Tiskovy vYbor gesteho sjezdu, konaneno v Granger, vypracoval podminky, dle kterYch by sarnostatnY organ mohl bYti vydavan. Nektefi delegati zastavali hied, te by postaeilo, kdy by spolkove zpravy byly nadale uvefejnovany v listu stavajicim, ale tyto nazory byly pfehlasovany petkrate silnej gi vethinou, aby SPJST mela sviij samostatny organ.

Tapala, kterY rovnet dostal fitad redaktora. Ku kryti vYloh spojenYch s vydanim organu muses katdy elen Jednoty piatiti etvrtletne ureitY poplatek.

Redaktor Mouoka zastaval tuto funkci od 1. ledna 1933 at do sveho onemocneni v polovici roku 1950. Resignoval kratce pied svor smrti v lednu 1951.

Tichou a vdeenou vzpominku zaslouti si byvalY redaktor Vestniku, bratr Franta Moueka. Bylo to pied rokem, kdy dne 6. ledna zerntel bratr Moueka ye svern domovo ye West. JAK SE PO ✓ITALO VE STAROVEKU Je nee() jednoduSg ih net poeitani? Odtikavat jeden, dva, th, etyti, pet atd. uml katcly. Praveky alovek, ktery obYval naSi Zerni pied statisici lety, neznal oheri a neumel poeitat. Takovi proroci a hrdinove odem nikdy neexistovali. Lide se naueili pooltat sami postupne behern mnoha tisict let. Dedice zkuSenosti a vedomosti od cliivejS4ch pokoleni, prohlubovali a zdokonalovali stale sve pootatske umeni. Soudoba Veda o eislech je velka a slatta. Je to pfededim aritmetika, jednajici o vlastnostech eisel, a algebra, t. j. vecia o zakonech vzajemnYch vztaha eisel. Obe tyto vedy jsou opet cast' matematiky, t. j. vedy, ktera pojednava o prostorovYch formach , a kvantitativnich vztazlch skuteeneho sveta eili o vecech naprosto realnich. Matematika neni prazdnym vYmyslem mudrct. Vznikla z prakticke potteby lidi poznavat pfirodu a jeji zakony, aby mohla sloutit aloveku. 0 tom mitterne miti pouhe domnenky. Tkemi cestami se mfiterne dostat o sta.let' nazpet a pokusit se rozfeSlt tuto zahadu. Prvni cesta je studium jazyka, fistniho podani a pisni. V jazyku se zachovalo mnoho stop nejstadi doby, stop to doby, kdy lide jegte neumeli psat. Jazykovi odbornici, filologove pomohli zkonstruovat zpiisob tivota pravekeho eloveka.

Bylo-li poeitanYch pfedmeta vice net dva; pak tikali proste mnoho. Postupne k prvnim dvema eislurn pHbyvala dalSi. Lide se naueili poeitat do pets a ispojovat d ye petky v desitku diky poeitadlu, kterYm obdafila eloveka sama pfiroda: dvenia rukarn s deseti prsty.

dil i nejjednodugS1 zptsob poeitani. Zvlag tnich znakti (Cislic) k zapisovani eisel tehdy nebylo. Adak slova "jeden", "pet", "dvacet" a jine eislovky byly zobrazovany ureitYmi hieroglyfy jako ostatni slova. TakovYch eisel-hieroglyft bylo pomerne malo, protote v to dobe umeni lide poeitat ne vice net do ita vzo.cne do tisice. Pied ttemi a pub tisici lety ji2 znali Egypt'ane cela Cisla a zlomky. Tvaf otcovu pfelet1 mraeek jakesi rozpaeitosti. "Hochu, jsou to dirldite veci . . . ale ted' toho nechme, az budeme sedeti nekde u dobreho obeda a budeme si moci vaechno vypraveti. Ted' napted vynajdi cestu k feke, abychom se dostali do New Yorku, a pak pfimo do hotelu." "Nu'e, a co dale?" "A co dale," vybuchnul pojednou otec, jakoby se chtel jednim razem zbaviti telkeho bfemene. "Nae, to je dale, 2e se chci deniti." Washington nyni take odldil doutnik. Trva-li takova porucha dedi dobu a jsouli spankove ptesto, yky dlouhe, ze ptirozeno, le takovYto aryvkovy spanek neposkytuje telesne a du gevni posily.

KOUSKY CHYTROUgtINY. (Pokradovani.) Pak gel a hledal &tine princezny. S. vdtorka, ktera nic nedovedla, trpela hlad, krome toho princ nalehal, aby mu otevfela; koneene to udelala a kdyt princ vegel, sehral s ni tout komedii jako s jeji sestrou.

hlasil, ae ''sester hledati neprijde, dokud ona nesvoli ke sriatku, protote by jiste byly proti tornu. Sotva vytahl paty, betela Chytrou gka a ustlala mu postel nad derou do kanalu, kam se hazely v gechny odpadky z vete. Snadno nagla 8vitorku. Princ zapornnel klie ye dverich.

MUSINGS OF THE EDITOR YOUR EDITOR TAKES this opportunity to thank you for the beautiful Christmas cards and greetings, expressing splendid sentiments. Many of you stated only your name and omitted your address. Many of you added "May we enjoy your Musings in the year 1952 as we have this past year," or a similar flattery remark. THE ENGLISH SECTION of the Vestnik was added by the voice of the delegates assembled in the 3th SPJST convent•on held in Taylor, in 1940. Four years earlier, 'there was an attempt to add two pages of English reading matter to the content of the official publication, but the motion was lost by a slim margin of seven votes. The chairman of the convention publication committee, Dr. Micek, professor of Czech at the University of Texas, in Austin, made a passionate plea for retaining and preserving a 100% Czech official paper. Four years later, in Taylor, the sentiment had already changed to the extent that the delegates added four WITH THIS ISSUE THE VESTNIK pages of English reading matter. • has reached its fortieth birthday. V I B T N 1 IC WEST, TEXAS

Wednesday, January 2, 1952.

YOUR NEXT TEN YEARS Add 10 years to your present age, and that's how old you will be when your eyes have seen for themselves all of the developments that are foretold in this article The -next 10 years will change you in many' ways and will carry you past the midpoint of the century, closer to the year 2000 than to the year 1900. But the decade will bring no miracles --merely the natural evolution of plans and ideas and trends already in existence. ' These predictions are not based on dream's' itcrystal gazing. Instead, they are sithple and rather flat-footed projections of present facts. And after all, 10 years from now is only tomorrow. The' set of predictions, based on the assumption and hope that somehows or other a war will be avoided, is the only bne that makes any sense. So that is the assumption w h i c h has been adopted in this discussion. The 10-year look ahead is meant to be practical, useful in your own life and affairs. It takes in your income, your kitchen, your taxes, your groceries, your automobile, your health. It takes in politics, `schools, labor unions, atoms. It pokes into your town and your home and your office. You cannot plan for everything that lies ahead, but you cari plan against a background of probabilities—and here are stone of the probabilities. Population will pass the 160-million Mark -during the Fifties, -and the labor will reach 65 million by the ,late Fifties —the largest ever. The average age will rise, but not enough to provide a horde of old folks to overburden the younger folks. That problem remains for future decades.A stiri3lus of women will cause talk and a few changes. About 1 milion ware women' than men in the early Fifties. Older women will account for most, but not all, -of the surplus. There will be more 'working women. The competition for huM)ands will not get any less. Many more new houses will be built the next ten years but at a slower pace than in the :recent past. More smaller and middleSized houses, very few mansions. Progress in housekeeping and home tending, but no really radical changes. On the whole, a citizen plucked out of a 1952 home and dropped into a 1962 one wouldn't feel out of place. Housekeeping will get steadily easier— and a good thing, too, for household help will get scarcer and more expensive. Gadgets will continue to lighten the housewife's burden, but in a somewhat

different way than they have in the past. Instead of just saving time and labor, they will make it possible for the housewife to manage a home more efficiently and smoothly. Her work will be easier to schedule, plan, arrange in 1960 as in 1949. But the housewife won't have to jam cake baking, into the middle of 10 other tasks just because company is due -- she can bake half dozen cakes some afternoon when she has free, time, freeze them, and serve them whenever she pleases. It will take just as much time and effort to put in coffee and water and flick the switch when she is using one .of the new automatic coffe makers. But the job can be done leisurely the night before—for the contraption turns itself on at 7 a. m. turns itself off when the coffee's done. The grocery store is more and more likely to be a unit of a self-service local or regional chain, less and less likely to be an independent or an outlet for one of the big national chains. Grocery stores that keep evening hours will be common. Meat will be almost entirely precut, prepackaged and preweighted, thereby eliminating the butcher counter except as a one-man annex to serve, the housewife who needs something special. Vegetables and fruits will be padkaged much more in the future. Sooner or later you will buy almost all fruits and the majority of vegetables in ready-filled sacks or cellophane or cartons. Frozen foods will still represent a minority of total food sales but their pro portion will grow steadily and swiftly, The precooked frozen items—roast turkeys, stews, chicken pies—will boom. Nearly every community will be busting its britches at the seams in the next 10 years. They are behind schedule in providing physical facilities for the larger populations. It will take the whole of the decade to catch up with the needs and to fill in the deficiencies caused by the war. The two main problems will be schools and traffic. You will go shopping downtown less and less, buy more and more at neighborhood shopping centers and utlying branch stores. Schools will be a continuing major headache. Elementary school enrolment will climb steadily and will not hit its Peak before 1960. High schools will get a breathing spell for the first year or two. Not until 1956 will high schools really get it in the neck with crowding, but their problems will last well into the Sixties. The schools will still' be inadequate in 1960. School-building design will move to•-

ward medium rather than giant size; low, spread-out structures; lots of window space, outdoor classrooms, play areas —functional rather than monumental I design. Smaller cities will grow faster . than big ones. They will find themselves Ioaded with problems which heretofore have seemed to belong only to big cities. The need for more police protection, for example, and more parking space. This means cities of from 100,000 down. Farm to city. The shift will continue. Farms will lose people; towns and cities will gain them. The United States will be even more urbanized 10 years hence than it is today. But also more city people will go to the country just beyond the suburbs, and get themselves small acreages, not to farm but just for elbow room. This is a strong trend. For agriculture, almost complete mechanization by the decade's end, with only a few specialty crops still requiring hand labor. The trend toward larger farms wi 1 speed up. Cotton, wheat and corn will be grown more on "mass production" farms. Many small farmers in other lines will stick to their guns, as relatively lowcost midget fram•machinery enables them to keep going without too-heavy investments. The high demand for milk, eggs, meat and peultry will steer more and more farmers into these lines and away from the old-time surplus crops such as cotton and wheat. Farming and farm income will be supported through the decade. Subsidy in one form or another will be greater than at present. The trend of recent years toward "social control" of agriculture will continue. Farmers will grumble against it in theory but welcome it in practice. New products, new ways of making old ones. Eere are just a few of the changes: Better lubricants and rustproofing oils from petroleum. Vastly improved weaving machinery for the textile industry, more lasting and more uniform colors in textiles, and a wider choice of patterns and materials. Diesels fast replacing steam locomotives, moving longer trains at higher speeds, making the word "choo-choo" a relic. Jet transport planes on the airlines after 1955. Synthetic gasoline and oils from coal and natural gas by 1960. Continuous casting and oxygen injection lowering the cost of making steel. Better organization of medical care. Better hospital facilities and more of them. Better plans for paying. medical (Continued on page 22.)

APPEAL TO THE HEART The question as to whether you will be successful in life insurance depends entirely upon you. No one but you can control this. If you are willing to work hard; if you understand psychology and a little bit of salesmanship; if you are sincere in whatever 'you are doing and you believe with your heart and soul in the good you are selling, you cannot help but impress the people whom you contact with your honesty and your sincerity. And as a result, these people will have faith and confidence in you and whatever you say—and this is important. So with these few, but important, qualifications, you cannot help but succeed in this business of ours. But, of course, an agent must have some intelligence. An intelligent agent must always be able to develop new ideas. Almost any idea is good if a man has the ability and is willing to work hard. The best idea is worthless if the creator is a loafer and does not want to work hard, or exert himself, in order to carry his ideas through. My prospect was a young man, 35, earning $5,000 to $6,000 a year, married, with two ,small boys. I had been trying for the last few years to sell him an educational policy for his boys, but every time brought the subject up he always had ten reasons ready—for not buying. I had practically given up the idea of ever succeeding in selling him insurance at all until one afternoon, as I was coming out of our Boston office a little boy about 8 ,years old stopped me and said, "Mister, don't you want a shine?—Shoe Shine-5 cents." All of you have undoubtedly seen hundreds and hundreds of these young, children traveling around with little w.oden boxes thrown over their shoulders, their young voices ringing out as eou passed. I had this little boy shine my shoes. Picture that; here I am, leaning against a marble building, well-dressed, wellfed and smoking a cigar, and the little boy on his hands and knees shining my shoes. His own shoes were not shined. His c:othes were torn, his face was unwashed and he locked as if he were not too well-fed either. When the boy was through shining my shoes an idea came to me. I said, P Johnnie, how would, you like to earn a dolla?" "Yes Sir, Boss," he said. Then I said, "Come with •me." And down the street the two of us went; into the building where my friend had his office. His secretary; who knew me, let me in immediately. I came into his office and said, "Johnnie, give this man a shine."

By Jacob W. Shout My friend laughed. He thought it was a quite a joke and he said, "Okay." He had no objection, adding, "By the way, Jake, the life insurance business must be tough—I see you have scmething else to do." I did not answer him and just sat in the corner watching the boy shine his shoes. When he was through, I paid him and sent him on his way. Then I closed the door, turned sharply, looked him straight in the eye and said, "Jim, what guaranty have you that if something should happen to you tonight your own little boys at home won't have to do exactly that?" He stopped smilling and becaMe very serious, and I could see tears coming to his eyes. Without waiting for a reply I took out an aplication blank and said, "Jim, sign here, and I will have the doctor within an hour." I sold this man two educational policies that same afternoon. In the same way as radar cuts through the fog to outline its objective so must our sales reasons be able to reach into the heart of the prospect to whom we are talking, in order to get action. Not figures, not comparisons between companies and policies, but action. Action, that is what I want to drive for at all times. Please always remember that the average prospect is not interested in the technical terms of your policy, or the logic of your sales talk. If his need is for personal life insurance, his action or reaction is always an emotional one. Therefore, always try to appeal to a man's heart, rather that to his head. Do not try to reason with him. Just try to reach his heart strings. A violin has four strings and a mandolin has eight. And, I am told, that there is a Chinese fiddle that has only two. But they all have a heart string -Which string do you play on? It is a fine thing to draw a clear tone on the string of logic and reason but, in the selling of life insurance, I always play on the heart string when I want to get results, especially when I am talking to a father about his son. I am going to tell you a little starry which I have used time and time again when I am trying to sell and educational policy to a father for his son. It has always brought me fine results. A father came into the room of his boy who was very ill. He sat down . to have a talk with him. The father in the rocking chair in the corner of the room and the boy in bed. The boy was unable

to move his head and had to lie in one position. They kept up their conversation until slowly the sun began to set and ,the shadows began to appear in the room,. Gradually the room got darker and ally night fell and the room was in total darkness. And the son, who had always beeP• afraid ,ef the dark said, "Dad, are ,you still here?" "Yes, Son, I am." replied the father "It is getting so dark I had better put the light on." And the boy said, "No, Dad, let it stay as it is." After a few minutes of quiet the boy said, "Dad, is your face toward mine?" And the father said, "Yes, Son, my face is looking towards yours." Then the boy said, "As long as your face is towards mine there can be .no`" darkness. The room is light and bright,: and I am not afraid of being in the dark' —I am not afraid of being in the dark." And with these words the boy fell asleep; This is protection. This is what every child should• have from his father. This is what they have a right to expect. When you get home, use this story on one of your prospects. Be sincere. You will be surprised at the effect it 'will have on him. • & • A WAY TO ADD 'WEIGHT There's one rule, if you want to call it; that, for putting weight on any thin,: person, regardless of age: Serve smaller meals more frequently. Five feedings a day is the general plan, though some authorities recommed six. The point is that most children and -grownups who are too thin seem to have poor powers of assimilation ,and in addition, may not • be able to eat much food at any one thine. What may appear like a snack to • hearty eaters looks like a big meal to. someone with a lagging appetite. So• it's best to keep portions fairly small at -re."_, gular meals, and then serve between-. meal feedings at around 10 or 10:30 in; the morning, again in the middle of the afternoon, and possibly at bedtime. Milk, graham crackers, simple sandwiches and fruits are excellent choices. Sweet, rich foods are not suitable, since they may.' spoil appetite for the next meal, or else disturb sleep. ) • • In the U. S., working is more thah way of earning a livelihood. AVOCADO Famous for and established in the production of citrus fruits, farmers of the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas like to experiment with other fruits of subtropical nature. As a result of thirty years of experiments, the Malley now has another crop on its long list. From one end of the Valley—a warm, 3,000-mile square pocket located in the s,cuthrenmost tip of Texas—to the other, the avocado is being marketed on a commerical basis. There is no large scale production of this fruit, but it is becoming more evident every day that the versatile area can produce the avocado in its most delicious and nutritious state. The avocado was not first introduced into the Valley with commercial intent. An evergreen tree, the leaf is large and leathery in appearance. The thick foliage and great height of these trees make them desirable for ornamental purposes. And ornaments they were at first, but now growers are finding them much more desirable for their money-making significance. It was not until the twentieth century that commercial avocado ) groves were planted in the United States, and now they are produced commercially only in the Valley, zouthern Florida and southern California. In. the Valley, even after the experimentation of thirty years, there is no primary variety or set of varieties that have been adpoted by the growers. There is a wide difference of opinion among the growers as to profitable types; however, for all their diversified theories, each seems to produce a particularly tasty avocado, and one that is often four times as large as those grown in other regions. Hoblitzelle Ranch, north of Mercedes, probably has the best known avocado groves in the Valley. Here, the California , varieties are grown, although Dr. R. H. Cintron, ranch horticulturist from Puerto Rico, is now conducting experiments on several other varieties. On the other hand, Ben Chambers of Harlingen, vice president of the Texas Avocado. Society and a veteran avocado grower with twenty-five years of experience in the Valley, turns thumbsclown on the West Coast types. Says Chambers, "California varieties are not adapted to Valley conditions. They are grown under drier conditions than those prevailing in the Valley, and are adapted to mountain-type growing. There are no mountains down here." Chambers' pet types are (1) the Lulu variety, a hybrid developed in Florida, (2) • a variety of undetermined origin

that was developed near Raymondville, and (3) a Mexican variety, long favored in the Ciudad Victoria area of Mexico because of its large, hardy trees. He thinks so much . of these favorites that he recently pulled up five acres of choice grapefruit in order to plant 500 avocado plants from his own nursery. In addition, Chambers recently completed setting out more than 400 trees for two other growers in the Harlingen area. Another Valley enterprise with over twenty-five years' experience with avocados is the Drake Orchards of Dcrina, whose owners also feel that California varieties are not adapted to Valley conditions, preferring instead seedlings of Guatemalan or East Indian ancestry. Fruit growth, under Rio Grande Valley conditions, is very rapid. Reports Dr. Cintron, "Mexican varieties, which normally set fruit in February, will attain maturity as early as the middle of June. And the Fuerte variety will begin maturing late in August," In Cintron's opinion the hot days and warm nights all through the Summer, keep the fruit growing all the time. The avocado has many uses, but Texans and vacationists who winter in the Valley probably are more familiar with it as it appears in a "guacamole" salad. This tasty dish, which originated in Mexico, is prepared by peeling one large avocado and mashing it with a fork; adding a ripe tomato, a small onion and one-half a garlic clove, all of which have been finely minced. Then added to this mixture are two tablespoons of salad oil, two tablespoons of vinegar and salt and pepper to taste. These ingredients are mixed thoroughly and served on a lettuce leaf. • 4 • To Change, Or Not To Change? Frances Parkington Keyes, visiting the Emperor Franz Joseph , discovered that the' ruler found relaxation and refreshment through change. A dynamo of industry, working in his study long hours every day, the Austrian employed a simple device to break the monotony. He used two- desks -- one low, the other high — and when he tired of sitting, would walk across the room and continue his work, standing! • )• It is useless for the sheep to pass remluti•ns in favor of vegetarianism while the wolf remains of a different opinion. ) • sy. • One of the first things a woman notices about a man is whether or not he notices her.

Your Next Ten Years (Continued from page 20.) and hospital expenses through health insurance funds, private and voluntary in the first half of the decade, possibly shifting to a public and compulsory system in the latter years. Cancer will become less of a dread disease as progress is made in detecting it at early stages, in perfecting surgical techniques, in controlling or arresting certain types of cancer, and in searching out its cause. But at present there are no asurances of a general "cure!: Polio will be frigtening in the next few years, but before the decade is out doctors will report promising success with drug treatments and vaccines. Old people will be more numerous, and also more leisurely, for more of them will live on pensions, both public and private. Persons now in their thirties will be middle-aged in another 10 years. As our world is organized, it's the middleaged people who bear the heavy load— for the oldsters and the youngsters. It's not too early to begin to organize your life to carry your share of the load. The toys your children play with will include the same classics—blocks, 'puzzles, dolls, animals, Noah's arks—but the kids will also be demanding toys that really "do things." Your daughter w)11 not only want a doll that wets its nants —she will want one of the toy step-on cans to store the diapers in and a t9y washing machine that will really wash them out. Junior will • make cementn his toy cement mixer (by far the most m frightening prediction contained in this article) and his cars and trucks will operate by remote control. More toys will ba made of plastic—but the plastics will be a lot more durable. Here you have a few of the prospects for your next 10 years. Not all by any means, but a few. Some may turn out to be a little off the beam, but probably not far off, the judgments of many experts has gone into the predictions. Besides, even a few errors are better than complete fog. Read and ponder. Challenge all you want to. Remember that no effort is made to be either pleasing or displeasing. The future is both "good" and "bad," and never what you . wish it were. Remind yourself, as you set your sights for the next 10 years, that a decade is a pretty short time, and that 1962 will be here sooner than you think. • •( Force never changer anybody's mind; but education and understanding have won a lot Of victories, even though they take longer.—

ALCOHOLISM, A SOCIAL. TRAGEDY Now that alcoholism has has gained the recognition of being a malady, rather than a morality problem, the point of view for correction has shifted to serious and scientific bases. In addition to researches by the National Research Council, many of the state legislatures this year are giving consideration to bills, making provision for modern medical care for alcoholics, and for their rehabilitation. According to statistical information, alcoholism has become •a larger public health problem than diseases such as cancer and tuberctlosis. That it is a major social tragedy I can testify to, for having myself been a chronic alcoholic, I know what it means to be sick in mind and body, ignored by friend and associates, to be ashamed of by the family, and ashamed of.. myself during rational periods, even to the point of contemplating suicide as an escape.

(By Bert Shur) discovered that I had made a mistake in filling a prescription. Fortunately, for me and my would-be victim, my subconscious intelligence, the psychic, warned me and I had not yet reached the point of being entirely insensitive to its probing; otherwise, there would have been serious consequences. This shock brought a complete realization of my situation. My hands shook. I walked out of the drugstore knowing that my mind was no longer dependable and that even one drink was one too many. This happened in April, 1948, the beginning, in earnest, of my fight against myself. A 'few hours previous to this incident, a friend of mine had driven. two hundred miles from Seattle to warn me against myself. He urged that I take certain treatments which he himself had taken • with good results. He had indirectly heard of my state and came to plead with me, but my brain had been too soggy to comprehend, and he rode away disappointed.

Ivly cure came by means of two ways: sodium pentothal treatments including psychiatry, and the realization that as all, other human beings I am possessed of" 'a dual existence--physical and phyI made a decision. Gradually I lost my appetite, my face I could no longer face anyone, not even became puffy and swollen, my abdomen members of my family, and now I knew distended. However, up to this time I still that there was no help for me. At least believed that I had my brain and mind I could spare those I loved the pain of under control; in other words, I looked watching me destroying myself. Howupon my physical condition as a thing ever, in a critical moment I faced about. This time I followed an urge to take apart, until one day a shock came. For more than thirty years I had been a plane to San Francisco and have a engaged in the drug business, most of talk with my brother. He hardly recogthe time as the owner of a store or nized me; my appearance had changed stores. One day, and only by chance, I so much. I begged him not to take me to

his home, for I was ashamed to have his wife and sons see me. My brother realized my condition, both mental and physical, and took the clay off from his work. Being himself grounded in metaphysics and mysticism, he undertook to introduce inc to what was a part of his knowledge, to help me find and recognize my dual self, the psychic or true self. He stressed the power and perfection of the inner self, but that it was necessary to release it from the chains of the outer self and allow it to take control. This could be done by understanding and will power, the outer self voluntarily submitting to inner guidance. It was necessary also to heal and properly nourish the physical self. That night I flew to Seattle, instead cf going home, and submitted to sodium pentothal (truth-serum) treatments, injected intravenously. During your first treatment, the psychiatrist (while you are unconscious) asks you many questions which you answer truthfully, without even knowing it; your answers come from the subconscious mind. The psychiatrist is 'under heavy bond to destroy all questions and , answers, after trying to arrive at the cause of your drinking. This interviews goes to your earliest childhood, and forward to the present. One remains in this hypnotic sleep for about two hours and then slides into a normal sleep of from five to ten hours. On awakening, the body and mind are relaxed and most traces of nervousness have disappeared. This procedure is repeated, and while one is in this subconscious state, thoughts are implanted into the subjective mind, by the technician, for overcoming bad habits, and how to stop worryng about things that you think you should worry about. In my case these treatments were repeated every day for six days. It was during this period that I definitely accepted as fact the principle of dual consciouusness as explained by my brother. I was experiencing in a concrete way the operation of natural laws froth within me. The body could be governed by the soul through the subconscious mind, which gave out only the truth.' My , body had been governed by the objective mind and will. I had submitted to accept the consequences of my will instead of the will of the Cosmic. By listening to the Cosmic as interpreted by the subjective mind, dis coVvered the channel to true happiness. It has nothing to do with artificial stirnulants. To one who has never experienced this, it is almost impossible to explain,
