InfoComm launches new event for MEA marketplace

DUBAI: After countless requests from exhibitors over the last two years, InfoComm International has confirmed that it is launching a tradeshow for the Middle East, Africa and Gulf region in Dubai, the region’s most powerful trade hub.

InfoComm Middle East & Africa (IFMEA) will take place from 9-13 October, 2011 at the Dubai International Convention & Exhibition Centre. A joint venture between InfoCommAsia and Dubai World Trade Centre, the event will be co-located and jointly promoted with GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK, the largest ICT event for the region. IFMEA 2011 will draw the attention of the 130,000+ attendees who are expected to visit GITEX, to the power of professional AV products and solutions.

“IFMEA is born out of a marriage of strengths,” comments Terry Friesenborg, Senior VP of International Development, InfoComm International. “Dubai World Trade Centre is the most established and influential organiser of tradeshows for the Middle East and Gulf region, while as an industry body, InfoComm has been

providing education and certification for the pro-AV industry since 1939, as well as organizing its own highly successful series of tradeshows and other events throughout the world.”

Last year’s GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK saw more than 130,000 attendees from 135 countries converging in Dubai to see products and solutions from over 3,500 exhibitors, occupying some 76,000 square metres of floor space.

Richard Tan, General Manager, InfoCommAsia, says that it is not just the scale of GITEX that makes it the perfect companion for IFMEA. “The launch of our event comes at a turning point in the evolution of professional AV,” Tan explains. “The migration of AV products onto IT networks is making systems integration a more net-centric process than ever before. CresMEET 2010 A Success INDIA: Crestron Electronics India Pvt Ltd held CresMEET 2010 at Le Meridien, Bangalore on 18 December 2010. Nearly 400 people attended the event, including dealers, consultants, system integrators, IT professionals and the management of several renowned AV companies from across the country.

The event started off with a welcome speech by Mr Vinay Kumar, Assistant Sales & Application Manager of Crestron Electronics India Pvt Ltd (Mumbai), who spoke to the audience about the Crestron theme of the year – Visoneering. Hitachi, Ltd. to License Scala SignChannel in Japan JAPAN: Scala Inc. has announced an agreement with Hitachi, Ltd. that will provide the latter with an exclusive license to operate and resell Scala’s SignChannel low-cost digital signage software services throughout Japan.

Hitachi is already one of Scala’s larger customers, having deployed more than 5,000 Scala driven displays throughout Japan. Scala’s software powers Hitachi’s Mediaspace digital signage ASP services, which are used by customers such as barber shops, general retail and convenience stores, shopping malls, train and subway stations, real estate chains, etc.

SignChannel is an online SaaS service that combines the simplicity of a Web 2.0 application with Scala’s traditional template-based composition system.

It integrates all of the modern features of a digital signage system, including creation and editing of playlists, scheduling, composition of messages from templates and more. SignChannel also includes a wealth of ready-to-display licensed content such as general news, sports news, weather information and health advice, which allows anyone to set up a digital signage display without ever having to worry about where to get useful and interesting content to keep their audience engaged.

Kramer conducts course in India INDIA: Kramer India conducted the first INS212 Installation Technician Training Course in India through the Kramer India AV Academy on 27, 28 and 29 January 2011 at The Lalit, Bangalore.

Kramer India has signed up a curriculum licensing agreement with InfoComm International to conduct the INS212 Installation Technician Course for the year 2011. This is the first time that this course has been licensed and conducted outside the US. The inaugural three-day course received an overwhelming response from all the dealers and customers in India. Bosch CCTV System installed on Cãn Thó Bridge VIETNAM: The Can Tho Bridge Management Ltd Co, which is responsible for maintaining and ensuring the profitable viability of the Cãn Thó Bridge in Vietnam, has installed a customised CCTV system incorporating the industry-leading AutoDome® and the FlexiDomeVF series of dome cameras from Bosch. The company faced many challenges in ensuring that vehicles crossing the bridge were maintaining the correct lane regulations and not causing traffic disorder. QATAR: Danish Interpretation Systems (DIS) has delivered 10 pieces of DC 6190P conference units, 2 IS 6132P interpretation desks and a SW 6000 software package to the Civil and Commercial Court in Qatar Financial Center (QFC) in Doha. Although the project is not very big and the quantities seem to be rather unimpressive, this doesn’t make the reference less valuable.

The purpose of this institution is to provide a courtroom for specific international court cases which need to be tried on neutral ground. A famous international cricket bribery scandal had been handled in this court by a team of international lawyers and judges.

Mr. Ahmed Abouzoor, site engineer for Systems Integrator Techno Q, is very proud of this installation where he worked with DIS products for the first time. “This was a critical project and luckily we could finish the installation on time. Lien Khuong International Airport Flies High With Bosch VIETNAM: Southern Airports Corporation (SAC), the entity which is responsible for the construction of the infrastructure for aviation in Vietnam, has installed a new PA and CCTV system at the Lien Khuong International Airport, the largest among four airports of Lam Dong province, with products from Bosch’s dedicated series of Plena public address systems as well as AutoDome and Dinion CCTV camera systems to better serve travellers. The airport’s previous PA and Security system used a combination of products from different manufacturers which created many systemic problems that affected the operations at Lien Khuong International Airport as well as the reputation of the SAC.

The airport’s CCTV system now features 15 sets of AutoDome® cameras, 16 sets of Dinion cameras with 5-50mm lenses and two units of DVR-16E2 digital video recorders. The PA system incorporates products from the Plena Series consisting of the voice alarm controller, voice alarm call station and voice alarm keypad.

Audio reproduction was directed to 303 units of LBC 3090/01 (6W) ceiling loudspeakers, six units of LA1-UM36-D (36W) box loudspeakers, and two units of LBC 3483/00 (35W) horn loudspeakers.

The SAC has acknowledged that the new PA and CCTV systems from Bosch have met all requirements and have proven to be effective in assisting with the daily

INDIA: The Actis Experience Centre in Mumbai, India, went online in the first quarter of 2010 but saw an expansion in the third quarter of 2010. Having seen the benefit of having an experience centre, Actis completed another experience centre in its offices in Chennai at the end of last year.

“The objective of the experience centre is to allow potential clients as well as consultants to experience first hand how the solutions we offer work in a certain environment. We believe the centre gives them the opportunity to appreciate better what we are offering them and it has worked successfully for us,” said Mr Abhimanyu Gupta, Director of Actis.

Actis has definitely put in much effort and thought into the experience centre.

The entire place including the interior furnishings have all been well thought out to enhance the client’s experience which starts at the lounge of the waiting area where a large interactive LCD screen provides visitors with an opportunity to learn more about the company. This simple display illustrates to clients what they can do in their offices. All the background programming and content for the interactive LCD were done inhouse at Actis.

The first floor of the experience centre is divided into a few areas. They are the 3D Telepresence room, the Training room, the Home Cinema room and the Server room. The basement floor features the Boardroom.

Training Room This fully-equipped room showcases a variety of solutions from an interactive white board to an interactive panel within a lectern that controls everything, including the window shades, which were custom made for the training room. The training room also showcased sound reinforcement solutions as well as the interface for “student/teacher” interaction.

3D Telepresence Room In this room, visitors are connected to other Actis offices to experience how 3D Telepresence works. “For everything, we use the proper standards. In this particular room, we use very little bandwidth and we show this to visitors so that they understand that we are able to provide them with a 3D Telepresence facility which they can maintain at a low cost. These are actual examples so they are able to see for themselves the quality of the connectivity and the different experiences 3D provides compared to a normal video conference,” Abhimanyu said.

Home Theatre Surround sound, media servers, lighting and shade control – everything that makes a Home Theatre tick - is showcased in this room. Comfortable chairs and carpeting enhance the experience.

The Boardroom This room, which was part of the third quarter expansion, is in the basement of the Actis Building. The Boardroom showcases solutions for video and audio

The solution blends smoothly, with the onlooker unable to tell that the screen is being powered by multiple projectors.

The large screen size especially aids participants that are seated in the rear half of large meeting rooms. The other advantage is the ability to view multiple sources simultaneously – eg. multiple computers, far end video conferencing, near end video conferencing, document camera etc - aiding in quick decision making by senior management.

Edge blending technology brings the benefits of videowall technology at a lower cost, and more importantly without ANY seams in the projected image.

Don’t Knock the Back-end The server room is also part of the experience centre. “We feel it is important for visitors to see how important it is to have a properly stacked server room that allows for easy maintenance,” comments Abhimanyu.

Most interestingly, even the bathroom facilities within the experience centre have energy saving solutions. They turn on the lights when someone enters and turns them off after the person leaves.

ISE 2011 shatters attendance record and sets new benchmark for AV tradeshows

Existing show’s floor space already sold out for 2012 show The 2011 Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) tradeshow attracted a record 34,870 visitors to the Amsterdam RAI between 1-3 February. This is the highest attendance achieved by any standalone AV tradeshow anywhere in the world and represents a 22% increase on last year’s attendance figure.

Visitors saw innovations and solutions from 715 exhibitors, including 150 new companies. The exhibition covered some 26,650 square metres of floor space which was an 11% rise on ISE 2010.

On-site exhibitor rebookings for the 2012 show have resulted in 102% of the 2011 floor plan already being reserved.

Organiser Integrated Systems Events had confirmed that the 2012 show would occupy an expanded footprint with the addition of Hall 7 to the 2011 layout.

One of the main reasons for this increase in attendance is the geographical location of the show, as the event is set in Europe as opposed to North America, and the scope of its attendees which range from Portugal in the West to Russia in the East and even Saudi Arabia in the South.

Attendees were also drawn to ISE 2011 by its unique mix of systems technology for both commercial and residential applications, by an extended pre-show conference programme embracing the InfoComm Future Trends Summit and

Wainhouse Visual Communications Summit, and also by enhanced educational offerings from not-for-profit trade associations CEDIA and InfoComm International, the show’s co-owners. New pavilions and show features dedicated to 3D applications, digital signage content, audio-video networking and much more were also high on the event agenda.

Some of the largest exhibitors that attended this year were Crestron, Mitsubishi, Chief, Barco, Sanyo, Panasonic, Epson and Sennheiser. ISE has become the ultimate branding experience for these larger companies.

For smaller and more niche companies, they were able to network with both the major companies as well as create relationships with the attendees who work in the industry.

“Visitors to ISE benefit not just from viewing new products, but from seeing them in the context of wider application and market developments. This is not a gadget show – it is a platform on which attendees can gather and discuss new ways of applying technological innovations to deliver value to their customers,” said Mike Blackman, Managing Director, Integrated Systems Events.

There was a huge range of products showcased as this year the focus was lighting systems, projection screens,

wiring, switches, projectors, projector lamps, speakers, sound equipment and LED signage.

A major development that occurred on the second day of the show was the announcement of the acquisition of Informationsteknik Scandinavia A/S and its DIS business activities by Shure Incorporated. Both companies stated that they saw benefits and opportunities from the acquisition.

While a detailed analysis of the show’s attendance profile has yet to be completed, some clear trends have already emerged.

“ISE has a distinctive European flavour but it is increasingly a forum for global business,” explained Blackman. “We have had substantial visitor growth from Russia, the Middle East, Africa and the Indian sub-continent, and are also hosting significant numbers of consultants and top-level integrators from Asia and North America.”

Above all, ISE 2011 strengthened its reputation as a creator of new business opportunities for every link in the systems integration value chain. “We promoted the show with the slogan ‘all the connections you need’, and our level of exhibitor rebooking indicates that this is not an empty promise,” Blackman added.

The benefits of RMS is that it enables one to pro-actively maintain equipment, schedule rooms and pre-configure equipment, create instant web-based reports, track any asset such as tables/ chairs, flip charts, and mobile A/V carts in real time using Anterus™ RFID tracking. The RMS 2020 is system agnostic and works on a client/server base system.

The key feature of the 2020 version is the dashboard which provides more information than ever which takes into account human factors for ease of use.

RMS 2020 is able to manage resources such as power management, digital media, CCTV/security, fire safety as well as building access control.

“With the RMS 2020, for the user it is more a desktop application experience rather than a web browser,” said Doug

Hall, product manager of AMX. “Some of the additional features of the RMS 2020 include RMS Dashboard which gives users information on overall energy usage and together with Load Shedding it enables users to control power usage. If the user has reached his goal on power usage, he is able to adjust the power via the RMS 2020.

The Hotlist (asset management) is in the front of the board for display of urgent system issues or devices needing attention. Calibre targets LEDView 400 and 510 specifically for the Asian market

Calibre who have traditionally been involved in OEM have in the past 18 months or so started to manufacture solutions under their own brand name. Their strategy – to broaden the product range with more models and specifically for each model to have an entry level solution to meet price points that emerging markets will find acceptable. In fact at ISE, Calibre showcased better level of processing in entry level solutions. Lighthouse shows latest LED screens at ISE 2011 LED screen manufacturer Lighthouse Technologies exhibited its latest panels for the installation and rental markets at ISE 2011.

Two innovative panels for the permanent installation market were the Impact 12 and Impact 16, 12mm and 16mm pixel pitch respectively.

The new panels have an exceptionally high 6000 nits of brightness, making them ideal for any situation with high intensity ambient light. They offer excellent colour reproduction and 16-bit processing technology to a wider range of permanent locations where access might otherwise be extremely difficult.

Mitsubishi Electric has successfully developed a unique passive matrix (PMOLED) technology that is ideal for large screen applications. The unique characteristics of Diamond Vision OLED make it ideal for use in relatively

Samsung unveils LFD with ultra-thin bezels At ISE, Samsung Electronics Co Ltd introduced the 550UTn, its latest 46” and 55” UT Series of Large Format Display (LFD) units, featuring super-thin bezels that enable companies to create seamless and effective video wall solutions.

Measuring only 5.3mm (55”) and 6.7mm (46”) from bezel to bezel, Samsung’s UT Series dramatically reduce the distance between parts of the image, presenting a more complete and coherent multi-display picture while providing a larger, more effective display area.

SurgeX debuts international sequencer SurgeX International held the world premiere of the SEQ1200i Sequencer at this year’s ISE.

Because the Fusion software is installed within every HMP and no additional software is required, there are no subscription licence fees for users to pay. The user interface features intuitive drag-and-drop architecture and there is a choice of languages.

Based on the same basic ultra-compact design concept that brought SpinetiX four industry awards in 2011, the company’s latest media player, the HMP200, uses only 7 watts of power due to its solid state storage design. InfoComm India Roadshow exceeds expectations Organiser in a bind as to how to accommodate growing interest

by Thomas Richard Prakasam There were at least ten companies in the queue to participate at the roadshow who could not be accommodated. After this year’s showing, a number of the exhibitors had already indicated to the organisers that they are ready to put pen to paper for next year’s edition. Some even wanting to expand their space considerably. Therein lies the perplexing situation for the organisers. There is absolutely no doubt that InfoComm Asia Pte Ltd’s roadshow approach in India is yielding successful results. “Other than the industry, our key objective is to bring vertical markets to the show and the best way to do that is to have the show at their doorstep,” said Richard Tan, General Manager of InfoCommAsia Pte Ltd. From that perspective, Delhi attracts the government sector, Mumbai the entrepreneurs and Bangalore the IT sector.

Suggestions from participating exhibitors came fast and furious – all of course in the name of further enhancing the show. One suggestion was to spend more days in each city. This will mean stretching the show beyond the existing 5 days which might not be practical from the logistics point of view and also from the international exhibitors’

point of view. In fact, if figures are anything to go by, it might not make any difference. Last year the roadshow was held over two days in Mumbai and this year only on one day. The number of visitors this year in Mumbai was 350 compared to last year’s figure of 258.

“The concept of the roadshow is to keep it tight. And to ensure that time is well spent we provide f&b throughout the event, so visitors need not step out of the ballroom. Keeping it as a one day event means the vertical markets who are keen to understand the solutions will make time to visit it and exhibitors can be assured that those who visit the show are definitely potential clients,” said Tan. Some suggested longer hours. At present the roadshow in each city is held from 10am to 4pm. Extending it a further two hours might yield more visitors. This is something the organisers are working on. The issue stamps from the fact that there are not many good hotel ballrooms in India that can accommodate the space required and provide good f&b service.

This means that most of the time, the hotel ballroom is double-booked and so clearing the ballroom after the event becomes a factor. The good news is the organisers are putting in full effort to

see if this can be resolved. And for those who could not be accommodated, the organisers are trying their best to get larger venues that are at least on par with the present venues – the stumbling block being that they need to find the same space and quality for all three cities.

Last year, during the InfoComm India roadshow, beyerdynamic had a pleasant surprise when Le Meridien – the venue for the roadshow in Bangalore, placed an order for its microphone system. Mr G. Vijay, VP of Operations at Le Meriden, comments, “We were looking for a good wireless microphone system last year for our boardroom upgrade and as the roadshow was in our hotel, we got the opportunity to see the solution from beyerdynamic which perfectly fitted our requirements so we placed our order there and then.” Le Meridien, which is part of the Starwood Group, is presently investing and upgrading the hotel’s systems. In fact, the board room at the Business lounge was

also recently upgraded with a 4-way video and audio conferencing system from Polycom. “It is good that the show is literally at our doorstep. We find it useful in gathering information,” said Vijay, before making his rounds at the venue – obviously keen on looking out for new solutions.

The Challenges and Trends for the AV Industry in India growth. Nevertheless there is no doubt that the AV industry is poised for further growth and Ratnesh feels that the sunrise segments are video over IP and multi-format destinations.

“The key to the future is for solutions to be able to handle the various formats seamlessly as this is what clients would expect.”

Our solutions are predominantly found within the military, in networks, TV Studios and 3D simulations. We have great faith that India will continue to grow because it has two things going for it – commerce and capitalism! We are very happy with the show. I came earlier to India to meet with some key accounts and I was most happy to see that all of them turned up at the show as well. To me, ‘we hit a winner’ with the InfoComm India roadshow.”

When queried as to where else he sees growth, Ratnesh replies, “Digital signage definitely has great potential in India. The other area is AV spaces which is related to emotional aspects.

Emotional aspects go beyond ease of use and ergonomics and deals with a futuristic technological understanding of human emotions. This is the next exciting frontier for AV technology.”

View about the Indian AV Market SI Asia spoke to Ranjit Singh, CTS-I, CTS-D, Consultant, RST Technologies about the Indian AV market. “The quality of the jobs have gone up by 100% as clients have learnt that appointing quality consultants and getting solutions provided by the AV industry is not a luxury but a necessity.

That is good for the industry. However, the negative aspect is in the manner in which the jobs are handled. Don’t get me wrong, the industry has been doing a great job even before I came here, which was three years ago. However, I feel half of the huge potential is lost because system integrators consider each other as competitors which then leads to bickering and complaints which eventually leads to clients being put off while they wait for the solution. What the industry really needs is cohesiveness. SIs need to respect what they are doing and not just go after cost which will

kill them. It is also important that SIs and consultants continue to provide clients with the latest technology updates so that clients are also well informed”.

“On a more positive note, the average age of a person in the AV industry in India is the mid 20’s, which is good for the industry as they are eager to learn, are able to absorb information faster and actually start off more knowledgeable, which I feel will propel the industry to greater heights.”

Fueling this growth is the growing affluence of the middle class in Asia, allowing patients to travel to other countries for better quality medical care than in their own countries.

Likewise, patients in Europe and the United States are travelling to seek alternatives to their own constrained health care provider systems.

Quite often the price for a medical procedure in Asia is only 20 to 30 percent of that in the United States or United Kingdom.

To respond to this trend, many hospitals in South East Asia have adopted and invested in the latest medical technology to provide stateof-the-art care. However, as medical tourism encompasses increasingly complicated procedures and devotes more resources to non-domestic patients, challenges are emerging.

To match internal demands as well as demands from medical tourist, hospitals in the region are going through a major upgrade or are being built at a rapid pace. India on its own has a huge number of hospital projects on the pipeline. Baclo is investing USD75 million for a cancer hospital; Panacea Biote together with Umkal Medicals is investing USD200 million for a multi-speciality hospital; KPC Healthcare Services is building an integrated healthcare city in West Bangalore with an investment of USD325 million and Fortis and DLF intend to set up 15 hospitals in India in a 5 year time frame. In Singapore, a new hospital in the west is already being built and most recently an announcement was made for another regional hospital to be set up in the Northeast. Columbia Asia has plans to set up six hospitals in Malaysia. This is just the tip of the iceberg with many more hospitals being planned to be built in the region or going through refurbishment to keep up with current trends.

Haivision has expanded KLV support on the Makito and Barracuda encoder families to include metadata from Ethernet (UDP/IP) and the SDI vertical ancillary data space (VANC). The documentation should complement and coordinate related architectural, engineering and construction documentation. The standard outlines a consistent set of the standard tasks, responsibilities and deliverables required for professional AV systems design and construction.

In the last article I wrote about the background of InfoComm’s performance standards initiative. In this article I am going to write about the Standard guide published by InfoComm and ANSI, that is “Standard Guide for AV Systems Design and Coordination Processes”. I strongly recommend that you purchase the standard guide from the ANSI website and then refer to it along with this article.

The Standard Guide has an introductory part consisting of the following sections: Abstract, Keywords, Copyright, Foreword, About InfoComm International, About ANSI, InfoComm International Standards Development

Abstract:

The Standard Guide is structured in six different parts as follows: I. Scope, Purpose, and Application: This contains the information about purpose and exceptions.

II. Referenced Publications: This lists “Normative References” or the

references which are fundamental to this standard guide and “Informative References” which are the references referred to by this standard guide.

III. Definitions: This contains the definitions of the different words which are used throughout the standard guide.

IV. Requirements: This part elaborately talks about the project phases namely Professional AV Infrastructure Phase, System Design and Construction Documentation Components.

V. Verification IV. Appendix 1: Optional Services The Project Criteria according to this standard guide is as follows: Designers should analyse and define the system’s budget, performance needs and functional requirements prior to ordering and installing equipment in order to clearly and formally document the owner’s needs and expectations.

Following approval of the functional concept and overall budget, system design may commence. Subsequently, after designers have completed and

fully reconciled the design with the documented functional requirements, system engineering, labour deployment, construction can begin.

I. Project Planning and Coordination Meetings Phase:

The project contract documents will typically specify the number, length, and location of meetings required throughout the design effort. Meetings can include face-to-face sessions as well as audio, video or web-based sessions.

The type, timing and quantity of the meetings should be adjusted to reflect the project requirements.

II. Program Phase (Briefing Phase or Concept Design Phase):

The purpose of the program phase is to discuss, clarify and document the owner’s needs, concerns, expectations and constraints in order to guide the design team in its approach to the functionality and cost of the AV systems: IIA. Needs Analysis:

Interview with end Users, Survey of Existing Facilities, Inventories of Existing Equipment, Discovery of Additional Project Requirements.

IIB. Program Report:

Executive Summery, Space Planning, Systems Descriptions, Infrastructure Considerations, AV Budgets.

III. Design Phase:

The purpose of these activities and their associated documents is to identify the functional requirements and design intent for the AV systems. These documents should reference any work required by other trades to complete the AV design. Coordination of these documents with those of other trades is essential: IIIA. Architectural and Infrastructure Requirements: 1. Architectural and Interior Design.

2. Electrical Design.

3. Workmanship and Technique.

4. Acoustical.

5. Information Technology (IT) IIIB. AV Systems Documents:

These documents detail the qualifications, items and performance requirements necessary to complete the scope of work for the AV system: 1. Bid Specifications: Part-1: General, Part-2: Products, Part-3: Execution.

2. Design Drawings: These documents conform to the overall project document format and include standard keys, schedules, tables and notes pertaining to the AV systems: (a) Title Block (b) Cover Page (c) Standard Details: Drawing Key, Schedules, Division of Labour.

3. Facilities Drawings: These documents detail the layout and location of the AV system’s equipment within the project facility or grounds: (a) Device and Equipment Plans, Sections and Elevations (b) Equipment Mounting Details (c) Miscellaneous Details.

4. System’s Drawings: These documents detail the audio, video, control signal switching and routing and other details necessary to convey the complete AV system design: (a) Functional Diagrams (b) Equipment Rack Elevations (c) Specialized Plates and Panels (d) Specialty Connector and Miscellaneous Wiring Diagrams (e) Custom Configurations and Modification (f) Patch Panel Layouts and Labelling.

5. Custom Application Documentation: These documents convey information necessary to illustrate additional requirements for the configuration of software, hardware and other programmable equipment and subsystems: (a) DSP, Consoles and DSP Work Surfaces (b) User Interface (c)Asset Management and Scheduling System.

IV. Construction Phase: A. Construction Drawings: Construction drawings, provided in PDF or other unalterable document formats, should include sufficient detail to convey the physical configuration of the AV systems to the installation team. These drawings are also known as “Submittal Drawings,” “Workshop Drawings,” or “Shop Drawings” when provided for review as part of a consultant-led project. Suggested components include, but are not limited to - 1. Title Block, 2.

Cover Page, 3. Standard Details.

B. Facilities Drawings: The Construction Facilities Drawings reflect the details provided in the Design Phase Drawings and include any new, additional, or construction details for the project.

1. Device and Equipment Plans, Sections and Elevations: These drawings identify the locations, physical requirements and relationships of AV equipment within the facility, to scale where applicable, including exact: (a) Projector

and camera locations, (b) Device aiming, coverage, and orientation (c) Integration of AV equipment into furniture (d) Labelling of device type, manufacturer, and model.

C. Systems Drawings: Systems Drawings for Construction/ Fabrication include all of the information in the design documents with additional information required to complete fabrication and installation of the audiovisual system. 1. Functional Diagrams, 2. Equipment Rack Elevation Diagrams, 3. Other Details D. Reference Documentation: Systems Drawings for Construction/ Fabrication include all of the information in the design documents with additional information required to complete fabrication and installation of the AV system. Examples include: (a) Matrix Routing and Preset configuration (b) DSP Configuration details (c) Wireless Mic Transmission Frequency (d) Control Equipment, IT Integration information.

E. Testing and Acceptance: These procedures and their results are carried out and documented in reports. (a) Test procedures are carried out (b) Test report(s) F. Project Closeout: The project closeout documentation is submitted to the owner at the conclusion of the construction phase: (a) Drawings of record (“As-built” drawings) (b) Final software code (c) Final graphics files (d) User operations manuals (e) Equipment owner’s manuals, warranty cards, etc (f) Warranty Support Statement for system.

V. Verification:

Verification of conformance to this standard must include the delivery of the AV System Design and Coordination Components Checklist (below). This serves to verify the following: A. Documentation of Applicability: An outline that indicates which sections of the standard are applicable to the project according to contractual agreements as well as any services not applicable (indicated as N/A).

B. Consideration: Written verification that the service provider(s) have read and understood this standard, and agree to be referred to as the Responsible Party for the applicable sections.

C. Completion: Written verification that the service provider(s) have completed the approved services, indicated by the party authorised to sign as Accepted By.

Verrex integrates Media Wall at Deutsche Bank Sky Lobby in Hong Kong 150 Christie MicroTile display units create spectacular visual impact Located on the 48th floor of Hong Kong’s International Commerce Centre (ICC), one of the world’s leading financial service providers, Deutsche Bank, envisioned a one-of-a-kind media wall for the lobby of their offices inside the ICC. Working directly with the project’s interior architect and AV consultant, Verrex was selected to integrate a seamless canvas of Christie MicroTiles™ to meet Deutsche Bank’s vision.

Challenge Completed in 2010, the ICC is Hong Kong’s tallest skyscraper to date, a 118-storey model of modern architecture encased in glass. In the fast-paced world of finance, the method of delivering a brand and message is just as important as the message itself. When competing with the impressive interior architecture and reputation of your own building the method of delivery needs to be brilliant, literally. The media wall technology integrated would need to stand up to bright, ambient light streaming in from the rows of windows lining the lobby.

The solution would also need to be in harmony with the space’s contemporary interior.

Solution Chosen for its innovative configuration capabilities and DLP® technology specifically designed for maximum image quality in high-ambient light environments, Christie MicroTiles proved to be the ideal solution. As one of the most recent product debuts in the industry, Verrex’s fabrication, quality assurance and installation teams would draw on Verrex’s quality management process to expertly integrate and commission Christie’s advanced technology.

Functionality Overview The system consists of a large Christie MicroTile display featuring Deutsche Bank brand content, information, video communication and digital art images.

Flush-mounted loudspeakers within the display enclosure play audio content and a foreground music system provides audio reinforcement for presentations, video and background audio for the media art images.

The display system consists of a 30-tile wide by 5-tile high display, 150 rearprojection colour video tiles in total, seamlessly interlocked. The display distribution processing devices are configured to distribute video images to

sixteen display clusters at the maximum resolution achievable, no less than 16200 x 2040 (simultaneously accepts up to 16 DVI or RGBHV and 16 different SDI, HDSDI, 3GSDI, component, S-Video and composite video formats). The processor is configured to allow various display options including a single video image with a resolution of 16200 x 2040 and up to 32 multiple video images of varying resolutions and tile sizes to make one tiled image with a resolution of 16200 x 2040.

Sources Video content is sourced from a rackmounted computer system. There are four video source computers configured in identical redundant pairs. The computer pairs function as a primary and secondary system, with equal capabilities. The primary system operates and provides content for the display. The secondary system operates as a backup in case of failure or during maintenance of the primary system.

In addition, there is a video content verification system which consists of two computers configured identical to the primary system. This system is used by the content creator to verify video content prior to upload to the primary video source computers. The two video content verification computers are fitted with sixteen 22” LCDs to preview content.

Additional content sources include a video conference system with codec and camera capable of pan, tilt and zoon functions (PTZ) (camera is mounted on a manual slide-out tray in the display enclosure); an IP-based digital media player; a TV receiver; a ticker-server PC computer; a dedicated computer for presentations; a DVD player and a Bluray recorder.

The audio system consists of high quality, flush-mounted loudspeakers:

dual 4” two-way flush wall-mounted for the general public area and dual 10” twoway flush-mounted subwoofers. The system includes a multi-channel audio amplifier, audio digital signal processing units and audio matrix switcher.

Other Highlights An interactivity function has been built into the system’s capabilities. Utilising content provider software, video events are triggered using signals from two fixed motion-sensitive video cameras.

The interactive feature switches to the secondary imaging computer when no motion is detected.

Korea’s Yonsei Central Baptist Church installs K1 WST® line source system Yonsei takes honours as first church in Asia to install L-Acoustics K1 The Yonsei Central Baptist Church which had the honour of being the first L-ACOUSTICS V-DOSC church installation in Asia, has now become the first church in Asia to install a K1 WST® line source system.

Located in Seoul, the church is one of Asia’s most impressive houses of worship. The entire site occupies a total area of 32,677 sq m and has over 120 rooms. It is equipped with around 200 L-ACOUSTICS cabinets. The K1 system has been installed into the main Jerusalem sanctuary, a 13,000-seat hall with a single balcony occupying three floors of the building, with no visible obstructions such as supporting pillars, allowing everyone a unobstructed view of the service.

The K1 installation came about when Mr Park Byung Jun, who heads the church’s broadcasting team, and Mr Lee Hwan Chul, head of the project team,

together with Scott Sung, L-ACOUSTICS product manager for local distributor Dream Sound, needed to conceal some dV-DOSC delays they were planning to install alongside the Jerusalem sanctuary’s V-DOSC system. In doing so, they examined the possibility of installing K1 instead. Providing 3dB more than the V-DOSC system, K1 was found to give more SPL right to the back of the hall, removing the need for the dVDOSC delays completely.

The installation comprised of two hangs of nine K1 boxes with three KARA WST® line source cabinets and four K1-SB subs per side, powered

by LA8 amplified controllers. For the back rows of the hall, two hangs of four white 8XTi coaxial speakers from L-ACOUSTICS’ Architectural Series have been integrated, blending discreetly into the building’s interior.

Designed for permanent installation applications, the Architectural Series

combines streamlined cabinetry and rigging with a choice of colour options for discreet integration, while providing the same sonic characteristics as other L-ACOUSTICS systems.

“The goal for the new sound design was to cover the audience area without the need for delays or under-balcony systems, guaranteeing a clear view for the audience,” said Cedric Montrezor, L-Acoustics’ head of installation support.

“Dream Sound proposed upgrading the existing V-DOSC/ dV-DOSC to a full K1 system and we helped them with the sound design. Thanks to the K1 rigging, we were able to lower the system in order to cover the under-balcony areas with the main system and to maintain a homogeneous SPL/frequency response coverage on the balcony.” www.l-acoustics.com

Shenzhen Reach solution at the National University Hospital of Singapore Solution enables learning through live streaming in HD quality The National University Hospital (NUH), a member of the National University Health System (NUHS), is a tertiary specialist hospital that provides advanced, leading-edge medical care and services. It is also the principal teaching hospital of the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.

Requirement The Hospital features a Women’s Clinic Center that comprises of two clinic rooms, one classroom and one lab room.

NUH wanted to live stream surgical procedures done from the two clinic rooms to the classroom and lab room for study purposes. The streaming had

to be recorded and available on demand (VOD) to enable those who missed the live streaming to view it at their own convenience as well as for archiving purposes.

Networking Configuration The DSS-R-CM200 server is deployed in a control room and enables the live streaming, records the streaming and enables VOD options. The VGA, HD and SD encoders capture all the different signals: the SD encoders capture signals from the SD camera and the ultrasonic image machine; the VGA encoders

capture the signals from the computer screen for the X-ray picture or other teaching materials; the HD encoder captures signals from the HD camera.

The students or teachers receive the live streaming through the HD decoder which is connected to the IP network within

the Women’s Clinic Centre. Those in the classroom or lab can connect via the IP network to the live streamings through a projector to project the visuals. The IP network also enables users to access the server to get the VODs after the operations.

Tannoy’s QFlex brings clarity to preaching at the CSI Church in India Smart Solution helps church find intelligible sound after 12 years The CSI church is located in the heart of Coimbatore city in the Tamil Nadu state of India. The church dates back to the 19th Century. In the year 1820, Mr John Sullivan, the collector of Coimbatore district, Mr Lucington, the forest officer and Reverend Kittens, the Chaplain, came together to acquire land space to build the church. As the congregation of Presbyterians grew, a committee was set up in 1994 to look into expanding the church. That plan came to fruition in September 1988, when the church was magnificently rebuilt to accommodate the much larger congregation.

Showcasing modernist architecture, the rebuilt church featured a concrete ceiling and walls, marble flooring and glass panels along the side walls, and offered the congregation a sense of belonging and comfort. Unfortunately, the audio intelligibility was greatly affected by sound reflection and reverberation due to the design and materials used in rebuilding the church.

Nearly 10 years after the church was rebuilt, a concerted effort was made to resolve the audio issue. Over the

next couple of years various solutions were considered but the church did not come any nearer to resolving their problems. There was a feeling of fear and resignation that the only way to resolve the audio issue would be to administer an expensive acoustical treatment. Fortunately for the church, like God-sent, Tannoy’s dealer Smart Solutions came into the picture and suggested installing the award winning QFlex 40 system to answer their woes.

A demonstration was arranged for the Sunday service and feedback was taken from the committee members as well as from the congregation. The result of the feedback was a resounding “yes” from the church to procure the system.

Tannoy’s QFlex loudspeakers offered the crisp, intelligible sound that the church was craving for the last 12 years.

QFlex uses multiple channels of advanced amplification and DSP to produce controlled beams of acoustic energy, which are directed on to userdefined target areas. By concentrating acoustic energy in this way, the level of sound reflected off the walls, floors and other hard surfaces is minimised, greatly

increasing speech intelligibility. One of QFlex’s most significant benefits is its ability to control these acoustic beams at far higher frequencies than would normally be achievable. Installed in February 2010, the QFlex system has vastly improved the acoustics of the church, much to the appreciation of the congregation, not least due to the fact that QFlex has saved them from spending a great deal more on acoustical treatment. So then, to get back to the question above and the one I asked again during our conversation, “What type of cable is being used?” The original answer we got was “Cat-5”. Simple, we thought, as the length was not that great. In theory, it should work but out of the blue the client mentioned that he even specified for skew-free cables to be used. “Wait a minute - that was the answer! This cannot be used for Digital products!”

Transmitting Digital signals over any significant run of CAT-5, 6 or 7 cable needs the skew in the cable to give some defense against unwanted interference.

There is also a second reason for the different twist ratios in the cable and that is to eliminate crosstalk as much as possible. Crosstalk is where the signals carried on one pair of wires “bleeds” into the next one, which is a very undesirable effect and can seriously affect signal quality.

On this note then, let me get back to the skew-free cables mentioned above.

Skew-free simply means that each of the 4 pairs inside the CAT-x cable has the

Install the right cable with proper termination

By John Ungerer, Managing Director, Kramer Australia Recently, in a staff meeting, we were discussing putting “Tips & Tricks” on our local Kramer website. This got me thinking….. a lot of what we tell and teach customers either on the phone or in person is in fact just that – tricks of the trade!

Let me use an example from a recent discussion I had with one of our good customers. Prior to this, they had been in touch with my tech support guy over a really “problematic” Kramer box on site. They could not get a set of our PT-571 and PT-572 HDMI transmitters

and receivers to work in this particular installation, and yet all the questions that were asked and answers that were given did not seem to reveal the cause of the problem. “What display is being used?”

“How long is the cable run?” “What type of cable is being used?” (and I will get back to this one). It got to a point where the inevitable starts to happen - the product gets blamed! But we do not give up that easily, so we sent them a new set just in case one of them was faulty…but with the same disturbing verdict being announced in the phone call a few days later: “It still does not work….”

same specific twist ratio. So, why should one always try and specify this if possible when dealing with RGB type signals over Twisted Pair? The reason is simple, really. When converting digital formats like HDMI to be sent over long runs of CAT-x cable, we are still sending ones and zero’s, hence the rules of a normal LAN network applies. But sending “VGA type” signals (RGBHV) you are dealing with red, green and blue analog signals which will arrive at different times at the other end of the cable if the pairs inside are not of equal length, plus the complications of sync added to the mix.

This of course creates unwanted color shifts in the image, resulting in blurred and soft-looking images. If “normal” CAT-5 or CAT-6 has to be used in a particular instance, the effects of skew can be rectified afterwards, but this is a much more costly exercise as a unit like the Kramer VA-10 has to be placed inline to delay the video in order to match it up again.

So, where possible, make sure the correct cable is specified for the job and on the same note, it is just as important to ensure a proper termination of the cable into whatever connector is needed.

I know of many hours and days wasted on sites because of these simple rules being overlooked.
