W
hat an emotional month it has been with all of the events and tragedies (multiple hurricanes and Las Vegas shooting). It’s difficult to keep our chins up knowing that so many people are hurting and suffering. We must continue to pray for our brothers and sisters impacted by these and other situations. But we must also refuse to emotionally succumb to these negative events. We must tap into our mental toughness to do good. We must find our positive energy and turn that into good deeds. When times seem bleak, open up any Věstník issue and see all of the goodness that our members, lodges, and youth do on a continual basis. It’s that goodness that will always prevail to provide hope, strength, and energy to triumph the tough situations. Thanks, members, for your fraternal work and good deeds.

“The Six Keys to Successful Networking” set for Nov. 4 at Lodge 81, Needville
The next sales agents’ training is Saturday, November 4, 2017, at SPJST Lodge 81, Needville, located at 13601 Highway 36 (Violet Street) in Needville. It is “The Six Keys to Successful Networking.” If you are part of chambers, associations, rotary clubs, or business networks, this will be a great opportunity to learn how to work them. We will cover identifying your business partners, how to do your introduction, how to identify the proper networks to
attend, how to work the network, how to do one-on-one appointments to build that partnership for referrals, and how to identify the ROI. It will be in-depth, and we expect the Needville Chamber to attend. This will not only give you the guidance, but also an opportunity to network with other businesses. If you have friends in the business, and you think they may be good SPJST agents, please invite them. An RSVP is needed for all attendees. The class is open to all SPJST sales agents in all districts, and the instructor is Fraternal Field Manager Delisle Doherty. To RSVP, please email Fraternal Field Manager Delisle Doherty at delisled@sbcglobal.net.

Lodge 18, Elgin welcomes visitors
We had three guests at the September meeting: Supreme Lodge Vice President Hiram Dixon and District Two Director Jesse Pospisil and wife Linda. It was great to see you all. Hiram, we are glad that you are on the path of recovery. We didn’t know you had surgery so we are happy to see that you are back at work. We made a donation to the food pantry. With all the displaced people due to the hurricane, it is important to help keep everyone fed. With all the good people trying to help, it’s too bad that some saw a chance to steal from those who lost so much. We are praying for all those who lost so much. October is Czech Heritage Month, and I will bring some Czech books.

Lodge 180, Burleson changes meeting time to 6:15 p.m.
The October monthly meeting was held in the community room of the Burleson Police Department on Tuesday, October 10, 2017. We are so fortunate to be able to utilize this facility to have our meetings, and we sincerely thank them for the usage. Our meeting was brought to order by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to our great Nation followed by a silent prayer for all those in need. It seems that we really have a long list of those needing our prayers as well as prayers for our own. We want to acknowledge prayers for all who have been involved in the floods across the southern part of Texas as well as the other areas. Prayers also for all who were involved in the Las Vegas shootings and all of their loved ones. We are also remembering all of our own families, friends, and loved ones that have been ill or taken away from us. Following our prayers, minutes and financial reports were given, which were approved as read. All officers were present. New correspondence was addressed, and President Nancy Kelly indicated that a donation of $100 had been sent to the Czech Heritage Museum in Temple in memory of Clement “Clem” John Sulak, brother of Estelle Hurtik and

uncle of Joe Hurtik and wife Rhonda Hurtik and family. Election of officers for the 2018 year was held with all officers being voted into the new year by acclamation. Some new ideas have been implemented by the lodge, which were brought forth by Secretary Carmon Babina and accepted with enthusiasm. Different charities have been selected by the members and have gone into a basket. Each month, a charity will be chosen and a $100 donation will be sent to that given charity from the person that made the draw and the lodge. What a unique way to have an extra part in the contributions. This month, the chosen charity was Wounded Warriors, which will be from youth member Logan Almonte and the lodge. Well done! Rather than utilizing time to decide where we will dine after a lodge meeting, Carmon suggested that we put the names of different restaurants in the Burleson area in a basket to be drawn. We dined at Spring Creek last evening for delicious barbecue, and we made the draw for the November meeting as well, which was Mexican Inn. Lodge 180 members can come up with super ideas and how to implement them to make our meetings more enjoyable. Great job! We are always looking for additional ideas and suggestions.
Meeting Time Change: First Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. It was also brought forth that the time of the lodge meeting was a little difficult for some of the members who get off work at 5 p.m. then have to fight traffic to make it to Burleson by 6 p.m. It was
voted on that we will try a new meeting time of 6:15 p.m. We will continue to meet on the first Tuesday of each month, but please make a note of the new time change—first Tuesday of each month at 6:15 p.m. We had a delicious birthday cake of white chocolate with raspberry filling to help celebrate Dena Bowden’s birthday. We wish you many more in your future. Other October birthday celebrants are Aletha Hicks, Frances Pratt, John Jimenez, Paul Hurtik, Tisha Sulak, Jon Wheat, Martin Dalby, Jennifer Cooper, Estelle Hurtik, Johnny Sulak, Yoland Jo Jimenez, Benton Lamson, Derek Doutlick, Sara Cox, Mitchell, Kucera, Carol Hilcher, Kaylee Hurtik, Patricia Jimenez, Leo Sulak, Jr., and Rachel Thomas. We will be having our annual Christmas dinner at Villa Diana in Burleson on Saturday, December 2. Further information will be sent later regarding the Christmas party. Happy Birthday, Sharon of Lodge 202 Jourdanton!
SPJST Lodge 191, Lufkin has been having a good crowd at the regular third Friday night dances. Thank all of you for coming to them and for inviting your friends to come also. The lodge is a good place to come and relax, dance, and fellowship with your friends and other dancers.
Next Dance—October 20 The next dance will be October 20 with Glenn Lenderman and Friends. Glenn always has someone playing and singing with him. His beautiful wife Cricket sings with him sometimes; Chris Powell is the drummer; Kevin Carter sometimes plays the fiddle and sings; and George Scogin plays his saxophone. Why spend the night at home in front of the television when you could be out dancing, which is good exercise! Where else could you go for the price, have a good time, exercise, and fellowship with other people? You might even make some lifelong friends. There is always food so please bring a covered dish or snack for the table. The food is always wonderful! Nathan Ham and the Country Boys played for the last dance, and as always, they put on a good show. If you were not there, you missed a good dance. On the sick list – Wilda Kay had heart surgery in Dallas last month and is doing great. Roy Luce went for a checkup in Houston and is doing okay, Joel Towers fell and broke his collar bone and a few ribs. This old age is not fun! Also, Doyle and Sarah Oliver went to Colorado to attend their grandson’s wedding, and Doyle had a light heart attack. He spent three days in the hospital in Colorado Springs, and he is back to his old self again. Our deepest sympathy goes out to Doyle and Sarah Oliver for the loss of Doyle’s mother, Mrs. Irene Oliver. She lived a good, long life, and for the past 21 years, they had been taking care of her. Please be in prayer for all of these and their families.

Lodge 202, Jourdanton met Sunday, October 1, 2017, at Jourdanton Community Center. Kelly House and Katlyn Polasek led the Pledge of Allegiance. Silence was observed for deceased members, and in honor of the armed forces. Vice President Sharon La Grange welcomed everyone. Secretary Bettie House read the minutes that were approved as read. It has now been a little over a month since our brothers and sisters of Texas were slammed by Hurricane Harvey along the Texas coast. Our hearts still go out to those who experienced so much devastation. The losses are heartbreaking and unbelievable. While there is not much we can offer except our thoughts and prayers, we did decide to send proceeds from several of our fundraising activities to the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. Hopefully, it will be of help for someone in need. The September meeting rolled along as usual with the Pledge of Allegiance (all standing with hands over hearts) and the business portion with the reading of the minutes and financials. Sunshine Chair Marlene Bass gave an update on Hermina Cihacek (who was missing last month) and her location. She is currently at home receiving physical therapy treatment. Joyce Tesar had also been under the weather recently, but was present for the meeting, and Patti Williams is currently in the hospital. Get well cards were sent to each of them. Several other items of note were that longtime member Lois Smith had experienced a stroke a few days prior to the meeting, and Estelle Hurtik lost her brother. Margaret Laymance announced that former member Mildred Kidwell also passed away.
Other Business Topics We’ve been collecting school supplies for a local elementary for several months, and they were delivered by Janet Basham in September. While at the school, a staff member asked if we could also maybe donate underclothing for the children. Janet took it upon herself to go buy supplies for that need, and we were happy to learn she took care of

the situation for them and for us. Thank you, Janet, for your service. It was determined that we would be “spooks, witches, or pumpkins” for the October meeting. In November, we will have a craft sale. September birthday “babes” were honored and serenaded. Hostesses were thanked. Lydia Alholm took the floor for another one of her interesting “stories.” Door prizes were presented to six lucky winners. As you can see, a lot of topics were covered - all of which I will not go into details about. I’ve already taken up too much space in the Věstník! that no one got “100” on it because no one claimed the prize. The prize was washing dishes in the kitchen after lunch. No wonder! Vice President Janet led the blessing for lunch, and Ray Terrell played the banjo while lunch was being served. Bingo followed lunch, and it was another great meeting with - as always - a lot of love, laughter, and silliness. Respectfully submitted, Joan Simek Shropshire Secretary —SPJST—

it takes a lot of practice to get it where you want it. Some of those that have done this for several years — I can see a lot of improvement. I can see that they know what to do,” Faust said. The interest in kolache baking by the younger generation is growing, Sebesta said. “This year, there are siblings here from some of the older ones who have been coming. And, there are some young mothers who are interested to learn and for their kids to learn,” Sebesta said. helping the younger batch of bakers. Sebesta said that baked foods using yeast is a skill. Orsak added, “You don’t realize the process from the beginning to the end until you see it.” Lode 9, Snook Youth Leader Loree Lewis said the workshop used to be held in the school’s homemaking room with only four ovens, so the day went “long into the evening. Now, we use the elementary cafeteria which is much faster.” 2016-2017 State King Colby See was a student at this year’s workshop, and has been attending for several years. He feels that events such as this workshop is important. He said, “We get to learn more about our culture and how to bake kolaches — and it’s fun.” Sierra Sebesta said, “Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve been coming.” “You’re going to end up forgetting
something after this, but if you make it again, then you will start to remember more each year,” Sebesta said. This year, there was even a grandmother at the workshop wanting her grandson to learn the art, but also wanting to learn herself. Barbara Giesenschlag brought her grandson Logan to the workshop. She said, “To me, the major thing about the kolache is the dough. I have tried following recipes, and I have learned this morning about putting the air in the dough — there’s a way to mix it to get that dough where it’s a lighter type of bread.” “That’s why I came to learn — because there are tricks to the trade that are not in recipe books,” Giesenschlag said. Sebesta said that baking kolaches is “a labor of love.” And, this year’s labor of love had the kolaches from the workshop donated to hurricane relief workers. In normal years, the kolaches made at the workshop are donated to the Snook Volunteer Fire Department to sell at the annual department’s barbecue fundraiser. However, this was not a normal year. Lodge 9 Assistant Youth Leader Laura Sebesta said she was going to deliver the kolaches to the relief coordinator in Tivoli, and the coordinator would distribute them as well as other donated items collected at the school among Tivoli, Seadrift, and other neighboring areas affected by Hurricane Harvey. Laura Sebesta said that that area has no power and may be without power for 30 more days. “They can’t cook or bake anything unless they use a grill or propane, so this will be welcome,” she said. “The coordinator was excited that we would be sending something fresh from an oven.” See said, “It’s more special this time because it’s going to people who are helping down on the coast and to the people at the shelters.” Sebesta agreed that “it feels good to help other people. The kolaches are going to evacuees and those helping.” First-time attendee Jewel Jarrett said, “I didn’t want to do it at first, but it

ended up being fun . . . and work . . . but it’s worth it.” Orsak said, “We enjoy passing down tradition, and this workshop is one tradition that has evolved.” She said the workshop is “a day full of fun, a day full of work, and a day full of learning.” Orsak said that Snook continues to do the workshop to give to the local community. And, in turn, this year, the workshop is giving to the Texas community. —SPJST—

Texas Czech Genealogical Society presents 2017 Christmas Ornaments ~Legends, Symbols and Traditions~
For the third year in a row, because of overwhelming response to our previous ornaments, Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) is pleased to announce that we will again offer a collection of Christmas ornaments for sale that are associated with interesting, thought-provoking legends, symbols, or traditions. We are pleased to feature four ornaments this week that are symbols associated with the Christmas season. The entire collection of ornaments may be seen and purchased at the TCGS gift shop in the lower level of the SPJST Home Office at 520 North Main Street in Temple, Texas, or may be ordered for shipment by contacting Nancy Machu at nbmachu@aol.com or Leslie Nelson at TCGStexas@gmail.com. Or, send a check, payable to TCGS, for the ornament amount, plus shipping/handling charges to Nancy Machu, 11 Stillmeadow, Round Rock, Texas 78664.
Shipping/Handling 1 to 4 ornaments - add $9 5 to 9 ornaments - add $13 10 to 14 ornaments - add $19
Shipments will be made after October 25.
Symbol of the Peanut (#SL-6 - $7) The peanut is symbolic of the mystery and anticipation of the Christmas season. In years past, families often gathered to make handmade decorations using peanuts and other nuts to adorn the
Christmas tree. Just as a peanut’s shell is opened to discover a hidden nut inside, the Christmas season unfolds with many wonderful surprises.
Symbol of the Eagle (#SL-8 - $10) The eagle is a majestic symbol of power, honor, strength, and wisdom and is able to bear much weight. Eagles represent sovereignty and supremacy. Positioned in the sky as the constellation Aquilla, this heavenly eagle faces east towards the sun, in essence showing us courage for meeting each new day. The eagle became a national emblem in 1782 when the Great Seal of the United States was adopted, and it has come to represent freedom and bravery to Americans everywhere.
Symbol of the Butterfly (#SL-28 - $13) Butterflies are deep and powerful representations of life. Many cultures associate the butterfly with our souls. The Christian religion sees the butterfly as a symbol of resurrection and eternal life. The butterfly, emerging from its cocoon represents the resurrection of Christ from the tomb. Around the world, people view the butterfly as representing endurance, change, hope, and life. Just as the butterfly comes
forth with a new body, those who trust in Christ come forth with a new life. The butterfly also represents flight, freedom, and creative thinking. A symbol of spring, the butterfly truly reflects the beauty of nature.
Symbol of Lion and Lamb (SL-18 - $10) The characteristics of the lion and the lamb form a vivid contrast of expectations when used metaphorically. Christian beliefs attribute the qualities of both the powerful lion, known for its strength and ferocity, and the lamb, regarded as a gentle and dependent creature, to Jesus Christ the Son of God. The depiction of a lion lying down with a lamb symbolizes peace and harmony. The Bible tells us that when Jesus returns to Earth, all who are enemies will live together in harmony, even the animals. The powerful lion will lie down with the gentle lamb, and love and peace will reign. Embodied within Christ are the lion’s majesty and might, as well as the lamb’s innocence and gentleness. Love the complete Christ, both lion and lamb, and rejoice that He is King! This ornament includes an inspiring explanation of the symbol of the lion and the lamb on the reverse side. Czech Harvest Festival Dožínky
The harvest is a very important aspect of life in farming communities. A farmer’s entire livelihood is based on a good harvest. After the harvest has been completed, farm workers make wreaths of rye, wild flowers, straw, or ears of wheat that symbolize the circle of life. The women offer the wreath to the guest of honor - the landowner, a local noble, the richest farmer in the village or – in modern times – the vogt or other representative of the authorities. Then they all join in a dance and feast. The wreath of the owner is placed in an honorable place until the next harvest.
