ISE 2012 as many of you will know by now, lived up to its promise – bigger exhibition space, more exhibitors and over 40,000 visitors. For 2013 the organisers are extending the exhibition space to cater to the ever growing interest of manufacturers to participate. The only news that has gone contrary to the feel good factor of ISE was the withdrawal of participation from ISE and InfoComm International by AV giant Extron Electronics. The verdict is still out there if this decision by Extron will have an effect on the company itself and even the exhibition. I personally feel that exhibitions play an integral role in our industry. Yes you can get all the information you want on the Internet but I would not playdown the human factor – the personal touch, ability to discuss in depth face to face, hands-on feel for the equipment and importantly networking opportunities. In fact Extron Electronics has suggested that it will instead focus its efforts, staff, and resources on activities that directly benefit its customers, starting with additional training facilities and expanded customer support in the US and around the world. Obviously they too understand the importance of being in touch with the customers albeit them finding a different route to do just that.

Now on to another InfoComm success story. This year’s InfoComm India

InfoComm India goes from roadshow to main event in 2013 INDIA: After four years of going ‘on the road’, InfoComm India will become a main event in 2013, a move embraced by several exhibitors at the close of the 2012 Roadshow. InfoComm India 2013 will be held from 17-19 September 2013 at the Mumbai Exhibition Centre.

ProAV systems manufacturers participating in the InfoComm India Roadshows in 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2012 were ‘sold’ by the relatively untapped business potential in India which they have observed first-hand, as well as the excellent platform – and professionalism – offered by the trade show and its organizer.

InfoComm India grew cautiously from 10 exhibiting companies in 2008 to 24 in 2012, with total visitor traffic tripling from 500 to 1,569. These figures may seem modest but exhibitors were buoyed by the good mix of trade and end-user visitors, their professional seniority with strong decision-making influence, and their appetite for new technologies.

Many exhibitors felt ready to engage more actively in the India market.

Said Mayank Gupta, Director and Country Manager of AMX India, “InfoCommAsia has been playing a pioneering role in India to develop and educate the Indian AV industry.

Infocomm’s strategy to reach out to end clients through shows like this as well as ensuring systems integrators are up-to-date with technologies that AV manufacturers have to offer, has worked for us. We look forward to a more intensive effort by InfoComm to develop the India market.”

AMX has been a regular participant in InfoComm events around the world.

Another frequent exhibitor, Extron Electronics, is equally positive about prospects in India. Gary Tay, Extron’s Consultant Liaison Manager for Asia, noted: “Once again, InfoComm India 2012 is another great success. The show has provided increased awareness and knowledge in solutions available to the AV market and end users in India. I’m sure many more manufacturers will be keen to participate with a larger venue for next year’s event.”

Even new exhibitors felt the buzz and enthusiasm of the local market at InfoComm India. Terry Baldwin, Corporate Hospitality Director of Baldwin Boxall / DNH, which specializes in industrial and commercial loudspeakers, shared his experience in the 2011 Roadshow: “This was our first visit to India, so we didn’t really know what to expect. We found the locals to be very friendly and always willing to chat. Following this, we will have to decide whether to appoint a distributor or a number of systems integrators. We found all three venues to be busy with valid people.”

A local first-time exhibitor, Ind-Agiv Commerce Ltd, had this to add. “ We had a number of genuine enquiries and expect to convert these into sales. We were able to meet old colleagues and overall, build our company’s brand image amongst the international manufacturers,” said Amit Palekar, Head of Audio Visual Solutions.

“While the Roadshow has been a good start in addressing the Indian market, it is now time to have a three-day exhibition in one city. This will attract more vendors and more attendees,” said Dorothy Farris, VP Worldwide Sales of Jupiter Systems, which has booked for the 2013 Show, registering the company’s continued support for InfoComm India.

Panasonic to cease production of Sanyo branded projectors JAPAN: Panasonic Corporation has announced that following the completion of its acquisition of Sanyo Corporation on January 1, 2012 a new projector business unit has been formed. This now integrates R&D, Engineering, Manufacturing, Product Planning, Marketing bringing to market a stronger product range that better meets the needs of customers. With the establishment of this new business unit Panasonic has ceased production of Sanyo branded projectors as at the end of March 2012.

Panasonic commits that all Sanyo branded products will continue to carry the standard manufacturer warranty even if they are sold after the Sanyo brand is officially withdrawn from the market on 31st March 2012.

Arrangements are being made within the Panasonic group to ensure that all Sanyo warranties are provisioned and supported in the future. End-users who experience any problem with their Sanyo branded products during the warranty period should refer to their original supplier for advice.

INTERNATIONAL: The first ISE VTRON International Distributors Meeting 2012 (ISE-VIDM 2012) was held on 30th January 2012 at the Amsterdam Holiday Inn Hotel. In the first session of the meeting, a seminar entitled New Products Strategies – Video Wall was presented by VTRON senior channel sales manager, Alvis Kwok, describing the full range of V3 Platform of Video Wall models (V3U/ V3L series with V8 features). The New Products Strategies – IDB was presented afterwards by VTRON sales manager, Nicole Huang and Ada Bai, examining the market trend analysis and upcoming product roadmap. Supernova’s epic performance in Bangkok penthouse Deco 2000 were able to demonstrate the high quality of a movie picture, showing the accuracy of the colours, with perfect black level, as part of its seven-layer structure.

THAILAND: dnp denmark’s partner in Thailand, Deco 2000, has installed a 132in dnp Supernova Epic for a private client, in a luxury condominium penthouse overlooking Bangkok’s Chaopraya River.

The dnp display is the centrepiece of a total cinema package from Deco 2000, who had earlier provided a home theatre solution for the customer — a wealthy businessman — in a previous home.

“We suggested the dnp Epic for its fine gain and the fact that it is future proofed for 4K resolution,” said the company’s Wichai Pawitwatana. “Having had a good experience with our service in the past, the customer was confident in accepting our recommendation.

The client had specifically requested a curved screen on which to show exclusively HD movie content, and he was eager to compare the performance of the Epic alongside another market leader before making his decision. “The picture quality of the Supernova was simply better and we recommended the largest size possible to fit his room,” said Wichai.

Immersive Malaysian cinema uses Delta Media Servers from 7thSense Design MALAYSIA: In another landmark deployment of its Delta media-server technology, 7thSense Design announced that it has been a key supplier to the visitor centre of the Putrajaya Wetlands Park in Malaysia.

The largest man-made area of freshwater wetland in south-east Asia, Putrajaya Wetlands Park has been conceived as a protected natural habitat in which rare breeds of flora and fauna can establish themselves and flourish, without the threat of upheaval from other human activity. The Wetlands cover an area of over 200 hectares, and human access is carefully controlled.

Following a rebooking process that has resulted in more space than ever being reserved for the next Integrated Systems Europe, the show’s organisers have decided to make a part of Hall 8 of the Amsterdam RAI available to both new and existing exhibitors.

“This is not a decision we have taken lightly,” comments Mike Blackman, Managing Director, Integrated Systems Events.

“However, the response from exhibitors to our 2012 show has been overwhelmingly positive and, in the end, we felt we had no option but to expand our footprint for 2013.

“This extra space will allow us to accommodate those 2012 exhibitors who have not yet rebooked for next year, as well as new companies who want to bring their products and services to our audience of 40,000-plus electronic systems professionals for the first time.”

During ISE 2012, at-show rebooking for 2013 resulted in 28,300 net square metres of floor space being reserved by existing ISE exhibitors. Since then, further bookings have taken that figure to almost 31,000 square metres – more than the total occupied at ISE 2012, and 9% ahead of the booking rate at the comparable time last year.

“Without the addition of Hall 8, we would now have only 1,500 net square metres still available,” adds Blackman. “And, since

a large number of companies have enlarged their stands from ISE 2012, there is still around 5,000 square metres’ worth of space that has not been rebooked from this year’s show. We simply had to find some extra legroom from somewhere!”

ISE intends to use Hall 8 for a mixture of technologies, with digital signage being the most immediate beneficiary.

The layout of the RAI allows the show to expand its Digital Signage Area from Halls 9 and 10 (which are now sold out) while retaining a single, contiguous space for this in-demand technology. Other product areas to be featured in the Hall will be professional audio, lighting control and building automation.

From a show experience perspective, the new space will also bring benefits, allowing ISE to open up a key walkway between Halls 7 and 8, easing traffic congestion at the front of the venue and encouraging attendees to take a rotational route around the whole of the RAI, which has not been possible until now.

Mike Blackman concludes: “These are really inspiring times to be associated with ISE. Those with long memories will recall that Hall 8 was the part of the RAI we used when our event first came to Amsterdam in 2005, so this addition has great symbolic resonance for a show that grown substantially and consistently in stature and influence since then.

ISE 2012 breaks all previous records

by Thomas Richard Prakasam It was inevitable. I could sense the momentum picking up as of the 2010 edition and ISE 2012 did not disappoint by breaking all previous records. The number of exhibitors increased by 15% in comparison to the 2011 edition which of course resulted in an increase of floor space by 18% and pre-registration as well was up by 21%. In real numbers that is 825 exhibitors occupying 11 Halls of the RAI with net floor space exceeding 30,000 square metres with the final count of visitors being a whopping 40,869 over the three days show. Not only that, the number of people registering for ISE’s conference, education and pre-show event programme passed the 2,000 mark for the first time.

“ISE is now clearly established as the best-attended event of its kind anywhere in the world,” comments Mike Blackman,

Managing Director, Integrated Systems Events. “To be able to post record numbers in every key area against an uncertain economic backdrop is a fantastic achievement, not just for ISE but for the industry it serves.”

2013 is already beginning to show even bigger promises - The space-rebooking process for ISE 2013 began on the second morning of the 2012 show, and resulted in a total of 28,300 net square metres of exhibit space being reserved for next year – a 5% increase on the equivalent figure 12 months ago. Many companies have chosen to enlarge their stands, with Samsung, Sony, Digital Projection, Sennheiser, Barco, AVC Group and Optoma among those taking the opportunity to ‘size up’ in 2013. You would also read in our News column in this issue that ISE has just

announced adding further floor space to accommodate the demands of new and existing exhibitors.

Next year’s edition of ISE will be held from 29 – 31 January. With the Chinese New Year festive period falling on the 10th and 11th of February, I suspect that we will see more visitors from the Far East for the 2013 edition. I am informed that the organisers have a betting pool every year on the number of visitors to ISE – maybe I can cash in by betting that there will be more visitors from Asia next year than in any previous edition.

ISE 2012 was of course more than just about the records. There were many new products and solutions introduced. Here we give you a brief round up of some of the solutions.

These are the 4S, 5S and 8S loudspeakers and the dedicated little 12S subwoofer all from the xSSeries. The three loudspeakers deliver a one hundred degrees conical dispersion, making them highly interchangeable in mixed applications and each has a coaxially mounted HF unit. The larger 10S and 12S loudspeakers within the Series are biaxial designs that have physically symmetrical horn flanges enabling rotation of the whole horn assembly by 90 degrees. They can have their range extended by the addition of any of the three bass-reflex subwoofers from the xS-Series, namely the 12S, 18S and the cardioid 27S-SUB, the latter providing acute control down into the low end covering 40 Hz-140 Hz.

InfoComm India roadshow continues with its positive momentum InfoComm International’s three-city Roadshow initiative in February, has raised the bar of enthusiasm and dynamism across the country’s AVSI community to a new high. The 5-day programme – held in the cities of New Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru on Feb 13, 15, and 17 respectively – generated, according to sources, required impetus towards contemplating holding a full-fledged exhibition in the coming years. The enthusiasm was evident in that the event reported as much as 42 per cent rise in number of visitors from 1,105 in 2011 to 1,569 in 2012 while the number of exhibitors grew as well.

While the regulars like ABtUS, AMX, Christie, Crestron, Da-Lite, dnp, Epson, Elite Screens, Extron, Harman, Jupiter, Kramer, projectiondesign, Sennhieser brought their latest to the roadshows, this year’s event had new entrants such as Baldwin Boxall, Green Solutions/ Revolabs, Ind-Agiv, Lamps Centre, Mindstec, Mojoworx, Panasonic, Wolfvision and Wow Vision seeking to explore opportunities from Indian AV dynamism.

was a first entrant too. The convergence major presented the latest offerings from its popular suites of VEO and VISTA. Riding on its recent successes in its chosen field of ‘AV over IP,’ WOW sought to spread its ‘vision’ of sophisticated communications into the Indian market.

“We gained very encouraging response/ enquiries from our very first participation, and we’re pretty much enthused with the event,” D V Prakash, India Sales Manager of Mindstec endorsed. The AV solutions distribution major displayed a wide array of offerings from Vtron, one of its popular sales pitches. Besides the Vtron videowall of 2 x 2 55” full HD LCD with LED back-lit system, Mindstec also showcased Vtron’s new cost-effective videowall controller Digicom AP 2000 series. The company also demonstrated the recently launched 65” full HD interactive digital display system with a host of futuristic features.

GreenSources, a Mumbai-based distribution start-up from the Plus Business Group, brought forth a whole big range of AV solutions from Revolabs, its main platform in the AV market. The company displayed a set of HD wireless microphone systems that are in much demand in today’s AV industry. “Our first experience with InfoComm has been very encouraging,” said N S Prasad, Technical Head (IMEA) at Revolabs. “It did help us sensitize the market about our new business initiative and our solutions too.”

Ind-AGIV, another newcomer, took to InfoComm to declare its entry into AV. While it’s been making big waves in the broadcast segment, the company is seeking new fortunes in the AV market.

“We have a range of solutions for the pro AV market as well,” said the company managing director S C Oberoi. “We have been building significant competencies into this initiative,” he said and added, “and we are proactive about it.”

Japanese electronics major Panasonic which has been an active market player in India for quite some time now, took to InfoComm with an eye on its growing AV vision. “We see tremendous potential in Indian pro-AV market,” affirms Yoshitaka Inuzuka, Senior General Manager/HeadAV System Products at Panasonic India.

Inquisitive Industry: The roadshows have apparently attracted the who’s who of the Indian industry. Almost all major AVSIs from across the country paid a visit or peep, and showed their inquisitiveness about the solutions being demonstrated on the show floor or explained in technical sessions. “It’s a good show for us,” said Harbir Singh, MD of Pan Intellicom Ltd., from New Delhi. “We had a good number of visitors from the Government Sector which is our major domain.”

According to Gopiram Malik, MD of Delhi-based AVSI AV Science and Technology, “events of this kind bring lots of value industry dynamics since they showcase the latest from the global development- both from the products and futuristic trends. This can influence the domestic market for the better.”

“This year’s show is comparatively better,” vouched Devendra Sharma, Head-Projects at the Delhi-based AVSI MRS Corporation.

The industry gathering is turning for the better- both quantitatively and qualitatively, felt Naveen Sridhar, India Sales Manager for beyerdynamic. “It’s good to see such a big and quality gathering at one place, and it is the most suitable channel for networking.”

ProVA roadshow excites industry INDIA: Pro-Visual Audio, the Chennaibased Pro Audio and Pro AV enterprise, recently organized a one-day roadshow in Bengaluru towards upping the ante of its market momentum. One of the most prestigious installs by Actis, and arguably the centrestage of VMCC, the auditorium is an ambitious

statement of scale. While its 389 seating capacity may not make it to the big league by seats, the exhaustive AVSI integration elevates it to be among the best in education domain, if not beyond, in that it boasts a well-defined video conferencing system apart from highend audio-visual display provisions.

The crescent-shaped auditorium is characterised in design by a curved, acoustically-treated, step-like ceiling; stadium-type seating; and acoustic walls done in wood, veneer, and fabric-covered

tiles in red and grey- all combining to present a pleasant setting.

With a view to enabling the visual devices with long throw capacity, the integrator incorporated projectiondesign’s EN12 long-throw lenses. These systems are complemented by a pair of 108-inch Da-Lite 76745C fixed frame screens adorning the stage from either side, positioned in such a way that they are visible from any angle or corner of the venue. A Panasonic DMP-BD60 Blu Ray player is tasked with powering the video content.

The auditorium is configured with a state-of-the-art video conferencing system by LifeSize that is characterized by a LifeSize Room 200 Codec, and is complemented by a LifeSize SDI adapter and LifeSize Networker PRI/BRI Interface. The video capture process is also augmented by the incorporation of three Sony EVI-HD1 cameras which are held by the Actis CAW camera mounts. Two cameras are placed on either side of the frame-fixed screens flanking the podium while the third camera is mounted on the rear end wall.

The three cameras together cover the whole ambience of the venue.

Playing an indispensable role in the VC system is a strong band of Extron switcher-adapter-equalizer and patch cards. The Extron SW4 3G HD-SDI multi-rate SDI digital video switcher does switching up to four HD-SDI signals as well as embedded audio, ancillary ID and metadata information.

It automatically recognizes and adapts to common SMPTE and ITU serial digital data rates, including 270 Mbps SDI, 1.485 Gbps HD-SDI, and 2.97 Gbps 3G-SDI. An Extron HDMIF-DVIDM compact HDMI female to DVI-D male moulded adapter connects HDMI and DVI-D cables and components, while a pair of Extron HDMI 101 equalizers provide the necessary active equalization to ensure optimal image quality with HDTV signals of up to 1080p/60 and high resolution computer-video signals of up to 1920x1200 resolution. Further, four HDMI M-M/50 Patch Cards are employed to help carry uncompressed HD digital video signals as well as multichannel digital audio and control signals on a single cable- thereby reducing excessive cabling and redundancy.

either side of the podium and three SG42 speakers mounted in the seating area- two on either side and one in the rear. These speakers are powered by a pair of PN212SUB subwoofers from Renkuz Heinz. One pair of ICL-DLK and ICL-PWRLK link cables and a pair of HK-ICL FR Kit have also been incorporated to complete the fixed audio install.

in the middle of two Da-Lite screens, and right behind the speakers’ seating area. “This touch screen gives the user full control of the equipment in the auditorium,” the Actis spokesperson explains, “the integrated control system allows the user control of any audio/ video related component from an easily accessible touch-panel, without interfering with the on-going event.”

To augment such a sizable audio, the DSP mixing task has been entrusted to a pair of Biamp audio mixers (one Audiaflex CM and one AudiaExpo) that is networked through an 8-port Ethernet switch DES1008D from D-Link.

Challenges:

With a view to enabling moving audio (speech etc.) on the podium and or elsewhere, four OPUS 660 handheld microphones and one OPUS 606 lapel microphone from beyerdynamic have been incorporated into the audio.

In addition, the podium has been equipped with a pair of Shure MIX418/ S/C gooseneck mics that are plugged in through a Neutrik NC3FD-L-1 XLR plug. The podium also features an Extron P/2 DA 2xi VGA distribution amplifier to augment A/V from the stage. The podium has also been made interactive by means of a 15-inch Digital Class DC 702 Interactive Monitor. Both audio and video can be played by means of a laptop from the podium.

The entire switcher interfacing task has been addressed by a family of Extron solutions. While a pair of Extron Extender D Drivers have been used for VGA, as many as five Extron WPB 103 Wall Plates have been used to augment the total system. Completing the system are an Extron CrossPoint Ultra 128 HVA (12x8 ultra wideband) matrix switcher and a DVS 304 D providing for four-input video and RGB scalar functionality.

Similarly, the entire control system has been done with a Crestron solution that comprise an AV2 dual bus control system; an STI-COM Cresnet RS-232 COM module; a C2ENET-1 singleport Ethernet Card; and a TPS-6LB-T touch panel. In addition, the control system is augmented by as many as four IRP2 Infrared Emitters and five EXT RS-232 Extenders, again, from Crestron.

Actis backed up the whole system through its proprietary 8M/3A/CH02 high power relay system and AEB-R-01 Contactor.

Awesome that it might look, the VMCC auditorium AV install did not come through without challenges; it did have its own set of issues.

“There were certain very critical technical issues,” admits the Actis rep, “the auditorium was not soundproofed; the HVAC chamber was just adjacent to it and it created a humming sound causing disturbance during events,” the rep explains, “acoustic consultancy was taken to soundproof the space, after figuring out the challenges.”

The obstructive projection angle had already been addressed by moving the projector to the rear and incorporating a long throw lens. Besides this, working with different agencies like electrical, HVAC, and the interior designers involved a lot of coordination which was a tough task. “At the same time, we had to work in tandem with the principal architect and the client to ensure that all the requirements were met.”

Overall, the VMCC at IIT Bombay emerged to be one of the biggest collaborationready installations in the country. Many features are geared towards facilitating and managing effective communication among participants and experts from all around the world. While every space had been equipped with a futuristic approach, it’s the auditorium that plays central to the whole theme- collaboration.

“It’s one of the largest and prestigious projects executed by Actis,” says the spokesperson, “the pride is doubled in that this project was concluded within the budget and met the precise requirement of the client.

Green Factor: According to Actis, that all the AV spaces within the VMCC have been provided with advanced lighting controls, the install contributes to significant energy savings. Almost all the spaces have touch panels that have been programmed to shut down the system at the touch of a button to save running costs. Hajipir Auditorium (Bengal Sappers) at Roorkee Tannoy Sets the Tone at Himalayan Point Bengal Sappers and Roorkee! The terms spell a blend of pride and prestige- one of the oldest cantonments with over 170 years of history; one of the most prestigious IITs; and gateway to one of the most holiest places in the countryall on the banks of Upper Ganga Canal, at the bountiful foothills of the mighty Himalayas. Getting to the place itself carries the spirit of all these for anyone.

SIA takes and shares this pride this time to present an AV install of a ‘high nature,’ literally!

When the Bengal Engineers Group (BEG) – informally called as Bengal Sappers – decided to have a good sound reinforcement for their newly constructed auditorium at their headquarters at Roorkee, the small but beautiful Himalayan town with riches of heritage and nature’s bounty, their ideation was to have a system that does multi-tasking: While playing central to their live band performances, the system also had to meet the multiple requirements of conferences, seminars, guest lectures and such other activities specific to the Army commune, all within a newly created cinematic setting.

The auditorium, as it is, is a big space with a seating capacity of 800; with beautifully done interiors and an elevated balcony, it does look like a conventional cinema hall of yore. The BEG management scanned and scrutinized before they zeroed in on the Delhi-based integrator Acoustic Arts to realize their brief and vision.

The Hajipir Auditorium – as the venue is called – is a distinct space, its location at a typical altitude being one, and the requirement within the space being the rest. All these issues were clinically analyzed by the design team comprising Acoustic Arts and KLM Designs headed by KL Malhotra of Delhi who handled both the interior design and acoustics consultancy for the venue.

That the space had to be a multipurpose venue, it had to have all that diverse material going into its making. “That itself was the big challenge,” informs KL Malhotra. “The shape of the venue being rectangular was a challenge in its own right,” he explains, “moreover it had to play a regular auditorium in the setting of a conventional cinema hall- both with diverse specs.”

That both the interior design and the audio-video specs differ from a regular auditorium to a cinema hall in terms of choice, use, and placement of the AV sources it was a tough call on KLM, as well as the integrator.

To create a holistic ambience that is both aesthetically beautiful and acoustically perfect towards meeting cinema as well as non-cinematic presentations, the design team chose to furnish the interior surfaces with acoustically treated wooden material. As a result, the side walls have been done with long, alternating frames made of bright golden yellow wooden panels fixed into the matrix of dark snuff wooden empanelment with a layer of maroon coloured panels at the bottom. A protrusion of upper wall blending with the ceiling poses a typical design element. The ceiling has also been acoustically treated with sound absorbing tiles.

The AV setting That a multitasking sound was one paramount factor, the design team chose VQ Series speakers and VS Series Subwoofers from Tannoy and C Series amps from Lab Gruppen. The system,

INDIA & ME INSTALLATIONS therefore, comprised a pair each of Tannoy VQ 60, and VQ64DF speakers complimented by a pair each of Tannoy VS218DR and VR subwoofers. The audio from these sources is powered by one each of C88:4X, C68:4X and C20:8X amps from Lab Grupen.

“The VQ systems utilize a unique driver technology to radiate a coherent single point source for superior dispersion control (when coupled to single horn),” explains Krishna Pratap Singh of Tannoy India. “This advanced design aligns the acoustical centres of the transducers providing a single coherent wave-front emanating from the throat,” Krishna continues, “the driver uses two concentric annular ring diaphragms. The larger of the two has a 3.5” voice coil and reproduces frequencies from 400Hz to 7 kHz.” Another major advantage, according to the Tannoy exec, is that there would be no crossover anywhere near the vocal region ensuring most natural and phase coherent reproduction at this critical area. The 2-inch HF diaphragm takes over at 7kHz to 22kHz by way of a passive or an active crossover. The sound system, therefore, delivers a uniform +3dB coverage which is a fantastic speech intelligibility in the given auditorium.

“The venue is spec’d to play military band very regularly, and its shape and structure is unique too,” says Siddharth Chhiber of Acoustic Arts, the integration firm. “The setting required a high-power system capable of playing multiple functions. We needed something that does this, blending with the interior design appeal.,” he explains. “Since the VQ Series from Tannoy come in a beautiful design and also a cabinet that is capable of the SPL similar to a conventional four-box line array, we chose them.”

More, that the venue has a balcony, and seats as many as 800 patrons, it required a downfill too. This has been addressed with a pair of VQDF speakers. In addition, as many as 20 CVS4 Tannoy speakers have been installed all over the foyer to distribute the audio from the auditorium.

Further complimenting the audio are a selection of beyerdynamic handheld mics for enabling free-moving speakers during presentations and seminars etc.

The mixing job is handled by a Yamaha Mixing Control in the control room. The audio mixing is further complimented by a pair of Biamp Nexia PM NEXLINK and a Biamp Red DSP. “The Biamp DSPs allow for different EQ and gain settings for different applications effortlessly, which was the requirement by the client,” explains Chhiber.

The non-cinematic video component had been incorporated by means of a 6200 Lumen NEC-NP4100 DLP projector mounted to the ceiling below the balcony. The projector is capable of throwing images in adequate brightness on the large screen, informs the integrator. A Kramer AV Switcher had been incorporated into the system for switching between audio and video seamlessly.

“Challenges per se, there were none for us,” affirms the integrator. Since the facility was newly built, we did not have any structural or technical challenges,” he says and hastens to add, “the only challenge was to coordinate between the teams, to be able to complete it on time.”

“The Hajipir (Bengal Sappers) auditorium is one of first projects in India installed with VQ systems,” informs the Tannoy exec, “that the client is impressed with the performance of our expertise and systems, it gave us the reassurance of our scaling capability.”

Sahana Group’s AV need addressed promptly Structural limitation of space required clinical attention to details

Mumbai-based realty firm Sahana Group wanted to create a sophisticated conferencing and boardroom facility towards addressing its growing business requirements. The Group management searched around for a company who could build a solution that looked sophisticated but with minimal technology play and being costeffective. Locally-based Prompt-AV met their needs. SIA presents a snapshot of what is a very simple but very effective AV install.

When the Sahana Group wanted to create a boardroom cum conferencing facility at its headquarter in Andheri in Mumbai, the group’s chief in-house architect Sanjay Badve was pretty much clear what he wanted: a state-of-theart technology enablement to provide them a more intimate and controlled environment for business development.

The brief for PromptAV included a set-up of multimedia presentation, and videoconferencing with complete automation.

A great deal of thought went in

considering the structural limitations of the space, and other parameters. A clinical attention to detail was required to achieve maximum flexibility. And SaiSiva, the Prompt AV chief, and his team went about weaving in a custom solution.

The solution, therefore, included a large custom Da-Lite Screen for front projection of images meant to be beamed through a Sanyo 4500 ANSI lumen projector, which is discretely mounted to the ceiling via a Comm Products motorized lift. The connectivity is future-proof with connections for HDMI and RGBHV content using a Kramer switching system in the backend.

Audio is distributed by six units of JBL two-way speakers and two EVID 4.2 FOH speakers. All the equipment is decently housed inside the table in a structured manner with climate control rack. A Crestron CP2 processor is integrated to an I-Pad touch panel for ease of operations. The task of delivering

high fidelity sound has been entrusted to a Pioneer amplifier.

All lighting scenes and drapes controls are automatically processed by the Lutron GXI 3104 dimming module which has been programmed for five different scenes through the Crestron processor. The signal management equipment consists of Kramer HDMI switcher and routers located in the table.

Prompt AV took charge of the complete design including last minute customer changes for the conference room, boardroom and the MD’s cabin.

The new facilities have provided Sahana Group with a beautiful auditorium with a flexible AV System infrastructure which can be upgraded to fulfill their unique requirements. The facility has been designed to stay at the leading edge of currently available AV systems. www.promptav.com

Dataton’s WATCHOUT at spectacular new Beijing exhibition

Exhibition features 56 projectors, a 228 meter screen, and multiple rightangle turns Dataton supplied its WATCHOUT™ multimedia content playback solution for a multi-faceted 228 m screen in an extraordinary new Chinese exhibition titled ‘Old Beijing Gets Moving’.

Located in the Chinese capital’s National Conference Center, adjacent to globally renowned Olympic venues such as the Bird’s Nest stadium and Water Cube, ‘Old Beijing Gets Moving’ takes as its inspiration ‘A Glance Round Old Beijing’ – a celebrated panorama of the city as it was in the 1930s, originally created as an extended scrolled image by the painter Wang Daguan.

Thanks to WATCHOUT’s ability to seamlessly blend and synchronise the images of 56 digital video projectors, Daguan’s original painting has been brought to life as a spectacular animated video in which up to a thousand ancient buildings including temples, castles, city walls, theatres, shops and people’s homes are enhanced by moving images of the people who once inhabited them as they go about their daily lives – walking, talking, working, shopping, playing and even, in one case, getting married.

On entering the exhibition, visitors are guided around in front of a custom-built projection screen that measures three

metres high and is over 228 metres long.

Along its ‘journey’, the screen takes a number of right-angle turns, allowing visitors to view some parts of the animation in parallel with one another, and giving them a fresh perspective each time they turn a corner.

“The theme of the exhibition is ‘Watch Old Beijing, Love New Beijing’,” explains Kenneth Cheung of Audio Visual Technique, Dataton’s local partner.

“Many of the buildings represented in Wang Daguan’s original painting are long gone, so the idea was to apply new technology in a way that would bring them back to life for today’s generation.

“The creative team responsible for ‘Old Beijing Gets Moving’ is the same one that created the acclaimed Riverside Scene in the Chinese Pavilion of the Shanghai World Expo. We thought that was an extraordinary achievement of digital programming and animation, but this new Beijing exhibition outshines it not just in terms of scale but also in terms of creativity, artistic depth and sheer ambition.”

Audio Visual Technique supplied the WATCHOUT licences to local systems integrator An Heng Group, which designed the exhibition’s AV infrastructure. As well as its multiple

image-blending, WATCHOUT was chosen for its geometry correction capabilities – essential given the many corners in the projection map – and for its centralised control features which allow the whole ‘show’ to be triggered and run automatically from the Exhibition’s Crestron control system.

Adjacent to the new display, three of Wang Daguan’s original paintings – ‘A General View of Old Tianqiao’ and ‘Landscape of the Capital and its Environs’ as well as ‘A Glance Round Old Beijing’ – are showcased for comparison, themselves occupying a total length of over 30 metres and providing a poignant artistic contrast to the multimedia wall.

A joint venture of Farstad Shipping, RollsRoyce Marine, Aalesund University and Marintek Trondheim, OSC was formed in 2004 with the specific aim of developing training centres that could accurately simulate the complex manoeuvres associated with repositioning oil rigs, positioning anchors, and the loading and offloading of rig cargo.

In one of the most impressive demonstrations yet of the company’s ability to produce consistent, highperformance, immersive imaging for 24/7 applications, Norway’s projectiondesign has supplied 48 of its F22 DLP® projectors to the world’s largest offshore training simulator.

The simulator is located in Perth, Australia, and was built by Offshore Simulator Center AS (OSC) of Aalesund, Norway. The facility is owned and operated by Farstad Shipping, a leading supplier of support services to the international oil industry, and was opened in December by the Norwegian prime minister, Jens Stoltenberg. The Perth project is the company’s most ambitious installation to date, as OSC’s design director, Joel A Mills MSc MNID, explains: “The Perth installation simulates two large, 360-degree bridges. Personnel using the simulator appear to be on the bridge of a vessel, operating controls for large-scale mechanical hardware such as winches and working in conjunction with other bridge personnel and rig cranes. The emphasis is on teamwork rather than individual tuition. When we train, we train the entire crew of a vessel together, because if something goes wrong in a ship’s engine room, for example, it affects what happens on deck. It also allows us to involve more than one vessel and various crew roles.

“Rather than using a few large, powerful projectors, our requirement is for a large number of relatively small devices

that can nonetheless deliver very highperformance imaging over a short throw distance. The F22 is perfect in this respect – bright, consistent, rugged and reliable.”

At the Perth simulation centre, the 48 projectiondesign F22s are used in WUXGA resolution, their images seamlessly blended together to produce a full 360-degree image that is some 7 metres high and 15 metres in diameter.

Mills describes the screen shape as ‘half a teacup’ and reveals that it incorporates similar technology to that used in IMAX cinemas.

“The visual simulation aspect of the system is fully integrated with the hardware on the ‘bridge’, which is all Rolls-Royce marine equipment and which behaves exactly as it would if you were really at sea,” Mills continues.

“As soon as the simulation starts, you are convinced not only that you are surrounded by water but that the water is actually moving and that you are moving with it.

“A lot can happen when you are servicing an oil-rig in a remote, offshore location, especially if the weather is bad. So the simulator gives us the opportunity to recreate those adverse weather conditions.

As the waves grow larger, the movement of the vessels within the 3D environment is mathematically and physically resolved so that their response is exactly as you would expect to find in the real world.”

10 FAQs about Corporate AV

With Kuldip Kamat, Managing Director, All Wave AV Systems

What are the main reasons for a corporate space to invest in an AV set-up?

AV in corporate spaces has evolved from a ‘nice to have’ to a ‘need to have.’ Organizations need to invest for set-up that ensures most, if not all, of their business processes are conducted in smooth, seamless and productive fashion with minimal CAPEX and optimal user experience. Inter- and intra-facility communications, training, business processes, conferences, and even day-to-day administrative operations need AV today. A typical tele- or videoconferencing AV set-up complements the interior décor and aesthetic appeal too. So, it is a necessary embellishment for any business space today.

What spaces are covered by a typical AV set-up, and why?

Today, the role of AV has evolved beyond boardrooms to almost the entire corporate workspace. Video conferencing suites with furniture and technology executed to create an immersive experience, smaller meeting rooms for distance conferencing, training rooms, cafeterias, open workspaces and receptions for Digital Signage applications, executive lounges with music rooms, laboratories (for product companies), customer focus centers/ idea rooms replete with touch screen displays etc. all are a play field for AV. How does one zero in on the exact requirement?

In AV-speak one has to separate the signal from the noise. Too often, clients get distracted by ‘what’s new; what’s cool; which brand should I look at;’ or worse ‘what’s my competitor using! If one looks at the intended application first, and not have distractions, then the right solution will come around the corner. In many cases, the ‘bill of materials’ (BOM) gets slashed by half as the original specification gets overengineered. Fitting the solution into the project budget is a skill. An honest and engaging dialogue between the AVSI and the client is thus the requirement.

Tell us about compatibility issue in design or set-up? What one must look for?

Clients or end-users must look for two aspects: technology that works crossplatform and secondly, it does not run the risk of getting obsolete in the nearterm. Cross-platform means working in a standards-based environment.

Imagine having an expensive Video Conferencing set-up that works only with a small cohort of devices, but does not handshake with other equipment or VC units. Technology without protocols can be a nightmare! Risk of out dating is high with products like purely analog switchers, displays without capability of adding signage content, Standard Definition conferencing, etc. It not only diminishes the user experience, but potentially increases the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) by means of replacements/ upgrade costs.

What are typical costs involved in a set-up?

Most clients wonder “if there is a thumb rule as to how much would a typical AV setup cost!” Unfortunately, it cannot even be guesstimated. There are too many variables involved. At best, one can benchmark against a similar sized project (but only for the purposes of budgeting). Boardrooms with video conferencing facilities can cost anywhere between US$40,000 and US$400,000 depending on the application, finish and level of sophistication!

What are the important facets in set-up design the end user should look for?

With application for each room at the core and management and budgeting at a holistic level, AVSIs, clients, consultants and space planners must decide on the AV solution by “beginning with the end in mind.” Examples of holistic design inputs include designing the lighting for video conferencing, bandwidth calculations for conferencing applications (bandwidth shaping if needed), central management for room scheduling and control, and resource management, etc.

What are the new trends some of your clients have been implementing recently?

We see a lot of action in digital signage display, LED based lighting dimmers, video walls, and knowledge capture and management domains. Most clients want to use more convergence-based technology like conferencing on tablets (Android, Windows and Apple).

How should an AVSI project be planned? What is the duration of each cycle?

Almost all AVSI projects go through the phase of design-supply-install-maintain.

Due diligence, time and effort is indispensable for each phase. The design cycle involves the SI or consultant at an early stage even before the plans are finalized. Once the BOM is done, the supply cycle takes over. Projects for example in India, by default use an overwhelming majority of imported products, so sufficient time buffers should be given to accommodate transit.

The installation preparation and cabling should be done as the supply phase gets under-way. The Maintain phase is post site handover and training, and includes periodic maintenance and training/ upkeep of the facilities. A typical corporate project takes anywhere between 30 days to 90 days depending on complexity of install and depth of the BOM.

Post set-up, what do most corporate AV clients ask for?

Two words: outstanding support! As a community, we must ensure that the relationship is that of a partnership, and not simply a vendor. A lot of clients ask for updates in technology as well, so service is of paramount importance.

Where do you see the technology in the SI space heading in the next three years?

There are two fundamental shifts: one- a gradual, continual improvement shift in product space like Wi-Fi based controls (from an earlier RF), LED based lighting from CFL, “going green” and calculating CER’s etc. The second are paradigm shifts. I believe the rapid game changers in the Android market will potentially change the way devices are designed and operated.

5 reasons IT professionals will embrace AVB

by Ron Camden, Vice President of Worldwide Sales, Biamp Systems We focus a lot on the advantages AVB will bring to our integration partners: streamlining the deployment process, eliminating hundreds of feet of wires, simplifying complicated network design issues, etc. But often overlooked is what I consider a “game-changing” aspect of AVB —IT professionals will embrace it.

And that fact will secure meetings and win business for all of us.

Why are we confident IT professionals will accept AVB more readily than other AV network protocols? Here are five important reasons: 1. IEEE standard. AVB was developed by the prominent task group that brought us the IEEE 802 standards for wireless networking. IT types — from department heads to network engineers to help-desk workers — recognize and value IEEE standards. The influence of and respect for IEEE cannot be stated enough. The organization has over 400,000 members in 160 countries. It publishes 8 of the top 10 journals in Telecommunications and 6 of the top 10 journals in Computer Science, Hardware & Architecture, among many others.

2. Open standard. AVB is an open standard, which means any device manufacturer can include AVB technology in their product. IT professionals inherently understand that IEEE = open standard and that open standard = interoperability.

Interoperability is critical to IT personnel because it allows choice, better pricing, and of course reduced support costs.

For example, Gartner* found that introducing a second networking vendor into an enterprise infrastructure will reduce total cost of ownership for most organizations by at least 15% to 25% over five years. Closed, proprietary solutions are a thing of the past.

3. Future proof. Because there is a standards body dedicated to maintaining and improving the AVB standard,

interoperability is ensured now and in the future. With “cost reduction” landing in the top 10 list of CIO priorities, no IT department will invest in solutions they will need to “rip and replace” in a couple of years.

4. Easy to manage. Audio visual systems, particularly in large-scale installations, can be extremely complex.

When the devices in a system can be standardized on AVB, it takes uncertainty out of the equation and minimizes complexity — both in installation and management. Devices interact and function as expected. IT professionals do not embrace solutions with complexity and uncertainty.

Technically sound. The AVB standards were developed collaboratively with input from representatives from the consumer electronics, technology, professional AV, and automotive industries. It also has the backing of wellrecognized IT providers, including Cisco, Broadcom, and Intel.

It is this collaboration that makes the AVB standards more technically valuable than proprietary technologies.

Today, the AVB standards are new and not widely known in IT circles. Our opportunity is to evangelize the benefits and features that matter most to IT professionals.

Tim Anderson on 3LCD Technology Systems Integration Asia caught up with Tim Anderson Senior Product Marketing Manager 3LCD, who was in Singapore last November to give a presentation at the Digital Life Hi-Tech Classroom forum through an invitation

by Epson. Tim gives us his views about 3LCD technology.

SI Asia: February 2011 saw a significant milestone for 3LCD technology as it became the first projection technology in the world to surpass 70 million chips shipped.

To what do you attribute this success?

Tim: We can attribute these successes to three outstanding features about 3LCD technology. First 3LCD provides amazing colours. All 3LCD projectors use a 3-chip optical engine to deliver incredibly bright, true-to-life colour. Secondly, it is energy efficient. 3LCD projection technology uses light efficiently to create stunning images. In contrast to 1-chip technology, 3LCD requires on average 25% less electricity per lumen of brightness. Finally reliability. 3LCD systems are reliable and use a simple optical design: 3 chips and 1 prism. Most 3LCD optical systems use no moving parts.

SI Asia: What have been some of the latest technology breakthrough for 3LCD? Tim: In September, 3LCD launched the world’s first(1) high-temperature polysilicon (“HTPS”) TFT liquid crystal chips for 3D 3LCD projectors. Developed and manufactured using the latest processing technologies, the HTPS chips employ a new technology called ‘Bright 3D Drive’. 3LCD applies this technology in a new range of 3D chips, currently in volume production, which will power a number of 3D 3LCD projectors.

Other technology advances to look out for would be those revolving around lamp technology. 3LCD chips can work with any contemporary illuminant source, including short-arc mercury and xenon pressure lamps. Advances in lamp design have resulted in higher lamp and optical engine efficiency with improved contrast, all at lower power consumption. LED light sources will also make a great impact. LCD chips, with their simple and compact light path, are well suited for use with LED illuminants.

In fact, LED light sources would make the optical chain even simpler by eliminating dichroic mirrors.

SI Asia: According to a recent Pacific Media Associates report, interactive and short throw projectors continue to see strong growth specifically in the education sector. Your thoughts on this.

Tim: 3LCD technology plays a key role in this sector. As you may know, our largest partner, Epson, holds a 23 per cent share globally in the education sector, according to Future Source. When comparing DLP to 3LCD technology where interactivity is concerned, with 3LCD there is no colour banding or drop in brightness and pen responsiveness is outstanding.

Regarding short throw projectors, customers tell us that they appreciate having the projector close to the wall as it becomes easier to mount and reduces shadow and clutter.

One last point about market trends. I think we’re finally seeing customers choose higher resolution projectors like WXGA. It used to be that SVGA was good enough, but today for the type of content educators are showing SVGA isn’t high enough anymore. I always recommend XGA or higher resolution.

Enabling experience with AGC Networks Limited Satya K Jha – popularly called as SK – manifests an ‘integrated’ expertise of over 18 years- from systems integration, operations, sales and marketing of IT and telecom solutions; and strategic business planning; and a dynamism of a different genre- a passion for excellence through collaborative leadership. As founder of erstwhile 3D Networks, top exec at Wipro, and currently MD & CEO of India’s leading enterprise communication solutions integrator AGC Networks – a technology services vertical of Aegis Limited, which is an Essar enterprise – his leadership has not only redefined the term, but also organizations. SIA caught up with SK to capture his vision and mission for future. Excerpts: SIA: From the illustrious Tata Sons and simple EPABX start-up to the aggressive Essar Group, how would you characterize the evolution of AGC? SK: Today EPABX may look like a primitive technology, but when we brought it to India, it was no less a revolution. Since then, AGC Networks has been striving to bring in a technology that is most updated and can help enterprise optimally use their resources.

We haven’t changed on that front at all.

From an MNC partnering with one of India’s largest business houses, to a pure MNC operations in India, to becoming part of one of India’s most aggressive and diversified business houses – Essar – we have come a long way.

It is this evolution which helped us develop a rich and pulsating organizational culture, which we are proud of. We have team members who brought in the heritage of the Tata Group; those who bring to the table an MNC culture; and those who characterize the aggression of the highly diversified Essar Group. This amalgamation has resulted in creation of a cohesive and vibrant team at AGC Networks. To sum up in one line: the best of the people contributing to rich organizational culture reside at AGC Networks.

SIA: It’s the Silver Jubilee year for AGC. How does it feel like? And what does it mean to you?

SK: AGC has energy of a 25 years old youth- a youth who has learned while walking the path; has gained exposure on route; ready to take on any challenge; and has only one way to go - forward.

To some it’s a celebration of a journey completed; a milestone. For us, it is beginning of the true journey.

Looking at these 25 years, the industry can be seen evolving in a manner which a new company can easily miss. We are the one who have witnessed the way things were set and the one I call as Big Reset. We all know that it all started with some apps which were developed to initiate secured storage. When these securely stored apps were to be shared, is when people worked upon building networks. Further evolution saw building of UC applications so that networks can be optimally used and user experience becomes rich.

Now we are seeing the big resetwhere UC applications are deriving the networking needs of future; their security requirements. This will finally bring us back to the inception of this storyapplication development.

Being witness to these shifts and reset made us more mature and ready for further changes.

SIA: What would it mean to the industry?

SK: We are experienced enablers and that’s what we are our offering to the industry. When we work on a solution, we look at how will it create a better work place for clients and a convenient interacting platform for their customers.

That is what we build.

Secondly, when I say we are 25 years young, it means we bring in vigor and focus working on tomorrow’s technology to ensure that the customer’s experience is rich and supportive to organizations; they transform into better, more customer and employee friendly organizations. This helped us on two fronts: introspecting to understand the WHY of our existence; and developing the ‘four pillar strategy’ to focus our energy better.

SIA: Despite being India’s first enterprise with multinational corporate parentage, and strong alliances, AGC made little headway in overseas market till now- could you explain?

SK: AGC was formed as an alliance between a MNC- Avaya and one of India’s largest business houses- Tata. It was aimed at the Indian market; Avaya were the technology arm and Tata were helping them build inroads in the then nascent Indian market. It was then Avaya’s GTM strategy to strengthen their position in Indian market through the alliance. So the question of making little headway overseas doesn’t arise. But post acquisition by Essar, and coming under Aegis, the paradigm shift has happened. Aegis is a renowned name in over 50 countries. With this, we are in a very strong position to expand globally, and we will soon have figures talk about that.

SIA: AGC’s stake in the explosive markets of Middle East doesn’t reflect its competence- could you explain?

SK: The only explosiveness I see in Middle East is of untapped opportunities.

The region is rich and with huge potential. There are nations which have been developing; and need technology upgrades to maintain that pace. And, yes there are nations at war and unrest too, but they also need technology to rebuild

SIA: How about the recently announced ambition of seeking European and North American fortunes?

SIA: AGC also chose to be a largely horizontal player- how is this a better proposition than mastery in a chosen vertical or two?

SIA: What do you think is AGC’s single largest contribution to the industry?

SK: Like I said Aegis’ strong presence in outsourcing business especially in the US and European markets will definitely give us a head start in these markets. But we are not looking at limiting ourselves with Aegis Global client base; our approach to business is different than our competition and this will be our USP. Again, I refer back to the big reset where UC forms the core of our GTM plan. Secondly, the broad spectrum of solutions we offer to the wide range of business vertical will also help us.

SK: When I say I stand for enabling experience, I can’t choose expertise in a particular pocket. Then I would be falsifying on my promise statement.

Secondly, from our experience, we have understood that a project in a vertical can be great learning for other verticals as well. At AGC Networks, our focus is to understand every vertical’s needs, understand them, and propose a solution through our rich learning of cross-verticals.

SIA: With most European markets in shambles, how would you make this happen beneficially? Any action plan to go about?

SIA: Most MNCs have made larger fortunes by developing competencies in one or two focused domains. How about that making sense to AGC?

SK: European markets have already begun showing signs of recovery and I strongly believe that soon it will be better than ever. To reach that position, European enterprises also need to upgrade their existing technology platform and a lot of action can be

SK: Well, it’s a strategic decision which every enterprise is at liberty to take. At AGC, we have another reason to keep an eye on all verticals and not put focus on a few. In the last 25 years, we have worked upon opportunities which came up from across verticals, this has equipped

SK: Most System Integrators we see have been in transactional mode. Here they sell a solution and charge clients.

We totally differ from them. We charge clients for the experience they get and are able to extend to their customers.

This differentiation brings us closer to our customer, understand their needs better, and deliver a solution which creates a different usage experience.

SIA: How about the vision 2020 for AGC? Where do you intend to see the company by the time?

SK: Yes, we are planning for exponential growth in our revenues but we are not aiming at just that. Our plan is to become the preferred Solutions Integrator of enterprises operating in all the five continents.
