Byla to • nucena navgteva a byla zru gena. Kaiderau byla ponechana libovale. V obtanskern tivote je tomu podobne. — °bean neni nucen jiti k volbe, nemusi chodit do schazi k vali lepgim gkolam, projektovanYm cestam, zavedeni vodovodu a kanalisace, nemusi ani deti posilat do vy ggi Skoly, nemusi brat tadny glen na, nieem, kdyt nechce. Ad nage stanovy ponechavaji domacim tadam hodne volnosti ohledne fizeni svych domacich zaletitosti, pravidla a regulate ohledne konani a navgtevovani schazi jsou at doposud zfetelna a jasna. Schtze se konaji nejm.ene jednou mesiene. Z povinne nav gtevy schuzi jsou jmuty elenkyne.
Dobre elenstvi zna.mena. zapornenouti svYch osobnich hod, sveho egotismu, totit naklonnosti staved vgude do poptedi vlastni ja, a splynouti se skupinu,, s fadem, dobrovolne a die pfedpisa, ktere jsme si sami upravili. Asi hodne delegatu by nep •ijelo. Motna, na mnoha, mistech by to prospelo. Sjezd by ale mel jakost a ne mnotstvi. Mel by delegaty, kteti jsou einnYmi eleny doma, dvanact mesica do roka, od sjezdu do sjezdu.

Ano, bratte redaktore, v ten Cas, kdy nekteti, jak se jim tikalo, "Evropeaci", ptigli sem do Wesley, netrvalo to cllouho, co byli eleni nagi Jednoty. Nevzalo to tak mnoho a gitaeni prate. MUSINGS OF THE EDITOR THIS COMING SATURDAY, nine selected men will meet in West, Texas, to do • some important planning and thinking. The nine men, all members of the SPJST and all of them experienced in the fraternal work, were selected four years ago to function as our pre-convention By-laws Committee.
•
•
BY A CLAUSE IN OUR BY-LAWS, none of the nine men, is an officer of the Supreme Lodge or in any way connected with the headqaurters. Whether or not this arrangement is a wise one, may be debated and both sides of the argument would have some merits. At present, the By-laws Committee is represented by Brother: George E. Kacir, of West, as chairman; and Frank B. Steiner, of Dallas, as secretary; then, in alphabetical order, James H. Barina, of Smithville; F. E. Hejl, of Temple; Frank Hiozek, Sr., of Blessing; Eng. Jelinek, of Granger; Jos. N. Morris, of Sweet Home; Frank J. Olexa, of Houston; and Jos. Slavik, of Cameron. • • THESE NINE MEN will ,meet to consider all the recommendations and suggestions that have been made for the purpose to change and improve the existing articles of the By-laws. Every suggestion, idea or proposal will be given a thorough and courteous consideration. Those suggestions which will be found by these nine men to be rational, sound, helpful, practical, and beneficial for the entire SPJST, will be properly arranged and published in the Vestnik.
•
•
THIS COMMITTEE ANNOUNCED, through its chairman and secretary, as far back as September, 1951, that suggestions and recommendations should be sent either to the secretary of the By-laws Committee or be published in the Vestnik. As we understand the purpose of all this preparation far ahead of the convention, the Committee wanted to give everybody ample time— five months, to be specific—to come up with ideas and recommendation, and four additional months for debate and discussion of the new articles and changes.
ALL OF THIS APPEARS to be a slow, Committee would like to wind up the tedious, dragging procedure—five months business of collecting new ideas' withfor suggestions and four months for dis- in next five months; that all this was cussion. ANNA, THE FAMILY BUILDER One of our SPJST sisters sent us this story about a housemaid who at last found what she sought. The story was written . by Frances Newton and clipped from Everywoman Magazine. We had to shorten the story.—Editor. My name is Anna," she said quietly. I looked at the wisp of a woman standing in the 'doorway. "Are'. you strong?" I asked doubtfully. "My apartment needs a heavy cleaning. Do you a think you can do the work?" Anna smiled. "I have been strong for 66 years," she saidt: "Sometimes my feets hurt, that, is all." The day before I had visited a domestic agency. "I must have help," I said,' "but I'm sick of frowsy women who charge a dollar an hour for sloppy, inefficient service." The manager was an old friend. "I'll do my best to send you someone in the morning." The Morning brought me Anna, soon to be known as "Anna; the Indomitable." I showed her over the apartment and retired to my study. A couple of hours later I found her polishing the living room floor on her hands and knees. "Why make the work so hard?" I protested, "There's a mechanical buffer in the kitchen. It's a much easier way to do the floor." "This is how I work, lady, and how 1 expect to go on working," retorted Anna. "I have to please you, but I have to please myself, too. The good God gave us better tools than any yet invented: turps, a bit of an old rag, and plenty of elbow grease to get into the smallest corners." She waved the "bit of an old rag" defiently. "Look at the floor," she commanded, "It stands for what I've tried to :teach my children—labor can't afford to be half-hearted; only the best will do." I looked down at the floor. It didn't just shine. It sparkled as did the strong proud, little wisp of gray-haired woman who had made it so. For more than five years Anna cleaned, washed, and cooked for me. On more than one occasion she nursed me. As, a cook she was better than average; as a waitress, almost unbelievable. She was an exquisite needlewoman. She was opinionated and self-willed but the only thing she ever complained of was her hurting "feets." Yet these are not the things for which I most remember Anna. She was an alien and so was I. She had come from Hungary many years ago and I, at a later
date, from Canada. This bond permitted Anna to scold me, to reveal the radiant faith and courage she had inside her, and to give me a deeper understandingi of America.

For more than two years she worked as a cook-housemaid, living in, visiting her girls one week and her boys the next. At the end of that time she had saved $500, and two of the boys were old enough to earn a little money selling papers and running messages. On this slim basis Anna bravely moved into a cold water flat and gathered her brood around her. "I thought my troubles were all over," she told me, "but they were just beginning. The children were growing up fast and they needed more than food and clothing and a place to sleep. I was away working every day, and every day they had to come back to an empty home where there was no one waiting for them and no one to tell them what to do or make them do it. "It was no wonder they liked nothing but playing in the streets, even though it was very bad for them. Yet they were good children and no worse than children always are. Suddenly I saw what the trouble was. I was trying to make a home for them but destroying it by my absence. I had to begin all over some different way." Indomitable Anna! She took the oldest girl with her to work and began to train her. Mistress had no objection to extra service and after a little Anna was able to get off earlier , each day so that she could devote more time to the other children. For awhile everything seemed better. Then the daughter flared up in unexpected rebellion. "I won't have anyone calling me a servant," she stormed. . "Why not?" demanded Anna: "What's wrong with a servant?" "Everything!" The girl burst into tears. "I'm an American and servants are lower-class people which Americans are not. I won't be called a servant; it's ting." humiliating." Anna's eyes flashed when she told me her reply. "We're all servants of one another. Christ Served the Lord, the President in the White House is the servant of the people. Why should you find it humiliating to do the same as they? Can't you see that we all must serve one another, lean on one another, depend on one another?" With a courage that I could but dimly comprehend, she had kept her children together until each in turn was old enough to begin working. When that time came, her boys presented little trouble but each of the girls wanted a white-collar job rather than the kind of work her mother did. Add always
vt ST IX— WEST, TEXAS Anna gave the same counsel. Through hard times and good, through war sand depression, she had always found some kind of employment. Anna was 66 when she came to me and more than 70 when she left. The children had long wanted her to stop working but she always refused. "I cannot stop," she said. "My hands have gone so long that now it is too late." That was the explanation she gave, but I am sure that she worked to have money to buy presents for her grandchildren. Every birthday was celebrated with rich pastries made in my kitchen I knew about each celebration, but two stand out ipore than the others. One spring evening before the old war ended Anna told me she would not be in the next day. The day off was spent in a naturalization ceremony. "I went down with all my children and said the right words -before the judge. It never seemed to matter much before, but with two sons in the Army I think maybe I should be rightly an American," she said. The other great occasion came after the war when her youngest boy used his GI bonus to buy a small radio-andhardware store in the suburbs and to get married. Anna gave the young couple an innerspring mattres for a wedding present. "It was so beautiful", she cried. "The American Legion held a parade and my son carried the flag in the procession, and when they came to his new store, there was my son's name spelled out in big letters, and the windows were all filled • with shining pots and pans and radios and electrical toasters. And then the post commander made my son a speech of welcome and wished him success in his new business." Anna waved a bit of an old rag triumphantly. "Now, I am the mother of an American businessman," she said. "Nowhere but in America could such a thing happen and nowhere but in America could a working man come to own his own store and sleep on an innerspring mattress. Nowhere but in America." So the promises made by a steamship agent in a Hungarian village almost 50 years before were fulfilled. It was well they were. One morning not long after, I discovered Anna sitting in the foyer of the apartment. She had come in some time earlier but her shoes and galoshes were still on the flood beside her. She was crying. "My feets hurt," she whispered. "My feets hurt. I can no more." Anna's day was clone. Writing about Anna brings her into sharper focus than when she was my

THE HISTORY OF SEWING A. long, story it is, the tale of textiles and thread, of needles and thimbles, of patterns and fashions, for since the garden of Eden folks have been making clothes out of about everything from fig ;leaves to test-tube fabrics. How to hold the various materials together in an efficient manned and at the same time make them hang well in a comely and appealing way is an art and science. And becati ge sewing is an artistic science, mastered only after much study and practice, it is not surprising that few women are qualified to make their own' clothes. More might be encouraged to do so if they knew the basic fundamentals, the joy and pleasure it can bring, and romantic history associated with sewing. Like everything else the science of sewing has undergone many revolutionary changes , during the past several thcusand years. There was a time when plant leaves and animal skins provided practically all the clothing that was "Used. Then came the discovery of fibers, animal, vegetable, and, very recently, chemical fibers. The ancient Egyptians were the first to make linen out of flax. 'The Babylonians of old spun wool into cloth. The use of cotton originated in : the antiquity of India at a date older than the historical records of that country. The silk worms have been exploited by the Chinese from time immemorial. In the nineteenth century John Mercer learned how to treat cotton with Chemicals to turn out "mercerized" fabrics. Several synthetic substances have come from the chemists' workshops in this twentieth century and have proved themselves useful materials for cloth:-ing for even the royalty of society.. •Rayon became a substitute for silk. Nyion, made from the basic compounds of •coal,. air and water, in many ways is superior to rayon. Orlon has the mixed characteristics of both silk and wool. Vicara, from corn; boasts of having the feeling of cashmere. In other materials are found the elements of casein and silica. Chemical research has also made certain textiles mothproof, mildew-proof, fireproof, Waterproof, wrinkleprcof, and even shrinkproof. Parrallel with the history of textiles, is that of the tools and machines by which fabrics are made. The most prim-I itive needles were constructed out of fishbone, ivory and thorns. Later better needles were formed out of gold and silver and bronze. Whether it is true: that the Chinese of old were the first to use steel needles, modern steel needles. began to be turned out in quantity in
Germany in the fourteenth century. England learned the secret two hundred years later. Patents on mechanical sewing machines began appearing at the close of the eighteenth century, but it was another fifty years or more before practical sewing machines were placed on the market. "Thumb-bells," at first made of leather and later of tone and gold and silver, are said to have been invented in Holland about the year 1100. These little belishaped sewing accessories were so called because originally they were worn on the thumb. Nowadays the thimble is worn on the middle or second finger, and is still a great aid to the speed, efficiency and the pleasure of sewing. Progress in mechanical cloth-making and sewing devices also was rather slow. At first fibers were twisted into threads by hand. Then the Egyptions made a distaff on 'which to hold the fibers and a spindle on which to wind them. But not until the sixteenth century did the use of the spinning wheel, an invention of India, spread across Europe. The original hand looms later became semiautomatic contrivances, and then weaving was greatly speeded up with the invention of the flying shuttle in the year 1738. Thereafter, the heavy loam, the spinning frame, the spinning. jenny, and the cotton gin, each in turn became a landmark of progress in the production of fabrics. Today ingenious machines turn out all kinds of textiles, and can do about everything but think. Consequently, sewing begins nowadays, not with spinning and weaving, but with finished materials in ten thousand varieties. In olden times when the costume consisted of flowing yardage of cloth draped about the body, the only fastener needed was a pin or two. Many of these took on elaborate forms, like the modern brooch, and thus served as ornaments as well as fasteners. For a time in the Middle Ages string lacings d r a:w n through eyelets like shoelaces were popular for holding garments together. Buttons—all sizes, shapes and designs— then came into general use and have continued to this day as the most 'common means of closing up the fronts of shirts, blouses, coats, etc. It has been only during the last hundred years that such contrivances as snaps, hooks, and the now popular slide fastener, or "zipper", were invented, as well as that allimportant invention, the common safety pin. And speaking of devices for holding clothes together and in place, one
should not overlook the seamsteress" thousands of stitches. These may be classified as running stitches, back stitches, slip stitches, catch stitches, or as overcasting, basting or hemming stitches. Each is of a porticular design and serves a particular function. Each is made with a particular twist of the wrist, thrust of the needle, or maneuver of the hands or material. Just when each was first employed is not known, but until the beginner learns when and where to use these various stitches, and how to make them with speed and skill, she should not go on to the more important and difficult tasks of designing, pattern-making and fashioning of garments out of raw fabric. Paper patterns, so universally used today, have not always been available as a dressmaker's ready assistant. There was a time when someone first stumbled on to the clever idea of first making a pattern, and than from the pattern making the garment. It is believed that the first patterns were crude carvings out of heavy stones. Later on thin wood was used and still later cardboard patterns were made. In 1863 the first commercial patterns, named Butterick after their maker, were placed on the market. Then along came the improved McCall patterns . Vogue entered the pattern business, followed by the famous Simplicity and Advance patterns. Altogether, each year, nearly a hundred million sewing patterns are sold. • &•( FARLEY'S MEMORY SECRET
It is trua that I have a pretty good memory for names and faces, and I have met a great many people in my life, all over the country and all over the world. I can get along all right without any special aids to memory, but I do not always trust to memory alone — that is to risky. I have, throughtout my life, made it a habit, nor only in politics but in business and socially, to help that memory by keeping a brief memorandum of anything that seems important and at the same time incomplete and unfinished. I keep that memo until the matter is closed. It is simple, easy way to stay abreast of responsibility and pending situations. Let us call it a profitable bit of detail. James A. Parley. LETTERS STEFANIK LODGE NO. 142 Houston, Texas Hello Friends: Here's hoping all of you enjoyed the holidays with utmost pleasure. Stefanik Lodge no. 142, Houston, certainly had a great surprise at the large audience for our Xmas • program. Many thanks to all of you who attended and participated. The Willing Workers Toward Progress Club did quite well with their Xmas program. First, "The Xmas Welcome" by Louise Becan, David Triska, Bennie and V'Ann Cooper. Second, The whole club sang four Xmas Carols. Third, "Grandma's Dream" (tableaux.) . All children participated with Dorothy Cooper playing the part of grandmother, 'thinking her thoughts out loud. As she sat in a comfortable rocker with her knitting, she recalled the days, when her family just began 'to take an interest in. Xmas time' with the stockings and the tree. How tiny hands pulled at her dress hem and asked question after question about all the happenings of Xmas time, how did Santa light the Xmas tree candles, haw did he get down the chimney `when there was no fireplace and a big wood stove with lids on it stood in their kitchen and how on earth did he know Whose stocking was which when he 'hung them on the window sill? Then there was the "Doll's Xmas time Dance" by six little browneyed blonde girls ranging from three to five years in age, Marilyn Becan, Patricia Sturm, Rebecca Hitchcock, Norma and Shirley Johnson and Gayle Sturm. These little. darlings stole the show. They wore short full-tiered pink doll dresses with pink bonnets with flared brims encircling their sweet faces. PLASTICS IN THE HOME More and more we are beginning to live in a world of plastic. Yet, we are hardly aware of it. We take the articles made of plastic compounds for granted. We • don't look surprised. We don't notice any more, that every room has a definite plastic accent. Not only are the iloors, walls and ceilings of plastic composition, but also the furnishings: the upholstery, carpets, lamp shades, curta.his, draperies, table covers and window shades, if not made entirely of plastics, have been treated with the same in order to improve their appearance and durability. Plastic-like chemidals are used to render fabrics rotproof, ,mothproof, waterproof, stain proof and flameproof. In one corner of the living room the piano with its plastic keybord no longer has sticky notes in damp weather, because it is equipped with plastic pounders. In the other corner the plastic console: contains many nonbreakable plastic phonograph recordings. Yes, grandma's knitting needles and the children's toys are also plastic. Throughout the house the exotic ornamental gadgets made of plastics and the flowers in their plastic pots add a touch of novelty, life and beauty. Outside the house the plaSte screens on the windows do not rust and stain the siding. In the back yard the plastic clothespins do not mark the laundry and the plastic line does not sag. Look, the plastic garden hose shows no sign of cracking due to sunlight. When the housewife takes her plastic handbag that matches her plastic baby buggy and goes shopping she Woks at the transparent plastic mailbox that tells her at a glance if there are any letters. Baby is happy with its plastic rattles and safe too with its plastic panties. In the grocery stores there is any number of items that are wrapped in plastic celophane. In the department stores there are scuff-proof plastic shoes for the kiddies. And when purchasing clothing and fabrics the intelligent shopper looks at the label for shrinkage proof, mildew-proof and wrinkleproof qualities—properties imparted by chemical plastic treatment. In a. world of plastics both housewife and husband must know, a little bit about these synthetic compounds themselves if they are to buy intelligently and avoid misobnceptions. CERAMICS; WORKING WITH CLAY 'Do you ever tire of Putting your hands only to routine uses? That -is, to their usual functions, the things you make a liviny, from? Maybe you sometimes feel like using a saw and hammer to Make scinie thing-just anything-because you have confidence in your hands. And may- be You have had the secret thought that, given the chance, you could make some, thing beautiful. It so, you ought to think about ceramics. Ceramics is the art of making articles from clay.. This used to be regarded as : Something that only the Chinese or early Greeks did well. But that idea is wrong. No tiresome technical training is reqUired. All you need is some clay, a few inexpensive tools, and the urge. ', You probably have seen homemade ceramics somewhere-such things as or namental dishes, ash trays, mugs, ciga, rot; boxes or even costume jewelry. And you perhaps have handled them and wondered if you couldn't do as well or be ter M. making something to your -own a'-a.e. And you may have wondered, too, if creating such things- in the quiet of the basement or spare room wouldn't rest' the nerves. To work in clay goes beyond puttering. It can be a way of expressing yourself and that is ultimate satisfaction. One expert who started from s<'ratch gives this advice to the novice in ceramics: Take i a formal course, if you chose, but it isn't imperative. But do join a ceramThs club. Hundreds of communities boast them, for ceramics enthusiasts are like fiShermen. They like to talk about their activities. You can listen and benefit': Then get your materials. Clay is obtainable at pottery and hobby shops in ready-mixed or :flour form. A 50-pound lot of red clay costs about $3.50. White clay costs more. Prepared glazes, the substance which produces the 'shine" and color on a finished piece, may be bought at the same shops. Other , essentials are a roll,

ing pin, a sifter such as is used for flour, a paring knife and a sturdy work table. Don't buy a kiln at the start. The cost is considerable. And maybe the `whole idea, after a trial, won't seem so and you w=ii't want expensive equipaamt left on your hands. Just buy the essentials-the clay, rolling pin, sifter, knife. Start shaping the ash trays, bowls or whatever an instructor or club members advise. You can "fire" your early products in a community kiln or have it done commercially. After a while the 'ownership of a kiln may seem essential to you. "Firing" means to the ceramics enthusiast what the dark room and the art of developing mean to the exacting photographer. Ordinarily, electric kilns used in homes have firing heights up to 2000 degrees. Most ceramics pieces require two firin'gs. The first, or bisque firing, removes water from the clay by intense heat. The clay is left semivitreous. From the second firing come the shine and eolor. Make things for your iriends and watch their interest. Homemade ceramics are among the most personal of all gifts, because the best a person can feel and do is in them. Sell part of your output, if you choose. The market has a large ceramics appetite. But retail stores may offer relatively low prices to the producer. Market the pieces that were easiest to make, that took you little time. One ceramics maker puts it this way: "I had no art training. But I joined a club and tried hard until something very bad became better. And that wasn't only an improvement in ceramics. It was an improvement in me. I found patience and self-confidence and an increasing wonder. For it is a wonder to know that those things now decorating my house came incredibly from a coarse clay in my hands and from my own desire for things as I myself want them to be." & Some minds are like concrete, all mixed up and permanently set.
