OUR BOYS DESERVE CREDIT It is one of the solemn and eternal duties for every public man, be the public man a teacher, politician, preacher or editor. to encourage young people.. Your editor may be criticized now and then for giving a bit of publicity to some young boy or a young lady. It is my duty to do so. Sometimes a bit of recognition serves as a right kind of stimulus to help temporarily over the rough road of life. Sometimes a few words of sympathy and general interest may reveal, to us that the young people are thinking along the same lines as we do. Sometimes we are pleasantly surprised at the outcome when we remove our crust of apparent indifference. About a year ago, your editor made a trip to Seymour, Stamford, Rowena, and San Angelo. While in Rowena, my wife and I stopped at Kvasnicka's farm. Brother Emil Kvasnicka phoned to Joe Holubec and his wife about our visit. Later, on our way to San Angelo, we stopped at the handsome residence of Brother Holubec. He and his wife gave us very friendly welcome. During the conversation we drifted into the discussion of our children. They showed us picturse almost forgotten, and pictures of the same children as brides and bridegrooms. And also a picture of the youngest . son, a sophomore at the A and M College. Brother Holubec was a delegate to the Fort Worth convention. He did not attend the 16. convention in Houston. If he were a delegate this year, he would have been proud to support the estab. lishment of the chair of Slavonic languages at the A and M College. And more so after he would find out what his youngest son Melton thinks about the convention's sponsorship. Here • is his son's idea: "Dear Editor: "In answer to your letter, I am glad to give you my 'opinion about the Czech courses at A and M. "SOme people may wonder what Texas A and M College is like and why the new Chair of Slavonic languages was set up al this institution. I don't know for sure why the Chair was not set up sooner, but maybe it was because of the lack of financial support. Money is no longer the obstacle in the success of, this project. He did also exceptionally well during his three years at Texas A and M College. Thus, he held cadet rank as a sophomore and junior. As a sophomore he held the rank of Corporal. He was also selected as "The Best Drilled Sophomore of D Equadron," which is the highest honor a cadet may hold in an outfit. THE RIGGER THE CROSS

A somewhat amusing bit of advice has been printed hither and yon around the country for several years and it may be time for us to offer it to you: If you must drink, hand your wife $18.00 and tell her to buy a gallon of whisky. Let her be your bartender. Buy all your drinks from her at fifty cents a drink. You know there are 96 drinks in a gallon of whisky, 'so at fifty cents a drink, she'll have $48.00 by the time you finish your first gallon. That will give her $30.00 to put in the bank and $18.00 to buy another gallon of whisky. If you live ten years . .. and continue to buy all your booze from your wife, she'll have enough money to educate your children, buy a house and a car, give you a respectable burial, and marry a decent man after you die with littie green snakes before your eyes. • * Contentment is a wonderful thing — but only for cows.

It is always important for us to remember that every person we meet has some cross, some ghost, some fear; but the people who have the big ghosts — the big fears are the ones who seem to tap life's deepest secrets. Helen Keller, deaf and blind, could not escape, She had to live with her handicaps. This she did to the inspiration of all humanity. We must learn to make friends with the things we fear. I doubt if any heart has ever been 'noble that wasn't once broken. I doubt if anyone has ever found greatness who didn't have great difficulties to face. Facing them, living with them he found life. The bigger the cross, the greater the life. There are no hopeless situations. There are only men who have grown hopeless about them.

Can You Break a Habit? I know a young woman who has been trying for a year to break a habit which she believes to be detrimental. The chances are that the habit itself isn't nearly so detrimental as the feeling of failure which comes to her when she can't seem to break it. She told me the other day that she had given up trying to break the habit. "It isn't worth the candle to knock myself out over it," she said. "Don't you agree that it's impossible to break a habit once it gets a firm hold?" Of course, I don't believe that.' It's not only possible to break a habit — any habit --- but the very act of breaking a habits is in itself a personality exercise which is valuable to anyone. Where most habit-breakers fall down is in not having the right technique at the start. If they were to get the -right viewpoint toward the habit, they could break a habit of years' standing in a few seconds I mean that! A psychiatrist was telling me of the experience of a woman who had been a pitiful victim of the habit of drinking. One day she announced calmly, "I, have quit." That was the end of it., She. had quit. It was as simple as that. It was also permanent. If you have been wrestling with habits, making res:lution .z, backsliding, worrying about your lack of will power, you may be finding it hard to believe that anyone can be strong enough to say, "I have quit" — and mean it." I assure you that will power has little to do with the matter. It is largely a matter of strategy. The idea is not to break the- habit, but the desire which creates the habit. To be practical, suppose you are trying to quit smoking. Instead of giving- up the habit itself, convince yourself that you have no desire to smoke. Just forget that you want to smoke. If you can get over the desire, you won't want to smoke, and the ,habit will no longer have any hold on you. It will be a broken habit. . , It is a little difficult for anyone to explain exactly how this interesting idea works, 'or to show why it is effective. But if you have habit that you want to break but haven't been able to with old methods, try this formula just once. I believe I can guarantee that it will work. ) • 4, • To accept a favor from a real friend is to confer one.

TEN TIPS FOR GOOD CITIZENS Do you think politics is a dirty word? And that politicians are shady characters? If so, you condemn yourself—for you, too, are a politician, and a pretty weak one if you think you are above politics. The citizen who abstains from politics is not a non-politician. He is merely an ineffective fpclitidian Who unwittingly serves as an ally of the worst machine bosses, ward heelers, and peddlers of influence. Politics has been defined as "the study of influence and the influential." You can be influential—for good or bad —but you can't avoid having influence. If you register, if you vote in primary and general elections, if you properly "pressure" your elected representatives, if you are an all-year-round citizen— your action will serve to strengthen the responsible party leaders and to weaken the party bosses. The result may be government policies and practices that help you, your family, and your fiends, William Q. Smith did not understand this. Bill had such a' low opinion of politicians that he never troubled to register or vote, much less take part in the campaigns. And because a lot of people felt and acted as he did, his city was badly run. Many of the streets had gaping holes in the pavement, and most of them needed repaving. The city never seemed to manage garbage collection. The public schools were so overcrowded, inadequately staffed, and poorly run that the Smiths felt that they had to send their children to private schools at considerable extra expense. Even the police department was behind the times and inadequate, as Bill could testify from personal experience. Recently a neighbor of his who had come home late at night had been held up and robbed within two blocks of his home, and the police had never succeeded in catching the holdup man. Yet for all of its poor services, Bill's city had one of the highest tax rates in the country. Bill also complained about such national issues as taxes and the inadequacy of social security and unemployment benefits. Yet he r never thought of doing anything about them. All of this does not mean that Bill Smith was a. person simply because he didn't vote. Nor does it mean that getting a lot of people to vote is the complete answer to our public problems. The fact remains, however, that Bill was an armchair citizen and, as such, he mortgaged the right to criticize the

conditions that resulted from his inac-i tion. Poor government begins at home, right at the grass-roots level. When you read about a scandal involving a federal official, you may generally be sure that the officialy in question was "sponsored" by a local party organization. If you think the actions of a United States Senator or Congressman are not in the public interest, you should lock to the county or municipal party organization which gave him his start in politics. If you disapprove of your governor, look to the local roots of his influence. And, of course, if your local school board or city government seems inefficient or unresponsive to your conmmunity needs, the direct influence of the local political organization or lack thereof should be clear. No matter where we find corruption or waste or plain incompetence in, government—whether federal, state, or local —we must look down to the grass-roots of politics. And hidden -behind all of these, cases' is the individual citizenpolitician—you. Following are ten suggestions that may help the year-round citizen improve his effectiveness: 1. If you live outside a large central city, read a local newspaper as well as a large metropolitan daily. The small weekly newspaper often provides revealing news on the activities of your local party 'officials and elected representatives, on their friends and supporters. 2. Have someone in your organization keep a score-card on the votes and other actions of your representatives, or better yet, persuade your local newspaper to keep such a score card. Learn the rudiments of parliamentary procedure so that you may better interpret apparently innocent maneuvers such as voting to recommit a bill. 3. Attend your town or city council meetings or have your organization assign one or more members to that responsibility. Remember that in most communities only the special interest groups bother to be represented at budget hearings and other significant council meetings. The good public official alway welcomes testimony from a group devoted to the general public interest as well as from sincere individuals. 4. Get acquainted with your neighbors; discuss local problems with them; persuade them to take part in local political activity; if they are new in the community, talk over such problems as good utility services, adequate garbage collection, etc.

5. Try to develop an understanding of propaganda techniques and the maneuverings of political leaders and groups. A program in the public interest is often blocked by the "yes", but—" technique, by honeyed words of lip-service, by crippling amendments offered by avowed supporters of a program, by repeated referral to committees, by the call for further study, and by a few damning emotional slogans 'that utilize the catch words of democracy, unity, etc. Look out for the committee that is "loaded" in favor or against a specific proposition or candidate. LOok out for the big-lie technique used by the smear artist. Learn the difference between an idle statute and a law that is really being enforced. 6. Learn to compromise—not with your principles, of course—but in ways that will facilitate effective action by your organization. Group action depends upon compromise. The individual who is completely uncompromising stands in the way of any effective action. The other extreme would welcome a totalitarian approach in which the rank and file follow a party line slavishly. In between these extremes is a system of self-imposed discipline that doesn't surrender freedom of thought. Your ability to ,compromise is related to your ability to deal with people. If you're a newcomer offering your services to a party organization, you may receive anything but a ,`glad-hand" reception from old-line party workers. Get over the hurdle and you'll find that working with different types of people — politics—can be a lot of fun as well as worth-while activity. 7. As a member Of any non-partisan organization, help your organization to participate in citizenship development and action in keeping with its charter and purposes. In other words, don't try to lead a nonpartisan group down the partisan byways, but try to keep before the group its civic responsibilities broadly conceived. Do your partisan work outside. 8. Always remember that every public issue is a political issue, that we are all politicians, that we can be good politicians, only if we participate actively in partisan and non-partisan organizations. Politics, but not democracy, has been for many a bad word. Yet in a democracy more people can take part in politics and the people can have more (Continued on page 23.),

Don't Postpone Making Your Will! The September issue of the Reader's Digest published this article written by ,Terame Beatty. Many of our members do riot get the Reader's Digest. Some at those who do get it regularly may not get to read the article for one rea-, son or another. We wish you would read it. And for those who may not have the September copy, we reprint the article slightly condensed. Even ,if you have a will, it may need revision. Get it in shape. It is more important than your certificate. About half of those who die and leave property do so without having made a .will. The result is confusion, injustice and, often, serious want. And it is a paradox that the less you own the more likely you are to need a will. Some people believe it's bad luck to anticipate death and so refuse to make a will. One of these was a New England businessman with an estate of $100,000, a wife and a married, childless son. Instead of making a will, he gave the bulk of his property to his son, with instructions as to the care of it. A few months later, the son was killed in an auto accident. The son left no will, so the probate court divided his estate according to state law: first the daughter-in-law received $5000; then one half the remainder went to her and one half to the son's father and mother. Thus the father lost more than half of all he owned to his daughter-in-law, who soon remarried. A simple will usually costs $25 or less. One, that disposes of a large, complicated estate runs higher, although Edward H. Harriman, the railroad magnate, disposed of millions of dollars through a will that might have cost as little as $10, It contained only 99 words and left -eyarytlaing to his widow. Every father and mother with minor children ought to make a careful will. For if the father should die intestate that is , without a will—the law is devised to protect his children from possible extravagance or selfishness on the part of his wife — and that it does with a vengeance. The court will appoint an a:dministratior and a guardian, usually the mother, who will have to be 'bonded. She probably will have to employ a lawyer to arrange for the guardianship and go to court to get permission!for allowances for the care of the :children and for the sale 'or rental of property. The same laws apply to an intestate urthermore, many a husband puts in his wife's name a honie

which he has invested almost all' his savings, and in some states, if the wife dies first, childless and without a will, part of the estate in her name can go to her tielatives, Also, a wife usually has cherished possesions that she wants to pass on to children or other close relatives; if she leaves no will they eventually may go to a new wife. Your will should be checked frequently. Don't scratch out some things and write in others. That usually invalidates it, A simple codicil -- an addition, witnessed — may do the job. You may have made specific bequests that should be revised because of changes in your financial condition or that of your heirs. You may have been worth $50,000 and made a will "leaving $5000 to my brother Lucius." Perhaps today you're worth only half that. To protect the other heirs, you should have left Lucius "one tenth, which in no event shall exceed $5000." Inheritance and estate laws vary greatly. When you move from one state to another look over your will minutely. You should leave enough cash or liquid assets to cover taxes without forced sales of your property. How are you U. S. Savings Bonds made out? A widow invested most of her husband's estate in Savings Bonds, payable upon death to her sister. The widow married again and, forgetting the way the bonds were made out, made a will leaving them to her husband. When she died the sister pot them, in spite of the will. Don't leave will-making until the last moment. Facing death, many a person deals unjustly with his heirs, remembering a well-to-do cousin who attended him in his last illnes and forgetting a hard-up sister whose savings years ago paid his way through college. Sometimes people dying of tuberculosis, cancer or heart disease impulsively leave everything to one 'of the funds set up to combat these killers, or to a hospital. This is a noble idea, but it is often unfair to the heirs. If you have no children and want to leave everything to your spouse, you may need no will. Don't make that decision; however, without a lawyer's advice. If life insurance or U. S. Savings Bonds are payable to the wife, she gets them, will or no will. If real estate, bonds savings and checking accounts are jointly owned by husband and wife, they go directly to the survivor. In some states the first $5,000 of the remaining property goes to the surviving spouse,

and parents, brothers and sisters may have a claim on what is left. If a husband and wife who have used the joint-ownership plan die in the same accident, leaving no children, relatives of each often attempt to prove that their blood , relative died last so they'll get a share. A will with a "common disaster" clause stipulates where the property shall go if husband and wife die within 30 days of one another. In 19 states a will entirely in your own handwriting, and dated, is legal provided it is obvious that it is a will and not an informal letter or memorandum. If a printed form is used, or any part is printed or typewritten ., it must be witnessed. If you write merely, " give all my property to my wife. This is my will," and sign and date it, it's a good will in those 19 states. It's good anywhere if it is properly signed by three witnesses. Often, however, more language may be necessary, and without legal advice on wording you may ball things, up. In Arkansas a widower wanted to divide his estate equally among his 23 nieces and nephews; his will declared that the estate should be "divided equally between all my nephews and nieces on my wife's side and my own niece (naming her)." The court decided that "equally between" -didn't mean "equally among"; half was distributed to his wife's 22 nephews and nieces, and half to his own niece. Courts require an exact procedure for witnessing a will. In the New England states, in Georgia and South Carolina, three witnesses are called for; two are sufficient in the other states. However, it is always advisable to have three, as it will be easier to locate enough to prove the will. The witnesses must be adults who have no interest in the estate. They need not knoW what is in the document but must be together, preferably in a closed room. You must declare clearly, "This is my last will and testament and I want you to sign as witnesses." They watch you initial each page and watch you sign at the end. Then all present watch each witness write his or her name and address. Some states allow a self-proving affidavit. After the witnesses sign the will, they also sign a notarized clause stating that the will has been properly executed and the maker is of sound mind. Then, if the will is not contested, witnesses need not appear after the maker's death. The executor is saved the sometimes arduous and costly task of trying to find

Wednesday, August 27, 1952. the witnesses, or of proving the signatures of those who cannot be located. If your will contains no selfproving affidavit, anticipate and prevent trouble by checking up on your witnesses about once a year. Be sure they will be easy to find and cooperative. If any have died or cannot be found, or if you or they have moved to another community, make a new . will with new witnesses. Have your old will typed word for word if you want no changes, and have it witnessed. You can do this yourself. Simple wills for small estates usually name the chief heir as executor, without bond. If the estate is large and its administration complicated, the executor will need expert help. Choose a dependable lawyer or businessman as coexecutor; don't name an inexperienced man merely because he is your best friend. Your lawyer will give you a carbon copy of your will for your files, but don't sign it. A man who signed a duplicate later destroyed it, and the probate court, deciding that he probably forgot about the other one, dedreed that he purposely had invalidated his will. A jointly held safety-deposit box is a safe place for a will, but it is sealed upon the death of one of the renters, and your heirs may have to go through some legal rigmarole to get it. If • you name an executor you might leave the will with him. In some states, upon payment of $1, you may deposit a will with the probate court. Whatever you do, be less casual than 80-year-old Mrs. Harriet Sylvia Howland Green Wilks. She left an estate of $95,000,000 — and her will was finally found under cakes of soap in a tin cabinet in one of her four homes. • 4 • ( If you fail to get your Vestnik, don't write to Houston or to West, but send your notice to the Supreme Lodge in Fayetteville. YOUR CHILD MAY BE A GENIUS Dr. Pierce, one of the professors who had tried to implant in me some principles of psychology, had a favorite phrase: "The genes of stupidity and genius are well distributed." Once Dr. Pierce started his lecture with a story of a couple who came to the United StateS from Russia. Both husband and wife were young scientists. He taught psychology and psychiatry at Harvard Where he became a close friend of William James, the noted psychologist. Whep the first child was born to - these two yourk scientists, they named the boy William James Sidis. Billy Sidis went through all eight grades of the Boston elementary school system in five months, when he was seven. At eight, he required only six weeks for the entire high-school curriculum. At 11, by special invitation, he lectured to the Harvard faculty on the fourth dimension. At 15 he taught at Rice Institute in Houston, Texas. And that' not all. At three Billy used a typewriter. At four he read and understood textbooks. At 11 he called Einstein's attention to a "flaw" in the theory of relativity. At an age when most children are learning to spell "cat" he invented a perpetual calendar which was patented and is still in use. There wasn't any doubt that William James Sidis, who died of pneumonia at the age of 46, in 194f, was a genius. Nor does there seem to be any doubt that a method was used to make him one. The same method was applied to his sister, Helen. She attended neither grammar school nor high school. At 15 she easily passed the college-entrance exams at Smith. Psychological tests were cited to prove 'that both these children were only "average". But educators refused to budge from their opinion that the Sidis children were hereditary geniuses. Today a large university is conducting a thorough investigation of this geniuscreating program. This amazing system of education is called the Sidis method, after Dr. Sarah Sidis and Dr. Boris Sidis, Billy's parents. The late Dr. Boris Sidis was a Harvard profesor, a doctor of both psychology and psychiatry, and author of too many books on the mind for any short listing. There were many others besides Billy' on whom the Sidis method was used in varying degrees. Harvard students with failing grades came to Dr. Sidis and became honor students. There was a Boston tailor who had one great ambition: to read Spinoza. But he was illiterate. One day in hil

shop, Dr. Sidis admired a coat. The tailor made the psychologist this proposition: "You teach me to read and write and I will give you the coat." In three months he was writing and reading, and quoting Spinoza. Dr. Sidis, who turned education into child's play, died in 1923, but he left his wife, Dr. Sarah Sidis, to continue his method. Dr. Sarah Sidis, now a little old lady of 77, is also a psychiatrist. She "retired" to Miami Beach, Fla.,'several years ago. Her retirement means she is writing two books (a history of the Sidis family and a text for the method); lecturing at the University of 'Miami; and running a property-rental business. She has added her share to the development of the method, too. Her touch has humanized it, taken it out of ,%the specific "case history" terms of science. The Sidis method stresses starting young. But suppose your children a,re already partly grown. Or suppose you don't have the time or patience to put the system to work "in toto." You can still use the Sidis principles with good effect, 1. Avoid punishment in all ways possible; it is the first cause of fear. 2. Try not to say "don't." Instead, explain why what you say is so. 3. Awaken curiosity; it is the key to learning. 4. Never fail to answer and never put off your child's questions. 5. Never force your child to learn nor judge his ability to learn by adult dards. 6. Implant ideas at bedtime, just be•• fore sleep. Suggestions made then will make a solid impression. 7. Never lie to your child or use eVa, sions. 8. Refrain from showing him off. • Now let's take a hypothetical Johnny and apply the Sidis method to him. You, the parents, are "average" and. so is your son Johnny. Your basic tools are 1. love, 2. an understanding of him that will help him avoid fear, and 3. willingness to help him develop his reason. In the first year, when Johnny's, gurgling and cooing, your love is the most natural thing in the world. Give him all you can. As for fear, guard him against the two basic ones, of -falling and not being fed. And of course, no punishment. That means not using a cross voice or imparting just a little slap. The subconscious "trap" never forgets even if immediate memory does. In Johnny's second year, it is time to

The rd iior it now is affinity, ,end tbis means not 'only kindness, pa tience. and understanding but also your complete intellectual response to him whenByer his eagerness seeks your at tention. Here's hew you put that idea I work. Johnny is playing in his play pen or on the floor, get down with him as often as yott- can. Johnny is old enough .by this time to do a few things that may annoy- you.. to your utmost. refrain from saying "Don't" Don't means the same thing as "Don't think; I'll do the thinking for you." Johnny now needs a few toys. Dr. Sidis advises brightly colored blocks with pictures of animals and other objects on them and the corresponding words written out. Johnny isn't going to read or spell now. But later he will begin to say words like dog. if, he has in his mind the dog on the block and the word written out, it's going- to help. It's that subconscious "trap" in action again. Dr. Sidis also recommends jigsaw puz.zle that isn't hard to find. This is a map of the U. S., each piece a state in Color. As for other toys, give him the usual ones, especially balls and athletic games. At this point Johnny is trying to talk. Don't speed things up by force. Repetition is the dull, long way. And, equally important, make it plain that 'everything that is Johnny's isspecially Johnny's. His toys aren't allowed to get mixed in with adult equipment, or his sister's or brothers. • Johnny becomes two. The words' he says are more distinct. He May even Start reading this year. At this time it's a good idea to be careful of Johnny's -eyes. Some children who begin reading early develop eye trouble. 'If he doeS read' so early, con stilt • an eye Specialist. Also - make sure that he- gets plenty of exercise and play. That's very ithportant. What you- want is ft healthy genius, not a neurotic intellectUal. At r three, Johnny pops questions at you about flowers, about stars, about eVerything. There are plenty of books to help you with the answers. Perhaps the ones you will use are-meant for dren twice his age, but that's all right. Dr Sidis advises trying to keep his education within the framework of general edUcation. Knowledge of his body serves well and easily as an introduction to natural functions . . Also, in this way, health habits can be explained instead of enforcech "Surprises, games, and activities are the keynotes," Dr. Sidis . explains. "His world is full of enthusiasm. This way even provides a chance to explain what his skin is; which is an introduction to the whOle bodY, the Process of life, and everything else." At school age, the course ahead broad and variable. You can, however, if you wish, do what Dr. Sidis did with Billy. Instead of fairy stories at this time she..read mythology to him. This .led to stars ,which have the same names, as the mytholoOcal deities, so astrononay folloWed..Of all the array of nature( the stars and planets have a special fascination for children—and a grasp of astronomy later leads to mathematics. The point in all this is that Johnny is encouraged to think for himself. He will be able to understand for himself. There now enters into this a process called "glamorization." Billy Sidis was a perfect example 'of this. When he entered a Boston elementary school, and by noon was promoted to the 3rd . grade, he had a command of the physical sciences, history, and literature. But he couldn't add a simple column of figures. Arithmetic just 'didn't interest him, yet. At this time a young mathematics .professor began visiting the Sidis home. Billy met him, and the friendly young professor made such a hit that Billy overnight adopted mathematics as his chief interest. His progress was so rapid that it wasn't long before the professor, who was writing a book on the slat ject, began handing each new portion of the script to Billy for his opinion. Of course„. you must, give your child equipment: encyclopaedia, typewriter, dictionary,. reference books. He's far More advanced, in many . subjects than you are, Yet what he will become, depends largely on what subject you glamorize. You must be cautious about this "glamorization." Try to keep his interests general, and let specialization come at a. later age. Modern education, in contrast to the Sidis method, advocates "ingrade" dev.elopment. The "skipping" of years ago, in which some children were able to outrun others ,has disappeared, in order to stress social adjustment. However, the two systems can dovetail. Modern teachers are themselves taught to let a child progress as fast as„.he can and never to retard an anti, tude. If your Betty or Johnny is able to read Euclid in the 1St grade, the teacher is there to encourage him, pro-

viding he can also count to ten, 20, or 1000 or whatever is required. ) • • t POPULATION RISE

As our country grOws, it grows stronger, it grows bigger too. With marriage and birth rates climbing at record clip, and death rate staying low, we're in period of our history's biggest population growth. By 1955 the U. S. likely will be 165 million strong. By 1960, 179 ,million. All of which means we're in for great changes and shifts in our economic life. 1111011110110 ..... 1 l 111111 11 IMO 1
