WHAT’S UNIQUE ABOUT OUR RANKINGS?

Three of the world’s top four business schools rankings have featured us

In each of these rankings, we are the youngest school featured

We have been ranked as one of Asia’s top five business schools by Forbes and the Economist.

IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS OF OUR ELEVEN-YEAR-OLD HISTORY, we have been ranked among the world’s best business schools by top international authorities like the Economist, Forbes and the Financial Times – an accomplishment we attribute to our unique and innovative approach to business education. For instance, we are one of the world’s first business school to offer a tri-city model of education. All of our full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students study in three of our four campuses. That’s because, we believe that classroom learning, though important, is insufficient in preparing leaders of tomorrow. For example, how you do business in China can be very different from how you do business in India or the US. The ability to comprehend this difference and successfully apply it when interacting with different teams and cultures is what differentiates S P Jain graduates in the workplace.

What do some of the world’s top employers seek in the new graduates they hire? Hard skills that help them do their jobs or soft skills that help them lead, innovate, communicate, solve problems, make decisions and work in high-stress situations with diverse teams of people? A survey, quoted in UK’s Fox magazine, reported that seventyseven percent of employers said they were seeking candidates with soft skills. Over sixteen percent of the 2,138 hiring managers and HR professionals interviewed in this survey considered soft skills more important than hard skills when evaluating candidates for a job. Another research finding by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, USA, ranked the ability to work in teams, make decisions and solve problems, communicate effectively and process information as the skills employers most want in the graduates they hire.

POSTGRADUATE EDUCATION AT S P JAIN Recognising the increasing need for business professionals to assume different roles and achieve several organisational objectives, the academic community at S P Jain has reimagined its postgraduate curriculum to focus on more real-world aspects of business like strategic thinking, critical analysis, global intelligence, problem-solving, effective communication and the development of important soft skills, without actually compromising on hard skills. Many aspects of this new curriculum have been inspired from intensive review of industry practices and trends, and stimulating discussions with top recruiters, multinational faculty, staff, students and alumni on how business schools can create a global, relevant and engaging learning. FOUR KEY ELEMENTS CHARACTERISE OUR NEW POSTGRADUATE CURRICULUM • A BLENDED LEARNING MODEL that combines the best of online and face-to-face learning. • Online learning cultivates the habit of ‘self-learning’ while face-to-face interactions help in the • development of critical thinking, analytical and decision-making skills • Larger EMPHASIS ON GLOBAL LEARNING to help students understand cultural differences and • their resulting impact on business practices • Introduction of intense 1-week IMMERSION COURSES that enable students to dig deep into • cutting-edge, up-to-the-minute business topics • Substantial use of COMPUTER-AIDED SIMULATIONS to impart practical training to students. This • has proven to be one of the most effective ways to learn as each simulation mimics the complex • and highly volatile world of business. LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE NEW POSTGRADUATE CURRICULUM 1

Gain the latest disciplinary and interdisciplinary business and management knowledge to aid planning and control in a dynamic global environment

2

Understand business issues and acquire disciplinary and interdisciplinary skills to responsibly solve problems in local and global contexts

3

4

Make sound decisions and solve complex business problems using problem with the use of tools and models

5

However, the $1.3 trillion logistics industry is facing a huge recruitment challenge. A new report by MHI* says that by 2018, the logistics business will be looking to fill about 1.4 million jobs, or roughly 270,000 per year. - Fortune, USA *MHI (Material Handling Institute – a USbased material handling, logistics and supply chain association)

A great aspect of the MBA experience is the Industry Interface Project. These Projects are directed towards creating a higher degree of exposure to the real corporate environment. The idea is to enhance the employability of students. This is achieved by assimilating a body of knowledge and applying it in live situations.

INDUSTRY INTERFACE PROJECT IS DIVIDED INTO TWO PHASES

APPLIED RESEARCH PROJECT

ACTION LEARNING PROJECT

The ARP focuses on applying reasearch tools and techniques across an industry-specific theme and is issue-based. It culminates with a report providing a strong grounding in research skills.

The ALP integrates learning through management challenges focusing growth, innovation, and competitive advantage for a specific company. Students create consultant-level reports providing actionable strategic directions for an organisation, boosting their confidence in identifying and resolving problems in unstructured, real-life situations.

A Global MBA candidate enters in ARP phase as a researcher and emerges from the ALP phase as a capable decision-maker, consultant and team player. The initiative is structured to enable you to gain knowledge, functional understanding and real-time exposure to the industry environment. Later they integrate and apply the knowledge as they grapple with a problem facing a real company. The idea is to minimise reliance on internet research and to maximise primary research and tacit knowledge and application. This fosters a natural progression from a structured decision-making (required at the operational levels) to commanding unstructured situations (required of senior management). While engaging in both components, students gain substantial regional exposure, which is a key differentiator of the Global MBA program. Students interact with the local businesses to experience, not only the technical, but also the behavioural dimensions of business operations in different regions and cultures. The complete research endeavour is guided by in-house and corporate mentors and has multiple components such as literature review, viva, presentations, and reports.

“eCommerce has a fantastic long-term global growth outlook. The total market today is huge – over $1 trillion and predicted to grow at 17% per year. And we are just at the beginning of the beginning. Online selling is well established in the US, but there are immense growth opportunities left in emerging markets. The burgeoning eCommerce market in China now delivers sales of $1 billion – per day. Imagine how eCommerce will continue to boom as India, Brazil, Russia, Southeast Asia and other emerging markets catch eCommerce fever? Mobile commerce is just a few years old and is already capturing 20% of eCommerce sales. Guess what happens to eCommerce as tablets and smart phones sweep the world in the next 10 years? So, whether eCommerce becomes your long-term love affair or not, spending three years there can give you skills and experience that will be in red-hot demand for at least the next 15 years.” Brian Fetherstonhaugh Chairman & CEO of OgilvyOne Worldwide

INNOVATION AT S P JAIN The current model of education – the one that most business schools follow – was designed nearly a century ago and though there have been some changes, they have all been relatively minor. Our new model of business education recognises that globally, education, like everything else, is undergoing a transformational change: • THE SHIFT FROM LOCAL TO GLOBAL: Almost every business operates at a global scale and to succeed in the business world of the 21st century, one needs to be prepared • THE SHIFT FROM KNOWLEDGE TO SKILLS: Textbook knowledge and business literature are giving way to decision-making and problem-solving skills, the cornerstones of business • USE OF TECHNOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM: Technology is not just a solution but an enabler of change and innovation in the classroom Many of the innovative elements we use in our classroom, reflect these trends. Like our multi-city model that allows students to live, study and work in not one, but three global cities (imagine spending 12 months in 3 cities!), or our multimedia Simulation Centres that train business managers with the same level of sophistication employed in training pilots. We are unique because unlike most schools, we don’t stop at classroom sessions on business fundamentals and paper examinations. We take business education one step forward by focusing on subjects and experiences that help you build the skills, critical thinking capabilities, global agility and confidence needed to make your profile attractive to employers from virtually every field. Our postgraduate classes often witness a powerful fusion of technology, innovation and global business, resulting in an impactful and real-world learning experience. Here are some examples of our most recent innovations.

Studying in three of the world’s best cities, you will graduate with a well-defined global perspective that employers value.

TRI-CITY LEARNING MODEL Most business schools operate on a single campus and don’t really cover the importance of understanding the global business environment. Doing business in China can be very different from doing business in India or the US. What’s truly unique about S P Jain is the opportunity that we provide students to truly understand and soak in multinational business environments and cultures through our unique tri-city model. The entire duration of your postgraduate study is spent in the cities of Dubai, Sydney and Singapore. Why? Each of the three cities is a regional capital and offers you an array of opportunities to understand the world of business as it really is — global, dynamic and ever evolving. SINGAPORE is ranked #1 in the world for ‘ease of doing business’ by the World Bank, and is highly reputed for its governance and forward-thinking society. As one of Asia’s fastest growing economies, Singapore offers you a first-hand exposure to unique Chinese and Southeast Asian business practices. DUBAI is at the forefront of the world’s dynamic and emerging market economies, and is known for its liberal policies, international outlook and world-class facilities and infrastructure. “Dubai means business” is more than just a slogan. Here, you study and understand Arabic culture and appreciate Middle East politics in a secure, ultra-modern setting. SYDNEY has it all – beaches, great outdoors and a pulsating arts and music scene. It is home to some of the world’s largest banks, retail firms, a thriving mining industry and the centre for modern design and architecture. As a mature first-world city, Sydney offers you a safe, stimulating and enriching environment to explore life in a Western culture.

The benefits of an international study go way beyond having a great experience. In a recent 50year survey of study abroad alumni, three quarters said they acquired skills sets that influenced their careers path; 80% reported more interest in their academic studies and 96% said their time abroad increased their self-confidence. –Richard Stengel (Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, United States)

GLOBAL IMMERSION AND OUT-OF-CLASSROOM EXPERIENCES form an important part of the S P Jain postgraduate curriculum. We believe in learning by doing and experiencing. And that is exactly what you will do in the three cities you travel to. Together with the rest of your class, you will have opportunities to conduct projects with top companies, network and build strong connections with opinion leaders, thinkers and visionaries, participate in local events, go on cultural tours, develop a portfolio of global experiences and over a period of time, develop the skills needed to lead teams across countries and cultures.

1

BLENDED FORM OF LEARNING

A vibrant feature of the new postgraduate curriculum is the introduction of a Blended Model of Learning. Conventional MBA programs are made of a combination of knowledge-centric courses and their application in the real world. S P Jain’s recently revamped postgraduate curriculum, on the other hand, uses advanced online tools (like webinars, multimedia lessons, problem solving sessions) to deliver foundational and knowledge-based courses to students even before the program commences. This leaves more time on campus for more advanced application-based learning. But more importantly, the discipline of online learning enhances LEARNING AGILITY (the ability to self-learn) and BETTER RETENTION OF BUSINESS FUNDAMENTALS since students learn at a pace that suits them. HERE ARE SOME SUBJECTS THAT ON CAMPUS, THESE SUBJECTS ARE TAUGHT ONLINE HAVE BEEN REPLACED BY VALUEADDED COURSES LIKE Microeconomics

Design Thinking

Macroeconomics

Decision-Making

Finance

Digital Decision-Making

Marketing

Value Creation & Competitive Strategies

These courses are important because they enable you to: •  ask the right questions to frame issues •  use the right tools to analyse data •  synthesise information to create value •  innovate using the concept of Design Thinking •  use digital technology to develop high quality solutions and add value to your organisation

2

BUSINESS SIMULATIONS

Pilots train to fly in cyclonic weather on the ground using advanced flight simulators. Business too operates on similar conditions of high volatility, complexity and unpredictability. Computeraided business simulations are used extensively in our state-of-the-art Simulation Rooms, the first-of-its-kind in any business school in Asia, to enable students to sharpen their real-world and decision-making skills in the most modern and effective way.

3

STUDENT BOARD ROOMS

Our MBA students participate in study groups called Student Board Rooms (SBRs), where realworld business issues are discussed to enable decision-making through peer learning. The objective of these Student Board Rooms is to train the mind to make the most effective decisions in a complex and uncertain world.

4

DECISION-MAKING LABORATORIES

Decision-making is the lifeblood of any business manager. Recognising this, S P Jain’s postgraduate curriculum offers students an engaged learning environment in which the classroom transforms into a decision-making laboratory. These labs simulate real-world corporate environments where students come together to work on case studies and analyse problem areas, discuss strategies, assess risks, evaluate alternatives, and over a period of time, master the art of decision-making.

“Research shows that Learning Agility is a reliable indicator of leadership potential because learning agile people “excel at absorbing information from their experience and then extrapolating from those to navigate unfamiliar situations”. The Five Dimensions of Learning Agile Leaders Forbes, USA

S P Jain was a great place to be! I got to learn a lot and for me, it was more about the global experience than the academic side. Coming from Africa, the Western model of education is always considered the best and is the most appreciated in the region. However, I have always believed in the “Look East” philosophy.
