NEJLEPSI DRUH POi STEN' NOil- DY VEC samortejma a eelM kern znama pottebuje vysvetleni. Rozhovor utichnul. Snad katdST dekal, at co tekne nekdo jinY. Zde byla prvni odpoved': "Poslouchej, kamarade, kdyi to dice§ 'mai bez okolku, napted tekni, kdy mss v nmyslu umtit." Nebyla to zrovna nejptitnetenej gi odpaved'. ZadnY elovek, ani ten nejlepgi aktuar, nemdie s ureitosti lid: "Tohle si vezmi." Vezmeme si ptiklad k vuli lepalmu ohjasneni. Ziskame do SPJST tit mladiky, Jana, Josefa a Jindticha. V gichni tit jsou stejneho veku, tekneme, 25 rokt. Ptedstavme si te2, to mail stejne velikou domacnost a rodinu, stejne pfijmy, stejnou praci; zkratka jejich finaneni pomery a rodinne zavazky jsou hodne stejne. Jindfich zemte ye veku 30 let.

Anebo nahospodati si dost majetku a cele bohatstvi ptipadne vzdalenYrn ptibuznYm, Jan& ptipad. Tim ptichezime tam, odkud jsme "Kdyi to chce g miti na puntik, napted tekni, kdy umteg." A to nedokate tadnY. VYsledek toho je, to pit kupovani tivotniho poji gteni neni =trio poeitati s budoucnosti. Jindfichfly osud nebude tototnY s JosefovYm, ant s JanovYm. Pfehlilim znovu odporudeni stanovniho vYboru, zdali byly piijaty nejake nove navrhy ohledne ochrany pied nejistotou. Olanek 132. zastava nezmenen.

surance". Nemame ho, a men bychom ho miti. Zivotni pojigteni je ochrana pied nejistotou, obzvla gte tam, kde se mladY &ova zadluti. A jestli dlenu jsme ochotni gajeiti at $50,000 na jeden kus majetku, men bychom mu ta poskytnouti dostateenou ochranu pied nejistotou, dostateene poji gteni na vyrovnani hypotednich pohledavek v ptipadu iimrti. Proto ptimlouval bych se, aby elanek 132 byl dopinen. Povgimneme si dale pfipadu Josefa, kterSt zemiel v sedmdesati letech. Pro nej mame, die na gich stanov, pojistku ttidy "B". A zase soudim, to elo.nek 132. by mel bSti dopinen, abychom ye stanovach melt te2 ttidu "K", kde poplatky se plati do veku 65 let, a kde obnos certifikatu vyplati se at po smrti. Certifikaty tiidy "K" j12 vystavujeme, ale hlavni akednici melt upozorniti stanovni vYbor, Ze ye stanovach tiidu "K" nemame. Znovu opakuji, to bych se piimlouval, abychom si zavedli pojigteni, ktere by nage eleny chranilo v piipadu dhanika majiciho hypoteeni pujeku. Bylo nekolikrate ieeeno,ze mame takika vgechny druhy pojigteni ate nove pHstupujici glen si male vybrati dle libosti. Zde vgak se nejedna pouze o nove diem, ale tei o na ge stavajici eleny, kteti gadaji o majetkove piijaky a ktefi by radi melt sve hypoteani pohleda yky kryte dodate6nym pojiStenim, tedy terminovou ochranOu, doeasnou a lacinou. "A tak at' si vezme, co mame", iekne nekterY organisator. Tot' pohodlna, odpoved', ktera nag organisaeni obchod nezlepgi. Nutno uvatiti a ptipustiti, to vgechno tivotni pojigteni je rozdeleno do tit kategorii: doeasne (pfipad Jindficha) ; celoglvotni. (pfipad Josefa); a iisporne (ktere si mohou dovoliti lide lepe situovani, dru hu Jana). U na gi SPJST mame certifikaty celcigivotni a fisporne, nebo jejich pczmeneni. Nername certlflkaty terminove, doeasne, net pro deti. A byly by to certifikaty nejlacin gi s nejiepgim a nejvy§girn zdrojem pkijmil.

Stanovy nabyly vatnosti svou tlou gt'kou. Pet vet, misto 150 tadek, by na to stadilo. Jestli Jednota nema schopneho Clena, kterY by mohl tiditi organ uspokojive a pro dobro Jednoty, ani pet stranek stanov neudela z fugera redaktora. Neni tkeba zatetovati stanovy malichernostmi. Piedsjezdovy stanovni vybor nezkracoval a neptepisoval stanovy, aby je upravil do kratg iho formatu. Stanovni vybor mohl jednati pouze o tech opravach a odporueenich, ktera mu byla zaslana. Mell jsme k tomu pet mesicu Casu, kdy navrhy na opravy mely byti uvateny, upraveny a odeslany. Co nebylo dosud pkedloteno a stanovnim vYborem schvaleno a upraveno, nalezli jsme v pfedmieislo Vestniku. Bude-li to ponechano vgem delegatum, bude kfiku, bouke, plak a vzru geni cittt bez vysledku a uspokojeni.

Aby organisaCni prace lepM pokraeovala, stanovni vybor pkijal odporueeni nekterYch mistnich facia, by Hlavni ntadovna najala statniho organisatora nebo die potieby i vice statnich organisatora. Tuto my glenku chceme probrati trochu clkladneji. Nejake vYstkitky vtdy setene, i kdyby nedovedl napsati ani jeden originalni elanek. Semtarn by to vazlo, ale nejakY Cas by to Cleni trpeli. Lee statni organisator bude daleko dAletitej gi, odpovednej gi a pro nagi SPJST vyznamnejai redaktor, kterYkoliv keditel nebo i nekterk Akednik Hlavni fikadovny. TakovY e'en by mel byti opatrne vybrank a ne pouze jlallavni fitadovnou najmutk jako zamestnanec. 0vgem, jestli chceme "najmouti" statniho organisatora, mideme podobne "najmouti" redaktora, vrchniho lekake, pravniho radce, hlavniho tieetniho a tfeba i hlavniho pokladnika. A to bude hodne tetly Nejleheejtii rozke§eni ovSem by bylo kdyby si delegati odhlasovali, aby Hlavni Utadovna byla povinna najmouti statniho organisatora. Don't Take All The Credit The general manager of a large store was telling me about one of his most valued employees, a girl with everything needed to go to the top, "except one thing." "What is that?" I asked. "A willingness to give some credit to others," he said. He explained that for _all her brilliance and ambition and ability he was having to let this girl go because this one trait made it impossible for her to keep step in the organization. You will find the situation he outlined in almost every office, in every community, yes, in every household. Nearly everyone you meet suffers to a •certain extent from what my friend terms "credititis." This is merely the desire to take credit for everything, whether you deserve it or not. In an office whenever an improvement is made, the credit hounds step in claim the credit. You have seen this happen. It ho opens also in the family circle. In the beginning taking credit when it's due is only natural — is perhaps good. But the malady of credititis is insidious. Presently the afflicted person begins taking credit for everything, and makes a career of wanting to be praised. That's when her usefulness stops, my merchant friend said. The big people I have known haven't cared one whit for credit. They wanted results. They knew, these big people, that if you are willing to forget credit and not be jealous about getting it, you can accomplish wonders. One woman I know was interested in restoring Texas landmarks — pioneer forts, battle grounds, things like that. Outside of a small circle of friends, no one suspects she is responsible for a vast amount of work. She gives others the credit. When I asked her why she did that, she said: "What do I care about credit? Let others have it. I want to see the historical landmarks restored. What .elSe counts?" It's funny 'thing, though, that no one is ever cheated cut of credit. In some way credit -comes to those who deserve it, whether they seek it or not. ) • ilb • A small boy was being sent to summer camp, much against his will, and was making no bones about it. "Why, you'll just love camp," his aunt said soothingly. "You'll have a • simply wonderful vacation." "I won't," was the acid retort, ""but my mother will."

MUSINGS OF THE EDITOR YOUR EDITOR MADE A MISTAKE, and so did our supreme officers slip up. We failed to call the attention of our members to the fact that Brotherhood Week, an annual 'observance sponsored by the National Conference of Christians and Jews, was during last week, February 17-24, with President Truman serving as honorary chairman and Eric Johnson as general chairman of the event. • • BROTHERHOOD WEEK WAS established in 1934 at the suggestion of Monsignor Hugh McMenamin, a priest of Denver, Colo. Each year since then the President of the United States has served as honorary chairman of the United States observance. THE PURPOSES of the week are: (1) Rededication to the ideals of respect for people and human rights; (2) Demonstration of practical things people can do to promote these ideals; (3) Enlist more people in year-round activities to promote and to build brotherhood. • • THE CALL TO A DEEPER realization of brotherhood is important, particularly at this hour. But brotherhood must be more than a broad generality. To be real it must be personally practiced in everyday life. In addition, brotherhood must include differences of opinion, even of convictions. And that is one point where most of us need a great deal of practice: We hold our own convictions sacred and we don't give a hoot for our brother's convictions. • • IF YOU DON'T ATTEND meetings, you cannot be a delegate. If you don't come to meetings, you cannot serve on a committee. That's what happened to our supreme officers for not attending the National Fraternal Congress last September. They were dropped from the N F.C. committees. ♦ • SEVERAL ITEMS SHOULD OCCUPY the minds of our delegate between now and the last week in June when our convention will open in Houston. 'One of them is to hold as many district meetings as possible for the purpose of ex-1 changing ideas and propositions which

will come before the delegates at the convention. As Brother Reuben Lesikar stated at the Taylor district meeting: "We can enlighten ourselves on good many things, just by getting together in a meeting like this, freely and enthusiastically, where the value of time does not come into consideration." • • MANY OF THE RECOMMENDATIONS of the pre-convention By-laws Committee may be fully discussed at the district meetings. Many useful suggestions can be brought forth when delegates from twenty or more local ledges come together. It will be surprising to most of the delegates as to how much information can be picked up at these informal district meetings properly conducted. ♦ • THE BY-LAWS COMMITTEE suggested, for instance, that seven organizational districts be formed by the next convention. Each of the seven districts would have a director of its own choice, and also an alternate, to represent the district in the official family at the headquarters. It is thought that this method of each district selecting or electing its own director by the delegates of the district at the convention will be an improvement over the old method of having a director be elected by everybody. And if the director could not serve for any reason, his alternate would be ready to serve. Definitely, it is an improvement and a democratic way of people selecting the best qualified man. • • THERE IS ANOTHER IMPORTANT recommendation proposed by the Bylaws Committee which should be' studied carefully and unbiasedly. It is the suggestion that the Supreme Lodge is obligated to hire a state manager to train our local solicitors. In the business of any fraternal association, investment is most important. Next to the investment department is the selling insurance department. Our SPJST has progressed steadily by the trial-and-error method. Our solicitors are still fooling around with only $500 and $1,000 prospects. Yet, as the conditions are now, most people are prospects for very much more than $1,000 of life insurance. If our solicitors are to be successful in selling our SPJST

insurance, which is the lowest and equal-. ly as good as any other, they cannot afford to waste time which is worth $3.00 per hour on two-bit prospects, It is sup7. posed to be the job of the state manager to train these local solicitors that they could sell larger amount of insurance to fewed people. ♦ • THE DELEGATES of the next convention may have tO insist that we raise the maximum insurance risk. The annual cost of administering a $10,000 certificate is obviously just about the same as= the annual cost of administering a $500. certificate. It costs no more to do the bookkeeping job with a premium of $200 than with a $12 annual premium. It is cheaper to handle the one big himp sum than it is to handle a dozen small dribblings. WE HAD ENCOURAGED in the years past to take out as little as $250 in protection with the SPJST. That was in days when was only a winding trail to accomodate only the wagon for travel to town. That was before the straight six-lan e c1:=eria'-',-n--'n!,r was built. That was then when the Vestnik was for 80' cents a year, and when the offices of the Supreme Lod ge was located in the rear., of a general merchandise store. That was when we had only one officer at the headquarters, no solicitors, hardly no expenses, and everybody chipped in two, bits every three months to pay the one officer. The premium dollar went all for paying the benefits. AS WE OPERATE TODAY, your dollar p ays death claims, pays salaries, pays for the rate book which they carry. Your pays for the work of solicitors, and pays for the rate book khich they carry. Your dollar is split so many ways that you almost resent it. Generally speaking,. your dollar pays for benefits and it pays for expenses. It may sound like one of the Texas brags, but, nevertheless, the expenses of our SPJST are ver y low far. lower than the expenses Of similar organizations. (Continued on page 20.)

Terror gripped him as the king ordered him away to death. Savages closed around him, carrying spears. Each spear had a hole near its point! The dream ended and he awoke to the chilly dawn of a fall morning. He rushed to the attic. With wire and wood and a new type of needle that had a hole near the point, ,-he experimented. By that night he was convinced he could bUild a practical sewing machine. Fired by this belief in the "model in his head," he converted George Fisher, wood and coal merchant of Cambridge, who provided $500 to buy tools and materials. Room and board for the inventor and his family were available in the Fisher home. All that -winter of 18441845 Howe worked steadily, buildirik from his vivid imagination, as if a Picture were before him. By spring he had a machine that sewed neat, straight seams. In May, 1845, he put on a demonstration at the Quincy Hall Clothing Manufactory in Boston, and this trial was successful and attracted attention. 'Yet he could not find a single purchaser. Boston tailors protested that the invention would ruin them. Seamstresses sullenly objected that it would take away their jobs. Some manufacturers claimed that they could not afford to buy machines that cost $300. Elias Howe did. not give up. Still ' financed by his friend Fisher, he built a second machine and applied for a patent, and this was granted on Septernber 10, 1846. We must pass over the inventor's tragic experiences with William Thomas, who bought the British rights for mere 350 pounds, with the verbal promise to pay the inventor five pounds royalty on each machine sold. Howe went to London to adapt his machine to sewing on leather in, Thomas' factory. Friction developed, however, as soon as his employer learned the Yankee's methods, and Howe was discharged. DO YOU HELP YOUR BOSS? You have heard salesmen say, "If I were running this outfit, I'd . :'They usually imply that they could do a better ;Lb than the boss does, They often it belligerently. Very likely they e,-ere [Nuking only about their own idea'; They'Vere not trying to undernd the boss and his sales objectives Spoken belligerently, critically, egotistically, "ff I were running this outfit" is bad medicine. It breeds disloyalty. It short 'circuits constructive thinking. It undermines enthusiasm. It makes selling liard work. On I he other hand, the same words can lead you to a warm, appreciative understanding of your boss. They can help make you one of the happiest, most successful salesmen. It just depends on your point ,cf view. In your relatioopship with your bass, try 'to put yourself in his place. Understand his objectives. Remember, he actually is working for your success. When you try harder to help him you are helping yourself. BM learned the truth of that last statement, He is an ex-GI. When the war was over and he was back home; he married Sarah. He got a job in a grocery store. There were four other salespeople in drat store, all older than Bill. Not one of I hem worked harder than Bill. Bill is a friendly, sincere guy who really likes people. Consequently people like Bill. Yet, dr----pite all that, a year went by and Bill received only a small increase in pay. Arter dinner one evening he told Sarah that he was getting a bit discouraged, He needed more money so , they could zbtry a house someday; he wondered whether he ever could earn enough in that store. The four other salespeople were .older and had been there longer. 'Fortunately for Bill, Sarah was not the sort of wife who would say, "Why don't you tell the old boy to give you more meney; or else ." Nor did she say, "You're' right, they don't appreciate you. Go onout and find another job." Sarah listened to Bill. Then she asked, "What kind of man is your boss, Bill?" ,That:- stopped Bill. He couldn't answer for -a minute. Then he said, "Well, Mr. Johnson has worked hard all his life, I guess, He's in the store every morning befOre any of us gets there and he is still there when we leave. He takes bills and other things home, and he and his wife work on them together. He's pretty decent to Is, bilk he gets sarcastic sometimes with one or two of the boys who come in late or when they drop

everything and leave at quitting time. I don't blame hiM, though; I'd feel the same way." Sarah said, "Bill, I blink you've got something there!" "What Ho you mean, honey?" "Why, you just said that you'd feel the some way. Now, if I were the boss. I'd be looking for an assistant, maybe a partner in my business, who'd feel the same way about things as I did. Does that make sense, Bill?" Bill thought about that for a few minutes. Then he exclaimed, "Holy cow, Sarah, I think you have the answer. I'm going to do everything I would do in that store if I were the boss. And I know where I'll start. "Mr. Johnson is a bearcat about having everyone in the store promptly at starting time in the morning. You know I'm always there on the dot. And next to Mr. Johnson rill, often the first one in. But beginning tomorrow I'm going to get down to the store a half hour ahead of time, Just a hunch.- We'll see what happens. And say, I'll be home 20 or 30 minutes later, too." Bill told me that-_he walked into the store the next morning while Johnson was going over the vegetables, sorting them, and freshening the display for the day. He looked up at Bill with a surprised smile. "Why, Bill, you're early this morning!" "Yes," Bill said, "I thought those vegetables looked a little sad last night, so I decided to come in early and look them over. I'll take off my coat and be with you in a minute." Several weeks later Bill arrived at the store before Mr. Johnson. He was waiting when the boss got there. Johnson actually apologized for being late. He had slept a bit longer than usual. He said, I think' you should have a key to the store. You seem to be taking a real interest in it. I've been telling my wife about you, and she would like to have you and Sarah over for dinner. When can you make it?". Before another year went by, Mrs. Johnson had confided to Sarah that she did not want her husband to work so hard any mere. She thought he ought to have a partner, someone who was as much interested in the business as he. Two years ago Bill was beginning to be so discouraged that he thought he might be in the wrong selling job. Today he is a partner in a large and profitable grocery business. He and Sarah can afford to look for that house they wanted. What made the difference? Did Bill change? Did he suddenly. develop "sell-

ing personality?" Tat he married boss's daughter? No. Bill, thanks to Sarah's thoughtful suggestion, began to think about his boss. He began to try to understand him and his ambitions for the business. Then Bill started to take as much interest as he would if he were the boss himself, When he did that, he was in, It's amazingly easy to move ahead in any form of selling—if you just think about the human side of your selling job. Ask yourself today, "What would I do, how would I work at my selling job, if I were the boss?" Let your answer guide you to greater success in selling, whether you work in a retail establishment or sell for a wholesaler or manufacturer. Many of the men who achieved fame and fortune in business owe their rapid rise to the fact that they went all out to help build their employer's business, doing everything they could no matter how menial or how big. The boss is human, too. His own success depends on your success. Think about his objectives, go all out in helping him by doing far more than he expects of you, and you're sure to be a success. —(Condensed from a book "The Human Side of Selling," by Robert E. Moore. Copyright, 1951, by Harper and Bros., New York.) ) • " WHAT' A HORN FOR

When the traffic light turns green, what length of time elapses before the driver in back of you blows his horn? If you wish to conduct your own research, you can shortly find fairly complete data on this type of mental maladjustment. Reports show that the average driver leans on this horn approximately 111000 of a second after the light turns green, which is a shade longer than it takes the average woman driver to start a left turn after she has made what is laughingly called a hand signal. An Inquiring Reporter once stopped six chronic horn-blowers and asked them why they did it, The answer are significant. 1. "I dunna." 2. "Well, I thought the sap ahead must have run out of gas." 3. "The goof behind me started to blow his horn." 4. "Why, I always blow my horn at the boob ahead. What's it for anyway?" 5. "If I hadn't of, I might a been late at a party." 6. "Oh, did I blow the horn?"

How The Needle Go Its Eye (Continued from page 21.) ing of his models was he able to send his dying wife home. He himself reached the States only after taking the oath of the Debtor's Act. Emerging from this experience, Howe renewed efforts to sell the American rights to his patent. He soon discovered that in his two-year absence some alert businessmen had produced faulty imitations of his sewing machine that sold well. In preparation of the suits to defend his patent, Howe had to recover his first machine and his patent papers, lying in pawn in. Surrey, England. With his usual capacity for making friends, he found a young attorney in Cambridge, Massachusetts, who was going to London that summer and would be glad to help. Tha valuable friend who located and recovered the model machine and the, priceless patent grant was Anson Burlingame, who was later to be American Minister to China. Finally, nine years after completion of his first machine, a verdict was rendered that sustained Howe's claims against pirates infringing on his patent. It was a dramatic moment when Judge Sprague leaned down from the bench to declare: "There is no evidence in this case that leaves the shadow of a doubt that for all benefits conferred by the introduction of the sewing machine, the public is indebted to Elias Howe." For a realistic idea of this remarkable inventor and this time, you should visit the United States National Museum in Washington. There you will see a striking portrait of Elias Howe, painted by Joseph Elliot in 1859. Among other reminders of our rich American heritage is displayed the sewing machine on which the inventor secured his patent. Nearby is the first machine that he built in 1845. If this seems a funny little affair, remember that it is the granddady of all our sewing machines, including the swift electric power machines of the garment industry. These machines have made possible an output of clothing which provides jobs for many thousands in the mills, and in the fashion trades, and in stores and laundries. When Elias died at 48 on October 3, 186'7, he had been honored abroad and in his own country. In that final year he had received a gold medal at the Paris Exposition. The Emperor of France had also conferred upon him the Cross of the Legion of Honor. At his death the wordly noted that the inventor was reputed to have acquired a for-

LETTERS POKROK SWEET HOME LODGE NO. 63 Dear Editor and Members: At the last lodge meeting I made a suggestion that we elect two correspondents of our lodge one for the Czech and one for the English section of our Vestnik. For the Czech write up Bro. Joe N. Morris was elected and for the English section I was nominated and elected without any opposition. I would rather have seen some young man or lady to do this kind of work, but young folks don't seem to be interested in attending their lOdge meeting and so all the lodge duties must be executed by the older members. But let us not worry. Atfer we get too feeble or leave this earth some one will have to take our place. At our regular monthly meeting, Feb. 10, the auditing committee looked over the lodge books and reported they found all of them in good order. The income of membership dues for the year 1951 was $5,759.84. The expenses were $5,647.06 A net gain of $112.06 was realized during the year. The January balance was $576.03, plus the $112.06, equals $688.09 balance cash in bank. Late but interesting and worth knowing that the dance for the March of Dimes given in our new hall on January 20, brought a nice little sum of $159.09 which was sent to the Polio Headquarters Drive in our county. In the name of our lodge No. 63, SPJST. I thank all of you good people who came over and contributed to this noble cause The attendance was very large. The music was old time and modern. The night was quiet and pleasant. Eeverybody was jolly and seemed to be enjoying themselves very much. The Leap Year Dance given last Sunday February 17, turned out a very successful affair. The night was ideal for dancing. The music was old-time but peppy. The crowd was enormous, sold 400 dance tickets. The ladies kept the men folks in a full swing. Everybody present seemed to like the dance. Many ladies expressed themselves that such a nice dance shall be repeated in the near future. Thanks friends, to all of you who attended. We shall be expecting you at our next dance. Chas. Havlik, reporter. tune of two million dollars. Most important for us to remember is that Elias Howe wove brightness into the lives of his own generation, and those to follow.

Strana 23 CECHOSLIOVAN LODGE NO. 40 Hillje, Texas Dear members: I truly hope each and everyone of you members of Lodge No. 40 at Hillje take a few minutes and read this letter. On Sunday March 9, 1952, the Hillje SPJST. Lodge No. 40 will hold its meeting. After the meeting a program will be put on by some of our young members. Following the program a lunch will be served. Folks, please, remember this that no cards will be send out, as it has been done in the past. I know the good ladies will know what to bring, as they always prepare a delicious lunch. So remember no cards will be send out and in case someone says they did not get a card, well we will know how much they read the Vestnik. Bring whatever you good ladies have been bringing in the past. Will close with this thought in mind, hoping whoever reads this letter will tell his or her Brother or Sister member about the meeting and the lunch. After the minutes of the last meeting were read and approved, and business matters disposed of, the announcement that our Lodge had gained 10 niembers during the month of January was made: Of these, 9 aduts and 1 juvenile, 6 are members transfered from other lodges. The other 4 are new members. Due to the untiring efforts of Frank Matush, Sr., were some of these accomplishments made possible. Appointed for the pro-:. gram and entertainment committees were: Mrs. John Kurtin, Mrs. William Kosarek, Mrs. Steve Bartek, and Mrs. John Coufal, Jr. The auditing committee is composed of Edwin Tyroch, Robert Stecher, and Frank Wichita. After the meeting was adjourned, refreshments were served. Our hope is to have the next meeting as well attended as this one was. Glancing through sale back issues of the Vestnik, I came across a letter written by Roy E. Hranicky. I wonder just how many of -us realize how well he supplied us with much needed food for thought? Just how much we do need a constructive youth program in our SPJST! We are indeed in need of good adult leaders—progressive adult leaders. Those who are able to create and hold

I'd like to see these historical tacts translated and printed in the English section. After I had read through them, related some of the incident's to my son, who in turn became so interested he would hardly wait for the next installment! True stories are a revelation of life, and are far more interesting, than fiction. That's why we should try to preserve them, as they are for too valuable to be discarded lightly. In the eyes of our youth, they are America--their hope, their future, and their heritage. Lodge members our next regular meeting will be held March 10, so keep this date in mind and be sure to be present. Fraternally yours, Mrs. John Coufal, Jr. (Editor's Note:—You have put in words what has been repeatedly passing through my mind, Mrs. Coufal, when you stated that the experiences of the old Czech pioneers should be available to the third, the fourth, and all the future genrations. The true stories are too valuable to be completely hidden in some old "kalendaf" published a half century ago. There is so much to be done by those who still can read Czech but are more proficient in English—like yourself—to try their luck in translating such articles. Your editor would be much delighted to do it—but he is already holding three jobs. Vision A Canary Named Hinge Hinge was stricken by rheumatism. It crept over his toes, his feet, his legs. It entered his wing's; Then, one night, Hinge, angered another canary by crossing the line of its flight. This was so plainly abnormal that when it happened a second night Hinge was caught, examined, and discovered to be stone blind. Stiff with rheumatism, blind, yet his song went on. For two years still he continued to eat at the food table, to pass most of his day on the chemical bench, and to sleep on the book closet. The food table is in one corner, the chemical bench in the middle, the book closet in another corner. These widely separated points Hinge found without ever, so far as was noticed, bumping into another bird, and we were looking for the bumping now that we knew he was blind. Then, another night, Hinge again crossed the flight of a bird, who turned on him, drove him from below upward into the air, and he bewildered, landed not on the book closet where he had intended, but on the instrument case. Between instrument case and book closet there is a gap of eleven inches. At the edge of that gap he stood, breathed hard. Gradually his breathing quieted, and it seemed now from the way he stood that he wanted to cross over to the book closet but did not know how. That is, one realized at this moment, that he perhaps always had needed to start from a certain known point in order properly to guide the course of these blind flights. Then an unforgettable thing happened: Crusty, a female canary, was asleep on the V-shaped steel of a Yale door spring. Crusty for years had been Hinge's mate.' She awoke and looked about. Abruptly, for no clear . reason, she flew from her own perch to the edge of the book closet, and piped. And Hinge piped. And Crusty piped again. Hinge piped again. Could she be guiding him? However that, and it may be only a fancy, Hinge plunged into the air, left the instrument case behind him came down on the edge of the book closet, shuffled along to his customary roost seventeen inches from the end, and fell asleep. This is not an interpretation. It is a report. • i • Drivers are safer when the roads are dry, and the roads are much safer when the driver is dry.

THAT'S YOU AN ECONOMIST From the very beginning when your editor assumed the task of taking care of the Vestnik, he has been wishing to write articles dealing with economic history of the United States. Economic history forms a foundation for the study of society. Economic history gives a means of understanding not only economic thought, but politics, law, literature, all human events. Economic history is the account of how men have gotten a living. Economic history tells much of their relationships, habits, aspirations, and achievements. It is the core of American culture. There is an appalling lack of appreciation and understanding that every one of us is an economist. Should somebody ask you what you do for a living, what do you say? You tell him you are a truck driver, bank teller; clerk, teacher ,selling the SPJST insurance as a side line, a government employee and editor, or whatever. But does it ever occur to you that you are something else? Believe it or not, you are an economist, too. DON'T PUSSY-FOOT Few men succeed in our business if they are "too gentlemanly, too courteous, too 'nice.' " You can't be just all sweetness and light and still sell. Strong salesmen usually are tactfully ruthless, and direct. We are told the perfect gentlemen never ask questions. But we have to ask personal questions to find the problem. Without a problem, there is no sale. The prospect says, "I can't afford it," so the truly courteous caller says, "Quite so," and leaves. Not the Bankers lifeman. He says, "Why not?" And if the prospect answers, "I can do better with my money," the nice guy says, "No doubt you can," Not us. We say "Where?" The prospect says, "I have enough." The "gentleman" wouldn't question it. We have to mention it. Maybe he has; more likely, he has not. Let's find out. Ask questions. Good doctors aren't "gentlemen." Neither are good lawyers, or architects— or Bankerslifemen. Honest, yes. Trustworthy, yes. Decent and helpful, yes. Competent, yes. But not pussy-footing. It's good business to lay it on the line, to get in and get out. Then find another prospect. Tact and humility and good manners —always. But waver? Never. Long, tiring interviews? No. State your business; find the problem; solve it. Get action. Don't pussy-foot. -Bankers Life

That's a big word, an economist. What does it mean? Webster tells us that economist is any manager of any affairs, especially on who directs the expencli-, tore of money, time, 'or labor, judiciously and without waste. Or put it in -other words, an economist is somebody conversant with such matters as production, goods and services, distribution, capital and consumption—and how they- all fit together. Well, that's you. You are plenty conversant with those things even if you do not use the fancy words. The work you do for your pay -check, and the work your wife does running the house—that's production. What your boss gets from your work—that's some kind of goods or service; and when he sells his product—thAt's distribution. The money you put in the bank to pay your bills—that's capital. The clothes you buy and food you eat and electricity you use—that's consumption. Yes, you are an honest-to-goodness economist, in the thick of economics all the time. You make a mistake if you regard economics as theoretical stuff which college boys study and then have to un learn. Look upon economics as plain, daily doings. That will take the curse off, let you get closer to it, and let you use it as it should be used—as a set of tools for making a better life fOr you and your family. What is important to understand about economics is that every one of us is assisting in the process of changing old things into new developments. There is so much to tell, and so much to learn about the parts that we are playing in producing new changes and new conditions, that your editor is hopeful,,nay, itching to prepare articles dealing with economic history of our nation. ) 4, A IF YOU DON'T GET VESTNIX If you fail to get your Vestnik, don't write to Houston or to West, but send your notice to the Supreme Lodge in Fayetteville. Names and addresses of members are forwarded by the Supreine Lodge to the publisher every Thursday. Also every Thursday. the Supreme Lodge notifies the publisher to stop sending the V e s t n i k to those members who have been reported by the U. S. Postmasters that the members died, moved away, left no address, etc. Always mail your notice about the Vestnik to: SUPREME LODGE SPJST, Fayetteville, Texas. (d2),

Making Fun of Others We' have all read stories about legendarV giants like Paul Bunyan, who didn't know their own strength. But in real life we more often meet people who don't know their Own weakness. The kidder is one of these. When someone makes a serious remark, he is apt to turn in off with a joking reply that belittles the importance of the matter.'When someone asks a matter-of-fact uesficn he Often replies with a pun, a play on words, or a cynical comment and one-sided smile. -W hen someone else is paid a compliment„ the kidder treats it as though it were a joke and minimizes it. His envy is poorly concealed under the cloak of comedy. The kidder claims he is only exercising his sense of humor and can't understand why other people don't appreciate it. Sometimes he really fools himself into believing that. Actually, however, he is using insincere humor to disguise his desire to detract from the importance or reputation of other people, their ideas and interests. He is bothered by the feeling that others are more succesful, more fortunate or more respected than he is, and his kidding is an attempt to cut them down to his own size. The result of this habit is that he becomes less successful, less fortunate and less respected—for no one admires his brand of abrasive humor. Some people will smile or laugh half-heartedly at his comments, in the desire to pass -off ill-bred behavior lightly and to avoid making and issue of it. It, is far more effective, however, to deal with the kidder's remarks in a very matter-of-fact way. Give no sign that you recognize an attempt to be humorous on his part, and reply in a polite but brief and noncommittal way. It won't be long before he will get the point And at the same time you have done or said nothing unfriendly to add to his inward feelings of injUred annoyance at the outside world. You will avoid friction and make your own life more pleasant if you learn to master the kidding tendency in others, as well as in yourself. * • A lady opened her refrigerator and a rabbit was sitting there. "Well, what are yoa doing here?" she asked the little intruder. The rabbit said, "This is a Westinghouse isn't it?" "Yes," said the puzzled lady. HORMONE TO AID STERILE ANIMALS Wichita Daily Times A new hormone, called ESP, that is expected to put into production most of the sterile dairy and beef cattle, sews, ewes, mares, and small animals that are losing farmers and breeders vast sums annually is described in a featured article in Farm Journal for February. Although this hormone has been undergoing tests at 25 colleges, and by veterinarians in every section of the country, very little information about it had been reledsed until now. Its big use is to turn many sterile animals into breeders. In that respect most research men agree that it is more potent and uniform in action than any other hormone developed or tried so far. In cows that require treatment, 'it is injected into the neck muscle, and in two or three days, they come around to a normal breeding cycle. At Alabama. Polythechnic Institute, Dr. W. J. Gibbons treated 150 dairy cows from several herds. Nearly 94 percent responded after one injection, and the rest after a second injection. At Michigan State College, Dr. George Moore tried the hormone on about 100 cows with breeding troubles, including mummified fetuses and pyometra, the presence of pus. After one injection the cows expelled the fetuses, and three out of four cows suffering from pyometra cleared up so they could be bred. In Tennessee Dr. R. J. Williams„ a veterinarian, tried ECP on ewes during the summer months—their off breeding season. During one experiment he injected 48 head, including lambs under a year, ewes with lambs at side, yearlings, and aged ewes. Breeding that followed was successful in all cases. Every ewe had a lamb. The significance is that ewes thus treated can have two lamb crops a year instead of one, and the lambs can be produced for an earlier market. With hogs not much testing has been done, but there has been enough to suggest that a big percentage of the 3,000,000 sows and guts that fail to breed every year can be helped by ECP. Horses, dogs, fur-bearing animals all have responded to ECP at California State Polytechnic College in work by Dr. Gordon C. Stocking. Even an 11year-old greyhound produced pups. The Upjohn Company of Kalamazoo, Mich., which manufactures ECP, will begin to make it available to veterinarians on March 1. It is planned to supply the hormone only to veterinarians, because

it is believed that all animals should be examined and d agnosed before treatment. Not all sterility can be corrected by the new hormone, Dr. J. L. Davidson of the Upjohn Company points out. In dairy cattle, for example, about a third of it results from infections, diseases like brucellosis, and anatomical defects. But for the other twothirds, ECP holds out much promise. —Contributed by Otto Stehlik AGE-OLD QUESTION

People who wish they were as "strong as a horse" or as "contented as a cow" may be surprised to learn which mammal actually lives the longest. It is not the horse, not the cow, not the hippepctamus, not even the durable elephant. The longest-living mammal today is woman. The average girl born today can expect to live fully 71 years. The mighty elephant, once ranked as the longestliving mammal, now lags far behind with its 60-year life span. The hippo has an expectancy of 40; the horse 20-25; and the cow averages from nine to 15 years. Even men live longer than elephants these days, for boys born today will live an average of 65 years. The turtle, which is not a mammal, lives at least a century longer than human beings. But a turtle can't brag about its advanced age and women probably won't, so we men are safe. Adams in Minneapolis Tribune • 41 • Quizmaster Bob Hawk asked a contestant just back from a tour of Europe if he had seen much poverty. "Not only did I see it," said the returned traveler, "I brought some of it back with me!" Quoted in Malwaukee ajurnal ) • 41, •
