TOCA invites SPJST lodges to participate in 2025 Awards Reception and Banquet
Annually – from 1987 through 2018 – SPJST honored its outstanding fraternalists through its Fraternalist of the Year Program. The objective was to extend grateful acknowledgment to individuals who had demonstrated outstanding service to the lodge or the community. It was a good program; however, waning participation prompted the Society to discontinue it in 2019.
Since that time – and on an annual basis – Texans of Czech Ancestry (TOCA) – an umbrella organization that serves to improve and facilitate communication among Czech-oriented organizations have hosted an annual celebration on the grounds of the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange to recognize organization volunteers who have displayed exemplary leadership towards the preservation and/or invigoration of Czech heritage throughout the state. In that the TOCA program seeks to commend volunteers for a job well done, it is somewhat reminiscent of SPJST’s old Fraternalist of the Year program.
Meeting in La Grange, Texas, on January 19, TOCA representatives voted to open their annual Appreciation Awards Reception and Banquet in 2025 to include honorees from SPJST, KJT, KJZT, and Czech Heritage Society of Texas local chapters. SPJST President/ CEO Brian Vanicek and SPJST Vice President of Communications Melanie Zavodny both serve as representatives to TOCA.
The primary criteria for a lodge to consider in submitting an individual –
or couple – for recognition is that it be someone who has demonstrated longstanding commitment and made a notable impact on the preservation and/or invigoration of Czech heritage in Texas. Lodges wishing to participate in the 2025 TOCA program are requested to submit their honoree’s photo and 100word biographical sketch to the attention of Vice President of Communications Melanie Zavodny by US mail (PO Box 100, Temple, Texas 76503-0100) or email (melanie@spjst.com) on or before Saturday, March 1, 2025.
All honorees will be honored at the TOCA Appreciation Awards Reception and Banquet to be held on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at the Pavilion located on the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center campus in La Grange. The event will begin at 4 p.m. with the Wine and Cheese Reception hosted by SPJST, followed by the awards program at 5 p.m. and dinner at 6 p.m. Event tickets are $15 each, and lodges are not limited to the number of guests who may attend. Checks may be made payable to “TOCA” and mailed to TOCA, c/o Kevin Kana, PO Box 297, La Grange, Texas 78945. Please include your SPJST Lodge name and number and each attendee’s name. RSVP deadline is Saturday, March 1.
For more information, please contact Vice President of Communications Melanie Zavodny at 254-534-0807 or by email at melaniez@spjst.com. —SPJST—

It’s Your Life
Join Me in Jackson Hole!
When planning vacations in the USA, popular choices often include Las Vagas, Orlando, Washington DC, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Las Angeles. These are the epitome of tourist destinations offering everything a visitor could ask for. While it’s exciting to explore these urban landscapes with family, such trips often come with hectic schedules and little time for relaxation.
This year, why not opt for a real vacation? Let’s embrace the stunning natural beauty America has to offer, and truly unwind. I’m inviting you to explore Wyoming with me—home to Jackson Hole, Yellowstone, and Glacier National Parks, as well as the majestic Grand Tetons. Surrounded by breathtaking mountains and serene rivers, this trip offers a chance to witness some of the best wildlife in their natural habitats.
SPJST has provided our agents the opportunity to earn this trip, and now I extend the invitation to you. Join us to meet our team, learn more about what we do, and share stories about our families. I’m looking forward to a week of beauty and relaxation, and I’d love for you to be part of it.
Our Itinerary Through America’s Wilderness:
Day 1 - Montana: Early this morning, we board our motorcoach for transport to the Austin airport (you may also fly out of Houston or Dallas) for our flight to Kalispell, Montana. Upon arrival, another motorcoach will be waiting to transport us to our hotel. This evening, you can get to know your traveling companions at our welcome dinner.
Day 2 - Glacier National Park: Glacier National Park offers a million acres of the finest mountain scenery you’ll ever
see. The U-shaped valleys and high peaks were carved by vast glaciers that covered this area during the last Ice Age. We are passengers on one of Glacier National Park’s special touring vehicles for a spectacular tour along the “Going to the Sun” highway, one of the most breathtaking roadways in the world, crossing the Continental Divide at Logan Pass. This area is a veritable fairyland of snow frosted peaks and sparkling ice caps. We overnight again in Montana.
Day 3 - Helena and Gates of the Mountains: Starting our day just north of Helena, we arrive at Gates of the Mountains. Here, we take a scenic boat tour on the Missouri River. We’ll glide through magnificent country viewing towering walls of limestone. Look for bighorn sheep, mountain goats, osprey, and eagles as we travel through this timeless beauty. We pass through Helena, making our way to West Yellowstone for the evening. We overnight in West Yellowstone.
Day 4 - Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks: This morning, we visit Yellowstone National Park, the favorite stomping ground of Teddy Roosevelt. To many, Yellowstone is a fleeting glimpse of a geyser, a bear, or a canyon, but Yellowstone is much more than that. It’s a collection of scenic features and natural curiosities. “Old Faithful” is the park’s best known attraction, but you’ll see numerous other geysers, fumaroles, hot springs, and mud paint pots, not to mention wild animals, the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, and magnificent Yellowstone Falls. Late this afternoon, we exit Yellowstone and travel through majestic Grand Teton National Park on our way to the valley of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, for a two-night stay.
Day 5 – Jackson Hole: Today is a great day to explore and enjoy the beautiful western town of Jackson, Wyoming.
There is so much to do here! Stroll the western boardwalk to shop and have a meal on your own, relax, or take an optional adventure excursion. Some of the optional excursions include Snake River scenic float trip, horseback riding, ATV tours, and more! After an amazing day in this beautiful town, we sit down this evening to a delicious dinner.
Day 6 – Salt Lake City: This morning, we travel through the town of Afton, where some 3,000 elk horns form the arch across Main Street. We enter the southern tip of Idaho, making a photo stop along the shores of Bear Lake then continue through Logan and Ogden arriving in Salt Lake City. We drive by Temple Square, with its imposing temple and tabernacle. After checking into our hotel, we have a chance to freshen up before enjoying dinner together this evening.
Day 7 - Flight Home: This morning, our motorcoach will transfer us to the airport for our flight home.
Travel Dates: Sunday, July 27, 2025 to Saturday, August 2, 2025
Pricing Per Person (excluding airfare):
Single: $3,299
Double: $2,535
Triple: $2,285
Quad: $2,159
Dinner is included on several nights. If you are interested in joining this unforgettable adventure, please contact Terry Mansfield with Majestic Tours at 281725-1574 for more details.
I look forward to exploring the majestic landscapes of Wyoming with you!
My door is always open, figuratively, and literally.
Stay blessed, Delisle L. Doherty Vice President of Sales and Marketing 832-232-2049 —SPJST—

Welcome New and Transferred Members!
Following the decisions made at the 34th SPJST Convention on June 8, 2024, we’ve updated our membership procedures to streamline the welcoming of new and transferred members into our lodges. According to the revised SPJST By-Laws, local lodges no longer vote to accept or decline new members. Instead, new or transferred members can directly choose their preferred local lodge on their application forms.
The Home Office will provide lodge secretaries with a list of members. We encourage all lodges to extend a warm welcome to these new members by inviting them to meetings, social events, and com-
munity projects. Let’s make a concerted effort to integrate new members into our lodges and make them feel part of our SPJST family right from the start.

State Charitable Raffle Information
Lodges that host fundraisers and raffles during the year . . . please take note of this important information. I urge you to read the Attorney General of Texas’ information that has been prepared about charitable raffles. This link (https://www.texasattorneygeneral.gov/divisions/charitable-trusts/charitable-rafflesand-casinopoker-nights) includes information about “Charitable Raffles and Casino/Poker Nights” from the Office of the Attorney General. Below are excerpts from the website:
The Charitable Raffle Enabling Act (“CREA”) permits “qualified organizations” to hold up to four raffles per calendar year, with certain specified restrictions. The language of the law is very technical, and the two types of raffles have different rules and regulations. If your organization is considering holding a raffle, you should check the statutes to be sure that your raffle qualifies.
HB 2757, effective June 15, 2021, amended the Charitable Raffle Enabling Act to increase the allowable value of each purchased prize from $50,000 to $75,000 and the allowable number of raffles that may be held per calendar year from two to four.
What is a raffle?
CREA defines a raffle as “the award of one or more prizes by chance at a single occasion among a single pool or group of persons who have paid or promised a thing of value for a ticket that represents a chance to win a prize.”
Who may conduct raffles?
Under CREA, only a qualified religious society that has been in existence in Texas for at least 10 years; a qualified volunteer fire department that operates firefighting equipment, provides fire- fighting services and that does not pay its members other than nominal compensation; a qualified volunteer emergency medical service
that does not pay its members other than nominal compensation; or a qualified 501(c) tax-exempt, nonprofit organization that has been in existence for at least three years may hold raffles in Texas. Individuals and for-profit businesses may not hold raffles.
For what may the money raised be used? Under CREA, all proceeds from raffles must be used for the charitable purposes of the organization as defined by CREA 2002.002(1).
Can I advertise and sell tickets on the Internet?
CREA states that the organization may not promote or advertise a raffle statewide, other than on the organization’s website or through a publication or solicitation, including a newsletter, social media, or email, provided only to previously identified supporters of the organization. Selling or offering to sell tickets statewide is prohibited. The term statewide has not been defined or interpreted in any known court proceeding or Attorney General Opinion, but it is generally thought that statewide would include the Internet.
What must be printed on the tickets?
Under CREA, the following five items must be on each ticket:
• The name of the organization conducting the raffle.
• The address of the organization or of a named officer of the organization.
• The ticket price.
• A general description of each prize having a value of more than $10 to be awarded in the raffle.
• The date on which the raffle prize or prizes will be awarded.
Can I give cash prizes?
Under CREA, cash prizes are strictly prohibited. “Money” is defined by CREA as “coins, paper currency, or a negotiable instrument that represents and is readily convertible to coins or paper currency.” See 2002.002(1-a). A certificate of deposit is a prohibited prize. A U.S. savings bond and a pre- paid, or “stored value,” credit card is not prohibited.

The History of West Museum received an early Christmas present on December 18 in the form of two donations totaling over $10,000.
SPJST Lodge 54 representatives presented History of West Museum officials with a check for $10,000 from the lodge prior to the museum’s Christmas party in the museum.
They also presented the museum with another check for $750 from SPJST District Three.
SPJST Lodge 54, West President Freddie Kaluza gave a little background on the lodge and the reason surrounding the donation. SPJST Lodge 54 was organized in 1904, and celebrated 120 years of existence in 2024. The lodge for many years operated out of the SPJST Hall on North Davis Street until it leased the facility to Sokol Gymnastics of West some time in the latter part of the 1980s.
“When the lease with Sokol West expired in 2011, we sold the building to them and the money from the sale went into a special lodge management account at the SPJST Home Office in Temple.
“Now we use the funds in that account for lodge activities, and we donate every year to various organizations.”
“We (SPJST Lodge 54 committee members) want the money to stay in
Lodge 81, Needville gathers for updates, upcoming events

At 1 p.m., President Vincent Newman opened the meeting. He also led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance. All officers answered the roll call except Treasurer Bradley Stavinoha. We didn’t have anyone added to our sick list. Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall read her minutes, and they were approved as read after a minor correction. She also read the treasurer’s report, and it was approved as read.

West because it is the lodge members who have kept the lodge going,” he explained.
He said it was the committee’s feeling that the museum was the right place for this donation. “They (museum) represent the history of West and the Czech culture here, and they only have one fundraiser a year.”
West museum president Nancy Hykel was pleased with the donation.
“SPJST Lodge 54’s donation was a mighty nice and unexpected Christmas surprise. There is no question funds are always needed and appreciated, but this goes beyond that. It shows approval and trust – approval of our dedication to preserve West’s rich history and trust the donated money will be spent wisely.”
“Honestly, words cannot begin to express our true appreciation for this amazing gift.”
She also talked abut the SPJST District Three donation. “From the museum’s very beginning and each year after, SPJST District Three, represented by John Engelke, has supported museum efforts. Time and again, we hear visitors comment how West has one of the best small town museums anywhere, so it boosts our spirits to have the hard work we do, all done by volunteers, recognized by such a large and well-known organization.”

Places and moments hold special places in the heart, so memorialize them with decorative wall hangings. Use a treasured photo or map of destinations you hold dear as the base layer. Next, choose a design, such as a heart or a romantic word like “love.” Print your design then trace it on a piece of foam core or matting. Cut out the design to create an opening and layer it over the photo or map. To finish the project, either affix the top layer to the bottom and display as-is or place it in a pretty frame.
Sucker for succulents.
Hardy and easy to care for, succulents are a stylish way to add some plant life to your home. Add a romantic twist by gathering a selection of small succulents in a variety of colors and textures then clustering them in a heart-shaped basket or planter. Succulents also make great gifts; just create a small planter and attach a card that conveys your heartfelt thoughts.
Love is in the cards.
Almost everyone has a deck or two of old playing cards laying around, or they’re an inexpensive investment. Using the red-hued cards from the heart suite, punch holes in the top of each card. String heart-themed ribbon through the holes to make a whimsical banner you can hang on a wall or across a doorway.
Say it in string. Expressing yourself with string art is an easy project suitable for all ages. Start with a firm backing, such as a scrap of lightweight wood. Add a base coat of paint to make your design pop then sketch your design. Examples like a flower, heart, word or some combination of those are all good choices for a Valentine’s Day project. Add thin nails in 1/2-inch intervals along the border of your design. Select your string and tie an end to the nail of your choice. There’s no right or wrong way from there; just loop from one nail to another until your design is obvious. Tie off your string, trim any excess end pieces and you’re done.
Collage of comrades.
Paying tribute to those you hold near and dear is easy with a stylized cork
board. Select snapshots of loved ones and attach them to a basic corkboard using push pins in classic Valentine’s colors like red, white and pink. Then add accents with tape, stickers, gemstones and other embellishments.

Celebrating Valentine’s Day with heart and creativity
As Valentine’s Day approaches, it’s the perfect time for our youth to express their creativity and caring. This year, we encourage all our young members to get involved in making this day special, not only for friends and family but also for those in our community who might need a little extra cheer.
Valentine’s Day is more than just a time for exchanging cards and candies. It’s an opportunity to spread kindness and joy. Why not craft handmade valentines to distribute at local nursing homes or hospitals? These heartfelt creations can brighten the day of someone who might not otherwise receive a Valentine’s greeting. Moreover, organizing a Valentine’s Day themed party at your next youth meeting could be a fantastic way to celebrate together. Include games, heartshaped snacks, and a card exchange corner where everyone can share a little love. It’s all about making meaningful connections and creating joyful memories that reflect the spirit of giving and kindness inherent in this special day.
Let’s make this Valentine’s Day memorable by giving back, crafting with care, and spreading as much love as we can throughout our community!

Her legacy lives on through her children; grandchildren Josh Bartosh, Jim Bob Bartosh, Jordan Rule, and Devon Rule; great-grandchildren Benjamin Bartosh, Hannah Rule, and Elijah Rule; and sisters Betty Thompson and Carolyn Hitchcock.

In Memory of Darrell McBride
Darrell Eugene McBride departed this earthly realm on January 24, 2024. Visitation was Monday, January 29, 2024, from 3 to 4 p.m. at Boze Mitchell McKibbin Funeral Home Chapel in Waxahachie. Graveside service followed at 4 p.m. at Waxahachie City Cemetery.
He began his life’s journey on July 4, 1960, born to Gloria Jean (Walton) and Samuel Eugene McBride, in Waxahachie, Texas. A graduate of Waxahachie High School, he had a strong work ethic and made his career in maintenance for many years. Many years ago, he served as president of Local 514 Union for several years, during his time at Tyler Refrigeration. Darrell fiercely loved his family; he married his best friend’s sister, Darlene Blevins in 1980, and the couple shared two children – Derek and Levi, two grandchildren – Harley and Maverick, and 44 love filled years together.
As a child, Darrell loved to humorously aggravate his loved ones; he continued this practice throughout his life. Once, he convinced his sister that Styrofoam chips were potato chips until she ate one. Later, as a father, when his youngest son was little, he told his father he did not like ketchup after Darrell had put some ketchup on his plate – Darrell said well, just smell it. When he did, Darrell shoved the plate of ketchup in his face much to his dismay, though Darrell thought it was very funny. He loved humor. His best friend, who is also his brother-in-law, called him “Wiiimp,” while his sister called him “Puuuke” and “Puuukier.”
Darrell enjoyed spending time outdoors playing golf, fishing, hunting, and

camping. He could often be found in front of the television watching football, where he did more yelling than anything. Darrell was a “little bit country, a lot of rock and roll” kind of person. He was a John Wayne fan and liked to watch old westerns. He was always watching some kind of sports, even the old re-runs.
Darrell was a darn good man. He was loved by everyone. Family was everything to him, especially his grandchildren. Dependable, and hard working, Darrell would do anything for his friends and family. He loved life and was an outgoing person until his health got the better of him. He is dearly loved, and will be greatly missed by many.
He was a member of SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis
He was preceded in death by his father, Samuel Eugene McBride, and mother Gloria Jean Otto.
Darrell is survived by his beloved wife, Darlene McBride; sons Derek McBride and Levi McBride and wife Maggie; grandchildren Harley McBride and Maverick McBride; sisters Darla Morgan and husband Brian and Amy Whitaker; stepbrothers James Wayne Otto and Rusty Pecot; stepfather James Otto; stepmother Frances McBride; and many nieces and nephews.
