INTEREST RATES

As we approach November and Thanksgiving, I am reminded of the importance of gratitude—not just in the big moments but in the day-to-day efforts that so often go unnoticed. In our SPJST family, we ask much of our members, lodges, and volunteers. Whether it’s organizing events, donating time, or supporting a worthy cause, the collective spirit of giving is truly what makes our organization so special.

It’s easy to focus on the tasks at hand and the outcomes we want to achieve, but it’s equally important to pause and acknowledge those who help us along the way. A simple “thank you” can go a long way, and while we may not always receive it ourselves, that should never stop us from extending it to others.

I want to take this moment to thank each and every one of you—our members, our lodges, our staff, and our leaders—for the time, energy, and heart you put into supporting SPJST. Your dedication to our organization, whether through large-scale efforts or quiet contributions behind the scenes, does not go unnoticed. Without your tireless commitment, many of our programs and initiatives simply wouldn’t happen.

Personally, I’ve reflected on how easy it is to overlook the efforts of those who go above and beyond. Like many of you, my team and I often find ourselves tackling projects outside of our regular duties, such as managing administrative tasks when unexpected changes occur or organiz-

A Heartfelt Thank You

ing the many details of our SPJST Convention. We certainly don’t do it for recognition, but a little acknowledgment can make a world of difference in motivating us all to continue giving our best.

With that in mind, I hope we can all take the time this season to truly thank those around us. Let’s recognize the small acts of kindness as well as the big contributions, and let’s remember that gratitude doesn’t just uplift the receiver—it inspires the giver, too.

Wishing you all a wonderful November and Thanksgiving season, filled with gratitude and the warmth of family and friends.

Scholarship recipient expresses appreciation

Dear SPJST,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your generosity in selecting me as a recipient of an SPJST Scholarship. I am very honored to be the recipient of this award.

This summer, I was busy being a chaperone at SPJST summer youth camp, and I worked full time as an apprentice with Dailey Co. on the plumbing side of its business. I am choosing to go to Texas State Technical College (TSTC) because I am a hands-on learner. Growing up, my dream was to attend Texas A&M University; but as I became a teenager, nothing seemed to appeal to me in a four-year college setting. I had no clue what degree area even piqued my interest. During my junior year, I attended a college/career fair, and that is when I met a recruiter from TSTC, and I felt such at ease. Getting a degree or license in a trade was my true calling and where I needed to be.

For over 30 years, our society has pushed high school students to pursue a four-year college degree. We are now in a society where baby boomers, once tradesmen, are retiring. The need is great for people to perform trade work and services. In June, I met with my advisor at TSTC where I set my fall schedule to begin my education in plumbing and pipe-fitting technology. Upon graduation, I would like to pursue a career as a plumber or work as an apprentice with a water well drilling company. My end goal is to one day become a licensed water well driller and own my own business. I have persistence and a passion to do for and help others. For 14 years, I have been busy, not only trying to improve myself, but also the lives of others. By furthering my education in a trade, I hope to one day become licensed and help society by providing necessary services to everyday lives. I aim to make a difference in my community, and this scholarship will absolutely help make a difference when it comes to affording the education I need to do that. Again, I thank you for your confidence to help me achieve my educational goals and dreams.

Sincerely, Justin B. Hruska, II Lodge 9, Snook —SPJST—

Commentary

Officers, Directors, Jim Therrell, and Al Burns:

Thank you for a very successful meeting. We were able to cover so many things and take action on some to move SPJST into the 21st century. We were able to have tremendous discussion and debate and in the end, we accomplished our efforts to make SPJST a better organization. We need to be grateful for the efforts taken and made.

In closing, I want to leave everyone with some thoughts, which I feel will make us even more successful.

Work together as a team.

Share your thoughts and ideas with the team. Always cooperate with fellow officers/directors.

Respect each other.

Before sending any critical information to our members, please share this with your fellow officers to make sure something was not overlooked.

Accept constructive criticism and do not ever take it personal.

When being a leader of a group, make sure you are prepared before the opportunity to do so. If you aren’t, ask for help.

Be confident and believe in yourself.

Be prepared. Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.

Remember, we serve our members, but also must make decisions which always has to be in the best interest for SPJST even if someone may disagree. We are not here to win a popularity contest.

Thank you to all SPJST staff, officers, and directors for a great followup meeting to the SPJST Convention. Through the hard work of all involved, we were able to accomplish the changes discussed in previous meetings.

We will not be able to accomplish great things with SPJST if we do not continue to discuss and work towards protecting our members from changes that will be coming as our country sees changing economic times in the future.

I would like to thank our delegates for due process at the convention and listening to discussion before making their final decisions. I do ask that all of our delegates be better prepared for our next convention by reading information beforehand and asking questions of those proposing new ideas.

Please continue to support your lodges and others throughout the state of Texas. Yes, you are a member of one lodge, but moreover, you are SPJST across the state. Please continue to support all SPJST stands for.

We had a very good meeting. I wound like to thank the Board of Directors, the officers, and Home Office staff for their hard work and dedication. I would also like to thank the members of SPJST; without them, we would not be here. It does not take one person to make SPJST, but it takes all of us working together for the better of SPJST. Congratulations to Brad Teplicek for being elected as alternate District Four director and Governance Committee in District Four. I would like to thank all the delegates that attended our convention, all the lodges for their hard work and dedication, especially the lodges in District Four for their support and dedication, and the sales agents that are out there on a daily basis working to make SPJST a stronger society. Without all of you, we would not be here.

Our youth are our future, and it’s important to embrace them and show that SPJST cares. We should teach them the values of fraternalism and demonstrate how to give back to their communities. Let’s engage with them through projects that interest them and bring us together as one. It’s time to re-ignite the excitement that older members fondly remember. While times may have changed, the spirit of community service remains the same—helping a neighbor, a senior citizen, a friend, or anyone in need.

I was sitting in a restaurant watching a mother digging through her purse seeing how much money she had to pay for their meal. A gentlemen motioned for the waiter to come over and told him to bring their ticket to him. When the waiter went over to her and told her their meal has been paid for as he walked away, she started to cry.

I was at Discount Tire waiting on tires to be put on my car. A young lady came in and asked what was the cheapest tire they had. They told her, and she sat down trying to figure how she could get the money to pay for it. A couple of guys counted out the money and told her not to worry - they were going to pay for the tire. She could not believe it. I heard her ask what does she have to do for them paying for her tire. One said - all you have to do is help someone else when you can.

This is what our communities, counties, states, and country are missing. We have forgotten our purpose. Not saying SPJST doesn’t do good things. We do, but the little things can make a big difference. We need to let people know we sell insurance, too. Ask your friends if they have insurance. Let them know they need to talk to one of the agents. Let them know it’s to help the families if something would happen to them. It’s a small price to pay to help your families. Together, we can make SPJST one of the best fraternal societies in the country . . . by working together.

Dear SPJST Members,

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all those who took the time and effort to attend the convention in Temple. Your dedication to SPJST is truly commendable, and because of your participation, we accomplished a great deal. It was wonderful to see everyone networking, making new friends, and reconnecting with old acquaintances. The spirit of fraternalism and benevolence was palpable throughout the event.

A special thanks goes out to Lodge 88, Houston members for making the Saturday evening patriotic event unforgettable. The costumes were spectacular and added a special touch to the occasion.

In our recent quarterly report, we faced a minor setback with the master death list being released, leading to a significant influx of death claims. Ho-

wever, our last board meeting was highly informative and emphasized what is working well and what needs improvement to ensure SPJST’s success. Our Executive Committee members’ passion for SPJST led to some very lively discussions.

We are diligently working on a plan to implement the District Council and its role in spring gatherings. Additionally, we are assessing how to effectively manage and utilize large donations that lodges may wish to make.

I highly recommend the book Toxic Charity to everyone especially those in leadership positions or involved in charitable activities. It offers profound insights into the impact of giving:

Give once: you elicit appreciation. Give twice: you create anticipation. Give three times: you create expectation. Give four times: it becomes entitlement. Give five times: you establish dependency. Stop giving: you become the enemy.

Let’s continue to work together to make SPJST a thriving and supportive community.

Congratulations to all the directors being reelected for another term. The passion and dedication to SPJST by the directors is evident in every discussion and decision. With the 34th SPJST Convention completed, we are focused on moving forward with the directives of the delegation. Thank you to our officers and staff for their determination and dedication through the recovery from the May 22 tornado that went through the area. Even though they had personal damage, they took care of business for SPJST.

Directors vote to proceed with sale of camp

For 16 years – from 2009 through 2024 – SPJST summer campers, Leaders-in-Training, youth leaders, district youth counselors, chaperones, and many others have enjoyed sharing summer fun and learning life lessons at Camp Kubena, formerly the SPJST Education and Nature Center. During this time, the camp program has cultivated a culture that built friendships, confidence, and self-esteem through one small success after another. These positive impacts of camp will last a lifetime.

Despite these accolades and after considerable evaluation and deliberation, the SPJST Board of Directors has made the decision to list the property for sale. “It was a thoroughly considered and thoughtful decision,” says SPJST Board Chair and District Three Director John Engelke.

Since SPJST purchased the camp property from the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) in 2016, the Society has invested considerable time and money into making the property an inviting place for camping and retreat experience. “From the outset, the financial and operational challenges associated with the maintenance and management of a year-round education and nature facility have been formidable,” says SPJST President/CEO Brian Vanicek. “Even so, the decision to sell the camp was tough. The memories that were made at Camp Kubena and before that the SPJST Education and Nature Center are priceless.”

From 2009 through 2016, the camp property was under the supervision of SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC), a 501(c)3 organization established by the 2000 SPJST Convention which had been leasing the camp property from LCRA. SPJST contributed $538,545.64 to the ENC from 2011 through 2015 to keep the ENC financially solvent. Financial necessity mandated that SPJST establish possession and oversight of the property in 2016, a move which eventually led to the Society’s purchase of the

property

182-acre camp tract from LCRA. SPJST’s acquisition costs and capital improvements – for the camp project between 2016 and 2024 were $3,777,309.71. SPJST’s net expenses – excluding capital improvements –for the camp project between 2016 and year-to-date 2024 were: $1,542,734.06. Collectively, they represent an expenditure of $5,858,589.41.

“Keep in mind that these figures do not include any of the annual camp allocations made by the Society for campers, chaperones, and adult leaders to attend camp between 2009 and 2024,” says Chair Engelke.

“While camp will be in a new location next year, the spirit of fun, friendship, and new learning experiences will still be there,” says President/CEO Vanicek. “It will be an opportunity for us to embrace fresh opportunities, create lasting memories, and continue our journey of personal development and discovery.”

“The Board and management care deeply about the legacy of joy and celebration that has been created at Camp Kubena and remain committed to ensuring that the summer camp experience remains a cornerstone of the SPJST Youth Program,” says Chair Engelke. Vice President of Communications Melanie Zavodny and State Fraternal Director Frank Horak are exploring options for summer fun and adventure in 2025. They anticipate announcing their final selection to youth leaders, district youth counselors, and the greater membership within the next couple of weeks.

Republic Ranches, an elite farm, ranch, and rural properties brokerage firm is being contracted to handle the marketing and sale of the property.

Republic Ranches has a presence in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Colorado, Arkansas, and Louisiana, along with a partnership with Fay Ranches, who serves the Rocky Mountain West and Southeast.

It’s Your Life

“I Didn’t Know”

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to explain to someone that we couldn’t help them because their paperwork wasn’t filled out correctly. And I can’t tell you how often I hear the response, “I didn’t know.” It’s tough to deliver that news, and even harder to hear their reaction. What am I talking about?

I’m talking about end-of-life paperwork: POAs (Powers of Attorney), wills, trusts, and estate issues. In today’s do-ityourself world, it’s easy to think we don’t need lawyers—why pay for one when you can do it yourself online? But what may seem like a cost-saving decision today can become an expensive problem tomorrow

if things aren’t done right. It reminds me of the old Fram Oil Filter commercials: “You can pay me now, or pay me later.” The message was clear—pay $5 for an oil filter now or face a $2,500 bill to rebuild the engine later.

When it comes to legal paperwork, it’s better to pay a little more upfront than to face a bigger issue down the road when you’re trying to get your affairs in order. POAs are a common issue. There are many intricacies and details that need to be addressed. For instance, if there’s a life insurance policy, you may need an addendum that allows you to change beneficiaries—something not included in a basic POA. The same applies to wills—if they’re not done correctly, they can be challenged and tied up in court for months,

even years. Trusts and estate matters are no different. The time to find out you’ve done something wrong isn’t when you need to use these documents.

This is an area where you don’t want to cut corners. That’s why SPJST partnered with an attorney to create an educational website for our members (vincentlawestateplanning.com). It includes helpful videos on trusts, probate, POAs, wills, and estate planning. Are you taking advantage of it? Courtney Vincent, the attorney, also offers a free consultation for SPJST members. If you don’t have a lawyer, I encourage you to take advantage of Courtney’s service.

November updates Member Engagement News

2025 SPJST Summer Camp: Important Announcement

On Thursday, October 17, I shared an important update via email with all lodge officers from President/CEO Brian Vanicek regarding the pending sale of Camp Kubena. President/CEO Vanicek’s full article appears on page 8 of this week’s Vestnik.

As we move forward, I want to assure you that I have been working diligently to find a new location for our SPJST youth camp in 2025. After an exhaustive search of 23 potential sites, I am pleased to announce that we have identified a wonderful alternative in Comfort, Texas, located on the beautiful Guadalupe River. Our camp will be held Sunday, June 8 through Wednesday, June 11. We are currently in discussions with the camp’s director and team to finalize the details and are grateful that this facility is able to accommodate our group.

Melanie and I recently visited the camp and explored the activities available for our campers. The camp offers a zipline, swing, climbing wall, large swimming pool, pavilion, pickleball courts, archery, gaga pit, fishing, drama, rocketry, canoeing, field games, and much more. Many of our beloved traditions – like the camp dance, SPJST football, OMC (Organized Mass Chaos) – will also continue.

We will keep you updated regularly as we finalize plans for the 2025 SPJST camp. Thank you for your support and understanding as we embark on this exciting new chapter. Our goal is to create a fun and memorable camp experience for our youth in 2025.

Lodge 84, Dallas members attend Czech & Slovak Heritage Day ✦ October 13, 2024 ✦ Sokol Dallas

What a great day to celebrate Czech/Slovak Heritage Day 2024 at Sokol Dallas!

My granddaughter, Alina Mae Patselov, looks forward to this celebration each year, to wear my costume when I was her age, to learning all the dancing the Czech way (lol)!

Alina’s other Grandmother and her

twin sister, Karina and Marina, just could not get over how much fun Alina enjoyed the day . . . much less to watch Alina’s daddy, Andrey Patselov, win the beer stein holding contest. He is the one in the black Czech vest.

I actually did have time to run upstairs from cooking to dance with my family - Jamie, Andrey, and Alina. One

thing is the best for Alina is to be with Kendall Tucker who loves being with her cousin especially at Sokol dancing. Her Teta Vicki Sims always has a fun time with Alina and loves giving her the biggest hugs! To top off the day, I won the 50/50 drawing, yes, me! Now it’s back to the planning committee to see how we can make 2025 bigger and

better! So mark your calendar now for October 2025 for a bigger and more fun day at the Czech/Slovak Heritage Day at Sokol Dallas.

See you then!

Fraternally,

Lynda Novak, Vice President —SPJST—

thanks for her coming and talking to us. Also under new business, Youth Leader Kristen Jones announced that they had 30 people show up for the Splashway event. She also mentioned that Operation Santa is coming up and the youth are making prayer beads for the cancer center in Sugar Land.

Under new business, Bradley Stavinoha told everyone about the Czech Fest held at Lodge 88, Houston.

Jeanette Newman announced that next month, we will elect officers.

Lastly, Shirley Myers asked if the lodge would donate a gift card for the Czech Heritage Soup Tasting Supper in January. Motion was passed and approved to donate a gift card.

Prizes were won by Pam Labay, Clarence Myers, Willie Mae Kuykendall, and Joyce Lamensky. Congratulations to our lucky winners!

Lodge 180, Burleson delivers joy and hope to local organizations

Members of Lodge 180, Burleson met in Burleson, Texas, at the bank to take care of some business. Then, members delivered monetary donations to local organizations. Members visited the Burleson Police Department, Burleson Animal Shelter, Heart for Kids, and Harvest House to deliver donation checks.

The Burleson Police Department uses the donation for their Youth Explorer’s Program, and Harvest House uses the donation for their food pantry. Heart for Kids helps to supply students in the Burleson school district with school supplies. They helped around 600 students with supplies last year, and even more were in need this year.

The Burleson Animal Shelter is always in need of help.

Lodge 180 members also donated used towels and blankets for the animals. The caring shelter staff gave us calendars they had made with pictures of many of their pets that have been adopted. And, we always enjoy Clyde, their huge resident dog! He gives everyone that walks in the door a big welcome. Members of Lodge 180 are so happy that we can offer some help to all these wonderful organizations.

After a busy morning, we enjoyed lunch at Black Bear in Burleson. Our group always has the best time together! Rhonda Hurtik

Lodge 88, Houston plans Nov. 2 campout

If you haven’t done the Lodge Campout before, it’s pretty awesome and is arguably one of the most underrated events of the year.

This is a no-frills affair where you pretend like you are camping out in the wilderness but don’t have all of that annoying driving; there is a bar; and there will be a movie on the projector for the kiddos. Bring your tent, sleeping bags, and all the usual stuff you’d go camping with.

Spending the night isn’t required but is always pretty awesome. We’ll have hot dogs ($5) and hamburgers ($10) for purchase, with food service starting at 5:30 p.m. We’ll also have all the requisite supplies for campfire s’mores around dusk (Parental supervision required!). Please RSVP for headcount and planning purposes using this link: https://www.lodge88.org/products/camp out2024 .

For those who haven’t attended in the past, here are a few pointers:

- Keep your preferred bedtime in mind when choosing where to set up your tent, as it tends to be a bit more lively, longer, near the building and beer garden.

- We’ll have hot dogs and burgers for purchase at 5:30 p.m. (Please RSVP for planning) and s’mores around dusk.

- We have firewood and fire rings, so don’t worry about that – but, please, do watch your children!

- Bathrooms will be open and available throughout the night.

- Somehow, coffee and donuts/kolaches tend to magically appear on Sunday morning.

Hope you can make it! Members and guests are welcome. The campout is free of charge (but the food and beer are not), and we get an hour to stay up longer once the kids fade with daylight savings!

The minutes from the September meeting were also read and approved without revisions. Treasurer Korus presented the financial statements for August and September,

Oscar repaired the burner on the stove, and the stage trim needs to be reordered due to an incorrect size being received. Roxy also mentioned difficulties in sourcing the correct-sized trash bags for the hall’s trash cans.

Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club enoys August swim social

The 2024 Czechfest at Lodge 88, Houston was very exciting and fun.

On Saturday, October 12, 2024, I dressed up in my Czech costume and greeted people. Many pictures were taken with lovely girls who would consider me a princess. I assisted in the kitchen making a delicious meal that included pork, Czech dumplings, sauerkraut, gravy, and peaches. I want to thank the kitchen crew for doing an amazing job preparing the meals for everyone.

I went inside the Chandelier Ballroom and volunteered at the youth booth selling desserts, bracelets, slime, headpieces, balloon animals, cards, and charms for the beer steins and kids’ mugs. Thank you to Youth Leader Sarah and the youth group for making it possible to run the booth.

At the gazebo, live music was playing from the Chris Rybak band. I did the Grand March with my brother, Evan Pflughaupt, and it isn’t a true Czech party without “The Seven Step Polka.”

I took a break from dancing and escorted Orel, the SPJST mascot, around the ballroom and outside with my brother. I had a lot of fun, and so did many other people.

Thank you to everyone who contributed and volunteered to make this day special to our heritage.

God bless, Megan Pflughaupt 2024-2025 Miss SPJST Lodge 88, Houston —SPJST—

In Memory of Jerry Dressler, Jr.

Jerome “Jerry” Charles Dressler, Jr. was born in Houston, Texas on March 11, 1944. He passed peacefully to his heavenly home on Saturday, October 19, 2024, with his wife and three children by his side in Dripping Springs.

A celebration of life for Jerry will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 9 at Harrell Funeral of Austin, 4435 Frontier Trail in Austin, Texas. A reception with the family will follow the service.

A beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Jerry enjoyed life and loved people. He was outgoing, always inquisitive, and never hesitated to give you his advice/opinion (as most who knew him can attest).

Jerry was raised in East Houston where he formed lifelong friendships playing baseball, basketball, and football in the Denver Harbor neighborhood. Jerry spent weekends and summers at Matagorda Bay where the family enjoyed fishing, boating, skiing, and having fun in the sun.

After graduating from Austin High School in 1963, Jerry attended Lamar State College of Technology in Beaumont, earning a mechanical engineering degree in 1968. Soon after his graduation, he was drafted and served two years in the U.S. Army.

Jerry married Barbara Jean Keeling in 1969 while in the Army. When he completed his military service, he returned to the Houston area as a proud Army Veteran and accepted an engineering position with Armco Steel. In 1975, he began a job with Ethyl Corporation in Pasadena, which later became Albemarle Corporation. His education laid the groundwork for a successful career as an engineer, where he was not only respected for his expertise but also beloved for his camaraderie and support of his colleagues. He worked at Albemarle for over 25 years until his retirement.

Jerry had many fulfilling interests in

his life including coaching his kids’ sports teams, duck hunting with his dad, bird hunting, deer hunting, collecting coins, biking, and running – including completing a duathlon as well as six marathons.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Jerry was an active member and officer of SPJST Lodge 172, Pasadena for more than 50 years, where he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement award in 2010.

Jerry and Barbara moved to Dripping Springs in 2017, where he maintained their home and property with the meticulous eyes of an engineer. He spent most of his remaining days working outside, pruning trees, and fixing everything from toys to tractors. He had a keen interest in living a healthy lifestyle and did so until his sudden and unexpected diagnosis with terminal Glioblastoma Brain Cancer in January 2024, which he faced courageously day after day, with perseverance, determination, and optimism.

Jerry was preceded in death by parents Jerome “Jake” Charles and Victoria “Vicki” Theresa Dressler.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 55 years, Barbara; their children, Skyla Badger and son-in-law Deme of Dripping Springs, Stacy Dressler of League City, and Jeremy Dressler and daughterin-law Andrea of Mansfield. His greatest joy was being “Pops” to grandchildren Shelby, Ainsley, and Wyatt Badger, Logan and Gracelyn Bode, and Emery Dressler. Jerry is also survived by sister Bebe Hicks and brother-in-law Jerry of Deer Park; brother Dennis and sister-in-law Mylene Dressler of Hawi, Hawaii; and brother Gary and sister-in-law Hidemi Dressler of Del Rey Oaks, California.

Jerry finished his final race victoriously, and his memory will be cherished forever by his family, friends, and all who were honored to know him.

In Memory of Louise Jacob

Louise Laura (Fuchs) Jacob, 99, passed away with her daughters by her side in the very early hours of Tuesday, October 8, 2024, following a very brief hospitalization. She was able to spend her final day with her devoted family either in person or by telephone. She was very aware of each hug given and every message of love whispered in her ear. Thankfully, she was alert to hear some of her favorite songs from an impromptu choir in her hospital room and the many prayers offered for her before joining her beloved husband in Heaven. Her passing was peaceful, gentle, and made with the same grace with which she lived. What a beautiful and incredible gift she was to all.

Louise was born on May 30, 1925, near Burton, Texas, to Robert Albert and Martha Louise (Jaroszewski) Fuchs. She grew up on her family’s farm in Burton with her parents and six siblings. She and her family attended St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church in Burton and that was where she was baptized on August 16, 1925, and confirmed on March 17, 1940.

Louise graduated as valedictorian of Burton High School in 1942, attended Blinn College for a year, and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa. She lived and worked in Austin and San Antonio for a short time as a secretary.

But the real story of Louise’s life began when she met Kervin E. “Jake” Jacob at a community dance. The story goes that she caught his attention by winking at him with her baby blue eyes – it worked! Louise and Jake were married on December 3, 1944, at St. John’s Church in Burton. They very happily danced through the next 55-plus years together until his death in 2000.

Following Jake’s discharge from the Army, they moved to the big city of Houston and in 1946, founded their business, “Jake’s Egg Co,” in the backyard of their Heights home. Their business grew from a door-to-door egg delivery service to what is now known as “Jake’s Finer Foods,” the largest and only family-owned food distributor headquartered in Houston. Louise

Jerry Dressler, Jr.
Louise Jacob

worked at Jake’s from its inception until several years ago when she was no longer able to drive alone to the company’s present location. Despite her absence at the building, her footprints remain on the hearts of all of those employees lucky enough to have met her. She was a treasure.

Louise was always busy with both the family and the family business. While Jake was the “Jake’s Eggs” CEO, we all knew that Louise was the Jacob family CEO! They both worked tirelessly to grow their business and raise their family, but Louise had the far more difficult task as she had primary responsibility for their three daughters, Linda, Patsy, and Dinah.

After moving to Houston, Louise and Jake joined Zion Lutheran Church. They were very active members, and their daughters were all baptized, confirmed, and married in that church. Louise was a long-time member of Zion’s choir, the Altar Guild, the Ladies Circle, and long ago, played on the Zion women’s volleyball team. She assisted with Zion’s “The Gathering” program long before she became a recipient of that ministry. She enjoyed the fellowship of Game Day, the Ladies’ Lunch Bunch, and many other Zion activities. She was honored to have played the accordion at one of the Octoberfest services. Louise rarely missed a Sunday service and remained an active and engaged member of Zion until her passing.

She was also a member of both SPJST Lodge 88, Houston and its Birthday Club Sisters, and past president of the Parent Teacher Association, the Retail Grocers Association of Houston Ladies Auxiliary, and the Houston Kiwanitas.

Louise loved dancing, walking, traveling, playing cards and dominoes, collecting all types of chicken items, all sports - but particularly the Houston Rockets, solving jigsaw puzzles, playing the piano and accordion, all types of music, and all kinds of people. She had an enormous capacity for friendship and stretched that way beyond ordinary limits - she was extraordinary.

She adored her family and always made each of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and their spouses and friends feel special and loved. She had a keen interest in everything they were involved with and kept up with their ever-busy lives. She loved them all wholeheartedly and received that same affection in return. She never

missed a birthday, anniversary, or special occasion for anyone in her immediate or extended family or for her many friends and fellow church members.

She was a neighborhood icon and the closest grandma or great-grandma that many of the neighborhood children had. She was delighted to learn that her determination and self-discipline in walking the neighborhood four to five days a week for over 40 years served as an inspiration for so many living around her.

Louise was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Kervin (Jake); son-inlaw Donnie Day; parents Robert A. and Martha Fuchs; siblings and their spouses Robert G. and Celesta Fuchs, Adeline and Lespa Landua, Hildegard and Cecil Lewis, Mildred and Barney Hart, Franklin and La Verne Fuchs, and Milton and Lee Fuchs.

She is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Linda and Leonard Bench, Patsy and Sam Sakowitz, and Dinah and Michael Sultanik; grandchildren and their spouses Shelly and Kevin Ullrich, Christy Brown, Michael and Kristi Bench, Tami Sakowitz and Nick Smoley, Lori and John Reilly, April and Chris Mallia, and Jeremy and Tiffany Day; great-grandchildren Christopher and spouse Helen, Jessica and Caleb Ullrich, Taylor, Jacob and Caden Bench, Campbell and Connor Oldham, Tennessee, Brooklyn, and Ireland Day; and Ryan Sakowitz-Smoley; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law Jerry and Barbara Jacob and Jocie (Jacob) and Floyd Braun; a multitude of nieces and nephews; and an enormous number of friends.

Visitation for Louise was Monday, October 21 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Pat H. Foley and Company in Houston. Her funeral service was Tuesday, October 22 at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran ChurchELCA in Houston. A committal service followed at 3 p.m. at Earthman Resthaven Funeral Home and Cemetery in Houston.

The family requests donations be made in Louise’s memory to Zion Lutheran Church, 3606 Beauchamp, Houston, Texas 77009, 713-869-1493; The American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA), www.apdaparkinson.org, 800-223-2732; or to the charity closest to your heart.

After graduation, she furthered her education at Austin Business School, where she honed her skills.

Patsy married Edward Luna in 1956, and together they built a loving home on the east side of Temple, where they lived for over 50 years. They raised three children: Catherine, David, and Edward (Eddie). Patsy filled her home with laughter and joy, welcoming her grandchildren and great-grandchildren whenever she could.

Teague Veterans Center in Temple, eventually serving as the secretary to the local director. Additionally, she worked every evening for 45 years with local physician, Dr. Jack Weinblatt.

A passionate advocate for recognition and equality, Patsy was deeply involved in the Hispanic and African-American communities of Temple. Patsy was instrumental in the improvement of local parks, including Hamilton Park, Jackson Park, and the Wilson Park Recreation Center. One of her proudest achievements was the installation of a splash pad at Ferguson Park, a testament to her commitment to creating safe spaces for children and families. In recognition of her contributions, the Temple Parks and Leisure Services building was renamed in her honor in 2014. Her dedication extended beyond her official roles; she served on numerous boards and organizations, including the Temple Coordinated Child Care Council (Temple 4-C), the Greater Temple/Belton League of United Latin American Citizens Council, the Hispanic Leadership Council, Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the Texas Revolution, and the Central Texas Council of Government, Aging Advisory Council.

Above all her civic accomplishments, Patsy cherished her family. She was a devoted mother to her daughter, Catherine Luna (Tony Bassa), and her two sons, David Luna (Lesa West) and Edward E. Luna (Peggy). She took great joy in her eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Patsy took immense joy in her role as a mother, nurturing her children with love and support. Family gatherings were a highlight of her life, and she took great pride in creating a warm and welcoming home filled with laughter and an occasional patriotic family parade. She had a special way of making birthdays memorable, often mailing a card and a stick of gum to celebrate each one’s special day. Her legacy will continue through those that knew and loved her, each of whom held a special place in her heart. Whether she was organizing a family reunion, attending school events, or sharing stories, she made every moment count, instilling values of love, kindness, and community.

A faithful member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church for nearly 70 years, Patsy’s faith guided her life and community service.

Texas Czech Genealogical Society offers 2024 Christmas legend ornaments

Legend of the Christmas Stocking T-246 - $17

According to legend, a father was unable to provide his three daughters with a dowry. Hearing of their misfortune and wishing to help, St. Nicholas dropped three bags of gold coins down the chimney. The coins fell into each of the daughters’ stockings, which were hanging by the fire to dry, providing a sufficient dowry. Since then, stockings hung by the fireplace are a traditional part of Christmas gift giving.

Once again, the Texas Czech Genealogical Society is offering a selection of Christmas ornaments that pertain to a legend, a symbol, or a tradition. Over the years, we have been overwhelmed with the comments from many of you, expressing the special meaning that these ornaments have had for you and your loved ones. We hope that this year’s offering is equally meaningful.

Ornament orders may be placed by contacting Nancy Machu 512-971-4284 (please leave a message for a return call) or by emailing nbmachu@gmail.com.

Candles with Holly OR-205 - $22

Shipping charges will be added based on the number of ornaments ordered. Payment can be made by charge card or personal check. Ornaments may also be purchased at the TCGS conference on November 2 at Caldwell Civic Center. This is an all-day event where we will be honoring our Veterans, past and present. Morning refreshments and a catered chicken fried steak lunch with sides and dessert are included. For registration information see article above for information. Nancy Machu Lodge 29, Taylor

prayer. He named his creation “Pretiola,” a Latin word meaning “little reward,” and gave it as a treat to children who recited their prayers. The pretzel is often served during Lent to remind Christians of their faith.

Pewter Nail OR-211 - $12

Symbol of the Rosary T-256 - $17

“Hail Mary, full of grace. Our Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.” This lovely ornament, adorned with a sparkling gold cross hanging from the rosary, will be loved by friends and family for years to come.

Holly is a symbol of life in the bleak and cold months of winter. The bright reds and green colors of the berries and leaves were symbols of rebirth and life. When the deep red berries appeared on the holly plant, the season of feasting and merriment began. In early years, Father Christmas decorated his hood with holly, which represented the crown of thorns that Jesus wore when He was crucified, and the red berries represented the blood He shed for our sins. Candles represent Christ, the Light of the World. “I am the light

of the world. No follower of mine shall ever walk in darkness; no, he shall possess the light of life” John 8:12. Candles also remind us that we are to be light to others, to show them the way to Christ, and when hopelessness sets in, to remember that the darkness cannot overcome Christ’s light.

Tradition of the Pretzel T-224 - $11

Pretzels had their beginning in the 6th century at an Italian monastery.

A young monk was preparing unleav ened bread for Lent and creatively twisted scraps of bread dough to resemble arms folded in

The pewter nail is a reminder of the nails used to construct Baby Jesus’ manger, as well as the nails used in Christ’s crucifixion on the cross. The message that accompanies this ornament tells the story of Jesus, God’s love and His greatest gift of all, given freely to those who follow Him.

Symbol of the Lighthouse T-258 - $15

Lighthouses lift up our spirits and inspire us. Just as the bright beacon of light guides ships along their route, directing them away from danger, the lighthouse symbolizes guidance through life. The lighthouse also serves as a symbol of Christ, the light of the world.

Kimary and Garry Marble, our extremely knowledgeable librarians, will explain how we are related to veterans, spotlighting those who are relatives or friends of TCGS members.
