Mnoha matka se Casto pfizna, a beze slibu nedeho jeji deti neposlechnou; ale tadna, si nedovede uvedonliti, tuto skuteenost zaviriuje vlastne sama svkm jednanim. Vychovati dite rozumne zdaleka neznamena, povoliti mu v ge co jen si pfeje a na4 si vzpomene; ale dite vychovane v ricte ku svkm rodierim, snadno se nauei poslouchati bez slibu toho neb onoho, a dostane-li se mu odmeny za dobre a spravne jednani pouze la,skavkm slavem, pohlazenim, obeas snad i nejakkm mlskern, stane se nejgt'a.striejAim tvoreln pod sluncem a do sveho nejpozdnejglho veku nezapomene na svoji dobrou, laskavou mamu. V pravern opaku k tomu nedodrtienkm slibem vychovava se vzdor, kterk bez odmeny, stale stupriovane, nideho nevykona, a dite takove stale musi bkti podplaceno. Neni snad v celem svete matky, jet by svkch deti nemilovala; ale prive v to lasce musi bkti mnoho rozumu a sebekazne. Co platno slibovat hory a doly, bez dobre vale k vkchove matka nenauei svkch dal poslugnost1. MUSINGS OF THE EDITOR "PUT IT IN BOXCAR LETTERS across the whole page", Brother OttO Stehlik, of Wichita Falls, instructed your editor as to what kind of report should be placed in the Vestnik about the success of the 16th SPJST convention. "We have done some wonderful things", kept on repeating Brothe• Stehlik, "and don't fail to tell the members what we did." IT WAS A WONDERFUL convention that had been held in. Houston last week. It was the most orderly convention that your editor had ever participated in, and he. had been present in every one since 1920. And it was the most fruitful one, indicating that the future work of our organization has been well planned out. • • FOR ONE THING, the convention had decided to Move the headquarters to Temple. For thiS plan to be carried out a seven-member planning committee had been selected. This committee is to study, as soon as possible, several plans to erect office building at some desirable site in the city of Temple. WHEN THE QUESTION of owning a permanent home was presented to the 215 delegates on Tuesday afternoon, June 24, it was aproved and accepted unanimously. And when the actual location of the permanent . home was raised, six cities competed for the honor: Austin, Bryan, Fayetteville, Houston, Rosenberg, and Temple. Austin, Bryan, Houston, and Rosenberg were eliminated in the first ballot, causing a run-off between Fayetteville. When the final ballot was counted, it ,showed 9,568 votes for moving the headquarters to Temple, and 8, 298 for leaving it at Fayetteville. ♦ • 'ANOTHER FAR-REACHING decision was made when the organizational work was sub'divided into seven districts, each of them having its own director, an alternate, a member for the new headquarters building committee, and its own officers for carrying out the social work in the district. Later on, a district solicitor will be appointed by the Supreme Lodge to take care of the field work. • • STILL ANOTHER CHANGE had been made by adding two more directors to the official family. Up to now, we have

had six officers and five directors. By creating seven organizational districts, one director in each district was elected by the delegates of the respective district, thus placing seven directors in the official family. They are as follows: District One--Brother John A. Kubena, of Lodge 1; District Two—Brother Chas. Na.vratil, of Lodge 24; District Three --Brother Robert Cervenka, of Lodge 54; District Four—Frank J. Cerveny, of Lodge 85; District Five--J. M. Skrabanek, of Lodge 139, District Six—Frank Rod, of Lodge 50; District Seven—Chas Holasek, of Lodge 56. These seven directors will take care of all the financial affairs within their respective districts. • • FOR THE PLANNING and building of a new headquarters office in Temple, seven men, one from each district, were elected. The convention voted the sum of $250,000 to be used for the building, with not more than 20 percent to be added, if necessary. This special building committee is composed of: Brother J. H. Syptak, of Caldwell; Brother Frank Matush, of Temple; Brother Hugo Schefcak, of 'Dallas; Brother Otto Stehlik, of Wichita Falls; Brother Frank J. Olexa, of Houston; Brother Paul Sablatura, of El Campo; and Brother W. H. Marcak, of Kenedy. • ANOTHER INNOVATION was the adoption of a proposal to secure a state organizer. This is tied together with the adoption Of the Fraternal Sales Training program as prepared by the Fraternal Field Managers' AsSociation. The Training Program consists kof the Basic Course and the Advance Course. The lessons of there courses are to be studied by the local solicitors and send to the headquarters where they are' to be graded and someone from the headquarters acts as counsellor and instructor. In addition, it is planned — and it was approved by the convention organizational committee and sanctioned by the convention—to hold meetings for the local solicitors in each of the seven districts once in three months. It looks like your editor will be in the thick of it, fof it had been decided for the editor to aid the officers in holding these district meetings.

STILL ANOTHER BIG NEWS is in store for us, the one which Brother Otto Stehlik wanted to have printed in boxcar letters. However, we do not announce this until there is additional confirmation that' the proposition of the 16th convention had been accepted by one of the leading universities in the state. There is always plenty time for a good news. •

FIVE OF THE SIX OFFICERS were reelected. President Marek, vice-president Svadlenak, and treasurer Koliha were re-elected without opposition and unanimously. Secretary Chupik and financial secretary Urbanovsky were reelected by majority votes. Brother Adolph Pavlicek replaces Brother August Kacir as counsellor. Your editor was elected without opposition. It was not re-election, because your editor had only verbal agreement to serve till the convention. The convention elected him first for the' unexpired term till December, and later for the next term of four years. Also elected without opposition was Dr. Marvin Lesikar, of Temple, as chief medical advisor. • ♦ YOUR OFFICIAL PAPER, -the Vestnik, will continue to be published every week. The same Publication Committee, consisting of Brother Hornak, Sister Horak, and Sister Olexa, will look after the proper conduct of your editor. One slight change will go into effect beginning January 1, 1953: the paper will have more English reading matter. •1 )• President Thomas Jefferson wrote the epitaph for his own tombstone: "Here was buried Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of American Independence, of the Statute of Virginia for Religious Freedom, and Father of the University of Virginia." I • " •( Three successive Presidents occupied the White House within 30 days. They were: Presidents Van Buren, William Henry Harrison, and Tyler. ) • 4 • ( A golden spike, driven at Ogden, Utah in 1869, marked the completion of the first transcontinental railway.

AM MY BROTHER'S KEEPER" (Editor's Note: --- At the banquet Thursday night, June 26, at Rice Hotel, for the enjoyment of the delegates and guests of the 16th SPJST convention, Mr. Rex James, secretary-treasurer of the Texas Fraternal Congress, was the main speaker.) Whenever I attend or talk at a banquet I am reminded of an incident that happened in Detroit, Michigan, in the mid twenties; I had been invited to talk at a banquet given in honor of a newly elected Mayor of the city and it being the first time I had been chosen to ap, pear., before a really important gathering, I was scared stiff, my knees were knocking and my stomach was head, quarters for all the butterflies in Michigan. Well, seated next to me was the .prinCipal speaker of the evening, Mr. Chauncey Depew, the well known and talented orator and writer and an old hand, at the business of after-dinner speaking. So. I turned to Mr. Depew and asked his advice on how to put over ,a talk; how to be a successful afterdinner speaker. Mr. Depew said to me, "Son, don't let stage fright get you down, there is really nothing to this business and you can be a success if you will just remember that it is a matter of simple psychology. The substance of the average talk is about ten or fifteen percent interesting topic and the balance is pure hogwash to use up the allotted time. Now, most audiences know that and they listen for a little while and then go to sleep; so, to be successful, just start right in and give them that ten ,or fifteen percent of your talk that is interesting and let them get on with their nap; then you don't have to worry about the main portion of your talk because nobody will hear it." Whatever success I have had these past twenty five years I owe to that good advice and I am seternally gratefull to Mr. Depew. And now, I want to extend to your fine organization the sincere greetings from the Texas Fraternal Congress of which you are a valued and respected 'active member. I want to thank you for Y9tiF splendid cooperation in all Congres8 affairs. I want to tell you that your contribution in time and talent was a determining; factor in the success of the fifty first session of the Congress in Corpus Christi. last fall. It has been my privilege and pleasure to attend several gatherings of Slavonic people and on each such occasion I was impressed as I have been here tonight With the natural friendliness and down-

Banquet Address by Rex James to-earth philosophy of life that seems to characterize you people everywhere. It is little wonder that your society has prospered and grown from 22 lodges with about 600 members to 164 lodges with over 25 thousand members, qou have, by your contagious friendliness and wholehearted unselfishness, established yourselves as outstanding fraternalists and good neighbors in every community you inhabit.,Your progress and community standing here in Texas is simply the reward for the continuous traditional worthwhileness of your people which dates back to the sixth century when history first began to record the existence of the Slavic nations. From that time on there is ample evidence of your deeply ingrained loyalty, good citizenship and fraternalistic activity. Despite the many hardships endured and the countless economic, social and political upheavals that has been the lot of Slavonic people since their advent into central Europe, they have not only survived but have maintained an exceptionally high standard of culture, and while traditionally agricultural and industrial, they have produced some of the Western division of the Slavic nations is acknowledged to be one of the most classic in existence and is probably the most expressive of all known tongues. The Slavonic people have been staunch religious adherents for mans generations and while they have adopted several advanced phases of Christianity and have developed into modern symbolic sturdiness, they have clung to many of their old religious traditions and to this day, observe of the ancient rites and superstitions which color and beauty to their modern system of worship. And speaking of beauty and religion it brings to mind the outstanding architecture of The Tyn and Thorelsky churches in Prague in which has been combined the best characteristics of the Greek and Roman Architecture with the typically Slavic influence to produce designs unexcelled anywhere in the world for sheer beauty. I have the advantage over some of you, knowing all of this from my personal observation when I visited Czechoslovakia. Your people have not been without world famous statesmen and political experts, the most widely known in modern times being the Moravian blacksmith, Thomas Masaryk and his devoted follower, Eduard Benes; and while both Of these gentlemen unquestionably made

quite a few enemies in their home land, they were instrumental in establishing a free government for Czechoslovakia which, if world powers had been less selfish and had stood by their conimitments, would have been a monument to liberty-loving people the world over and would have gone far toward bringing free government to all regimented peoples. The rape of Czechoslovakia is a blot on the pages of history that will never be removed or forgotten. You, the members of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of Texas, are representative of a truly great and highly respected people and you have brought to this land of ours the best traditions of your friendly, charitable and libertyloving forefathers; you have brought a way of life that is rich in benevolence and fraternalism; you have added materially to the spirit of Democracy for which this nation stands; you have wholeheartedly accepted your resposibilities as good citizens and good neighbors, which brings me to the theme of my talk for tonight, "I am' my Brothers' keeper." When I was invited to come here tonight, I chose this subject because it seemed to me that you people more than any other in the country would be in almost unanimous accord with the. Principles involved. You have proven your willingness to accept the responsibility for the welfare of your fellow man; you have demonstrated your love of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. If this were not so, you would not be active members of this society which teaches the fatherhood of God and the brotherhocd of man, loyalty to good government and mutual aid, the fundamental principles of Fraternalism. Therefore yoUr attendance here tonight is proof, if proof were needed, that you do accept these responsibilities; that you realize that it is your job to aid and assist, educate and develop your fellow man; that you admit that his welfare and his future is, in a very strong sense, your welfare and your future; that no man, no organization, no nation can stand alone. We know very little by original discovery, we are almost wholy dependent upon cur neighbors, friend, forefathers and educational organizations for every scrap of knowledge we possess. Culture, religion, morals, yes, even tastes and habits are transmitted from one to another, generation to generation. Our lives are molded and our mentalities

Do we want to see women and f'hildreb driven from their homes and !he flower of our youth slain on the I ielyd of battle? Of course not, and we an do something about . it, We, the Oocl-fearing peace loving people of the world, are not without -power to act and defeat the forces of evil and the enemies of decent progress. We have the 'numbers and the intelligence to successfully promote any worthwhile movement we choose to sponsor, but we will have to. concentrate our efforts and strengthen our determination; we will have to make this effort a personal one: We know that our societies, churches, schools and other organized agencies of training will unquestionably continue to provide mass education in the right channels and we must support these institutions and encourage them in their worthy efforts, but they have not, can not and will not be sufficient without the wholehearted assistance of the individual influence of each and every one of us. We know that several times in history when conditions reached an unbearable state that we were able to rise up and with our military might defeat the forces of evil and aggression, but we also know that it is always costly in life and resources. Experience has proven that war never has been and never will be the permanent answer to any world problem. What we want can only be obtained by the education of the individual, and here is where we can, and I hope will, spend our energies; we can, by . education, undestanding, tolerance and - fraternalism, bring about the removal of the causes of war and other equally destructive emergency measures; we can build a world in which there will be no room for dissentkms, no gateway through which crackpot isms can enter; bUt to do this we will have to increase cur individual responsibilities; we will have to takp our fraternalism with us wherever we go; practice it, preach it, fight for it and instill it in the minds of our neighbors; never close our eyes at night nor end a prayer without sayhr, to ourselves, each and every one of us, "I am my brother's keeper." )•

ERICANIZATION OF THE WHITE MAN Foss four , and a half. centuries U. S. gOvernineht Officials , have been trying to make Indians behave like Europeans. But changes wrought White „life by Indian teachers are far more impressive than any changes white teachers have yet brought to Indian life. Four-sevenths of -our national farm prbdeete is frOrn plants domesticated by Indian botanists. Corn, tobacco, white and sweet potatoes, beans, peanuts, tomatoes, pumpkins, chocolate, Atherican cotton, and rubber, give America more than half its agricultural income. Votes for' ' women, the pattern of states Within a state that we call federalism, the habit of treating chiefs as servants of the people were part of the American way of life before Columbus landed. American Indians today are still teaching America to solve the perplexing problems of land use, education, government, 'and human relations. The real epic of America is the yet unfinished story of the Americanization Of the white man. European colonists had to go to Indian guides to learn how to grew corn and tobaccos how to stalk or snare game. European colonists learned other lessons. The Europe that lay behind Columbus was in some respects less demotratie than, the lands that spread before him. Politically, there was nothing in . EurOpe in the 15th and 16th centuries to parallel the democratic constitution of the Iroquois confederacy. It provided, for initiative, referendum and recall, and suffrage for women as well as men. The vision of a Utopia came out of America. Writers dreamed of a country where all men would be free, where government would rest upon the consent of the, goverhed, where no man would be driven`froin the land he worked for a living. That vision came to the great, modern saint and' legal philosopher, Thomas Mores at the 'time when the first, reports came from the explorer, Amerigo Vespucci.Iiis vision Was also• of a democratic society in which a 40-hour work week left time to enjoy life, a society in, which even the humblest worker could afford to have windowi in his • home to let in the sunlight, When More's eyes beeame dim on. the tyrant's scaffold that Henry VIII erected for his chancellor, the gleam that he lit lived on for the generations to follow. Thomas More had seen something that no tyrant and no dictatorship could wipe out. The greatest teachers of American democracy have, trone to school with the

Indians. The first common councils of the American colonies,' the Council of Lancaster in 1744, and the famous Al•bany Congress of 1754, were called for the Purpose of treating with the 'Iroquois confederacy. The Indian leaders were Unwilling to treat separately with the various' quarreling coldssies. The great Iroquois Chief Canasatego gave advice to the colonial governors meeting at Lancaster in 1744. "Our wise forefathers , established union and amity between the Five Nations. This has made us formidable; this has given us great weight and authority with our neighboring nations. We are a powerful confederacy; and by your observing the same methods our wise forefathers have taken, you will acquire such strength and power. Therefore whatever befalls you, never fall out with one another." The theory of American democracy is based upon the premise that self-government is better than expert government. This idea was not strange to the Cherokee chiefs. They would again and again refuse to make decisions for their people until the deeision had been thoroughly threshed out in the councils. They acted only with approval by a majority of their followers. Their slowness often annoyed white administrators who wished swift decisions from Indian leaders, but their principle made Indian democracy strong. The product of Indian agriculture were resisted as bitterly in the Old World as were the Indian ideas of democracy, liberty, and tolerance. Despite the punishment of cut-off ears and noses, German peasants refused for centuries to eat potatoes. Down to recent decades, the tomato, or love apple, was regarded by most Europeans as poisonous. Gradually a few of the agricultural achievements of Indian . America have become accepted by the rest of the world. The 'process of give-and-take is not at an end. The rediscovery of an old Indian dish, toasted corn flakes, revolutionized the breakfast habits of the U. S. We have just increased America's corn crop by 40 per cent by rediscovering the Indian preference for hybrid corn. In medicine, as in the production of food and textiles, the Indian was not an ignorant savage. Until a feW years ago 'most of America's contributions to medical science were of Indian origin. Quinine, cocaine, cascara 'sagrada, ipecac, witch hazel, oil of wintergreen, and petroleum jelly were developed in America long before the first white physician landed here. In the 400 years that European physicians and botanists

have been examining and analyzing the flora of America, they have not yet dis--' covered a medicinal herb not known toi the Indians. These are material things that can be counted and measured. They show that the Indian did know how to make • use of his land and its resources; that the white conqueror did not teach him. But the material things have a human significance. For corn, as countleSS Ihdian generations have •known, is not simply a thing. It is a way of life. Corn, reproducing itself threehundredfold, without benefit ctlf horse or plow—where plowed fields f wheat or rye produce only twenty et, cc thirtyfold—is a sturdyfrientl (d freedom. The frontier's.man could tette sv.k of seed corn 'on his should::rs int Lee . wilderness in 'the spring, and after three months he might be reastsnably asetted against hunger for the rest Of his life. He was not bound to any man's soil. No such path to freedom, no such check upon the growth of tyranny, was ever open to growers.'of wheat Or rye Or rice. American pioneers were following an old Indian pattern when they went 'into the wilderness, chopped down trees; planted their corn among the ,Stumps, and claimed possesion by right of :use and occupancy. The whole economic history of rural America has been , a struggle between the feudal land . ternires of Europe, glorifying the absentee owner, and the Indian land tenure, where land right is the fruit of use and occupancy. The great American contribution . to the law of property is the homestead system, the grant of land rights based on use and occupancy, and the protection of the homestead against levy, exee cution, and taxes. It represents the triumph on our soil .of the Indian landholding pattern. Even the lowly Indian (Irish) potato revolutionized European history. First, it banished the fear of hungers from millions of European homes. For a -farm family that would starve on 'four acres of wheat or rye could thrive and multiply on an acre of potatoes. The introduction of the white potato resulted ;in an unprecedented rise in the standard of living of Europe and the British'Isles, and ultimately laid the basis for a great population growth and a vast expansion of commerce and industry. Don't Live By The Calendar Most people 'joke about their age, ye few of them really laugh it off. Jack Benny invariably answers "39" when asked how old he is. He may be clowning, but psychologically he has something there. Show people are not the only ones who are notorious for wanting to "forget their age." Even' -George Bernard Shaw, when askedtbcelebrate his eighty-eight birthday, answered: "To hell with all birthday wishes. I'm not celebrating." And' Fbnce de Leon, fed up with it all, blew out the fifty-three candles on his birthday cake and set cut in' search of the Fountain of Youth. Most Hof us become calendar-consciOus after $0. Life conditions us that way. For exann-ile, doctors are the worst offenders: Every day they ask at least '1,000,000 Amerins, "How old are you? When were you born?" Election registrars ask, "Are you 21?" Insurance agents say, "'when is your nearest birthday?' And certificates and death certificates cc4 iiplete the cycle of our lives. We are biit tiny specks on the calendar. VOr many years it has been my conviction that a birthday cake cluttered with candles is not a pretty sight. The nextAlny you attend a birthday celebration;Vittly the admixture of sadness and forced gaiety in the facial expreSsion of the honored guest — especially when you all sing "Happy Birthday To You.!" To stay young, to become a young-old person, here are some things to remember: You must have both a healthy body and a healthy outlook. Your actual age at a given moment often depends as much on you philosophy as on your arteries. Yet, do you act your age, or act as you feel? Too many of us live by the calendar and so grow old before our time. Gray hairs are not indisputable 'evidence of old age. Ordinarily the older we get the more emphasis we ptit up:in money, the more we think about money. And so it might be difficult for you to appreciate the fact that money is secondary. Maybe you, like so many others, think that all you need for peak happiness is a little more money. But it just isn't so! The moment you let your desire for money lure you Into a job you dislike or keep you in a job that bores you, money can hurt you. Marriage

Kiss-and-make-up is a fine rule in marriage. "A far better rule is to kiss;and think up," says Alex 6sborn in Wake UP' Your Mind (Scribners; 0.00). "Think up wayS of avOiding the clashes whOi would otherwise call for making up." That's where you call on your creative imagination. To see how it Works, consider these examples given by Mr. Osborn: One happily married wife fretted.over her husband's habit of putting his ashes into the saucer of his coffee mil). peoldings got nowhere. Finally, she attacked the problem creatively and thought up a solution. At each meal she placed not one, but three, ashtrays in front of ,her husband. William .Yeather. reported: "I have done all I could to reduce domestic bickering'. One contribution early in my parried life was the purchase and delivery of two copies of our morning newspaper. Under this plan the stay-at-horrie had her paper, and the gO-avW-to-buSlness had his." Bruce Earton early adopted the plan of having his" first-of-the-Month check sent to his wife, and his middle-of-themonth check sent to him. Thus he,'0urinated any possible controversy about money. Getting along with relatives can likewise tax imagination. A New England woman took her mother-in-law into, her home. The old lady's continued questioning got on her nerves, until she thbught up an antidote. "From now on," she an.. nounced to her in-law, "whenever you ask me about our priva.te affairs, I will either lie to you or give you- a, nonsensical answer. Which do you prefer?"
