Zbyly dva zpfisoby cestovani, bud' letadlem v ptime lince do Houstonu anebo autobusem yelikou oklikou na severozapad, pak severovYchodne, pak rovnou severne. Zbytek nas, tiiadvaeet, poeitaje v to Dra. Dr. Werlin mi svetil dohled nad celou skupinou cestujicich. Meli jsme vyjeti v nedeli odpoledne, ale jedna z nejmladSich studentek, 191eta holka z Houstonu, nam v posledni chvili onemocnela. Zavolali jsme k ni lekafe a odjezd jsme °Malin o cely den.

Z Laredo at do Houstonu meli jsme zvlaStni teleznieni vuz. V San Antonio jsme zastavili na vedeti. Dr. Gam, naSe pacientka, jeji otec a ji sedeli jsme u jednoho stolku. Tim dostali jsme se do utSiho hovoru. Cestou do Houstonu ptisednul otec deveete na me sedadlo.

Stale jsem nechapal, at mile to podal v eislicich.

Ovkin, byly v tomto kraji rortroukny svetle ky lidi t y rdYch a nepodclajnYch, potom-

ci nekdePich eeskYch bratii, kteri do hor utikali a do stromii schovavali poklady svYch otcu. Ten bohatY vaSi pomoci nepotrebuje, ten si pomtae sam. Ale ten chudY, ten va,Si lasky a pomoci potrebuje." To bylo pro nas chude a y eene hladove deti nova evangelium, ktere zanechalo nesmazatelnY dojem. Tenkrate Masaryk mluvil k lidu o Skodlivosti alkoholu. MUSINGS OF THE EDITOR IN THE CZECH SECTION of this issue your editor tells about his experience of meeting a certain life insurance salesman. The story in itself is not important, but the lesson or the practical significance is worthy to be repeated The man did not call himself a salesman, but he introduced himself as "estate analyst." • • HERE US WHAT HE EXPLAINED to your editor: The average man, when he looks at his estate, finds it difficult to believe that the cost of clearing and transferring his .estate to his heirs will run from 18% to 45%. When a man examines the factors which cause estate shrinkage, he finds that it is caused by any one, or by a combination of several, or by all of the following obligations: doctor, nurses, hospital, medicine, undertaker cemetery lot, personal debts, income and personal property taxes, executor, lawyer, executo14,7s bond, court cost, and miscellaneous. • • SOMETHING HAPPENS TO EVERY estate after the owner dies and before his family receives it. The amount the family receives is never the amount the owner plans to leave. As a matter of fact, except in the case of very small inheritance, the estate does not come directly to the family. It passes into the hands of the administrators or the executors whose duty is to take certain legal steps to transfer the title of the property from the previous owner—who is now dead— to his family. • • THIS PERIOD OF ADMINISTRATION of an estate may be considered a temporary receivership under the supervision of a probate court. Only after the administrator has met all the estate obligations and charged the estate with the expenses incurred by the death of the former owner, is the estate "settled", turned over to the heirs. But the family gets only what is left after the obligations has been satisfied. • • IT IS HUMAN NATURE to put the best foot forward and to think in terms of the estate as it is today. We go back in our minds to the old saying, "death and taxes are certain," and we feel that

nothing much can be done about it. But here is where the man, whom your editor chanced to meet, the "estate analyst" pointed out that something can be done and is being done by every thinking man who has a substantial or a large estate.

ESTATE PROTECTION INSURANCE was the term that my "estate analyst" used in his talk. Notice that the estate analyst did not talk about selling so much of life insurance. His approach was to bring the estate owner face to face with the situation that is certain to arise, to lead the owner to think ' honestly, to show the estate owner that the business of dying is an expensive business which automatically throws the estate into debt, and to suggest an interesting and effective solution. The solution to clear the estate of its debt is to use estate protection insurance, which is life insurance. ♦ • WITH ESTATE PROTECTION INSURANCE, the same death which brings with it an expensive array of bills and obligations also matures the life insurance policy or certificate, and the money from the insurance will be at hand to pay off in cash immediately all the liens against the estate. With life insurance the owner pays the future debt, the "death mortgage" against his estate out of current income. The life insurance costs about 3 per cent a year on the "death mortgage" facing the estate. About three per cent a year now will save approximately 30 per cent of the property. EVER SINCE YOUR EDITOR listened to this talk about estate protection, the thought had been returning to his mind: Why don't we stress this type of protection? We keep talking and talking about the value of life insurance, but we don't present it to our prospects in a proper manner. We still talk that everyone needs to cover the cost of dying, and that the bills must be paid, but we dont' explain that the SPJST has a way of reducing the bills. It seems that we still consider the SPJST to be only a

glorified burial society. which is a carol mental attitude. THE PROBLEM OP ESTATE CLEARANCE with preper amount of ordinary life insurance, if handled by competent and well-trained solicitors, could place on our books several million additional insurance in one year. Of course, we couldn't do it with $500 or $1,000 certificates. We would have to raise the amount of insurance of individual risks as other fraternal societies have already done. If the SPJST cannot increase the average face amount of the new certificates, if the SPJST cannot break away from the traditional $1,000, $500, or even $250 per applicant, the SPJST wil probably be struggling along, just holding its own, while other fraternal societies and all the life insurance companies will benefit from our own stupidity. • • THE DEATH MORTGAGE STANDS today against every estate. We have hundreds of well-to-do members whose property will some day pass to their children. Have we ever thought to stress to them estate . protection through additional life insurance with the SPJST? Where is our state organizer to do it? Where are our leaders to preach it? What will happen at the next convention when the vote is taken on increasing the maximum risk? • YOUR EDITOR STANDS pat on his assertion that we should eliminate the maximuth of $7,500. And he goes even further by saying that we should not stop at the maximum of $10,000. Please don't get excited that we are going to bite more than we can chew. Your editor believes that it is our solemn obilgation and duty to secure applications in any amount needed by the applicant., but if it is felt that anything over $10,000 would be taking too big a risk for the SPJST, the Supreme Lodge should be empowered to secure reinsurance. That's a standard procedure everywhere with every progressive society.

thinking of them in terms of a group— except the politicians. They, of course, have realized their possibilities for exploitation. "We want people to realize the contribution old people can make as a group. In every great civilization but ours they have been considered an asset. But we've made them into a liability. "There are two points to bear in mind: First, we are the only purposeful group that has leisure, Second, we are the only leisure group (as opposed to the rich leisure group) which is disciplined and experienced. As a group, we have a valuable contribution to make to any community." When the original group began recruiting members, a lot of old folks were frankly skeptical. Some felt there was a stigma attached to it. They were suffering enough now at the hands of time. Why advertise their age? But once in, they became enthusiastic members. One •ldtimer, a veteran member of the ccurthhouse-steps gang, w anted to know only one thing: "Do you suppose you could find someone to play Chinese checkers with me?" They could and did. They meet, every other Sunday afternoon at the First Methodist church. A number of other churches and the Public Library have invited the club to use their building, but they stick to the First Methodist because it was the church which first opened its doors to them. Half of Bloomington has tried to attend a meeting, but to no avail. What do they do? "Well," explains Dr. Beck, "we assume first that everyone should know everyone else, because we're an intimate, sharing group, so we see that any newcomers get acquainted with everyone. "Then we usually have something in the way of stunts or sketches, which are written and acted by the members. Often we dramatize something from McGuffey's Reader, like 'The Last Day of School.' "We have speakers from the University and elsewhere who talk on a variety of interesting subjects. "Perhaps the most interesting speaker we've had so far." Dr. Beck laughed, "was the man who talked on 'How to Live to be a Hundred.' " The only dues the members pay is one penny for each year of their age. To carry out its objectives, the club promotes hobbies, community parties and television and radio programs. They have (Continued on page 23.)

1r ESTNIK— WEST, TEXAS

YOU CAN'T COUNT HAPPINESS Al Zenger is our neighbor. He lives upon the hill that looks out over all our countryside. He raises chickens and SO we buy fresh eggs from him. Al must be 75 or 80 but he's still under the impression that twelve and thirteen are the same, or else that a dozen means thirteen. The first time that I went for eggs at Al's, I stepped inside and said, "I'd like a dozen eggs" and handed him my pail. He went into a cool dark room, where they were kept, and came back to the kitchen, to count them out. As he counted them I was watching causually, but not checking them. I shared, somewhat, the satisfaction that was Al's, because I, too, now had a dozen nice fresh eggs. When I reached home, my wife counted them and said, "Al gave you thirteen eggs." I counted them myself. "That's right," I said. "He must have missed the count. I'll tell him when I go up next time." A few days later I went up to Al's for a dozen more. "Al, you gave me thirteen eggs last time." His sharp eyes twinkled a bit suspiciously as I thought afterwards. "Well, well!" said he. "That is a joke on me." He counted out the eggs and, after short chat, I went on home. There were thirteen eggs again. Since then I've told him almost every time about his inability to count. "A weakness that any man, as old as you, should try to overcome." It never seems to do a bit of good. To him, a dozen means thirteen and I presume it always will. He's too old now to learn new tricks. That's Al. Yes, that's the kind of neighbor that he is. Take strawberry season, now. He grows the loveliest and most wonderful berries in the world. He grows a lot of them and some he has for sale. Last season, I went up to buy' two quarts*. I had two berry-boxes in a small peach basket. My wife said that I could handle them much better that way, in the car. I thought it was a good idea, too. It provided to be much better than we thought. Al had the berries picked. He poured them out until they filled the two quart boxes, and then, in spite of my feeble remonstrance, he poured those large, red, luscious berries until the basket, too, was filled. To Al, that was two quarts. To me it was three or more. The only way that I could get somewhere near the quantity I asked for was to hand him just the berry-box, and even then, when it was handed back,

It looked like a red pyramid of berries. Well, that's the way he is in everything. He does the same with hiS raspberries. One day, I heard a friend remonstrate. "Look here, Al," he said, "the other people who raise berries around here won't like it if you give so much more for a quart than they do." I saw Al's jaw clamp down. "I raise those berries to enjoy the feeling that I get from giving a good measure. When I used to buy berries at the store, I vowed if ever I sold berries of my own, I'd heap the boxes up." Yes, that's 'the way he is and, like as not, his wife will aid and abet him by bringing out an armful of flowers for us to carry home. What can you do with a man like that? Nothing. I'll tell you what we're beginning to think. We feel that he's the wisest man around. He started out to be a good neighbor, and he found one secret of happiness. Is generosity a quality to cultivate? Well, when I see Al, and note the fun he has because of it, I'm sure that it is.—Condensed from Christian Herald. ) &• BIG WAR UNLIKELY BEFORE 1960 The popular belief that major war periods recur at intervals of about 22 years has a scientific basis, according to the Foundation for the Study of Cycles, Riverside, Conn. "Major periods of internatibnl conflict are, therefore, at least partially predictable," acording to Edward R. Dewey, director of the Foundation. "If the patterns of the past continue, the next few years are perhaps the least likely years for large-scale international conflict. "But do not let this lull anyone into any false sense of security," he said. Emphasizing his belief that we should be constantly on the alert, he warned: "Every year past 1953 or 1954 increases the danger and, by 1960, international conflict should be quite active if tendencies of the past continue. "The chief usefulness of the information contained in the report is to help us realize that continued peace is not the normal experience of mankind. "The more important implications of this study and others now being made on international conflict are that they may throw some light on the more fundamental causes of war and may eventually enable us to minimize them. Same day it may be found that mankind at certain periods is more excitable and commits acts which lead to wars. "Who knows," Mr, Dewey asked, "it

Old Timers With New Interests (Continued from page 21.) presented several radio TV programs, written and produced by the members themselves. They are usually in the form of panel discussions on the personal arid sociological problems of old age. They did one humorous sketch on TV which was the talk of Bloomington. It was called "Grandpa Needs a Job" and it satirized the tendency of industry to retire people arbitrarily on age rather than capability. During the past year and a half the fame of the club has spread to such an extent that inquiries have poured in from all over the country and even from abroad. The writers want to know the same thing — how to start a club in their own communities. "The corespondence has gotten so big I can't take care of it," said Dr. Beck, as he brou ght out a thick folder of unanswered letters. "Dozens of these letters are from old people who want to move to Bloomington, just so they can belong to the club. They even want me to help them find a house or a farm they can buy." Dr. William King, director of the newly founded Indiana Bureau of Geriatrics, called the club "a pattern for a revolution in attitudes toward aging on the part of people everywhere." Maurice 0. Hunt, state welfare director, investigated the club and said, “Such happy elderly people mean fewer problems for the department and for the family homes and nursing institutions in which they round out their lives." "Among us," says Dr. Beck, "the fear of growing old in loneliness and idleness is gone." might be found that this human eXcitability is due to physical changes in our atmosphere caused by changes in the nature or the quality of solar emanations?" The report points out, for example, that the length of the main war cycle is equal to the length of the double sun-spot cycle. Information in regard to cycles in war can probably never be used to forecast the exact year of war's coming, Mr. Dewey said. "In the past," he stated, "there have been exceptions to the cycles and there will be exceptions in the future. Cycles represent tendencies." The Foundation's 40-page report gives a detailed annual record of war from 599 B. C. forward; it was prepared by Prof. Raymond H. Wheeler.

DELEGATES' FORUM Question:—Dea • Editor: I read in the Czech Section of the Vestnik that you are willing to answer any parliamentary inquiry. Would you please answer in the English Section some of the points that are not clear to us? For instance, can we suspend the By-laws by a two-thirds majority? Answer—The t e r m By-laws—also spelled bylaws, in general—is somewhat a broad term covering agreements of the members to run an organization. Bylaws usually cover such details as the number forming a quorum, the rights and duties of members, fees or dues, amendments, and order of business. You may suspend a rule or an established procedure to expedite the order of business. You cannot suspend the form of government of the organization. You cannot suspend the constitutional parts of the By-laws. If your By-laws are worded so that you should start your meetings with a quorum of 10 members at two o'clodk, you can suspend the twoo'clock rule to make it three or four, but you cannot suspend the quorum rule. If your By-laws specify that a quorum of two-thirds of all the members must vote a sale or a purchase of property, YOU cannot suspend the quorum requirement and transact business with less than two-thirds members present. Question:---We had a very ticklish question coming up for vote. Many of the members felt reluctant to express themselves either in debate Or by voting. What would you suggest that could be done to allow the members to express their vote without embarrassment? Answer:—While the main motion, is pending, someone should move that the vote on this question be by ballot. This is called an incidental motion, is not debatable, and requires only a majority of vote. Question:—When we are making reports of any kind in the meeting should we address the chairman and then the Brothers and Sisters? Answer:— When one addresses the chairman that is sufficient. At a convention, where every minute counts, it should be the rule. We often hear speakers address the chair and then the honored guests, collectively or individually, and the audience. This is simply a formality and intended only to show respect to ranking visitors. If the speaker does include the honored guests he should be sure to address the presiding officer first and then the guests according to their rank. In the SPJST lodge meetings it is sufficient to address the presiding officer and have all questions directed to him.

Question:—We had a motion which was partially good, but it would need patching up in so many places before it would be acceptable. What is the best way to improve it? Should we first kill it and then make a better or a new motion? Answer:—It is often being done that way, but it prolongs the meeting, creates unpleasant feeling, sometimes a disgust with the whole issue. There is a better method: Someone should move a substitute motion while the main motion is pending. If the substitute motion is adopted it becomes the main motion. As anonunced in the last issue of the Vestnik, the editor will try to answer any parliamentary inquiry, eitht,:r in Czech or in English, or in both languages, without revealing the sender's name. It is encouraging to note that the first questions were submitted in English even though the announcement was made in Czech only. Keep it going, young members. ) 4, "BAGS" UNDER EYES

Many people are often worried because they have "bags" under the eyes. The condition is often seen in elderly persons. It apparently has not been made the subject of any special study by medical men and does not have a specific name, according to a discussion of it in The Journal of the American Medical Association. The condition is not necessarily due to kidney trouble or heart disease, although it may be seen in such illnesses and may be observed also in cirrhosis of the liver. It' is not necessarily a sign cf debauchery and dissipation, either. The condition sometimes runs in families, one authority points out. The condition seems to come and go, or the size of the bags varies with the season and the time of day. Allergy may be a cause, and if the bags get worse in fall and winter, food allergy may be suspected. Fatigue at the end of the day or a "rundown constitution" may aggravate the bags, especially in elderly persons. The tissues of the lower eyelids are normally so loose and full of blood vessels that even slight changes in the state of the elasticity of the skin and other factors relating to the persons general condition may lead to local stagnation of blood in the blood vessels and to swelling of the tisues under the eyes. The wasting of skin and the tissues under the skin which is one of the afflictions of old age may play a part in causing bags in the elderly., — Science Service.

Wednesday, March 12, 1952 the two Czech Stage Plays given at Pokrok No. 88, on which I have heard some very good comments, but I had to go to Crockett unexpectedly ahead of schedule to play head nurse to my daughter a n d and granddaughter. Mother and baby are doing fine; as well as my thirteen months old grandson. Mercy me! I know that old age was creeping up on me, but it never dawned on me that within a period of two years I'd be a mother-in-law and a grandmother of two beautiful children. Well they say, "Life Begins at Forty." So I guess I'vel got a few more surprises coming. By the way, do you want to know an oddity about this granddaughter of mine whose name is Glenda Cheryl Turner? She's the first great granddaughter of the first grand daughter of the first daughter of the first daughter who is Mrs. Alois Vaja. Now "ain't" that something? Brother and Sister Louis Masaryk dropped by to see me at the Lodge the other day with their charming tenmonth-old daughter, Sister Anna Masaryk told me that after nineteen years they are starting a new family. That's a grand idea for what's more lovelier than a pair of chubby hands and feet pattering around to keep the grown ups out of mischief. Ha! Ha! The Masaryks have a grown son and daughter and twin granddaughters besides the new addition to the family. Congratulations to you and yours! You're very nice and drop around to see us again soon. Heavens above! I'm getting to sound like a gossip columnist. Our Junior Club is planning an amateur program soon so I will give you the details after their meeting on Friday, March 14th The Czech Dramatic Circle is sponsoring a Czech play given at Stefanik Lodge on Sunday, March 16. The proceeds will go to the "Narodni Sdruzeni" for the benefit of the underpriveliged children of Czechoslovakia. So, please all of you accept our invitation to attend this play and Jatrnice Supper given on March 16 on Sunday. Thanks a Million! Now, as a closing thought I wish all of you good health and hapiness. Sincerely, Amelia (Vaja) Sturm P. S.: I must add that I certainly enjoyed seeing and reading the seven letters from seven different SPJST Lodges in the English Section last week. It's just wonderful! Come, fellow men, let's keep adding until someday the Vestnik English Section will have all the branches of SPJST represented. Fraternally, Amelia Sturm
