A Message from our Supreme Lodge President

It is my pleasure to welcome SPJST delegates, members, and distinguished guests to the 31st SPJST Convention and to Killeen, Texas. I also extend sincere appreciation to our SPJST standing committee members for their dutiful job in laying the groundwork for this 31st Convention. Thank you, too, to everyone who contributed their time, energy, and ideas to the pre-convention process. As a result of these efforts, I hope that you find your convention experience both stimulating and rewarding. I also hope that you are able to take advantage of the social activities on Sunday and Tuesday that have been planned for your enjoyment. Monday night has been left open for you to visit with fellow delegates and confer on matters of relevance to this 31st Convention.

Brian Vanicek

Held every four years since 1912, the SPJST convention is a healthy and vigorous exercise in democracy. The convention represents a genuine partnership between members and management in matters of Society business. The democratic processes of our convention aim to preserve and promote the fundamental rights of the members, foster the economic and social development of SPJST and strengthen the cohesion of our fraternal order.

Fraternalism — at its best — seeks to build and strengthen relationships. This is an idea that we can weave into every SPJST fraternal activity, meeting, training program, and operating procedure. With strong relationships come vitality, adventure, the freedom to strive, and to create. Meaningful involvement makes men, women, boys, and girls happy in the work that they are doing. May we all, during this 31st Convention, keep these thoughts in mind as we strive to achieve a higher standard of performance and achievement. Best wishes for an enjoyable and productive convention. Fraternally,

Brian Vanicek, FIC

A Message from our Supreme Lodge Chairman

Welcome to our 31st SPJST Convention. It is with my deepest desire that your time spent here will be considered worthwhile, and you will experience a feeling of accomplishment. On behalf of the Officers, Directors, and Home Office Staff, I want to thank you for being an integral part of a process by which we promote the progress of our Society to make it stronger and more successful in meeting the opportunities and challenges which we face in this 21st century. We cannot fall behind our peers but move ahead with great vision to ensure the success of this great organization. When our time here is over, may we all feel a sense of pride and accomplishment in knowing we all did our best to make this possible. The future of this Society lies in our hands.

We must remember that we are a large family which has been in existence for 115 years. Our forefathers have provided us with a great foundation, and we cannot forget what has been accomplished, but we must move forward to promote an organization which has grown and has an excess of $200 million in assets. We must change many of the ways in which we do business because of changes in the times Donnie Victorick and the development of technology and new ways to accomplish our goals; mainly the preservation of the fraternal system and our Czech heritage. We are not just an insurance company but a fraternal which must rely on its members to take an active role in the progress and future of our Society. Without new, active members, we cannot grow. We must continuously work together to accomplish our purpose and ensure our existence well into the future. What we do here at this 31st convention will have an impact on the future.

May this convention be one of innovation and change to ensure that we are ready to meet the opportunities and challenges which we face. I hope we can all look back in a few years and know we made a difference and continued to chart the future of SPJST.

May God bless all of us, and let’s put aside personal agendas and do what is in the best interest of our fraternal organization so we can continue to grow and achieve our intended purpose. Fraternally,

Donnie Victorick, CFFM

Czech Center Museum Houston Resolutions

Resolution background: The SPJST Fraternal Organization organized in 1897 was founded on the principles of fraternalism and fraternal life insurance believes that every individual has a responsibility to help each other. They are requesting a letter or resolution that could be included in their commemorative convention book on celebrating their thirty-first convention in June 2012. This organization has been a strong supporter of our mission of the preservation of Czech heritage and culture through financial support and shared members of both organizations. Effie Rosene wrote the following letter to President Vanicek in 2008 which we believe is true today: I am honored and privileged to acknowledge the tremendous accomplishment of SPJST observing its 111th Anniversary in the year 2008. Not many institutions achieve this stellar age all the while maintaining its lofty goal “fraternalism and fraternal life insurance are founded upon the principle that every individual is his ‘brother’s keeper’ and that each of us has a responsibility to help each other,” which from this observer’s view the SPJST has certainly achieved! It should be noted that the preamble to your bylaws states”….to endeavor to keep alive the cherished traditions, customs, heritage, culture and language of our forefathers.” This is certainly an integral part of the mission of the Czech Center Museum Houston and in that sense we are “brothers” in keeping and maintaining that ideal. From this observer’s vantage point your organization has met the challenges of keeping alive the spirit and mission of its founders and the Czech Center Museum Houston wishes for the SPJST another one hundred and eleven years of service to its members! We look forward to many years of close association. May I ask the Board’s consideration of the following resolution? 1

The Board of Directors of the Czech Center Museum Houston is proud to recognize The Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas on the auspicious occasion of their ThirtyFirst Convention as they consider the continuation of their mission of fraternalism through benevolence, humanity and brotherhood. The Board also recognizes the encouragement and the financial support to our organization SPJST and its members have made since our founding in 1995. This cooperative support has been a great assist to us in the furtherance of our mission of preservation of our Czech and Slovak heritage and culture. The SPJST is a shining example of an organization whose very existence supports the common good and our civil society.

Melanie: Our Board of Directors has approved the resolution above. Bill Rosene Secretary

Since the start of the SPJST Education and Nature Center project at Cooper Farm, close to 10,000 people have walked through our doors for programs ranging from summer camp, educational sessions, family retreats, weddings, and many local community functions. Although we are not officially part of SPJST, the relationship that exists between our two organizations has shown positive benefits for both. SPJST ENC has been able to reach out to people who would have otherwise never heard about SPJST, and many people who use the SPJST ENC come based on the knowledge of SPJST. Of course, the SPJST Youth Program has been enjoying the use of the facility, but did you know that some of the other current groups that utilize the facility include FFA, Agri-life, Texas Parks and Wildlife, 4-H, religious groups, and other fraternal organizations like KJT and KJZT? SPJST ENC is working and growing to achieve a better understanding of the outside world and where we came from. We ask for your continued support and invite you to come tour and use our facility for your activities as well. SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm is located at 2001 Waldeck Road in Ledbetter, Texas.

Best wishes at the 2012 SPJST Convention! 86

Artist Troy Kelley’s rendering of the Fort Hood November 5th, 2009 Memorial to be constructed on the grounds of the Killeen Civic and Conference Center

Thanks to the SPJST Family for generously supporting the Fort Hood November 5th, 2009 Memorial

On the afternoon of November 5, 2009, gunfire erupted inside the Soldier Readiness Center at Fort Hood, Texas. Thirteen Americans were sacrificed for their country. Thirty-two were wounded.

The victims were mainly men and women who were preparing to deploy to battle zones and others who had just returned from overseas. Thanks to the heroic intervention of two Fort Hood police officers, the shooting rampage was brought to an end. In the aftermath of this tragic event, memorial services were held to pay tribute to those who died or who had been injured. From that outpouring of emotion and out of the desire to honor and remember the victims of that tragic event arose SPJST’s idea of establishing a permanent public and living memorial.

As approved by the Killeen City Council, the Fort Hood November 5th, 2009 Memorial will include a memorial pavilion and garden on the grounds of the Killeen Civic and Conference Center. The site will honor the

victims and provide a historic record of this tragedy in order to deliver a message of vigilance for generations to come.

To date, more than $107,000 has been deposited in the Killeen Volunteers, Inc. account which is accepting donations for the Memorial. This amount does not include pledges for funding or materials and construction support which have been made. Approximately $500,000 is being sought. This amount will include an endowment fund to provide for the maintenance and upkeep of the memorial and garden. Already, work is proceeding on the individual memorials that will honor those who lost their lives.

Please know that your contribution is very important and deeply appreciated. Killeen Volunteers, Inc., Taxpayer ID# 1-74-6001504-7, which is handling the donations, is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit corporation. To contribute support, schedule a presentation for your lodge, or to host a fundraising event, please contact SPJST President Brian Vanicek at 800.727.7578.

This message posted thanks to a generous donation by Bailey, Ramsey and Associates. 101
