The recent State Youth Showcase was a success, and we extend our heartfelt congratulations to everyone involved—our incredible youth, their supportive families, and our dedicated members and guests. Each of you played a vital role in making this event memorable, and we couldn’t be prouder of our SPJST community.
One of the most touching moments during the Showcase was captured by District Seven Director Regina House, who was backstage coordinating the royalty contestant lineup. As the Miss SPJST contestants prepared to go on stage, Regina witnessed a truly touching moment. The contestants, despite being in competition, gathered in a circle, joined hands, and prayed together. They supported each other wholeheartedly, cheering one another on, hugging, and offering high-fives as they exited the stage. Regina perfectly summed up the spirit of SPJST when she shared the photo, saying, “What a sweet group of girls running for Miss SPJST. They all gathered in a circle and prayed together and cheered each other on! THIS is what SPJST is all about!”
Back-to-School
As we transition from the summer activities of camp and the Showcase to the back-to-school season, we want to send out positive and uplifting vibes to all our youth. The beginning of a new school year is always an exciting time filled with opportunities for learning, growth, and new friendships. To our students, we wish you a year full of success, discovery, and joy. Remember that each new school year is a chance to start fresh and to make the most of the opportunities that come your way. And to our teachers and school personnel, we appreciate your dedication and commitment to nurturing the next generation. Thank you for all you do, and may this school year be one of the best yet.

Member expresses appreciation for SPJST Military Grant
Dear SPJST,
I was honored to receive the SPJST Military Grant in lieu of the 2015 District Merit Scholarship and the 2018 Ben F. Trcalek Jr. Scholarship. I am a proud veteran of the United States Navy, and receiving this grant means the world to me. I enjoyed every moment of being in the SPJST Youth Program, and the lessons it taught me growing up provided me with valuable skills and life lessons.
Thank you, District One Director Mr. Donnie Victorick, for all of your continued love and support. Also, thanks to everyone who prayed for my safe return home.
Again, thank you, SPJST, and keep up the good work with the opportunities and scholarships you are providing.

dous support as I pursue my educational goals.
College is expensive and creates stress and financial hardship for many who pursue higher education. I am forever thankful for your generous decision to help contribute to my educational costs as I further my studies. Your help and support encourages me to be generous to others in every stage of my life. Not only does this scholarship inspire me, but it also motivates me to continue to work hard and strive for excellence in all I do.
This fall, I will attend Texas Tech University to study business administration. I am currently unsure about what concentration of business I wish to pursue, but I am excited to learn every aspect and to discover what I enjoy. I am interested in attaining many certifications that will help me in the business industry and minoring in management. I am committed to maintaining a strong academic record while being involved in faith-based student organizations and working a part-time job. This scholarship will significantly contribute to my success in these endeavors.

It’s Your Life
It May Not Be What You Think
You’ve heard the saying, “seeing is believing.” I say, “knowing is believing.” The stock market is moving faster than a roller coaster, and CD rates, mutual funds, annuities, and index products can get confusing. You invest your money in one place, only to find it’s not what you thought it was. You move it somewhere else, and it still doesn’t meet your expectations. Can't figure out what to do with your money? You thought you were getting something better, but a year later, you realize it wasn’t what you thought. What we see never seems to be what we get. We hear this company is paying this rate, and another is paying that rate. We choose the higher rate but end up making less. Why is that? Simply put, it’s not about what they say you will make but what you actually make, which lies in the disclosure (fine print). This bears repeating: always look at the rules of the product, not the advertising. Let’s look at an example:
You see an ad for 5.25% on a CD and another for 4.75% on an annuity. If you invest $100,000 in the CD at 5.25%, you would receive $5,250 in interest at the end of one year. However, you will receive a 1099 for that interest, and if you are in the 25% tax bracket, you would pay $1,312.50 in taxes. That leaves your net gain at $3,937.50 or 3.973%. If you invested the same $100,000 in an annuity at 4.75%, you would receive $4,750 in interest, and because you don’t pay taxes until you use it, you netted 4.75%. Even though the CD paid a higher rate, you actually netted less. What looked like a better deal was not. In a higher tax bracket, the difference would be even greater. This applies to multiple types of investments. Don’t look at what they say you will make; look at what you will actually make.
When comparing rates with the same products, always check the disclosures (fine print). One company might offer a 1% higher rate, but in the fine print, it’s a bonus rate that drops significantly after the first year, leading to losses by the third year. Another company might increase their surrender charge to 16% instead of 10%. Another might reduce the 10% free withdrawal to 5%. Still another might charge a $3,750 flat fee every year. Some products are taxed with the estate if something happens to you, which can be very high for the beneficiaries. The truth always lies in the disclosures. So, when you considering moving your money (whether to us or away from us), always look at the fine print before making any move. Know what the longterm rules are and what you’re getting into. It may not be what you think.
SPJST Annuities: Key Features
1. Guaranteed Growth: Our annuities are guaranteed to have more tomorrow than today. We don’t charge fees (though there is a surrender charge, but we haven’t raised it in over 15 years).
2. Probate and Estate Tax Benefits: They are not subject to probate and estate taxes. They are calculated as part of the estate to determine taxes but are taxed as ordinary income. Your beneficiaries get access to this money while your estate is in probate.
3. Tax Advantages: They are taxed as ordinary income and only when you use them. This means when you use it, you may be in a lower tax bracket, thus paying less in taxes.
4. Lifetime Income: You can take a lifetime income, meaning you get paid as long as you live (because you don’t need money in Heaven).
Before you move your money, whether to us or from us, compare the disclosures before making a decision. We
are more than happy to help you compare, and if you have a better deal, we will shake your hand and congratulate you. In the end, it may not be what you think.
“The trick to forgetting the big picture is to look at everything close up.”

The 2024 SPJST State Youth Showcase, a captivating celebration of youthful creativity and talent, concluded on a high note on Saturday, July 27 at the Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center in Temple, Texas. With an array of remarkable performances, inspiring displays of skill, and a strong sense of community spirit, this year’s event left a lasting impression on all who attended.
The showcase, organized by the SPJST Home Office, brought together 92 bright and talented youth participants from across the state. The theme of the event, “Going for Gold,” set the tone for the showcase, emphasizing the importance of nurturing young talents and encouraging them to reach for the stars.
The two-day event featured a mix of categories, including Creative Arts, Talent, Royalty, and a Special Category. From intricately crafted artworks to awe-inspiring musical performances, the showcase truly had something for everyone.
Friday’s festivities kicked off with the Showcase check-in at the Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center. Excitement filled the air as participants presented their creative arts entries for judging, while also connecting with fellow participants, mentors, and organizers.
The Special Category, a 30-minute challenge, provided an opportunity for participants to showcase their ingenuity and quick thinking by crafting pipecleaners – 5 red, 5 white, and 5 blue. The engaging and dynamic projects demonstrated the participants’ ability to adapt and create under pressure.
Saturday dawned with an air of anticipation as doors opened at 8:30 a.m. The opening ceremony, beseda, talent, and royalty competitions followed, captivating the audience with their energy and flair.
The event culminated with the announcement of age group winners, District and State Royalty, and a heartwarming showcase of photos and videos that captured the essence of the showcase and the youth year.
Frank Horak, the State Fraternal Director, expressed his appreciation, saying, “The 2024 SPJST State Youth Showcase has been a journey of inspiration and talent. How families can get ready for a new school year
Children will soon be trading in the chimes of neighborhood ice cream trucks for the bells of school as summer vacation gives way to the start of a new academic year. August through September is prime back-to-school season, with children all across the country stocking their backpacks and shopping for new school wardrobes.
There is more to getting ready for the start of school than making sure pencils are sharpened and tablets are charged. Parents and children can work together to ensure the transition back to the classroom is as seamless as possible.
Adjust sleep and wake times
and trampoline centers. These can be low-pressure locations to dust off social skills.
Know the route or plan for school transportation
Students may be driven independently, ride the school bus, walk or bike, or carpool with others to and from school. Families can establish plans so that getting to and from school is not something kids need to worry about. Practice routes and timing, taking into consideration that when schools open there will be much more traffic. Parents can reassure children that there will be a learning curve, but all of the kinks generally get worked out during the first week.

Summer vacation often means letting loose of schedules for a while, and that may translate into later-than-normal bedtimes and rising a little later in the morning. Everyone in the household will have to reacquaint themselves with schedules that ensure kids get to school on time. A few weeks before the first day of school, start incrementally going to bed at an earlier time and start waking up earlier each morning. Try to plan out the increments so that by the time the last few days of summer vacation wind down, the family is on target with a waking schedule that mirrors the school schedule.
Acclimate to being around people
Although summer vacation may involve trips that bring children in contact with other people, it may have been some time since they’ve spent five or more hours per day around 20 to 30 people their age. It may take a transition period to get used to being around a bunch of peers, so families can visit places where there tend to be crowds of kids, such as zoos, aquariums, parks,
Most students don’t want to think about studying, homework, and testing while on summer break, but it can be beneficial to stay current on some lessons. Summer slide refers to the loss of some of the learning achieved during the previous school year over the summer break. Some experts say summer slide is overstated, but it can’t hurt for students to refresh their memories on some math, science and language arts concepts over break so that they will be ready to hit the books when the new school year begins.
Prep for school lunches
Children and adults can work together to map out healthy eating options for school lunch. Many school districts have lunch plans that can be purchased through an online account. Participating students simply enter a number or swipe a code at checkout. School lunches are built to be nutritionally diverse and have options that even picky eaters will like. School is right around the corner, and families should get ready for the routine and needs that go with the academic year as the first day draws closer. (MS) —SPJST—

tember 17, 1934, in Bay City to Paul and Mary Novosad. She quickly acquired the family nickname of “Sudie” which later became “Sue,” and she remained so her entire life. She was an intelligent, curious child who learned to read at an early age and moved through elementary and high school quickly, graduating high school in East Bernard at the age of 16. Her mother often described her as a “stubborn” child, though Sue would tell you that she had no idea why. From her earliest childhood, Sue loved stories, both reading and writing them, and this love would form the path that the rest of her life would take.
After graduating high school, Sue rode the bus to her classes at Wharton Junior College. Also on that daily bus ride was a young man named Bill. The rest, of course, is history. In 1954, she married her partner in life and love, W.G. “Bill” Coody, and together they had many adventures, including raising their three children, rescuing countless stray cats and dogs, scouring shops and auctions for unique antique finds, running political campaigns, and sharing stories and laughs about their teaching careers.
Sue was a lifelong educator, connecting with and nurturing countless students ranging from elementary to college-aged. She taught in Weatherford ISD from 1963 to 1965 and 1967 to 1973. Her classroom was full of noise and fun, sometimes to the chagrin of her more traditional colleagues, who would pop their heads in her door to shush her and her students. It didn’t work. Sue knew then what is now considered basic educational doctrine: children should learn actively, not passively (which sometimes involves a little chaos along the way).
In 1973, she shifted her teaching skills to the classrooms of Weatherford College, where she worked with energy and devotion until her retirement in 2011. She wore many hats at Weatherford College, but she consistently maintained a passion for reading and writing education, particularly for first generation students and students in her remedial English classes. Even years after her retirement, Sue just couldn’t stay away from WC: in 2017, she ran for and won a seat on the board of trustees, where she served faithfully until 2022. One of Sue’s core beliefs was that each individual she encountered was worthy, deserving, and capable, and she helped many students (as well as friends and family)
believe this about themselves. Many of Sue’s closest friendships were forged with colleagues from WC, and her family thanks each of these colleagues and friends for being such a vital and joyful part of her life.
Sue was a member of Parker County Retired Teachers Association and Weatherford College Ex-Students Association. For much of her life, she was a member of the Methodist Church, and in her retirement years, she joined Grace First Presbyterian Church where she was elected to serve as an elder and enjoyed classes and worship with her friends and pastors. She was also an active, lifelong Democrat, dedicated to supporting Bill’s political career as well as to political and social causes of her own.
Sue was a member of SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton-East Bernard.
She was a wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, and great-grandmother, as well as a friend and surrogate mother or grandmother to many. She was a listener, advisor, mentor, and storyteller, fiercely devoted to the people she loved. She made the most delicious spinach balls and a mean slice of cheese toast.
The last year of her life brought with it many changes, including a move to Brookdale Senior Living, where she enjoyed wonderful friendships with both residents and staff.
Sue is reunited in death with her husband of 58 years, Bill Coody; son Jim Coody, whom Sue has missed every day for the last 43 years; grandson Jason Buechler; and sisters Mary Jo Hlavinka, Frankie Cordelle, and Polly Graves.
She is survived by daughter Cathy Zellers and husband Ed; son Sam Coody and wife Lisa; grandchildren Claire and Richard Varnon, Jake and Amy Coody, Ethan and Hadley Coody, and Caitlin Zellers and Ashley Guillory; greatgrandchildren Kira St. Jacques, Charlotte Varnon, Elena Coody, Sofia Coody, and Iris Varnon; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends whom she adopted as family.

I feel a warmth around me, like your presence is so near. And I close my eyes to visualize your face when you were here. I endure the times we spent together, and they are locked inside my heart. As long as I have those memories, we will never be apart. Even though we cannot speak anymore, my voice is always there, because every night before I sleep, I have you in my prayer.
