KDO ZAILIME NASE MISTA YL JSEM pied tYdnem ptitomen schuzi Tiskoveho vYborti. Takove osamele cestovani privadi alovela do dumave nalacly. Schuze Tiskoveho vYboru byla v sobotu, a schilze Hlavni fitadovny byla v pondeli. Mezitim, v nedeli, mel jsem nav gtevu jednoho znameho elena, ktereho ov gem nechci jmenovati. Prirozene, chytil mne u psaciho stroje, tedy pti redakeni praci. K otc ytene vYmene nahledn o spolkovYch nnech nebylo daleko. Upozornoval mne, ae velike obchodni korporace stale meni sve fitedniky, spravce a direktory, a povy guji takoye, kteti mall schopnosti.

On by chtel vern 4, dosloualt. Pied etrnacti lety men jsme tragickou vystrahu. Hlavni a vedouci paka v sttedne byla zlomena. Hlavni tajemnik odegel nahle, bez vYstrahy. Jednota mela to g testi, ae na uprazdnene misto nastou-

pil jeho syn, jeho nahradnik, jeho pomocnik, jeho prava ruka. Mame my dnes v nsttedi podobne nahradniky? Odpovedel, "My musime poeitati jen s domaci vfiiomoci. Odjinud ji nedostaneme." DruhSr vYstraanY ptipad meli jsme, kdya odegel redaktor Mondka.

Nutno tedy hledati jiny vYklad a ten tram poskytne srovnani s dinnosti inuau. MUSINGS OF THE EDITOR OUR GOVERNING BODY, the Supreme Lodge, holds its regular meetings once every three months. The first meeting of this quarter and this year was held on Monday, January 14, in Fayetteville. Since your editor was invited to come to the meeting and to make his own observation of the workings and the managing of the SPJST, a few remarks pertaining to the magnitude of details connected with the management may be appropriate, Our members should be more acquainted and better informed regarding the operation of the work at the headquarters. • • • THE NEW ITEMS GIVEN HERE should not be considered in the nature of an official report of the proceedings. Your editor gives you here only some of his personal opinions, reflections, and observation. As soon as he gets a copy of the minutes, he will select the more important items from the minutes of the meeting and have them published. * * * OUR MEMBERS ARE NO DOUBT ANXIOUS to learn about the progress that had been made in the past year in our membership drive. Our solicitors had written 1226 new aplications which passed the inspection, medical examination, and admitted that many new members. In comparing this number with the year of 1950, it was only three more applications, or expressed in comparing figurse, we had 1223 aplications in 1950, and 1226 applications in 1951. • ♦• THE NET GAIN OF LAST YEAR was far better. By net gain, it is meant the new business which remains on the books after all the losses in members due to death, lapses, etc., are deducted. In 1950, Nye had 1223 new aplications, but we lost 583 members. Thus we had a net gain of 640 members. In the past year, we had written 1226 aplications, and we lost 536 members. Our net gain in 1951 was 690 new members.

IN THIS CONNECTION, it would be interesting—and maybe profitable—to look into the causes of the lapses and ascertain the conditions responsible for losing nearly 44% of the number that we secure. Of course, this does not im-

ply that we lose that many from the new applicants or newly secured mem-1 bers. But the lapses are there just the same. The new business should be retained, and all efforts should be made to keep the new members. It takes at least three years before there begins any accumulation of reserves for a new member. ♦ ♦ SUPPOSE YOU ARE INSPECTING a new model of an automobile, and suppose an automobile dealer asked you: "Do you know the most important part of this new model?" Not being a mechanic, you wouldn't guess right. But his answer would be right to the point and it would give you a new insight. His reply could not be disputed. "The most important part of the car is the faulty part." So the most vital part in our membership drives is the part that does not work just right. That faulty part may be the unproportionate number of lapses and loses that we have. • • • THIS IS NOT INTENDED to be a criticism of our officers or our solicitors. It is merely a thought as it occurred to your editor while he is pecking his typewrite with one finger. But isn't it true that we take so much for granted that almost the only thing that registers with us is the thing that goes wrong? We seldom give a thought to our health as long as we feel good. But let a hanging fingernail get in our way, just let al tooth or an ear begin to ache, and howl tremendOusly conscious we become of that minor part of our body! So the most important part in the management of our Order is the part which begins to hurt or which causes us to feel some pain. ♦ • • THIS REMARK IS INTENDED to call the attention to the fact that the most important part in one's day work, or in the work of our Order, is the faulty part, and that it is our responsibility to correct it. Let this little remark be as a ceaseless guarding against the faults that may creep into the operation and management of our fraternal Order. .4 CONTRARY TO THE GENERAL EXPECTATION that we would get a large

number of willing co-workers who would be aiding in the new membership drive, the number of helpers was very scanty and unimpressive. Only fifty one coworkers were reported. It would 'be reasonable to expect at least one earnest member out of every ten, or to ,be far less optimistic, at least one good and willing worker out of a group of fifty. But the way it turned out, we can hardly locate one co-worker among five hundred members. That does not took :So flattering to the entire membership. * * PASSING OVER TO THE MORE OPTIMISTIC side of the picture, our double indemnity feature is paying good .:dividends., Since the year of 1946, we did not have a single loss due to an „accidental death. Some of our delegateS at the last convention did not favor the double indemnity feature, - fearing the many 'accidents and tragedies of the modern life, and they even struck but any mention of the double indemnity from our By-laws. • • IN COMPLIACNCE WITH OUR BYLAWS, the Supreme Lodge fornially(Rnnounced in the January meeting that the next convention of the SPJST will be held in Houston, Texas, beginningibn Monday, June 23, 1952. It may be a formal procedure, but in view of the fact that the arrangements for the convention had to be made as far back, as January, 1950, two years ago, this provision of the By-laws seems to be somewhat superfluous. Anyway, the .ciOnVetition begins on Monday, June 23, 1952, at nine in the morning. SINGE WE ARE ON THE SUB.fECT of convention, could it be possible.' to do:.•a bit of preliminary work? So far, there is only one committee working before the convention, the By-Laws committee. What prevents us from doing some extra thinking and planning before the actual date of the convention in order to speed up the costly meeting? Gould the credential papers of the delegates give advance information about the mileage of each delegate? Couldn't the Supreme Lodge work out some plan to finish the work of the convention in three. or fatir days? Let's do some thinking,

"NIGHT BEFORE-MAN NEXT DOOR" The men who are in the life insurance business constantly exchange their experiences within their own circles for the benefit of others. Here is a story of a man who had quit his job to become a life insurance solicitor, a life underwriter, and who was a complete failure until he discovered a formula that changed a failure into one of the best life insurance men. + After the first few days, the oontin-1 ual arid inevitable turn-downs give the neophyte in life insurance a bad case , of the: blues. At least, that happened in my case. I had moved from Iowa to Los Angeles I and, ,though I had ld insurance before, I had a feeling that I could do it. I was an enthusiastic buyer of life insurance and had 11 policies in nine different companies! I had become a life insurance convert, not only from the protection side, but even more because it was an automatic, painless, sure way to make myself I save some money as I went along. I was sure I could tell others how I , felt about insurance and get them to ' buy, 80 I quit my job in Cedar Rapids, sold our house and furniture, and my wife and I/got in the car and headed for the Golden West! We r'axrived in Los Angeles on a Saturday, rented an apartment in Hollywood on Sunday,- and I attended the first agency meeting I ever saw on Monday and started calling on prospects on Tuesday—the very next day. Since I was really enthusiastic, I was dumfounded when I hadn't sold anyone at the end of the first day. 'In fact, that first week, I made no sales. But the next week I registered with a small policy to a reporter on the Hollywood News. That gave me a real lift! The next week I again drew a blank, and before long I was almost a nervous wreck The third week I again Made a sale, and then for two or three weeks I managed' to get an application each week 'to stay in the App-a-Week Club. But then business got hard to get, I. began-to'wonder if I had been so smart to give up a good job and move to California' to sell insurance. I would lie awake at night and go through all the mental torture that most beginners experience! When I was offered several opportunities to teach in the Los Angeles school system', they were a real temptation. If it. hadn't been for my pride, I would have clone it too. But I hated to think what my friends back in Iowa would say

if they heard I had given up so soon! At just this juncture, when sure as the world I was headed out of the business, I had an experience which changed the whole path of my life. Reading one of the insurance journals, I ran into an article telling of a man who had been tremendously successful. Asked how he had done it, year in and year out, he replied that a major reason was that he followed a little rule: "THE NIGHT BEFORE AND THE MAN NEXT DOOR". He explained that he had discovered that often he . vionld start out the day with a pack of old. prospect cards and be very disoouraged even before he got underway. So he made a resolution that he wouldn't , perthit himself to go to bed at night until he had picked out the cards of the people he planned to call on the next day and had listed the names in proper. order on the back of. an envelope. He also thought of each - person and tried to imagine something interesting to say to each. That was the "night before" part of his formula. Then, he discovered that he let days slip by without new names and his prospect file became old and uninteresting. Then he grew afraid to call on new people. So he decided that he would Make it an iron-clad rule that, if he called on a man who was not in, lie would be obliged to call next door and meet someone that he had never seen before. This was the "man next door" part. He said that it became an interesting game and that, from that day on, his prospecting problem was solved, He automatically met three or four new men every day. I have often wondered. who this chap was! Little did he know what a profound. impression his simple little rule was to make on a young fellow in Los Angeles who was trying to get a start. After reading this article, I got out my prospect cards, took an envelope and listed the names in the order that I planned to see them the next day. Believe it or not, that was the first night that I got a decent night's sleep in the state of California. I went to bed feeling at peace, and eager for morning to come, so that could start down that list and beat the game of the day by seeing them all and trying to turn the calls into, sales talks and sales. If this sounds like a fairy story, it is nevertheless the absolute truth. I also gave a lot of thought to "the man next door" -part of his formula and decided I'd try it. The very next morning, my first call was on the manager of a

market who was out when I got there! So I followed the instruction of the little game. I went next door, to a store that handled unpainted furniture. The manager was an old man with a long white beard — obviously no prospect. Fortunately I thought fast enough to ask him if he knew of anyone I might talk with about an insured saving account. He replied that if I wanted to, I could go to the back of their store and talk to his painter! I sold that painter $5,000 and his assistant $2,500, right on the spot, and got the cash! These fellows were friendly, and after awhile, I felt I knew them well enough to ask how they had come to buy so quickly. "Well," said the older man, "last night, right in front of our store here, a boy on a bicycle was knocked down and killed by a street-car, and we agreed that when the next insurance man came along, we'd buy a policy!" From that day on, I never went to bed until I had listed the names of the men I planned to see the next day, in the exact order I expected to call on them. And from that day on, I made it a rule to meet "the man next door" when someone was not in when I called. I found that a good approach in such a case is to say, "I have noticed what an attractive place you have here and would like to meet the man responsible for it; my name is Bell, and I'm a life underwriter. Are you the manager?" From this point it is easy to get acquainted and come back at some later time for an interview. But that's not the wnole story either. In a group of very suCcessful men who follow both these rules, the men are quick to declare that they are two of the very most important factors in their success. Not long ago a chap brought in a case for $50,000 with a check for over $2,700 attached and said, "This case is a direct and positive result of one of my bum prospect's being out! I had to call next door, and that's how I met this man." Psychologically it is very hard for most men to do much cold canvassing. But if we make a game of "going next door" two or three times a day, pass a compliment to the manager and get acquainted, we'll find it is a pleasant and thrilling adventure. And our prospect well will never run Hugh S. Bell. ) 4 64 4 ( Life Insurance — the only kihd of an estato that can be created in a hurry. Travelers Protection.

FROM THE PEG TO THE NAIL The average man doesn't stop to think that even the old-fashioned nail has an interesting history marked by many Steps of improvements. Eons ago a prehistoric man—an exceptionally bright one--hammered the first woden peg into a piece of wood, and said, "This is the greatest thing until the invention of the wheel!" And no doubt he was right. His peg may have fastened the wheel on the axle hub of a crude wagon. Today the peg is called the nail. But the only resemblance between the original peg and the modern nail is the point. The head and shank of the present-day product are highly technidal parts that do much more than hold hold a couple of board s' together. Manufacturers design them after careful study of their end uses. Other fasteners today are giving nails competition. That's why Independent Nail and Packing Co., Bridgewater, Mass., has asigned a development project to the research foundation of Virginia Polytechnic Institute. The project won't come up with anything radically new. But it should produce improvements that give the nail a stronger position in the market. It's a big market; current production runs close to 1 million tons a year, spread among 68 manufacturers. Lately some manufacturers have been cutting down the number of standard types, which is a goOd sign that the nail has become a more versatile fastener. One big eastern manufacturer has cut its inventory from 1,100 types to 120. Despite recent improvements the old sizes and shapes are still favorites among customers. About 95 percent of the 1 million tons of nails produced annually are, sizes and shapes that were in use 25 years ago. The materials with which a nail will be used pretty much determine its design. Wood, upholstery, or composition building board each calls for its own special kind of head and shank. Metals such as brass, aluminum, or titanium that go into nails give them lightness, resist corrosion, and prevent discoloration of the materials that they touch. To make a stronger fastener, Independent's project emphasizes nails that have grooved (or threaded) shanks. A heliCal groove has a gradual pitch that :pirals around the shank. And an annular one is a sreies of individual circles spaced along the length of the nail. With the pitched groove a nail turns as it is driven, displaces the wood fibers. and forms a thread in the wood. When the circular groove goes into wood, the wood fibers push into the grooves like

tiny wedges to held the nail tightly in place. Actually there is nothing new about the grooved nail. It's been around for a long time. But slight modifications of the groove itself have meant big improvements in the nail as a fastener. Independent credits these design' changes for the switch in many industries from the plain shank nail to the grooved jOb. The shoe industry has been one of the big leaders in replacing the old type with the new in attaching heels to ladies shoes. Auto makers use the grooved nail almost exclusively for fastening upholstery linings to body frames. And lately furniture manufacturers have been considering the nail as a substitute for wood screws, which are about 25 percent more expensive. To make the nail even more competitive with the screw, manufacturers have been using special steels and nonferrous metals to give their products a combination of lightness and corrosion resistance. Although a bit more expensive than the ordinary nail, aluminum types have recently cornered a healthy market in the building trades because they won't corrode and streak the sides of buildings. Stainless steels go into nails used in contact with corrrosive chemicals in the processing and metalworking industries. One company has even gone so far as to manufacture an experimental batch of nails from titanium metal with an eye to making the nail still more resistant to chemical attack. The first nail makers in America never dreamed of the refinements. The industry started around the time that the pilgrims stepped ashore at Plymouth. For most colonial families nail-making was a part-time job, an accepted part of home life. The head of a family bought or bartered bar iron from a nearby ironworks, forged it into sheets of required thickness, and then took it to a slitting mill where it was cut into nail rods. At home the family hammered the rods into nails by hand till far into the night. Economically, the nail was a hat potato in the colonies. Slitting mills in England saw America as a new and expanding outlet for their products. It was a seller's market. But the English were stuck with long supply lines, while New England nail makers were right in the middle of the market. The competition from the colonials was so rough that the English passed laws forbidding the operation of slitting mills in America. Enforcing the act was another matter. A-

merican slitting mills mushroomed like moonshine stills in Prohibition. When the westward migration started, departing pioneers often burned their building, sifted the nails from the ashes, and took them along. Handmade production fell far behind, providing a new spur for Yankee inventive genius. In 1759 Jacob Perkins of Newburyport, Mass., developed the first nail-making machine. This, and others like it. cut and headed nails directly from . sheet iron. The industry migrated westward along with the pioneers and tempOrarily settled itself in Wheeling, W. Va., which became known as "The Nail City." There the nail had its ups and downs. For years manufacturers turned out nails without much thought about their metallurgical structure. But one of them, Norton, Bailey and Co., learned to cut sheets into pieces with the grain of the metal parallel to the length of the nail. Wheelin's nails were riding. the crest of the wave in the middle of the 19th Century. Then the Panic of 1873 sent nail prices for a loop. When business picked up, the bigger firms failed to strengthen their position. Instead, smaller companies in other areas did the expanding. Besides economic conditions, technology also helped to knock Wheeling off the top of the totem pole. The nail maker, and the iron puddler whose furnace supplied the raw materials, were the labor aristocrats of their day. Both trades were carefully guarded secrets. Although the nail was close to mass production, the machine was still crude enough to require considerable skill on the part of its operator. The chance of error was so great that adjustments made by the worker determined the quality of the product. To make the trade even more aristocratic, nail makers kept their craft within their families, passing the tricks of the trade from father to son. Into this closed garden came the Bessemer converter and the wirenail machine, almost simutaneously in the 1860's More or less supplementing each other, they put the nail into actual mass production. The converter, which made more and better metal for nails, didn't require the artistry that the pudler needed to tend their iron furnaces. Rather than shift to the new trade, the pudlers went on a prolonged strike to pretect their high wages — about $20 per day in today's dollars. By the time the strike was 'set(Continued on page 23.)

LETTERS Houston, Texas HOUSTON ACTIVITIES

From all indications, after so long, it is time for the CZECH CLASS "to go to Press." Since the second semester took up in September 1951, under Dr. J. M. Skrivanek, we have been progressing at an interesting rate of speed, and while all of us feel we have absorbed something in our feeble ways we have also learned to realize that the Czech language, like any other, is only beautiful when spoken and used correctly. The chances of ever mastering it are remote for most of us, however, the interest is obvious as we have already found. Not only is the Czech language taught in Texas colleges ands universities, it is also taught in public high schools. It came to our attention some time ago that it was taught at the Crosby High School under Mr. Jerry Prochazka. ReCently he suggested bringing his class to Houston to visit the University of Houston and particularly cur class. We were extremely delighted with the announceMent and our class responded to this cordial gesture on the part of Mr. Prochazka. Dr. Skrivanek was likewise highly pleased as the thought seemed to strengthen the bond in the common cause. When our guests made their appearance on the evening of January 9th, they • found us in the advanced section of the text book, but they readily took part with us and seemed to enjoy the brief fifteen minutes usually allotted to folks songs. This never fails to be an entertaining period of the evening. ''Refreshments made up of sandwiches, Cookies, cakes, coffee and soft drinks were served after this, and the remaining part of the evening was taken up in going through the lodge building and getting acquainted. We hope to be able to repay, this visit from our neighboring class of Crosby High; Mr. Prochazka is an ambitious young man who studied Czech under Dr. Skrivanek at the University of Houston. They both point with pride to this fact and it would be difficult to decide who was enjoying the benefits and satisfaction thercfmn most. At any rate, this is one of those nice things that happen to people occasionally and we are all happy that both find this so pleas-ing. Although he was born in Idaho, Mr. ,Prochazka suggested that he has lived in Texas long enough to feel like a Texan. Quite incidentally, Mr. S. Valcik, the editor of the Vestnik, surprised us when

he presented another guest. Mr. Milo Luka is in the city to give a concert performance under the auspices of Mrs. Edna W. Saunders, the well known impresario of Houston. It is our understanding that Mr. Luka, a baritone artist, is a native of Prague, Czechoslovakia, and is in this country on a concert tour. He is scheduled to make an appearance at the Music Hall, Sunday. February 17th, at 4 p. m. This date should be remembered aS he promised to devote a portion of his repertoire to Czech opera arias and folk songs. You have a delightful afternoon in store for you. Sincerely, Naomi Kostomlatsky ) 44, LODGE FOKROK HOUSTONU NO 88 It's playtime again and the Dramatic Club of Lodge Pokrok is busy with re hearsals for the play, "Kdy2 Olovek Zdedi Milian", which will be presented on the 10th of February at 4 p. m. It is an excellent comedy and has a very good moral to it. Those taking part in the play are: Joe Anton, Mary Johnson, Karel Matejka, Marie Rezek, Maxine Stavinoha, Naomi Kostomlatsky. Bill Rezek, Rudy Sefcik, Tim Kostomlatsky and Jerry Ermis — all very good players. In December, our Birthday Club celebrated the birthdays of Estelle Kelley, May Belle Schutte and Agnes Burl. They were asked to sing Jingle Bells for the rest of the ladies. Reports for the year were read and the election held. Our president, Birdie Hilsher, and our secretary-treasurer, Irene Slovacek went in by acclamation — also the reporters, Anna Kostomlatska and Harriette Earl. The General Planning Committee now consists of the following members: Albina Drawe, Estelle Kelley, Irene Slova cek, Frances Olexa. Birdie Hilsher, Harriette Earl, Evelyn Roeder, Annie Vala, Louise Kadlecek, Helen Schnell, Ara Skra banek, Anna Elzner, Marie Rezek and Marie Kahanek. We had 5 free dinners in 1951.. Mr. Alfred Hilsher, our vice-president had a birthday in December also, so the Birthday Club ladies presented him with a nice gift since he never forgets them with a Thanksgiving dinner. A little Xmas Party was held after the dinner. Frances Walla brought and donated a beautiful Xmas tree, Maxine Stavinol a. donated home-made fruit cocktail, Estelle Kelley donated some long-stemmed pink roses, which she grew in her garden, Mrs. Burl donated a home-grown flower arrangement and last but not least Mr. Anton brought the ladies a bottle of rum for their coffee, and a box of chocolates for their sweet tooth. Visitors were: Daisy Drab Mildred Zimerman, Helen Valcik, Mary Jane Burl,

Barbara Hanzlik and Annie Vrla. In January, we celebrated the birthdays of Frances Chalppnik, Alma Gaudin and Evelyn Roeder. They all received many beautiful gifts. The kitchen committee turned out a wonderful meal--: fresh pork ribs and sauerkraut macaroni with cheese, cookies and coffee, and candy and rum, which was donated by Mr'. Anton. Mrs. Helen Valcik was brought into our-club as a member. Now for the birthdays in February—Mary Rubach, Lillie Pryor, Frances Dvorak and Lucy Sostak. It is also Mrs. Sostak's wedding anniversary, so she'll have a double celebration. Harriette Earl. —.) • • ( •• HVEZDA SVOBODY LODGE NO. 87

Sometimes she's ratty as all get-out in old pants and a man's shirt, with her hair wild. Next time she's dolled up fit to kill. You never know what to expect!" Girls, take a tip from this. Here's a middle-aged woman who has the boys in the garage in a tizzy. How? By variety. Variety is still the spice of life, and don't let any of the pokerfaced, perfectly groomed, perfectly mannered, charm-school girls tell you different. Variety — a switch, a quick change of pace --- mystery! These are women's wiles. How to Make Him W ant a Rated Policy Condensed from National Messenger Here are some pointers on how you/ can best handle the placing of a policy which comes back with a rating. If your prospect has indicated that there is any question regarding his in'surability, take advantage of the opportunity and submit a preliminary inquiry to the home office. If the rating comes as a surprise, and if you feel it will also surprise the prospect, wait a day or two before seeing him. Do not rush into a substandard delivery interview unprepared and risk the chance of misunderstanding and possible failure to place the policy. Build up your story for your client. Go over the photostat of the medical carefully and see the details of your applicant's medical history. ,Talk the matter over with your general agent, the agency supervisor, or an experienced fellow salesman. If your agency owns a copy of Dingman's "Risk Appraisal," check up on his history and learn the real significance of it. Using your head like this will often pay off. The delivery of the policy will be much easier and your chances of making a real friend and a strong center of influence out of your insured will be greatly enhanced. Write the home office for additional information on the case, if necessary. Occasionally it is possible for us to learn more about the details of why the rating was necessary. Not long ago, a heavily rated case was placed without any apparent difficulty because a smart underwriter secured all the facts possible surrounding the reasons for the rating. He told us that without the additional information he had felt unprepared to discuss the case intelligently and, frankly, had just about concluded it would be impossible for him to deliver the policy. Whatever you do, build up your story on a sound factual and motivating basis. It is much easier to reason with a person when you can deal in facts. An applicant who is substandard phy sically can be motivated into a much more realistic recognition of his personal situation if you impress on him the greatly increased need for protection in his case, as contrasted with someone who enjoys excellent health and who can secure insurance readily. Knowing his personal and family situation as well as you do, you are in an ideal position to point out to an applicant who is stubbornly resisting the acceptance of a rated policy all the positive benefits that this new insurance will

mean to his family. his busbies or his creditors in event the unexpected should occur. Strong motivation at this point is tremendously valuable, and its importance should never be overlooked. If his policy has been issued substandard because of a medical history which indicates no permanent impairment sell him the idea that this sale is only the beginning of your service. Impress him that you really and sincerely want to work with him in an effort to have the rating reduced or eliminated in later years. Most important of all, let's be sure that we really follow through with these promises. It is one thing to place a substandard policy and collect the premium, but it is something else to do this and make the carefully planned follow-through during future years. This later step is extremely valuable in successfully impressing upon your client your real desire to furnish maximum help in a reduction or removal of his rating, where such is possible. Successful men tell us that this is one of the real differences between the gardenvariety salesman and the man who, suecessfully practices the art. • 4 • ( HAIR-WAVE ACCIDENT Thousands of women use home permanent wave preparations with no other consequence than an increase in beauty, possibly transient. In very rare instances, however, a woman may be abnormally sensitive to certain ingredients of home-wave sets, An exceptional case is reported by Dr. Joseph Sataoff and pr. John F. Wilson in the Journal of the American Medical Association. A woman who had used a popular home-wave product with satisfaction on previous occasions was giving herself ,a permanent. Some of the neutralizer used to arrest action of the waving lotion cidentally ran into the canal of her left ear. She felt a burning sensation, flushed the ear with water, but crackling sounds and a feeling of fullness remained. Nekt day the doctors found that her left ear drum had been perforated, probably by erosive action of the chemical. Reactions to home-wave preparations are extremely rare but the doctors think that directions should carry a warning to protect eyes and ears from solutions. ) 4, • ( Try praising your wife, mister. It may frighten her at first, or even arouse' suspicion. But it will certainly dispel' any resentment.

ARE YOU A GOOD CITIZEN? The question may come up—sometiMes. Here is a simple method to test yourself and find out. Are you a good citizen? You can't answer that question yer or no, of course. But you can get a pretty good idea by taking a little test. If you have the courage, try it. Then if you want some fun, try it on a few of your friends. It may turn out that your neighbor who complains the loudest : about goings-on in Washington is the fellow who did not vote in the last election. And the lady who is so worried about education in Mississippi may turn out to be the very person who has never bothered to join the parent-teacher association in her own home town. The Most you can possibly score do the test • will be 115 points. But don't let that worry you. If you get over 50, you can consider that as a citizen you are better than average. 1. Did you vote in the last national election (10 points if yes) 2. Did you' vote in the state or local election? (10 points) 3. Are you enrolled in a political party? (5 points) 4. Have yo done any work in the party (5 points) Are you an active member of any civic grotip such as, the following? League of Women Voters volunteer fire department g. chUrch board or women's aXili ary h. Boy or Girl Scouts or Boys' Club 6. Who are your senators and representative? (5 points) 10. Do you know how he voted on any single piece of legislation in the last session? (10 points)

1.. How many of the famous "rights" guaranteed the people in the Bill of Rights can you name? (1 point for each) 12. (5 points) 13 Do you know what form of local government you have county Commission, city council, county manager, etc.? (5 points) 14. Do you know how your school board is selected? (5 points) 15. Have you seriously discussed any local (not national) political issue with anyone in the past two weeks?(5 points) Total

If your notice carefully, your active participation in any fraternal and benevolent organization, such , ,as: our SPJST, gives you also 10 points. That should put you over the desired 50 points easily, if you are an active member. CE FOR BURNS

Fifty meMbers of the crew of a Navy vessel were severely burned by explosion of gasoline during enemy attack. Standard treatment was given but medical supplies were soon exhausted. As an emergency Measure, packs containing crushed ice were applied to the burned areas. Shock and pain were immediately relieved and the patients had a sense of wellbeing. Crushed ice proved superior to morphine in easing the pain of burns. Dr. S. E. Flynn, who describes the crushed-ice treatment in California Medicine, observes that in case of an atomic bomb attack, when physicians using standard methods could not cope with thousands of seriously burned peel-. ple, ice packs should be seriously considered. •( ) BROTHERS and SISTERS, we want you, to have your Vestnik. For Want of a Will This subject has heen. brought to the attention of our"members a number of times. It still remains a vital subeet., For that reason, we reprint here an observation of certain life insurance underwriter. Back when radio was just becomming a busineSs I called on a young man who was winding up his first year as a radio, dealer: He was doing a good jOb, too, and agreed that he should have about $8,000 more life insurance for the' protection of his wife and two small children. But after the examination the doctor told me that the man's heart wouldn't last five years pr o b a b I y wouldn't even last one year. It was a tragic thing,:but that young man's wife took it wonderfully. . And furthermore, she turned out, to be a good business woman.. She hired a housekeeper, took over the store, and proeeeded_to beat even her. business record.. I used to drop by occasionally, and the last time I saw him before he died he said, "You.cant imagine what a great relief it is to me to know that Inez and the kids are probably better off than they'd have been if I'd gone along to a ripe old age." I agreed with him — Inez was' a born business woman. In fact, she was right in the midst of consolidating the stock 'of two comPotilors she had bought out, floating a. sizable loan at the .bank, and making extensive alterations in a new store they had leased. A few days later, my young friend died. He left no will. And then tragedy really struck. The law in our state provided that since he had no will, Inez would get one-third of the estate and each of the children a third. The court was friendly enough. but it had no choice in the matter. "Either you buy the children's two-thirds interest in the businesS, or it must be sold to someone elSe. Their inheritance must be invested in securities legal for minors," the Judge told Inez. You can imagine how little the business brought at a forced sale. HoweVer, Inez still had a job. She worked for the people who bought the business. Since then it has been. , difficult for a, prospect to get •away from me . without our checking" on his will. And it is surprising how many men see a real and immediate need for life insurance once, they do some straight thinking about wills!—The Columbian. oe Railroads move a ton of freight one mile on two ounces of coal, or a tea-, spconful of oil if burned in a Diesel eru.' gine.
