InfoComm India Roadshow 2012 to expand to cater to increased interest INDIA: The number of AV manufacturers wanting to join the InfoComm India Roadshow is growing and as a result the organizer has increased the exhibition space in 2012 to cater to the higher demand.

InfoComm India 2012 Roadshow takes AV companies on a sales and presentation circuit of three Indian cities in a space of one week. In 2012, the event will be held in new and larger premises: 13 February: New Delhi - The Ashok 15 February: Mumbai - InterContinental The Lalit 17 February: Bangalore - The Lalit Ashok “The number of participating companies has been increasing since we first started our India Roadshow three years ago. Based on the space bookings we have received right after the close of the 2011 event, we expect that exhibitor participation will increase by at least

70% for 2012. We have therefore had to secure new venues with larger space,” said Mr Richard Tan, General Manager of InfoCommAsia Pte Ltd. “This shows that India is an important market for AV companies,” he continued. The Indian sub-continent market for pro AV has been projected to reach US$2.66 billion by 2012, according to a global market study by InfoComm International®.

Pacific Media Reports 13% Year/Year Growth in Projector Units During Q1 International: According to Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the worldwide market information experts on front projectors, the worldwide front projector market grew 13% in the first calendar quarter of 2011 from its level in the first quarter of 2010.

PMA divides the front projector industry into three brightness ranges, each associated with its own set of buyer types and applications: New Era (under 500 lumens), Mainstream (500 to 4999 lumens), and High-End (5000 or more lumens). And each of the three experienced very different year/year growth rates during the first quarter, reflecting their relative sizes and ages: the newest and smallest in revenue terms, New Era was up an impressive 95%; the oldest and biggest, Mainstream was up only 3%; and the intermediate High-End was up 29%.

But even though the Mainstream range as a whole grew slowly, there was considerable change in the product

The First installed Diamond Vision OLED screen in Singapore

SINGAPORE: Singapore’s first installed Diamond Vision OLED screen is located in the lobby of the Mitsubishi Electric building. Visitors have been captivated by the brilliant and splendid visual information showcased on the largescale screen that measures 3.1m width by 1.9 m height. The screen is composed by multiples of small OLED modular blocks to produce an impressive 143” diagonal display with a maximum brightness of 1,200cd/m².

Mitsubishi Electric’s prime objective in developing OLED was not as a replacement for LED or LCD, but as a completely new class of display product.

Its performance matches the very best high-resolution LED screens, yet it is significantly easier to install as it is much lighter and thinner than an equivalent LED screen and so can be installed in places which were previously thought impossible.

About OLED screens:

OLED pixel structure: The screen uses organic light emitting diode (OLED) as its light source. The OLED pixel consists of an anode and cathode separated by a thin organic membrane. Light is created with a process of electro- luminescence (EL) by applying voltage across the organic membrane. Colour is created by “pixelized” red, green and blue electroluminescent dots.

The Diamond Vision (OLED) Organic Light Emitting Diode screen is capable of seamless and vivid images. With the OLED, screen limitations and restrictions for installation of display systems as well as excessive natural light conditions are resolved. Built by connecting a number of standard modules, the large indoor display screen is fully scalable and fitted seamlessly with just about any size or shape display being possible - even curves. It is suitable for installation in relatively brightly-lit areas such as commercial facilities, stations and airports because the light output is far higher than LCD displays (up to 2 times), making OLED suitable for high ambient light areas.

The Diamond Vision OLED is scalable and allows flexible size or shape even against rounded surface while maintaining a high level of picture quality and visibility. It offers various shape such as ring, concave and convex screen. The screen depth of 97mm about

1/3 of LED wall offers the possibility to install the screen in a limited space such as narrow paths and station concourses.

Lighter weight about 2/3 of the same dimension LED wall contributes to the ease of transportation and installation.

CHINA: A DIS digital conference system from the DCS6000 range was recently installed at the Provincial People’s Congress in Hunan Province, in the city of Changsha. The installation consists of two central units (CU6011) with one unit operating as a back up. As a safety requirement request from the end-user and to ensure redundancy a switcher (SZ6104) was connected to the two central units, thus enabling automatic change to the back up unit should there be a need.

The conferencing system featured the FC6021 Chairman unit and 149 FD6021 flush mounted delegate units that were attached with the elegant and slim 50cm long gooseneck XLR microphones (GM6524). Junction boxes (JB6002) were also installed to secure any breakage in the CAT5e daisy chain.

Besides running the entire system in the Chinese language, various DIS software applications such as the DIS user application (SW6008), mimic display (SW6018), microphone control (SW6010), multi-language screens (SW6050) enabling the system to set preferred language to user profile were also installed along with AMX control and external projection applications.

DIS China distributor Wincomn Technology was responsible for the installation. “Wincomn did an excellent job meeting all the requirements from the end-user. With this

The organizer of InfoComm China has decided to increase exhibit space from three to all four halls of the China National Convention Centre in Beijing for the next presentation in 2012. This announcement was made following the excellent exhibitor experience at InfoComm China 2011. At the close of the 2011 event recently, more than 92% of exhibitors have re-booked their booth space - with many requesting for bigger booths - for the next InfoComm China, scheduled for 11-13 April 2012.

There is no doubt that China continues to pull great interest from AV manufacturers as it helps to contribute to the bottom line of the companies. To get a better understanding of the Chinese market, we spent time at the show floor interviewing those present on their views about the market.

In the residential segment we will continue to see more and more opportunities as the average Chinese lifestyle becomes more sophisticated. To help us maintain strong support for our growth here in China we are looking into setting up more facilities especially in the western region of China, which we hope to accomplish as soon as possible.”

Christie celebrates its 10th Anniversary of its presence in China this year. Its first office in Shanghai started in 2001 manned by four staff.

In 2003 Christie opened its

Beijing office and in 2004 they opened a Wholly Foreign Owned Enterprise in Shanghai so as to able to import spare parts easily which would enable Christie to better service customers with quicker delivery. 2009 saw Christie open their service centre in Guangzhou and 2010 saw the opening of their factory in Shenzhen. Ms Lin Yu of Christie Asia Pacific informs us that future plans include opening an office in Guangzhou and further on offices in the western and central region of China to service and support customers from those region. “We have seen constant growth in our business since we started.

In fact revenue has grown 25 times since 2001,” says a pleased Lin Yu. In 2007, Christie supplied solutions to the Great Hall of the People, which is an important venue for the Party and state affairs as well as diplomatic activities.

Lin Yu considers this as a milestone for Christie as this installation paved their way into Government projects.

This was then followed by two major events in China that affected Christie Digital in a big way – positively that is. The Olympic Games in 2008 saw 147 Christie Digital projectors deployed.

“The games propelled our branding. We showcased to China that not only did we have the technology to meet their needs but also how our solutions can be used creatively to create exciting visual impact. The games definitely lifted our presence in China.”

This was then further augmented with the Shanghai World Expo where over 600 Christie projectors and display devices were deployed. “The length of the event showed the quality and reliability of our products and our service.”

Christie’s digital cinema solutions in China contribute to a big portion of their sales revenue. “We have over 2500 2K projectors installed in China. Our clients include Wanda which is the largest and biggest high-end cinema chain in China as well as the other big players Shanghai Film Group and China Film Group. They are willing to pay high premium for our solutions because they are aware of the quality and reliability of our products.”

In line with this, Lin Yu states the Shenzhen Factory will be producing more digital cinema models to cater to the growing demands. The factory will also expand the production of business and control room products. In the pipeline are plans to hire a full-fledged research and development team for the China factory.

As for digital signage solutions such as Christie’s MicroTiles, Lin Yu expresses that using of new technology for digital signage is only just beginning in China.

“We are confident that our digital signage solutions will pick up in China in the coming years as the industry and end-users better understand the technology and use of the solutions.”

At InfoComm China, Christie’s booth’s theme was about Green Technology.

“Our continued pilferage of earth’s resources has made it unsustainable.

As citizens of Earth we need to be more environmentally friendly and not deplete natural resources. We take this very seriously at Christie. Our display solutions are energy efficient and we are the first company in the AV industry to attain RoHS in 2005. It is not just the end product but the entire process from start to end that has been geared towards Christie being more environmentally conscious,” says Lin Yu. On a final note Lin Yu highlights that growth in China for Christie will be dependent on three major factors. “First we must continue to provide better service and better products and not rest in our laurels. Second we will need to continue to develop a network of distributors and dealers and build stronger relationship with them and finally we need to build a stronger local team.

We will continue to enhance the capabilities of our local team so that together with our distributors and dealers we would be able to provide total customer satisfaction.”

Extron has had a sales team present in China since 2003. They have since expanded with presence in Beijing, Guangzhou, Wuhan, Chengdu, Sanyan and Shanghai. The Shanghai office which was established in 2005 is their largest facility in China as it features a training centre, provides customer service and holds inventory. “Extron will continue to increase its local presence in China with expansion plans to second tier cities in China. The market has been growing due to re-construction, infrastructure development, set-up of regional offices by multi-national companies as well as China holding some major world events in the last few years,” says Mr Jeff Gibson, Vice President of International Sales and Marketing.

Gibson adds that in the 4th quarter of this year, Extron will be opening a training centre in Beijing as it continues on its expansion path.

Last year Jupiter set up a sales and service office in Beijing and has intentions to end up with an additional 7 sales representative offices by the end of this year. Mr Chuck Kelly of Jupiter Systems comments, “China is a dynamic market. You need to keep up with the changes and respond quickly. Thus our explansion plans fit in with this requirement. China is a huge growing market and we have made and will continue to make a huge commitment to grow in China. Our control room solutions can be found in the security, transport, coal mines and military segments in China. Our aim is to be known as the leading Visualisation Company in China. Infrastructure growth is all over China and we want to be sure that we are there to meet customer requirements.” Chuck continues, “We have been very fortunate because the people that we have on board are really good and dependable. I strongly believe my staff are dedicated to Jupiter and they really push forward for the company and this has helped us tremendously in growing our business. China provides 20 to 30% of worldwide sales for Jupiter.”

Jupiter Systems is continuing to push the envelope in terms of engaging customers. “We already do road-shows and as we put sales representatives in new cities we will bring the roadshows to those cities as well. We are also revamping our China website which will include online training which will be beneficial,” says Chuck.

According to Chuck, Jupiter Systems can now be considered a full solution provider. “Earlier we did not have low cost controllers but that is now resolved with our 500 product. As for warp blend applications it is now part of our pixelnet node solution. Another very interesting technical product is our Teranex video processing equipment that enables 2D to 3D conversion. Teranex was purchased

by Jupiter Systems 2 1/2 years ago.

Teranex adds value to our visualisation ambitions. Since May 2009 we have been pushing Teranex solutions to most of the provincial TV stations. I would say we are engaging at least 30% of the converters market. Teranex also provides us with the ability to divert from the broadcast sector as we are beginning to attract attention from multi-media companies who are keen to deploy this solution for the events and concerts markets.”

As part of being a full solution provider, Jupiter intends to continue to develop related products to the market. “The one thing I would like to do is develop software and hardware engineers in China so as to support our partners and customers even better and that would be my target for the future.”

Onelan China was established two years ago with an office in China that provided support to distributors and dealers. Mr Bruno Villette of Onelan China is confident of a revolution in the digital signage segment in China. “In the early years it was about educating the market about digital signage and now it is beginning to bear fruit. Customers now better understand how digital signage can be implemented and I believe this will continue to improve. We have had recent success with hotels, education facilities as well as corporations though they were mainly foreign owned.

However we are confident that this will trickle down extensively to the local segments as well.”

Shanghai Danny Automation has been their distributor over the years and Planar just added in April this year a second distributor, Intech, as part of their expansion plan. Mr Robert A. Stewart of Planar comments that the last six months has seen Planar’s business achieve what they had achieved in the previous 12 months. “We are very positive about China and we believe our business will become stronger over the coming years. China still has a long way to go in terms of infrastructure throughout the country and thus we are

We are confident that we will get business in China once the market understands how our solutions can be integrated easily and effectively to achieve optimum results.

China is growing in many segments and our solutions easily fit in within all the segments and we are confident our planned programmes together with our new distributor will yield results in the coming years.”

Mr Max Zhou of Shenzhen Reach is also feeling very upbeat about their growth in China. Shenzhen Reach offers video recording and streaming solutions. “The Chinese government is putting in investments for the education market and we are well placed to take advantage of this. We have also identified a new segment for our solutions, which is the health sector where we offer a cost effective solution to that segment.

We are educating the market about how our solutions fit into their needs and this has yielded in more SIs and end-users approaching us.”

Being a high-end product it has taken us much longer to achieve market share in China but this is changing quickly as there has been a sudden increase in more customers accepting our solution. Our ceiling visualizer does very well for us as it is niche quality product. Generally we are very positive about China and we project a 20 to 30% growth in the next few years.”

So it was with apprehension that most exhibitors approached the 2011 edition. Their fears were unfounded as PALME Middle East had one of its most successful years yet with an increase in visitors. There was also a 15 per cent increase in exhibitors that helped create more buzz in the exhibition hall.

The event offered 18 exclusive presentations at the three-day PALME Conference, where industry experts examined the future of the lighting and integration solutions industry, spotlighted the latest technical advances in projection technology, and for the first time explored technological solutions for the building and construction industry.

“PALME Middle East has always been seen as a comprehensive exhibition with a broad but focused scope on professional lighting, audio, music, entertainment, audio visual and systems integration solutions,” said Eben Botha, Exhibition Manager, PALME Middle East.

Among the highlights of the three-day exhibition was the PALME Middle East Awards, which took place at a glittering ceremony on the second day of the show, where innovation and technical excellence were duly rewarded in 13 separate categories.

Ferrari World, the world’s largest indoor theme park, which opened in Abu Dhabi late last year, lead the way at the awards, taking home two separate gongs on

the night, including the Best AV / Video Solution in a Commercial Development, and the Best 3D Projection of the Year for their spectacular ‘Speed of Magic’ show.

Other winners included Christie Digital, the visual solutions provider, which took home the award for the Most Innovative New AV Product of the Year for their new Christie MicroTiles product, and Fisher Marantz Stone, which topped the Best use of Exterior Lighting category for their work on the world’s tallest tower, the Burj Khalifa.

Magenta have always been and remains the Industry leader for Video extension, distribution and switching. We are very focused on what we do and it is important for us that we work with distribution partners who are capable of providing a high level of technical support, advice and solutions to the channel. Mindstec fits this bill covering the Middle East for us.

Unfortunately, quite often Video extension is an afterthought, but if not chosen correctly it can compromise the success of the whole project. At Magenta we have built in many features to our products that essentially take the risk out of the equation. We frequently get called in to help solve issues where other vendors product falls short, which we of course like to do. However our aim, working with Mindstec is to educate and improve awareness within the channel so that Magenta is the first choice and not just used to fix issues.

Since PALME last year, we have been focusing on the Middle East, SARC and Africa region as we see a lot of opportunities. We are continuously looking to strengthen our office with demonstration and academy facilities. In fact at this show we are conducting seven classes for our partners and specialised groups and are also involved with the Projection Technology conference as a moderator. We have been present in Dubai for some time now since 2002/2003. Tim Wood had joined us 18 months ago and we also have Alexis and Hashen who are our technical sales/field engineers based here. There are many things happening in the region and with our strong foothold in the oil and gas industry in Norway, we feel that we can add value to the same industry here in the Middle East region by replicating our experience. There are also other segments such as visitor attractions, public displays, very specialised and specific control and command rooms as well as advanced meeting rooms within the corporate sector that provide AV manufacturers with great opportunity.

We also see a lot of opportunity in the Education market as well.

The Middle East region offers us tremendous growth opportunity and we are confident that once a client uses Magenta they will stay with us.

Currently, I would say most of the opportunities lie in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Abu Dhabi and Iran. With our particular solutions, government projects are where we see most of our opportunities. We have already doubled our business in the last four months of this year compared to the whole of last year and we are very enthusiastic and optimistic of the future for this region.

The main role of our technical engineers is to support sytem integrators to help ensure successful installation of our solutions. For instance, as part of this strategy we are looking to have our solutions at Flagship stores to differentiate ourselves from our competitors. Specialising in interactive and videoconferencing solutions,we established an office in Dallas, USA mainly with the intention of ensuring copyright protection for our solutions. Wavex Touch main office is in Dubai and we also have offices in India, where most of our software programmes are developed and Africa.

Wavex Touch has used the PALME Middle East platform as a worldwide launch of our solutions. Key segments for our solutions are the education, corporate, retail and public space areas.

At the show Wavex Touch showcased three product ranges in relation to our interactive technology solutions.

These were interactive whiteboards which featured aluminium frames and are scratch proof resistant and comes in 78”, 88” and 108” sizes; integrated LCD panels which range from 32” to 65” and an interactive overlay solution that was produced together with Next

Window, which instantly converts any panel or whiteboard into an interactive solution. For video-conferencing, we are showcasing a standalone solution as well as a two screen solution.

Also showcased was an interactive class management software specifically targeted at the education market. In a nutshell, the software enables educators to test student capabilities via a Q&A test and then through the results group the students specific to their learning abilities and provide the students, through the software with tailor made Q&As and learning tools that are appropriate to their learning abilities, thus enabling the students to learn at a pace that does not overwhelm them.

We are providing cost effective solutions and with our Wavex Touch Middle East office we are able to deal with the market directly and are confident that we would make decent inroads in the region. One advantage is that we are able to tweak the software in terms of language and

Tannoy Middle East enjoys well-received seminar in Dubai Dubai’s DUCTAC theatre was the destination of choice for many of the key regional AV integrators and audio consultants on Easter Sunday, to attend the Middle East Pro Audio Seminar, organised by Tannoy Middle East with support from Lab.gruppen, Lake and Biamp Systems. The successful 1-day event attracted over 40 attendees and was very well received by all accounts, setting a new benchmark for other such events in the future, both locally and in other territories.

The unique invitation-only event was aimed at audio professionals throughout the region with an active involvement in the installed sound market, designed to give them an opportunity to discover the latest product innovations from the TC Group’s pro-audio brands; namely Tannoy, Lab.gruppen and Lake, as well as some insight into the market-leading DSP install solutions from Biamp Systems.

The well-equipped community arts theatre is one of Dubai’s best kept secrets and proved to be the perfect venue for demonstrating Tannoy’s VQ Series high performance point-source PA system and the company’s highly versatile QFlex digitally steerable column array. Attendees were able to

appreciate the full performance potential and scope of the products’ capabilities in a comfortable environment reflective of a typical working application as well as learn about the additional tools and enhancements to the systems that have been recently made available.

In a notable coup for the region, delegates were also treated to the very first public demonstration of Tannoy’s brand new VX Series and VXP Series, the latter featuring Lab.gruppen’s brand new IDEEA™ (Intelli-Drive Energy Efficient Amplifier) power module, ahead of the official debut demo at the InfoComm show in Orlando in June this year. Unilever’s most innovative, ecological and user friendly facility worldwide Hewshott International devises, designs and creates this unique space innovative, ecological and user friendly facility that Unilever occupy worldwide.

Reception

The dynamic and diverse nature of Unilever’s business is evident when first arriving at the building. The first implementation of Christie’s Microtile video wall in Singapore displays some of the many video and moving graphics produced for Unilever. Their TV commercials, advertising and internal communication messaging are delivered in real time, centrally controlled with access to their worldwide database.

Driving this is the AMX IPTV solution with multiple digital signage servers, and as that technology becomes more complex and capable, there’s a natural upgrade path.

When Unilever signed up to their new building in Singapore at Mapletree Business City, they signed up to make a statement. In a world where technology can deliver solutions that are limited by imagination, Unilever turned to one of the world’s leading independent AV consultancies, Hewshott International, to devise, design and create the most

To maintain the look and feel, a similar approach was taken through to the internal reception on level 6, where further Microtiles are configured to run more visual material, but in a different format. The dynamic and ‘nonconformist’ nature of Christie’s product allowed the unusual aspect ratio of six tiles wide in a horizontal strip. This gave a resolution of 540 x 4320 driven by an Apple MAC, and presented new scope for Unilever to display material in formats outside of standard video screen ratios.

The reception is the hub for the buildingwide PA system. This is controlled using a wireless AMX touchpanel and a Biamp DSP. Strategic to this design decision was the benefit gained in using a Cobranet system, which allows for future expansion and flexibility. Multiple zones are available throughout the floors and the DSP’s features are presented on the touchpanel as a very user-friendly GUI that allows for quick and intuitive use and caters for different members of staff, who may have little or no training.

Hair Salon and Spa

On the same floor, there is a hair salon and a spa, each of which required a sound system, but with no space for any equipment racks, this presented a challenge. High-grade ceiling speakers and sub-woofers are linked to remote

To overcome this, Clockaudio pop-up microphones were installed on the tabletop, and hard wired XGA cables were provided below the table surface to provide back-up to the wireless system – these were integrated into Extron’s latest Cable Cubby retractor series. A Kramer/Sierra matrix switcher handles the large quantity of inputs and outputs, and this is located in a rack outside the room.

Through this, users have access and control over the basic features of the media servers. The network media servers are located in the main equipment rack room but are fully accessible anywhere in the building under a permissions management solution.

Executive Boardroom

The boardroom is a challenging space and, during the design phase, was one of the primary focus points.

To meet Unilever’s specific needs, conventional thinking was thrown away and Hewshott’s consultants relished the opportunity to develop a fresh approach to the corporate meeting environment. The room needed to maintain the services and facilities demanded by a boardroom of an international firm, but the nature

of Unilever’s business meant it had to switch to different types of meetings, presentations and workshops quickly and seamlessly.

Hewshott specified a fixed Stewart projection screen, combined with a Christie projector sitting in a motorised projector lift. To accommodate the varied presentation styles, the WOW Vision wireless presenter system was chosen because it meets the demand for endless numbers of participants to connect to the various displays and stream high resolution video. There are two large Samsung 65” touchscreens at the front, one on each side of the fixed projection screen, as well as two Smartboards at the back of the room that are used in workshop configurations.

On the audio side, it was important that the table surface is as uncluttered as possible, but with a sizable room, table

Unilever had an existing room booking system, and Hewshott was tasked with devising a new solution that integrated their meeting room booking software with a control system that accommodated resource management.

After careful consideration, AMX’s RMS software met the requirements, and RMS is used as the graphic display. As the majority of meeting rooms have glazed partitions, mounting the panels outside the rooms was achieved by placing the AMX touchpanel into a brushed aluminum pod, specifically designed for this requirement.

Kitchen

The diverse range of products and brands that are part of Unilever brought Hewshott into the kitchen.

Hewshott has recent experience of a similar requirement – through work completed on teaching kitchens at an education facility north of London.

Education and industry have different needs, but the principles are similar,

so drawing on this UK experience, Hewshott designed a full AV system for a live demonstration kitchen.

The AV systems in the kitchens are under the full control of chefs and cooks, both in-house and guest.

Appreciating that this system had to be easy to use, but also powerful and effective, significant time was spent consulting with Unilever’s award-winning chef to develop a solution that can be used with very little technical understanding or AV knowledge. Hewshott’s consultants drew on their experience of high-end domestic design work and developed a solution that is intuitive but meets the varying complexities of Unilever’s requirements.

The kitchen area itself is fitted with discretely located, dual high definition fully pan tilt and zoom cameras, which can be aligned to a combination of close-up presets as well as manually controlled configurations for one-off sessions. Careful planning with other consultants was required to ensure condensation did not form on the lenses and to protect the camera’s electronics from high humidity and a hot environment. Voice was carried using cardioid wireless mics. The high levels of ambient noise that are to be expected in a kitchen had to be overcome in order to achieve effective sound reinforcement. An array of recessed screens shows the more intricate demonstrations, and a central hard disk recorder was also used to record this sometimes oneoff material for distribution or safe keeping.

Market Research Facility

Unilever’s market research facility demanded a cutting edge design, and Hewshott were tasked with coming up with unique solutions.

This particular area has constantly evolving requirements, dictating that any solution must be future proofed, and must use the latest and emerging technologies and practices. The suite consists of four main areas: live Retail Lab, a Virtual Lab, a Knowledge Centre and a breakout room.

The Retail Lab was specified with dual projectors providing any shop background around the world, and respondents are invited into the space.

Three ceiling-mounted cameras strategically positioned offer full coverage of the subject’s movements.

Adding to the sense of a real life environment, two ceiling-mounted Samsung backlit LED screens provide digital signage within the space. An eye-tracker system, which monitors

and records the respondents’ exact eye movements via spectacles completes the system functionality and all the data is relayed to the viewing area for analysis.

The Virtual Lab was a Reddotsquare solution and has three high definition projectors edge blended to cover a full width curved screen allowing clients to immerse themselves within any given store at any time. The individual images that make up the blend were brought back into the main control room and reassembled to allow monitoring to take place on a single screen alongside the multiple live camera feeds. The images are routed using standard Kramer distribution amplifiers, and inserting them into a TVOne digital DVI image combiner. The combined signal can be distributed throughout the research centre as part of the media management solution.

The viewing area is no less complex.

This required seven individual displays of various sizes, a 65” touch screen monitor, two 46” LED displays and a fourth temporary monitor, which is brought in should the need arise for further coverage. Three bespoke bubble screens relay the four main elements: Earth, Wind, Fire and Water.

All seven displays are designed to be controlled via a combination of two AMX wireless touch panels that independently allow full control of volume, display, source selection and camera control.

The system has built in future proofing to allow an iPad to control the whole system, and to give the user control over the Allen&Heath IDR16 audio mixer, which is based in the AV control room.

The Unilever Singapore project represents a bold and dynamic approach to their workplace environment and the works were completed in Q1 2011.

Hewshott International were appointed as AV and Acoustic consultants and undertook the design and project management of all the technology spaces, working closely with Unilever’s marketing and technical departments to fully understand and appreciate the business’ needs and requirements.

The Campus Bangkok at Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok, a 380-room deluxe business hotel situated in the heart of capital city centre has created an innovative venue within a hotel to serve as the world’s first truly dedicated learning and social centre for the MICE (meeting, incentives, conventions and events) segment of the hospitality industry. As a leading system solutions company based in Bangkok, Vichai Trading (1983) Co., Ltd. was called upon to undertake the project which involved design of the infrastructure, supply, and installation of the audio visual and lighting systems. The Vichai design team approached the project by initially understanding the different AV and networking requirements the client needed for the multiple meeting and recreational rooms for the project.

The North Gate

On arrival at The Campus, guests enter at the North Gate, a place for prefunction congregation, orientation, registration and networking. For the audio framework here, Vichai decided to go with Tannoy iw4 DC speakers and Tannoy CMS801Pi (8-inch) subwoofers which are flushed in the wall and ceiling in order to give a “clean” look to the area.

Audio processing is via Biamp Nexia SP DSP units and the speakers are powered

by Biamp MCA 8150 (8-channel/150W) amplifiers. A Biamp Volume/Select 8 panel on the wall allows for easy control over the audio source and volume levels.

Recognising the importance of having digital signage in meeting venues is evident with the twelve units of Sharp Aquos and Samsung LCD displays installed in the North Gate. These screens with sizes ranging from 19-inch to 52inch are more than capable to showcase the meetings and events schedules that is going on at The Campus. To allow turnkey intercom functionality throughout the venue, Vichai opted to install an AMX NXD-1000Vi Modero (10-inch) touch panel which incorporates VoIP technology. Other AV products in the system include Extron MTP T 15HD A transmitters, Extron MTP RL

15HD receivers, Extron MTP DA8 distribution amplifiers, Extron IN1502 video scalers, and Extron AVT 100P CCTV tuners.

The Halls & Class Rooms

The Lecture Hall is the main and largest meeting room and designed to resemble a college amphitheatre. In specifying the audio system for the Lecture Hall, Vichai chose the Tannoy Arena HighLine 500c loudspeakers which are installed around the main video screen, Tannoy iw4 DC in-wall speakers and CMS801Pi in-ceiling subwoofers. Power and processing comes from QSC’s RMX850 and CX302 power amplifiers, Nexia CS DSPs, MCA 8150 amplifiers, a Biamp autoTWO rack mixer, and a Volume/ Select 8 control panel on the wall. The Hall features the largest screen in the complex, a high-definition 140” screen

which allows for live video streaming and also a number of Sharp Aquos 19inch LCD TV displays. Other devices in the video chain include MTP transmitters and Extender D VGA line drivers. The heart of the Control System follows the AMX platform combining a NI-3100CS NetLinx integrated controller and a MVP-7500 Modero ViewPoint (7½inch) touch panel. An adjacent IT room provides technical support and the Hall’s lighting system is linked to an automatic door opening system to create a dramatic, theatrical entrance for guests.

At the other end of the complex is the second largest meeting room, the Union Hall. The audio system installed for this room comprises Tannoy Di5 DC and iw4 DC speakers and CMS801Pi subwoofers. Audio processing is via a Nexia SP DSP unit and the speakers are driven by a MCA 8150 amplifier with a Volume/Select 8 control panel mounted on the wall. The room is equipped with a Samsung 700DXN 70-inch LCD display together with an M-11WS Electronic Whiteboard. Additional video support comes from one AMX AVSSL-0601-848 video switcher and MTP transmitters and receivers. The Control System for the Union Hall uses a NI700 NetLinx integrated controller, an AXB-REL8 8-channel relay controller, and a Modero NXD-CV5 (5-inch) wall mounted touch panel with programmed presets to facilitate easy control of each room configuration by Campus staff.

Between the two main halls are three Class Rooms which are designed to provide smaller meeting spaces for breakout sessions or private events. The audio-visual systems installed in these three rooms are similar to one another with each room having Di5 DC and iw4 DC speakers, a CMS801Pi subwoofer, a Nexia SP processor, a MCA 8150

amplifier, a Biamp 601 mixer, and a Biamp Volume/Select 8 control panel on the wall. Each Class Room is equipped with a 700DXN 70-inch LCD display together with an M-11WS Electronic Whiteboard. Additional AV hardware is the AMX AVS-SL-0601-848 video switcher and MTP transmitters and receivers. All three Class Rooms are installed with an easy-access Control System using the Modero NXD-CV5 touch panel connected with the NI-700 NetLinx and AXB-REL8 controllers.

The Reading Room & Library

The Reading Room and Library are book-lined getaways with boardroomstyle and video conferencing capabilities and can be opened up as an adjacent extension to Union Hall. As the audio requirements in the Reading Room is more subdued, only a pair of Di5 DC speakers is installed driven by a single RMX850 power amplifier. Audio processing comes from a Biamp 601 audio mixer, a Nexia SP processor, and a Biamp Volume/Select 8 control panel. Both rooms can double up as meeting rooms and are equipped with a 70-inch LCD display together with an M-11WS Electronic Whiteboard. Other products in the AV chain are AMX AVS-SL-0601-848 video switchers and MTP transmitter and receiver units. The Control System is the same as in the Class Rooms. The AV system installed in the Library is the same with the Class Room systems except that a second CMS801Pi sub was installed in the Library.

Vichai also supplied all the microphones for the project. Totalling 44 units, they are mostly partial to the Audio-Technica brand, and especially from the wireless

ATW series, together with a lesser number of Pro-61 handheld and ES947 podium microphones.

The intelligent lighting control system used in The Campus is designed by Vichai using the Grafik Eye 4000 and Grafik 6000 dimming systems from LUTRON. Other LUTRON products in the project include, dimming panels, switchers, DMX512 splitters and interface devices. The lighting system has been programmed with presets to control the different lighting moods required for the various rooms and spaces within the complex.

A modern meeting venue is virtually dependent on having a strong wireless connection throughout the venue and Vichai’s decision to install 3Com’s Switch Hub and Wireless Access Points provides 802.11g wireless support but

The success of The Campus has started a rush with major hotels in Bangkok looking to follow up in introducing themed concepts into their meeting facilities. Bosch Vari-directional Array System installed in Malaysia’s National Mosque

National Mosque of Malaysia

Bosch solutions manage to provide clarity despite structural and architectural challenges The Masjid Negara is the National Mosque of Malaysia. Situated in Kuala Lumpur, it was built in 1965 and is the symbol of supremacy of Islam as the official religion in Malaysia. The mosque has been gazetted as a national heritage building and measures 13 acres with the main building covering an area of approximately 3 acres and is seen as one of the most modern mosques in Southeast Asia.

One of the most important features of a mosque is to provide a high quality sound system so that worshippers can listen to sermons, courses, seminars and other activities clearly without interruption.

In order to fulfil this important function, the Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia and Public Works Department (Acoustic Division) decided that it was time to replace the ageing Public Address system and invited Bosch to specially design a high performance PA solution to cover the entire area with an even sound transmission level during broadcast to its 15,000 worshippers at the peak session.

“This was a challenging project and the customer expected a better performance system even though there were no specific issues with their current system,”

said Mr Lee Chi Hou, Senior Sales & Application Engineer at Malaysia BU Communication.

Bosch together with its Malaysian partner MU-Softmedia, recommended replacing the current PA system with the Bosch Praesideo and the Vari-directional Array loudspeakers – a high quality, flexible and reliable Public Address system with important features such as high level of redundancy and interference free audio which are rare in other systems.

In order to encounter the challenges of the building layout, Vari-directional Array loudspeakers are used in the main hall and corridors to give a single source point to cover up to 50 metres in distance and provide a uniform sound level throughout an area of 50 metres (the length of the hall). A problem of a howling-like noise which is caused by the acoustic feedback was easily solved by using a cardioid pattern microphone with the Vari-directional speakers.

However the project challenges that Bosch faced were not to say the least difficult. From the structure and architecture aspect, producing a high quality acoustic voice with great clarity is a challenge for a dome-shaped mosque.

Additionally, a wavy roof with 25 meters height and 60 meters diameter supported by 16 poles of 1 meter diameter added to the acoustical challenge. Not to mention concrete walls completed with Italian marbles and a concrete roof decorated with glass mosaics and white gold; all these factors would influence the clarity of voice such as sound reflection and absorption by surface and building structure.

Closing the mosque for the project, even temporarily, was not allowed as it’s facilities continue to be used on a daily basis by government ministers, tourists, as well as the public; therefore the entire system which included testing and commissioning had to be completed within a six week time frame.

Also no fixed mounting of loudspeakers to the interior walls or pillars of the building was allowed, therefore customised speaker stands to mount the loudspeaker cabinets were required.

Without disturbance to the structure and architectural design, the renovation and wiring works had to be very minimal and this was one of the most important criteria of the installation.

The main Solat (worship) hall consists of an area of 2,304 square meters with

a varied height of between 5-18 meters.

Bosch conducted a demonstration of four different tests to determine the best and most suitable design to install in the hall including the surrounding corridors and concluded that the best system solution was with using the Bosch Praesideo Digital Public Address System comprising 5 amplifiers for all the speakers - 3 amplifiers active and 2 units on standby; 4 sets of Bosch Varidirectional Array speakers installed at the front of hall; 12 sets of Bosch Vari-directional Array speakers installed along the corridor; 16 units of 2-way Bosch Cabinet speakers installed in women’s praying hall at the first floor; 10 units of Bosch Uni-Directional Sound Projector (20W) voice alarm speakers installed at all entrances to the main hall; 1 unit of Electro-Voice Raven microphone for prayers at the main hall; 2 units of Electro-Voice PC Plus Podium microphones; 1 unit of Electro-Voice RE2-Combo wireless microphone at the main hall, and 1 unit of Dynacord CMS1600 mixing system in the Public Address System control room. The system installed for use in the lecture hall consists of 4 units of Electro-Voice ZXA1 powered speakers, an Electro-Voice PL80C microphone, and a Dynacord CMS1000 mixing system.

INSTALLATIONS

“The challenge that we faced is the installation of components at a relatively short duration. With co-operation of involved parties, we managed to complete the Public Address system installation in 6 days inclusive of testing and commissioning. We are also very pleased with the speaker designs at the main hall and the customised stainless steel poles used to match the surrounding area of mosque. Overall, the installation went smoothly and was successfully completed within just one month,” said Mr Lee. The Digital Signal Processing in both the Praesideo and Vari-directional Array systems not only delivers stunning output quality but also enhances the system to suit the acoustic characteristics of the mosque. Masjid Negara now experiences a better sound quality while the Imams are at much ease when conducting prayers.

World’s first ArtScience Museum opens in Singapore at the Marina Bay Sands Art and Science experienced through innovative AV solutions

What defines the Asian city of the future? For that answer, you have to look at the sculptured skyline of Singapore’s waterfront and see the heart of a new Asian renaissance.

Taking its place in the city’s financial district sits the world’s first ArtScience Museum which boasts an iconic design worthy of its cultural landmark status. The ArtScience Museum @ Marina Bay was officially unveiled in February 2011 by Mr Sheldon G. Adelson, Chairman and CEO of Las Vegas Sands Corp. together with Mr Moshe Safdie, the Museum’s design architect who is the brainchild of the lotus-inspired 50,000 squarefoot edifice with its ten “fingers” symbolising the “Welcoming Hand of Singapore.” The Museum galleries will house travelling exhibitions on the lower three levels, with the fourth level solely reserved to a permanent exhibition aptly titled “ArtScience: A Journey Through Creativity”.

The three galleries at level four – Curiosity, Inspiration, and Expression – elucidate about art and science and the symbiotic relationship between them, but the exhibit is also a remarkable exercise in Audio-visual technology and system solutions. A picture on the gallery wall will tell a thousand words, but that overlooked monitor, projector, and loudspeaker is the AV consultant’s testimony of

the multitude of challenges he had to overcome to have it there. When the main exhibition contractor, Kingsmen Exhibits Pte Ltd, and the design consultant, Mark Hayward from Idea Monkey, Inc. which is an expression design studio based in Los Angeles needed an AV solution, they decided to consult with MediaTechnic Solutions Pte Ltd.

MediaTechnic Solutions is a multi disciplined Audio Visual design and installation company specialising in theme park attraction, museum, galleries and exhibition, with offices in Singapore and Malaysia, and much of the company’s R&D work consists of providing technical and creative AV and control solution to meet the expectations of clients and creative directors. Having been awarded the contract to design, supply and install Audio, Video, and Show Control systems (hardware and software) for the three galleries. Mr Bala Krishnan, managing director of MediaTechnic emphasises how their role is not simply supplying just the hardware: “They wanted interactivity so we looked into it, at how these interactive things will work, and we had to work very closely with the people who developed the interactivity content.” MediaTechnic as the AV solutions consultant, sat down with the design team to see how their ideas can be taken to the next level and achieve conceptualization.

The uniqueness was the building itself.

Each gallery had high complex curve walls which render them acoustically difficult in keeping the sound focused without much reverberation and echoes.

“Just look at these curve and sloping walls. Geometrically its very difficult to do the projections, so we had to go back to the drawing board and do the calculations, detailing all the possible

solutions to conceptualise the idea into practical reality” comments Kumar, project director of MediaTechnic in reference to the unique interior of the building’s “Fingers.”

Curiosity Gallery

Visitors begin their experience at the Curiosity gallery with exhibits that encourage visitors to ponder the very nature of how we define art and science.

The role of the AV system in this gallery is tasked to three Panasonic DLP Projectors for projection coverage of the stairs and walls. MediaTechnic also had to install a series of visitor feedback stands which are fitted with LG 19” touch screen monitors connected to Dell PCs and linked to the Museum’s Central Server Network.

Inspiration Gallery

space available. Together with the touch screens at the wall, the gallery has four interactive stations each installed with a Samsung 23” touch screen display working in tandem with a Panasonic DLP projector.

All the touch screens are run on a network from a central server in the AV Control Room which controls the entire operations of the fourth level. From here, the Museum technicians can upload or change program content remotely for all three galleries via the central server. Using the Samsung displays with integrated PCs also meant that there was no need for additional space or equipment room to house separate CPUs.

Inspiration is an interactive gallery that celebrates the flashpoint of ingenuity powering the worlds of both art and science, and the objects you see here are a lot more expressive than the ones you’re used to in a conventional museum. Here, visitors can create their own unique design projects on interactive touch screen displays which are located in kiosks and a back wall and share them with friends and family over the internet.

When the designers decided on using touch screen displays on the wall (between a partitioned wall), there was no space available to install 40-inch touchscreen monitors with a PC for each of them. MediaTechnic opted to use Samsung 40” touch screen LCD displays which comes embedded with a PC. The displays proved ideal and were compact enough to fit in the narrow

as possible, and the ceiling area clear of unsightly distractions. “It is always the case when the AV is the main component but it has to be unseen,” says Bala. The entire place was white and had a very clean look and whatever equipment was chosen had to fit into this theme. “Here it had to blend in with the architecture, the interior works, etc. We had to take a lot of consideration due to the architectural restrictions,” he adds.

Expression Gallery

Expression is a dynamic multi media gallery providing an emotional demonstration of the power of human beings to harness inspiration to make the world a better place.

Here visitors are immersed in an animation invasion in which layers of kinetic images seamlessly travel across a giant canvas storyboard encompassing video screens, static exhibits, and moving light effects which sweep up the gallery wall rising 60 meters above ground. Because the show content designer wanted the images to move seamlessly from one screen over to another and even the back wall, MediaTechnic had to calculate the exact distance and aspect ratio for the transition of the

images between the screens and projected images from the moving light fixtures. Because the media content was done in the US and sent here they did not have room for errors to make adjustments onsite.

The moving lights are fitted with customised dichroic gobos and their movements programmed to synchronise with the show content to create a surreal seamless choreography of the story. “We had to work closely with the lighting designer, but we control the lighting scenes into the show time-code.

We also had to sit down with the video and audio designers and the audio sound mix for the Expression soundtrack was done on-site by David Kneupper,” says Bala.

The video solution uses Panasonic DLP projectors, a 12K lumens projector for the main Stewart screen, while the other three smaller screens are for the 6K lumens projectors for the smaller Litho screens from LAV. A proprietary Show Control software program synchronizes the video, audio (not in 5:1 because of the gallery’s acoustics) and lighting.

Given the design nature of the Expression Gallery, MediaTechnic was faced with a unique parabolic acoustical problem. During the initial acoustic measurement test, they found that even a very low level sound source at one end of the gallery is acoustically amplified and could be heard clearly at the other end.

Adding to that, the sound reflection of the high walls caused a sound lobe in the middle of the gallery, creating another problem that they needed to

deal with. Given the strict requirement of high fidelity audio and uniformity across the gallery, they narrowed the speaker solution towards an array column speaker system. The key goals were to achieve the uniformity across the gallery, control the vertical dispersion coverage and minimize the sound reflection of the walls to ensure intelligibility of the audio source. Using EASE program to model the gallery, Kumar was able to compute acoustic and listening parameters, and with the type of speaker selected he managed the sound mapping to confirm the uniformity of the coverage area.

MediaTechnic found that the JBL CBT Series line array column speaker (which was ordered in White finish to blend in with the surrounding) met all the requirements especially on the vertical coverage and SPL control. Given the difficulty they faced on mounting surface that allowed only a one-try mounting installation, the JBL CBT calculator was used to help calculate the mounting location and angle of the speaker. The end result is ±2dB from front to end of the gallery (measured at 26 points in the gallery). Understandably everyone, and especially Mr Martin Coster (Technical Director at MediaTechnic) and Kumar were impressed with the outcome given the acoustical challenge in this gallery.

“When we first walked into the galleries, we were overwhelmed by the acoustical challenge posed by the internal structure.

But we are pleased that we managed to resolve the issues without the need for multi element line-arrays.”

Control Room

South Korea’s Megabox KINTEX Debuts Asia’s First Meyer Sound EXP Cinema System operators points toward more premium screen installations with Meyer Sound EXP systems. “EXP systems have a power and clarity that greatly enhances the audience experience, and that sells tickets,” emphasizes Bae. “In addition, the self-powered EXP loudspeakers have much lower maintenance costs, which is also very appealing to the operators.”

Asia’s first Meyer Sound EXP cinema system is wowing moviegoers at the premium “M” screen at Megabox’s KINTEX near Seoul, South Korea. EXP’s Asian debut is the latest in a recent string of EXP commercial cinema installations in North America and Europe.

by Acheron LF low frequency screen channel loudspeakers. Sub-bass thrusts from six X-800C subwoofers, and immersive sound comes through 18 HMS-10 surround loudspeakers. The entire experience is optimized using a Galileo® loudspeaker management system with one Galileo 616 processor.

The Design Process: Done Once, Done Right

My team shared an interesting statistic recently; we have been increasingly asked to perform ‘Design Reviews’ (as opposed to ‘Designs’). This means that, more and more, we are asked to review and address problems in existing facilities (created by others) as opposed to actually designing ourselves. It is unfortunate that in so many projects, consultation (from Technology Consultants/Experts) is sought at a stage when the space planning, interior designs and other service layouts have been finalized without consideration to acoustics or audio/visual systems. Thus, the clients are faced with the decision of performing additional construction (at increased effort and expense) or compromising the functionality of their facility.

Experts in acoustics and A/V technologies should be active members of the design team from the very start of the project. Creation of technologically-advanced and highly -functional spaces requires significant and ongoing coordination with variety of disciplines. Expertise on board for AV installations should be multi-disciplinary; by including Audio Visual, Acoustics, Lighting & IT services together, a comprehensive design can be delivered that provides great functionality and value to facility owners and operators.

An effective approach begins at the most basic level: a discussion of the program requirements for the facility.

In this stage, the functional needs are

documented, as well as any constraints imposed by the existing space (i.e. structural elements, mechanical equipment, etc.) It is only after this stage is complete that schematic and detailed design elements are formed, all based on agreed-upon program direction. Then, at frequent intervals throughout the design process, the work of each discipline is compared to address conflicts and ensure that both performance and cost expectations remain on-target. A design that is well-coordinated between disciplines and existing conditions will: be more readily implemented as-drawn (without extensive field changes), will save substantial time and effort during the construction phase, and will result in a product that is better thoughtout. Design achieved on paper should transpire in its true sense at site, and this requires not only extensive coordination between various agencies towards ‘Good for Construction’ drawings, but also frequent inspection at project site to ensure details are built correctly, as well as to address any minor field adjustments.

Also during the design process, using objective methods to predict performance of equipment and acoustical treatments eliminates ‘guess-work‘ about the results to be expected. Predictions, calculations and measurements are cost effective ways to objectively consider a number of possible design choices long before any equipment is purchased or work is done on-site. These can be used to achieve tangible performance improvements in a practical way.

The sayings, “Do it once, do it right” and “Measure twice, cut once” are both greatly applicable to the design of sound-critical spaces. A project site done ‘rightly’ in the very first instance helps save time, effort and cost, and helps you avoid the embarrassment.

The best time to design a project is when it is still on paper.

the inability to get the correct resolution out of the computer to display on the screen. In fact most modern Laptop computers will only output the very basic 1024 x 768 resolution to a screen unless EDID is detected. Another encounter is the image being offset to one side, or the bottom part being cut off. The computer will also not automatically output so the display will have to be toggled manually.

Very often equipment gets blamed for these issues, when in fact most of it can be attributed to a lack of EDID communication!

By John Ungerer, Managing Director, Kramer Australia Since I started on this path of “Tips & Tricks” in the last issue, I figure the title was plural, not just a single Tip…. So – best I hang on to this line of “simple” writing for a few more issues, or until the Editorial Director throws it out! “……..I know of many hours & days wasted on sites because of these simple rules being overlooked…….” - This was my last sentence in the previous issue; this does give me a good point to tag on to however, since I ended off in the Analog domain with VGA signals, a bit more along this line then.

Most of us are embracing the wonderful world of Digital AV and yet there is still such a vast amount of Analog systems being specified and installed on a daily basis and why not? In many cases it is more than sufficient and all that is required for a specific job, so it is safe to say that “VGA” is alive and well - for now at least! The thing is, it is not just the new systems being installed that is of concern, but perhaps even more so the vast installed base of Analog…. everything, that needs to be kept up to date and maintained in the fast paced industry of evolving computers and source equipment.

The point I am trying to get to is EDID. Any integrator installing Digital equipment would by now have been faced with this, in one way or another but I seem to find enough people who either do not know about EDID in VGA systems, and not everyone that knows about it knows how to deal with it!

Firstly perhaps a recap (in simple terms) of what is EDID (Extended Display Identification Data), which essentially means the Display (Monitor or Projector) communicating it’s capabilities to a Graphics card, whereby the display “tells” the connected computer or Player what type of signal it is able to accept and then adjust the settings of the source to optimize for the display. In Analog terms this mostly means Resolution and frequency. For this to work there needs to be a dedicated line of communication between these two, which is fine if it simply means connecting a proper VGA cable to a monitor, but then how to deal with this problem when faced with an RGBHV or Twisted Pair installation?

Since both of these methods use only Red, Green, Blue and Sync signals, there is no way for the communication to take place. The most common result of this is

So that being the problem, how do we fix it in real life? There is no real way to actively handle EDID in a matrixed environment because even if you were able to pass the signals through a matrix (15 Pin) it would not make sense due to the same source potentially being sent to multiple displays - meaning communication would clash. Of course the same rule applies to distribution amplifiers where some of them will allow for EDID communication only through output one. The only real way to solve the problem is to “fool” the computer into thinking it is connected directly to the monitor! EDID emulation as we like to call it. Scalers presents a different set of rules again as the installer determines the output resolution manually, perhaps more on this for another time.

This quite simply means that the EDID information of the display is captured and stored in Non Volatile memory in a little device and than placed in line directly between the computer and RGBHV matrix or TP system. Communication is now between the laptop and EDID emulator only. KRAMER now even builds this technology into many of the Twister Pair transmitters, making for easier installation and fewer boxes in the system. Of course nothing in our industry is ever clear-cut as we know, so care still has to be taken with mixing monitors of various specifications into one system. You could end up routing a signal to a display that it really cannot handle! Now being able to effectively manage this problem in existing and new analog systems is making for less panic phone calls from integrators who have caught on to the idea.

For those of you who need, or want to know - on the “New” VGA standard, the communication for EDID is handled on the DDC channel on pins 12 and 15 on a standard 15 pin VGA connector. So what is this DDC then? (All these acronyms!)

Think of DDC as the track and EDID being the train!

Peter Maag on Haivision’s acquisition of CoolSign Late in 2010, Haivision acquired the assets of CS Software Holdings, including the CoolSign product technology.
