Craft Contests
YAD Craft Contests
Entrant Categories YAD is open to members from grades kindergarten through 11th grade, based on the member’s grade level in the current school year. As an example of the appropriate entrant category, students who have completed 11th grade and submit an entry during the summer before 12th grade will be considered entrants for 11th grade.

Craft Contest Categories Youth may enter five craft contest entries, each in a different category.
Constructed Items Photography Dessert Pictorial Arts Handicraft Science and Education Hobby Kits Sewing Needlework
General Craft Rules A contestant may not enter more than five entries in craft, each in a different category.
Items must be made by the youth entering them after the previous year’s State YAD, or the craft entry will be disqualified.
Any article that has been previously exhibited by an individual at an SPJST Youth Achievement Day will not be accepted even if the article has been altered or modified.
Items must be complete before entering. Wet paint, glue, etc. will disqualify the item.
Craft contestants must not include their names or their photos on any part of the entry.
No living things, other than plants, are allowed in any craft contest.
Entries advertising or using any alcohol, tobacco, or drug product logo will not be accepted.
All craft entries must be submitted online.*
Only authorized personnel may assist to set up entries at the DYC’s or State Fraternal Director’s discretion.
Any entry that requires a flat base for transportation must fit the project and be no larger than a 3-feet by 3-feet by 3feet surface.

8 For the 2022 contest, the subject matter must be a repurposed item.* 8 No project may exceed 3-feet by 3-feet by 3feet. 8 Entry can be embellished with other items. Be creative! 8 Must take out of original form and purpose.*
Dessert - Cookies*
Handicraft
Any constructed or assembled item which does not qualify for any other category. This category includes:
8 Cake decorated items 8 Ceramics 8 Glass etching 8 Laminated art (decoupage, etc.) 8 Liquid lead items 8 Macramé 8 Metal punch 8 Painting on wood, glass, or cloth 8 Paper maché 8 Plaster of Paris 8 Pre-cut materials such as toothpicks, popsicle sticks, clothespins, matches, etc. 8 Pre-fabricated wax 8 Stained glass
2022:Cookies 2023:Kolaches 2024: Sweet Rolls
8 Entry must contain 25 cookies. Entry must be all the same type of cookie.
8 Cookies must be displayed on a white styrofoam plate and should be brought to the competition in a plastic (zip-lock type) bag.
8 No mixes allowed. Cookies must be made from scratch and must be baked.
8 No unbaked or refrigerated items.
Hobby Kits
Projects bought in a kit and completed by the youth.
8 Photo (.jpg or .pdf) of the kit packaging must be attached with the online YAD entry submission.*
8 Projects without instructions will be disqualified.
8 Complete recipe (listing all ingredients and method of preparation) must be submitted as a .jpg or .pdf or inputted with the entry.
8 Only the dessert item will be judged.
8 Judges will taste all entries.
8 All State YAD entries in the dessert category will be sold following judging. All proceeds will benefit the SPJST Foundation for Camp Kubena.
Needlework
8 Items made entirely by hand.
8 Includes embroidery, crocheting, knitting, needlepoint, and latch hook.
8 All stitches must be visible on front and back of entry. Edges may be finished as long as all stitches are visible.
8 Items may be framed (no part of the frame may cover any stitches).

Photography - Street Impressions*
Each year, a different type of category will be selected for the contest.
2022: Street Impressions 2023: Big Machines 2024: Sunset/Sunrise
Sewing
8 Items made by using the sewing machine such as clothing, pillows, and quilts.
8 No additions, such as glued-on appliqués or paint are allowed.
8 Sewn-on accessories are acceptable.
8 All entries must illustrate the current year’s category — Street Impressions.*
8 Photograph must be taken after 2021 State YAD.*
8 Subject must be the focal point of the category to be judged. The “Street Impressions” subject in the photograph can be any kind of street impressions as long as it is not offensive or depicting alcohol, tobacco, or a drug product.*
8 Photographs must be black and white.*
8 Photo’s image must be in a 4:5 ratio (8-inches by 10inches) with no border.
8 Only the following minor digital manipulation is allowed: Converting from color to black and white, cropping, and straightening the image. Any other manipulation will be disqualified.*
8 Photograph must be taken by the youth; not of the youth, friends, or family.
8 Photographs must be displayed in a clear, protective sleeve. No matting, mounting, or framing allowed.
8 A high quality digital image of the photography entry must be uploaded as either a .jpg or .pdf file with the online YAD entry submission.
Science and Education
8 The entry size must be no larger than a standard project board - 36-inches in height by 48-inches in width.
8 Scientific experiment.
8 Research project.
8 Drafting project.
8 Collection in which each item is labeled and described.
8 No live items, other than plants, allowed.
Pictorial Arts
8 A painting or drawing on paper, canvas, or poster board.
8 No tracing or stencil letters allowed. Rulers and graph paper are allowed.
8 May be framed.
8 Items may not be behind glass.
8 Maximum size not to exceed 360 square inches (excluding frame).
8 Additions to the pictorial will disqualify the picture (additions are anything other than paint, ink, pencil, crayon, chalk, or markers).
8 Pictures may be sprayed with fix-it.
