Many of the countries in the region, especially from SouthEast Asia are keen to get themselves better informed and equipped. However, cost seems to be a stumbling block. The other is the fear that companies have of losing their trained staff, especially where certifications such as CTS are concerned. We need to move away from this mentality because in the long run trained staff will benefit the industry as a whole. There has been a strong emphasis from many including InfoComm International about creating an exceptional experience for the users through the AV solutions that have been integrated into a space. It does not matter if the projects are big or small we need to get it done with pride. This is only possible as more of the industry upgrades its knowledge from something as simple as proper cabling to understanding working on AV from an IT perspective.

A recent trip to the Philippines for an InfoComm Network Day had a very decent turnout. Many were keen to grasp whatever knowledge they could from a short presentation by RGB Spectrum on video processors. Talking to the participants after the event, I learned that many were happy to get snippets of information that would help them better understand technologies. There is keen interest to learn but many are not able to pay big sums. From our conversations this is a recurring theme in India, Vietnam, Indonesia and other countries. SI Asia has decided to help them achieve their goals and hopefully we will get the ball rolling in October for those from the Houses of Worship sector in the Philippines, for a start.

Our planned course in August in Singapore on “Principles of Sound System Design”, by SynAudCon has also had an overwhelming response - again reiterating that many in the industry are keen to upgrade their knowledge. Thanks to our sponsors Biamp and Harman who are looking beyond the bottom line, this course will see over 80 delegates upgrading their knowledge from across the region. Biamp and Harman understand that for the industry to evolve there must be continuous knowledge upgrading. We hope more companies, especially manufacturers will step up and enable structured training not just about their solutions but more about the AV and IT eco-system as a whole.

Milestone AV Unveils Brand New Website INTERNATIONAL: Milestone AV Technologies, home to the Chief, DaLite, Sanus and Projecta brands, has launched a new website with expanded functionality to better serve customers.

This is the result of an extensive, twoyear customer engagement process to help determine the best way Milestone brands can become the easiest partners to work with.

A theme in the research that kept appearing was the desire for one consistent experience across Milestone's brands. This means one account, one website and one phone number.

Customers wanted to access their account information online including pricing, order tracking and product availability. They wanted quick-turn quotes and automated notification on order status. In short, they often wanted many of the same features found on consumer websites like Amazon® and Zappos®.

Currently, customers experience Chief and Da-Lite on separate sites with separate log-ins, multiple accounts, different payment terms, shipping and tools. For an interim period, the individual brand sites will remain live.

The new site provides one place to specify, configure, price, order and track. When customers log in, they will be notified immediately of any issues with an order, what the issue is and how it is being resolved.

Customers will be able to find out their product status – pricing, availability and more. It is also responsive, which means the site will change to accommodate tablets or smartphone screens. So no matter how customers access their info, it will be easy to read.

Historically, Chief, Da-Lite, Sanus and Projecta have operated as separate brands. The brands will continue to live

as such, and this first evolution is focused on commercial brands only. However, customers who have been specified as a purchaser of Sanus products and who are logged into the website will be able to add these products to orders. The Projecta brand, sold primarily in Europe, will also be incorporated in the coming months. www.milestone.com

BECIL Bags Mega Project From HAL INDIA: Broadcast Engineering Consultant India Limited, (BECIL) a Government of India Enterprise under Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, has recently won a prestigious project from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) on a competitive bidding basis. BECIL will design, install, test and commission complete high-end audio visual systems and provide acoustic and interior treatment work for a 800-seat auditorium at HAL’s upcoming ‘Centre of Aerospace Management Excellence & Leadership’ in Bengaluru.

The multipurpose auditorium is envisaged to have state-of-the-art acoustics and professional AV solution in place. Execution of the project is expected to start by August 2015.

Once completed, the auditorium would provide an immersive audio video experience to the user with high-end projection system and 7.1 surround sound audio.

“We at BECIL feel that getting an opportunity to create an auditorium of such magnitude for a prestigious organisation like HAL is a great honour and privilege. Symetrix Announces Third-Party Integration With SymNet Composer 4.0 INTERNATIONAL: Late last year Symetrix announced extensive new support for third-party Dante devices from Shure, Audio-Technica, Attero Tech and Stewart Audio in version 3.0 of its SymNet Composer open architecture design software. Now the DSP specialist has expanded its configuration opportunities even further with the release of SymNet Composer 4.0.

With SymNet Composer, integrators can use a single piece of software to streamline their programming, network discovery and Dante signal routing of SymNet hardware and multiple thirdparty products. The latest software version extends this capability to encompass Attero Tech’s newly-released unDUSB Dante interface.

“Attero Tech’s unDUSB is a very handy, driver-free 2x2 USB-to-Dante interface that will be deployed primarily for computer-based applications in conferencing systems such as Skype and Microsoft Lync,” explained Trent Wagner, senior product manager, Symetrix.

Content for this projection mapping was developed by Montie Paul of W Productions. Another eye-catcher at the show was HDX-W18 FLEX 3-chip DLP projector that relayed all presentations to the venue’s main screen.

Participants apparently had a joyful, as well as informative time with the event programming. “Getting to know the full depth of Barco’s product offering opens up new opportunities for us to offer our customers fully integrated AV solutions,” said Kelvin Ashby King, Principal Consultant, T2 Consulting.

While Day One programming was capped by a very inquisitive panel discussion, where the attendees posed some very thought provoking questions, followed by a gala night, day two had the participants offered a choice of hands-on product demos.

They experienced firsthand how the PFWX-51B projector, complete with the ‘ClickShare Inside’ option, fosters collaboration in any meeting-room setting. Other sessions focused on the KVD near-seamless LCD video walls, showcasing the wonders of advanced projection mapping and help participants discover how to create the perfect mood in a venue with Barco lighting solutions and its versatile consoles.

Extron Asia's Product Showcase A Resounding Success

SINGAPORE: The 3rd of July saw Extron Asia roll out the carpet for its first ever product showcase at its premises in Singapore. To be clear, Extron Asia does conduct regular demonstrations but this is the first time the company organised an open house of sorts showcasing its many solutions. The showcase targeted at system integrators and AV consultants drew a good crowd who were keen to know what were the latest offerings from the company.

The huge office space was divided into 5 rooms showcasing different solutions to allow for good flow as well as to cater to the specific interest of the integrators.

A semi-treated audio demo room showcased the quality of the Extron Class D amplifier in a blind test with a high end consumer Class AB amplifier.

Those who attended it were left amazed by the quality of the Extron amplifier.

Another room was dedicated to video conferencing, showcasing in real time Extron's DSP solutions with AEC features and their Dante enabled amplifier.

Guests set in the typical boardroom set-up environment to experience for themselves Extron's capabilities.

Impromptu Q&A made the experience more enriching as well.

The highlight of the event was a 30 minute presentation about True 4K. Presenter, Idham Aljaroo, brought guests through an enlightening presentation about the different 4K variations, data rate requirement, resolution, frame rate, colour sampling and colour bit depth to enable them to understand clearly what they are specifying. Idham finished his presentation urging the guests to talk to Extron staff about the Extron XTP II CrossPoint system that is able to handle 50 Gbps which exceeds the bandwidth requirements of both HDMI 2.0 and Display Port 1.3 thus ensuring seamless uncompressed 4K switching and distribution.

Also on display were streaming products, fibre solutions, XTP range of transmitters, receivers, switchers, control solutions, DTP crosspoint switchers and extensions, videowall processors and collaboration solutions with Extron technical staff on hand to explain their features and advantages.

The IPX can be controlled via PC, integrated web server or a 3rd party control system. The IPX-TC1’s integrated IP control allows for custom web pages to be loaded for remote control from any device with a web browser. The RS-232 and IR control ports are not just pass-through but integrated into the IP control for use by the served up web pages or 3rd party control. Another industry first for control is channel mapping. Each IPX unit configured as a transmitter can be mapped the same as a TV channel (1, 2, 3, etc.) The unit’s HDMI inputs are assigned numbers in the tenths (Input 1 = .1, Input 2 = .2).

At any of the IPX units configured as a receiver, a remote that looks similar to a TV remote can be used to change channels just like a TV set (Channels 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2, etc.). For an end user, the system becomes just as easy and familiar as changing a channel on a TV, but in actuality they are changing a matrix across a facility.

Finally, the IPX products can seamlessly switch between resolutions/refresh rates and do 4K video wall modes of operation. Sennheiser Unveils MobileConnect In Southeast Asia

The MobileConnect solution from audio specialist Sennheiser allows live audio streaming to mobile devices. Consisting of a streaming server and a specific wireless LAN router, the MobileConnect system provides a closed network that users can connect to and from their smartphone. The selected audio data are transferred to the device via the MobileConnect multi-channel app, thus enabling users to play the content conveniently through headphones.

India – The ‘Next’ Big Thing in AV On its part, SI ASIA confined itself to Indian market specifically, and the findings have been truly impressive- so much so that almost the whole industry felt positive about the growth, with almost 50 per cent being very bullish on the prospects.

It’s nothing new to say India is among the most happening geographies on the globe for audio visual and systems integration business. Its been happening over a few years now, and it promises to continue for years to come, albeit with its own set of challenges from time to time. Second largest market in Asia, India continues to excite the market in its own imitable fashion- probably in sharp contrast to most other promising markets in Asia, with its own kind of SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and strengths).

India – a country of around 1.25 billion people, and a market size of over US$ 4 trillion – is on a cusp of high growth.

With a GDP rate that appears to outstrip that of China, it is already billed one of the fastest growing/expanding markets in the world.

With most growth parameters scaling up impressively, (s)taking an important share of the dynamic is audio-visual industry. With a technologically proactive government leading the charge with a series of potentially growth-effecting initiatives, the industry, for one, appears more promising than ever- though the concerns come chipping in their own part.

According to an InfoComm International market survey, Indian Sub-Continent AVSI industry stood at US$3.7 billion in 2014, and promises to touch US$5.4 billion by 2016. Together with the sub-continental countries of Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka, India has grown at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14 per cent between 2012 and 2014; it now promises to better that slightly by one per cent (15 per cent) by 2016. It goes without saying that India takes a dominant share of this growth.

The industry sees the growth being majorly contributed by corporate segment which accounted for as much as 46 per cent, followed by government with almost 25 per cent, and education segment with roughly 15 per cent. More, the growth is being witnessed maximum in Audio/Video conferencing equipment/ solutions market that appears to account for as much as 42 per cent. The business of displays appears to be another major market with over 22 per cent stake while projectors business appeared third with over 15 per cent.

There are, of course, other areas of potential growth as well. “Specialised applications such as network operation centres (NOC), EOCs, simulation and virtualization projects are emerging as potentially strong growth areas,” felt Murguan Paramasivam, Director, Lightware Visual Engineering, India.

Majority of the industry appears to be reconciling to the fact that its solutions/ business is being increasingly required to work in an IT network infrastructurepointing to the growing convergence of AV&IT into the ICT domain.

On the challenges front, the industry continues to suffer from the dearth of skilled/professional talent. While almost half of the industry surveyed felt lack of professional manpower as the major challenge for its business, extreme price sensitivity of customers has also been a big challenge. It’s been labeled as a “necessary evil” to live with.

“Despite certifications from vendors for their products, most AV engineers do not understand basics of AV as they are just not conversant with basics of AV,” felt Ketul Patel.

About AES67 Standard And What It Means For The AV Industry

AES67 is not intended to replace existing solutions, but to offer means for interoperability among them.

Many of you would have heard about the AES67 standard that was developed by the Audio Engineering Society and published in September 2013. To promote the adoption of AES67, The Media Networking Alliance (MNA) was formed in October 2014. SI Asia speaks to Andreas Hildebrand,Senior Product Manager at ALC NetworX GmbH, the company that is responsible for RAVENNA networking technologies and also a member of MNA, to know more about AES67.

What is AES67 all about?

What loophole or space is this meant to fill which was not previously available?

AES67 is a standard published by the Audio Engineering Society on September 11th, 2013, addressing â&#x20AC;&#x153;High-performance Streaming Audioover-IP Interoperabilityâ&#x20AC;?. It defines a set of guidelines which provide a basis for achieving interoperability between different IP-based audio networking solutions.

There are several audio networking solutions and technologies for professional applications. While earlier solutions were based on Ethernet layer (i.e. CobraNet, EtherSound), more recently introduced solutions and technologies were all based on IP (i.e.

Livewire, Dante, WheatNet, Q-LAN and RAVENNA). However, despite being based on IP, there was not enough common ground to establish interoperability among them, mostly due to varying synchronization mechanisms, transport protocols or data formats employed. This motivated the AES to establish a Work Group to research and define potential interoperability

guidelines. A prerequisite was not to invent yet another, completely new solution, but to try to identify commonalities among the existing solutions and use available technology standards and protocols already employed. The idea was to allow current solution providers to adopt AES67 with as little effort as possible and provide AES67 interoperability either via a special mode of operation or through native support. In other words: AES67 is not intended to replace existing solutions, but to offer means for interoperability among them.

In the overall audio ecosystem, how does AES67 and the solutions fit into the picture?

The advantage of having an interoperability standard for various solutions is obvious: while there may be a sound ecosystem of products already available for individual solutions, none of these solutions can fit all applications areas. And as convergence continues to increase between different application areas or markets, like installed sound, live, broadcast, recording etc., direct interoperability on a networked basis

(not just bridging, employing MADI or other digital / analog signal means) is increasingly demanded. Just think of the case where a RAVENNA-equipped OB van wants to connect to a Q-LANequipped venue and production signals are sent back to a Livewire-equipped radio station (see Figure 1). Plus, it gives system integrators more freedom to choose their equipment based on important product features rather than on the networking technology they adhere to.

What advantages does it bring to the AV industry?

As stated before, interoperability of systems from different manufacturers / brands is now possible and provides a much larger freedom of choice.

Bridging between system segments utilizing “legacy” technology can now be avoided, enabling unified signal flow throughout a complete system. And since the AES Work Group maintained a liaison with the SMPTE Work Group defining the new SMPTE 2059 standard on synchronization, the respective technology and protocol definitions were closely aligned, so that Video-over-IP and Audio-over-IP based on SMPTE 2059 and AES67 can work nicely together on the same network.

How soon will we see AES67 being implemented ?

As far as the solution providers are concerned, they either are already fully AES67 compliant (i.e. RAVENNA, Livewire+) or are in the process of offering AES67-compliant operation modes in their systems. First installations are already fully operating in AES67 mode, although they usually use the additional benefits from the solutions or technologies they natively adhere to.

A good example is the sound installation in a multi-purpose / multi-zone restaurant complex in Finland, which utilizes AES67enabled gear from MNA members ALC NetworX, Telos Alliance (Axia), Genelec and Finnish company Jutel (see Figure 2). AES67 mode has also been used in RAVENNA-based systems during Soccer Championship 2014 in Brazil, Asian Games 2014 in Incheon and the Eurovision Song Contest 2015 in Vienna.

gear from QSC and Dante licensees, connectivity and product diversity will increase significantly and I expect more projects based on AES67 interoperability to become visible by the end of this year.

What if anything will hold this back and why?

I simply can’t imagine why somebody would hold back AES67 interoperability in their products. This definitely would exclude them from the advantage of participating in a rapidly growing market for networked audio applications.

While early solution providers may see an advantage in preserving their niche through a closed-solution business model, history has shown that only open standards have the potential to survive in the long-term. The growing membership of the MNA certainly demonstrates the willingness and also the need to adopt the AES67 standard. www.medianetworkingalliance.com

What has been the response from the industry?

The industry interest was exceptionally high. During the Work Group phase we had participation not only from the respective network solution providers, but also from system integrators, consultants, service providers and end customers (mainly large broadcasting companies). After publication, interest came from all areas of the professional audio industry, including stakeholders from the broadcast, installed sound, live or recording & production industries.

While not everyone is immediately aware that AES67 is “just” an interoperability standard, lacking important features typically comprising a full solution (like advertising & discovery, control functionality etc.), basically everyone acknowledges the importance of this standard.

AVB/TSN And Why It Might Be Almost As Good As Sliced Bread

Martin Bonsoir is based in the UK and is the EMEIA application engineering manager for Biamp Systems. With more than 10 years of pro-AV experience, Martin’s passion for all things audio dominates his professional life and is a welcome addition to his personal endeavours.

Over the last couple of years, Audio Video Bridging – an AV-specific name used to describe a series of IEEE standards enabling deterministic delivery of data – has gained traction in our industry as a key audio transport protocol. But there is a lot more to these IEEE standards than what most people realise. At its most basic, AVB has been compared to other technologies using an “Orange-to-Double Expresso Macchiato” approach. True, they’re both ingested through your mouth (please let me know if I’ve been doing it wrong!),

but there are significant differences.

“AVB” as a name stems from its use in the professional audio industry. But the capabilities of these standards are by no means constrained to just delivering audio and video, nor is AVB a static technology. Work is ongoing to develop those standards even further, and part of that evolution is that it is no longer referred to as just AVB. An increasingly larger segment of the population refers to it as Time Sensitive Networking or TSN. And during this name transition you’ll see it referred to as AVB/TSN. These variations are what seem to have confused some people.

This evolution in naming is only part of dealing with open standards – a first for our industry. Never before have we used open standards to deliver uncompressed, low latency, high quality audio over an Ethernet network. So, misperception can set in. mispercepti Proprietary ttechnologies, by their very nature, enjo enjoy secretive development cycles and a are only shown in public once they ar are a finished product (or one certainly hop hopes that to be the case).

Having witn witnessed the development of proprietary technology; I can assure you that bef before it is introduced to the public in a g glossy presentation, the technology underwent multiple changes of name, fea feature set, and scope. But it all happened behind closed doors. happ With IEEE standards, that W development and evolution happens in the open.

As an engineer by profession and DNA makeup, I don’t particularly care about names. I care about technology and solutions.

I place little importance on whether my needs are resolved by something called “Delightful Voices of Inspiring Angels”

or “TH-65B.” What matters is that the solution delivers, and that its development and support is sustainable into the future.

The constant evolution of AVB/TSN is not only important and encouraging – it is, in fact, vital, as it is symptomatic of protocols that can embrace new technology and paradigms. I will invite you to consider this progress not as chaotic, but as transparent, and a sign of sustainability.

AVB/TSN has already been successfully deployed in professional audio installations, from small facilities serving a limited amount of users to large-scale research and educational centres spanning multiple buildings; its strength being that it enables the system designer to develop a networked media system that fits the situation. This is a huge advantage over having to force the application to fit the limited range of topologies (or other restrictions) imposed by less flexible equipment.

Most importantly, it has also helped immeasurably in the conversation with IT decision makers. This is a conversation that the AV industry increasingly must have, and it makes life easier when it revolves around standards from entities IT decision makers trust – like the IEEE – as opposed to industry-specific organisations.

But the capability of these standards is by no means limited to passing audio over a network. At the recent NAB show, Axon impressively demonstrated true broadcast-quality video distribution using AVB/TSN. They fed a split screen with two streams coming from different hardware, combining together to make a whole image. The synchronization was simply perfect and illustrated a typical capability that AVB/TSN provides.

to handle in-vehicle’s infotainment system in a car with AVB/TSN as the transport protocol. And you know what?

It will hit your street very soon inside the 2016 Jaguar XF. Looking at an even bigger picture, I’m fairly certain we are all aware of the Internet of Things (IoT). A seemingly unstoppable force that we are already experiencing in our everyday life.

Devices are no longer isolated entities, but are gradually reaching to the cloud to execute. This replaces the model of expensive, dedicated boxes of specialized hardware by one with cheaper end points connected through the network to powerful processing centres where the functions are virtualized. Need an example? That’s how Apple’s Siri works.

This trend of device enrichment through network connection is fulfilling the need for smarter, more effective and reliable systems, at a lower cost. IoT brings about a whole range of benefits that result in process optimisation.

And while we may all be aware of the benefits IoT brings to our daily life, we may be less aware that the same benefits are enjoyed in the world of industrial control. Initiatives like Industry 4.0 are encouraging and bringing attention to IoT within industrial environments, or, like some call it, the “Industrial Internet of Things.”

Over the next 15 years, the Industrial IoT could add more than $14 trillion USD to 20 major world economies, according to Accenture1. That is a lot of money and explains why it matters to so many companies – and why it should matter to you and me.

Industrial control and professional audio/ video distribution share the same need for deterministic, low-latency, highbandwidth networking connectivity for time-critical distribution of data. This is

why there’s common interest in AVB/ TSN. Furthermore, the Industrial IoT and the automotive industry teach us that isolated systems using proprietary, single-purpose communication protocols are at a very high risk of being a thing of the past. In a world where machines talk to machines, being unable to share valuable information is no longer acceptable. And make no mistake, we AV professionals, are working in the M2M (machine to machine) space.

Another benefit of open standards like AVB/TSN is they often create more robust ecosystems, because through them the industry avoids being dependent on any single company to manage and evolve the technology.

Many of us saw a bright future for CobraNet when Cirrus Logic acquired Peak Audio. The sad reality is the promise never materialised. The lesson we should remember is that the model of a single company developing a solution and licensing it to many users is a risky

one, and leaves the market exposed to the changing business focus of the licensing company.

In the professional audio world, the AVB/TSN ecosystem is a healthy one. Companies like Analog Devices, Broadcom, Freescale, Intel, Mini DSP, Marvell, Synopsys, XILINX and XMOS produce core technology based on open standards, with companies like Arista, Extreme Networks, MOTU, NETGEAR, and Luminex supplying the infrastructure. That leaves manufacturers like AVID, AudioScience, Beyerdynamic, Biamp Systems, Meyer Sound, Riedel, and the TC Group2 to develop solutions.

This is an ecosystem where any one company can decide to change path, yet the technology will survive. Isn’t that the best way forward?

So, what’s left to be decided is whether the AV industry is ready to adopt open standards. Growing up can be scary. But also wonderfully rewarding. www.biamp.com

Epson! The Japanese projection and digital imaging solutions major made yet another statement of sorts with its manufacturing facility at LiMA Technology Center, in Lipa City, South of the Filipino capital of Manila.

In a rare opportunity, SI Asia was privileged to see from close proximity the genius that the World’s No. 1 projector brand’s manufacturing facility is. Exceed Your Vision – the punch line of the 3LCD projection leader – appeared veritable, as we discovered first hand.

An exclusive of sorts from SI Asia…

FACTS:

8.45 a.m., 22nd of April, 2015, Metro Manila: It seemed like an unusually warm day right up in the morning at the Acacia in Metro Manila –this despite some heavy showers the previous evening. It felt still warmer with Yuta Naganuma from Seiko Epson Corporation, Japan, and Pravin Kumar of Epson India, who were already waiting for me in the lobby, greeting me with much warmth.

It felt a bid flattering too that Epson had flown Praveen from India, and Yuta from their Japanese HQ to help me with the intended guided tour to its manufacturing facility at the LiMA Technology Center- some 100-plus km south of the Filipino capital.

For one, the LiMA Technology Center – said to be Asia’s latest new-generation industrial park – appears from the outset to be a “cool” land mass with a set of geographical and infrastructural advantages. Located in the Lipa-Malvar area of Batangas, at the heart of what is called CALABARZON (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon) region, its green and hilly environs render it cool, while comparatively easy access to capital Manila as well as Atimonan port make it one of the best connected places in the country.

A little deeper peep, as we move in, shows it as a combination of smart economies, strategic location, synergy of strengths, and more. A Philippine Economic Zone Authority-registered economic zone that it is, the 469-hectare industrial estate – with a host of multinational enterprises dotting the area – represents a growth dynamic that is shaping the region’s, if not the country’s economic surge.

An important take in this surging dynamic is that of Seiko Epson Corporation (SEC), the Japanese 3LCD projection and digital imaging solution major who had set up what is claimed to be the world’s largest manufacturing facility for the particular line of entrylevel projection and printing solutions.

As we step into the Epson Precision (Philippines) Incorporated – or EPPI, as the facility is called in short – we’re greeted at the entrance by Hitoshi Hasegawa, Senior General ManagerVisual Products Production Division, and even as I accustom myself with the chilly ambience inside, I observe carefully partitioned enclaves on either side showcasing EPPI products. Amidst all that, I notice on the facing wall –

Hasegawa introduces us to his teamHitoshi Shoji, General Manager; Dong Briones, Manager-key unit production department; Abigaile Jimenez, ManagerVisual Products (Production Division) and Noriaki Takahashi, department manager.

Even as we exchange courtesies to one another, I notice a pale blue shirt, and a pair of shoes suiting my size was kept aside with my name on them to identify; so too for Pravin. “It’s just one small part of our many practices aimed at maintaining optimum cleanliness and uniformity,” explains Hasegawa, while briefing us about the plant and its activities. “After all, the facility rolls out products that are known for precision,” he says.

We slip into the given garb and shoes, and move into the plant. “This is the largest entry-level projector manufacturing facility for Epson, meant for worldwide markets. It works in three shifts of eight hours each,” explains Abigaile Jimenez. “We manufacture almost the full chain of components, barring a few that are sourced from other Epson facilities outside Philippines.”

The two-storey EPPI facility actually handles two very distinct production lines- projectors and printers, juxtaposed, and we consciously confined ourselves to the projector division onlynot wanting to distract from our focus and purpose. This projector division rolls out entry level projectors of short throw, ultra short throw and interactive models

aimed at diverse vertical marketsparticularly education and corporate.

While the first floor is for warehousing the second is where manufacturing and assembling of components are done. The plant produces lamps (light bulbs) for LCD projectors, panel on prism (pop) and other key components. A very important aspect of the EPPI is that the entire manufacture/assembly of projection units is done here under one single roof. While major components are manufactured here, remaining few components or raw materials are procured from other Epson facilities elsewhere.

“We produce lamps of almost all the models. The beauty of EPPI is that we make our own lamps,” explains Hasegawa. “It’s totally in-house manufacturing,” he elaborates, “the entire mechanism of component manufacturing, assembling, and testing is conducted meticulously and, in a professionally guarded environment. The employees handling the processes are both qualified and trained.

While the manufacturing area is clearly demarcated by their components’ manufacturing, testing, and assembling areas – that seem to epitomise the highly acclaimed quality standards institutionalized by SEC – what captured my attention are some numbers and names. “The number, sometimes, refers to the size of the area in square meters dedicated to that particular activity,” explains Jimenez. There are many areas with similar arrangements for products that go to different markets.

Backs up Pravin: “The nomenclature does not mean directly the name of the brand; it refers to the geography where that particular model sells, or meant for based on the regional customization preferences.” That’s an interesting dynamic indicating the projection major’s expansive flexibility to customise products for different marketswhich is actually powered by its R&D competence.

We move onto the POP (Panel on Prism) area which is rather sensitive for its extremely delicate parts and total dust-free maintenance stipulations.

Understandably, people here move in special suits that are apparently made dust-free to begin with. This area functions in two shifts a day while all other sections work in three shifts.

Hearing about the stipulation, the question sprang up: “What is EPPI’s mechanism to ensure or certify that the environment is totally dust-free?”

“Okay, we have a mechanism of measuring the (dust) particles,” Jimenez and Hasegawa take turns to explain the process. “We have a total of 36 stations in this enclosure, we have set up a particle count for each of these stations to check and decide if it is 100 pc dust-free. We check it up regularly to ensure that every station adheres to the cleanliness criteria.” The criteria they talk about here, has understandably been formulated by the SEC and handed down to them to simply comply with.

“We have a global supply chain that ensures supply of components from one Epson plant to the other,” the EPPI team asserts, “Epson rarely outsources its material from outside Epson; it’s mostly from within Epson, or its affiliates. PCB sourcing is one mechanism with other Epson facilities outside Philippines.” The PCB sourcing here happens through the ESL (Epson factory in China).

Discussing the “inspection” of assembled units, we talk about the ‘testing’ mechanisms and practices at Epson, item by item- precision of image throwing capability; contrast ratio; ability of performance precision in diverse climates (temperatures); amount of heat generated, or eco-friendliness etc.

Our walk-through reaches an area that appears to be a common passage and stop-over place. My presumption turns right as the EPPI top execs explain to me the critical role the area plays. “This one is the common area where we conduct programmes such as safety regulations, soft methods in production, etc.,” they say, “this is relevant particularly for the new employees. We often demonstrate the “Do”s and “Don’t”s for the new recruits so that they do not hazard any untoward handling, and affect our production standards.”

I’m guided through the large assembly line for the raw material, coming from the warehouse, and production line.

The assembly area begins with precomponent stage. Understandably each component is inspected soon after its manufacture, and after every stage of its processing towards complete unit build.

Pravin chips in, recalling my earlier question of “what are the few components that are sourced from outside EPPI.” The printed circuit board (PCB) which is a critical component of imaging in a projector build is outsourced from other Epson facilities.

There are two parts to a projector, he elaborates, one is the optical engine or image processing part that involves the lamp and light processing; then the digital image processing part that involves the PCB and other integration ports and buses. So, it is this part – the digital processing part – happening here.

According to Pravin, testing happens in three formats- one for the machines that are used for various functions; two- the processes that are set in for manufacturing; three- the finished goods are checked for expected performance.

“We do everything, including the safety aspects,” explain the EPPI team. “We have an exhaustive list of catalogued items and specifications for each of these processes; we try to comply with practically every item on the list for every single unit,” they elaborate.

For units that are found not complying with specs, EPPI has a separate area and team to verify the source of that non-compliance and then send it to the relevant section to rectify the noncompliance.

After the units are tested for their compliance with the SEC specs, all through their build-up processes, the finished goods are channelized to the warehouse area that is meant for shipping.

Watching an overwhelming scale of finished goods being transported and stacked, I am naturally curious to ask: “what is the production capacity of the plant?”

“At present, we make 181,000 units per month,” informs Jimenez. “Last year, we produced 141,000 units per month,” she

says, adding, “when our expansion plan get complete in 2017, we would make approximately 210,000 units per month.”

Going by this estimate EPPI will role out an awesome number of close to 2.5 million projector units a year post-2017!

That’s a mind-boggling figure! A media release from Epson Philippines had actually stated that the plant rolls out 7 projectors, besides 40 printers every minute. This is still a higher figure of over 3 million units per year!

Considering that the EPPI caters to a worldwide market which has been growing in double digits every year, this stat may be reasonable.

As we walk back to the meeting room, Hasegawa explains EPPI’s essentials like human talent; green initiatives, and SEC’s eco-friendly resolutions, and how they plan to contribute to the regional/ global “eco-nomics.”

An important aspect of EPPI’s green initiatives is harnessing solar energy for its power supply requirement- building a massive solar energy plant for captive power. The idea is to reduce energy consumption by as much as 90 per cent by 2025.

“It’s not just about the quality products that EPPI stands for, but also the quality practices and processes in place,” explains the SGM. “In tune with our HQ’s vision and mission, we strive towards maintaining the credentials by every single act of ours here.”

Yuta - who was flown specially from Japan to accompany us during the visit presented a holistic vision of how Epson evolved through its formative years and became world's number one projector brand, and a powerhouse of technology domain.

EPPI, In Line With The Epson Vision Hitoshi Hasegawa, Senior General Manager at the EPPI, along with his team, responds to some of SI Asia’s focussed questions in a tete-e-tete, post-visit. Excerpts: SI Asia: How would the EPPI facility change the dynamic of Epson business, and the global projector domain?

HASEGAWA: This plant has been set up with the objective of meeting the growing demand worldwide for Epson projectors. That it is the world’s largest facility for this line of projectors- all happening under one roof it adds a great dynamic to Epson’s advantage.

Geographical reach to numerous world markets; competent workforce; aggression in production; aggression in green practices and processes- all stand as USPs to the plant, and brand Epson.

SI Asia: How about technology USP? HASEGAWA: The technological processes we use here are developed, tested and tried at our parent facility in Japan, and they are known to everyone. That the same expertise and competence flows through the production here, it is at world’s best. The new thing is our resolve to better our best.

SI Asia: What manufacturing quality standards has the facility brought to place, or would bring to place when the expansion is complete?

HASEGAWA: Japanese standard(s) of quality will not change from place to place- it’s just the same anywhere and everywhere it goes to. These standards are defined, and regularly monitored by the headquarters. Even when the expansion is complete here, it will remain the same.

SI Asia: Much has been said about EPPI’s adoption of green processes. Would you please elaborate?

HASEGAWA: The practices are in fact set by SEC, with the theme of “Harmony and Co-existence’ that highlights Epson’s resolve to pursue eco-friendly manufacturing processes right from procurement of raw materials to shipping of finished goods, besides contributing to the development of Filipino community. We comply with all that. We participate in the Philippines government’s programme of ‘zero waste’ activity. The plant’s initiative to harness solar energy to have alternative sources and reduce conventional power consumption has been a great stride. We have a mechanism to assess reduction of energy consumption by subsequent stages. The idea is to reduce energy consumption by as much as 90 per cent by 2025.

SI Asia: What human talent pool does EPPI contribute to brand Epson on one hand, and to the Filipino employment domain on the other?

HASEGAWA: We try to make a fine balance of respecting the Filipino human talent, and the highly acclaimed Japanese machinery brilliance in manufacturing. We currently employ about 12,200 people, and we would employ another 10,000 towards the end of expansion. There are certain areas that humans cannot handle, and require machine support. That’s where we employ machines, and it is thus a fine balance. Much of the assembly process is done manually. And, that’s why we have as many as over 12,000 people working here, and we are adding more…

There is a particular design that determines what aspects to be done manually and what by the machines. We go by those practices.

SI Asia: How about the Corporate Social Responsibility factor?

HASEGAWA: We do have a dedicated group for implementing the CSR. That group constantly engages itself in devising several programmes. We do have a set of guidelines for the purpose which we share with our suppliers and we try to follow it every time.

Let's Go Lamp-Free For A Brighter Future

Educating customers is key - Casio

With the release of Slim series in 2010, Casio had introduced a new breed of projectors to the market. Called “hybrid” projectors, these are projectors that use both LED and laser technology as their light source. Touted as a cost-saving and environmental-friendly alternative to conventional lamp projectors, the hybrid has gained much traction in verticals such as education and corporate.

Fast forward 5 years, Casio recently launched a new hybrid model under the Core series, with an aim to make hybrid projectors more accessible to the mass.

SI Asia spoke to Toshiharu Okimuro, Executive Officer & General Manager, Digital Signage Division, Global Marketing Headquarters of Casio, to find out more.

SI Asia: It seems that since the release of Slim series projectors in 2010, Casio has been quite focused on its lamp-free technology.

Can you please tell us what motivated the company to do so in the first place?

OKIMURO: Not sure if you know this, but Casio's company creed is “Creation and Contribution”. So that means we not only have to create a product, but the creation itself must be beneficial and useful to the society. Based on this creed, the lamp-free projectors are one of the products that speaks in tune with our brand.

When we entered the projector market in 1995 with lamp projectors, most models on the market were really big and bulky, so we did a lot of developments and innovations to make projectors smaller and lighter.

When we launched the world's first

hybrid projectors in 2010, we threaded on the same line of thought, “What is the contribution our projector has to the society?”, and LED & laser hybrid technology was the answer to it. A solution that helps to reduce mercury contamination from lamps is a big contribution to the society, therefore it is also a big motivation for us and everyone in the company to continue pursuing this technology.

SI Asia: In brief, tell us what is lamp-free technology and what is unique about hybrid projectors?

OKIMURO: In layman term, lamp-free projector basically means no lamp is involved hence lamp replacement is not required during its term of usage.

Instead of using lamp as a light source, we use a combination of LED and laser technology, hence the term 'hybrid'.

technology, hybrid technology has the best of both worlds.

Of course, there are definitely disadvantages and advantages in all types of projectors when you compare them side by side. Deciding factors depend on what you are looking for and what is your top priority. Some unique selling points of hybrid projectors are: filter-free design, compact size, mercuryfree and lower energy consumption.

Also, for our Casio projectors, they are all made in Japan, giving it that extra quality assurance.

SI Asia: You said that lampfree projectors result in economy savings, please elaborate this using an example.

OKIMURO: Firstly, the power consumption of our projectors is 120 watts. Comparing that to conventional lamp projectors which uses approximately 200-220 watts, the energy you are saving is actually close to half.

Based on recent tariff rates which we have collected from 30 schools (based on a period of 5 days a week and at least 6 hours a day), our calculation has summed up to close to SGD 8,000 savings on utility bills, over a period of 3 years.

And this is just the utility bill, not withstanding the low maintenance costs where end users will not have to change filters, lamps or have regular and frequent servicing. The solution is also ideal for the Systems Integrators as they don't have to worry about finding extra manpower or fitting into the school's schedule to conduct regular service on the projectors – hence addressing the industry's issue of manpower crunch.

SI Asia: What are some of the challenges Casio faced in developing lamp-free projectors?

SI Asia: Which verticals do you think would benefit greatly from hybrid projectors?

OKIMURO: For R&D, besides developing a hybrid projector that is lamp-free & mercury-free, we had to make sure that other projector specs are not compromised. So innovating while maintaining features like compact size, low power consumption, longer life and quality colour reproduction are some challenges we had during the production stage itself.

OKIMURO: Traditionally, the vertical business has been very important for us, especially the education sector.

But this time, with the new projector launched, our target is the entire market, specifically the corporates and SMEs. With the projector priced well - within the reach of many small to medium enterprises' budget, it's a good chance for them to try out our hybrid technology. In the long run, Casio intends to make the hybrid projectors accessible for the mass.

As for sales and marketing, we had to educate customers on what is Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and the environmental benefits of hybrid projectors. Making them understand the key benefits of the projectors is important and we often use the TCO toolkit to explain how conventional lamp projectors can incur high maintenance cost with lamp replacement, as compared to a 20,000-light hour hybrid.

SI Asia: Were there any misconceptions you had to overcome to convince customers at the beginning?

OKIMURO: Definitely the price.

Because we use both LED and laser technology in our projectors, people have the misconception that it's very expensive. So one of the misconceptions we had to overcome is to change the understanding of hybrid technology and TCO savings. Initially the upfront cost might seem a bit more than conventional lamp projectors, but long-term wise it actually costs less. But of course, now with the launch of XJ-V1 which is priced so competitively, we hope to change that misconception once and for all.

SI Asia: In recent years, we saw quite a few projector manufacturers beginning to develop display technologies as well. What are Casio's thoughts on this?

OKIMURO: With display components getting more readily available, the price of Flat Panel Displays (FPDs) have gone down as well. Especially in China where display manufacturers are abundant.

Still, there must be some limitation to this. For a 50” display, customers might get a better price, but for panels more than 70”, I would say projector is more cost effective. So based on cost per inch, projectors will have a better advantage.

Casio is still very much focused on projection technology, unlike some brands who have a different business model. In conclusion, Casio will continue to innovate and come up with better, greener projector technologies for the society. http://casioprojectorsea.com

Zane Au

This issue we are priviledged to have Zane Au give us his thoughts in our Consultant Speak column. Zane is the director of Shen Milsom & Wilke's Hong Kong office and has more than 20 years of experience in the design, installation and operation of multimedia facilities.

Since joining the company in the year 2000, he has been responsible for all of SM&W's projects in Asia, and is in charge of supervising the company's other Asian offices in Shanghai, Singapore and Beijing. SMW founded in 1986 is an independent, global technology consulting firm with over 230 dedicated individuals in 15 offices in three continents.

SI ASIA: Zane, you traverse the region quite a bit. From that perspective can you give us a broad outlook of where each region or country within Asia is in terms of AV technology trends?

ZANE: That is a very broad question and obviously any attempt to answer the question will be somewhat broad-brush.

One way to look at it is to distinguish the very mature markets (e.g. Japan, Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong etc) from the fast-growing emerging economies like China, India and Vietnam etc.

In the mature markets most of the changes in AV technologies tend to be incremental. Newer, brighter and smaller projectors, larger screens (if room dimensions allow that at all) and so on.

You improve the overall AV experience but the application stays more or less the same, until a new AV technology of disruptive magnitude arises: The move to digital video distribution (because of analog sunset), direct-view LED screen getting so fine in pixel pitch to replace traditional projector/screen etc, and people will figure out how to do things in a new way. But then there is always the cost factor to hold back innovations.

On the other hand, many of the emerging markets are relatively free of legacy "baggage" as they start building from scratch. Software-based systems, AV signal transport over IP networks and mobility/wireless solution ideas are usually easier sells in those countries.

SI ASIA: In which countries do you see great potential for AV business and in which respective vertical markets?

ZANE: Of all the developing countries in Asia, China and India still present the most potential for AV business, and Vietnam is not far behind. And then there are vertical-specific opportunities in countries and places like Philippines and Macau (gaming), Indonesia (corporate especially those in natural resources business). As a matter of fact retail AV is strong across the board throughout SE Asia, and healthcare AV looks like a sure winner very soon.

SI ASIA: What in your opinion are three key things that the AV industry in Asia needs to tackle for a better future?

ZANE: Number One: To train our nextgeneration AV professionals to do IT "the IT way". That is the only way for AV to stay relevant in the emerging IoT/IoE world.

Number Two: To really strive for an "exceptional experience" no matter how large or how small the project or the system is. Those who fail to do so will be left at the bottom rung of the value ladder.

Number Three: Instead of re-selling and integrating AV equipment from manufacturers, the AV professional's new tasks are to engineer the solution and to create an experience for our clients.

These are things that are harder to commoditize.

SI ASIA: From a consultant's point of view, what are your challenges in the region?

ZANE: There are a number of major challenges we encounter everyday in the region. Some of them are not limited to Asia. For example, the difficulty to recruit young talent to enter the industry (which results in declining or at least stagnant staff quality and workmanship for many AV companies), fewer and fewer younger engineers are interested or knowledgeable in audio (which "cannot be seen"). For us consultants I guess the biggest challenge remains the same: Asia's relative reluctance to engage and pay for independent design consultant's effort.

SI ASIA: Do you feel that the growth of the Multinational companies in the region is contributing to the better understanding and implementation standards for the AV industry in Asia?

ZANE: My view is it is highly countryspecific. We all like best practices and standards but at the same time if the development in China in the past 10-15 years is any indication, western corporate standards and industry best practices require at least a certain degree of customizations before it can be widely deployed locally.

SI ASIA: What AV technologies do you feel will drive the industry in the next 5 years?

ZANE: I see that in the next 5 years (maybe sooner) AV technologies, except in the most mission-critical environment like a command centre or government plenary hall, will become more and more personalized: Gadgets become an even more important part of our lives.

OTT content streaming gains ground on traditional content delivery. People opting for wireless content delivery for the convenience even if it means a slight signal degradation. All in all, traditional AV signal distribution or transport will become less relevant (as more or more content runs on IP networks), leaving new (a) content creation, (b) AV endpoint equipment and maybe (c) human user interfaces as primary technology drivers in our industry.

SI ASIA: Do you think there some vertical markets that are more AV savvy than others?

ZANE: In the past, there were verticals that are more progressive than others in adopting IT and digital multimedia technologies. Airlines, hospitality and higher education are the first few to come to mind as they have intrinsic requirements in terms of highly complicated user search interfaces, faster and more secure payment transactions, as well as large amount of audio and video materials to be generated, distributed, recorded and reproduced.

On the other hand, as the same set of business technologies (big data, cloud computing, mobility etc) permeates into basically every business type's operations these days, I don’t think there are any verticals that are particularly more technology-savvy than others. And even if we narrow down to AV-savviness, nowadays most business activities including those traditionally “backoffice” type business like manufacturing and logistics rely very much on video (visualization, command and control etc).

AV and multimedia applications are so universal that maybe the real question is what is “audiovisual” now?

SI ASIA: Finally have you come across any project in Asia where you felt it surpassed expectations and can be held to the same status as that of AV projects from outside Asia?

ZANE: In general I'd say many of the top projects in Asia are at least on par with projects of similar types in western countries or globally. The few recent projects that immediately come to mind (and also geographically closer to where I do my job) include Singapore Sports Hub (in Singapore of course), Wynn Resorts in Macau, and Ko Shan Theatre New Wing in Hong Kong. No matter in the sheer size of the projects, AV network sophistication, or the resultant end user/audience experience achieved, these projects are simply world-class.

Recording Video For Sports Analysis Made Simple

Singapore Sports Institute's analytics team works behind scenes during SEA games

athletes, coaches and referees. The software enabled the coaches to view, edit and analyse the performance of their athletes through HD quality videos. Using a private online platform, coaches were able to access the videos using computer or mobile devices such as smartphones or tablets. The software combines technical, tactical and statistical analysis as well as annotation functions that allow coaches to highlight certain executions such as the athlete’s knee angle as he or she is running etc.

significant sports event for the region, the SEA (Southeast Asia) Games opened on 5th June till 16th June to much fanfare. If you were in the city-state during the period, it is impossible not to feel the heat and excitement that were built up to the event.

With 402 events in 36 sports featured, and approximately 4370 athletes from 11 participating nations in the Games, it was indeed an unforgettable experience for both the athletes and spectators.

But besides dazzling ceremonies and adrenaline-pumping sports – made possible by friendly volunteers and dedicated staff, did you know that there was also a team who worked hard in the sports analytics department?

Kept fairly busy throughout the games, the High Performance Sports Analytics & Technology team of the Singapore Sports Institute (SSI) worked quietly behind the scenes to give the games a technology-edge by providing athletes and their coaches with HD quality games video for sports analysis.

What is Sports Analytics?

Not entirely new in the sports world, coaches and sports analysts have been using sports analytics to improve

athletes’ performance for the longest time. Back when we did not have advanced AV and IT technology, sports analysis was done manually.

But with better technology available, sports analytics has become much more sophisticated. Instead of using manual means to analyse data, sports analysts now use computers, videos and specialised analysis software.

For the SEA Games, the High Performance Sports Analytics & Technology team of the Singapore Sports Institute incorporated the Dartfish software which is a video solution that helps provide visual feedback to the

As we welcomed the Big Data Age, data analysis became even more important.

After all, what is the use of having data if we can’t use them? In the growing field of sports analytics, athlete’s performance data and videos collected during competitions and trainings are analysed by sports analysts and churned out as figures and graphs for coaches to work on.

Other than optimising athlete’s performance, sports analytics is also used to determine an athlete’s worth during talent spotting and screening.

At times, the results can also be used to guide coaches’ decisions during games.

Coupled with wearable technology, sports analytic is expected to reach a new level in the next decade.

The Singapore Sports Institute Says

A multiplex solution, the MediorNet network enabled the sports analytics team to monitor and record the multiple games simultaneously in a centralized location. All videos were recorded realtime and in uncompressed HD quality. “(MediorNet) is easy to install and operate.” said Benoit Ammann, Deputy Director, High Performance Sports Analytics & Technology, Singapore Sports Institute. “Everything is connected and it is within the same ecosystem.”

Recording Good Quality Video

However sports analysis wouldn’t be possible if analysts are not able to record good quality videos of the athlete’s performance. To do so, a good ICT infrastructure is required for fast video transmission and luckily for the team, Singapore was prepared for that.

At this year’s SEA Games, the Singapore Sports Institute saw the opportunity to record quality video as the city-state is equipped with high speed fibre optic connection. Making use of the country’s advanced infrastructure – also one of the first few success cases in Southeast Asia, the Singapore Sports Institute’s sports analytics team set up an operation room at the Singapore Sports Hub for that purpose.

Tapping on Singapore’s high speed fibre optic cable connection, the team made use of Riedel’s cutting-edge signal transport processing technology, MediorNet, to create a real-time network of video, audio and data communication within the Kallang cluster. The said cluster consists of the Singapore National Stadium, OCBC Arena Halls and OCBC Aquatic Centre. Some of the recorded games within the cluster include: Netball, Basketball, Table Tennis, Badminton, Tennis, Swimming, Diving, Water Polo etc.

For this installation, a total of six MediorNet Modular frames were used.

Using two pairs of fibre at each location, two video feeds from each locations were fed into individual MediorNet Modular frames. Each frame was connected to two CWDM-8 channels card in a ring topology. For games happening at the National Stadium, the videos were fed via Mediacorp’s OB trucks.

At the main operation room where all the video feeds were gathered from the four locations, there were two units of the MediorNet modular frames with 5 links connected between the two frames and eight uncompressed HD video outputs to the workstation for recording purposes. Providing more than just simple point-to-point links, MediorNet allowed the team to send any incoming signal to any output or even to multiple outputs.

All feeds were live-recorded and had at least two different point of views of the same event. For example in swimming events, one feed was recorded from the moving camera that followed the athletes, while another is a more closeup angle of the moving swimmer.

In this instance, recording video is made easy and convenient, with zero to little latency – a feature the team greatly appreciated. In addition, MediorNet also helped the team to reduce the number of fibre optic cables that is usually required in such a set-up by half.

Before the days of fibre optic transmission and advanced signal transporting processors, sport analysis often involved more hands-on video recording. “(The whole ecosystem installed here) saves us on manpower, where we no longer need to send someone on the field to record live feeds. We can easily tap on existing camera feeds and record them,” said Benoit, on the key benefit of the network.

And what were the responses from the coaches who were the end-users of the solution?

“They like it. This is an advanced service usually provided only at higherlevel sports meet like World Cup and Olympics, so being able to bring it to a regional game has greatly brought up the use of technology in sports analytics in the region.”

“Furthermore, the rise of mobile technology has also given sports analytics an extra edge as coaches can now playback the video on their tablets and smartphones.”

ocated on the East bank of the beautiful Inle Lake in Myanmar, Novotel Inle Lake is the perfect place to stay for visitors to this region.

To ensure the safety and security of their guests, Novotel has equipped the hotel with integrated security solutions from Bosch.

To keep the compound safe 24/7, a total Bosch security solution was installed in Novotel Inle Lake. A surveillance system was needed to monitor and deter crime within the compound and along its perimeter. Bosch bullet cameras with its robust aluminum camera body and built-in infrared illuminator were used to monitor the exterior of the hotel since they are weather proof and ensure effective vision under extreme low-light conditions. Indoor dome cameras were used to monitor the lobby area and corridors leading to the guest rooms

and villas. All the cameras are linked to a DIVAR IP 3000 network video recording manager, an all-in-one video management solution that can manage up to 32 channels.

In the event of an emergency, a public address system was needed to ensure announcements are loud and clear so guests and staff members can be safely evacuated. Bosch ceiling speakers, Bidirectional cabinet loudspeakers, and sound projectors and PLENA power amplifiers made this possible. The public address system also doubles up as a professional sound system, creating a relaxing ambience for guests, all around the hotel, from the spa to its restaurants.

Yes, it does give a feel of that el(ev)ation! If it is an eloquent way of telling the story of Father of the Nation for a commoner, it is an exquisite blend of technology and an ideology of the most unique kind for a connoisseur. Either way, it is a wonderment journey through technology that is heard, seen, felt, and, probably imbibed in a never-before fashion.

Yes, the Dandi Kutir – as the Mahatma Mandir Museum is christened – is a practical showcase of the Mahatma’s simple-yet-exalted ideals in a brilliantly laid backdrop of technology. Part of the ambitiously dreamt project of Mahatma Mandir, which had already made international headlines, the Dandi Kutir AV exploit took the whole concept of spreading Gandhian spirit of life to a new crescendo.

Massive as we have found it, we present in this issue an exclusive account of the mega project in Part-I of the II-Part feature. Get set to delve into it:

Standing Humbled, and in Awe! For once, it feels like that. Watching from outside; understanding its size and spread; then journeying through its scale; and comprehending the spirit of life as personified by one of the most simplest-yet-inspiring humans ever known to people.

At the risk of sounding a bit exaggerating, the Mahatma Mandir Museum – or the Dandi Kutir, as it is called now – probably transcends one’s imagination of scalability- of exploring technology frontiers for spreading a particular philosophy.

The Dandi Kutir museum, part of an ambitiously large Mahatma Mandir project in Gandhinagar, the capital city of Western Indian State of Gujarat, is

arguably among the most incredibly executed audio-visual projects in the country. The world’s biggest permanent, technology-powered museum based on the life and message of one person – Mahatma Gandhi – the Dandi Kutir, perhaps, scores more than any similar structure in the world.

Designed like a salt mound to symbolize the historical Dandi March (Salt Satyagraha of 1930), the conical structure measures 90 meters in diameter, 41 meters in height, spreads over 10,700 square meters of area, with as much as 3500 square meters of exhibition area, and 89 minutes of multimedia experience with as many as 14 distinct multimedia technology exploits.

The AV Scale

The four-storey ensemble of the Mahatma’s experiment with truth, pursuit of purity, peace and prosperity with selflessness seeks to inculcate the same audio-visually in four levels, carefully demarcated, depicting his evolution from Mohandas to Mahatma-I; II; III, and lastly, his legacy.

The all-important aspect of this mega initiative is exploring AV technology to a new high. Instead of using only exhibit artefacts and telling conventional hagiographies, the museum employs the most modern technological means to cultivate new dialogues around the towering global figure that Mahatma was. The museum narrative places the visitor in the centre of Gandhiji’s life experiences and thought in his own words, alongside many people, who inspired and strengthened the ideals he embodied.

Show 1.06 Sabarmati Ashram (Holographic) This exhibit seeks to embody and on the other hand manifest Gandhi's living by example- moral and spiritual purity on one side, and spreading the message of Swadeshi (self-reliance) aimed at building a new economic and social order based on self-sufficient, non-exploitative village communities of the past. It was also a protest against growing industrialism and materialism making man a slave of machine.

Show 0.08 - Contemplation Area This is a semi enclosed area meant for contemplation, once the visitor has been through the whole museum, of all that he/she has seen- to reflect on their thoughts. A very low-lit area with dark wall gives a seamless space feel. The flexible seating seeks to augment the same. In terms of technology, there are two components- the Laser show on a smoke screen, which creates various line drawings of Gandhi and his famous quotes; and the LED screens, which display soothing visuals and calming audio that are abstract and nature oriented. The idea is to make people slow down and reflect on the beautiful world that we could create.

First World War Galleries Redeveloped Rutledge AV at the Australian War Memorial procurement and logistics had to be carefully monitored as the content creators, Holly Sydney, required samples of each piece of equipment to ensure they could test their content on the actual product. This included installing a scaled down version of the 3 x 3 wall at their office in Sydney for testing.

ocated in Canberra, The Australian War Memorial is a combination of a shrine, world-class museum, and extensive archive of artefacts and historical data. The Memorial's purpose is to commemorate the sacrifices made

by Australians during the first world war and serve as public space of respect for those who lost their lives.

As was expected the integration team faced certain challenges which included keeping an eye on equipment revisions and changes. This affected the custom manufactured joinery enclosures and surrounds, thus Rutledge had to work closely with the custom manufacturer Designcraft to ensure that all fittings met the right specifications.

Within the heritage listed structure, the First World War Galleries are a complete redevelopment of the existing Exhibition Galleries with associated plant rooms and services areas.

Another key challenge was with regards to the content production. Equipment

Integrator, Rutledge AV was commissioned on behalf of the Australian War memorial for the redevelopment of the First World War Galleries. This included the supply, installation, testing and provision of audio-visual hardware to design a creative integrated multimedia display platform for the world-class museum. The project was completed in October 2014 in time to coincide with Australia's commemoration of the Anzac Centenary, a national programme that will run from 2014 to 2018 marking one hundred years since Australia’s involvement in the First World War.

A highlight of this project were the soundscapes which are thematically linked to create cohesive sound for the entire First World War gallery. The creative soundscape for the gallery allows visitors to ‘discover’ each exhibit with atmospheric sounds and elements.

by Luke Mynott, Director of Sonar Sound.

There are altogether five different 45-minute soundscapes in five different zones. The zones are focussed on specific artefacts and dioramas. Creating accurate sound direction are a total of 29 Martin Audio DD6 near field monitors which have a very directional field enabling Rutledge to place them in the right positions to get the desired effect.

immersive experience. A Q-Sys Core 250i with Multi track option was used for processing, with the amplification coming from 12 Q-Sys CX 404 power amps.

Capturing The Imagination Of Visitors

Another highlight of the Museum is the integration of eyevis omniSHAPES cube walls in the 1917 section of the museum (7x7 feature wall) and Reflections (6x5). eyevis omniSHAPES are rear projection display modules that are, thanks to their small size and ability to combine into virtually unlimited video wall shapes, ideally suited for creating striking projection surfaces.

Installed by Rutledge AV with support from distributor ITI Imagegroup, the 79 units of eyevis omniSHAPES provide insight in the daily life of Australian soldiers in World War 1 where homogenous black and white representation enables ideal image effects.

Documenting the everyday life of Australian Soldiers during the war, images captured on the photographic plates were scanned in high-resolution and digitally restored for the presentation at the exhibition.

The larger one of the two video walls consists of a 7×7 arrangement display with a resolution of more than 23.5 megapixels.

The technological details for the omniSHAPES were specified by Bruce Brown, Founder and Project Manager at Australian multimedia consulting company Mental Media.

One key challenge of the project was the depiction of black and white photographs on the omniSHAPES. Since a World War canon artifact was set up in front of the wall, most of the visitors do not look at the video wall directly from the front, but from the side, which complicated the presentation.

of colour values and gamma correction through a feature-update in the integrated image processing system of the omniSHAPES. In this way, the representation of white of the single omniSHAPES were perfectly coordinated. On the smaller, 6×5 video wall, additional video footage with different colour elements is presented.

Here, colour adjustment was also improved through the feature-update.

The images for the cube walls are driven by 16 Dataton Watchout outputs from four media servers.

Adding The Touch Experience

Rutledge AV was also responsible for the installation of the fully interactive 3x3 Planar video wall at the Gallipoli dedicated section of the museum. This exhibit shows aerial photography taken during the war; which is overlayed onto Google maps and allows multiple visitors at a time to view each campaign run by the ANZAC’s, via the touch interface of the video wall.

In addition, different constructional standards had to be met too. The display modules were not to exceed a certain installation depth due to the limited space and had to feature front-support.

Through the modular concept of the omniSHAPES, which by default supports front and back-support, and the small installation depth of only 425mm, the omniSHAPES "fulfilled all requirements," according to Norbert Schmiedeberg, CEO of the Australian ITI-Image Group Pty. Ltd. Norbert remarked that, “the omniSHAPES were able to fulfill all structural requirements and at the same time guarantee black and white representation without disturbing colour shifts, even for viewing angles from the side.”

To avoid disturbing the exhibition through operational sounds, the speed and therefore the volume of the fans were regulated manually.

“Today it’s likely we need to use modern media to make history accessible to younger people. With its multi-media approach the Australian War Memorial presents the events of the two World Wars from an Australian perspective.

The 3x3 Planar Clarity Matrix panels with touch overlay

The 3x3 video wall comprises of Planar's Clarity Matrix MX46HDS-L-ERO 46' panels that are overlaid with the Clarity Matrix 32 point touch overlay. The panels offer HD resolution (1080p)with a total of 5760 x 3120 pixels. 3 x multi head PC’s capable of rendering four full HD streams simultaneously send the content via Lightware DVI Tx/Rx’s to the Clarity Matrix processors. The touch interface talks to the PC’s via USB over Cat extenders to allow the interactivity.

Redefining Higher Education Through Technology AV and IT systems enhance collaboration and communications at Duke Kunshan University

uilt across 200 acres of land in Kunshan, China, the recently completed state-of-the-art Duke Kunshan University (DKU) campus is a collaboration between Duke University in the United States and China’s Wuhan University. The plan to build the campus was approved in 2010, with the goal of developing one of China’s most modern learning institutions. To meet this objective, the project required the integration of the most advanced AV and IT networked systems to bring high levels of communications and collaboration to students, faculty, and staff, not to mention ensuring system interoperability among the numerous products and components being installed campus-wide. To turn its vision into reality, DKU turned to U.S.-based Verrex, a global integrator of complex conferencing and collaboration systems.

The large-scale project included outfitting DKU’s Service Building, Conference Center, Academic Building, Faculty Residence, and Student

Residence. All told, the installation encompassed five conference rooms, 28 six-seat team rooms, five 12-seat team presentation rooms, three fitness centers, 193 guest rooms, 20 guest suites, a lobby bar, 11 lounges, an auditorium with "green room," four tiered classrooms, the Dean's suite with boardroom, event space, four seminar rooms, student dining, 16 faculty suites, a café, and 48 dorm rooms.

“There were several priorities to the installation at DKU, not the least of which was delivering a ‘wow factor’ by utilizing groundbreaking technology that is unique to China,” said Bill Chamberlin, CTS, VP of Global Sales for Verrex. “One of the more critical objectives for this technology was collaboration. Not only were tools such as wireless microphones, source inputs, and flat-panel displays required for in-class collaboration — allowing students and teachers to participate and interact with each other — but telepresence, videoconferencing, and audio conferencing systems were

needed for virtual collaboration with speakers from around the world. In addition, presentation capabilities were required that would allow speakers to deliver lectures incorporating a wide range of media. Beyond the classroom, DKU planned to host outside events within its auditorium, which called for the flexibility to adjust the space quickly to accommodate any client request.

Of course, with so much advanced technology utilized across the campus, ease of use was paramount. It was essential that support staff, university personnel, and students be able to easily operate the systems and components.”

The Academic Building

When it comes to the integration of AV and IT on the DKU campus, nowhere is this better represented than in the Academic Building, where Verrex successfully brought together hundreds of components for nextgeneration applications, including simultaneous translation services, both fixed and portable videoconferencing

solutions, as well as full-AV and smallscale telepresence capabilities. Across the building’s high-tech classrooms, the company delivered fully immersive in-class experiences by installing larger-than-life displays and HD audio systems, which allow faculty to leverage more engaging content and visual conferencing sessions with guest speakers. Furthermore, individual tabletop microphones and complete Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) capabilities let students and instructors connect personal components in order to more seamlessly participate, collaborate, and interact.

The classrooms are equipped with Cisco TX-9000 telepresence systems and three 1080p cameras, two at the front of the room to capture students and one in the rear to capture the presenter.

The rear camera incorporates ceilingmounted infrared sensors to track the presenter’s movements and adjust accordingly. To deliver the ease of use the university requires, a Crestron Pro 3 control processor communicates with all compatible A/V devices, simplifying multiple tasks such as display source selection, screen control, audio and video switch routing, volume control, and power control via a 15-inch touch panel. In addition, Crestron e-Control allows for remote control of the AV system from any computer connected to the same network as the control processor.

The Academic Building’s world-class auditorium is equipped with a 10,000-

ANSI DLP projector and seven flat-panel displays, and features a combination of gooseneck, ceiling, and wireless microphones — all managed by a Biamp Tesira® digital signal processor (DSP)based media system. Telepresence capabilities for the space are provided by a rack-mounted Cisco C40 video conferencing system with HD PTZ wall-mounted cameras. An Analog Way SMX250 seamless matrix scaler, Crestron DM-MD32x32 DigitalMedia® switcher, and other distribution components route video signals throughout the system. The auditorium’s podium includes a laptop interface with both an analog and digital connection, while an additional laptop connection is provided in the control room. All laptops can be used for in-room presentations on any of the displays, as well as

viewed by remote participants of a videoconference.

In addition to Cisco C40 telepresence systems, the Academic Building’s conference rooms are equipped with 65-inch LED backlit displays and tabletop and ceiling-mounted microphones. For each microphone, Biamp Nexia TC systems provide automatic microphone mixing and acoustic echo cancellation (AEC) technologies, ensuring that only the microphones nearest the current participant are activated and delivering clean, echo-free audio transmission to remote participants. An Extron amplifier and Tannoy ceiling speaker system provide audio reinforcement. For portable conferencing, the Academic Building features a video conferencing cart that can be wheeled from room to room as needed. The Fametal cart is equipped with a 55-inch LCD display with built-in speakers, a Cisco SX20 Quick Set system, a 12x zoom 1080p camera, and a Vega Custom input/output rack plate. Two wired microphones connect directly to the cart for audio pick-up.

“In a project of this magnitude — spanning two continents and cultures — it’s hardly surprising that there were a number of challenges involved,” added Chamberlin. “The biggest of these involved incorporating the immersive Cisco TX-9000 systems in the Academic

in the U.S. was available in China and couldn’t be implemented as specified.

To resolve these issues, Verrex tweaked deliverables from both a technical and financial standpoint to meet the project’s objectives. As many larger companies do not keep local stock in China, defective units could not be easily replaced. Verrex negotiated with upper management and ownership of several manufacturers to get goods shipped quicker.

Event Space

Building’s classrooms into a traditional AV design. This had been done at Duke University in North Carolina, but never in China. In addition, over the course of four years, many of the TX-9000’s specifications changed and Cisco had made several updates, such as changing from IP-based to USB-based camera control. We needed to address these issues to effectively install the telepresence systems. Furthermore, from a logistical standpoint, the TX-9000 development kit was not certified for import into China. Only the complete system could be imported, which included unnecessary items such as furniture. We coordinated with Cisco and DKU to import the entire system.”

Other technical challenges in the installation involved microphones.

For example, the Academic Building’s classrooms feature 50 Shure tabletop directional push-to-talk microphones, in addition to gooseneck microphones at the instructor’s console and the mobile presentation desk. With so many microphones in a single space, managing them was a key concern. Verrex addressed this issue by specifying Biamp Tesira systems in the classrooms. In areas utilizing wireless microphones, such as the auditorium and various conference rooms, Verrex was faced with different regulations and audio interference levels than in the U.S. As a result, the company needed to find open channels and spent more time on the conditioning side of the implementation than in the U.S., where radio frequency is more regulated.

The selection of Shure wireless microphones — which can scan spaces for interference — helped minimize the installation time.

In addition to radio frequency regulations, standards vary between the U.S. and China when it comes to conduit systems and weight limits for installed systems, making it more difficult for Verrex to make changes to any of the campus’ equipment. Beyond the sheer scope of the installation, it also was challenging to keep the project on schedule due to offsite fabrication, which is often done in the U.S. but is relatively new in China. For specific rooms, furniture was also often delayed, resulting in temporary installations.

With offices in Shanghai and the United States, Verrex was able to bridge the gap between both countries to mitigate other challenges related to time zones, logistics, language, and other onsite operational requirements to deliver the gigantic project on time. Applying its successful global project model, the company provided full engineering, project management, procurement, and installation services for the hundreds of complex AV systems across the new campus. Project management services included international coordination and after-hours support. For example, several engineers spent hours tweaking DSP files and modifying settings on systems such as the Biamp Tesira for the installation.
