Brzy pc) navratu do Prahy pozval k sobe Benek profesor Masaryk. Mnozi Ceti profeueenci a myslitele byli jeho vdSnivkmi piivrzenci, aekoliv mel take stejne va.Snive protivniky.

To ji ostatne neptekvapovalo. S obzylaStni radosti a nem mluvila s ptateli ye vesnici, a kdy2 ho chvalili a tikali ji, 2e speje k neeemu velikemu, usmivala se a tnoucite kkvala hlavou. Znala sveho Ed- ' varda. Take otec mel z techto dobrkch zpro.v radost. MUSINGS OF THE EDITOR ONLY A SHORT REPORT that the Publication Committee, composed of Brother Jos. Hornak, of College Station, as its president, and Sister Antonia Horak, of Dallas, in charge of the Czech section, and Sister Frances Olexa, in charge of the English section, met for the regular annual deliberation on Saturday, January 12. The meeting was held in the home of Brother. Hornak, with his wife and two charming daughters as hostesses to the gathering. As you should understand, there are always more people who are either required to come to the meeting of the Publication Committee or come as guests.' This time, your editor had to come. He took his wife to accompany him. Brother Frank J. Olexa accompanied his wife. Besides, there were two representatives of the Cechoslovak Publishing Company of West, Brother Jos. F. Holasek, president, and Brother Jerome Kopecky, secretary of the publishing concern. •
• •
THERE WERE MANY, many things discussed at the meeting, all pertaining to the matters connected with the publication of our Vestnik. The full report of the inetting will be given to all the members very shortly by Sister Olexa, secretary of the Committee. Since it was Supreme Lodge that requested the meeting at this early date, and since Brother Jos. Hornak is to go before the supreme body, holding its regular meeting on January 14, it may now be mentioned that only two changes are to be recommended by the Publication Committee. The two changes are to be presented to the Supreme Lodge, and are then to be forwarded to the By-laws Oommittee which will meet on the second Sunday, February 9, at West. THE TWO RECOMMENDATIONS of the Publication Committee are: (1) to eliminate two editors, one for the Czech section, and the other for the English part; and to combine the two duties in the hands of one person, capable of both languages, having a previous journalistic experience or a college training; and (2) to enlarge the duties of the future editor to take over the duties of field manager or organizer, thus enabling the editor
to keep in contact with the members through the paper and through perqmal visits and organizational instructors. • • • IT IS HOPED THAT THE REPORT of the Publication committee will be given careful study and consideration after it is published. As much as there is some doubt among some members regarding the value of the Vestnik, the paper is being considered by many others . to be the real connecting link for the entire membership. There is some talk that it is too costly. There are remarks, here and there, that memberrs do not care to read it or receive it. There are some other objections, either genuine or fictitious. It is for the members to say what they want. To your editor, it is immaterial what the delegates at the next convenion decide. IF YOU PARDON a bit of personal matter to be injected into this matter, your editor is getting to be too old to have an_y fresh ideas. The conditions will not improve with old age advancing. Old age is a period of psychological as well as physical decline. Men and women, after they reach the advance years, have characteristic changes, including the lack of ability of straight thinking, narrowing of interest, heightened selfishness, conservatism and stiffness in opinion. When I reach that stage, I do not wish to be your editor. ♦ ♦•
WHAT YOUR EDITOR WOULD GLADLY DO, and what his most sincere wish would be in this matter, is the hope that he could handle the paper just long enough to locate an energetic and capable young person, either a man or a young lady, who would gradually assume the editorial duties in both languages. It should be the obligation of every public man or every officer of an organization like our SPJST, to find an understudy, or an alternate, who would step right in, should something human happen to the man in charge. e ♦ WITH A BIG CORPORATION, such as our SPJST, it would really be a sad arrangement if two of our top officers should meet With an accident which would incapacitate them for a while, or
would deprive us of their services, We are an insurance organization, yet we are not in any way insuring ourselves against such a happening. We do not have a single understudy, a single assistant at the headquarters, who would or could fill the enexpected vacancy. It is the most serious threat to the smooth working of our Order, should one or two of our supreme officers meet with a fatal accident. •
•
A WHILE BACK, YOUR EDITOR was discussing the matter with one of - our supreme officers about the advisability of getting some more capable assistants who would be considered as potential su preme officers. I was informed that as long as the headquarters remain in a small country town, there is no chance to get any outside help. All the help ha.s to be a home product. No one with any degree of ambition wants to be tied down to a position in a small town that has no recreational accomodations, no library, no music halls, no concerts, no amusements, no chance for advancemet. ♦ e • THIS IS NOT YOUR EDITOR'S OPINION, this is a statement received from one of the top officers. You, ask any of them, and if they are sincere, .as this one was to me, you may hear something along the same line, and probably a good deal more. So, the matter boils down to the point whether or not the delegates at the next convention will see the actual conditions in the true light, and whether or not they will have backbone enough, or vision enough or progresiveness enough to find a sensible -solution. ♦ 0
•
IN THIS CONNECTION, PERMIT your editor to call your attention to an article appearing elsewhere in this issuee under the headin g A Check-up May Save Your Life. If we were in a bigger town, says, some Rochester of the South, we could do a world of good for our members. But, pardon me, I started to tell you that I did not have any fresh ideas; therefore, just forget the last remark. But think about the other matters.

LOOKING FOR A SUMMER HOME? A Wise guy once told me that the best buy in overcoats is toward the later part of the spring, and the cheapest straw hats are at the end of the summer season. So, don't be misled by the caption of this article. Let me put the subject of this article before you by asking you a different question. Would you like a bit of paradise? A place to call your own where you can have a summer home or a winter hideright now — and to which you can eventually retire — in California, Colorado, Florida or some other favorite location? You can get that paradise for as little as ten dollars a year! Thousands of people, just like you, have already done so! It's all a part of the magic of America, this dream come true. The key to its realization lies in one sentence printed in Government Circular 1764 which reads, "The Act of June 1, 1938, as amended by the Act of July 14, 1945, authorizes the Secretary of the Interior . to lease or sell a tract . . . of any vacant, unreserved, surveyed public land." Government-owned land which fall into this category, chiefly in the western part of the United States, number into the hundreds of thousands of acres. Almost everybody has heard about public land, as it is called, but few realize that such land may be leased or purchased outright from the government, often at an almost negligible cost. Tracts of land all over the West, and in some cases in the South, have been surveyed by the government and classifield as suitable for private homes, camps health or convalescent resorts, and business locations. The government makes these lands available to people like you an d me because it wants these regions of the country put to use. Non-busineSs tracts — and some commercial sites — are leased to private citizens, usually for a period of three to five years, with option to re-lease or purchase the land after that time. In most cases, non-business tracts lease for a flat rental of five dollars per acre, per year. What steps should you follow to investigate or actually lease your private paradise? Let's follow Bill and Ruth Gardner Wh: lived in Dallas. All their lives they had wanted to have a summer home out West — a place they could go to when Bill's pension came through, a place Where they could live conifortably and happily on a very limited income. One day Bill heard about the -small land tracts which the government offers
ta citizens. Out of curiosity he wrote to the Bureau of Land Management in Washington, requesting information. In two weeks he received an easy-to-read government publication called "Facts On Small Tracts. Suddenly the dream began to show signs of coming true. This was something great! He read the bulletin carefully, then wrote for more information to the regional office of Land Management in San Francisco. Again he got a circular. After studying this second circular, Bill sat down and wrote the land agent in San Francisco, explaining what he wanted. Then when vacation time rolled around, he and his wife took a trip to California. At the land office in San Francisco they found out where the classified public lands were located in that state, and went to look at them. The land agent had Bill's letter on file, so he was able to suggest several sites to the south — just what they had been looking for. Almost at once Bill and Ruth found a beautiful three-acre tract not too far from Fresno. Excited, they went back to the land ,office and filled a lease form on the land. It was as simple as that! They returned home, and before the first norther hit Dallas they received word that the land was theirs. Today Bill and Ruth Gardner are living in southern California. Bill is retired, and their friends wonder how they can enjoy such luxury on Bill's modest pension. But the land costs the Gardners just fifteen dollars a year, and after they invested in the inexpensive small bungalow they built, their housing expenses practiCally stopped. If you wish, take another case. Harrry and Jean Sheldon, two younger marrieds, heard about the public land tracts. Harry was working in a, filling station in Pennsylvania and he had a fairly good income. Still, he wanted a business of his own. While visiting his wife's relatives in Idaho, Sheldon heard of the government classified land in that state, and he investigated it. He -found a tract, leased it, and with the help of a GI loan, put up his own gas station. He later bought the land from the government and today he has his own business. It's thriving, too, because the government has classified for commercial use many tracts along a new state highway, and it was one cf these tracts which the Sheldons purchased. You can do the same thing. Whether you want an inexpensive after-retirement home, a site for a small business of
your own, or just aspot for a vacation lodge, your citizenship entitles you to purchase or lease federal lands just as the Gardners or Sheldons did. And it's just that easy, too. The first step is to decide where you would like to locate. In Texas and the thirteen original colonies there is public land available. However, every state in the West and many states in the South, including Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas and Florida, have public lands which have been classified for sites. The government has divided the public lands into regions, and all claiths are handled through the regional land offices. After you have decided roughly upon the part of the country where you would like your home site or btrsiness location, write to the regional office. After you have decided roughly upon the part of the country where you would like your home site or business location, write to the regional office which covers that area. The regions and the addresses of their land 'offices are listed at the end of this article. Ask the regional office to send you a copy of Circular 1764, Part 257, Title 43, and drop a card to the Bureau of Land Management in Washington 25, D. C., asking for the free folder titled "Facts On Small Tracts." These two publications provide all the information you will need to start you toward your own private paradise. You will be surprised how easy it is to file for your land. You should know in advance, however, that there is a tendollar filing fee (which is returned to you if the tract you desire is not available.) Also, you cannot lease land blindly. The land office cannot mail you lists of vacant lands or plots Such information is on file at the regional land offices for study. You also must be acquainted with the land you wish to lease or buy. This means that you must go, to the region, locate the tract or plot, and with the assistance 'of the land agent, give a description of the area, as well as state your reasons for wanting it. This is merely routine information, and the land agent is of great help in assisting you; he has topological and surveying infermation available for you at the regional office. After you file your lease or purchase form, you've done all you have to do. What remains is for the wheels of the Bureau of Land Management to grind into action. And before you know it, as unbelieveable as it May seem to you, your (Continued on

A CHECK-UP MAY SAFE LIFE Not long ago, a middle-aged woman walked into the New England Center Hospital. "I know I'm perfectly OK,” she told the doctors. "I'd just like a check-up." That woman got a quick 45-minute examination. It cut into her shopping time a little, but she didn't mind. Later, her X-rays revealed a cancer as "big as a peach. She was operated on and is at home again living normally. That woman would have sworn she was healthy. But a friend of hers had received one of the fast examinations, so she decided to have one, too. By doing it, her life was saved. And in that simple story there's hope for millions of Americans—not for sick, bedridden persons, but for those who actually feel fine and are sure that they are perfectly healthy. For today many doctors are training their sights exclusively at "healthy" per5,ons in amazing screening programs to find hidden evidence of cancer, heart' trouble, diabetes, TB, syphilis and other less serious diseases. In Boston, the New England Center Hospital's Health Protection Clinic has screened thousands of persons who think they are "well." "Two groups, totalling 7:500 "well" persons, have been screened in a year-long program. Boston isn't alone. San Diego, San Jose, Oakland, and Los Angeles have also pioneered in screening-for-sickness research. And the same goes for Richmond, Atlanta, Birmingham, and Indianapolis. Usually, the programs are carried out under public and voluntary health agency sponsorship. What do the doctors hope to accomplish by screening-for-sickness? They want to discover diseases in their early stages so people will not be bedridden for years-or die prematurely. Once the disease is under control, the patient often can expect to return to normal living and hold down a job. And just as important, he does not become a burden to his family 'or to his community. So early detection of disease may save you money as well as a world of personal worry and pain. Under the direction of Dr. Vlado A. Getting, Commissioner of Health in Massaehusetts and Dr. Claire F.• Ryder, administrator of the Health Protection Clinic, here's what happened when the Boston program got under way: A day after the program was announced, clinic phone operators couldn't handle all the calls. Persons eligible for the screening examinations had to be "apparently well" and not under a doctor's care.
Examinations were free. Here's the most startling fact: Out of the first 2,600 who were given the examinations, more than 1,000 were found to have definite physical failings that could be treated by their family doctors. Those people thought they were "well." Not one was under his doctor's care. To find the disorders, the clinic staff had each patient answer a 222-question medical history quiz and undergo a 10to-20-minute examination. physical Chest X-rays were taken. Blood and urine were tested. Records of heart action and blood pressure were taken. Vision and hearing were tested. The cost of such screening to the clinic is low. The examination given each person was by no means the most elaborate possible—that would have taken longer than 45 minutes—but it provided information about the most vital organs of the body. After the examination, the findings were forwarded to each person's family doctor. As one of the most important cogs in the entire picture, the family doctor's task was then to follow up cn the screening results. Without the family doctor's follow-up, the screening would be of little value. If the screening tests showed indications of tuberculosis or any other disease, the family doctor's job was to try to verify the evidence. Not only were hundreds of vision and hearing defects found among those screened but there were two dozen cases of tuberculosis, 289 cases of heart disease, 2 cases of diabetes, many cases cf anemia, kidney disorders, syphilis and obesity. Eight dangerous cancer cases were confirmed. So doctors have proved that there are many more people sick than think they are. ) • 4 • ( LADIES FIRST
The tall, dignified man joined the crowd in front of a bargain counter in an attempt to get a very special pair of hose for his wife. He inched his way patiently, but was buffeted here and there by the, women, and made no progress. Suddenly he lowered his head, stretched out his arms, and t hen barged through the crowd. "Can't you act like a gentleman?" inquired a cold feminine voice at his elbow. "I've been acting like a gentleman for the past hour.", replied the man, still charging forward. "From now on I'm going to act like a lady."

A -"Selling Proposition? (By H. F. Boss) Recently a new salesman was asked, "Do you think you can sell life insurance?" And he replied, cocky and selfconfident, "Sure—I can sell any thing." Now don't misunderstand me, please --life insurance has to be sold.—no argument about that. People that walk up and ask you for it usually have been turned down by someone else. But life insurance is so much more than a selling proposition, so much greater and more wonderful than other things a man can sell to make a living. Let me give you an example. Some time ago a woman called on me about an office job. She was a widow and had two small children. She owned her home, free and clear. Well dressed, pleasant, happy, she carried an unmistakable air of courage and well-being. In the course of the interview I said to her, "I hope you won't mind my asking, but I would like to know how you have been able to get along so well by yourself and looking after those two fine children." Her answer has stayed with me. With a fine smile, she replied, "I don't mind a bit. You see, my husband was a great believer in life insurance. In fact he bought so much I thought it was silly, when we needed so many other things. But when he died I found out how right he was. He left us enough to pay off our mortgage and give us an income for a long time. I really don't know what we would have done without the life insurance. That's why I thought I would like to work with life insurance and help tell others about it. It was a godsend to us." There you have it. Someone has to die to get us all the way into the life insurance business, to make us realize how different it is, how almost sacred it is: Substitute in the lady's statement, in place of life insurance, a gas range, refrigerator, drapes, car or any other "selling proposition" and the difference stands forth in bold relief: "I don't know what we would have done without the new drapes —they were a godsend to us." Life insurance is different. It has to be sold, to be sure. But it also has to be loved. ) • 4 • ( In the smokeroom of the big hotel the Scot had been boring everyone with tales of the great deeds he had done. "Well, now," said an Englishman at last, "suppose you tell us something you can't do, and by Jove I'll undertake to do it myself." "Thank ye," replied th eScot, "I canna pay ma bill here."

TITICAS
Camp Chaffee, Arkansas ', Dear Editor: . What can we do to build up the interest , of our younger members? This question has been bothering local lodge offOcials and the Supreme Lodge officials for some time. In the old days the SPJST lodges sponsered dramatics clubs, dances, athletic clubs, and other forms of diversion. Members of all ages took an active part in the activities. During the last two decades with the development of the movies, radio, and television, the interest in dramatics has almost all been lost. School dances, elaborate dancing clubs, and 'the juke-box have taken most of the dances from the SPJST Halls, High School and College football, track, basketball and the countless other competitive sports have almost killed modern youth's interest in gymnastic acti.vities. These rapid changes have left the SPJST without a constructive youth program. I think that most of cur members realize the need for a good sound youth program. A program, to be really effective, would have to be set up on a statewide scale. This could prove very costly. However, I would like to suggest that the officials of the SPJST investigate what has been done by some of our large commercial organizations. I am going to mention a few of the organizations that I have contacted in my 4-H Club work and give you an idea about the youth programs that they carry on. Probably most of yGu have heard of the Sears, Roebuck Foundation. The Sears, Roebuck Foundation is sponsored by the Chicago Mail Order house. The'Foundation is well known in Texas for its "Pig Program." The program provides Texas Farm boys with good breeding stock and with competition in practical swine husbandry. The General Electric Company sponsors contests on the National, State, and Local level. These contests serve to acquaint farm youth with safe practical methods of using electricity on the farm The Thomas Willson Meat Packing Company sponsors meat animal demonstrations providing winners with trips to the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago each December. I could go on and on mentioning the countless cornmercial concerns that have sound youth programs in operation. I mentioned only the programs that dealt with 4-H club work, because of my past ,contact with them. Most of the above mentioned businesses take an active interest in the Boy and Girl Scouts, the Camp Fire Girls, The Future Farmer's of America and
Other youth groups. The Commercial concerns that I have mentioned are able to contribute large sums of money to their youth programs. The SPJST within its local lodges, has something more valuable to contribute —adult leadership and inspiration. All of our youth groups always have an urgent need for willing, competent adult leadership. The many youth programs that are set up can exist only if the older generations will take • an active hand in providing transportation to meetings, meeting places, refreshments, and adult supervision. The present 4-H Club Leaders, Scout Masters, and Den Mothers would welcome the cooperation of more civic minded adults. It is my firm belief that, through our Order, we could ally ourselves with some of the existing youth groups and build up an extensive yet inexpensive program that would be of much benefit to the SPJST as well as the young people. I believe that with a minimum of planning and discussion with the state directors of the major youth groups a very satisfactory SPJST sponsored youth program could be put into operation. I would like to hear the reactions of some of our members to the suggestions that I have made. Sincerely, yours, Roy E. Hranicky. ) • 4, DELICIOUS CHICKEN SUPPER

SMOKING AND LUNG CANCER The caption of this article May look alarming. It should be more accurately stated that a chain smoker may develop rung cancer. There is no alarm if you haVe just started smoking and do it With a degree of moderation, but if you haVe been at it for years, and more than ten - cigarettes a day, you better take a peep at the new findings by those who have studied excessive smoking.
scientific research must find cut. But one thing seems clear, there is more of , this cancer-causing agent in cigarette smoke than there is in the more powerfully scented wisps from cigars and pipes. Twice as many Americans — in proportion — smoke their way to cancer 'of the lung with cigarettes as with cigars, and pipes. Investigators theorize with good reason that cigarette smoke is inhaled in larger amounts — because a cigarette smoker inhales more frequently than cigar or pipe smoke. Or it may be that the dangerous factor is a product of burned paper. Either way, the cigarette is the major offender. Although this study proves almost without doubt that smoking and cancer of the lung are closely related, millions of smokers have little to fear. Even new when cancer of the lung kills More ithan ten thot,i3and Americans each year it must be remembered that only 52 per cent of all of the nation's citizens smoke. But bronchiogenic cancer is increasing rapidl y and if excessive smoking of prolonged duration is responsible, the number of lung cancer victims may rise before long to new and terrifying heights. For the most part these studies were limited to male smokers. If pessimistic predictions prove true, and ten years hence heavysmoking women add their numbers to the gruesome total, cancer of the lung may becOme a major cause of death. And suppose you have been smoking a Paek a day for the paSt fifteen years? What should you do to protect yourself? The answer is obvious, Reduce your smoking. Light smoking, less than ten cigarettes daily, is associated with very few lung cancers. Heavy smoking, from sixteen to thirty-five cigarettes daily, is followed by ten times as many bronchiogenic cancers as light smoking. 44, • ( BROTHERS and SISTERS, we want you' to have your Vestnik. As far back as 1912, medical men began to suspect that smoking had something to do with bronchiogenic cancer f::r inevitably it was a heavy smoker who died of cancer of the lung. As cigarette sales increased, lung cancer increased. By , 1946 the , Mortality rate had doubled, and among men past sixtyfive it had tripled. Then in May, 1950, th-e . Journal of the AmeriCan Medical ASsociation pUblished a study by two St .'Louis physicians who proved almost ciOnclusively that smoking and cancer of the lung went hand in hand. Their report, based on a comprehensive study of 684 cases of proven lung cancer, would make hair-graying reading', for the nation's chain smokers. Cigarette smoking, cigar smoking, and pine smoking were all evaluated. Light smokers, moderate smokers, and heavy snickers were all studied by groups, and always it was the hard-smoking cigarette addicts who led the list in cancer of the lung! In a total of 605 men being treated for lung cancer, 96 percent had been heavy smokers for more than twenty years. The fact that six times as many men suffer from cancer of the lung as women- is a mystery no longer. Few women haVe smoked heavily for twenty or thirty years. Time will supply the an&Wei' — will heavy smoking lead to increased bronchiogenic cancer among women as it has among men? In 1950, forty American women in every hundred were steady smokers. There is no danger that the next cigarette you light will plant the seed of cancer in your lung. Malignant tumors do not originate in that way. At first he complained bitterly. "Here I am, down and out, good for nothing—and there isn't a thing I can do abbut it!" But one day he saw the futility of comiplaining.. From some obscure and unsuspected reservoir of courage and initiative there came to him the challenge: `Or is there something you can do about it?" For hours Bill pondered. Then he called his wife and son. Soon he was lying across his bed with his arms and shoulderg free. Beneath him, spread out on a loW wooden box, were paints and brushes. Slowly, with great effort, the amateur artist sketched a hillside, a brook, a chimp of maples. As he worked he began to realize that the more vivid he made his objects the less pain he felt. A gorgeous picture began to emerge—grasseS turned more golden, on the hillside, the leaves took on the briliant autumn richness of Scarlet, orange, and russet. OVer all streamed the yellow rays of the sun, drenching the landscape with such dazzling brightness that its glow overSpread the room with its light and warmth. When the picture was finished, Bill's face beamed. The family gathered around. The neighbors trooped in, to marvel. How had Bill managed, out of pain and discomfort, to create so glorious a scene? Bill smiled. Suffering , disclwed to him a profound and heartening truth. Said he, "I guess when life gets. black enough; we've just naturally got to find some way of making our own light. We're seeing the old year out this week. For those of us who've held on to our Defense Bonds, it was a prosperous year indeed. Help make 1952 a prosperous year by joining the Payroll Savings Plan where you work or the Bond-A-Month Plan where you bank. This time next year you can say to yourself, "I now own U. S. Defense Bonds. I've saved all that money, and I've helped Uncle Sam with it, too. Am I lucky!" But it won't be luck at all, just the application of common sense.
