What’s Behind The InfoComm Organisation’s Name Change?
EDITOR, INDIA AND ME Ram Bhavanashi ram@spinworkz.com
On 13 September, InfoComm revealed to the global industry their new name – Audio Visual and Integrated Experience Association – AVIXA. It was quite interesting for the journalists invited to cover the announcement (including yours truly), to see the physical change happening over at the InfoComm offices where the Association’s name was being changed over.
ADMIN & CIRCULATION Julie Tan admin@spinworkz.com
From the branding perspective, Dan Goldstein, who is the Senior VP of marketing, highlighted to us about the flexibility that the new logo provides to target specific messages. And for those who are sharp-eyed you would notice that the logo is actually an A and V combined.
DESIGN AND PRODUCTION WRITER Jimmy Chin Natalie Chew jimmy@spinworkz.com natalie@spinworkz.com
However this is not just a cosmetic name change. David Labuskes, the Executive Director and CEO of AVIXA highlights that this was a long thought out process where there was intense engagement with key stakeholders and outsourced consultants to ensure the direction was right. By why change the name? The Association felt that as an Association they have grown far beyond what infoComm International could do to promote AV around the world. As Mr Labuskes states, “AV experiences have become so ubiquitous, and they’ve come to include so many more technologies, and touch so many more personal and professional lives, that we felt compelled to embrace a new identity that more accurately reflects this industry’s excitement and welcomes a far more diverse community of professionals.”
MEDIA REP IN NORTH AMERICA Broadcast Media International Michael Mitchell Tel: +1 631 673 0072 mjmitchell@broadcast-media.tv
According to AVIXA, membership has grown to include experiential designers, content creators, IT companies, and users of AV solutions across a growing cross section of markets. AVIXA’s 2017 InfoComm show in Orlando last June attracted a greater share of AV customers than in any other year. Experience or rather Exceptional Experience is what the Association has been evangelising about for the past two years and thus the inclusion of the wordings Integrated Experience is a logical move.

There is however a deeper reason for the name change. AV is part of a bigger picture but in my humble opinion I think one of the key takeaways is that AV has wrestled back the AV aspect as an important ingredient in any installation’s end-user experience. Most solutions now work on an IT infrastructure background but the AV expertise is what helps the experience be better. So embrace the change, know that you and your work is what creates that experience and take pride in getting it right. Best of all with the association encompassing different expertise who may traditionally not be considered part of AV, we will bring in a more diverse knowledge base to our industry. Screen Goo High Contrast At The Hainan Sanya Buddhist Cultural Theme Park CHINA: The Hainan Sanya Buddhist Cultural Theme Park is located in Hainan Island, a popular tropical island in the South China Sea. The park is huge and it features a 108 meter tall Guanyin Buddha statue - fourth tallest statue in the world amongst beautiful scenery and luscious gardens. Sinad Display Technologies, (Beijing) Co. Ltd., a long and very active Screen Goo distributor and contractor recently installed a 600 square meter (6.458 square feet) curved surround (circular) screen powered by 9 Barco 20,000 lumen soft edgeblending projectors. This was a renovation project in a very challenging tropical (humid) environment. The previous screen installed about 4 years ago had started to crack and peel off the surface only two weeks after being installed. The Sinad experienced crew did lots of crack mending and finally sealed the wall off with a locally sourced suitable primer. Then it was 2 coats of Screen Goo High Contrast Reflective coats followed by 2 coats of Screen Goo High Contrast Finish coats.
The end result? According to the venue owners, "much better pictures and overall quality". www.goosystemsglobal.com

Church Golden Jubilee Celebrations Fly With Nexo Hotel Ballroom in Semarang. Expectations were high, despite a seriously tight installation schedule at the venue. Andy Mulya Sutikno, taking charge as System Engineer and FOH engineer as well as supplier, chose a NEXO GEO S12 line array as his main system. The left and right hangs were placed far apart on the 24 metre wide stage, each using 6x S1210 cabinets flown beneath 2x LS18 subs. Additional RS18 Raysubs were used on the floor, running in cardioid mode, to extend the very rich subbass without interfering with the large number of vocal and instrument microphones on stage, 92 channels in all. Additional GEO S1230 modules were also used as frontfills to cover the VIP Platinum seats at the front of the ballroom. PS Series cabinets were used for monitoring. INDONESIA: NEXO’s GEO S12 line arrays were teamed with RS18 and LS18 subbass cabinets to create a powerful system for orchestra, reproducing the acoustic instruments with high fidelity and naturalism. It was a very significant event in Central Java, as the Catholic community in this region of Indonesia came together for a 50-year anniversary, marked with a special Golden Jubilee orchestral concert, with solos from celebrated young Indonesian vocalists. Sound rental company ASIIS Indonesia, also the distributor of NEXO products in the country, was asked to supply a highquality sound reinforcement system to the venue, the Crowne
A large number of performers appeared at the event: the players of the Paulus Surya Orchestra, with guest vocalists Delon Thamrin, Putri Ayu, Angela July, Cicho Jericho, and Surya Vokalia. From behind his Yamaha CL Series console, Andy Sutikno reported that, “thanks to the cardioid subs, and the dispersion of the GEO S line array, we had very even coverage throughout this venue. Shure And Milestone Host Solutions Day At Shure Experience Center
Milestone’s Joseph Mak demonstrating the Vaddio RoboTRAK presenter tracking and HD PTZ camera solutions with audio capture from the Shure MXA910 Ceiling Array Microphone
HONG KONG: Shure, a leading manufacturer of premium audio solutions for AV conferencing, successfully cohosted a Solutions Day with industry partner Milestone AV Technologies, premier manufacturer of Vaddio audio visual solutions, to demonstrate their effort and promise to bring superior conferencing solutions to the market. Supported by local distributor EduServe, the event was held at the Shure Experience Center in Hong Kong and welcomed over 30 local and regional integrators who could observe live demonstrations of a series of integration solutions for various room sizes and applications commonly required in today’s corporate environments. “With our Experience Center, we are able to offer our clients an ideal platform to get a true experience of our audio solutions in a real-life workspace,” said Andy Wan, Director, Integrated Systems & Enterprise Sales at Shure in Asia. “We do understand that our products are one part of a complete AV conferencing system, so we are excited to organize this Solutions Day with Milestone, who complements our offering by providing innovative HD PTZ camera and UCC solutions with its Vaddio brand.” To address the AV conferencing needs in today’s business communications, Shure and Milestone demonstrated a series of solutions with their diversified products.
Huddle Room
Huddle Rooms are a fast growing trend in modern business environments and designed to cater for small group discussions with 4 to 6 participations. Typically relying on BYOD, conference calls are often enabled via the users’ own devices. For such small workspaces with limited AV budget, an easy-to-use solution was designed to provide greater flexibility and enhance soft codec conferencing applications with high quality audio and video. The 4-seat Huddle Room at the Shure Experience Center was set up to demonstrate the Vaddio Conference SHOT AV Conferencing System, equipped with a HD PTZ Camera with 10X optical zoom and 74° wide horizontal field of view supporting up to 1080p/60 resolution as well as integrated, powered speaker (20W), to provide premium visual quality and sound reproduction during a meeting. Paired with the Shure MXA310 Table Array Microphone, users can ensure precise voice capture and clear audio of all meeting participants, while the ANIUSB-MATRIX Audio Network Interface easily connects the microphone and routes audio via USB to a laptop running a software-based conferencing application.
Medium-Size Meeting Room
The Boardroom at Shure’s new demonstration facility provided another perfect example to showcase common AV conferencing needs in mid-size meeting rooms. Addressing

aesthetic concerns and need for simplicity, a flush-mounted Shure MXA910 Ceiling Array Microphone provides virtually invisible audio capture from above. Steerable Coverage technology delivers clearest sound from any location in the meeting room and ensures effective collaboration with remote meeting attendees. The new Shure IntelliMix P300 Audio Conferencing Processor provides advanced DSP algorithms designed for AV conferencing applications, and simultaneously links up participants via multiple platforms, including hard codec VC, soft codec programs, as well as mobile devices. Completing the AV setup, a Vaddio RoboShot 12 HDMI HD PTZ Camera with 12x optical zoom and 73° wide horizontal field of view was installed and connected to a VC codec to provide a high quality visual and full width view of the Boardroom.
Large Venue
All attending integrators at the Shure x Vaddio Solutions Day also experienced a live demonstration of a complete audio/video solution for large multi-purpose rooms and also educational facilities, which comprised the Shure MXA910 Ceiling Arrays as well as ULX-D Digital Wireless Systems paired with Vaddio’s RoboTRAK Presenter Tracking System, RoboSHOT 20 UHD 4K Camera and PCC Premier Multiple Cameras Controller.
In many conference venues or lecture halls which utilize wireless microphone systems, solid signal stability over long distances is critical. In sizeable events where many microphone channels are needed, spectrum efficiency is another important factor, which makes the ULX-D system an ideal audio solution, not to mention confidential discussions which require secure transmission via AES-256 encryption. In terms of camera, the Vaddio’s RoboSHOT 20 UHD was installed with RoboTrak to offer automatic presenter tracking solution which is essential for large meetings or stages where speakers move around. The camera in such a large venue along with cameras in other rooms can be controlled easily and remotely via the PCC Premier. “Efficient meetings, regardless of their size, require a complete AV solution which can deliver premium audio and visual quality with ease of control and monitoring,” said Joseph Mak, Asia Pacific Sales Manager of Milestone AV Technologies. “Both Milestone and Shure are key players in the AV conferencing ecosystems, and we are delighted to see how Vaddio camera solutions are well-integrated with Shure’s advanced audio systems to bring exceptional conferencing experience to the customers.” www.shure.com/asia www.milestone.com

Church Of Our Saviour Chooses High End Systems SolaSpot Pro 1500
SINGAPORE: Church of Our Saviour is a parish within the Anglican Diocese of Singapore that started as a mission in the 1950s and has since grown to a congregation of about 4500. The Church currently has its services at a renovated ex-cinema in Queenstown. The Church recently decided to replace its 15 year old Tungsten based moving head spot lighting fixtures as they were becoming difficult to keep in operating condition. The Church decided to replace the lighting fixtures with LED based light source as they are energy efficient and reduce maintenance drastically with no lamp replacement required. The Church also required that the replacement lighting fixtures offer warm white light capabilities as the replacement fixtures were meant to primarily be used to light up faces and key light positions. Jon Hemsley, senior technical executive at the Church contacted their long term lighting supplier Total Solution Marketing Pte Ltd and laid out their requirements. “Taking into consideration the Church’s needs, we recommended the SolaSpot Pro 1500 fixtures from High End, as other than the warm white light, it also has framing shutters that allows shaping of the face light coverage areas while masking curtain spill,” said Kartik Keyan, Sales Executive at Total Solution Marketing Pte Ltd (TSM). A demo was conducted and after careful evaluation of the various proposals from different suppliers and manufacturers,
Jon decided to order a total of eight High End System Solaspot Pro 1500 spot fixtures for the Church. “The fixture is extremely bright with an output of 20,000 lumens using just a 400w LED engine. They come with framing shutters, two gobo wheels, linear CTO, CMY colour mixing, a prism, an iris, frost, animation effects and an 8 to 45 degree zoom range. Key features include the lens defog system which is essential in LED fixtures as well as thermal protection to ensure that the fixture always operates at its optimum,” added Jon. Jon continues, “The new fixtures are performing well with pleasing results both to the naked eye and on camera. The colour saturation is also fantastic. But the biggest impact is behind the scenes. Our Tungsten fixtures required regular lamp replacement. This operating cost has been greatly reduced and we now only need to operate the flybar when lighting design requires re-rigging! Additionally, we were previously running quite close to the available capacity of our electrical supply. This upgrade allowed us to free up a lot of power supply circuits for special event lighting. Of course I must add that we were impressed by how professional and efficient Kartik and the guys from TSM were! They also provided the necessary training to help us get the best out of the Solaspot.” www.tsm-int.com

ClearOne VIEW AV Streaming System Powers AV System At New Unilever Singapore Training Facility SINGAPORE: When Unilever, the world’s largest consumer goods company, built its new training facility in Singapore, perhaps the most crucial component was a robust audio/ video system that would be easy to use, had no audio lag and could deliver multiple sources to a total of 49 endpoints including digital signage displays. Working with Principle One, a leading technology integration firm with offices in Hong Kong, Singapore, Shanghai and Tokyo, the company turned to ClearOne, and the ClearOne VIEW network streaming system based on Streamnet patented technology TCP/IP solution to provide the 24-zone, four-source system that makes the training centre more efficient and enjoyable for both employees and trainees. According to ClearOne Senior Sales Director for Asia Pacific and the Middle East David Wang, this project highlights the unique attributes pioneered by ClearOne that provide unrivaled simplicity and functionality for the world-renowned manufacturer’s training program for the Asia Pacific region. “With a training facility of this size and complexity, it was an absolute necessity to implement a simple, consistently superior audio/video solution,” Wang said. “Using our VIEW products, Principle One was able to provide Unilever with a robust audio and video streaming and distribution system, and ensure there would be no sync issues or audio delay from room to room. This is a major concern with other TCP/IP audio distribution systems, as any delay between endpoints can distract listeners, cause confusion and reduce the system’s overall effectiveness.” One of the breakthroughs of the Streamnet technology based TCP/IP solution is its ability to reduce audio delay between speakers and endpoints to below 1 millisecond, which is indiscernible by listeners. In a location with 24 separate AV zones that can play any of four sources, this attention to detail makes all the difference. The 24 dedicated zones blanket the entire training center with top-quality audio, connecting the training halls, syndicate
rooms, amphitheater, gymnasium, dining facilities, leisure center and meeting rooms for senior staff. The system is a breeze to use, too, thanks to the iPad control interface. Several digital signage displays located throughout the premises receive feeds from the VIEW system and enable centralized control. Ten rooms also include ClearOne wall-mount keypads, allowing room operators to choose sources and set the volume for content. According to Norman Law of Principle One, this support was a major part of their decision to specify and install ClearOne AV solutions. “What we value most about dealing with ClearOne is their support throughout the project process. There is always a knowledgeable person at the end of the phone who is not only able to answer any questions we might have, but is aware of our specific project, and that is invaluable to us when we are dealing with clients of this nature and size.” The VIEW system at Unilever’s training facility is comprised of 26 ClearOne MLAV9500 IP-Based Digital Video Encoders, 24 ClearOne VL9300 IP-Based Digital Video Decoders, 25 ClearOne SL251 IP-Based Controller/Amplifiers, a ClearOne ANTHOLOGY Audio Media Server, 4 ClearOne 48-Port Gigabit Switches and 10 ClearOne KL201 Wall-Mount Keypads. “We stand behind our solutions and provide on-demand help during the installation and design process as well as on any occasions where troubleshooting is required,” Wang added. “We want every installation to go smoothly and result in happy end-users, and we do everything we can to help integrators make that happen on every job. Superior service and innovative technologies are what keeps integrators coming back and sharing our products with their clients both large and small.” www.principleone.com www.clearone.com

DPA Microphones Bring Exceptional Audio Quality To Yoido Full Gospel Church SOUTH KOREA: Yoido Full Gospel Church, a Pentecostal church in Seoul, South Korea, has turned to DPA microphones to ensure that its record breaking congregation can clearly hear the pastors’ sermons, as well as the choir and musicians that regularly accompany it services. “The biggest reason for choosing DPA was the solid yet clean tone its microphones deliver,” says Jung Kim, Sound Director for the Church. “Other brands also have various adaptors and options, but for us DPA microphones were the best.” Founded by David Yonggi Cho in 1958 and presently led by Young Hoon Lee, the Yoido Full Gospel Church is located on Yoi, an island in the middle of the Han River. The church’s main building was inaugurated in 1973 and it now has nearly 500,000 members making it the largest Pentecostal Christian congregation in South Korea. In total, the Yoido Full Gospel Church has invested in eight d:vote 4099 Instrument Microphones, one d:fine 4088 Cardioid Headset Microphone, four d:dicate 4011 Cardioid Recording Microphones and two d:facto Vocal Microphones. Jung Kim says: “I have previously used DPA for live events and in other churches, so I was aware of the quality of the brand. When the time came to upgrade our microphones, I chose DPA because they deliver great results and offer the reliability we need in terms of installation, microphone characteristics and minimal interference between microphones that are being used near to each other.” For the main part of the church where most services take place, Yoido has chosen the DPA 4011F d:dicate gooseneck microphone solution, which features the versatile MMC4011 cardioid capsule. The 4011F Podium Microphone solution has been installed via a DPA TSM4001 table shock mount. This configuration is ideal for pastors because the 4011F Podium Microphone solution offers exceptional speech intelligibility via its linear on-and off-axis response. Pastors and visiting lecturers also have the option of using the d:fine Headset Microphone, which gives them complete
freedom of movement. Yoido’s selection of d:vote Instrument Microphones are used by the orchestra to amplify piano, string and brass instruments, while the church’s choir is amplified with d:dicate 4011A Cardioid Microphones. “We also use our d:vote Instrument Microphones for bands and for other purposes, depending on the occasion,” Jung Kim adds. “We are now looking to replace the microphones we use for satellite broadcasting and radio production and once again DPA will be our first choice.” www.dpamicrophones.com

“Retail Evolution” Workshops Inspire Retailers With Innovative Technologies
Johnny illustrated how retail technology evolved
Edward analyzed the trend of innovative retail technology
HONG KONG: The success of Retail Asia Expo 2017 in June gave Mindstec Asia more confidence in further penetrating its business into the Hong Kong and other Asian markets. Dozens of enquiries about Mindstec’s solutions were received from the Expo, that instigated Mindstec to further organize a series of “Retail Evolution” Workshops over four consecutive Fridays starting from 21 July to 11 August. A wide spectrum of renowned retailers visited the workshops and got inspired by the sharing from Mindstec and guest speaker, Edward Lam from 3Ds Hong Kong, and by the advanced retail technologies Mindstec demonstrated. The workshops were concluded with great success and positive feedback. Two topics were covered in the sharing section hosted by Johnny Wong, Mindstec’s Regional General Manager (North
East Asia) and the guest speaker, Edward Lam, Co-founder of 3Ds Hong Kong. Technology plays an important role in modern retail environment and promotion strategies. Johnny and Edward shared their thoughts and experience of how technology could help boost sales and drive customer engagement, and how to utilize technology to facilitate brand building in a cost-effective and dynamic way. “From handdrawn or printed posters in the 70s, neon signs since the 80s, roll-up banners and advertising light boxes since the 90s, to more dynamic displays nowadays like LED signage, interactive displays or even 3D holographic displays, promotion tools have been evolving with more and more technologies deployed. We shall not miss the golden opportunity to stand ourselves out from the keen competition by using technology to attract customers,” said Johnny.

New technologies help improve customers’ experience and stimulate buying impulse. If you don’t want to lag behind other competitors, taking the advantages of using innovative technologies should be the prime consideration of all retailers,” said Edward, the specialist in 3D projection and animations who was accredited with several industry awards including 12th TBS DigiCon 6: Animation & Movie Awards. Crestron Launches Expansive India HQ; Sets Up Exclusive CEC “We are excited to provide hands-on support to our clients in India,” said Stuart Craig talking to SI Asia on the occasion of the office launch. “India is a very important market for us, and Crestron is committed to providing the best service and solutions here,” he said. “Our customers now stand to benefit from our widely expanded, globally uniform solutions offerings as well as enhanced service support from this exclusive set-up while it helps us to further expand our reach and customer support in India.”
INDIA: Advanced control and automation technology solutions major Crestron launched its newly established India office recently in Bengaluru. Said to be one of the largest office establishments in the world for the automation solutions major, the 31,000-square feet expansive office is characterized by many a feature that are offered to customers as part of the ‘trusted Crestron Experience.’ featuring a distinctly stylized Customer Experience Centre (CEC) – which had been a sort of talk of the industry ranks for a few months now – is apparently part of Crestron’s global initiative to have in place a uniform market approach in terms of products and solutions offerings. Located at RMZ Eco World on the Bengaluru’s famed ‘tech corridor’ along Bellandur, the India HQ forms part of Crestron’s strategic blueprint for business development throughout the Asia Pacific region. Since the company started re-orienting its global structure about little over a year ago, it had set up exclusive offices and CECs in Sydney, Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai, before setting up the India office.
Swanky in ambience, sizable in space, focused in offerings, and methodical in integral parts, the new Crestron office is indeed a refreshing experience for a visitor. Upfront, beside the Reception is the aesthetically designed CEC featuring the entire range of Crestron solutions- meant for different verticals and segments that the company addresses. Notable features of this CEC are new products such as blinds that Crestron is set to launch, and a boardroom setup depicting a model boardroom environment. “This is not a showroom where one can touch and feel the products; one can rather understand the kind of solutions one can get from Crestron," Stuart Craig says." The CEC helps customers not just to choose and pick their products, but also get their desired solutions customised as per their need.” “What is unique with the CEC is every product is designed and engineered to work together from end-to-end,” he explains. “In today’s high-technology world, it is always a big challenge to have different products on a networked platform to work in tandem. With Crestron, we are showcasing how we can provide an ideal platform for a chosen environment.” According to him, the setting up of R&D base, accompanying the CEC is in line with the company’s global outlook as well as focus on Indian market. This R&D centre works in tandem with other R&D centres of Crestron for firmware, software or network components.
The expanded presence and business strategy is like guided and driven by Crestron Asia Pacific CEO Stuart Craig leading the initiative from the company’s APAC Head Office in Sydney. This newly established feature-rich India office is thus unique for: • An exquisitely designed state-of-the-art Customer Experience Centre (CEC) showcasing the entire ranges of Creston solutions addressing the full market spectrum • A large research and development (R&D) centre with over 150 engineering personnel working on Crestron product R&D initiatives • A dedicated training theatre aimed at accommodating professional development coursework

“They play a critical role in meeting the requirement of customers at a regional and global scale. It is essentially to make it clear that the products that a customer sees in the USA, or Europe or elsewhere, same products they can get in India as well,” explains the Crestron AsiaPac chief. “Indian customers do not have to reach out farther places to get their desired solution.” That Crestron has already set up dedicated CECs in major cities of Asia like Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai, besides AP headquarters in Sydney, Stuart reasons in the fast paced growth of the industry and diversity of customer requirement, and Crestron’s focus on staying as nearer to addressing that requirement as possible. Leading from between the Reception and the CEC, one proceeds to the spacious interiors Recreation Space housing the large R&D wing, and a long series of executive chambers that includes the seat of newly appointed Crestron India Executive Director Gagan Verma. Alongside the office chambers is the dedicated Boardroom, while behind the office chambers is the general administration work space. The new office is also characterized by a dedicated recreational area with a tennis table and cafeteria. According to the company spokesperson, the new office provides for an inspiring ambience to stimulate professional expertise and creativity among people even as it meets every requirement of a visiting customer.
“Two essentials,” points out the Crestron AP chief. “One is the interface; if you cannot use it or understand what’s going on the backend that would be a difficult situation for one using technology. The second is the adoption of technology; any modern living or business environment is to adopt technology. In a fast-paced life this would be a determinant of how one communicates with the other.” Position Strengthened: The new office set-up, and the new focus of marketing approach only strengthens the company’s position and reach with the customers, says Gagan Verma, the newly appointed Executive Director of Crestron India.
Gagan Verma, Executive Director, Crestron India
“Post-restructuring, we are much more focused both on our customer-orientation and product offering,” Gagan explains. “Our partner-base in the country – though appears lesser in numbers than what it was earlier – is much more methodical, streamlined and focused on our business vision.” The new office launch saw more than 150 guests that included Crestron dealers, consultants, architects, builders, interior designers, lighting designers and specifiers, electrical contractors, vendor partners and media. Following the launch, guests were taken through guided tours of the new office, CEC, and fully functional training rooms. This also included demonstrations of the latest products and solution Crestron offers that included Education Solutions, Network AV Management, Room Scheduling and Home Automation Solutions. www.crestron.com

Interactive Projectors For The Classrooms Of Tomorrow Teachers today face the challenge of engaging students who are sophisticated digital natives. These students have grown up using touchscreen smart phones, tablets and laptops from childhood, and have experienced a myriad of learning styles than the generations before them.
up to 100 inches, or double the size of an expensive 50inch touchscreen flat panel. Additionally, resolution of the interactive projectors is available up to WUXGA quality, which is beyond Full HD, and project videos and images with vivid clarity.
The classroom of today has evolved as well. It is now a necessity for schools to have modern display technologies that incorporate collaboration and interactive engagement, with a focus on making learning fun. As such, finger touch and pen drawing capabilities of interactive projectors enable teachers to engage students in new and creative ways, and to bring lessons to life.
4 Screen size matters – Although obvious, some do not realise that screen size is of paramount importance, especially in the common large classroom settings, where each student needs to be able to read the content. With the large interactive screen size offered by interactive projectors to the budgetconscious education buyers, delivering interactive content to every student in the classroom is no longer a problem.
Interactive displays for teaching can bring distinct benefits to students, who are reported to experience increased enjoyment and motivation in learning, according to reports by Becta, an advisory body for educational technologies in British schools.
5 Say goodbye to glare – Another consideration to take note is that many flat panel or other displays suffer from glare caused by the reflection from classroom lighting or daylight from the windows. This sort of reflection is not found on projector screens.
Display Size Matters– Interactive projectors are the smart choice
There are currently various forms of interactive displays now available in the market such as the interactive projectors and the interactive flat panel display. Being touch-enabled, these technologies allow users to interact with the display, much like a smartphone screen but on a larger scale. While some may feel that flat panel displays are brighter, interactive projectors can actually provide a larger and more impressive screen for a large student audience. Projectors are also more costeffective for classrooms. Let’s look at some factors that make interactive projectors shine. 1 Cost – The interactive projector’s cost is a fraction that of interactive flat panel.
2 Flexibility and scalability – Interactive projectors project images very well onto just about any solid surface – whether a dry erase board, plain wall or even a tabletop, they can be turned instantly into multi-touch interactive surfaces. In contrast, other interactive displays such as the interactive flat panel will always take up wall space, occupying the space permanently even when it is not in use. 3 Excellent image quality – The interactive projector stands out for its picture quality. The touch-enabled projected images are not restricted to a specific size and can go
Epson’s Interactive Projector for the classroom
The versatility and connectivity of Epson’s interactive projector have helped to broaden the possibilities for a teacher’s classroom methods. It has enabled teachers to utilise a wide variety of content from multiple sources with a touch of a button. It also has the ability to enable annotation directly onto any projected content, including slides, education software, images from document cameras and even pause scenes of videos, making lessons with multimedia contents more interesting.
Using an interactive projector as a display creates an interactive participatory environment and encourages collaboration, where both teacher and students can interact and contribute to the lesson contents, making learning more engaging and productive. The benefit of this revolutionary education approach is that it helps to break down barriers within the classroom, and fosters better rapport and teamwork. When multiple participants, teachers and students alike are given the opportunity to cocreate and interact simultaneously on a large digital learning canvas, the lesson becomes fun, collaborative and stimulating. www.epson.com.sg/displaysizematters

Bosch PROMATRIX 6000 Public Address And Voice Evacuation System Offers Enhanced Functionality
The PROMATRIX 6000 Public Address and Voice Evacuation System from Bosch now offers users new hardware and software features for enhanced functionality and use in larger applications. Using IP technology, PROMATRIX 6000 provides a highly flexible, reliable and secure system solution with superior audio quality and low latency. As installers can use existing networks in the building infrastructure, relying on IP technology also results in faster installations and lower implementation costs. Furthermore, PROMATRIX 6000 can be interconnected with other devices such as PCs or laptops over IP protocol, allowing for efficient remote control, diagnostics and maintenance via the Internet.
The PROMATRIX 6000 Public Address and Voice Evacuation System IP functionality and connectivity is achieved via the newly released Dante network interface module (OM-1). It is now possible to create a 16-channel Dante audio network between the individual controllers. This not only improves the size; the IP networking architecture allows users to create multi-controller network topologies for larger areas via up to four decentralized controllers. This also means less cabling – a big cost-saving factor in some applications. The PROMATRIX 6000 system from Bosch can now address, at maximum configuration level, up to 984 zones with a total of 164,000 watts of amplifying power in one system, making the system suitable for bigger installations in which a large number of zones and loudspeakers are needed. It also caters to existing installations whenever the infrastructure of a building changes and additional rooms have to be addressed. In addition, the network configuration provides redundant channels for safety purposes – in case of an emergency these channels will always work for evacuation signals, even if a controller loses network communication. PROMATRIX 6000 now also includes loudspeaker zone monitoring and 30 minutes of flash memory for recordings of evacuation-related communication. www.boschsecurity.asia

B-Tech’s New BT8312 Pop-out Mount Brings Ultra-Slim Benefits B-Tech AV Mounts have added to their range of pop-out mounting solutions with the introduction of the ultra-slim BT8312. Designed to make video wall installations as quick and simple as possible, B-Tech’s latest mount can be used to create unlimited video wall configurations in both landscape and portrait format. The ultra-slim profile of the BT8312 makes it the ideal choice for mounting into walls with a narrow recess or when space in front of the wall is at a premium. ADA compliance - American legislation relating to the accessibility of electronic and information technology for people with disabilities, states that wall mounted screens in public places must not protrude more than 100mm from the wall. As screens get thinner, with some sub-50mm deep models now available, the BT8312 is ideal for meeting these regulations.
Being part of the B-Tech family of mounting solutions, the BT8312 also works perfectly as a pole mounted solution when used with the System 2 range. Similar to B-Tech’s ever-popular BT8310 mount, the BT8312’s pop-out system allows quick and easy access to the rear of mounted screens for servicing and toolless micro-adjustment enables easy and accurate screen alignment. The BT8312 also features wallplate keyhole fixing, with mounting template spacers available to eliminate time-consuming calculations and on-site measuring. B-Tech’s engineers have developed an integrated locking mechanism that prevents accidental screen pop-out, with interface adaptor arms included for use with VESA 600 x 400 displays. www.btechavmounts.com

Integrate 2017 – Ticked All The Right Boxes by Jason Allen
2017 was a Melbourne year for Integrate, Australia’s integrated systems exhibition that alternates between the southern city and Sydney. It returned mature, bold, and with a greater footprint on both the show floor and in its comprehensive lecture and education programme. It bought attendees from across the institutional and enterprise spectrum, as well as consultants and integrators working in every market. It was a busy show for Australia, and felt more like InfoComm in Las Vegas than the quiet show it began as in 2008.
Virtual Control
TAG’s Ewan McDonald with a Dell server running QSC’s Q-Sys
The big news in technology at the show is the emergence of server-based AV control independent of dedicated, proprietary hardware. While industry stalwarts continued to exhibit their time-honoured solutions, QSC’s Q-SYS was proudly displayed running on an off-the-shelf Dell server. The current business model for QSC is that customers will buy the server directly from Dell with Q-SYS preloaded, with their licensing incorporated into the price. QSC then provides
endpoints like audio I/O and cameras. To prove a point, local distributor TAG had set up Q-SYS running a GUI on touch screens that could order coffee and SMS you when it was ready, a feat well out of the reach of most DSPs.
Barco Overture
Another challenger to hardware control is Barco’s Overture. Developed from Canadian company Medialon’s show control, which Barco purchased in 2016, Overture runs as two virtual servers. Its UX (user experience) server hosts all elements of a system’s configuration and layout, while its Control server handles IP communication between devices. If there are devices in a system with no IP control, Overture can use Global

integrate with Microsoft’s Power BI to enable end-users outside of IT to get data on how their staff are utilising their rooms.” DigitalMedia NVX includes four units which can be set-up to both send and receive. They are available in both box and card format, with audio DSP enabling downmixing as an option in both formats. The series is designed to enable 4K 60 fps 4:4:4 video transmission over a 1 gigabit link, targeted for across large installations like university campuses with multiple switch hops. It’s latency of 21ms is comparable to HDBaseT’s (16ms), and as such not perceptible.
Crestron’s Asia-Pacific CEO Stuart Craig
When asked about the rise of server-based control, Crestron’s Asia-Pacific CEO Stuart Craig responded “Whether its streaming, UC or control product, it’s only part of a solution. Unless you have one platform across the whole project, as Crestron provides, you’re going to struggle. New developments in control? Watch this space,” strongly hinting that we can expect an interesting response from Crestron soon. It may mirror both AMX and Crestron’s response to the iPad eroding market share from their dedicated touch screens – if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.
“Crestron offers an end-to-end platform that can be managed securely, can be measured, and is reportable”, Stuart Craig continued. “That’s our point of difference. We’ve had a huge year in Asia-Pacific; we’ve opened new offices in Singapore, India, and Shanghai and we’re building in Hong Kong. Our new NVX and Mercury products are a huge part of our future. We’re also seeing significant growth in residential, with Amazon’s Alexa and Google Home opening minds as to what’s possible in a smart home.”

Big news on the Crestron stand was the new Mercury tabletop conferencing system and DigitalMedia NVX AV-over-IP range. Mercury is a compact, platform-agnostic wireless BYOD conferencing system designed to be user-centric. “When we create something that allows the user to decide how they want to work, room utilisation goes up and the user has a better experience,” said Crestron’s Ellie Harris. “Mercury allows them to bring their device into the room, and run Zoom, WebX, Skype, or another platform; the user chooses. It also runs its own data analytics including occupancy detection, which connects via Crestron Fusion to print out its reports. It can also
Barco made a notable impression with the Barco ClickShare POD set-up at Integrate’s entrance. Six pop-up meeting rooms equipped with Barco’s wireless ClickShare collaboration system were available for free to any Integrate attendee that needed somewhere to wheel and deal. Over at local Barco distributor AVD’s stand, the latest in the ClickShare hardware range, the CSE-800, was on display. The CSE-800 adds video connectivity with dual 4K ins and outs, up supports to eight images on screens. It adds blackboarding and annotation, and saves pdfs directly to the “My Documents” folder of any PC connected with a ClickShare button. A new ‘Moderation’ control enables anyone using the system to control which team member goes to screen, and it now includes full support for Miracast. Continuing the networked theme was Barco’s cloud-based weConnect collaborative teaching system. Universities have traditionally struggled to put together cost-effective systems for interactive lectures, typically employing massive matrix switchers, and needing to incorporate multiple hardware devices. weConnect is a complete BYOD wireless content

cater to different needs and budgets,” said Michael Bosworth, General Manager, Christie Australia. “Through our extensive showcase at Ingram Micro’s booth, we wish to highlight that besides high-brightness 3DLP solutions, Christie also has a good lineup of mid- to low-brightness projection solutions that deliver excellent visuals and value for various applications.” Ingram Micro’s eye-catching booth showcased a modern office environment featuring the latest technology, as well as integration between Pro AV and unified communications solutions. Solutions on display included Christie Captiva DHD400S and Christie D13HD-HS 1DLP laser phosphor projectors, which are ideal for corporate, hospitality and educational applications. Also on show were the Christie DHD599-GS, DHD700-GS and DHD850-GS 1DLP laser phosphor projectors that offer up to 20,000 hours of low-cost operation.
iMAG’s Gerry Raffaut
With control firmly established as the show’s hot topic, Australian AV-over-IP manufacturer iMAG Systems were trumpeting the ‘Any Control’ update to their Thunder and Lightning video products. “What we’re trying to do is make Thunder and Lightning easier to use,” said iMAG’s Gerry Raffaut. “Any Control allows Lightning to respond to commands from any other manufacturers control products. This means integrators can update a room without updating the control. If they’re using Extron control, for example, they can send the control commands they are familiar with to our products, which they may not be familiar with.” Now with distribution in The Netherlands, China, Thailand and Japan, iMAG Systems is showing the market that a small Australian company can match it with the big boys.
Lin Yu, Vice President, Christie Asia Pacific, commented, “We’re pleased to showcase an extensive lineup of laser phosphor solutions at our distributor Ingram Micro Australia’s booth and demonstrate the competitive advantages that our lampless projection illumination platform provides, particularly those with BoldColor Technology, to customers by creating the colour balance needed to accurately reproduce colourful images, without sacrificing brightness. I’m hopeful that our noteworthy showcase at Integrate 2017 will present us with new opportunities to share ideas, reach out and provide the best possible experience to our users and partners in Australia and New Zealand.”

How To Speak IT When You Live In An AV World
by Martin Bonsoir
O
ne of my defining characteristics is an absolute dearth of interest in car mechanics. I am a rather keen Formula One follower, I like going karting fairly regularly and I thoroughly enjoyed driving an Aston Martin around a track (although I finish almost every corner going backwards).
In the last few years, we’ve seen a distinct shift in who is ultimately responsible for an organisation’s audiovisual solutions. It is increasingly common for these people to work for or come from the IT world. And, if we consider that most professional AV equipment now connects to the network, we have the inevitable conditions for the two worlds colliding.
But any desire to understand how a basic, family car works? Not the slightest hint of curiosity. There’s no more efficient way of putting me to sleep than explaining how hydraulic steering works. Given a choice between chatting about spark plugs or watching a video of drying paint, I will happily choose the second – I would even be amenable to playing it in slow motion, if necessary.
Not only are IT professionals often unfamiliar with the terms we use in the professional AV industry, they may also be uncertain as to what the problem, challenges and pitfalls are to begin with. All they hear is it will cost them time and money – resources IT professionals are often short on. But if AV integrators and installers want to walk away from each meeting with specific goals met, there are a few things we can do to improve the conversation and guarantee a more successful outcome.
You can imagine how I feel each time necessity forces my car into a mechanics’ den (I believe they may be called garages). All I hear is “Sir, your metabulator filter has split and is leaking oil into the front left secondary manifold assembly. It’s going to cost an absolute fortune.” If the first sentence has me nodding off, the second is invariably destined to frustrate me. Because I find DIY mechanics nothing more than an incredibly boring way of gathering dirt under one’s nails. I don’t know if what the mechanic is saying is true or false, dangerous or innocuous, and what the consequences of leaving things as is will be. All I know is that every interaction will provide a consistent level of frustration. And that, my friends, is exactly how many IT managers feel when they are forced to talk to the average AV person.
Perspective and Understanding
As with any meeting, gaining perspective and having empathy for people you’re dealing with is key. The role of an IT person varies greatly and includes responsibility over vitally important issues from keeping the company’s data secure to ensuring all services run smoothly each and every day. Sorting out the AV system is not usually within their top priorities.
Technology is a Big Category
Another detail we must understand about the IT world is that the technologies included are vast and diverse. And as such, a broad knowledge of various topics (a common occurrence in the AV world) isn’t always to be expected or even possible. Instead, the complexity of the various technologies has created an increasingly specialized and, in some ways, a more
TECH TALK Systems IntegraƟon Asia October - November 2017
focused career path. An infrastructure architect possesses massively different skills and responsibilities from a desktop support specialist or a CRM developer. Understanding that each IT person’s role may be highly specialised (and may also vary depending upon company size) and that they may not be knowledgeable as to what other departments within their organisation are doing, could contribute to frustration on both sides. It is dangerous to make assumptions and request favours based on inaccurate expectations. I have witnessed meetings quickly disintegrate when someone from the AV team makes a statement like, “All we need from you are a few IP addresses” or “It’ll be just another device on the network.”
The Bigger Picture
57
And last, but most certainly not least, my humble advice would be to do the opposite of what I’ve done with car mechanics. Rather, do learn about IT and at the very least, have a working knowledge of the basics: the OSI model, IP addressing, subnetting, MAC addressing, broadcast domains and VLANs. This will expand your vocabulary and understanding, and empower you to truly understand the concerns, hurdles and opportunities IT professionals face each day. And, as I have argued in the past, acquiring IT skills is no longer a luxury for AV professionals. It’s a necessity we can no longer avoid. As for me picking up car mechanics 101? Forget it. I would rather take public transport.
Even if we ignore that reserving an IP address on a corporate network costs serious money and thus should not be requested lightly, no competent and sane IT professional will allow “another device” to connect to their network without having detailed information about the devices in question. The upkeep of existing services and the security of the network is a serious undertaking and cannot be compromised by an unknown quantity. Thus, when discussing an installation with an IT manager, it is excellent form to always produce detailed information on all ports and protocols used by all devices in a proposed system, even if by IT standards, most AV devices are rather unsophisticated (with the notable exception of VoIP interfaces). Specifics about encryption of communications and other security measures (like the ability to disable unused ports and services) need to be documented and shared.
Responsibility and Knowledge
Another point to keep in mind is that most IT departments are accustom to managing the application aspect of services under their keep, either through virtualisation or other means. For an IT department, most modern AV devices are network appliances running proprietary embedded operating systems. Whilst not at all unheard of, it can be unusual, and something that will need to be explained and fully understood before moving to the implementation phase.

Five Ways QSC’s Q-SYS Is Ideal For IT AV and IT going hand in hand is more than established now. More and more AV equipment manufacturers and solutions developers are making their systems IT-oriented, while most IT solutions developers are trying to incorporate AV aspect to most of their systems development. With the Convergence happening thicker, wider and faster than expected, practically every stakeholder in the AV domain is keen about every emerging solution. Q-SYS platform from QSC is one such solution, emerging with synergies with IT. Here is how:
A
s the industry evolves, integrators and end users will look more to software-based platforms that are simple, flexible and built on the same techniques, standards and protocols with which IT is familiar. Luckily for enterprises everywhere, the QSC Q-SYS Platform is just what they are looking for– a simple and flexible audio, video and control (AV&C) solution built on IT standards.
the platform is largely attributed to QSC’s decision to base it on standard IT technology. It uniquely leverages the power of Intel processing, the robustness and mission critical reliability of a Linux operating system, and the interoperability of IEEE networking standards, all of which enables development and delivery of new technology, far faster and more efficiently than ordinary, DSP chip-based solutions.
With Q-SYS, IT departments won’t have to manage disparate components from different manufacturers. They can easily take advantage of a single platform that also offers them the flexibility to serve all AV&C requirements for meetings rooms, conference rooms, presentation areas and lobby spaces. As one looks at today’s new IT customer, here’s why and how a software-based platform like Q-SYS fits the bill for a true endto-end AV&C solution. Broadly speaking, there are as many as five factors the Q-SYS solution plays compelling for an IT customer.
Q-SYS utilizes Intel technology as its base hardware platform with all processing happening inside the Intel chipsets. On top of that, QSC uses Linux with some real-time extensions to provide a high-performance, open-standard operating system.
One - Built on IT standards:
The Q-SYS Platform has never been just an audio processor. It was conceived from the beginning as a fully integrated audio, video and control platform. The key to the success of
According to Martin Barbour, Product Manager for Installed Systems at QSC, the company has developed custom network drivers that talk to the network ports on the processors, and has written its own custom drivers to provide real-time performance to get that really high count audio at very low latency to the network ports. With this kind of IT-centric layered approach, the Q-SYS Platform can easily evolve into other Intel platforms as they introduce updated, faster chipsets, and to other off-the-shelf
TECH TALK Systems IntegraƟon Asia October - November 2017
hardware. Additionally, Q-SYS Platform’s usage of IT standard protocols makes it highly extensible for future IT functions and platforms.
Two - Adaptable Design/Flexibility
Q-SYS is a software-based platform and meets the demand for scalable, future-proof solutions. As an operating system, it has the flexibility to easily deliver new features to the platform with a simple software upgrade. A worthy analogy is thinking of Q-SYS like a smartphone, open to an unlimited amount of apps. Anytime a new feature is added to the platform it can be added easily with a simple download. This eliminates the need for purpose-built hardware to deliver the same capabilities to a system. Barbour sites an example when QSC added acoustic echo cancellation (AEC) to the platform, users simply downloaded a firmware update to take advantage. Even legacy Q-SYS Cores processors already deployed in the field were able to easily add the feature.
Three - I/O Agnostic Audio
When examining its audio component, Q-SYS offers an I/O agnostic platform. It has the ability to bring in audio from all the major types that are prevalent in the industry today, whether that be analog inputs and outputs, AES/EBU, networked audio in the form of Q-LAN or AES67, and through specialized input/output cards. It offers integration points for Dante, CobraNet, and AVB and is really the only platform in the industry that offers this level of diverse integration options for audio.
Four - Video — AV-to-USB Bridging
For its first foray into the video market, QSC specifically chose to offer a more flexible solution inside the meeting room to make soft codec integration even easier and more accessible. In the Q-SYS Platform paradigm, AV-to-USB Bridging leverages the strengths of the network. It involves transporting audio and video streams over the network and presents it to any PC via USB for integration with any soft conferencing application on any host operating system. In other words, if a computer has a USB port available, Q-SYS can serve up driverless plugand-play audio and video for software-based conferencing applications. The networked nature of the solution allows users to integrate as many Q-SYS cameras that are need in a room. No more point-to-point limitations of USB cameras. No more expensive and unreliable USB and HDMI extenders. Q-SYS solves the problem of geography by using the network for the long runs
59
and USB for connectivity at the end points (computer). Another problem Q-SYS is solving is now all cameras, control, power and video stream are coming over a single POE cable. In the Q-SYS Platform paradigm, for people who already have a Q-SYS Core processor in their room, it’s as easy as plugging in a camera and adding a bridge onto the network. Now, end users can preview, switch and control Q-SYS PTZ-IP video streams using QSC touch screen controllers, PCs and iOS devices. Better yet, designers create the user control interface using the same simple drag’n’drop software they used to design the system.
Five - Third-Party Integration/Control Q-SYS has the ability to be a complete control system and offers an architecture where integrators can build plug-ins offering easier integration of third-party devices into Q-SYS Designer Software.
Since the control engine runs on the Intel platform, the amount of control processing power available in Q-SYS products far outweighs anything you’ll see in a combination of multiple Crestron processors, which is why more integrators are making the switch from a Crestron or AMX solution. From a control perspective, Q-SYS offers everything from basic binary control and presets. Right through to its robust Lua scripting engine, which allows anybody who understands code to write very advanced scripts to both control internal devices or control external devices. The Attero Tech plug-in is a great example of the platform’s flexibility. The company recently developed its own plug-ins for its Dante and AES67-based solutions, and through Q-SYS, integrators and end users will now have the ability to remotely control and monitor the Attero Tech devices allowing for tight integration with remote source and output devices. Because of Q-SYS’s open architecture and unique ability to accept custom scripting, anything with an IP port or RS-232 port can be controlled using our platform. This growing library of very commonly used third-party devices for the conference room is proof. The company already has control plug-ins and scripts for manufacturers like Logitech, Lutron, Atlona, Alcorn McBride, Attero Tech and Wyrestorm. More, one can’t beat it from a price point perspective! A Core processor is relative to any audio DSP processor; however you’re also getting a full-on control processor as well. The benefits Q-SYS platform offers are unlike anything currently on the market. www.qsc.com

INTERVIEW Systems IntegraƟon Asia October - November 2017
Understanding Corporate AV The Corporate AV market is a significant contributor to the bottom line of the AV industry. It is generally the largest vertical market segment in most countries. Video-conferencing, BYOD meeting spaces, Huddle rooms and training rooms have significantly contributed to the productivity of organisations and this trend will continue to expand, as offices spread across countries and cities. SI Asia wanted to understand the Corporate AV segment better and we are pleased to get the input of Peter Hunt, CEO of Hewshott International Group.
adoption. Quite a few manufacturers are offering a full IP based solution now, and more will follow but the infrastructure needs to be there, coupled with an open-minded IT Director. Ironically, the use of the systems hasn’t really changed very much – people still need to meet and ‘huddle’ – small formfactor VC systems enable this at a good price point and performance so it’s cheap to roll out and the uptake is high. The Y generation is teaching us that they’re cool with some noise and moving backgrounds as a trade off for immediate face to face communication, so traditional barriers are steadily falling over in favour of ‘on the go’ video communications - it largely reflects what people do domestically with friends and family, thus it is much more acceptable at work. And it's not stopping in the office – the demand for this type of communications on the road is increasing significantly, especially in the Asia Pacific region where travel is a normal part of today’s working life.
Peter, what is changing in terms of Corporate AV? The type of solutions? The type of requirements? What is becoming more prevalent in Corporate AV? There is no doubt that the biggest change is around delivery and types of solutions. Both go hand in hand with each other – as the delivery method changes (move towards IT) so the types of solutions changes. Although most manufacturers are following a pattern of predictability in that their products are addressable over IP, we still see a low take up of full IP
At the building level I think we will see an increase in the rollout of more and more demand on IT. We all know it’s here to stay, but it’s about to jump up a level, and AV, particularly video, is thirsty when it comes to networking. In a few years, everything will be plugged into the network – frankly, it’s
INTERVIEW Systems IntegraƟon Asia October - November 2017
already here. This does mean that IT probably needs to become much more involved in the evolving AV products, get in early and have them tested on the network to ensure they can be used when it’s time to roll out. Any design being done in today’s market for rollout in 2018/19 onwards will not be designed as systems are delivered today.
What does the AV industry need to consider when providing solutions to the Corporate segment? The AV market has 2 clear opportunities in my view – get involved (and qualified) in the IT space – learn to speak their language and become significantly more proficient than we are at the moment. With a handful of exceptions, the AV industry lags our cousins in IT, so a steep learning curve is needed if integrators want to operate in this space. Manufacturers are already on this and moving forward at a rate of knots – the danger is that they will turn to the IT industry to endear their products, which brings me to my second point – training. As an industry in a professional environment, we are poor at this and we need to do better. We also need to retain our ability to bring our core analogue skills into this space and ensure they are recognised. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve seen IP based equipment installed but not tuned or adjusted properly. It’s the difference between a client service and a client experience.
61
What is changing in the Corporate mindset that will affect the AV solutions? I think there’s a trend towards de-cluttering the AV space – streamlining as much as possible. This lends itself to my earlier argument that the rollout of AV is in every space now because it’s so affordable, but it’s also got to be intuitive, and therefore consistent across the business, not just in a single building, but across the region, even around the world. So many of our clients are now standardising on room designs, and these are not being driven out of one particular country or region. We’re seeing proper understanding and appreciation of the world market in designs so they can be achieved globally without tweaking for each country. That’s the power of simplicity – it delivers effectiveness. In support of this, and across the Hewshott offices in Asia Pacific we are starting to see some of the tasks originally allocated to the vendor market go offshore and centralised. With consistency comes standardisation, and that means the same GUI worldwide. This concept has been around for many years, especially in the corporate banking sector, but now many other organisations are rolling out on a large scale, this task is being considered mission critical and handled centrally.

INTERVIEW Systems IntegraƟon Asia October - November 2017
Living The Roller Coaster Excitement by Ram Bhavanashi
SI Asia: Kramer’s evolution began with a desire to power video component of the AV combination. When and where did exactly the Audio focus begin at Kramer?
YUVAL: In the Pro AV industry, audio has always been secondary to video. I get it. The speed of light is a million times faster than the speed of sound; video is exciting, changing and evolving at an astonishing rate: 60Hz, 120Hz, 240Hz, 4K, 8K, 12G, 18G, HDR, 3D, 360°, LED pitch size, projector lumens… it’s truly amazing. On the other hand, audio is much more laid back. The latest true audio revolution was the standardization of stereo somewhere around the end of the 50’s. We’ve been manufacturing audio products for about two decades and due to my father’s keen ability to predict trends before they happen, about five years ago we decided to take audio to the next level. Today, the audio focus can be seen throughout the entire Pro AV industry and I’m both glad and thankful that we’ve had time to do our homework.
SI Asia: Today, we hear and watch Kramer solutions being offered or leveraging three technologies of Hardware, Software and Cloud. Where does audio fit in here?
Yuval Kramer, the young and energetic entrepreneur is, simply said, more than one professional. A musical virtuoso, sound engineer, an audio innovator, and a young entrepreneur. Being the son of the illustrious founder of Kramer Electronics Joseph Kramer is only one aspect of the persona Yuval presents with. As the Director of Audio at Kramer, he is apparently leading what is said to be a sort of revolution in audio technology. An SIA exclusive with Yuval Kramer. Read on:
YUVAL: Audio is very much a part of Kramer solutions. For every product we develop, whether it’s Hardware, Software, or cloud-based, we analyze the audio element from a user’s perspective and decide which audio components we should implement and how: Do we want to process the signal, amplify it, send/receive the signal over the network, change formats, embed or de-embed, or simply mix and distribute it to multiple destinations. While sound might be invisible, audio is everywhere.
SI Asia: Since the initiative began, what have been Kramer’s laurels thus far in the domain? YUVAL: Today we have more than 200 pure audio products, including DAs, mixers, HDMI audio embedders and deembedders – and, of course, Dante, amplifiers, and speakers which continue to show steady growth in sales and market share.
SI Asia: What’s been the most impactful solution? How did it impact the industry?
YUVAL: We launched the KN-DSP100, the industry’s first IP-based DSP at InfoComm 2017 and it was received very well. In fact, besides getting the well-deserved attention and media buzz, it won a ‘Best of Show’ award. The ability to route, manage, and process all your audio installation, and on top of that manage thousands of video encoders and decoders with different permission levels, logs, scenarios, and other

“We’re a part of a wonderful industry at a wonderful time. The rapid changes and the changing demands are like a crazy roller-coaster – it may be hard to hold on sometimes, but it’s always exciting.” management tools – all from anywhere around the world while running on a powerful server – is a massive tool. We aim at giving our customers the best of the best: the product’s infrastructure includes an Intel Xeon-based server and Dante, the most common and reliable audio over IP technology; audio processing by Waves Audio; and management by Kramer Network. We enable our customers with the world’s most powerful tools at their fingertips. Since the market is smarter than ever, more demanding, and more complicated, we want to give our customers everything they need to get their job done as fast as possible and in the best way imaginable.
SI Asia: What’s your take- do manufacturers foresee a need, or set an agenda for a particular solution concept for the industry, or respond to a big requirement with an offering?
YUVAL: Part of the Kramer DNA is to answer questions that come from the market. The need is there, we have eyes and ears everywhere and we’re not embarrassed to ask questions and learn new things. Within every frustration or industry challenge, lies an opportunity and this represents a large part of our work process. Adaptability is one of the most important qualities a person and a company can have in our fast evolving market.
SI Asia: As a manufacturer or product innovator, what essential differences do you feel between the industry geographies of Asia, from that of North America or Europe?
YUVAL: Facebook, LinkedIn, forums, social media and traditional media have really minimized the intercontinental gaps. While trends may vary from place to place, the core of the market need is more similar than one might think. And with audio, it’s even easier. While some areas still use many VGA devices and the gaps are large, audio all becomes analog in the end, and this is true worldwide. In every major territory there are advanced local markets that are early adopters of technology as well as more conservative markets. This is part of the challenge and excitement when it comes to designing new products.
SI Asia: What according to you defines a discerning customer behaviour?
YUVAL: Market research and understanding of the technologies and challenges are critical. Our customers sell our products to their customers, who sometimes sell again to theirs. Being well informed and able to follow the industry trends and technologies is important. Advanced customers maintain a strong relationship with manufacturers, creating a healthy win-win situation between generating demand to the manufacturers and getting better products and solutions to their customers. The more informed you are, the better equipped you are to solve problems. The better equipped you are, the more likely you are to find a solution that will make your customer happy. But I know this is easier said than done.
SI Asia: What you feel the most challenging and / or most exciting?
YUVAL: Trying to stay ahead of the curve, see the next big thing and lead the way. Learning something new every day and making something new is what gets me going. We’re a part of a wonderful industry at a wonderful time. The rapid changes and the changing demands are like a crazy roller-coaster – it may be hard to hold on sometimes, but it’s always exciting.
SI Asia: In your own domain, what excites you the most?
YUVAL: Answering a question and questioning the answer. That’s my thing. Seeing someone understand a new concept and learning from people I meet. That look in their eye, that light bulb above my or their head, is what I enjoy the most. It can happen in any conversation I have, whether it’s with a customer, an R&D guy, a sales guy, an interviewer, or my father. My main goal is to be better today than I was yesterday, both professionally and personally. www.kramerav.com

ingapore’s Changi Airport regularly tops the list of the world’s best airports, featuring a wide range of facilities to inform and delight passengers. Come 31 October, the new T4 terminal will start its official operations introducing a full suite of self-service options from check-in, immigration to boarding, plus two state-of-the-art NanoLumens Performance Series LED displays that will captivate passengers with highdefinition digital content 24 hours a day. Selected as the best digital display solution from a large pool of competing manufacturers, the NanoLumens LED displays allow the beautiful, enthralling visuals created by Moment Factory to achieve their maximum impact for all airport passengers and visitors.
demanding Moment Factory content. The solution required several mechanical enhancements in order to overcome EMI, EMC and other strict RFP specifications. The new rigid Nixel technology is truly optimized for being flat with a larger diode for the highest brightness and is rear serviceable. Being able to access the displays from a high vantage point through rear service will keep traveller visibility of the displays at an absolute maximum.
Located above T4’s centralized security screening area, the “Immersive Wall” is an impressive 70 meters wide by 5 meters tall with a 6mm pixel pitch and has been dubbed one of the largest indoor airport displays in the world. Additionally, NanoLumens was chosen for a 10-meter-wide by 6-meter-tall, 4mm pixel pitch display in the departure transit area’s Heritage Zone, which is built directly into a shophouse facade with several faux building fronts that highlight the island nation’s architectural evolution from the 1880’s to the 1950’s.
Both displays run throughout the day, with the Immersive Wall displaying flowing, geometric waves of 3D animations, picturesque life-like scenes from throughout Singapore, and a funny, playful animation of the imaginary journey luggage takes after check-in. The Heritage Zone display, on the other hand, is integrated convincingly into the zone’s facade, comprising the second floor of two of the buildings and showing Peranakan Love Story, a dramatic original film set in 1930s Singapore. The video seems to blend right into the buildings, giving passersby a seamless view into the country’s cultural history. All of the digital content was produced by Moment Factory. According to NanoLumens Vice President of Sales Almir DeCarvalho, the gorgeous final product is the result of successful collaboration and a highly detailed bidding and engineering process.
Chosen because of their ability to meet strict RFP specifications, NanoLumens created a custom solution specifically for Changi based on a redesign of their proprietary Nixel Series technology that was able to accommodate the

Director, Ronald Goh, was recently listed as one of the top 50 influencers in Singapore as part of the SG50 celebrations. One of the most striking results of this installation was that Nanolumens and E&E delivered every part of the product and installation on schedule, which is rare for a project of this magnitude and complexity. The on-time completion reflects both companies’ strict dedication to the project and corporate culture that prioritizes every client’s satisfaction. “One of the key challenges with this project was in ensuring that the display was aligned and flat over the length of the 70m,” said Gary Goh, Deputy Managing Director, Electronics & Engineering Pte Ltd.

whereas at the Heritage site three units of Y7 d&b speakers were complemented with one unit each of a Y10 d&b speaker and one unit of E6 d&b speaker. “Other than the performance and the form factor, the speakers especially in the Heritage site seamlessly fit into the décor of the shop fronts.” “With roughly a year of just the bidding process, not to mention the actual installation, this was a highly complex project with many, many moving parts,” said Martin Leclerc, Director of International Sales, NanoLumens. “Working with E&E was a great partnership that produced fantastic on-time results, which industry insiders know isn’t always the case with contractors, particularly on large jobs, even this specific one. When one considers the consistent, rigorous testing we performed to ensure our specs were accurate and lived up to Moment Factory’s requirements, it’s obvious everyone involved was focused on every detail, every step of the way.” “At Electronics & Engineering we are very pleased that once again we are involved in an iconic project. The installation had its own challenges and tight deadlines but together with NanoLumens, we were able to deliver on time. We are also grateful to Changi Airport Group and Moment Factory for having the confidence in us to deliver,” said Ronald Goh, Managing Director, Electronics & Engineering Pte Ltd. Visionary Solutions Brings IP Collaboration To RVRC Students The use of Visionary Solutions IPTV provides the school with remarkable configuration flexibility and ongoing savings in terms of maintenance
R
enowned as a hub of education excellence, Singapore is home to many of the world's best schools, where students benefit not just from the latest teaching techniques but from state-of-the-art classroom technology. Arguably nowhere is the link between the two more keenly felt than within the National University of Singapore's Ridge View Residential College (NUS RVRC), where students and faculty live together to encourage a "living-learning program." Following the creation of two smart classrooms equipped with technology from Visionary Solutions, students are also benefitting from flexible and collaborative IP-based learning. Described by the NUS as "a cornerstone in enhancing holistic student development," NUS RVRC is Singapore's first residential college based outside of the city's dedicated University Town development. Officially opened in 2014, the main Kent Ridge campus was quickly deemed a success and an extension swiftly followed, opening in March 2017, with new facilities for both living and learning. The company charged with providing technology for the learning part was leading regional systems integrator and Visionary Solutions partner PAVE.
"Part of our challenge was to equip two Smart classrooms with technology in keeping with NUS RVRC's very high standards and expectations," explains PAVE Sales Director Wang Heng Thean. "The rooms are intended not for traditional tutoring, but as more of a collaborative space where students can work closely and share ideas. Clear communication between them is very important. Both rooms can accommodate up to 24 students, who are divided into four groups, each with its own display. Within these groups, students are encouraged to discuss concepts amongst themselves, collaborate with one another, and exchange ideas using the displays and their own laptop - it's a bring your own device environment. What's more, if a student has an idea the tutor wishes to share with all of the students to encourage broader discussion, then the content in question can be sent to all of the displays, for all to see." It is, he adds, "a fast-changing environment in which the technical element of the classroom simply has to work without barriers. We decided to experiment with the concept of future-proofing the system by using video over IP to replace a conventional matrix video switcher."
INSTALLATIONS Systems IntegraĆ&#x;on Asia October - November 2017
Facilitating the critical HDMI workflow within both classrooms is IPTV technology from Visionary Solutions, comprising seven sources in total. Four Visionary Solutions encoders are fed by the students; a fifth connects with the classroom's Epson document camera; a sixth serves a general use touchscreen, and a seventh is fed by the tutor's own laptop. At the other end of the signal chain, managed by a single Cisco switch, Visionary Solutions decoders feed each student group's Samsung 65" display, as well as a confidence monitor, a single Epson ultra-short throw projector, and the room's AMX control system. "Students are able to share anything from their own laptop - a video file, photographs or a Word document, whatever assists the broader discussion," Wang observes. The fast-paced debate within the classrooms was matched by the urgency of the project itself. "As soon as the decision was made to implement an IPTV solution within the classrooms, it became clear that we had to move quickly to install the technology, with just two weeks for Visionary Solutions to deliver all of the equipment to NUS RVRC," Wang reports. "I'm glad to say that Visionary Solutions were excellent in supporting us to ensure that this goal was met."
67
Indeed, Wang concludes, with the completed classrooms now in full time operation, the network has been met with delight by students and teachers alike. "NUS RVRC is a very prestigious school where only the best is good enough. The use of Visionary Solutions IPTV provides the school with remarkable configuration flexibility and ongoing savings in terms of maintenance. The method has worked very well." www.vsicam.com www.pave.com.sg

K’taka CTO Office Conference Room Refurbished With beyerdynamic
Refursbishment part of implementing state-of-the-art audio-visual set-up for better handling the massive task of GST implementation The Karnataka State Government’s Commercial Tax Office recently refurbished its Conference Room with new audio-visual system, with a view to effectively handling the emerging situation due to the implementation of General Services Tax. Bengaluru-based Hansa Pictures Limited took the honours of installing the new AV system, with its trusted principal beyerdynamic.
T
he General Services Tax – or GST, as it is popularly called – while it had a massive impact on the financial administration of business establishments across the country for the very nature of the regime, it also had a different impact – for a change – on the way the enforcing authorities deliberated on the matter. As the regime required a total overall of the very way tax collection policies and mechanisms, government departments concerned with the regime implementation needed to upgrade their operative systems too. A case in a point is the Karnataka State Government Commercial Tax Office when it decided to refurbish its existing, old conferencing system with state-of-the-art audiovisual set-up for better handling the massive task of GST implementation. That the authorities needed to deliberate with
the officials from across the State on every finer aspect of the regime before it came into effect (31 July, 2017), they wanted to have in place a modern and scalable, yet less complicated conferencing system in place so that their ‘connectivity-acrossthe-network’ is smooth and effective. That the existing set-up at the CTO central office in Bengaluru was almost a 20-year-old structure, it had to be completely overhauled with the latest. Hansa, having been entrusted by the project’s Turnkey Contractor with the task of total refurbishment, proposed a solution that was essentially a traditional video-conferencing set-up, but with futuristic specs. “Our brief was simple, it had to be scalable for all future requirements, but easy to use,” informs Gautam N Shah, HeadProjects at Hansa. “There weren’t many challenges, except a particular spec of video added later, and the very very short time frame.”
INSTALLATIONS Systems IntegraƟon Asia October - November 2017
According to the integrator, while the proposed designed was almost fully approved, the client wanted video-conferencing too to be included, all that had to be complete and commissioned on a fast-track basis so that the client is fully equipped by the time GST came into effect. “Fortunately, we made provision for video-conferencing in the set-up so that wasn’t a big concern,” explains Gautam. The 28 (+1 for the Chair)-seat Conference Room therefore comprised: • 16 units of 12-inch beyerdynamic Classis GM303 S-Condenser Gooseneck microphones • 1 unit of Mipro ACT-311 single-channel Diversity Receiver • 2 units of Biamp VC/Nexia TC digital signal processor • 1 unit of Cloud CX-A850 multi-channel amplifier • 8 units of Community Cloud 4 ceiling speakers • 1 unit of Milestone Pro-MP-HD-88A Video mixer switcher • 1 unit of Wyrestorm SW-0201-4K Scaler • 1 unit of 8-channel switching accentutor • 1 unit of Hitachi WX-4042WN 4000 lumens WXGA Multimedia projector • 1 unit of 113-inch Pixeless motorized screen • 2 units of 50-inch 50K310 VU Ultra HD Smart LED TV • 1 unit of LG retractable monitor • 6 units of Pixeless turnable pop-up boxes • 1 unit of Polycom Real Presence Group 500-720p VC system • 13 units of Clicktronic HDMI cables • 2 units of Kramer VGA cable with audio The Conferencing Room, created on the second floor of the five-storey building amidst the densely populated commercial establishments in Gandhinagar, looks very conventional in size and shape. The 29-seat, rectangular space sports a decent interior décor – done in a combination of vinyl-finish floor and pillars, and pale white walls and ceiling that is treated with diffused lighting.
69
That one side of the Room with huge glass windows aligns with the bustling commercial/residential establishments, the windows are treated with motorized blinds. The Chair, facing the motorized screen at the other end, is equipped with an LG monitor in a retractable fashion so that it can lowered into the slot below the table surface with the touch of a button. Two 50-inch smart LED monitors are pillarmounted on either side of the Chair to facilitate clear and comfortable viewing of content by participants seated far from the large motorized screen. The table is fitted with 16 beyerdyanmic GM303 Classis 12-inch goosenecks with On/Off functionality. At the other end, facing the Chair, is the 113-inch motorized screen below which is the Polycom video camera unit, mounted on the wooden rack. The Hitachi multimedia projector is mounted to the ceiling just facing the screen. “Our choice for beyerdynamic mics and other gear was clear,” says Gautam. “We have been using these brands for years now; they are par excellence,” he vouches. “More, they are available anytime and support us with excellent service back-up.” That the room construction hasn’t provisioned for the videoconference set-up, it did not have a structured ducting for pulling the cable, and the SI had to maneuver the cabling along the floor but with proper concealment so that it doesn’t obstruct proceedings or look ugly. They also had to create a temporary whole to the wall behind the VC camera unit for pulling cable. There were indeed some concerns of connectivity and audio audibility too, the SI was able to troubleshoot with some effort. Overall, the client was happy with the results, as they had their desired system in place before time, and they could perform their intended tasks as per plans. www.beyerdynamic.com

dnp LaserPanel Touch – A Bright Idea For An Interactive Boardroom
Fil-Nippon Technology installs at COL Financial
A
cost-effective, high-quality interactive display, integrated with video conferencing and wireless collaboration. That’s what COL Financial in the Philippines were hoping to achieve when they refurbished their boardroom and Fil-Nippon Technology Supply duly delivered. The boardroom at COL Financial (Citi Securities, a Philippines stock market broker) hosts business-critical meetings as well as seminars and market-strategy presentations for investors. Those presenting - and attending - need more than just a highquality display; they also need video-conferencing capability and an easy way of interacting with charts and data. When the boardroom was refurbished, COL visited the Ultimate Showroom Experience in Makati City, Philippines, to review potential display solutions. Impressed by dnp’s display technology, they commissioned an installation from Fil-Nippon Technology Supply.
A winning combination
Fil-Nippon pointed out that the dnp LaserPanel offers highcontrast images, thanks to its optical screen and ultra-short throw laser projection technology. It is also an economical all-in-one solution in a package that includes the screen, projector, projector mount, IR remote control, WiFi dongle and the LaserCurtain for finger touch. COL went on to select a 100” dnp LaserPanel Touch in preference to 75” TV and standard white screen competitors.
”The cost-effective 100” dnp LaserPanel allowed space in the budget for video-conferencing with a motion sensor camera, a high end sound system, microphone, speaker, wireless collaboration and switching. In other words a complete interactive display solution for the same price as a 100” flat screen TV without any of those valueadding features which are so important in daily use of the solution. So, with the same budget, you get so much more with dnp LaserPanel – and still a fantastic image!”, said Frederick G. Chao, VP-Operations at Fil-Nippon Technology Supply.
Installation and integration
The installation process was straightforward, all components being wall-mounted, and the dnp products integrated smoothly with the company’s ATEN control system. All the equipment can be controlled easily from a tablet, giving the boardroom and its technology a seamless feel. COL comments that interactive communication is vital in its busy boardroom. “We study numerous charts, and often make notes on the board. We had earlier identified how important it was for us to be able to do this. The dnp solution actually delivered everything we were looking for.” www.dnp-screens.com www.filnippon.com

Ngee Ann Polytechnic Transitions To Dante Audio Over IP Networking For Live Sound And Recording
Higher education institution finds value in ease of integration and low-latency signal routing among more advanced operational benefits
N
gee Ann Polytechnic, a higher educational institution in Singapore with nearly 15,000 full-time students, has deployed a Dante Audio over IP network from Audinate to simplify the creation of a self-contained “blackboxstyle” recording space with live performance and audio-visual production capabilities for students. Conceptualized by Kim Lau, formerly senior manager of AV technology for the Ngee Ann Polytechnic and now an adviser, the transition to Dante from legacy interconnections and EtherSound solved the integration and budgetary challenges of building a second digital studio to complement an existing hybrid recording space running on an Avid system. Instead, Dante helped to expedite the creation of a single production area split into four areas: two isolation booths running digital audio workstations; one live sound area with house mixers for
musical workshops and practice; and another area equipped with Mac workstations for recording projects. Kim’s goal was to establish a larger space for students to record and mix projects in a way that mimics a real-world professional recording studio. He also wanted to design an infrastructure that could easily incorporate video signals and lighting for live production purposes, with a common network to transport audio, video and control signals between locations. In his design, Dante shares a dedicated VLAN with control signals without any disruption to Dante’s reliability or digital audio quality. “We saved a significant amount of time and money by deploying Dante, which removed any need to pull XLR cables or multicore from booth to booth. The Dante network uses five
INSTALLATIONS Systems IntegraƟon Asia October - November 2017
interconnection points and a master off-the-shelf switch, and that’s it,” stated Mr. Lau. “The limitations of EtherSound meant that we relied on various bridge and interface devices to move signals, with limited capacity,” said Lau. “We transitioned from a daisy chained architecture to true digital audio networking. Dante clearly provided the low latency, flexibility and capacity we needed to achieve our goals. Dante’s Layer 3 backbone also gives us the flexibility to distribute signals outside of the self-contained recording space to performance venues, which is a benefit we expect to take advantage of in the near future.” The recording space, built around an Avid S6 console and ProTools, incorporates a Dante-enabled DAD AX32 I/O interface, with Dante Virtual Soundcard running on all five Macs. The live sound space utilizes two Dante-enabled mixers, a DiGiCo S21 and a Yamaha Q1, complemented by a Rio 1608D stagebox to support all I/O connectivity. “Dante Virtual Soundcard has been very convenient for everyone, as it removes the need to use a dedicated audio interface,” said Mr. Lau. “We can route sound from any of
73
the Mac workstations to the house system, all over the Dante network. At the same time, Dante has removed much of the burden traditionally associated with digital monitoring in conventional audio production, where we would have to rely on clocking locked into a specific sample rate. We can now connect to various devices for monitoring with ease over the Dante network, and even support varied sample rates.” The latter is especially useful for students working on individual devices. In most cases, the live sound space runs at 48kHz and recording at 96kHz. This can create a very complex situation as users manage and monitor signals with varied sample rates over a common network. “Even with everyone working on separate devices, Dante recognizes these varying rates and cleanly synchronizes all of them on the network,” said Mr. Lau. “That is a huge benefit. From start to finish, Dante has made my life a lot easier.” www.audinate.com

SB Energy NOC Powered By IP-Based 4K Video Wall Aurora Multimedia scores its first project in India in style; does a fast-track install
SB Energy – a SoftBank Group-promoted solar energy joint venture in Andhra – recently achieved what is normally unthinkable. Setting up a 4K video wall in its network operation centre (NOC) in the space of mere one week- from concept to completion! The IP-based video wall installed on fast-track, thankfully due to the expediting of AV gear by the manufacturer and execution by systems integrator. Aurora Multimedia India’s first install in India thus came to it rushing, while the install honour was taken by Bengaluru-based AVILS. An SIA exclusive:
S
B Energy – the solar energy joint venture between the SoftBank Group, Foxconn Technologies, and Bharti Enterprises – some time ago made news headlines when it announced that commissioned the world’s seventh largest solar power project in India. That was about commissioning of 350-MW solar energy project in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh in South India.
They ideated setting up a network operation centre (NOC)cum-War Room on the premises for a holistic monitoring.
Awarded and launched as part of a mega initiative by India’s National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), the project was envisaged to light up as many as 700,000 households.
That the project was already commissioned, and required immediate solution but there wasn’t any specialized provision of cabling and conventional infrastructure, the PMC mulled a fast-track solution. Thus came in the Bengaluru-based Systems Integration firm AVILS.
SB Energy is, in fact, reported to have drawn up massive investment plans for spreading across India’s highly potential solar energy market to set up solar power plants sizing up to 20 GW at a cost of US$ 20 billion. The company is also reported to have entered into a pact with the Government of Andhra Pradesh for setting up 2GW solar and 1GW wind energy generation. That being the backdrop of the setting, SB Energy when it commissioned the 350MW solar power plant, the management realized the need for proper monitoring due to the immensity of the production work, as well as the security requirements.
The company had appointed Mumbai-based Sterling & Wilson – a Shapoorji Pallonji Group concern focused on solar energy turnkey services – as their turnkey contractor and PMC to create the 24/7 NOC-cum-War Room.
“The timeframe for setting up such a NOC was merely a week,” recalls Vamshi Krishna Movva, Director of AVILS. “More, the functionality of the NOC was not just monitoring performance and problem areas of the plant, but also security surveillance,” he explained. The plant premises was already equipped with CC camera surveillance, and the video feed was routed to Security Room. That video feed was to be routed to the NOC and monitored from there.

“Though all Aurora VLX Series units come with built-in Web OS and IPBaseT Manager Software for routing inputs to respective displays and manage all video wall modes, considering the client flexibility, and operational ease, we also provided Control System,” reveals Nataraju Upputuri, Director at Aurora Multimedia India. “That made the complete solution from one OEM.”
The integrator was immediately clear that no traditional solution could fit in; they required something that could leapfrog conventional set-up. “In the given situation, an IP-based set-up was the only option,” Vamshi reveals. “Aurora Multimedia was the only solution in sight, and they perfectly fit into the requirement, exactly the way we wanted,” he explained. According to the AVILS Director, Aurora brought in many advantages. The solution was purely IP-based that did not require traditional cabling set-up; unlike other OEMs on the market, they did not have the procedural hassles of import and procurement time; they had ready inventory and could ship on the spot. More, the systems come with in-built video processors and controllers, thereby eliminate the need for additional units. Thus they save money as well as rack space, making it compact. Deliberations between Aurora and AVILS resulted in the proposition for using professional grade video wall with thin bezel in 3x2 configuration that is powered by Aurora’s VLX 4K AV over IP solution. The proposed solution was approved after a thorough demo to the client in the Experience Centre created in Aurora’s Bengaluru office.
The Aurora Solution: Video/Data over IP The solution therefore comprised:
Inputs: All the IT servers and Surveillance PCs HDMI ports (six units) are to be connected to six units of VLX-TC1-C transceivers in transmit mode Outputs: Six units of VLX-TC1-C transceiver in receiver mode which come with an in-built video wall and scaling features PoE LAN: All transceivers were to be powered through PoE LAN using Netgear Switch GS418TPP 1GbE Layer2 Monitors: Samsung 3.5mm bezel professional monitors in 3 x 2 configuration
That meant Aurora QXT-700-W 7-inch Touch screen with in-built control systems with RS-232, IR, Relays, I/Os and POE LAN weaved into the system. The NOC personnel, as it is, use the SCADA software for monitoring production stats of the plant. In addition, the CC camera feeds from the Security Room was routed to the NOC for overall surveillance. According to the Aurora Exec, their ability to maintain the inventory, and supply systems off the shelf in the extremely time-constrained situation; technological superiority, and compact rack space all contributed to their winning. “That the VLX systems are completely new to Indian market, we worked closely with AVILS team to get it right,” Nataraju explains. “This being a complex project in terms of programming, we did complete programming.”
Client Excited
According to the SI, and the Aurora Exec, the client was simply excited with the functionality the install brought to place. State-of-the-art 4K video wall solution coming with minimal rack space and units, all happening within a space of one week, and ease of use made them simply happy. www.auroramultimedia.com

A Revelation Of Stately AV Deployment By Ram Bhavanshi
An unprecedented scale of AV at UP Secretariat; Bharat Radio Centre prides the honour
Yes, it does give a feel of an unprecedented install- not just in size and scale but also in form and function. The Uttar Pradesh Lok Bhavan – in other words, the State Secretarial establishment – in Lucknow, the capital of India’s most populous State, is simply a revelation of stately deployment of audio-visual and systems integration. In what is a further reinforcement of the statement ‘Indian AV is going places’ the UP State Secretarial establishment plays home to an extraordinarily massive AV install. That the extent of the install is too expansive, SIA presents Part-I of the two-part exclusive.

he Uttar Pradesh State Secretariat – referred to as Lok Bhavan meaning people’s palace in Indian parlance – in short, is a unique establishment in more ways than one. Beginning from basic ideation to final commissioning, it probably makes one of the most inspiring stories for the annals of Indian audio-visual industry. Located right opposite to the heritage-notified ‘Vidhan Bhavan’ (hitherto seat of State Legislative Assembly), and modelled on the design derivations from the same 98-year-old antique structure, the building’s unique characteristics begin with its architecture. That the old Pre-Independent India structure was felt falling short of space to accommodate the increased activities of modern administrators, as also those of high-profile dignitary requirements, the erstwhile government decided to create
this totally new establishment – exactly on the lines of Vidhan Bhavan – that could house the entire state administrative departments, besides the speciality requirements like highprofile conferencing and deliberations. Entirely clad in stone, with double-vacuumed-glass featured sound insulation, and embellished in Italian marble, vitrified tiles and wooden flooring, besides extensive use of highquality teak for interior finishes, the Lok Bhavan complex is an architectural marvel in its own right. Built at a whopping budget of nearly ₹ 602 crore (close to US$92.7 million approx.), and spread over a sprawling 6.3-acrearea, the Lok Bhavan is a three-Block structure. Block-A is an expansive 22,000-square meter facility dedicated to segmented parking that can take about 400 four-wheelers while B-Block is a five-storey building housing all the Chief

Project highlights/unique feature: India’s First DCN multimedia installation; fully integrated with Dome cameras, with file sharing feature; web-enabled screen; four simultaneous channel watching in CM’s office- one single panel Ministerial related facilities and C-Block is a nine-storey building housing all the State Ministerial administrative activities. Blocks B & C together take as many as 1330 official cabins and employee seats. In terms of audio-visual systems integration, these two blocks in combination have too many features to rave about: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Such an extraordinarily extensive integration as it is, the project required a team that has a proven competence and expertise. The government appointed a Technical Committee headed by a Senior Government functionary to bring the exalted ideation to reality. Thus came onboard the Delhi-based Consultancy-Design house Design Associates as the Consultant for exterior as well as interior design, acoustics and AV framework besides the lighting, ELV and HVAC. Massive job that is. Design Associates’ sister concern Tecton Project Services Pvt Ltd came onboard as Project Management Consultant while Lucknow-based systems integrator Bharat Radio Centre was entrusted with installing the AV systems and commissioning the prestigious project. “The client (Government)’s brief was to design and install a state-of-the-art facility keeping in view the modern requirements with technology,” says Vikram Sabharwal, Partner, Bharat Radio Centre, who had been involved in the project install process from day one. “The new edifice was not only to meet the modern and increased requirements but also those arising due to visiting of high-profile national and international dignitaries.”
That the then State Government leadership was apparently trying to create a new economic environment with support from institutions like World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and such others, it foresaw constant interactions with representatives of various national and foreign institutions and that required creation of ‘suitable’ facilities to convene meetings with provisions of sophisticated technology network.. According to the Integrator, considering the scale and diversity of the ideation, and the facilities to be created, they had not only to evolve suitable design for each of the integral part of the project but also create a blue print for those facilities and present to the Consultant. “It took a whole big procedural process and protocol that included, ideation, visualization, evolution of specs, presentation to the Consultant, submission to the Government, and then followed by evaluation and approval by the Technical Committee- subject to the financial component,” explained Vikram.
Challenges Potential
Procedural protocols weren’t the only stretches of journey, as on-site challenges were only quite natural for a project of this scale. “There were many, to list,” admits the Integrator. Going by that, the whole project had to be completed in just three months, and that short span involved coordinated workouts with a lot of agencies- civil, electrical, HVAC and others. “It was particularly challenging in terms of cabling,” details the BRC exec explaining the extent of cabling challenges in the light of one single big change of spec. The initial format of design involved just one Central seat of administration- that of the Chief Minister, and AV cabling was done for his office. However, even as the installation was in progress the State had a change of guard, and the new government had one Chief Minister, and two Deputy Chief Ministers due to which the design spec changed to include two more delegate seats into the system. That meant re-doing the entire cabling and systems integration. That was the technology part. Structurally, they were again not supposed to disturb even in a small manner the rich interior décor, so that was yet another set of challenges. That involved multiple number of testings, trials, measurements of audio specs and video sightlines and more for ensuring a seamless integration of system design with the décor.

Auditorium:
An Autodome camera from Bosch is installed at the rear end of the auditorium, wall-mounted at the Control Room handling the surveillance functions. The most important feature, however, is probably the OB Van Connectivity done in the auditorium. The system features as many as 20 3G HD-SDI to Fiber extenders running all the way up to the dedicated
The client brief for this richly finished 700-seat auditorium was perfection at its best. Housed in B-Block, it was meant to be a multipurpose hall meeting the diverse convention requirements of the government. Enabling the entire facility with wireless transmission was one while uniform speech intelligibility and eye-pleasing video even in highly-lit ambience was the other. To meet this spec, the Consultant proposed installing a Line Array system to ensure delivery of uniform coverage of high quality audio at all audible locations in the hall. This was to be complimented by a highbrightness DLP projection. That the video has to be visible even in highly lit ambience, it was proposed to install a 20,000-lumen, high-brightness Christie Roadster projection system. However, the big challenge for the integrator came in the form of extremely short span of 15 days due to the announcement of State Assembly election. BRC, a premium partner of Bosch, Christie and Kramer in the region, chose to bring in those trusted principal brands to the install. Accordingly, the AV solution for the venue was designed with 16 units of EV XLD 281, dual 8” Compact Line Array speakers powered by QRX 218 dual 18” Subs. This system is further augmented by EV TX1152 Floor Monitors and ZX1i90B as Front Fills- all powered by EV Q series Amplifiers and controlled by a pair of DX46 DSPs. Mixing and processing of audio had been entrusted to a 22-channel Dynacord CMS2200 mixer. The screen was made of the cyclorama while the projection system featured a 20,000 Lumen three-chip Christie unit. The entire control network had been entrusted to Kramer system featuring the Via Collaboration system.

Press OB vans parked outside the facility. “This was done due to the spec for an uncluttered transmission of the proceedings of 3G HD-SDI to Fiber extenders for the auditorium to the OB Van Connectivity Press vans outside,” explains Vikram. “This was an innovation in design brought to place keeping in view the focus of the administration on having the ‘best of the times’ AV network, and its ability to communicate with the public medium.” (To be cont’d in Part-II: Massive and expansive that the install is, SI Asia chose to present the rest of the installation, and user impressions in Part-II to be featured in the Dec’17Jan’18 issue)

New Majestic Hotel Ends Operations In Style Artist Tan Yang Er transforms a room with the help of a Canon projector project a visual that is three meters wide, and that would not cut it for Yang’s exhibit to work to full effect.

O
n the weekend of the 27th and 28th of May, the New Majestic Hotel saw its swan song after 11 years of operation. Multiply: A Majestic Playground was a rich and vibrant one-time-only takeover of the building as over 50 of Singapore’s most inspiring artists, designers, makers, craftsmen, and chefs came together to tell their stories in their own brilliant way. Past the purple-hued corridors and rooms with makeshift tattoo studios, awaited a message in room 401, called Bejeweled: Majestic Edition for the weekend. Tan Yang Er, affectionately going by Yang, was given the liberty to transform her room in any way she wanted her story told. “The theme for the event is Play; to get people to come out and play, so I thought everyone must be familiar with Bejeweled!” explained Yang. Bejeweled, of course, is the popular tile-matching puzzle video game first developed in 2001. Yang went on to organize the room in similar kaleidoscopic fashion as the game, but found herself with one missing piece to the puzzle.
Canon stepped in with the XEED WX450ST Projector. Equipped with the Short-Throw feature, it eliminates space limitations by displaying two-metre diagonal images when placed just over a metre from the screen. Its AISYS optical system, the latest and most efficient of Canon’s optical technologies, features 4500 lumens of projection brightness and a 2000:1 contrast ratio, hence delivering accurately vivid colours. In addition, its LCOS display technology facilitates smooth and seamless imaging with the professional-quality optics of this projector far exceeding the resolution of conventional 4K digital equipment. “I had no idea there was so much to learn about projectors!” Yang laughed. Indeed, Canon’s short-throw projector comes as a game-changer, encouraging new-age learning environments facilitated by presentations. Yang herself found the projector fruitful to tell her story the only way she wanted to. Yang was inspired by her travels, always looking to bring stories back home and sharing them through technicoloured shapes and sounds. “I’m all for creating a world to tell a story, and that means involving most of our senses. Canon’s Short-Throw Projector features allowed me to create just the immersive experience I needed to share,” Yang looked delighted to share. www.canon.com.sg
“I usually work with nature, but I wanted to make this as immersive as I could. I could have painted a visual background, but what’s the kick? That’s why I needed projections, sounds, and lights to make it more multi-dimensional.” Yang’s need for tech support came with a caveat; the space constraints of the room. She needed to project a full-sized visual on the room’s wall with just 2.8 meters of the room to play with. A typical projector would require over five meters to (Ed Note: Though this is not a permanent installation we felt this project merited space as to how AV is able to play a part in a constrained environment)

How Your Choice Of Technology Could Be Impacting The Learning Experience… Early this year I enrolled in a further education course. Of course, by the time it eventually came around the excitement that had blossomed at the prospect of furthering my education in the industry had naturally been weathered into a healthy, if not determined, resignation to just get through it. True to the nature of these things, there was a last minute venue change, completely inconsiderate to all my careful research on where to park, where there was good food for lunch, what the traffic was like in the area, and of course, the all important question, was there free wifi. Thankfully I wasn’t the only one impacted by this sudden and inexplicable change of location. As the woman leading the seminar came rushing in 15 minutes late, flushed and flustered, having set up her entire presentation in a building three streets away, I had to wonder if someone didn’t deliberately orchestrate these kind of ridiculous relocations, just to flex their muscles and remind everyone how much chaos administration could create should they put their mind to it. Having worked in administration myself, I can understand the temptation. As the woman fumbled to put down her bag, papers and laptop I could almost hear the internal groan going through her mind as she turned around to survey the equipment at her disposal. “Oh no. Technology.” I feel like this is a common response people have when faced with an unfamiliar environment. What god awful ordeal will this bipolar projector inflict on me? Is it compatible with my laptop? How do I even connect to it? OK yep, that’s my screen but why is it all skewif? Its working!...wait it just turned itself off. I mean let’s face it, not everyone can be a technology whisperer (or birth one to exploit in the case of my parents). And why learn it anyway? As the woman leading my seminar was about to find out, you could have everything correctly cabled but if the stars didn’t align, it just wasn’t going to happen. She called for reinforcements. Enter hotel concierge one and two. They’re confused. Hospitality 1.0.1 never covered temperamental technology. Concierge one tries to maintain professionalism whilst asking redundant questions. “So it’s not working?” “It never works.” The course speaker was not impressed. Meanwhile concierge two is on the floor, following cables on his knees like a cartoon character following a fuse line to the giant comical pile of TNT. The course speaker decides that enough time has been wasted and launches into her introduction without the assistance of her

prepared media. It’s good and she knows her stuff, but I can’t help but be distracted by the “despicable me” minion-esqe figures running around behind her. Eventually, the projector decides it’s ready to co-operate. It’s kept us in suspense long enough. The class of 14 literally cheer and the hotel concierges smile and leave with one last apology. Now she has her powerpoint running, the speaker is getting more and more animated and I have to admit, it’s contagious. We are all getting involved, and I’m actually starting to internally praise the past version of myself for orchestrating this genius idea instead of my usual grudging resent for it. This course is amazing. I’m learning so much. Mid-discussion of the importance of brand positioning came interruption number two. An awful sound has everyone straining to see what is going on. Concierge two is back. You see, part of their fix for getting the technology working involved running a lot of cables across the room so naturally (OH&S tripping hazard and what not) they now have to stick all those cables down. The speaker doesn’t care. She is determined. So, so determined to get through this. As a show of solidarity, the rest of us nod along to her next slide, vigilantly pretending a small man isn’t crawling around on his hand and knees under our table, tearing strips of gaffa with his teeth for the greater good of the collective. You’d think that the worst of it was over then, but there was to be just one last technology issue. It was just after morning tea and I had such pity for what this woman had been through I let it go on longer than I should have. I kept praying that someone else would speak up so I wouldn’t be the one to make this poor woman’s day worse, and not just because she looked like she was going to snap and I was seated dangerously close to the front. Because it was unfair. She knew her stuff, she was an excellent speaker, she had even memorised all our names and backgrounds, and yet technology was determined to undermine her. You see, at some point, during all the pacing and emphatic hand gestures and constantly returning to her laptop to click onto the next slide, she had come to stand directly in front of the projector. There she was, making specific references to good and bad examples of logos, asking us if we recognised specific colours or shapes as a brand. Trying desperately to drum up student participation and not one of us could see the slide she was referring to. Well we could, it was just really small and in the middle of her chest. Thankfully, she was obviously a very well natured person, because when I eventually plucked up the courage to tell her we couldn’t see anything she managed to laugh, commenting something along

the lines of “Ugh technology is never easy, is it?” At the time I laughed along with her in agreement. I wasn’t about to argue with her on top of everything else. But her comment stayed with me. Isn’t it ever easy? Technology doesn’t have to be hard. Not with the right equipment. Perhaps I have been spoilt by the mere fact that I work in the technology industry, with a product specifically designed for presenting with ease on any platform. I wanted to tell her that it didn’t have to be that way. In fact, I even tried coaxing some of the support guys at my work into letting me take one of our Interactive Touchscreens with me for my next course. Like any normal human being, the idea of getting up in front of people and presenting is a daunting one for me. But at least at my office and the office of our dealers I can approach all my presentations with a level of confidence. Confidence that comes from knowing our Commbox Touchscreens are going to work. That I can turn them on and plug in my laptop and just start. No need to install drivers, or muck around with multiple cables. I don’t have to think about where I am standing, or dim the lights or call for IT reinforcements. I’m excited for my next course, but I’m also a little sad. When I left my course, I felt like I had absorbed and learnt so much. I had all these fresh ideas I was keen to put into action and felt overall positive about the experience. It was only when I got home, and re-read some of the handouts, that the truth became obvious. Those first few pages of notes were foggy to me. I vaguely remembered them, but not nearly as clearly as the rest of the content. Technology had let the speaker down. All the delays and distractions in getting the projector working, the user issues with the speaker standing in front of it had had an impact. Small, yes. But measurable. I had notes, and I could relearn the information. But I wanted to learn. I had a vested interest in it. What if the speaker had been an ordinary teacher? Presenting not to adults there by choice but children who already have 1000 reasons to be distracted. What if the speaker wasn’t teaching course content, but making a sales pitch or outlining an important strategy? I wanted to share this story because I wanted to demonstrate just how crucial technology can be. More importantly, the correct technology. I may be biased but I honestly believe that had the speaker of that course been running a CommBox Touchscreen and not a projector her day would have run a lot smoother.
