VIT BUDLUME LEM NEMOCENSKi ODBOR OSTAVIL SE ptede mne jeden p delegat z minuleho sjezdu rejpnul mne palcem do Leber a pravil: Zapomneli jsme na sjezdu zvolit nokoho, kdo by fidil NemocenskY odbor." Pak mi meal vysvetlovati, 'te ye stanovach' stoji, 'te sjezd zvoli teditele pro yedeni Nemocenskeho odboru. Upozornil jsem zmineneho delegata, te praci s vedenim Nemocenskeho odboru provddi pokladnik Hlavni fitadovny, bratr Koliha. Snad bude spravne, kdyt si nektere body ohledne naieho Nemocenskeho odboru zopakirjeme. Je to vlastne tteba jestli ne mame .ztratiti to, co jsme jit vybudovali. Vzpominam si, jak pied mnoha lety, kdyt moje deli zadaly choditi do Skoly, ptivezl jsem • do/MI kanarka. Deli ho pojmenovaly "Sousa". Nastala rozepie, di kandrek bude. "Asi to toho, kdo ho bude krmit", usoudil jsem. Vla,stnictvi kanarka zev gednelo. Nekdy v jednom tYdnu mel kanarek tti majitele. Nekdy, kdyby kanarka, nenakrmila moje mantelka, majitel by o ptaka ',lige'. Zkratka kanarek by v rukou s yYch majitelfi pael hlady a tizni. Zda, se mi, to na.S' NemocenskY odbor ma stejny osud jako ten malt' opetencc.

Whody nageho Nemocenskeho odboru nam zevgednely. Proto minulY sjezd musel ptijati novY elinek 35-a: Kdykoliv ye kterekoliv tfide Nemocenskeho odboru kiesne poeet elenfi pod pet set, budit takova tfida truSena. Je vatna, obava, 'te budou zruSeny chny tfidy, ktere poskytuji vet gi obnosy podpory ate zfistane pouze jedna ttida, to nejlacinej'Ai a nejmene itYpomocna, tiida tech nejchudAich. A piece mame vec dobrou. Mame ji dosud, ale ptestaneme ji miti, zdali se nepostarame o jeji z yelebeni a rozgiteni. Maine dosud etyti stupnice podpor. elenove pod 50 let mohou bYti v tfide, ktera plats na lekatske vYdaje pies $150, dosti slanou nahradu a sice $ 144.00. Nikdo neplati cely roeni poplatek najednou. Vzdor tomu, to nemocenska podpora v obnosu $144 stoji pouze $12 roene, nebo $1 inesiene,.neni inezi natimi dvaceti tisici dospelyrni eleny pet set elenft, kteti

by melt zajem, aby ona nejlepai a nejvice vYpomocni ttida se udriela. Nemame v one ttide ani pet set Mena % a proto ttida bude zruS'ena. A to neni je gte vSechno. My nername ani takovYch pet set elenft, kteti by chteli bYti chraneni proti nemocenskemu vydani obnosem 75 centii mesiene. ZUstavaji nam jen ti, kdo dosud plati etvrt'ak, aby men ulevu, kdyt by byli nemocni. Lee kam dnes se etvrt'alem? Jest!! etvetakem chce si nekdo uleviti od vydarn, ktere nemoe ptinaM; to zajiste nepodita na vainou nernoc. Kanarek "Sousa" jednou vskutku doVe sklenene nadobce nebylo 'ant kapky vody. A ten na g Nernocenskk odbor, nedbalosti nasich elena, zaeiria tet chtadnout. Ut dnes mame nemocnY Ncmocensky odbor. Kde je vina? Prod to nejde? Zadna lidska myglenka nema sily sama v sobe, kdyt o ni lido neptemYSleji. Za katdYm planem musi stati lido, aby ho provadeli. To neznamena jen jednu osobu. Br. Koliha to sam nevytrhne. On musi miti u katdeho tadu jednoho ochotneho elena, jet by myglenku Nemocenskeho odboru stale podnecoval. U tadu Pokrok Houstonu byl to bratr Jaroslav Janieek. Jen& Janicek zemtel a s nim °dad zajem o NemocenskY odbor.

Cervence. Tarn mame najemne z aradovny $990.00 za 6 mesica. Roane to dela $1,980.00.. Hned zde je chyba o $180.00. Pak je tarn vydrZovani Hlavni firadovny $1,458.96, Roane to dela $2,917.92. Ja tuto sumu povaZuji jako najemne, protole po gtovne to neni, slutne yYpomoci to neni a psaci potfeby to take nejsou. Pak tarn mame tnena poukazek $135.55. Roane to dela, $271.10. Tato eastka nam naeisto odpadne v Temple a proto take tuto polozku jmenuji najemne Hlavni firadovny. All communications relating to editorial matters of the English Section should be addressed: Associate Editor, G4tr2 Fragile, Houston 7, Texas.

POSTMASTER: Send form 3579 with undeliverable copies to S. P. J. S. 'r., Fayetteville, Texas.

MUSINGS OF THE EDITOR FOREMOST IN THE MIND of your editor this week is the Fraternal Sales Training program which is now being offered to every local organizer, in fact. to every member wishing to take the course. The organizational work is ready to go into a high gear. • • VERY SHORTLY EACH SOLICITOR will receive a letter of explanation from Brother Marek, our president. But to give a chance to those who may also be interested in .this course, your editor was requested to make a mention of it in the Vestnik. Should there be any member who would desire to take this course, he can get in, but he must get an approval from his local lodge. The recommendation of the home members can be obtained in any monthly meeting. That's the procedure according -to the By-laws. •

THE COURSE WILL NOT be offered free, but it will be very reasonable. The convention did not appropriate any extra funds to carry out the program out-lined, so the whole plan must be selfsustaining. The price of the course is $19, which- includes a textbook, cost of mailing different reports, and occasional instruction in a group by someone from the headquarters. The textbook will remain to be the property of the solicitor. All the test papers and questionnaires will likewise be returned to the solicitor. • • IT WILL NOT BE COMPULSORY that the local organized takes this course. It is optional, but it will be recommended- for every organizer to do so. The course will help everybody to become a better solicitor. In addition, the district organizers will be selected from those who will complete the "basic" course, the first part of the entire course. • • SHOULD YOU BE INTERESTED in additional information, write to Brother Marek after you receive his announcement. The plan is to have some 25-35 organizers enrolled in each district, so that a class could be held in the district at least once a month or once every six weeks. This class instruction will

supplement the home study of each solicitor. • • IF THIS BRIEF EXPLANATION is not rod enough, your editor will come back with some more next week. Remember the sign found in the Western dance hall: "Don't shoot the pianist — he's doing his best." Next week, there will be a definite program announced, because another meeting is to be held by the Supreme Lodge to iron cut a few remaining wrinkles. •

editor's favor. He would look behind and dish out the same food in the following issue. To look behind may not be so fatal for the editor as it was for Lot's wife, but there is danger of becoming •ossilized. It would be detrimental. YET, WITH COOPERATION, it could be done to a certain extend where the staleness of the editor's thinking would not be so glaring. Should any of the members find an article in one section which he considers good • enough to be repeated in the other language, drop your editor a hint, or ask him openly to translate it. Your editor does not know what article merits your approval. • •

THE FRATERNAL SALES TRAINING program will have a far-reaching significance. The dictate of the convention is that the Supreme Lodge must employ a State organiZer. Also the Supreme' THE EDITOR frequently goes through Lodge, on the recommendation of the state organizer,' must appoint a district three stages of his choice of subjects.- At solicitor for each district. All of that first, he is full of ideas. He sees good is easy—on paper. It will be up to the articles ahead of him and all about him, Supreme Lodge to find such men. The Next he "runs dry." He has to do some only way—unless we spend oodles of digging, in books, in newspapers, in conmoney and go to hire an outsider—is to tact with members. And the secret of train them. SEVEN STEPS TO BE A GOOD HUSBAND You may have the best intentions in the world, but you'll never be the man your wife thought she married until you understand a few simple things about-her. And most ,ef a wife's grievances would evaporate if her husband would treat her with the same courtesy he gives elevator operators, waiters or even passing pedestrians. Your wife wants to be something more than a home appliance. Merely because she can distinguish between a Democrat and a Republican is no sign that she wants "equal rights" with you. You can't become a model husband by :haring the housework, taking turns at washing dishes or diapers, or by doing your bit of cooking or mending. The Dist thing in the world any woman wants is to increase the emphasis on housework. That's just what happens when you get embroiled in it too. Women have a distinct and understandable yearning for a life beyond housework routine. A wife's demands are not outrageous. Here are a few things she would like. 1. Companionship. This does not mean the' physical presence of a man around the house when the spirit is noticeably absent. It is not fulfilled by a man behind a newspaper in the living room while the wife does dishes in the kitchen. It means a man who respects her enough to communicate with her. This doesn't mean he must keep up a constant stream of chatter like the characters. But yOur wife would like to shake off the depressing fear that you may never speak to her again. At the very least, she wants you to "make conversation" with her to let her on what you are thinking about. 2. Sharing responsibilities. She probably doesn't expect you to roll up your sleeves and start peeling potatoes the minute you come home from work. But it would help if you would take over the children for this part of the day. She can't help looking on the children as yours as well as hers. She enjoys them, and since they are yours as well as hers, she wants you to show interest in them too. If you take responsibility for them, think and talk about them, watch their growth, and do things with them, you'll have as much fun with them as your wife, and incidentally deepen your whole family relationship. 3. Partnesrship. Men sometimes seem to think that it takes two to get married, but only one to keeP a marriage going. You should take at least half the resposibility for building a congenial social life, finding and keeping alive mutual

interests, and making your in-laws welcome. One of the greatest myths c.; our civilization is the notion that the wife must be beautiful from sunup to sundown, while her husband can slop around the house in any old getup he pleases. 4. Time off. One of the least understood problems; of a married woman's life is that she rarely has a moment to herself. Even if you punch a time clock, you have at least a lunch hour you can call your own. You probably have Saturday and Sunday free from work. Your wife's peculiar role in the family makes her job continuous. She can hardly ever escape, no matter how well she has the houSe and children organized. Even when she's looking for a new dress, she's probably also trying to find a birthday present. If she manages to get to the dentist, she probably must rush right back so that her sister, who is staying with the baby. won't be late for picking up her children, who may be staying with a neighbor. Your wife needs some relief. Once in a while she should be able to get away, with no strings attached. And she should not have to worry about what is happening at home while she is gone. This means you must be willing to take charge while she is away or pay someone else to do it. For this, your wife will gladly give up Mother's day candy forever. 5. Life made simpler. The one besetting fault of the American woman is her tendency to drive herself toward impossible perfection in housekeeping. You should not egg your wife on. There are probably 50 million women in America today who are waiting for the clay when in answer to her "I think I'll make a lemon meringue pie today," some husband will say, "Oh, let's have something simple." 6. Occasional surprises. One of the best things about romance is the constant discovery of new things. Because dishes and diapers Wait for no man, it's up to you, the husband, to inject a little surprise now and then. A kiss at high noon, if it doesn't scare your wife to death, will please her. A flower for no reason at all is worth a carload of Easter lillies. Au out-of-the-blue suggestion for a date, with the children already taken care of, will make your wife remember that life can be beautiful. 7. A share in money matters. It's a standing American joke (among men only) that wives are birdbrained in money matters and never spend a cent where two cents would do. Yet there are plenty of statements by economists to

prove that women control the major wealth of the country through their role of family purchasing agent. The woman who has skimped, stretched, substituted, and saved to make $50 a week do the work of $75 does not enjoy having her husband twit her about throwing money away, even in jest. The most irritating thing you can do is to say in a horrified tone, "Where did that money I gave you last Friday go?" Your wife should never have to beg you for money, any more than you should have to beg her for a meal. If her demands are out of line, chances are you've never told her exactly how much you make. It's probably true that wives are impressed with the progressive symbols that seem to mean a family moving forward. The house instead of the apartment, the wall-to-wall carpeting, the fur coat, the bigger car may make your wife feel you're getting ahead. Too many American families make a fetish of "things," and consider the showering of them on people as a substitute for love. If yOutr family thinks this way it may be your fault. Perhaps you have put all your interest and energy toward success in busines, with seldom a thought for your wife and children beyond occasional gift tokens. Small wonder, then, if your wife eonsiders the most important thing in Iife to be keeping up with the Joneses. Are you surprised, then, if she puts great stock in your routine gifts at stated occasions? If you're that sort of a husband, it would be well for you to decide that chasing, rainbows is not life in it self. Then you will be able to rejoin thO family as something more than a star boarder. You will be more like the lollsband your wife thought she married. ). • 4,

MINUTES OF THE THIRD REGULAR, 1952, MEETING OF THE SUPREME LODGE, SPJST, HELD AT THE SUPREME LODGE OFFICE AT FAYETTEVILLE, TEXAS, ON JULY 14, 1952 The meeting was called to order by President Marek at 9:25 a. m. All memberrs of the Supreme Lodge, except Brother Kubala, were present, as follows: Edward L. Marek Frank G. Svadlenak J. F. Chupick R. A. Urbanovsky Jos. Koliha, Jr. J. C. Eineigl Frank Rod Chas. Navratil J. M. Skrabanek August Kacir Brother Valcik, editor ,cf the Vestnik, and Brother Frank Matush, chairman of the building committee, appointed at the last convention, were also present at the meeting. Since Director Kubala could not be present at the meeting on account of his serious illness, it was agreed that the Secretary should write him a getwell letter—wishing him a speedy recovery from his illness. Secretary Chupick read .the minutes of the regular meeting of the Supreme Lodge held en April 14, 1952. After a slight correction of these minutes, by the deletion of two lines in the fourth paragraph on page 185, these minutes were adopted. Secretary Chupick read the minutes of the special meeting of the Supreme Lodge held on June 9th, 1952. After a slight correction of these minutes by the addition of the following explanatory remark "the installation pf such pipeline to .be made at the expense of the tenant at his own risk and without any liability or responsibility on the part of the Supreme Lodge" to the end of the last. paragraph under caption "REO No. 67—Hutyra Farm" on page 190, these minutes were adopted. Secretary Chupick asked the Supreme Lodge for a directive as to how strictly we should adhere to our By-laws when dealing with excessive loans of some of our old members. He stated that while we have . enly a few . excessive certificate

loans that most of these loans are loans of old members who are financially unable to reduce them within the loan value of their certificates. Secretary Chupick added that he has used every effort or means at his command in an endeavor to get these excessive certificate loans reduced to the proper level, and that while successful in many instances the few remaining excessive certificate loans on our books are those which he has been unable to reduce to within the loan values of the certificates securing them. It was unanimously agreed that Seeretarry Chupick should write all these members who have excessive certificate loans, and, ads°, to the secretaries of their respective lodges calling their attention to the extreme urgency that these excessive certificate loans be reduced to within the proper level and advising them that if these certificate leans are not so reduced that the Supreme Lodge will be compelled or cbligated to comply strictly with the Bylaws and terminate the certificate' securing such excessive loans. Brother Frank Matush, of Temple, Texas, chairman of the building committee, appointed at the last convention, who was present , at the Supreme Lodge meeting made his report of his preliminary investigation of the various sites offered for the proposed Supreme Lodge office building in Temple, Texas. He discussed three or four different sites that he has under consideration for our Supreme Lodge office building in Temple, Texas, and answered various questions propounded to him by the various members of the Supreme. Lodge. He explained to the Supreme Lodge that he does not contemplate and would not favor or recommend starting actual c - onstruction of the proposed office building for the Supreme Lodge, immediately, but that he wants to have all the plans and everything in readiness when the time come to proceed. Brother Matush invited the Supreme Lodge to hold its October, 1952, meeting in Temple, Texas. President Marek reported that since January 1, 1953, to the date of the meeting, the Supreme Lodge issued 543 new certificates. That this month (July, 1952) shows an increase in activity since we have received 90 applications for membership since the 1st of the Month. He reported that during the last quar ter he made trips to contact the following organizers: Kveton, Lodge No. 157; Snapka, Lodge No. 45; Barina, Lodge No 38 Hejny, Lodge No. 135; Haskovee, Lodge No. 25; Strunce, Lodge No. 82;

Straus, 21

Rektorik, Lodge No. 117; Novak, Lodge No. 107; and that he attended the district meetings at Hillje, Holland and West. President Marek suggested that for the sake of uniformity we should pay all our medical examiners the same medical examination fee. He stated that in some instances we pay $3.00 for medical examinations and in other instances $5.00, etc. Upon motion by Director Eineigl, seconded by Director Skrabanek, and unanimously carried, it was agreed to pay all our medical examiners $5.00 for our medical examinations. It was unanimously agreed that we should request all of our local organizers not to use medical examinations except in such cases that non-medical examinations cannot be used. Vice-president Svadlenak stated that he had no report to make in addition to the written report which he submitted to the members of the Supreme Lodge at the meeting. The meeting was adjourned for 'dinner at 12:00 noon and reconvened at 1:30 p. m. Upon motion by Secretary Chupick, seconded by Vice-Pres. Svadlena.k, and unanimously carried, it was agre gd that the Supreme ,Lodge office should order, for use at the next convention, 400 copies of the Vestnik containing the minutes of the XVI convention and that the publishers of the Vestnik should be advised, at once, by telephone to print said 400 extra copies of the Vestnik, and forward same to the Supreme Lodge office. Messrs. Whitehill and Carlisle, representing the Addressograph Corporation, came before the Supreme Lodge in an endeavor to sell to the Supreme Lodge a new type addressograph, the use and operation of which these gentlemen have previously discussed on numerous occasions, with Financial Secretary Urbanovsky. Upon motion by Vice-pres. Svadlenak, seconded by Secretary Chupick, and unanimously carried, it was agreed that we should defer the purchase of any additional equipment until after Janne ey 1, 1953. Secretary Chupick reported that our 1952 license or permit to do business was issued to the Supreme Lodge by the Insurance Department, on condition that all indebtedness owing to the Supreme Lodge by any of the members of the Supreme Lodge would be removed from our files and on condition that we reduce our holdings of the Tex-O-Kan

Stinna Ph-lei-rod Stock to within our legal limits, Sec. Chupick reported that as far as his indebtedness to the Supreme Lodge was concerned that he has already taken it up. WHERE'S YOUR BI RTH CERTIFICATE? •

Condensed from The Rotarian Tom Mahoney A young businessman had been selected to investigate an opportunity open to his firm in Europe. But when he applied for a passport, he was told he would need a birth certificate. Joe wasn't sure he had a birth certificate. He and his wife searched family files in vain. Then he telephoned to authorities in the town where he was born, only to be told that his birth had not been recorded. The town clerk said he would issue' a belated certificate if Joe could provide acceptable affidavits regarding his birth. ThiS would take time, however; Joe's firm could not wait. So another man was sent on the European mission. Two men aplied for an important job in a jet-plane factory: Bill was the better qualified of the two. "We must have proof of ,citizenship," said the employment manager. "Have you a birth certificate?" Bill had none, the other man did and got the job. Anna looked forward to her 65th birthday, when she would get $40 a month under Social Security on the basis of her older husband's $80-a-month , pension. en she applied for her allotment, officials asked her to supply a birth certificate or equivalent evidence of her age. She is still trying to do so— and her pension is uncollected. Cases like these are sending thousands of 'Americans scrambling for birth certificates. It is nice to have your available; you never know when you'll need it. Numerous inheritances have been decided on the basis of birth certificates, and sometimes one is, necessary to settle a life-insurance claim. The late Al Jolson's $4,000,000 policy is now in court because he didn't have a birth certificate. Arguing that he. was older when the insurance was issued than they had been led to believe, insurance officials contend that the payment , should be cut to $278,000 to compensate for the premium differences. In many cities where sch)ools are crowded, pupils entering for the first time are required to bring birth certificates.Priority is given to older children. Youthful-appearing persons may have to produce proof of age to obtain working papers, an automobile license or a marriage license, or to be allowed to vote. Men are called to military service now strictly according to birth dates. A birth certificates is the best and most convenient proof of both age and citizenship. It is a simple, official form

issued to those entitled to it at a cost of no more than $1 — sometimes free: —certifying when and where a certain. child was born and to whom, If your parents did not obtain a birth certificate for you soon after you were born, what can you do? If birth was registered properly, you can obtain a certificate by applying to the local registrar at your birthplace or the office of vital statistics at the state capital. Send your full name, date and place of birth, and names of both parents. In some localities such records were not kept until fairly recent times. In others the records have been wiped ou‘ by fire or flood Many San Franciscans . are having trouble establishing pension claims because of that city's disaster in 1906. Many births have been registered inaccurately or incompletely. Where parents have , not chosen a name for their new child, it is common for the doctor or midwife to register the baby only as the unamed male or female infant of the John Joneses. Often the given. names have never been filled in.. It is only since 1933 when Texas, finally conformed, that the United. States as a whole has had a standard registration, and only since January, 1, 1949, has the system been truly scienti-7. fic, with a number for every new baby. (A boy born that morning at Prattsville,: Ala., has. the lowest number.) Where no record can be found, , it is possible to obtain a "delayed" certifi7 cate by filing acceptable evidence of. your birth. Hospital records ordinarily suffice, or a statement form the attending physician: In some cases affidavits may be required from two persons who were at least 18 years old 'when you 'Were, born: Sueh persons, of course, are harder to find the oldei' you get. Further proof is your official record' in the first census after you were boin. If you know what your address was at the time, the Census Bureau in Washington, D. C., may be able to turn up the vital information about you. Other acceptable evidence includes certified church baptismal records, copies of atithentic family-Bible entries, organiza.-' tion membership records where birth information has / been included, and marriage or court records. ) • ,,e, • ( The minister had just finished :naming a plumber and a lovely young thing. When the ceremony was over, the plumber sidled up and whispered in the par-: son's ear: "I haven't any money; but • I can fix your gas meter so it won't register:"

NEW DISCOVERIES IN CENTRAL AMERICA Exactly five years ago this August, in :1947, your editor had the pleasure to listen to a series of lectures given by a professor of Chicago University in the halls of the Archeological Museum in Guatemala City. It was an invaluable introduction to the cultural history of Atherica in general and to the civilization of the Maya in .particular. I have long forgotten the name of the scientist who lectured, but I still do vividly remember his explanation that the Maya civilization was unique in that respect that it Was based on a grain of corn. As Mayans had known for countless centu•ies, a grain of corn was not a simple thing. It was a way of life. It reproduced itself without benefit of horse or plow ten er fifteen times as fast as any other grain,: oftentimes three hundred grains Cut of one kernel. It was during the lectures that I had heard one name to be constantly repeated, a name which sounded very much like the Czech word "palenka". The actual name was Palenque, one of the most important and magnificient Maya ruins. Then the lecturer took us around the museum to show us the numerous stelae found in Palenque, jade ornaments; stone tablets, and stucco work, in high and low relief. This ancient site of the Maya Culture, Palenque, which is not in Guatemala now but just across the boundary in the Mexican state of Chiapas, 'came into prominence recently. A secret chamber, the first link ever found between the pyramids of Central America and Egypt, has just been discovered beneath the thousand-year-old Mayan ruins deep in the lush jungle at Palenque. According to archaeologists, the discovery is the most important since the finding of the giant Aztec calendar Stone, a major key to deciphering the Aztec culture and it will revise the entire approach to the archeology and Mayan history. The chamber was a highly sacred altar room and perhaps a tomb. It contains a five-ton carved altar stone which the scientists valued at $500,000 and a ntimber of valuable jade, pearl and .carved stone of ferings. Dr. Rafael Orellana of the Mexican National Anthropological Institute, one of a team of three scientists who made the discovery, said, "We must change our whole system now. Palenque has given us something new to lock for in all the pyramids of Mexico." The scientists, after four years of work found a secret chamber deep in the

center of the eighty-foot pyramid supporting the graceful Temple of Inscriptions, so named because it bears a hieroglyphic mural believed to be the Mayan table cf laws. It is the first time that any inner rooms has been found in a Mexican pyramid, always thought to have been solid structures designed solely as platforms for the temples atop them and as observation posts for astronomical calculations. The discovery, if confirmed by other pyramids which will be opened, may allow anthropologists to draw up a new set of theories, on the mysterious origin of the people of Mexico through the parallel with the pyramids of Egypt, which were built around tombs. The first inkling that the Temple of Inscriptions held some surprise came when investigators noticed that one slab in its floor was pierced by six round stone pegs, three evenly spaced at each end. They managed to lift it, and found that a sidewall appeared to continue downward, although rocks and debris covered the opening. Because of the constant, steamy, rains in the state of Chiapas, where Palenque is located, the scientists could only work for three months each year. Finally, this season, they managed to clear out the triangular stairwell, a typical Mayan architectural form, and found, at the bottom, a door leading to a room slightly below ground level. In front of the door were six skeletons, sacrificed, Dr: Orellana said, to lie forever at the entrance as guardians of the sanctuary. From the jade-encrusted teeth, the remains were deduced to be those of young nobles. The walls of the chamber were heavily encrusted with stalactites and stalag: mites, but underneath, beautifull y intricate bas-reliefs were found in an most prefect state of preservation. In the very center of the room lay a five ton stone slab, finely carved with known Mayan symbols and an inscription which is expected to reveal the date of the work to be translated. The slab rests on another large stone which may be a hollow sarcophagus holding a body; it has yet to be pried up. Placed about the chamber were offerings of pearls, a well molded plaster head and jade ornaments. Doctor Orellana said some of the larger, more important pyramids may yield treasures of far greater value. The city of Palenque has been known to the world since 1782, when Spaniards found it. They were so astounded by its

architectUral sophistication that they considered it proof positive that Europeans had been there before them. The discoverers even. ;resurrected the old Spanish, belief, based on certain symbols in the Mayan religion including. the Palenque cross, that St. Thomas of Aquinas had made his way to Mexico and taught elements of Christianity to the Indians. Doctor Orellana and Mrs. Carmen' Cook de Leonard, an associate, reject that theory as they , reject the hypothesis that one of the lost tribes of Israel reached Mexico and inspired religious and scientific developments in the local civilization. "There are many parallels," Mrs. Leonard said, "but I believe they show that all religions stem originally from a single belief and have only developed differently while , guarding certain basic principles and symbols. The altar slab found at Palenque shows the god of life reclining atop the monster of the earth. The god is supporting the cross, and expression of the idea of a god sacrificing himself to give life to others. The arms of the Palenque cross are entwined with branches, a combination of the ancient symbols of the cross and the tree of life." The sun, a two-headed serpent and a quetzal, the brilliantly colored bird of Central America, also appear on the well-preserved altar stone. The border represents a parade of the celestial bodies. The scientists think that the room was sealed off and the entire pyramid filled in when the high priests suddenly abandoned Palenque, some time between 800 and 900 A. D. The reason for the abrupt desertion of the • city is still a mystery--At may have been conquest or it may have been erosion and ruin of the surrounding fields by the Mayan's primitive agriculture; still widely practiced in Mexico. Now, after a rnillenium of tranquility, the soil of Palenque is again rich, supporting a wilderness of luxuriant vendure. The Mayan. civilization, as reflected in Palenque, held odd contrasts of brilliant theoretical achievements and utter tech..' nological backwardness. The builders of the pyramids had neither metal with which to cut the huge stones they used, nor wheels with which to transport them, nor beasts of burden. Their only domestic animals were the turkey, the dog and the pig. Even today, the porkers of Chiapas have the long, pointed snouts and the stiff bristles of the wild boar.

NATIVE OF CZECHOSLOVAKIA SERVES AT SHEPPARD AFB "One day in 1945 I saw hundreds of American planes in the skies over Czechoslovakia on a • mission to destroy a German rail 'yard. That day I dreamed of being in the Air force that was bringing freedom to my country." This hope of Airman 3-C Lub:.:mir Vondra, 3751st Student Squadron, Sheppard Air Pone Base, has been fuilfilled. Airman Vondra, born in the Province of Moravia (now within the Iron Curtain) on Jan. 17, 1928, was a Member of a family whose identity and circumstances cannot be revealed. An independent republic from 1918, Czechoslovakia fell to Hitler after the Munich conference. During World War • II Vondra continued his education at a technical school, but he spent six months at forced labor on a railroad gang. His older sister was sent to a tank factory while his mother remained in Moravia. Both are now back in their own home, the airman believes, although he cannot write to them. In 1848, when the Communists took Czechoslovakia, Vondra, a 20-year-old college student, was secretary of a young folks organization which supported. President Benes against Moscow's agents. This group sent him to the president with a letter assuring the people's sup:: port. Vondra gave the letter to . the president's secretary. When he came home a member of the Communist secret police was waiting for him. Arrested and interrogated four hours by five of the police, he baffled his inqUisitors. The letter he had delivered was sealed, he told them. Contents and signature were unknown to him. Questions the Reds asked were: . "Who sent you to meet the president? "What was the purpose of the meeting? "Who was selected to go with you? "What message was in the letter? "Who signed it?" When he would not answer they slapped • him across the face. Finally one Red snapped: "Get out! We'll see more of each other soon." Two days later Vondra was called to the office of the college principal, a Communist. An order was issued that the youth report immediately to the ministry of labor. He was given the choice of working in a coal mine or a uranium mine. This offer was a subterfuge to cover deportation to a slave labor camp. Next day the young man fled from his home, carrying a suitcase, a compass and food for his perilous trip through

(Contributed by Otto Stehlik) four police lines. With a friend, now living in Illinois, he managed to cross the Communist workers' police line. Vondra's escape from the Reds and his long journey to America form a thrilling chapter in the saga of aliens from many lands now members of the Air Force family. The pair traveled at night through 100 miles of forest, evading the Redcontrolled military police and the frontier police, once narrowly escaping the latter whom they spotted at a woodsman's home. The last barrier was the border which was patrolled by the dreaded Russian NKVD with dogs. American Food In Germany four nights later they went to a German police station in. the first village. Tea and black bread broke their long fast. Then U. S. military police took them to their station where Vondra had his first American food— white bread, pork, potatoes, coffee, chocolate candy bars, and cigarets. "I was filled," he recalls. "An American said "Good luck to'you' and gave me a drink Of Whiskey ' After a stay in a Gelman refugee camp he finally reached Paris. One year's residence in France was needed for a visa, but he remained two years longer to learn the language. Vondra, who now spoke Czech, Russian, German and French, became a beneficiary of the , International Refugee Organization which sent him to the German port of Bremerhaven. There he embarked on a U. S. troop transport and arrived in New York on Nov. 11, 1951—still unacquainted with English. At Chicago he was met by his companion of the forest, and obtained work on a farm. He enlisted April 1, 1952, going to Lackland Air Force Base, Tex., for basic training. "My flight chief was most kind. He helped out in my difficulties in speech and in explaining orders," Vondra states. The alien airman must have been outstanding, for his squadron commander chose him to receive the American Spirit Honor Medal. Selected as a squad leader, his citation lauds his "leadership and comradeship." At Sheppard's Aircraft Mechanics School co-operative instructors and fellow students still help him improve in English. As a former college technical student, Vondra is impressed at the school. "The standard of education in the Air Force is very high", he observes. "There is not

the great gap in relations between officers, NGO's and the lower grades as in Europe. Here the Air Force is democratic and one can talk to others as man to man." 1 • 4 • (

ARE MELONS WORTH BUYING? This question comes in frequently— apparently it's just human nature to feel that we ought to get good solid nourishment for our food money. However, a quick look at any table listing the water content of various foods might surprise you. Melons are watery, , no doubt about it; they average about 91 to 94 per cent water. But then a boiled potato is 75 to 80 percent water, cooked beef is 52 to 60 per cent, and plain cottage cheese close to 70 per ,cent. Most vegetables are at least 80 per cent water — many are over 95 per cent — and fresh fruits start at 75 per cent. So why discriminate against melons? When it comes to judging whether they're "worth what they cost," remember that all melons give you an abundance of Vitamin C. Cantaloupes are particularly rich (half of cantaloupe equals a four-once glass of fresh orange juice), but honeydews and watermelon are very worth while. In addition, melons are high in potassium, the mineral' element that helps preserve the proper fluid balance in your body tissues. To top it all off, melons are low in calorie count -- a boon to weight watchers. When you can get so much good from foods with such wonderful flavor, maybe it's only fair to forget about water content. ) ' 4 ' Displaying ner wedding gifts, the bride came to one from the groom's Army buddy. "I just adore these personalized gifts," she said. "We received towels and washcloths with HIS and HERS on them, but,"—and she blushed—"this is even more personal." She held up an olive drab blanket with the letters US stamped in the middle. • 4, • If you fail to get your Vestnik, don't write to Houston or to West, but send your notice to the Supreme Lodge in Fayetteville. I Seven ,Stages of Sleep

THE LONG SHOT (By Ross Phares, Professor of English, - Marshall, Texas) If you think there were no tricks in the racing business before the advent' of leased wires and professional bookies, you haven't heard the story. of Sham Hays and the race he pulled off near Brownsville. Texas, nearly a hund cl years ago. The managers of the course, on the Monongahela, announced a race of one mile wheats, purse ,of $100, for anything "with four legs and hair." In the settlement there lived a man named Hays, whose custom it was to ride a bull to mill, carrying sacks of corn. Hays determined to enter his bull in the race. So. on several moonlight nights, he took the ponderous animal to the grounds, ttnd, in secret sessions, rode him around the track to show him the lay of the canso, and to practicearunninR hi one direction. On the day of the race, Hays rode his bull onto the grounds. Instead of a saddle he cued a dried oxhide. The head, with haus Mill on jogged inanely atop the bull's rump. Bays rode with spurs, and carried a In hot-a in his hand. When he appeared at the judge's stand to enter his mount, the horse owners objected. Hays cited the terms of the announcement, pointed out that his bull had four legs and hair, and insisted that he had ‘,/ ii-;ht to enter the competition. The argument soon reached the " : "cusAu" st., t;e, The horsemen, of coarse• knetN there was no hazard to their chances at the prize money; but -What a (tan gal nuisance, having a built a race track!.. running Itys ,Mond fivrt, and judges ruled that accordina to the announcements, the but had tb • right to I an. The ricers lined their mounts . Pp at f he starting post, the equestrians considering the bull phase of the race just a gag. that would be over as soon as the hot:ses broke and s isiot clear •of the ignohlc creature. Understandably the horses en cii. -ter side of t he bull were shy; but no t,;bite''. The startine, signal sounded, and the aninittls were off. Hays blew a blast on his tin horn, and sank his spurs into I he bull's sides. The bull bounded forward sett ta. a terrifying. bellow, at no triiJi.igspeed; the dried oxhide flapped up twct down, rattling at every bound. Altogether there was a frightful combination of sight and sound never before experienced on a race course. The horses dashed frantically in every direction ex-

cent doWn the track 'udder control in.time to beat the bull to the finish line. The horse Owners, hopping with rage, cried "Swindle," that Hays was not en:titled to the purse! But the spectators, ever on the side of the underdog, and en:joymg one of the greatest shows ever seen at a race track, were loudly insistent that their favorite should get the money. The judges, in a dilemma, finally put the prize on the horn of the bull. Then the owners contended that had it not been for Hay's horn and the oxhide, which should never have been permitted on a decent track, he would not have won. To the surprise of everyone, Hays cooly announced his bull could beat them. anyway. If they would put 11) another -$100 against. the purse he had just Won, he would run again with neither horn nor hide. The racers jumped at this fool s Anybody who would ride a bull for LIH saddle animal about the con unit y, and have the audacity to challenae horses of the blood to a race en even terms, was entitled to a good cleaning! To a man, they called his ':)ta:t.• And so the racers lined up for the second. heat. At the signal, Hays ripped his rowels acro,s the ribs, and the brute isttued a hollow that all but jumped the horses through their gills. They were nervt.tus already from the first race, and doubtless expected a repeat performance. No pulling on the bits would line the horses down the track with the bull. From that first roaring bellow, the way was all his. Nobody would have believed that a man could have won one race—to say nothing Ira --- in a day, riding a bull against the fastest horses along the Rio Grande. But Hays did! And from that day • on he was known as Sham.

Six men 'and one woman who slept with an ingenibus gadget' attached : ' to the ear have been t'grVing scienee'.Soine new answerS to the age -old' myStery of Sleep. Dia Robert A,' Schneider ' and J. W: Lovett Doust studied the sleepers over a three-month period at. New York •espital. The ear-gadget was a device which measured the fluctuating:amount of . oxygen in the blood: When we're,,wide awake; • oxygen saturation in our arteries Ls at its maXiMuin, about 96 per Cent;' when we're in deep sleep, oxygen values:drop to their lowest point, around 87 per cent. The slintiberstudy revealed seven stages Of sleep and wakefulness. Oxygen values drcip Consistently as we ekre'of f fromWide-"aWake to pre-sleep, then to light SleeP, finally to deep sleep, then increase as we go throU gh the stages in reverse to full awakening. In the first stage of sleep (Wakefiliness) a e yawn, „cough; and Sigh — conscious but invonnitary actions--to help. condition us to sleep, In the next, or, presleep stage, we , have periods of shallow breathing alternatin g with deepbreathing, more or less automatic,. although we're still conscious of them. Iii passing over to the third or light sleep stage, a curious kind of conduct was observed. The sleepers tended to scratch or rub their itchy skin, particularly the face, nose and neck. They were only half-aware of this activity, but it was so manifest that it gave a good clue that the patient was dropping off into light sleep, the third stage. • Noisiness is a conspicuous indication that the Sleeper- has arrived at stages three and four—light sleep and deep sleep respectively, "Groaning, mumbling, grunting, gasping, snoring, sighing, and sometimes coughing" are characteristic. "A trumpeting snore often at a time when exceptionally low oxygen levels have been reached, and seems to be a mechanism for returning the saturation values to their previous levels. Sometimes, as we have all observed, such snoring aWakens the sleeper." It appears that the capacity of noise to disturb or awaken us depends on the stage. of sleep we're in. While we're just dropping !off ,to sleepa or half awakened, blood-oxygen is little affected. We're then aware enough , of the source of noise not to be too disturbed. In deep sleep, we're oblivious to noise. But in light sleep, before and after deep sleep, a sudden noise causes to awaken you. If you can manage it, banish noise at these stages and you'll sleep better.
