Jedna pani, jmenem Effie Morrisonova, eetla roman sepsanSr americkou spisovatelkou Zona Gale "Lights Out" (Svetla zhasla), o jednom starem manZelskem parkti, kterST musel ku konci sveho Zivota uchfliti se do okresniho chudobince.

Pani Morrisonova dogla si k'mestske admihistraci, aby zru gili zchatradSr star chudobinec a doVolili ji vybudovati malou osadu, kde by nastavela tilsVetnicOve 'domedky pro stare lidi. A ten kus pozemku? To piece neni zahon "Neminim pro tyto stare lidi piipravovati zahony odpovedela pani Morrisonova.. "Kdyt mi mesto da pravo pouZiti tento mestskYr pozemek, ti, kdo tarn budou, yypestuji si rriZe sami." Pozemek byl ji povolen. Pani Morrisonova pfemluvila stavitele, aby ji nakreslil plan se dvanacti domky. Tenkrate vlada SpojenSrch state, roku 1935, vypomahala v rtznS7ch vefejmich projektech. Pani Morrisonova dostala od vlady na upraveni pozemku a postaveni dvanacti chaloupek $30,000. KaZdST domek mel 'obSr kuchyriku a moder--vacipokj,loznic ne zafizenou koupelnu. Osada pro stare lidi byla pojmenovana Roosevelt Park. President F. D. Roosevelt slotail tenkrate prvni lhutu. Hlavni Ufadovna? Jestli za posledni etyki roky nebylo tteba ani jednoho, pkigti etyki roky nebude tfeba vice. MUSINGS OF THE EDITOR OUR SINCERE CONGRATULATION must go to the pre-convention By-laws Committee that had conscientiously and admiringly worked for three days on the recommendations to improve the Bylaws. The full report of the work of this committee was given in the C'zech section of the last issue of the Vestnik. For the benefit of the English readers, we point out some of the more important recommendations. TO START WITH, THE COMMITTEE changed Article No. 3 by giving every member to use either Czech. or English in any meeting, including the Conven-: tion. Likewise, the manner of recording will be left up to the local lodges. ANOTHER PROPOSAL STRESSES the importance of attending the meeting of the home lodge. A member who aspires to be a delegate to the convention must have to his record not less than 50% attendance of the meetings of his home lodge. It used to be a standing joke that many a delegate . did riot attedd but one or two meetings•a year, but did not fail to show up at the annual meeting to get the honor of being elected a delegate. There will be no more premiums for unattendance. • • ANOTHER IMPORTANT RECOMMENDATION favors the creation of seven districts. The By-laws Committee is working on the plans' to divide the state into seven districts so that each district would have its own director or a permanent representative in the official family. These directors are to be elected at the convention by the delegates from the respective districts. This means that the delegates of every district would assemble sometimes during the convention, pick out two men best suited for the responsible office of 'director, elect one as a director, and the other as an alternate, and let the convention ratify the election. It certainly would place the right of selecting the best qualified men in the hand of those who can pass on the qualifications of the men so selected. It would be—in the estimation of your editon—a much better procedure than the present one where the men:
from the southern part of the state force upon the memberS of the northern part a man of doubtful qaulifications. • • ANOTHER RECOMMEDATION has to do with the age of the officers of the Supreme Lodge. Some one must have thought that we are drifting in the direction to be afflicted with "fossilitis", and proposed an amendment that no member can be elected for the office in the Supreme Lodge who is '70 years old or more, or who would attain that age before the next regular convention. Of course, there are two sides to this argument, or may be three sides—your side, my side, and the right side. It has to be decided at the next convention. We record it for the information of the delegates. . THE BY-LAWS COMMITTEE is putting some pressure on the next convention or on the next Supreme Lodge by inserting a recommendation that it will be the duty of the Supreme Lodge to employ an agent who would train our local solicitors. Local organizers would come under his supervision. THERE IS ONLY IMPEDIMENT in this proposed obligation of the Supreme Lodge to employ a state organizer or a supreme field manager. Practical side of the proposition is missing. The idea itself is very desirable, but it will be difficult to carry it out. For one thing, no more will be done between now and the time of the convention than what had been done by the Supreme Lodge officers in the past three and a half years. We cannot expect the officers to look for a field manager so close to the convention. And if somebody doesn't look around for a member with the right qualifications, how can the officers of the Supreme Lodge carry out the proposed obligation? •
•
THE FOREGOING DOES NOT IMPLY that the idea of employing a state mang ager for the field workers is one. The point which your editor wishes to emphasize is that only very few of our members have an inkling of an idea about the standards of qualifications fcr
the fraternal insurance manager. The idea of employing a capable man to train other organizers is an excellent one, but we must have a workable plan to go by At present, we do not have it. And we shall hardly have it within the time between now and the next eonvention. But somebody should devote some spare time to present something more or less definite to time next convention. THE RIGHT MAN TO DO the planning for better organizational work is the president of the Supreme Lodge. He is in charge of the organizational activities, lie supervises the work of solicitors, and he is the logical man to present to the next convention suggestions concerning the installation of a- Practica1 plan. Or if he feels that- the' scope of such planning would be too nnich .for him alone, he has the right- z-and it is his moral obligation— to call for assistance from any sincere and devoted member who would be capable of rendering such assistance. ANOTHER APPROACH TO THE PROBLEM could be tried out. President of the Supreme Lodge could ask for volunteers who would be willing to form a pre-convention organization committee just for the purpose to study 'the needs for better organizational -Work— with no remuneration and no expenses —in order to have some practical suggestions for the delegates of the next convention. The volunteers would have to have more than just willingnes or reputation. They would have to strive to bring into the meeting of the committee plans and methods of practical application, so that the committee could, prepare a program that would be sound and permanent for all the years to come. • ALL OF US SHOULD RECOGNIZE more keenly than ever before the vital importance of training, of the right tyr,e of education in the sale of service of life insurance. There ate other fraternal societies who offer training courses to their field workers, give them special (1.7ininations, and nrepare the salieltors Wontinued on page 20.)

ABRAHAM LINCOLN Ainerica has produced a galaxy of great men and women in sundry and various fields of human activity. The charaeter and conscience of our famous RePUblic proclaim their glory and declaretheir handiwork as skillful architects of fate. America is a mirror in which is shown the likeness of each of them irrespective of the category to which. he or she belongs. It: has been truthfully said that some men, are born great, some achieve greatness, while others have greatness thrust upon them. The writer is of the opinion—after being a student; of Abraham Lincoln since childhood—that this unparalleled distinguished American achieved outstanding , ,greatness by virtue of his having been born great. A knowledge and understanding of the history of the childhood, youth, and manhood of this noble char acter-lead unerringly to this conclusion as, an established fact. While,Americans reverently and enthusiastically commemorate the one hundred and forty-third anniversary of his birth, the civilized world joins with them in recognition of and respect for the 'glowing contribution that the martyred''President made to the civilization or-,mankind.
races, creeds, and colors in their struggles from weakness to power, from power to wealth, and from'slavery to freedom. It is clearly obvious that Lincoln is the star actor in this captivating drama. The 'outstanding mark or characteristic of his nobility and greatness was the fact that he was a real man. He was simple, yet great; he was tender and gentle, yet courageous; he was tolerant, yet adamant; he was sympathetic and weak, yet strong; he was liberal, yet thorougly honest; he was a rail-splitter, yet an emancipator; he was confident, yet not arrogant; he had implicit faith in God and Christ, yet was not a church member; he was thoroughly human, yet unique; strikingly dignified, yet common; not handsome, yet possessing a hypnotic personality; unpretentious,. yet a powerful executive and sagacious statesman. In his private letters and papers as well as in his official documents and public addresses are reflected the precious attributes of character hereinbefore indicated. Lincoln's simple creed—by which he lived— is crowded with truth, right, and justice. It reads thus: "I am not bound to win, but I am 'bound to be true; I am not bound to succeed, but I am bound to live up to what light I have. I must stand with anybody that stands right—stand with him while he is right and part with him when he goes wrong." If nations and individuals would adopt this creed and live by it as Lincon did, we would now have in this world a better place in which to live. ) • 4, • In a Radio sidewalk interview, a woman said she had just bought. ten dresses. Musings of the Editor (Continued from page 19.) to render finer service to the member: Such courses of study, if offered P our local solicitors by the state fiel ∎ manager would mark a great forwari step in the development of fraternal lib underwriting by cur SPJST. Withou such courses of instruction, training and education, we are groping amateur• ishly in darkness, we are talking, talking, talking.. . * WE SHOULD EXPRESS OUR APPRECIATION to the By-laws committee foi inserting the new obligation to employ a supreme field manager. Maybe, if it were an elective office, we could get some young mail with college education who had majored in business administration to accept the position. But any young man with proper qualification requirements would prefer to deal with the delegates of the convention, and to be elected by the delegates, than to be hired by the 'officers of the Supreme Lodge. It is the same as if you let the editor be hired by the officers, instead of having him elected by the delegate at the convention. IF THE PRESENT RECOMMENDA, TION, suggested by the By-laws Com-: mittee, is accepted and adopted by the next convention, the Vestnik will be eqaully divided between the Czech and English reading matter. Some of our older readers will not like it. On the other hand, there is an occasional t3111 plaint from the 'Czech readers that the Vestnik is replacing other Czech papers instead of adhering strictly to the matters dealing with fraternal insurance. One thing cannot be disputed:—it much easier to edit the English part than the Czech section. There is a peculiar difference between the typical older Czech member and typical younger American member. The older Czech member associates his daily activities with his own ego; he becomes emotion ally aroused if his theories and ideas .3.re assailed. This difference in the de. ree to which the older members closed them selves off from others was even reflected in the old method of having the door of the lodge hall closed and two guards —the inner guard and the outer guard —posted at the entrance. OUR NEIGHBOR'S DIAMONDS You may not know that one of our neighboring states is called the Diamond State and has a diamond in its State flag. The only diamond mines in the Northern Hemisphere are in Pike County, near Murfreesboro, Arkansas. A diamond pr6serve has been opened to visitors, and a number of interesting and outstanding finds have been made by tourists. If you would like to get a real diamond for as little as. $1.25, plus a trip to Arkansas, read the story which follows. But first, about the location of the diamond mine. It is 75 miles northeast of Texarkana, approximately halfway between Hot Springs and Texarkana; on a scenic, ' good, hard-surfaced highway, 21/2 miles southeast .of Murfreesboro, Ark. The first two diamonds discovered in Arkansas were found in the crater of diamonds on August 7, 1906. At the crater of diamonds, in the diamond preserve, a tourist atraction is operated by the company, Diamond Preserve of the United States, Inc.- To reach the entrance 21/2 miles from the courthouse one drives due south on a newly paved city street. There are no turn-offs and the road is well marked. Upon reaching the entrance to the diamond preserve a beautiful drive, Diamond Lane leads to the ticket office and wet-weather parking area. The admission charge is $1.25 for adults and 35 cents for children, tax added. Clean, comfortable restrooms for both white and colored adjoin the parking lot. During dry weather visitors are permitted to park their cars under the big shade trees by the office-museum building. The entrance gate is open from 9 until 5, 7 days a week during the winter months. Upon registering in the office-muSell .11 building, seeing a display of Arkansas diamonds in the rough, a mineral display, exact replicas of historic diamonds of the world, a fluorescent exhibit, and hearing a lecture on Arkansas' crater of diamonds, the vIsitorrs are taken by guides on a tour of the crater area. After the various formations occurring in the volcanic pipe have been pointed out and the geological phenoMen: n explained visitors are permitted to search for diamonds. They are most ciffictilt to find but regardless of the number found only one will 'be given with an appropriate certificate' after the company's appraisal. If the diamond weighs 5 carats or less it will be given absolutely free. In case the diamond weighs more than 5 carats a royalty and any tax due must be paid by the finder. The tour usually lasts from an hour to an hour and a half. On it some of the
old diamond mining equipment used in former operations is pointed out and explained. A small diamond hand-washing machine built by Henry Ford in Dearborn, Mich., in the early 1920's when he was negotiating for purchase of the crater has been powered with an electric motor and set up for operation. Effective November 1, 1951, visitors de-' siring will be permitted to try their luck with it under the same rules outlined above. Since the discovery in 1906 it is estimated that 100,000 diamonds have been recovered totaling approximately 45,000 carats. The Arkansas diamonds are harder than those found in South Africa, South Wales, India, and Brazil and are absolutely perfect and equal to the finest stones found at the Jagersfontein mine or that were ever found in India. The largest diamond so far reported weighed 40.23 carats. It is known as the Uncle Sam and today, cut, weighs 12.27 carats. The diamond preserve was officially opened to visitors on February 20, 1951. Thirteen outstanding finds have been made by tourists. The first day a diamond of the finest white type weighing 0.12 carat was found by Richard Buhlis,, 1006 Park Avenue, Hot Springs, Ark. On May 16 Staff Stg. Lewis Matthews, 2006 Avenue C, stationed at the Carswell Air Force Base, Ft. Worth, Texas, found a diamond weighing 0.50 carat. Abraham Lincoln, planning his, earn.; paign for Congress in 1846, wrote a legal' associate that he supposed he'd have to see about getting a "few dollars to rub together." Times have changed. It costs money--important money—to run for public office today. If you plan to run for Governor of your state, or for , the U. S. Senate, you should know where to lay your, hands on $50,000—and perhaps a good deal more. That is just for preliminary expenses. If you are successful in securing the nomination, the party will then shoulder a substantial part of the expenses. Taking the states as an average, total-. ing the expenses of all candidates in all parties, it certainly costs a minimum of a million dollars to elect a Governor, a U. S. Senator and the various Represen tatives. Costs have risen faritasically. certain U. S. Senator, from a Western state was elected with an investment of about $50,000. Six years later, his campaign for re-election cost $150,000— and he lost the race! A campaign manager in another state admits the party backing his candidate for governor spent,, $1 a vote—approximately $300,000. He too, lost at the polls. Harold E. STNiK NVEST,TEXAS is used in Article 8 of our By-laws which article deals with the eligibility of members for election as delegates to the Convention. In the discussion that followed and which was participated in by several members of the Supreme Lodge and Editor Valcik who explained the various meanings of the word "l'adne" when used in various ways and under various circumstances, it Was agreed that in the opinion of the majority of the members of the Supreme Lodge, the meaning of the word "kadne" as used in that article, is, that for a member to be eligible for election as a delegate to the convention such delegate should have attended the . meetings of his Lodge, more or less regularly, and should have attended not less than onehalf of its meetings, and Secretary Chupick was instructed to so advise said Lodge. The above inquiry was addressed to the Secretary of the Supreme Lodge by Brother Bristik, Secretary of Lodge No. 88 of Houston, Texas, by a letter, dated January 11, 1952, of which letter Attorney Kacir received a carbon copy. President Marek asked every member of the Supreme Lodge, individually, if he had any question to ask regarding our bond holdings, loans or any invest:ments or any transaction of the Supreme Lodge made, passed, adopted and/ or enacted at any time and if so that he requests such member to present it to the attention of the Supreme Lodge at that time so that proper disposition and explanation of could be made and the matter then recorded in the minutes. Th e Right Kind of Leadership There is no man so high or so loW that he cannot profit from good advice. A man who shuns counsel when he can get it may be commended for faith and courage in himself, but he is courting disaster. It has been said that a lawyer who represents himself has a fool for a client. A leader who listens only to those on whom he has bestowed favors will find he has fools for advisers. A leader should at all times strive to be worthy of public office rather than be concerned with holding public office. Honest men can and do have differences. Honest men can and do make mistakes. There have been rascals among leaders, but the scoundrel is found out. Disgrace comes inevitably at the hands of his party, the opposition, the people, or the judgment of history. Leadership is more than a political game. It is a career of infinite capabilities of service. At no time have capabilities for service been greater than they are today for a leader who would lead the way of destiny. In this century we have known two world conflicts. Each time we have won the war and lost the peace. These two holocausts are the evil roots of all our present-day problems. War is the most fiendish evil which spawns a host of lesser evils. War makes murder holy. Its reward is theft. It smiles at all manner of laxity. War has always been ghastly. It is a thousandfold more so with the unchaining of new and monstrous 'forces of destruction. Our national and individual standards suffered from the impact of World War I around the world. They were more severely jolted by World War II. They are now being shredded by the prospect of still another global contest. We cannot teach men to kill and to steal and to laUgh at convention without paying the price. It is amazing that our system has survived the impact of these succesive blows. It is for our leaders today and the leaders coming from your generation to dedicate themselves to still greater efforts of service today. Let us then not surrender or grumble or give way to dissent. Let us rather make ready to welcome leaders who will lead us as free people should be led, us seek and support leaders who will lead men by giving them faith in themselves and in their faith. -) • young lady after a broken engagement returned all the gent's letters marked, -Fourth Class Male." --Willie D. THE SIGNIFICANT GRADUATION e Fireman's Record, official paper of the Fireman's Fund Insurance Company,' published for ,the benefit of its Members as we publish our Vestnik, we found an article which should be read by every one of cur young members. I t was written by Nelson Valjean about a girl whb by her valiant fight emerged froin the lonely world of the deaf and blind. It is a story of America's new Helen Keller.—Editor, When the radiant blonde stepped up for her high-school diploma, she unexpectedly turned to her teachers out front with a warm little speech of appreciation and farewell. Concluding, she blew a kiss to a spectator, accepted her sheepskin and gracefully retired. The audience sat spellbound, hushed absolutely, for the golden-haired girl was totally deaf and blind and only a few years ago could neither talk nor walk. Spinal meningitis had left a helpless robot. The miracle of the new Jackie Gennoi Coker, honor student, had evolved largely from a mother's devotion—from the love of a slight, graying woman who sat with her husband in this auditorium of the California School for the Blind at Berkeley. Now as Mrs. Coker caught the blown kiss, she saw her lovely daughter become the nation's only deaf-blind high school graduate of that year, It was in Coolidge, Arizona, on Armistice Day, 1935, that freckled tomboy Jackie—named for her father—rode home on horseback feeling ill. Only the week before the robust seven-year-old, in a blazing red cowgirl blouse, had captured a, prize-in the Coolidge:: rodeo parade. Her sponsor, Deputy Sheriff Asa Gardner, had jokingly remarked he'd better look out or some day she would be wearing his badge. Jackie's mother put her to bed, chiding, "You probably ate too much candy, but you can skip your lessons tonight," To Mrs. Coker, lessons every night were important, for Jackie's education had long been her dream. "Tomorrow you'll feel better," she added. Instead the tomboy grew speedily worse, ran a high fever, and a silent darkness enfolded her. She lost sense of balance and muscle co-ordination. The meningitis next destroyed her wordforming memory, garbling her speech until her mother barely fathomed it. Her condition was feared hopeless. Eventually Coolidge neighbors gently suggested that Mrs. Coker place this pathetic "thing" in some institutiion where she could receive 24-hour-a-day
care through the years. "You must part quickness, Mrs. Coker wondered if her with Jackie— and try to forget," they daughter, after all, might not be edu, catedi—a little. Scarcely daring, she resaid. Though now 21 and a tomboy no longer she treasured—and often wore—ther keepsake. On graduation day — May 22, 1949 — Mr. and Mrs. Coker arrived at the Berkeley school auditorium early. Few here knew the story of this woman's consecration to a child who had seemed to others a hopeless burden, of her struggles, her boundless faith and inspiring singleness of purpose. In an age where there was much indifference toward children, her acts, to intimate friends, shone out like a beacon. Only now would she slow down. But this was Jackie's day. As the once wordless robot addressed her audience at diploma time, Mr. Coker whispered to his wife, "Did you ever hear our daughter talk more beautifully?" There was no answer. Mrs. Coker had become speechless herself.

WATCH YOUR WEIGHT Are you overweight? If you are, if you are over 40 and refuse to do anything about it, do you know you are deliberately cutting your life's span? Sounds rather harsh,' doesn't it? But let's look at a few statistics. For every 100 persons of normal weight who die, 144 who are 15 to 24 percent overweight pass on and 175 persons who are over 25 percent overweight die. And if you go into the rate for specific diseases, the rate jumps tremendously, for example the rate for overweight diabetics is 257. We have tackled a number of various diseases here in the Vestnik in an attempt to bring our membership a little- more information on them and to help them to be healthier and live longer if we possibly can. Now no disease we have treated so far can have any more important bearing on the health of our members than this one, for- overweight is the contributing cause of many, ailments which beset the hu man race. We're going to mention Underweight and what may be done about it jjoo, but so few people are underweight in comparison to our slightly and more than just slightly heavy friends, and with much less serious consequences, that we shall devote the most of this article to the 28 percent of all Americans who are the heavyweights. First let's review what being overweight does to our systems. It definitely shortens life by adding burdens to the heart and circulatory system. Deposits ,cf fat interfere with the use of food and cause excessive hunger and thirst, as in diabetes. Fat adds many unnecessary miles of blood vessels through which the heart must pump blood, and this added work causes that faithful muscle to wear out soon. For every 10 pounds of -fat gained, about one half mile of additional capillary blood vessels must be developed -to nourish this extra tissue. No wonder the poor heart muscle which has not rested a whole minute (in consecutive seconds) since its owner was born, is likely to give up when several miles of blood vessels are added to its regular trek. For every person over 40, overweight is a danger signal. Studies of life insurance: tables show that in addition to heart disease and diabetes, overweight people develop that other killer, high blood pressure, as well as other lifeshortening conditions much earlier, and are apt to die much younger than persons whose weight is normal. They are poor .surgicarrisks and have less resistance to infection. Gallbladder disease and gallstones are so frequently associated with overweight, that obesity and
overeating are generally accepted as contributing causes to the formation ofl gallstones. Treatment for gallstones is generally surgery. The man or woman I who is 25 'or 30 pounds overweight will have a deposit of fat varying from one to five inches thick over the abdominal wall. This fat is much slower than muscle or other tissue in healing and much more likely to become infected. Danger of rupture and pneumonia is also much greater. For your health's sake then, if you are .overweigK resolve to do Aomething about it today. Nov, what to do. First, what makes a person fat? The commonest theory offered these days, is that "glandular trouble" causes obesity. This is a nice way out and a saving to one's pride. Of course there are some people whose overweight is truly caused by their thyroid or pituitary but — let's face it — these persons are few. Medical science has proved that out of 100 obese persons, perhaps five have an endocrine gland disturbance. The other 95 simply eat too much. Another common excuse is that obesity is inherited. "We're all fat—it runs in our family." A nice explanation but very seldom true. Careful studies have been made in laboratories cf obese individuals making such claims and no variation from normal metabolism has been found in their cases. What has been discovered about heredity, however, is that excessive appetites sometimes run in families. This is a human factor that can be controlled and controlled (selfcontrolled is a better word) consistently for even a short period of time, will be lost. Yes, most people are fat simply because they eat too much. This does not necessarily mean that they stuff themselves with food. It just means that they take in more calories than their bodies can use up. This is sometimes very easy to do if a person has poor eating habits. The girl who eats several doughnuts and a "coke" for lunch has consumed a lot of calories without really being nourished. The man who drinks two or three glasses of beer and eats a couple of hot dog sandwiches of an evening, has added about a thousand calories to his daily intake, over an above his regular three meals. In young people, extra, amounts of food consumed are used up in energy. We've all seen the thin, lanky young adollescent consume more food daily than three working men, without adding an ounce of fat to his lean frame. What we fail to realize in our own cases
is that the body's energy reuirements usually change after 30 or 40. As a person gets older, metabolism slows down and fewer calories are needed to maintain weight. Okay, so we know the dangers of overweight, we know why we're overweight, what do we do? We cut dOwn on food. Nov no rigid diets and absolutely no drugs should be taken without the advice of .a physician. The best reducing programs are those undertaken under a doctor's care. But if you are .overweight, begin today to do something about it. Anyone who wants to get rid of excess-poundage can do so. Sure it takes grit and perseverance and determination but it can be done. And it pays dividends. You'll feel better, healthier, more alert. You'll look better too. Clothes will fit smoothly again and you'll get a real thrill out of that size smaller suit or dress you buy next time. •
