Neni ta redaktorska prace jen sestavovani elankti, ale take hodne Cteni, hodne hledani a take trochu vlastniho hloubani. A katclk takov' dopis vezme pa, deset a2 patnact minut a stale to ptipoie das by mel b'ti venovan organu, aby byl lepgim a odpadly nafky, e ho 2adnY neate. MUSINGS OF THE EDITOR BEFORE TAKING UP other matters of general interest, your editor would like to comment on the number of special meetings which had been held here ana there. It is true that we have the convention real soon and that the members would naturally be inclined to talk about many things. But there seems to be something else than the convention. We may say that the idea of having several organizational districts has something to do with the extra meetings. So far, there were seven meetings of this type; three in Wharton county, one in Houston, one in Taylor, one in Corpus Christi, one in Needville, and there are to be two more in near Inture. The next district meeting will be in Holland, comprising six surrounding counties. The Holland meeting is next Sunday, May 4. The other meeting is planned by the Southwestern District shortly before our convention and it may likely b, held again in Corpus, unless the lodges around San Antonio insist to have it there. THE MEETING HELD IN HILLJE on the 20th of April was well attended, admirably conducted, and thoughtfully arranged to bring out many interesting points in discussion. Five topics of discussion stood out clearly: permanent headqaurters for . the Order, Home for the Aged, improved sickness and accident protection, better field men under a state organizer, and the future conventions with better system of representation. One thing was noticeable -- the absence of members from several small lodges. That point should be taken up at every district meeting to Work cut a plan which would bring to the district meetings several representatives from every lod g e in the district. + ♦

IF SOMEONE POINTED to a brick will and asked you which brick is the most important, you, would consider his question slightly queer. Bricks are small things. But taken together they make a strong wall which may tower upward Many stories. Each brick is important in its support of many tons of weight above it.

OUR JOBS, OUR LIVES, even our membership in the SPJST are like that. We sometimes feel that our personal work or our personal interest in the home lodge or the entire SPJST Is not important. Sometimes we envy those who are leaders, who do greater things. We even let ourselves down mentally and emotionally, and fall into a pessimistic pattern of thinking, "Ala, what's the use. Others are running things to their ing, and it doesn't make much difference anyway,' for I am just nobody, I can't do much."

TO STIMULATE INTEREST in the work of the lodge, and to maintain the unity of the membership, various plans must be followed and carried out. There must be a great variety of entertainments. These things cannot be left to be worked out by the officers alone, or by a few members. Every progressive lodge must have at least five, six, or even more committees. There should be mother and daughter meetings, father and son meetings, annual banquets, family nights, dinner dances, evening dances, honor nights, birthday parties, picnics, district gatherings, amateur plays, moTHERE IS A LOT MORE to my mem- vies, card parties, bingo games, fish fries, bership in the SPJST than just belong bazaars, and so on. • • to it and getting by. SHOULD OLDER FOLKS LIVE ALONE? • In the Czech section there has been a series of discussions regarding the topic of providing a Rest Home for Older Mem bers. Your editor found and article on the same subject, written by Paul H. Fluck, M. D., and published in the March is-me of Journal of Living. This doctor says that older folks should live alone, and he also tells why. It may not be the answer to our discussions, but it may set you thinking. e Was the Declaration of Independence written only for young folks? As a family doctor with a lot of older patients on my list, I have often wondered. No age limit was mentioned for liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Still, in too many American homes, both seem to end at 65. Of course, I have met happy old folks. have lugged my medical grip into hospitable homes where the grandfather can light his pipe and where little girls kiss their grandma good night. But for every one of these congenial households I can remember at least three others where Grandma and Grandpop were miserable -- where they had little free. dour or happiness, where it seemed almost as though thy were being held for a ransom. In particular, I remember Aunt Julie and Billy Mathews, who clinched the argument and convinced me that older ,folks should live alone. ` Aunt Julie sagged back in her chair. Now that the dishes were done she could rest — unless the baby cried! Then the telephone rang and Aunt Julie hobbled over to answer it. "Yes, Clara. Yes. I'll take care of it, Clara. Good-by." Aunt Julie's gray head hung heavier and her tortured knees trembled. Things were always hazy, but they had never been so hazy as this. She glanced back at her chair, but she musn't sit down now. Clara was bringing the girls over for a hand of bridge. She would have to' hurry to straighten up 'the living room, in time. When I stopped an hour later to make 'my regular weekly call, the card party was going full blast. As usual, Aunt Julie had scurried upstairs. Her hairdo and her clothing wouldn't pass inspection by fashinonwise eyes. Now, holding the baby, trying to quiet a tantrum, the old lady looked more bony, more deplorable than ever. Aunt Julie had been a husky woman once. She had hoed her patch and reared six young ones of her own. But at 80 she had her hands full keeping Cla,ra's house and taking care of little !

Sammy. Aunt Julie was held for ransom! Ten years before she had confided to me that she was going to live with Clara. Keeping her own house was too much for her tottery legs, and the offer she had for her little stone cottage tinkled in her ears. With that money in the bank she could pay her own way. She would never have to "go on the welfare." Scarcely two years later, I helped Julie fill out those welfare forms. Her savings had paid off Clara's mortgage and bought George a new car. Now, practically penniless, ,she had to ask the county for help. She was granted a $25 allotment each month to cover her living expenses. Clothing? Nobody ever thought about Aunt Julie's clothing. Doctors aren't suposeci to notice things like that, but Aunt Julie's underwear was nothing but rags. And she wore the same rags month after month. Aunt Julia has paid her ranson now, but I think of her whenever one of my elderly patients asks my advice about going to live with a son or daughter. For years I was always too professional. I used to shake my head and say, "I'm afraid that is your own problem. Do you really want to go?" But I know better now. Twelve years ago, in his little ivy-covered bungalow, old Billy Mathews answered that question with words that still ring in my ears. He was stroking the long silky hair of his magnificent collie. "No, Doc", he solemnly said, "not on your life. I don't want to go. This is our home and it will always be home. But you know that Hannah isn't well enough to keep house." So Billy sold their bungalow, sent his dog off to the SPCA and• limped with his wife over to the big white house on Main Street. A year later Hannah died of apoplexy and Billy Mathews was left alone to bear the sneers of his daughter-in-law. Billy stood it as long as he could -for more than three years. Then one day he started out to find a new home. When the state police picked him up not far from Allentown, he refused to tell them his name. He said he forgot who he was. They sent Billy to the state hospital and he was happy there until his son found out about him and brought him home. After that things got worse than ever. He couldn't draw his own money out of the bank any longer, and his heartless

daughter-in-law denied him even a chew I of tobacco. It was gunning season, and Pete's gun leaned against the wall in i the shed. You know the rest. Billy's daughter-in-law collected his ransom. * * So now I'm no longer so professional. I sit down in the most solid chair in the room. I park my long legs on the nearest table. .And I give those old folks a sales talk that puts the skids under this ransom business in a hurry. I try, when it is possible, to pair off an ailing old lady who owns her own home, with a healthier old lady who needs one. I try to find board for a cultivated old gentleman with a widow just a little younger. I'm the best promoter for old-folks' homes in town, and I try and try and try to keep all of my grayhaired patients from making Aunt Julie's and Uncle Billy's 'mistake. To be happy, old folks should be indei pendent. Independence is possible if they I have their own homes, their own apart: ments, or even their 'own rooms in a first, class old-folks5 home. Liberty and the pursuit of happiness, which are guaranteed in the Declaration of Independence, are hard to achieve in someone else's home. I have been reminded that television and radio have made life much happier for oldsters. But in my private practice I have never found that any of our newfangled contrivances have anything on a dog, a canary, or a big red-headed parrot. Old folks need love and affection, and to this present moment, no radio or television manufacturer has produced a set that can provide affection. Nine out of ten old people would prefer a cocker spaniel any day. The argument that old folks shouldn't live alone is as foolish as the argument that they aren't capable of handling their own money. Sharing someone else's home means sharing the bathroom being exposed to someone else's colds, sore throat and bronchitis. Living in a home where there are young children means baby sitting, toys on the floor -- which can break a hip - and disturbance at all hours. Most important, sharing someone else's home means sharing the responsibility for bills, interest on the mortgage, and a thousand and one other financial drains. Many old folks have found —to their sorrow — that living in someone else's home costs more than maintaining their own! Living alone means providing for oneself only. Living alone means hav)Continued from page 20)

If then she cries loudly, "It's the baby. He has hiccups. Call the doctor!" you had better call him. It may turn out to be unnecessary, but let the doctor explain that. Here is another tip. Don't drag yourself in the front door in the e yeing and announce that you had a tough day at the office. That is like asking a drowning man if he has been in swimming lately. Better not complain if dinner is a bit late, either. Just try to rock along, taking the bad with the worse. It won't last forever. Pediatricians say that whenever you pick up the baby, you should be calm and relaxed. Any tension will transmit itself, upset him and perhaps cause colic, which is to be avoided like the plague. Mothers understand this, and it is the justification for baby talk. So if, by any chance, you happen to be the one selected to get up for the two o'clock feeding, try to get out of bed in a pleased mood. Hum a bit as you warm the bottle. Smile at the baby as you change him. Say something nice in a baby talk. The baby will appreciate it, and later in the day maybe you can find someone at the office to bawl out. If you feel like cryin, cry; but know it is the tired nerves that are crying, and don't wonder why you are so foolish; don't feel ashamed of yourself. If you cannot sleep, don't care.
