts of the viewing experience. The BlueRiver Revolution First ProAV Chipset That Supports True 4K/60/4:4:4 Video Signals

ounded in 2011, AptoVision is a Montreal-based company that provides advanced chipsets for AV/KVM signal extension, matrix switching, IP-based switching, video-wall and multiview applications. In 2014, the company introduced a revolutionary AV signal distribution technology – the BlueRiver – and it has since ignited a spark of change in the proAV industry. In brief, BlueRive NT is a chipset that allows installers and OEMs to replace traditional AV matrix switches with IP switches while delivering noticeably higher price/performance, flexibility and scalability. The chipset enables end-to-end systems while integrating advanced inline signal processing capabilities such as light compression, broadcast quality scaling and multichannel audio down-mixing. To learn more about this ground-breaking proprietary technology, SI Asia's Shireen Ho recently got hold of Aptovision's Director of Technical & Strategic Marketing, Justin Kennington, to find out more. Here are the excerpts: What is BlueRiver?

Market Presence
The BlueRiver family is based on AptoVision’s own FPGA IP. The solution is sold as a standalone chipset. The key breakthrough of BlueRiver is the AptoVision Channel Coder and Automated Clock Recovery. The Channel Coder is how we package all the different types of data we work with (audio, video, control, and Gigabit Ethernet) into a single packet-ized stream for the network. The Automated Clock Recovery system is how we overcome the central problem of using Ethernet for AV: Audio and video are inherently synchronous types of data, while Ethernet is a fundamentally asynchronous medium.
BlueRiverNT+ is AptoVision's latest product, leveraging Ethernet as a transmission and switching engine. It is also the first pro AV chipset to support true 4K/60/4:4:4 video signals.
The core BlueRiver technology has been around since AptoVision’s beginning in 2011, and is now in its fourth generation. The original BlueRiver technology was able to transport uncompressed audio, video, Ethernet, and control on a single point to point fibre optic link.
Compared to BlueRiverNT, BlueRiverNT+ adds the flexibility to transmit over fibre or copper media (up to an industry leading 250 meters on standard category cable), and the power of the new Plethora Engine. The Plethora Engine incorporates all of the AV processing needs of the pro AV industry into the BlueRiverNT+ chipset. Plethora includes video scaling, video wall processing, multiviewer compositing, audio downmixing, and more.
BlueRiverNT upended the point to point status quo by moving that same uncompressed AV, Gigabit Ethernet, and control signals over standard 10 Gigabit Ethernet. This means that the traditional matrix switch – which is extremely costly to develop – can be replaced by low cost commodity Ethernet hardware.

So what is the motivation behind the development of BlueRiver?

“Ethernet always wins. AptoVision recognizes that and sees now as the time for pro AV to finally make the transition that so many other industries already have – movie rentals, stock brokers, travel agents!” enthuses Justin.
He continued, “The use of frame buffers and re-clocking results in a 1-2 frame latency, frame drops, frame repeats, and lack of genlocking, making such systems unsuitable for many ProAV and broadcast applications.”
“Now is the time because the network has finally become fast enough. 10 years ago we were used to 1080p or 720p video, but that wouldn’t fit down a standard 1 Gbps network pipe. Today the demand is for “full 4K” – 60 Hz with 4:4:4 and even HDR. 10 Gbps networks are now incredibly affordable and can carry that kind of signal.” Justin Kennington
But AptoVision's ACR technology is able to uniquely overcome this limitation and convert such networking components into “synchronous” AV transmissions through a unique clock reconstruction mechanism that ensures clock coherency across the entire system. “The resulting benefit is zero frame latency, no frame artifacts and built-in genlocking capability, all on off-the-shelf, costeffective networking components,” said Justin. Some familiar proAV names who are partners with AptoVision include Aurora Multimedia, AvenView, Creator, C-Win Technologies, DVI Gear, Go-Max Electronics, Grandbeing, IDK Corporation, iMAGsystems, and ZeeVee.
Moreover, the use of off-the-shelf networking “centric” components such as networking FPGAs and optics for high quality AV signal distribution also presents an inherent challenge, Justin explained.

“We are trying to push the AV industry to stop creating new operating standards, and take advantage of the biggest and most widely deployed communication standards in the world, namely Ethernet and Internet Protocol (IP).” Continuing, he remarked, “The IT industry is a trillion dollar global industry. At AptoVision, we believe that the AV industry should look to IT for standards and key R&D. Why reinvent the wheel?”
Competing Against Similar Technologies
So what sets BlueRiver apart from competing technologies like HDBaseT etc.? “Fundamentally, HDBaseT is a point to point technology. To build an HDBaseT switch, you actually build an HDMI switch, and add on costly and complex HDBaseT circuitry. This has many disadvantages.”
“So many more companies can innovate. We will see new 800-lb gorillas, and also new smaller niche players. We will see convergence of our “sub-industries” as digital signage companies work their way into commercial AV, and pro AV manufacturers work their way into video wall processing, etc etc. This technology makes it easy to cross those boundaries, so the only limits are a business’s imagination.” - Justin Kennington on BlueRiver's potential to disrupt status quo.
According to Justin, HDBaseT matrix switches must be of fixed size (or if they are modular, they must be of fixed chassis size) and cannot be easily expanded. Traditional matrix switches are also inherently proprietary (ever tried putting an AMX card into an Extron chassis?). Being unidirectional, HDBaseT also lacks certain flexibility. Last but not least, Justin also mentioned the high cost to develop traditional matrix switches.
With AV over IP technology like BlueRiver NT+, a manufacturer doesn’t have to develop any matrix switches at all. A small to medium-sized company can focus on developing a small portfolio of endpoint devices (transmitters and receivers) and have a complete and credible product line capable of competing with any of the big boys in the matrix switch business.
“Not only are they complex, but a credible product line must include switches in several sizes, from 6-10 ports up to hundreds of ports. This limits the playing field to the very few companies with resources to invest in this kind of development. A smaller R&D pool means less innovation for the whole industry – and higher prices,” he commented.
Moving Forward
In contrast, running AV over IP and Ethernet networks carries none of the above-mentioned disadvantages as Ethernet switches are already available off the shelf in sizes from 8 ports to over 1,000 ports – and can be easily expanded and added on as a system grows.
“With that in mind, you can expect to see more sophisticated processing capabilities built in, easier integration into products, and between AptoVision-based products and others (e.g. high end audio processing systems). And of course we are architected for speed. Today we are the only provider who can extend and switch 4K60 4:4:4. Tomorrow we will be the first to 8K,” said Justin on AptoVision's future roadmap.
“In addition, Ethernet switches are 100% interoperable with one another. No problem mixing your Cisco with your Netgear with your Arista. The entire internet relies on this, so it's guaranteed. Also, as Ethernet is fully bi-directional, so your 16 port switch may be configured as an 8x8, or just as easily as a 1x15 or a 12x4,” said Justin.
Noting the intense excitement from the industry, everyone knows that it will only a matter of time before AV will eventually all be transmitted over to Ethernet. And now, the time is right as bandwidth and technology has began to come together.

aving manufactured lasers for over 47 years, Power Technology Inc., (PTI) is one of the oldest laser companies in the world. With a history of making the most precise lasers possible for semiconductor processing, defence and bio-analytic markets, Power Technology gained their laser expertise in electrically driving lasers, managing their unique heat problems, and capturing the light emitted by the lasers. Bringing the same level of intensity and precision to the projection industry, Power Technology recently announced a breakthrough in light source with Illumina Light Farm. Introduced as the world's first multi-projector laser light source, the Illumina Light Farm allows a single source of light to be delivered via fibre optics to multiple new or retrofitted projectors.

Setting its sights to redefine the projector market, SI Asia's Shireen Ho recently caught up with Walter Burgess, PTI's Vice President of Engineering, to know more about the game-changing laser light source.
SI Asia: What is Illumina Light Farm exactly? BURGESS: The Illumina Light Farm is a single light source that provides visible light to every projector in a building complex. That building can be a cinema complex or any location where multiple large projectors are used. Until the Illumina Light Farm was introduced, each projector required its own light source. With our single light source providing visible light to 10, 15 or 20 projectors, it really is a game changer. It's available with cinema quality colour spectrum or with a slightly less expensive colour gamut for large venues.
SI Asia: What is the core technology behind it? BURGESS: There are two core technologies behind the Illumina Light Farm. One technology involves the light source while the other technology surrounds our speckle reduction technology.
The Workings Behind Illumina Light Farm
Laser Illuminated Projection (LIP) requires high optical power in the Red, Green and Blue spectrums. A single colour laser cannot economically produce all the light needed for projection. Many companies have tried to make single colour high power lasers and failed. Since there are no reasonably priced high power visible lasers, Power Technology rely on lower power lasers. The engineers of PTI combine the optical outputs of many lower power visible lasers to produce the large number of lumens that projection requires.
The core of our light source is managing a large quantity of light sources to produce the massive amount of laser light needed for projection. The Illumina combines multiple lasers to produce light. Managing the electrical, thermal and optical properties of a single laser is routine. Managing the electrical, thermal and optical properties of over 100 lasers simultaneously is where the core technology is found. The second core technology is the ability to despecke the illumination source. Lasers are naturally mono-chromatic - they have a single colour of light present in their output. They do not produce a broadband spectrum like a bulb or LED. This mono-chromatic output has side effects that are normally beneficial in typical laser applications. In projection, this side effect is the production of speckle. On-screen, it appears as a grainy structure that looks like sand. If you move your head, the pattern on the screen moves too. This can be distracting and results in a low quality viewing experience. After we finished a military contract in 2012 we had spent $1.5M learning how to reduce speckle with lasers. We applied the lessons we learned to illumination sources for projectors. The results? The Illumina family of projects.
SI Asia: You call the Illumina Light Farm the World's First Multi-projector Light Source, what is the evidence that supports this and what sets it apart from your closest competition? BURGESS: The Illumina is the world's first commercially available multi-projector light source. Other companies

have talked about 'Light Farms' as a concept but have never brought a product to market. (To be clear, the Illumina light sources come in different configurations. One configuration is designed to supply light to a single projector.) The Light Farm is designed to supply ample amounts of light to multiple projectors simultaneously. This sets it apart from every other product in the market. Every one of its competitors is connecting a single light source to a single projector. We have moved beyond single projectors by supplying a light source for the entire cinema complex.
SI Asia: Market reception so far...? BURGESS: The market reception has been really good. In November 2015, we disclosed our relationship with NEC. We participated in the NEC's New York Showcase event. Our single projector light source was displayed with NEC’s NC1440L model projector. It provides up to 10,000 lumens. We are also deep in discussions with other projector manufacturers in addition to exhibitors about OEM possibilities and retrofitting existing projectors. OEM projector manufacturers are looking at our product very strongly. Since we are independent from every projector manufacturer, they are free to buy a light source from us without strengthening a competitor. We don’t have exclusivity with anyone because we developed the light source at our own expense.
Illumina Light Farm
We shorten their time to market. Projector manufacturers already have the projector they need. Once they adapt it to accept laser light, they purchase a Illumina light source and they are ready for market. To develop

their own light source, it would take years and high cost investment cost. Meanwhile the market opportunities will have been taken by their competitors.
SI Asia: Do you foresee more of such technology to come into the market soon? BURGESS: I anticipate Laser Illuminated Projection will become more prolific in the market over the next five years. The cost of high power visible lasers continues to fall. Red lasers are fairly inexpensive because they use technology and infrastructure previously available for DVD players. Since DVD players have been replaced by internet streaming and solid state data storage, the capacity to make red lasers is inexpensive and available. Green and Blue lasers are newer types of lasers. They require different technology and infrastructure. As with all technology, they will continue to decline in price over the next few years. As the price of the key components is reduced, the market adoption will increase. Because of the price pressure in Cinema market, this decline in price is happening faster than we have seen in 47 years that we have made lasers. www.powertechnology.com

ISE 2016: What Caught Our Eyes? The SI Asia team gives their report.
O
nce again, Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) 2016 concluded in Amsterdam RAI with a bang, marking the start of a new year with new business opportunities. Its first four-day show this year saw an overwhelming volume of visitors and exhibitors alike, breaking all previous records. According to the organizers, the 2016 edition saw a total of 65,686 registered attendees, a 10.7 per cent increase from the 2015 edition. With these numbers, ISE has officially positioned itself as the largest AV and systems integration trade show in the world. “The volume of attendee traffic and its spread over the four days confirms our belief that the extra day was necessary and that it adds value for visitors and exhibitors,” stated Integrated Systems Events Managing Director, Mike Blackman. With 1,103 of the world’s leading AV manufacturers and service companies sprawled across the 12 exhibition halls of RAI, visitors had a unique opportunity to view the latest products and technologies. Without a doubt, it was an event not to be missed.

At a show where thousands of AV products compete against each other for your attention, it is not an easy task to remember the USP of every product. Having said that, though, I feel that it always help when an exhibitor seeks new ways to demonstrate their products. Some resort to building flashy, spacious booths (Hello Samsung, Crestron) to showcase their solutions, while others deployed various marketing and event gimmicks to generate footfalls (Yes Panasonic, we saw those displays operated by robotic arms and that pole dancer). But I guess launching a new product segment that is atypical of the company's portfolio helps too. Take a cue from Biamp. An advocate of AVB and a leading provider of professional audio solutions whose DSPs, amps are well-known in the industry. The company took the ISE opportunity to launch its first collaboration tool – Devio™, to the proAV market. Bringing Biamp's full conference room audio solutions to smaller spaces like huddle rooms, Devio is their first product with video capabilities. Fully pre-programmed, Devio is a compact, single-box solution packed with conferencing technology. Its beam-

forming microphone has three 120-degree zones, providing full 360-degree coverage of the meeting space. Plus, the Devio microphone is also able to track and intelligently mixes conversations from around the table. At ISE, Devio's capabilities and functionalities were demonstrated in a mock meeting space which Biamp had constructed at its booth. Without a doubt, the audio quality is fantastic.

Also launching a brand new type of solutions was Kramer. A familiar name in the industry, Kramer is a leading hardware manufacturer of switchers, extenders, scalers, cables, distribution amps – all the parts that make AV integration possible. At this year's ISE show, the industry major unveiled Kramer Network, a pure-software enterprise management platform created specially for AV networks. Through Kramer Network, integrators and end-users will be able to manage any-sized AV network, configure and control and IP or legacy AV device wherever they are. It gives IT managers and systems administrators complete control of all their AV devices, room environments and IP streams. Easy to set up and operate, Kramer Network is accessible from any single-point in the network – drastically reducing overall costs by performing remote maintenance. In addition, Kramer Network can also support high quality audio and video streaming over IP without configuring the IP network. Isn’t that awesome?
Present at the ISE show was the BlueRiver NT+, AptoVision's latest product. With sights set high to replace traditional AV matrix switches with IP switches, SI Asia recently caught up with Justin Kennington, AptoVision's Director of Technical & Strategic Marketing, to learn more about the ground-breaking technology. name of the Amazon Echo unit before me, I can ask it (her) to do things like switch on the TV or turn up the speakers etc. During the demonstration, I saw how the screen in the Home Cinema was turned on after saying, “Alexa, trigger movies in the cinema”. According to a Wyrestorm staff, it takes only about 3 seconds to execute the command in real-time. After witnessing this, I can’t help but feel that IoT (Internet of Things) and AI (Artificial Intelligence) are already invading the AV grounds and it is right before me! But are we ready for it?

Do you like to see works-in-progress kind of product? Because I do. So when I was shown a prototype by BenQ, I was floored. Called 'InstaShow', BenQ's latest innovation is a plug-and-play wireless streaming solution that allows multiple presenters to immediately switch wirelessly projecting full HD content without driver installation or extended cable runs. With its 5GHz 802.11ac WiFi operation, the InstaShow could be a potential hit with corporates and higher education when it’s launched officially.

From switchers, extenders to distribution amplifiers and accessories, visitors to the Atlona were mostly overwhelmed by the number of products exhibited. But the key highlight of the booth was the soft codec conferencing system, the AT-UHD-HDVS-300-KIT. Offering first-of-its-kind display capabilities, the AT-UHDHDVS-300-KIT allows display control using CEC, TCP/IP or RS-232 signals. This means that many more types of displays can be controlled, costs are reduced, and wiring is simplified. In a commercial setting, when a switcher is integrated with a display, the AT-UHD-HDVS-300-KIT forces the display to power on automatically when a laptop is connected. At the end of the presentation, when the presenter disconnects the laptop, the AT-UHD-HDVS-300-KIT forces the display to power off. Ease of presenter interaction and the savings incurred by auto-display shutdown provide a significant return on investment.

Last but not least, enter the drones. No longer unfamiliar in the industry, we see drone applications in various commercial settings, from surveillance to delivery. Hence, there was much anticipation when ISE announced that it will have an area dedicated to the drones. Led by Stampede Global, the Drone Arena at the Park Foyer was full of buzz over the 4 days. Whether you were there with an agenda to speak with leading drone manufacturers, or was just simply curious, you definitely learnt something new. “The great thing for our industry is, in a B2B world you need a consultative sales process to make this thing work,” said Stampede Global's President and COO, Kevin Kelly. “Not every end user has the same needs, desires or goals, and so it’s not something that can be satisfied through the normal retail channel. The companies that are operating in the military channel don’t have the right mechanisms in terms of the way they go to market, so it’s really perfect for our industry. Video and B2B is our industry; we’re already trusted advisors.” Drones in AV – I guess exciting times are ahead indeed!

The Event To Attend For All Things AV

Well there is no doubt that ISE has become the largest AV exhibition in the world from all aspect – exhibition space, number of exhibitors and number of visitors. As I keep lamenting, if it is not the Chinese New Year period when ISE is generally held, we will see far greater attendance from Asia for the event. Next year the event will be held from 7 to 10 February, which is about a week after the Chinese New Year celebrations, so we may see more visitors from Asia in the 2017 edition. We need to also congratulate the organisers for the effort that they have put in. The ISE App, the Pitch & Match event, the M2D (Manufacturer – Distributor connection event), Industry briefings, Networking events and the list goes on. As Mike Blackman, MD of Integrated Systems Event stated “ISE is not just an exhibition but an event,” and how right he is. Oh and they even looked into the catering which was much improved with more outlets open which I am sure many of the visitors appreciated. ISE saw more than 50 new product announcements. The Digital Signage segment had more than 225 exhibitors making it the world's largest DS event and the dedicated UC Hall had about 194 exhibitors offering visitors a plethora of solutions to look at. In short, ISE has become THE EVENT to attend for all things AV.
This is the first time that I got to see Panasonic's Light ID Technology that was on showcase at their booth. In essence, Panasonic has developed technology for using an LED as the light source so that smartphones can read optical ID signals containing various kinds of information. So instead of QR code, this would work as or even more effectively. Even if there is a crowd standing in front of the display, as long as you are able to capture some light emitting from the display via your smartphone, you can get access to the information being

transmitted. The best part of this is that the information can be received via any normal smartphone and the information is coming to the user at incredible speed as it is light travelling through. Great for signages and information displays.
Boardrooms and Huddle Rooms have become a hot bed for competitive solutions. Not surprising - considering that much money is spent in these spaces. Shure revealed its Micoflex Advance Technology at ISE, which according to the company, offers premium networked solutions designed for AV/V conferencing environments. The solutions comprise of Ceiling Array and Table Array microphones that work in tandem with Audio Network Interfaces featuring Shure's IntelliMix DSP Suite. I sat in at the demo room to hear the Microflex Ceiling Array in action and it worked really well in masking voices when necessary and the audio came through loud and clear.
The folks at Crestron have been for years highlighting to the media that they are they in the forefront of the AV – IT space and to be fair they have had much to show in that front. This year at ISE their theme was “The Crestron Internet Of Things” which is appropriate considering where the whole world is heading towards. The key message from Crestron was that whatever IT platform or technology is being used, their solutions are able to integrate and work seamlessly. The huge booth space was cleverly demarcated to showcase exceptional office and home environment experience using
Crestron technology. Solutions that make up the Crestron IoT agenda include: the Crestron PinPoint which makes for easy navigation amongst staff in the work environment; the .AV Framework platform that enables the user to standardize their AV systems on a single IP-based platform throughout their organization; Pyng which is an App that allows you to control your Home environment; management and control via Crestron Fusion Cloud and MyCrestron and DM3.0 which offers a reliable, scalable platform, for efficient distribution of video and audio. Pro Display's 70” mirror screen definitely caught my attention. The mirrorvision multi-touch display features an anti-glare screen and when switched off, looks and works like a normal mirror. When the screen is switched on the images magically appear through the optical mirror TV glass. With touch capabilities it becomes an interactive tool for information or anything you can think of. Retail stores are a good fit for this solution. Jupiter Systems was of course most recently purchased by InFocus. I must admit - the two companies complement each other so well that within months of the acquisition announcement in October, they already had solutions at ISE showcasing how the respective companies’ solutions can work together seamlessly. When the announcement was made, it was highlighted that this acquisition would enable InFocus to provide end-to-end collaboration solutions and become the single provider for customers’ collaboration technology needs. This was evident at the booth where InFocus Canvas Touch all-in-one endpoint touch display combined InFocus capacitive-touch 4K display with Jupiter Canvas CRS-4K, enabling teams to collaborate with remote colleagues running Canvas on mobile devices, laptops, desktops, and video walls.

Also announced during ISE was the appointment of Brady O. Bruce as InFocus Chief Marketing Officer. One of my favourite people in the industry, Brady was of course the VP of Marketing and Strategic Alliance at Jupiter. “InFocus is evolving into a global force that transforms the way people connect,” said InFocus CEO Mark Housley. “We are assembling an accomplished team to accelerate these efforts, and I can think of no better person than Brady to lead our global marketing. He is an industry-recognized executive with deep international experience, along with direct and long-term experience in unified communication and collaboration (UCC) market development, branding and technology - most recently through his successful tenure at Jupiter Systems. I am very pleased to have him onboard to lead our marketing team as we grow and redefine our brand.” Gefen is, if you are not aware, now part of Core Brands. At ISE, the company previewed its upcoming EXTUHD600 Series of 600 MHz HDMI Distribution Products. This new product family takes the HDMI 2.0 platform to its highest level by enabling AV distribution at full specification of 4K 60 Hz at 4:4:4 colorspace, along with HDR support. The product line consists of the EXTUHD600-12 1:2 Splitter, EXT-UHD600-14 1:4 Splitter, EXTUHD600-18 1:8 Splitter, EXT-UHD600-41 4x1 Switcher, and EXT-UHD600-44 4x4 Matrix. All products are compliant with the latest HDCP 2.2 protocol as well as HDCP 1.4. 7.1 channels of LPCM and HBR (High Bit Rate digital audio and HDR are passed through. HDR (High Dynamic Range) delivers greater contrast between light and dark areas of a video image, resulting in tremendous improvement in picture quality and colour depth.
This huge LED Screen caught not just my attention but all those who passed by the LANG booth. This 432” 8K4K Screen is made up of Leyard TW1.2 box panels featuring 1.2mm pixel pitch with a resolution of 7680x4320px @ 60fps – it was simply stunning with its 5.4m in height and 9.6m in width display. The technically challenging set-up was done within two days. Oh and it would be remiss of me if I do not highlight the LG Booth which showcased OLED displays and the World's first 0.9mm even bezel videowall.

Alternate Realities Virtual Reality Is Here To Stay This Time.

hots have been fired. Whether you like it or not, it seems Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) are here to stay. Predicted as one of the most disruptive technologies in this decade, analysts forecast that more than 24 million devices will be sold in 2018¹.
According to industry analyst firm CCS Insight, VR and AR have now reached a tipping point after years of development. It is estimated that more than 12 million VR headsets will be sold in 2017. Although VR and AR are essentially two different types of technologies, the potential is immense for both as each delivers a niche visual experience.
Realities Explained Virtual Reality
Also referred to as immersive reality or artificial reality, VR is a computer simulated environment created in the digital realm. Sometimes it simulates a physical place in the real world or an imagined world that allows the user to interact with it. VR technology can artificially create sensory experience such as sight, touch, sound, and smell. There are two forms of VR: semi-immersive and fully immersive. The first is often constructed using projection technology in an enclosed room, while the latter uses a VR headset to ‘immerse’ the user in the virtual world via sight.
Augmented Reality
Also referred to as mediated reality, AR is a fusion of the real world and the digital world by overlapping visual experience between real-life and digital realm. Open and partly immersive, computer-generated sensory graphics are superimposed onto or integrated with the visuals you see in the physical world, modifying/enhancing one's view of reality. Smart phones and smart glasses are often used as a medium to overlay data and rendered images onto physical objects and real-life environments.

When Facebook acquired Oculus Rift in 2014, expectations for VR and AR ran high as several technology giants soon followed suit to make huge investments in the area. Some notable firms include Google (for Google Glass); Sony (with Project Morpheus); HTC – who has a partnership with Valve; and Samsung, who had worked with Oculus to produce the company's first VR Gear for Samsung smartphones. In the AR realm, Epson launched the Moverio smart glasses at CES 2014, while IT giant Microsoft announced its first holographic computer – the HoloLens – in early 2015, officially marking the beginnings of Age Of Realities. Two years on, in 2016, we see investments coming to fruition. Starting with Facebook’s first consumer version of Oculus Rift scheduled to ship later this year, Sony also announced that its first VR headset for PlayStation which will be out in the same year too. Concurrently, Intel has also announced its AR headset plans and Epson also stepped up on its smart glasses development with Moverio BT-300 due to release in late 2016 with several major improvements.

Billion-Dollar Industry
Indisputably, gaming and VR films are top applications for VR. Citing CCS Insight¹, video, entertainment and user-generated technology are also helping to drive its adoption. But besides the consumer market, what potential does VR has for commercial businesses? Eugene Goh, Vice President & Head, IT & Mobile of Samsung Electronics Singapore, reasoned that businesses can embrace VR as a cost effective way of developing and delivering a product or service. “The vivid nature of VR allows business to do away with actual set-ups, allowing their customers to have a remote yet realistic experience without being physically present... The added bonus is how VR can provide an intriguing experience,” said Eugene. In contrast, AR are quickly gaining traction with various vertical markets such as Logistics, Support, Design, Medicine and Education. As of today, Europe is believed to be the largest test bed of AR, with numerous blue-chip companies across all sectors evaluating its capabilities.

Not Just Games
Ben Wood, CCS Insight’s Chief of Research observed: “... Companies have realised augmented reality can be used to increase productivity and cut costs. Over the next two years we’re going to see the technology move out of trials into full-scale deployments. Companies that embrace augmented reality will gain a competitive advantage,” While the focus on gaming and entertainment has not changed (gamers rejoice!), it is evident that enterprises and corporations are beginning to see the value of VR and AR to improve their training and work processes. “(Imagine) a home tour of a show flat instead of a physical setup in real estate, a five-minute tour around the city in the comforts of your hotel room before deciding on your day’s itinerary, catch the latest fashion shows with models walking down the runway, cheer for your favourite team from the soccer pitch, or trying on new outfits in a retail fashion store,” Eugene enthuses. “The possibilities are limitless.” Additionally, a large AR user base would also be a major revenue source for TV/film, enterprise, advertising, and consumer apps. E-commerce businesses such as Amazon and Alibaba will have a new platform to sell to a mass audience.
Content Is Key
VR headsets and smart glasses are cool and all, but ultimately they are just mediums to deliver content in a different way. With Facebook launching 360 video and a series of VR games later this year (most probably to complement its Oculus VR gear launch), content is another key factor to consider to make the VR/AR adoption much more seamless.

“As with any new medium/platform, to make VR grow as an industry, content will play a significant role to determine why would people use VR and how quickly will people pick up VR in the near future,” said Jeff Zhen, Co-Founder of Hiverlabs, a VR content producer based in Singapore. As VR covers a wide range of genres and applications, from entertainment, to education, training, tourism, property and more, creating content for VR application can be challenging especially if you also take into account that it is only in recent years that the technology has picked up. “VR is still very new to consumers and developers. As we develop VR content, we have to think about when and how will people access VR content,”explains Jeff. “The key challenge we feel in making VR content is not only the technical challenges like maintaining a high display framerate, quality of graphics, intuitive user interfaces, etc, but also the actual use case scenario of a specific VR content.” According to Jeff, there are numerous problems faced by VR companies at this early stage and the industry developers are still exploring how to solve real problems and get effective results with VR.

the VR devices fails to completely fool our vestibular and proprioceptive systems (the sensory systems responsible for balance, spatial orientation and bodily positions), it causes discrepancies between the motion perceived from the screen and the actual motion of the user’s head and body. In short, simulator sickness is developed when what our eyes see does not match how our heads move. Symptoms of simulator sickness include dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting and other discomforts. Though it is said that simulator sickness decreases with repeated exposure there is still a minority of 3-5 per cent who will never get used to it. On the other hand, privacy issues are also another concern for the industry, with Google Glass raising a lot of questions from privacy advocates. But on the bright side, some VR developers have already claimed that they have come up with motion sickness-free devices, while AR developers are treading more carefully than ever with their developments. On the AR side, Epson has also been aggressively pushing for more content producers and software developers to create apps for their Moverio smart glasses. With a robust, informative site dedicated specially for developers and an expert team of email support, the company recognizes that the fastest way to push for adoption will be interesting content.
Coupled with the help of tech enthusiasts and AR/VR fanatics pushing for more adoption, the future of AR/VR may look uncertain at first but it’s definitely heading to where it wants to be. Now, conducting a virtual meeting using VR technology doesn’t sound like such a far-fetched idea isn’t it?
Just like how Apple's iPhone burst onto the smartphone scenes in 2007 with a wide array of interesting apps, the rate of VR and AR adoption and acceptance will also depend on how creative and novel the content is and the kind of experience it can bring to its users.

Digitalizing Real-Life Experiences Epson Moverio enriches visual experience with Augmented Reality (AR)
S
ince the introduction of Google Glass in 2013, Augmented Reality (AR) came onto the tech scenes offering numerous opportunities and possibilities.
Since AR has something to do with visuals and display, how can our proAV industry not get involved? In 2014, we saw leading projector major Epson, waded into the smart glasses scene with Moverio BT-200. Designed to change how you perceive and experience the world around you, the Moverio smart glasses is the first and only Android-based binocular see-through smart glasses. To learn more about the AR experience Moverio brings, I recently tested Moverio BT-200 at Epson Singapore office and live to tell the tale. Here are excerpts...
From Projection to AR
I admit, I have high expectations for AR. As a fan of Sci-Fi movies like Minority Report and Matrix, I always wonder if that kind of technological advancements will ever come true in real life So when I was assigned to do this Epson Moverio experience, I was psyched. The team at Epson was very helpful and my request to test the Moverio BT-200 was quickly approved. For many of us in the proAV trade, Epson is a familiar name. As a leading projector manufacturer,
the company certainly caught some attention when it announced the release of Moverio in 2014. So what is the motivation behind the development of Moverio? “Moverio is like an offshoot of what we are doing. As a company, Epson has a history of making micro devices, and in Moverio we are combining sophisticated AR technology with micro-display technologies and optical design to create a wearable device,”
said Siew Jin Kiat, Regional General Manager, Inkjet & Laser Printer, Visual Instrument – Business Unit, Epson Singapore. “With Moverio, we hope it can enhance productivity and work processes across industry sectors such as government, manufacturing, retail, healthcare and more.”

Turning it on was simple as the touch control console was easy to operate and navigate. Now, what I have in front of me was a mini projection on the glasses that is showing a menu of options of what I can do. Using the touch console in my hand, I can control the cursor on-screen and to hover it to the programme I want to open easily.
The Xperience
Before the experience began, I was first shown a promotional video of the Moverio so that I have a rough idea of what to expect. The video I saw demonstrated how quickly a repair and maintenance staff can carry out his work on a cruise ship with the use of Moverio. The head-worn device is able to pinpoint the problem seamlessly and quickly offer a suitable solution. The process looks so effortless and the visuals were incredible, making me really excited to try! Though it is called 'smart glasses', mind you, this is still a piece of technology disguising as a fashion accessory. When I put it on initially, the device feels a little heavy and width a bit too wide for my face. Because I was wearing glasses, I took it off so that I have a better fit (Note: This is a trial unit, so it doesn’t have any optical adjustments.) It took me some time to adjust as it keeps sliding off my face and when I was done, I had to keep my head still so that it stays in place. Keeping my head steady, I listened for instructions to turn on the device using the Android-based console which is connected to the glasses. This is another unique feature of Moverio where a majority of its computing power is located in a separate device and not within the glasses itself. According to Epson, this console gives Moverio its 6-hour operation, 8GB internal memory and drivers for Dolby Digital sound.
Voilá! The programme is on and this is supposed to show me some AR wonders. I look across the room to test it, but then I realised that the images projected on my display did not fully overlay onto the real-life visual in front of me. I am guessing because the frame size was too big for me so I was unable to fully view the image from both of the 960x540 transparent glasses to see the whole AR effect. Hmm... Optical tech seems to have an issue with me. Moving on, I was then handed a demo booklet by the team where an AR overlay was already designed based on it. While staring at a blank space in the booklet, a digital canvas suddenly pops up on-screen and I can see a 3D model sitting on it. It looks as if it is really inside the booklet. Very interesting... At the same time, you can also watch videos, play games, navigate with Moverio without losing sight of the physical world. There are apps stored in the device that allows you to do so.
Key Challenges Ahead
When asked what are some current key challenges for Moverio, Jin Kiat replied saying that the current Moverio is not yet a complete product with several improvements coming up. “The design and form factor needs more work. Ideally, we should be able to shrink it down further and it should look

more like a normal pair of glasses,” he remarked. I agreed, the BT-200 does feel bulky and more can be done to improve the projected images as well it tends to look a little washout in very bright light. There are definitely certain technological limitations to overcome to make Moverio more productive. But with the new BT-300¹ coming out later this year with all sorts of improved specs that includes OLED display, wider colour spectrum projection and a 5MP camera, the future of Epson Moverio looks bright ahead.
Business Opportunities
Primarily designed for vertical markets and industrial use, Epson Moverio target audience consists of corporate and manufacturing businesses where AR can be used to enhance work processes. But how about our SIs? What does Moverio and its AR technology mean to them? “SIs can use this opportunity to showcase what they can do for their clients, especially if they have been requested to do something that showcases immersive experiences. The Moverio can do that,” said Jin Kiat. “For corporate organizations or enterprises, Moverio can change the way training is delivered, or operations being carried out.” Besides corporates, Epson is also in touch with government agencies, software developer and content producers to create interesting content and app for the Moverio Apps Market. SI Asia caught up with Ronni Guggenheim, General Manager at Atlona on the company’s upcoming developments. As the market geography of Asia Pacific continues to grow from strength to strength, we see more manufacturing multinationals seeking their inroads into it - the most recent and most notable being that of AV gear major Atlona Technologies. Talk to Ronni Guggenheim, the energetic General Manager of Atlona International, and one will find some new-sounding terminology that will excite any proAV folk. Though based in Zurich, Ronni looks after the company's markets outside of the US. From a growth-driven startup-ist and disrupter in online and mobile media markets, Ronni's 25 years of experience to building Atlona's global footprint has come a long way through a diverse technology spectra ranging from Pro-AV, KVM, Command & Control and Digital Signage.
To share some excerpts: SI Asia: Tell us about Atlona’s genesis, evolution through the years of journey, and its present standing on global stage… RONNI: Atlona was founded by the Khayn brothers, both immigrated from Russia to California and started selling ProAV gear literally from their garage 13 years ago. Today, Atlona employs around 70 persons globally, with a strong footprint in the US, Europe and Asia. Atlona is one of those ‘American Dream’ stories, and I am proud to state that the entrepreneurial spirit, the ‘know where you are coming from’ is still very strong in the company and the executive team is working hard to maintain it as its core DNA. One year ago, Atlona took the decision to expand its global footprint and establish its own presence in key markets. While we have been only two persons on the international team one year ago, now we have our own offices in Latin America, various key markets in Europe, India and Hong Kong, with a total team surpassing 20 persons.
SI Asia: What, according to you, has been the most path-breaking technology innovation from Atlona? How has it impacted the global markets? RONNI: Atlona today is one of the leading vendors for HDBaseT-based solutions. We were one of the earliest adopters of HDBT. Today, HDBBaseT is mainstream and found in every important deployment. The other USP we have is what we call ‘value engineering,’ i.e. accurately identifying the needs of the customer -for example a huddle roomand develop a concise solution for that space, with no bells and whistles, but all what is really required. This value engineering results in competitive pricing and the perception of customers that they buy exactly what is required. Today, we observe that many other vendors are following us in our approach, some in a subtle manner, some other with blunt copies. Obviously, this confirms our approach and we feel we have impacted the market and will keep doing so.

strategies. The cultural gaps can be huge and not over-estimated enough, so we need local people to get the horse power of ‘being global, acting local’ to the street.
SI Asia: Training and market awareness is one big thing on the agenda of everyone in this line. What’s Atlona’s take?

SI Asia: What according to you is driving global AV markets today? What role does Atlona see for itself in it?
SI Asia: How, according to Atlona, the global markets in the domain have changed over the years- technologywise and geography-wise?
RONNI: For more than 10 years now, we have been talking about the convergence of AV and IT, and it has not happened yet. I still have my doubts if it will ever happen, although the majority of solutions in the market have some kind of networking components. While there will be winners and losers of the integration of both worlds, I truly believe there will be a new breed of specialists emerging, focusing on specific use cases and vertical integration, such as meeting spaces, auditoriums, event media, etc.
RONNI: Let me start with geography: the market powers are shifting. The APAC region will surpass the US market in terms of size next year, hence our investments in India and Hong Kong. Market-wise, we believe there will be more consolidation coming down the road, with the big players acquiring smaller specialist vendors, in particular classical ProAV manufacturers buying IP in the digital and networked fields.
Atlona’s future in this space is to keep its focus on vertical use cases and offering specific ‘value engineered’ solutions, recognizing trends earlier than the competition and tie up closely with the main players in respective markets. We also strongly feel IP-enabled technology will play a major role in times to come and we will surely be one of the leaders in that space.
SI Asia: Where do you see Asia Pacific in terms of both? What markets you see as the most promising and what as challenging- why? RONNI: As mentioned earlier, APAC is a main focus of our activities. We want to be in the market, with our own feet on the ground, close to our partners and integrators, being able to execute our support excellence and direct touch
RONNI We launched few years ago the ‘Atlona Advantage’ programme, which includes many perks for our partners. Training and certification is a key element of our strategy and the main pillar of that programme. One of our first hires in the field is usually a field trainer, we run one of the most sophisticated e-learning platforms in the market, and maintain a big team of TSS engineers in charge of training as well as project support and certified solutions design. We want our partners feel comfortable selling and specifying our solutions. Admittedly, knowledge transfer is a key ingredient.
SI Asia: How does Atlona look into the future- near and farther, say 10 years? RONNI: We will stay humble, our vision as outlined above will remain the same. We will invest a lot of efforts to maintain the DNA of the company and stay a “family.” Atlona will be a major innovation driver in our segment, however, always solid, and down to earth, without high-risk experiments. Malaysia with a population of 30.3 million has a global ranking of 29th in terms of Economic Freedom, according to 2016 Index of Economic Freedom - Malaysia1. This is a drop from recent years. The country unfortunately has been in the press for all the wrong reasons of late. The sentiments amongst its citizens has also been in the negative overall. There is no doubt that there is much potential in Malaysia and hopefully sooner rather than later calm will return to its political affairs, which will then drive the economy more aggressively. The AV industry too has felt the impact as can be seen from our first graph where 73.3% of our respondents have suggested little or flat growth.

Providing independent developers the tools to promote, optimize and monetize the apps they developed, the Tel Aviv-based company has had over 150 million downloads of its own brands, including IncrediMail, Molto, PhotoJoy, SweetIM, and Smilebox. Yet, its main mission is to help other software developers earn money from the new applications they produce. The company has been so successful that they recently moved into a new 7,000-square meter headquarters- more than double the size of their old office. The Ram Goldberg Architects designed the spacious new facility which comprises a 40-room conference centre; collaboration rooms of various sizes; videoconferencing rooms; a state-of-the-art boardroom; and an impressive auditorium where the company’s employees can gather. While whole facility, besides its appealing architectural design – an ingenious use of wood, glass and metal – features a very impressive audio-visual systems integration addressing a vast array of functions, the central aspect of all that is its end-toend employment of Crestron technology - including Crestron

How it all started

Project Challenge
“The Perion project was very complex for several reasons. First, there were several systems that required full integration between them. Second, the time table to design systems and complete the installation was tight, requiring careful planning and a reliable solution,” explains Nadav Kishony, Procurement Manager at Perion who led the project together with the company’s Vice-President-IT. "At the beginning of process, we realized that the Crestron solution was preferable to other solutions in almost every parameter, but the key parameter that eventually tipped the scales is the fact that Crestron was the only company offering a holistic solution that met all our requirements, for all rooms, and all the multimedia systems across our company, he elaborates. “From a purchasing perspective, dealing with one integrator and one manufacturer simplified the entire process, and ultimately, saved us money and resources.” Rishon LeZiyyon, Israel-based consulting firm TripleT was taken onboard to manage infrastructure and low voltage systems,
According to him, the advantage they bring to the equation when they are involved so early in the process is very significant. Not only their team is knowledgeable of current technologies, it also knows what technologies are on its roadmap over the next year or more. “We also have engineers working on what’s coming next – technologies that haven’t been announced, but those we know will make an impact on the way people live and work,” Brookstein elaborates. “When necessary, we involve our engineering team in a project to test the feasibility of a solution or alternatively make a unique fit for client requirements. This way, we provide a comprehensive solution for demanding projects, often saving the customers’ money.”
The Install & Integration
At the heart of the project lies the advanced Crestron 3-Series Control Systems (CP3) that manage the entire project meeting rooms, including as many as 30 small meeting rooms. Awardwinning DigitalMedia Presentation Systems (DMPS-300-C) are employed in the medium-sized conference rooms. Executive meeting room and auditorium systems in tune with their scalability requirement are powered by DigitalMedia matrices with 4K and UHD support. All the rooms used cable boxes representing the Crestron Connect It (TT-100) series or the FlipTop series integrated with screen and Cable Retractors (FTTS600). A TSS-752 touch screen adorns the outside of each room displaying the availability of the room, as well as its schedule

Crestron decorative speakers – in-wall or pendant from the ceiling – deliver audio to all the rooms, and background music for the recreational areas and auditorium. “One of the key challenges for us, having accompanied the project from beginning to end successfully, was staying on the three-month schedule,” recalls Ofer Oz, Chief Executive Officer of TripleT. “The fact that all the products are made by the same manufacturer allowed integration to occur faster and more seamlessly,” he says. That is the only way we were able to meet the almost impossible schedule.” All AV and lighting systems in the projects are managed by Crestron Enterprise Management software solution – Crestron Fusion RV. Fusion helps IT staff monitor all systems in realtime, and get immediate notifications if there are any system issues in any room. The software has a Help Desk Remote configuration function so anyone using the system can receive support in a timely manner. Fusion system interfaces with Perion’s cloud-based Exchange system and enables operation of the rooms according to the timetable of the room. The
meeting host can set the room and system up based on their needs in advance of the meeting. Five minutes before the meeting starts, the lights can dim to the appropriate level, the projector and screen can power on, so staff can focus on presenting instead of worrying about the technology. “All of our office space was designed as an open space, so that each employee including the CEO does not have a private room. Therefore, the meeting rooms are very expensive resources for us. Managing them in an efficient way is a crucial requirement,” says David Alfasy, Vice- President of IT at Perion. “With Fusion, we were able to provide a complete solution for managing our meeting rooms. The system, which interfaces with Microsoft Office 365 platform, enables complete management of all conference rooms.” If a meeting is scheduled and no one enters the room, the Crestron occupancy sensors mark the meeting as 'No Show' and the room immediately becomes available and accessible to the rest of the company's employees. In addition, the Crestron Fusion software also warns Perion IT staff about the problems in the rooms proactively in times of need.

“At our previous office, we used to joke that every meeting had to start with an IT employee setting up the system in the room, even for a simple PowerPoint presentation. The degree of frustration on part of the meeting organizer and attendees was just tremendous,” says Nadav Kishony, the Procurement Manager. Crestron’s CaptureHD-PRO is incorporated in the auditorium and boardroom, enabling full HD-quality recording of presentations. The recordings are then transmitted with the lecturer image (picture in picture) to a centralized server of the company for archiving. Kishony recalls a particular instance of a board meeting when they were asked to present figures regarding the nature of the use of meeting rooms, in order to make wise decisions about how they are being used. “We’ve used Crestron Fusion reporting and within minutes we were able to see how the rooms were used, when, and for how long,” Nadav reveals, “it was the first time we could really tell how rooms were being utilized. We’re now able to make decisions and adjustments based on real data, not just assumptions.” Shay Kadmon, the CTO at Barkai who carried out the project, notes, “This is one of the most complex and the most beautiful projects I am involved in. For us as integrators, the fact that all system components are of the same manufacturer makes it considerably easier to complete the project quickly and at the highest professional level. Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has become a leader in collaborative learning with the completion of the Hive learning hub at their Singapore campus.

ocated within the South Spine of the campus’ new eight-story building, the Hive learning hub features a flexible lecture facility and classrooms designed on a flipped pedagogy model. The premise behind this model is to have students study the lesson in advance and then use lecture time for interactive learning among small groups as well as between the instructor and the class. Innovative technology is vital to support this modern approach to education. After evaluating various solutions offered by industry leaders, the integrator, 01 Computer of Singapore, selected Extron XTP Systems® and Pro Series control products to implement the flipped classroom model.
XTP Systems Enable Flipped Classroom Model For the 56 classrooms within the Hive, the basic design is the same. The room
layout provides seating for six students at five, six, or 10 tables, depending on room size, and includes a flat panel display by each table. The main display is a projection system. The lectern, referred to as the Teacher Console, offers local sources, AV connectivity for portable devices, and control of the installation. Each classroom uses an XTP System for AV signal routing.
The University selected the XTP System for many reasons. The modularity and performance of the XTP CrossPoint® matrix switchers provided support for digital and analog sources and ensured high quality signal distribution regardless of the type of portable device brought into the classroom, including both digital and analog sources.

Also mounted within the console rack is the Extron IN1508 presentation switcher and a recording system. The eight-input switcher is used to scale presented and shared images to a resolution of 1920x1200 for delivery to the recorder. The seamless switching capability eliminated the possibility of visible jumps or other issues that could impact the quality of the presentations and recording. Currently, the material is being captured for archival purposes only.
There was also familiarity with many of its included digital technologies, which allowed for implementation of comprehensive EDID and HDCP strategies for managing the diverse equipment used within the Hive. Additionally, the capability to power remote endpoints over the same CATx cable used for AV and control signals streamlined integration by reducing equipment needs and installation time per room. These capabilities led NTU to select XTP Systems as the best solution for their flipped classroom model. Each classroom has an Extron XTP CrossPoint 1600 rack mounted within the teacher console, and is populated with an appropriate mix of input and output boards to accommodate the size of the space. As an example, the XTP CrossPoint matrix switcher in a five-table classroom is configured as 12x8. It supports the classroom devices controlled from the console plus transmissions to and from the student tables. The installation standardized on XTP CP 4i twisted pair boards for support of all inputs within the system. This configuration gave an optimized approach that supported the widest possible variety of signal types as well as provided flexibility to incorporate specific transmitters to support the varying number of source devices in different locations.
The team downloaded XTP System Configuration Software for setup and commissioning of the system. The complete view of the entire system from a single window and the ability to make selections from individually tabbed sections simplified the tasks of configuring endpoints, setting EDID, assigning remote power, and making I/O selections. The Backup Systems Settings feature came in very handy since it allowed configurations to be duplicated throughout the University across same sized rooms. Afterwards, the software was loaded onto the IT computers, and used for real-time system monitoring and remote classroom assistance.
TouchLink Control at the Teacher Console
The console includes an HDMI laptop, a desktop computer with VGA video and audio output, a document camera with VGA output, AV connectivity for personal source devices, along with a touchpanel for AV system control. The Extron XTP T VGA extends AV signals from the desktop computer, embedding any audio into the XTP® signal stream for transmission to the matrix switcher. An Extron XTP T USW 103 three input transmitter is used to switch and extend signals from the visualizer and auxiliary inputs. It is configured for auto-switching for simplified operation.
To encourage participation and collaboration, students needed to not only hear the instructor but also understand classmates asking questions and sharing information from other areas of the room. Installed in the same rack is the sound system that includes the Extron MVC 121 Plus Three Input Stereo Mixer with DSP. In addition to supporting the recording system, the mixer sends audio signals to the Extron MPA 401 amplifier for distribution to an appropriate number of speakers for the space. “From previous experience, we knew that the MPA 401 was reliable and can be on for long periods without generating excessive heat,” said Loh. Extron SI 3CT LP full-range ceiling speakers provide high quality sound reproduction within each room. The

Global Configurator™ Professional Software to configure the touchpanel and the rack-mounted Extron IPCP Pro 550 control processor. According to one team member, the powerful advanced configuration features of GC Pro combined with the speed and flexibility of the IPCP Pro processor allowed quick examination and assignment of button action conditions. This further streamlined system integration within the 56 classrooms.
XTP T USW 103 Switcher at Each Student Table
AV system design team selected this particular model for several reasons. The conical baffle offers 170° dispersion, eliminating beaming directly under the speakers and ensuring consistent sound levels across the listening area. The 4" back can on this plenum rated speaker allowed each unit to be installed into the shallow air return space above the ceiling without the need for a special enclosure, which decreased project costs. Installation of the SI 3CT LP also meant fewer speakers needed per classroom. The original design specified an Extron TLP 710 TouchLink® touchpanel mounted to the console; however, based on the projected future needs of the University, the team installed the latest TouchLink Pro version instead. The Extron TLP Pro 720M provides faster processing and more available memory than the originally scoped model. The instructors also appreciate the automatic adjustment of screen brightness when room lighting is dimmed. The interface on the touchpanel’s 7" touch screen, customized for the flipped classroom model, and the contemporary design of the TLP Pro 720M complement the sophisticated style of the Hive as well. The Extron ECP Certified members of the integration team used
Each table offers AV connectivity for portable devices. To share content, a Samsung® DB40D 40" Slim Direct-Lit LED display is mounted on the closest wall. An XTP T USW 103 switcher is mounted beneath each table to support students with HDMI and VGA source devices. An Extron two-button controller connects to the XTP T USW switcher, making it easy for students to select the desired HDMI or VGA input. For supplemental instruction and to effectively share content from a particular table with the rest of the class, the room includes a projection system that uses a ceiling-mounted Sony® VPL SW630 ultra short throw projector. To support room displays, an Extron XTP R HDMI receiver is mounted to the back of each flat panel display and an XTP scaling receiver is secured to the projector mount. The panels accept 1920x1080, and the XTP SR HDMI scales images to the projector’s native resolution of WXGA (1280x800). Both models are used for extension of AV and control signals throughout the room from the matrix switcher. “The low profile of the XTP receivers allowed us to hide them behind the flat panels, which kept the installation neat and less vulnerable to vandalism,” Loh commented. The farthest destination endpoint from the XTP CrossPoint matrix switcher is approximately 130 feet (40 meters), well within the 330 feet (100 meters) transmission distance capability of
XTP extenders. The bidirectional RS232 control ports on the transmitters, receivers, and I/O boards facilitated a simple way to insert control for monitoring and operation of equipment within the room. This design choice reduced the number of independent cables needed in each classroom, further streamlining the design and integration.
Innovation that Inspires
NTU spared no expense in constructing and equipping this technologically advanced building. Response to the Hive from the students and the staff has been equally enthusiastic. Standardization of room layout and AV system design fosters a high level of comfort and familiarity, and it also enables the IT staff to quickly troubleshoot a system and provide support to those new to the facility. The 56 classrooms are in constant use. Extron XTP Systems and professionalgrade control products have contributed to the complete success of the University's flipped classroom model, enhancing the scholastic experience within the Hive learning hub at Nanyang Technological University. “Extron always has the right product mix and provides excellent support, helping us with equipment or simply answering a question,” remarked Loh. “From the earliest phase through system commissioning, Extron was by our side.” www.extron.com

Victorian Police Forensic Audio Unit Choose JBL Monitors JBL M2 Master Reference Monitors Takes The Spotlight

elbourne’s new $230 million City West police station in Docklands houses nearly 1,500 staff, united from multiple locations and divisions.
With over 240 rooms fitted out with audio visual equipment, the facility boasts everything from a simple screen with automated control in the lunch room to a 28 screen video wall in the main operation centre that can display 16 individual sources at once. The building is also the new home of the Forensic Audio Unit, who are tasked with analysis and enhancement of audio recordings to solve and prevent crimes. Ry Wilton, Audio Visual Commissioning Technician at Programmed Electrical Technology headed up the installation team, making the Police’s AV design a reality. Part of that was delivering a reference-quality monitoring solution for their main forensic audio studio, which was built to exacting standards. “Everything had to be soundproofed,” reports Ry. “The walls were up to 285mm thick with alternating layers of wood and metal so the studio was also immune to radio interference." He explained, "We had to get all of our cabling and services in before the walls went up, or we wouldn’t have gotten through.
They’ve installed a mixing desk that routes all their sources; computers, DVD, CD and proprietary recorders. They can play any format of audio. The studio is an audiophile’s dream! For monitoring, they needed something that could be both extremely loud but also crystal clear.” The Forensic Audio Unit is tasked with enhancement and analysis of a wide variety of sources, including speech and ambient sound. Their monitoring solution must provide the most accurate reproduction possible, with no colour or artefacts added. Having used and loved their legendary, 1980s era JBL 4430 studio monitors at their old facility in Macleod, the audio team

In choosing new monitors for City West, they decided to step forward into the future while keeping part of their heritage, and chose a pair of JBLs flagship M2 Master Reference monitors, powered by a Crown I-Tech 4x3500HD power amp. With no less than five new patents in their 2216Nd Differential Drive Woofer, and one each for the D2 Dual HF Driver, Image Control Waveguide, and Bass Reflex Port, the M2s are the pinnacle of JBL’s long history at the forefront of studio monitor technology. The M2s deliver an astonishing frequency response of 20 Hz to 40 kHz, and an extraordinary 123 dB maximum SPL that more than meets Victoria Police’s stringent performance requirements. The M2s are run bi-amped by the Crown I-Tech 4x3500HD, which delivers 4000W per channel at 4 ohms (1 kHz 20 ms burst). Each channel features a complete complement of OMNIDRIVEHD Processing, including the acclaimed LevelMAX Limiter Suite, and support for linear phase FIR filters. The often unpredictable dynamic nature of the recordings analysed by Forensic Audio means that they require monitors that can handle sudden peaks at high volume without distressing their drivers.
Equally important is local support of the product, provided in abundance by Jands. The Forensic Audio Unit’s M2s were personally set-up and tuned by Jands’ audio specialist Andrew Crawford , ensuring that room response was completely flat. Ry Wilton respects Jands attention to detail; “I was really impressed watching Jands do the tuning,” he enthuses. “Andrew could tell from modelling and measurements before he even got to the studio where the reflective surfaces, such as the doors, were located. At one point, he corrected a monitor by a mere 2 ½ degrees, after checking acoustic measurements.” Back at the old Forensic lab at Macleod, the 30 year old JBL 4430s are still in use, and are part of Victorian Police history. Previous to their installation in Macleod, the 4430s were part of the Russel Street police headquarters. They are referenced in a book written by retired undercover police officer, relating his experience hearing an undercover recording he’d made played back through them and being astounded at the quality. At the end of their working life, they will most likely be retired with full honours to the Police Museum. www.jands.com.au

art of Indonesia's Smart City plan is being able to have critical information at the fingertips of its key Ministries. One of the ways this is being achieved is via the setting up of control rooms to monitor and take quick decisive actions when required. Thus the Ministry of Transportation located in Jakarta recently updated its NOC within its premises to help staff monitor and take decisive action when required. The Ministry of Transportation's Network Operation Centre monitors sea transport, including cargo vessels as well as other private and public sea vessels, across its 33 provinces. Indonesia is an archipelagic island country in South east Asia, lying between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. The video wall is able to show data tracking of vessels that our of range, or in trouble and even their path schedule.
What Were The Requirements?
The Ministry wanted a video wall that would offer high resolution and colour uniformity in addition to working on a LED light source, in relation to environmental issues. They had

also requested that the depth of the solution be only 35cm so that it fits into the control room. “The Microtiles met all their requirements and it offered a screen gap of only 1.3mm,” said Rudi Hidayat, CEO, V2 Indonesia, who were responsible for the supply, installation, integration and commissioning of the system.
The Challenge And The Solution
“As the incoming data characters are small, we needed higher pixel so that they can be seen clearly. Each MicroTile offers a resolution of 720 x 540 pixels. We had to customise the resolution to offer 720 x 2700 pixels. Thus our videowall configuration features a 5 x 13 columns, where each column had 5 MicroTiles enabling us to offer 720 x 2700 pixels per column,” said Rudi. Each MicroTile column is connected to a RGBlink scaler due to the custom resolution via a ECU thus ensuring optimal colour performance and auto balancing of the brightness. The ECU
is connected to a sensor that is found on each MicroTile to enable it to control each MicroTile colour and brightness to offer uniformity across the wall.
The Other Key Solutions
A TV One CorioMaster Video Wall Processor has been installed to handle all the the inputs and outputs. In this set-up the CorioMaster has 4 DVI input sources as well as one input source from a Hyundai Interactive Whiteboard that is installed within the room. The 84” 4K Hyundai Interactive Whiteboard serves its purpose for tactical meetings where images can be projected onto the MicroTiles videowall via the CorioMaster. A Crestron CP3 control system is at the heart of the installation to control all the AV equipment including the ceiling speakers, Door Access system as well as the lighting within the room. A Crestron touch control panel is also provided featuring preset layouts for the MicroTiles on top of all the other controls.

H
ow does one deliver top-quality images for use by senior government officials — on a refurbishment budget? This was the challenge set recently to Omnix International of Abu Dhabi, and they responded by specifying one of the first installations of dnp LaserPanels. The client was Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) in Abu Dhabi, UAE, whose meeting rooms needed refurbishment. MOFA’s existing supplier Omnix International was called in to advise on the AV system, with MOFA themselves wanting a large LCD display (measuring around 90” or more) with all the associated AV components and controls. High-quality images were essential to support the work of MOFA’s senior officials and visitors. However, since the budget was geared only to refurbishment, hitting the sweet spot between quality and price was essential. The equipment also had to operate reliably in day-to-day interactive use. The discussion about screens was based initially on a standard projector with lift and motorised screen, with MOFA wanting
economical LCD screens of at least 85” (with several market leading solutions under consideration). “We proposed a 100” dnp LaserPanel Touch instead. he Jabel Al-Ahmed International Stadium in Kuwait city, was named after Kuwait’s late Amir Sheik Jabel Al Ahmad Al Sahah. An iconic, and architectural gem in itself – designed by Weidleplan Consulting GmbH – the US$220 million-plus multipurpose stadium stands proudly in four sprawling levels with as many as 64,000 regular audience on top of 54 corporate boxes. It was renovated recently with a state-of-the-art audio-visual system, the hallmark of which, is a 135 square meters of video entertainment for soccer and athletic events. The video display solution, custom-developed by Brookings, South Dakota-based Daktronics, characterizes itself with two new HD LED video displays, and an additional auxiliary display.
"The new screens are of the most important, the best and the latest external displays to international courts at all levels of the Arabian Gulf and the Middle East area," said Ibrahim Ashkanani, Amiri Diwan project manager. "These new screens, with other integrated flourished high techs, are the new focus and enjoyment points, fascinating the fans and audiences in every game." Kuwait-based systems integrator Smartentity was taken onboard for the prestigious install. The two main displays measuring 8.78 meters high by 15.36 meters wide each, are the first in the Middle East to feature 10 millimeter line spacing using SMD 3-in-1 LED technology. Chadi El K Foury, Founder-Director of Smartentity, these displays incorporate industry-leading environmental protection while providing excellent image clarity and contract with wide angle visibility for a great view from every seat in the stadium. “The client wanted the best HD screen solution that befits the stadium class,” reasoned Chadi for choosing the particular solution. “We proposed 10-mm outdoor LED SMD, High Definition Screen from Daktronics as we were convinced that it’s the best (for the given situation).”

The Challenge
“Electromechanical part of the job was quite a good portion of it, where we had to do full electrical network with many DBS and PLC controls enhanced with electronic remote manageable breaker system, cooling and derange with water pumps etc.,” Chadi elaborates. “We had to move by air over 40 tons of pallets and equipment on express flights to meet the real tough dead line; more, moving it all in, and executing the job to perfection, racing against time, less than three months from start to finish.”
Going by the requirement of the install, it was indeed a demanding project. “It was quite challenging with extremely tight time schedule,” recalled Chadi, who led the AV design and install team. “It was not just about fixing screen modules next to each other; there was a civil part of the installation, which was a serious job to consider,” He continued, “We got a tilted and hanger-suspended structure from the tensioned roof cables; we had to be in constant contact and coordinate with the manufacturers of the canopy system, and tensioned roof steel structure, along with many other different international and local consulting agencies. This was indispensable to ensure that all the calculations and drawings for the weighing system and related matter came accurate and were risk free.” According to the integrator, the job wasn’t easy by any means. Due to the slanting shape of the structure, moving in not only the AV systems, but also the heavy support machinery all posed quite a challenge. The team had to ensure there will be no damage to the AV equipment while fixing it, and to also safeguard lives of people involved in the execution. All said, they could not afford to go wrong even by a fraction in terms of alignment and calibration of the systems. The SI had to work in perfect tandem with teams of over a dozen fields comprising civil, structural, logistics, LV, electrical & mechanical, heavy machinery, health and safety on one side, and design and programming, and project management team on the other.

More Than A Display
As part of the solution, the team also integrated the Spider Camera System, and Goal Control as well as the all-sports scoreboard system with the screens so that the screens will play all that, and also an integrated sporting multimedia. Variable content zoning allows the displays to show one large image or one to be divided into different sections to show any variety of live video, instant replay, statistics, game information, animations and sponsorship messages. The installation also features a complete primary and backup system to ensure that the system gave optimal operational excellence during any event. Daktronics’ solution also included its powerful Show Control System which provides a combination of display control software, world-class video processing, data integration and playback hardware that forms a user-friendly production solution. To be able to deliver the project smoothly and on-time, Chadi is glad to have Daktronic's tremendous support from the start. “Our partnership with Daktronics for this project has helped us overcome all these challenges; they had pushed the manufacturing process to their maximum limits, had their three manufacturing and assembly plants working in parallel to meet the deadline, and support the install process.” At the same time, LED display major, Daktronics, is equally happy to have been selected for the project. "Jaber Al-Ahmad was keen to have the latest and greatest LED display system for their venue," said Ahmad Dahmash, Daktronics Regional Manager. ollowing the acquisition in 2014 by City Football Group, reliable local and global communication became a key focus for Melbourne City FC, with the Melbourne office requiring regular dialogue with City Football Group’s offices in London and Manchester in the UK and NYCFC in the US.
“We needed a technology that would replace or complement our existing communications method of email, SMS and word of mouth, would be easy to operate, enable both local and global communications and could be used for both players and staff.”
Assessing their options, the club took a lead from the work done by their sister club, Manchester City, and investigated the use of Digital Signage as a way of interacting in a dynamic, effective and modern way.
Following a period of internal discussion and analysis of leading solutions the Tripleplay platform was selected and deployed at City Football Group’s Melbourne headquarters, linking to Tripleplay solutions implemented in both Manchester and New York allowing true global communications.

The Power of Converged Infrastructure

As the buzz about businesses and communications migrating into the domain of Convergence, increasingly makes its pitch, the AV world is given an alarm or two about the need to understand how the IT world is taking to the new horizon, and how the AV world needs to respond. SI Asia seeks to present an interesting aspect that might help the way AV can offer its solutions for a larger gain for all.
R
egardless of their size, sector or geography, most businesses have very similar goals. To enhance productivity, increase sales, create and launch new products and services, and enter new markets. The technology that enables them to achieve these goals weaves through the business in a complex, interdependent web of mobile devices, virtualised environments, CRM processes, networks and storage capability. Companies, and their IT teams in particular face a number of challenges when trying to optimise the way this internal digital web works. Compute, network and storage systems need to be able to accommodate simultaneously the demands of all these different digital technologies and applications as well as vast volumes of structured and unstructured data. In this environment the weaknesses of legacy or fragmented IT infrastructures soon reveal themselves. We believe passionately that business success in today’s digital economy requires an IT infrastructure that is flexible, scalable, predictable and manageable. This can sometimes be challenging to achieve, but the
integration of compute, network and storage into a single converged infrastructure makes a significant difference.
What A Business Really Needs From It
The list is a simple one: technology that lets employees do their jobs effectively and securely, wherever they may be; that enables fast, high-performance business operations; and that ensures everything works the way it needs to, regardless of what else is going on at the time. A converged infrastructure system helps a business to achieve all of this. It makes IT more agile, reduces the time and money spent on system maintenance and increases overall IT performance. Further, it makes IT staff more efficient and frees up their expertise to add value elsewhere. These benefits are real and measurable. A recent report by IDC, sponsored by VCE and based on interviews with 16 VCE customers explored the impact on a business of a converged IT infrastructure. Here’s what IDC found: • A near five-fold (4.6 times) increase in the number of apps the IT department was able to develop and deliver over a 12 month period; • A 41 per cent reduction in the amount of time spent simply keeping the IT lights on; • A marked acceleration (4.4 times) in getting new products and services to market; and • 96 per cent less downtime.

IDC predicts that IT departments will spend more than $10 billion this year on converged infrastructure systems, and up to $14.3 billion in 2018. The Need For Speed
As companies change, their underlying IT infrastructure needs to change as well. It has to become more flexible, scalable, and adaptable – and to be able to introduce changes quickly and effectively. IT departments need to accelerate their ability to deliver new applications, add new features and functionality, and to scale capability quickly — both up and down — as demands change. The IDC study confirmed that these needs can be met comprehensively by a converged infrastructure system that embraces the cloud. The cloud connection is particularly valuable as it enables integration with other cloud services such as databases and applications. This offers an extremely effective springboard for new business innovation.
No More Mundane Mondays
The benefits of a converged infrastructure aren’t just about getting servers online faster. The IDC study discovered that applications were deployed in a third of the time, and application development lifecycles were 55 percent faster. Further, IDC found that companies which used to spend three-quarters (78 percent) of their IT resources just keeping the lights on, cut that time to 46 percent. All of this translates into more productive IT staff who have the time to focus on better understanding end-user and business needs or to implement new projects and create new products.
This change of focus has far-reaching and positive implications for the training and professional development of IT staff. Converged infrastructures can resemble IT services more than hardware systems and for many professionals working in infrastructure that represents quite a change. The transition towards a new way of working should be seen as a valuable and welcome chance to upskill and bring professional careers up to date. The VCE Certified Professionals Program, for example, introduced in April 2014, helps IT professionals to develop the skills needed to design, deploy and manage converged infrastructure as a seamless, single environment. Every month, around 500 newly certified VCE converged infrastructure professionals go back to their companies, ready to change the world.
Robust Reliability
The customers interviewed by IDC reported a 96 percent reduction in downtime following the implementation of their converged IT infrastructure. This is all the more amazing because, typically, the more advanced the technology, the more difficult it is to maintain. There are those who argue that the introduction of a converged infrastructure can be fairly costly, at least at the start before the cost-savings and efficiencies start to kick in. But all these companies need to do is to put this in context by considering the financial, operational and even reputational impact of extended downtime.
IT Infrastructure Needs Converge To Support A World That Is Diverging
Converged infrastructure is here to stay. IDC predicts that IT departments will spend more than $10 billion this year on converged infrastructure systems, and up to $14.3 billion in 2018.
