SNIZOVANA DOCASNA POJISTKA
Rozhodne bude to pro nas, eleny, lacin'Si, kdyZ bychom Podobnemu vYkladu venovali pfil Vestniku, nea kdybychom k tomu museli miti ptil dne sjezdoveho easu. Napred vYrner pojmu — definici — co znamend vyjadreni doeasna, pojistka (term insurance). Je to smlouva, kontrakt, poskytujici finaneni obranu v pripadu iimrti v ureite dobe, ktera je jmenovena ye srnlouve, v certifikatu. Takova, smlouva neposkytuje Zadnou ochranu v pripadu, ae elen prelije stanovenou lhatu. Je tedy doeaSna pojistka velice pribliZna pojigeni majetku proti 'Skodam ohne, vichrice, blesku a jinYm Zivelnim pohromam. Jestli pohrorna se nedostavi,
smlouva po ureite dobe yyprSi a nema ceny. Vkchno Zivotni poji gteni je "aZ" pojiS't.eni dojde jiste stari, as prijde - zubata, as nas to nebude. Dodasna Zivotni pojistka je kombinace toho "kdyby" a toho "at". Tretinu zaplati hotove a d ye tretiny, $10,000 me splatiti do 10 let.
Kdy elovek ma velice malo, must dbati, aby to male eastka ptljmu vystadila co nejdele. Aby veak nekdo si nemyslel, ae doeasna pojistka je to nejlep gi, co si 'Olen mute koupiti, nutno upozorniti, ae kaZdY certifiket a kaZcia, pojistka mail sve nevYhody. Doeasna pojistka neni vYjimkou.

Trinacteho kvetna tohoto roku bude tomu dvacet let, co ukoneil svuj iviot jeden z nejpopularnej gich deskoamerickYch novinata, samotat z "Pazderny" u Granger, Lou W. Dongres. MUSINGS OF THE EDITOR ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL district meeting was held in the spacious home of Tyrs Lodge NO. 80 at Holland on the first Sunday in May. It was the second meeting of the central district, designed by the preconvention By-laws Committee as District No. 2; and it was the eighth meeting held so far by the various districts. THESE DISTRICT MEETINGS are for the purpose to add more zest and interest in the affairs of our Order. It was started by the officers of the Supreme Lodge a number of years back, first by calling together the local solicitors, then by inviting to the solicitors' meetings other members and visitors, and now by holding these sectional meetings for the enjoyment and enlightment of every SPJST member that wishes to come. MANY LOCAL LODGES desire to have these district meetings to be held according to some permanent plan. For that reason, many lodges suggested that the state be divided into organizational districts. The By-laws Committee approved of the idea, And as was evidenced by the meeting at Holland, the plan works splendidly, although the whole plan is very much of a temporary nature and waiting for the support of the officers of the Supreme Lodge and for the final authorization by the convention. • • EVERY ONE FULLY AGREES that the district meetings can do a world of good, if properly conducted. For example, the meeting at Holland offered opportunity to discuss so many interesting and vital points that nearly everybody was pleased with the discussions and explanations. All the debate and arguments were masterly handled by Brother Reuben Lesikar, temporary president of the district. He outlined the points of discus-. "sion—the latest recommendations of the By-laws Committee—and all the following discussions adhered to the outline suggested by Brother Lesikar. It is a fact that a presiding officer can make any meeting to be a success or a complete failure. With his well organized and skillfully timed topics, Brother Le,sikar, member of Praha Lodge No. 29,

MOTHERS OF THE WILD Whenever * the, river, beside my plantation, goes into flood, I spend much time on its waters getting my livestock and game out of danger. On one such expedition I witnessed the heroic behavior of the finest — and the ugliest — wilderness mother I have ever seen. She was a wild razorback hog. Built like a huge hyena, with a long sharp snout, she looked fierce indeed. When I sighted her from my canoe she was marroned upon a big log wedged into the crotch of a water oak, and huddled up to her flank were nine little ones. The savage old creature knew well that the log would soon be swept away by the fast-rising water. She could easily have saved herself — wild razorbacks can swim miles — but she would not leave her babies to perish. Half mile across the water stood a piece of high ground. She looked at it, as if appraising the peril incurred in swimming to it. Her decision made, she grunted assurance to her precious pigs and tenderly nuzzled them into a huddle. on the log. Next she plunged in, swam around to show her babies how easily it was done, and climbed back on the log. Again grunting motherly counsel, she cautiously herded them into the water. Then, making sure all were with her, she swam slowly to the ridge, keeping the tiny pigs in the lee of her great flank to break the force of the current for them. It was beautiful to watch that grim old monster mothering her babies across the •threatening tide to safety. While following the trail of a doe and fawn I came upon a story, written in tracks, that told of the valor of wild motherhood. The doe had been confronted by a cottonmouth moccasin, which could easily have killed her litle one. She had backed up and, holding all four sharp hoofs together like a sheaf of spears, had repeatedly leaped upon the serpent, cutting him to ribbons. In the depths of a river swamp I came across a baby squirrel, on the limb of a J - ( dbud maple, munching a supper of tender buds. This adventurous elf was a bout 30 feet from the den-tree, from which I could hear his mother talking to him. Suddenly, from a cypress nearby, a barred owl launched himself toward the little squirrel. The mother gave sharp bark of alarm; in a split second the infant dropped underneath the lin b and hung like the man on the flying trapeze. As he executed this amazing maneuver, the owl shot over the spot where his prey had been. By the Lima i t. rniilrl t.nrn I h p 1701111P'StOr hicl

SAVE YOUR VISION We were bowling along on • II. S. No. I when it happened. My friend suddenly slumped down in the driver's seat. His hands relaxed and the steering wheel. The car swerved to the left, straight at and approaching truck. Jchn regained control just in time. The heavy truck roared past. We had missed it by inches. White and trembling, John pulled over to the side of the road. I was pretty limp myself. "A dizzy spell," he explained. "I almost passed out." It took several visits to doctors for John to discover what ailed him. The diagnosis was almost as dramatic as our near-accident. It was eyestrain. Fitted with a pair of glasses, John has had no more dizzy spells. This experience started me thinking, then investigating. I learned that eyestrain may or may not cause pain in the eyes. It may blur your vision or make you see double. Or, as in John's case, all its effects may be felt in other parts of the body. Eye trouble can develop much more easily in those who have been suffering from general fatigue or from anxiety. A child convalescing from an acute illness, a mother nursing her infant, a man worrying about business—all are candidates for this deceptive ailment. The best protection against eyestrain is, of course, a knowledge of scientific eye care. Some persons think that eyes can be replaced. A staff member of one of the country's great eye hospitals encounters this misunderstanding among persons who are making their wills. Every so often he hears from someone who wants to will his eyes to the holpital, under the impression that a whole eye can be transplanted from one individual to another. "I hate to disillusion them," the doctor admitted, "but I have to tell them the truth. The term 'eye transplant,' which has been so much publicized, really means 'corneal transplant.' In other words, we can replaCe the damaged transparent window on the outside of one eye by grafting on a piece of 'tissue from another eye. But to put a whole new eye into an empty socket, and connect up all the complicated nerves and muscles and blood vessels, is still beyond us. There are no spare eyes available." Our eyes today must meet the exorbitant demands of a complex and artificial civilization. Consider reading. We Americans do a staggering amount of it. Each year we go through 181/2 billion newspapers, 4 Ik billion magazines, and
(By L. M. O'Connor) 450 million books. We take reading for granted. But before 1890 the majority of our population was engaged in farming or other outdoor work, with little need or opportunity to do much reading. When we stare all day at things near by we put an unnatural strain on the eye muscles. Distance vision can, of course, cause eyestrain, too. We pay five billion visits to the movies every year, to say nothing of the time we spend at television sets. Our forefathers went to bed -at sundown and got up at dawn. We, drive our motorcars along highways at 50, 60, or 70 mph. Grandfather jogged over country roads ih a horse oand buggy, content with 10 mph. i i-Te didn't have to estimate distances and speeds in a maze of traffic, and do it with clockwork precision. He had no blinding headlights glaring in his face. He didn't use his eyes under high nervous tension, aware that a mistake in judgment. might mean his sudden death or injury. Yes, the demands on our eyes today arc exorbitant. But eyestrain need not be beared too much. According to the National Society for the Prevention of Blindness, "Eyes that are free from disease will never wear out from too much use." Eyestrain will not ruin your eyes, but it can ruin your digestion, nerves, and efficiency for as long as it is neglected. To insure you and your family against this and other dangers, visual research has evolved scientific rules for everyday eye care. For good eye health, try to maintain a good level of general health. Remember that the eye is a part of the body, and that there is a continuous giveand-take between the two. Make sure that your sleep, diet, exercise, and recreation are adequate. Do your reading or other close work under a comfortable light coming from above and behind. interrupt close work, like sewing, typing, and the like, every halfhour or so and rest your eyes by looking into the distance for a minute or two. You'll find you can get more done with less effort in this way. Wear protective goggles when engaged in any dangerous work or hobby. If you spend much time in strong sunlight, wear good sunglasses. Cheap lenses, marred by air bubbles, ripples, and other imperfections, can prove to be an expensive bargain. .'void staring into the
sun, into a powerful sun lamp, or into a welder's arc. To prevent eye accidents among your children, try to find them as much supervised recreation as possible. Publichealth officials say that 67 percent of all eye injuries suffered by youngsters occur during unsupervised play. Most kids don't stop to think that fireworks, BB guns, and sharp sticks can cause partial or total blindness. Give boys particulait attention, because they have three times as many eye accidents as girls. All children in grades 7 through 9 need extra care also, since this is the peak period for eye damage. When you get a speck of dirt in your eye, pull down the upper lid over the lower, so that the tears can wash away the particle. Or try washing it out With an eye cup, using tap water or a fresh solution of boric acid. If the object comes out and the eye still feels irritated, it's all right to apply a drop of mineral oil with an eye dropper. But don't rub -your eyes or dab with a none-too-clean handkerchief. If the speck won't come out, don't fuss with it. You are likely to make tiny scratches on the eyeball into which germs can find their way. The result may be a disastrous infection. This is a job for a nurse or your family physician. If they can't handle it they'll refer you to a specialist. If perfume, shaving lotion, soap, lime, acid, or any other chemical gets into your eye, wash it out at once with tap water. Use an eye cup, or hold your head under a faucet. If the eye becomes inflamed obtain prompt medical care. Consult your physician about any inflamation of the eyes or lids. Most people think "pink eye" is a minor matter. Actually, this phrase covers any inflamation, from mild conjuctivitis to blinding glaucoma. Prompt treatment by a physician is vital. Remember that boric acid is a mild antiseptic and is not effective against a serious infection. Excessive use of either boric acid or of preparations containing silver can irritate the eye. Daily dosing with, silver over a long period can produce 'pewter eye" (argyria), a leaden discoloration of the whites of the eyes. This is a permanent condition for which there is no cure. Go at onceb to a physician whenever you have a serious eye accident. See an eye specialist whenever you develop such symptoms as chronic eye fatigue, persistent headaches, blurring of vision, in(Continued on page 23.)

They say that in the native land from which you come when you have a festival; and, as people say, you don't mess it up With speeches. In other words, you enjoy yourself when the time comes to enjoy yourself and I hope that soon you can return to that aspect of this evening. 'It is grand, of course, to know that you are seizing hold of an mportunity to keep alive,—and more than alive, to keep it growing—a tradition that has been one of the proudest in the history of civilization. You have heard what that tradition is. You have heard why you should be proud of it. I suppose you realize that it is only Ii viral that the University of Texas should be host to an occasion such as this_ Any great university sees itself as•the heir, as the direct descendant, of all cultures of all times. We regret to say that our play "Deli Slovace" did not go off as scheduled for 3 p. in. on May 11th due to the fact that (Ile of our leading players, Karel Matejka, suddenly became ill Wednesday afterneon before play and was rushed to the hospital for an emergency appendectomy. He was given two blood transfusions and is now doing better, even though he is in a very weakend condition. We never know what will happen from one day to the next. He was at the
rehearsal the Tti-Et;day la:fore the play feeling just fine and playing his role to perfection. It would have been utterly impossible for someone else to learn the role in two days as it was a long role with lots of singing, so we decided that the next best thing to do would be to Postpone it until June 1st, hoping that he will have recuperated by that time. We all wish him a speedy recovery. With a cast as large as ours, something is bound to happen, and we got a triple dose of it. First it was Rudy Sefcik, who became violently ill and had to be rushed to the hos pital. Then Amos Kadlecek called* me that he got a badly sprained ankle when he fell off the ladder and would not be able to dance, so I was lucky to get Steve Kelley as a substitute and then the last blow was Karel Ma tej ka. Well, here's hoping that nothing else happens and that we can have our play June 1st and then again on the night of June 23rd during the convention. Harriette Earl. ) •( Houston, Texas Greetings, Friends: Hope all of you are enjoying this beautiful weather. We, at Stefanik Lodge are taking advantage of it by cleaning house and getting ready for our Thirty-Third Anniversary the twenty-fifth of May and the SPJST Czech Convention in June. We cordially invite all of you to a Bingo Party at 4 p. m. sharp; a delicious Czech Supper at 6 p. m. and the Anniversary Program by the Stefanik Junior Club at 7 p. m. on Sunday, May 25th. This is an annual function at the Stefanik Lodge and honors all Stefanik Charter members. Too, this will be the last activity from which the proceeds go toward cur Convention Funds to entertain the delegates. So, please, accept our invitation and attend, we need your support. Our last monthly meeting of Sunday May 4th was very interesting and well attended. We were, indeed, more than happy to see Bro. Joe Kovar in his place at the meeting. He has been absent for six months due to an unfortunate accident to his leg. Reports were given on the Needville District meeting of April 27th by Sisters Blazena Becan, Anna Vaja and our Lodge President Bro. Alois Vaja. They were very favorable. Six of our junior girls represented Stefanik Lodge by dancing a "Hoop Dance" which was instructed by Sister Ann Ward who accompanied them to the district meeting with quite a number of other Stefanik members. The dancers were: Barbara Jean Ungrad Louise Becan, Jo Ann Alesi, Julia Figura, Ranelle and Kay Sturm. They wore beautiful pastel colored
off-the-shoulder evening gowns and white ballerina slippers. Each danced with a hoop, (the diameter of a bushel basket) covered with bright pastel colored crepe paper. From several reports the girls danced very well. Naturally we are very proud of them and Stefanik Lodge sincerely thanks the girls and their mothers for their wonderful cooperation. The other day I recieved a telephone call from President Leo Anders of the Fraternal Congress Organization and he informed me that there will be a program at Sons of Herman during Fraternal Brotherhood Week which falls from the 7th of June to the 14th of June. He requested, both Stefanik and Pokrok No. 88, Lodges to be represented by a specialty number. I will give you the details of this function next week, as it will be after the Business Meeting of the group which is on May 12th. On behalf of Stefanik Lodge, I wish to extend to Bro. Rudy Sefcik, president of Lodge Pokrok No. 88, a speedy recovery from the illness which attacked him so suddenly. We are very sorry to learn of your illness, Bro. Sefcik, and wish for you the best of luck in your convalescence. The Stefanik Willing Workers Toward Progress Club is still doing splendidly. New officers were elected the later part of March. The juniors decided to elect new officers every six months so they would all have an opportunity to serve as officers of the Club. The new officers for the next six months are as follows: President — Barbara Jean Ungrad; Vice President — Charles Dodd; Secretary — Jo Ann Alesi; Treasurer — Pete Bienek. Entertaining Committee — Faye Brezina; Ronelle Sturm, Julia Figura. Investigating Committee — Louise Becan, Kay Sturm and Joe Grabarkurtz. Bailiff Johnnie Grabarkurtz. The juniors are becoming veterans in handling the procedures in their own meetings. It is a pleasure to be on the sideline and listen to their discussions. They are busy with the anniversary program with Sister Ann Ward and yours truly as assistants. Charles Dodd the vice president of the club and Senior at Sam Houston High School will give the Introductory Speech of the program. There will be a Gymnastic Exercise Specialty by the entire club. A dance number to the music of "Ten Pretty Girls". A piano duet by Barbara Ungrad and Kay Sturm. "The Parasol Song" by Jo Ann Alesi, Julia Figura and Barbara Ungrad. A "tap Dance" by Louise Becan. This is just a part of the program the junior club is preparing. So don't 'disappoint

CLOTHESLINE ANGEL (By Clara M. Kahle) When we were moving from our home in Ohio' to Houston, Texas, after my husband's retirement, we had some thing which we no longer needed, and;' learning that a middle-aged Couple living on the outskirts of town needed furniture, we sent word to them to come and take what they needed from our surplus. In due time the man and his wife and a male helper arrived in an ancient sedan with a trailer hitched on behind. I asked the woman to sit down and tell me about herself while the men loaded the furniture on the truck. She was a shdrt, chubby, dum pling of 'a woman, with straight bobbed hair, a 'jolly mouth turned up at the corners and face as round and rosy as St. Nick's very own: a perfect find for a cartoonist. She told me how she and her husband, a partial invalid, had built their fourroom cabin with their own hands and lined it with tar paper. She was very proud of it: it was a nice little house, but—if she just had one more room!" "Why the extra room?" .I inquired."Because then I could take one more old lady," , she replied. Noting my surprise, she went on to explain: "You see,:. it started back a few years ago when I heard that an old lady in my neighborhood was going to be homeless. Her folks were moving away and leaving her behind because they couldn't support her any longer. They were just distant relatives. Well, I couldn't let her go to the poor house, could I? So I took her home to live with me. You know, I love old people, especial= ly old ladies; I love to do things for them and see them happy." "Did she have a pension?" I asked. "Well, yes," she admitted, "but it was such a small one and I couldn't take any of it because I knew that if she got sick and had to go to the hospital she would need it, and I knew, too, that it would be needed some time for she was pretty old." And so it was: for my chubby friend's last loving ministry when the end came. She missed her charge so much that when she heard of another aged woman in similar circumstances, she adopted her into her home, and, in the course of time, still another. Her friends tried to persuade her then that she had done enough; she must not take on further responsibility. But she insisted that she take just one more. She had heard of another one who would soon be alone and homeless, and she must take her, After that, perhaps, she would quit, but if she
just had 1 more room, she could take two at the same time! Bhe , would like that! They would be company for each other. "But how do you ever manage to feed them, with your husband working only one or two days a week?" I asked. A wonderful smile Spread over her face as she answered proudly, "Oh, I manage just fine. I have the grandest backyard for drying clothes that you ever saw: such a big, sunny place with lots of room for clotheslines." She had done fifteen washing that week, she boasted happily, and with nice weather she might do even more the next week. "So you see," she continued, "I earn enough to buy all the food we need. They have plenty to eat and they always seem so happy and contented. I love having them around." I think, perhaps, they filled the place in her heart for the babies which she never had. Each, in turn, had been someone to love and fuss over. My wonder grew as I listened to that amazing story of self-sacrifice and I felt humble in her presence. She no longer looked funny to me: she looked rather beautiful, and I thought of something that Christ said one day to His disciples: "The Kingdom of God is within you." She had so much of it within her that it overflowed into that fourroom cabin. And for those homeless one's, who had found refuge there, she has made a little.',heaven;, on earth within those tar-papered walls. "They a lw ays seem so happy and contented." I remembered some other words, too, about giving one's body for a living sacrifice. She had done just that. Fifteen washings a week! To feed the strangers who had only a little less than she had. I still feel humble when I think of that big-hearted angel with a jolly face like St. Nick's. She had so little but gave so much. —Christian Herald ) • 46 • ( BROTHERS and SISTERS, we want you to have your Vestnik. HOW IS YOUR LINEN CLOSE" If you want to give your mother-inlaw the shock of her life, just tell her you don't have a bed sheet to your name. While she reels, you can explain. "No linens at all. No pillow slips, no tablecloths, no napkins, no towels. You see, there's a man downtown who lets us use his." But don't expect that to put her back on an even keel. To her, the well-stocked linen closet is a hallmark of respectability. No marriage — not even yours — can be quite proper without it. That tradition is being challenged these days by a new kind of businessman: the home linen supplier. He's really a laundryman, but with a difference. The difference is that he owns the goods, not you. "You needn't buy a single piece," he tells his customers. "Just rent mine." If you are one of his customers, his deliveryman drives up once a week and leaves a package of freshly lanndered linens, everything from sheets to bath mats, in just the quantity you need. Next week he'll be back to pick up the used pieces and leave another package of clean ones in their place. This isn't a newly hatched idea. It's the home-styled model of service that business places, have enjoyed for years. Supplying linens on a rental basis to hotels, restaurants, institutions and other large-scale users is a 275-milliondollar industry. The logical extension of the service to private homes, however, has been slow a-coming. That isn't the line suppliers' fault. They have tried often enough, starting as far back as the 1920's. When competition among wholesalers got keener in the 1930's, there , were still more attempts to crash the home market. Some outfits tried to lure housekeepers by rent ing shirts as well as linens. One veteran firm in New York now boasts 20 years in the business. But by and large, it just didn't pan out. Not until World War II, that is. Then linens got scarce. Families of servicemen and war workers needed temporary supplies. And laundrymen were worried. They had seen the family laundry business -slim down as home washing machines improved. The time was ripe to give home linen rental another fling. This time the idea caught on. Today about 50 companies across the country are in the home linen-rental business. Their annual sales got up to an estimated 5 million dollars. That is still only a drop in the laundry bucket, but a bigger splaSh is coming.
Despite its 30-year history, the business is still in its infancy. Like all infants, it puts a lot of energy into trying to discover how it fits into the world. Some home linen renters operate cashand-carry stores, where customers bring their soiled linens and pick up glean ones. Others specialize in home delivery. Sonie will wash your shirts, too. Like all business pioneers, the home linen suppliers are having their headaches getting people to accept a novel way to meet an old need. You can, stop ten people on the street and nine of them have never heard of it. Even those who have heard of it tend to be skeptica,l. It sounds like a luxury. Actually, prices are pretty low, often approximating what you would pay to have your own linens done by a laundry. But the biggest bugaboo of all is the housewife's reluctance to use any linens but her own. She balks at sleeping this week on sheets some stranger used the week before. Of course, everyone does just that everytime he spends a night in a hotel. Bq when it comes to doing it at home— well, that's different. This may be 'a prejudices that doesn't make sense, but it's a real problem to the linen rental people just the same. th, • ( THE FAITHFUL 'EYE
Waiting for the traffic light to change, I drew up beside a tall man whose hand firmly gripped the shoulder harness of a Seeing Eye dog — a majestic German shepherd. They waited patiently, the man apparently calmly confident of his safety, the dog obviously alert without being tense, rather proudly, I thought, accepting his responsibility for the man who depended upon him. With the bell, and the forward movement of traffic, the man waited for the familiar action. Without lodking up, without pause or indicision, the dog pressed his flank against the man's leg and pulled ahead. Not until then did the man move. He stepped forward with confidence, following the dog's lead. I was startled when I looked up and saw the clear, open eyes of the man gazing at the dog with obvious pride. I must have stared; my amazement because the man turned toward me and smiled. "No, I'm not an imposter," he said as we walked with the crowd. "I work with the trainer of these fellows. I'm taking Van to a vet. You see, the dog is the one who is blind,"
