Oba dva vyhrnuli nosanky nahoru a Ferdik, ten 3tarM rekl: "O, 6 sestru, my chceme bratra, abychom byli tri muSketY •i." MUSINGS OF THE EDITOR SINCERE GREETINGS to every reader of the Vestnik from Boston, Massachusetts, where president Marek and your editor is attending the National Fraternal Congress. Originally, secretary Chupick and director Skrabanek planned to go, too, but at the last moment both of them changed their plans on account of some other more urgent duties. Consequently, instead of four of us, only Brother Marek and the editor made the long trip. IT WAS A LONG TRIP, which took a good portion of four long days of hard driving in the SPJST car. We left Friday morning from Houston. At nine that morning we crossed the Louisiana state line at Logansport. Then there were seven hours of driving through the northern part of Louisiana until we crossed the Missippi River at Greenville, Miss. The city of Memphis, Tenn., was our destination. But after vie ate a supper, we decided to push forward. THERE IS NOTHING more pleasing than to find a clean, well-recommended, AAA approved, tourist court in the middle of the night -after eighteen hours of driving. We stopped in Tennessee, slept five hours, and without breakfast pushed along through the winding mountains. Not exactly mountains, but the sharp turns seemed to never end. A short stop for a toast and a miserable cup of coffee delayed us only a few minutes. Then on and on, through the morning, watching the tobacco patches, nothing else but tobacco curing barns, through the state of Kentucky all afternoon, until we crossed the stateline of Ohio. BUT WE HAD SOME 250 mile to go. This time our stopping point was set as Akron, Ohio. We hoped to average 55 miles an hour, but there was no use of trying. Up and down, up ' and down, sharp turns and narrow road, yet they called it the U. S. Highway. Some, of the ordinary farm roads in Texas are much better. Heavy trucks and moving vans kept on groaning up the hill, or speeding down the hill, and always a string of cars in the opposite direction. We reached Akron, Ohio, six hours behind

cur schedule. Add to it one hour for the Ea.stern time and another hour for the daylight saving time, and we could not believe our eyes that it was half past one. Sunday morning, when we slipped under two blankets. • • AND THE SAME. DRIVE next day, Sunday. Already third day on the way and seven hundred miles further to go. No need of pushing the accelerator. Town after town, one long row of towns, and every one of them said that the speed was strictly enforced, 25 or 30 miles an hour. A traveler just started to resume the normal speed when the sign said: reduce your speed—hill. One often wondered if the last word was not misspelled. * * IT WAS AGAIN PAST ONE, Monday morning, when we pulled up at a hotel. No tourist courts to be found that night. The wrist-watch showed five when we started Monday morning, but the local time was seven. What's the use. We can't make it to Boston by nine-thirty for the first session: Let's have breakfast, Wow! Seventy cents, plus sales tax. The good old Texas. And we are supposed to be in the Empire State. The prices did resemble the Empire building.

the hotel after some twisting and circling. Yes, we have the reservation. It was sent on September fifth. No, sir, no reservation, no rooms. The dickens, it was sent by our secretary. Let's see, what name it was sent in? No, nothing here. Let's try another name. Where is the manager or the assistant manager? Well, I'll be! •

DISGUSTINGLY, WE TRIED another hotel three blocks away. The car has already been put up, because it couldn't stand in the street jamming the traffic. Well, we will get taxi, go to the other hotel. Our baggage has already been placed in a lobby. Oh, what's the use. It does- happen even in the best-regulated family once in ten years. We missed a day of session, we dint have a reservation and we couldn't find our registration as delegates to the National Fraternal Congress. Oh; yes, the tickets were sent in. • • IT WAS A PITY that we missed .the first day. Everything which pertained to the discussion of the organizers' work, the field managing, was scheduled for Monday. We should have started one day earlier. There were so many excellent topics scheduled for that day, and we missed every one of them. Every session of the Fraternal Congress starts with the organizational work. And since we were interested in the courses for the organizers, and the fraternal courses at some universities, we really missed the boat. Just a case of misinformation that the Congress would begin Tuesday instead of Monday, and we had planned accordingly.

AND THROUGH some more queer towns with cobble -stone pavement after we crossed the Hudson River in the upper New York. We have already missed the morning session, and it looked as if we would miss also the afternoon session. We should have started a day earlier. So let's stop to have a bite to eat, something quick. Fried oysters. Good, but rather expensive for two bucks a small plate. But the coffee tasted good. TWO MAGIC WORDS My house was separated from a sheer drop into the sea by a narrow strip of earth, A sort of footpath had been beaten along the brink, but it was seldom used. One afternoon I was sitting on the perch, feeling very sorry for myself. . . There was nothing to do but watch the foolish, top-heavy pelicans throwing themselves into the sea. And then to wait for the delayed sound of the splash. Presently a stranger appeared far along the footpath — an old man who walked very slowly, as if his feet hurt. As he came into focus, I saw he was dressed in a pair of dungarees and a coat with a flutter of rags at the elbow. There was a wedge-shaped rip in the crown cf his hat, which he removed politely when he caught sight of me. "Hello," I said. He Smiled, and, hobbling across what passed for a lawn, sat beside me on the Steps. "YOu're not happy," he said. "Not at all happy, lady!" He was very old and very dirty. And health. And the joyous illusions of youth. "I guess Tni licked," I said. "Finished. Washed up.' Through." The old man listened, shaking his' head and working his toothless gums, When I was your age," he said, "I thought the same thing. It got so had with me, I wanted to die. I didn't find what I was 'coking for in the sky!" "Where did you find it?" I insisted. "I'm coming to that. . The old man paused and squinted into the sun. I thought, as I watched him, that in his youth he must have been a handsome man. I wondered where he come from, hew it was that he he had come to this pass: a tattered beggar peddling esoteric formulae. "There was a village," he went en. "I was glad to be there. Afraid of a striped cat that prowled in the grasses and with one blow of her great star-shaped paw bore them down and shredded them for her pleasure. . . "So I left that place, lady, and went to Sicily, to a city called Messina. "And there I found what I was looking for. . . A way to live and be content. A rule ,so simple, I can put it into a single sentence. And once I've spoken, it, you will never again be unhappy, or afraid, or alone. "Now I'll tell you why I am. . . You remember what happened, forty years ago, in Messina?" "An earthquake." "I was there, lady. I was a man of middle years, then. Strong. BROTHER SKRABANEK COULDN'T make the arrangements to go, as previously reported. My statement about Brother Skrabanek was made the night before we left Houston, but he had to cancel his plans the following morning. Our SPJST has only two delegates here. There are seven or eight more delegates from Texas', and we are very pleased for the warm reception that we received here at every turn. There is a good prospect that we may get the next convention of the National Fraternal Congress to be held in the Lem Star State.

he i a as e Secret of Power (By Charles B. Roth) He's one of those men to whom everything in life apparently comes easily. You know the type. Such men have money, prestige, power, friends. You wonder what strange secret they employ to make the entire world stand still and deliver to their bidding. There are a good many people who hold this friend of mine in awe because he is so wealthy and 'important. But don't. He is my friend, and he and I can chat as casually as any pair of friends. So the other day I discussed this secret of success with him, asking him to tell me frankly how it is that all his life the world has been so good to him. He was amused that I called , it a secret, for he pointed out that a secret is something which is withheld from all except a few. Unlike a true secret, his idea, he said, is so common that anyone should be able to grasp and use it. "All I do is show a benefit," he said. This was a little too cryptic for me, so I asked him to explain. "If you can show a man how he yy benefit by doing what you wish him. to do, whether it is to go to lunch or sign a ,contract for a $1,000,000 building," he went on, "it isn't hard to convice him. All of us, in whatever we do, seek benefits for ourselves. To convince a man and make him like and believe in you, show him a benefit. "Take the matter of winning friends. What have you to offer a friend, except the desire to be one? Will he find himself 'uncomfortable in your presence, because your attitude is wrong, or will you make him feel secure and comfortable? "When you have something to sell,, what benefit will your customer receive? He is looking for one. Show him you can give him what he wants and he will buy. "All my life I have thought in terms of benefits to the other person; It seems to me to be common sense to do this. It is, in fact, the only sensible thing to do." Science says the moon affects the tide. Lovers maintain it affects the untied. When some men discharge an obligation you. can hear the renert for hours. ) • 616 • ( The trouble with most of us is that our necessities are too luxurious and our luxuries are too necessary.

PREDICTIONS ABOUT THE FUTURE Many p eople like to make remarks or to speculate about the future. Fortunetellers make a business of it: Experts in all fields do a little fortunetelling — but they save science to back them up. Here are some p redictions the experts would put money on— and some they wisely discount. You'll have your own evidence for or against some of these predictions. The others—well, you'll just have to wait and see. Your descendants will be smarter than you. , False. People may be growing taller sod living longer but they're not getting any smarter. Forecasts for the future point to a distinct shortage of brain power and a lower average IQ. Dishes will be disposable. True. One of these days you may be using cheap but attractive dishes of soluble plastic that can be dissolved in the sink by superheated water, or turned in for rebate and reprocessing. Predictions are these will be so inexpensive (made fro oil soybeans, fruit pits, straw and wood pulp) that housewives will simply dispose of them in one way or another o ter meals. Houses will be lighted by paint or wallpaper. True. At least that's a definite possibility 'advanced by Westinghouse experts. Thy speculate electric lights may be replaced by highly efficient phospor powder mixed into building material, paint or wallpaper. These would absorb light energy during the day and emitp it at night. This would make life easy for refrigerators raiders, but tough on insomniacs. Old people will look younger. True. Beauty and scientific experts say new discoveries in diet, dermatology and health preservation will keep both men and women of the future remarkably well preserved even into 'old age. They claim it's highly probable that in another 50 years the signs' of aging will be so reduced that 70- and 80-year-olds will lobk about like today's 45•ers. People are growing larger. True. Even toc ay's small children will be generally taller than their parents. In the last century people have grown in height; stature and weight. Men are two inches and women more than one and one-fifth inches taller. Better nutrition and medical care are responsible. Industries foresee future theater seats, cars and even standard beds designed for longer legs. But we won't turn into a race of giants. This growth spurts will level off before that. Food capsules will replace meals.

False. People have been speculating about this for years but, happily, enough, a good many experts don't believe we'll ever come to it, We need more than two ounces of protein and about two thousand calories a day — too much to condense into one small pill. Then there's the question of necessary roughage. And last but not least, most of -us enjoy meals too much to take them in one gulp. And would you give pills to dinner guests? A home freezer will come with your new house. True. Speculations are that in another five . years pre-installed refrigerators, freezers. washing machines and dishwashers will be standard equipment in new houses in addition to the stove you get these days if you're lucky. The big advantage is that your kitchen will be designed as a unit and built neatly around these appliances for added convenience of use. You'll weigh more next September. True. Physiologists have found that's true of most people. Along . about September you'll probably think some of your clothes have shrunk. (And you're slimmer in the month of February.) You'll soon see people over the phone. False. Contrary to what you've read, don't expect this for a long time. The expense will be prohibitive for years. The Army Signal Corps recently showed how you could pick up a phone and see the person you're talking to, much as on a TV screen. But this gadget is only for urgent army use in case of war. Installed in your home it would cost between $5,000 and $10,000 — a high price for a telephonic glimpse of neighbors or butcher! Your car will have a phone. True. That's the pretty sure guess of radio and telephone experts. A lot of executives and commercial companies already have these sets but they haven't reached popular prices. The helicopter will soon become a family plane. False. Helicopters currently cost around $25,000 and it will be a long day before they drop to popular prices. As for general family use: by 1960 the helicopter will be about where the automobile was in 1900, some experts claim. We'll cross the continent in an hour True. Or at least it will be possible, claims Dr. Irving Langmuir, General Electric's famous physiscist-chemist. He envisions travel by vacuum tunnel or tube, in an airtight vehicle, magnetically suspended and electronically con. trolled. The vehicle could go about

5,000 miles per hour and you could zip from New York to the west -coast during lunchtime. Such a method would have advantages, over air travel: it would do away with weather hazards, while friction and air resistance which slow up travel today — would be just about nil. But there's disadvantage to this method of travel — we won't be able to relax and enjoy the scenery. )•4•(

Just a few more days now and you will be seeing our hilarious comedy `She's My Daisy" which we will present to you on the 5th of October at 4 p. m. We have an excellent cast and they will all do their best to put on a good performance for you. Iii September we celebrated the birthdays of Birdie Hilsher and Betty Elshick. It had rained the day , before our Birthday Club was supposed to meeet, so we had to celebrate at the lodge instead of at Mrs. Zimmerman's ho use. It looks like everyone has a birthday in October — I know there will be gifts galore. There are eight celebrants: Rosie Hanus, Janie Dvorak, Frances Olexa, Rosie Zimerman, Frances Kadlecek, Marie Temple, Maxine Stavinoha and Annie Vala. Here's hoping that they all have a wonderful birthday. Harriette Earl ) • 4 HVEZDA TEXASU LODGE NO 47

Dear Friends: Just a few lines to let all of the members of our lodge know that in our next meeting, which will be held on October 5, we are going to discuss our lodge officers' salaries for the 1953 year. All members who are interested should try to be present to vote on this decision. Sister Evelyn and brother Bill Brtis transferred from Buckholts into our lodge. We welcome them and invite them to attend all the meetings. They are good community workers. Brother John Coufal, Jr. resigned as chairman of the auditing committe. Our president, Frank V. LETTERS SAN ANTONIO LODGE NO. 133 Brothers and Sisters: - - When one least expects something nice, it happens. It happened at our last meeting when extra chairs had to be brought in to seat all present. A nice turn cut like that is something like the musicians feel when ball room is filled. They feel more like playing. And the officers feel mere like working. The nearness of fall may have been the reason or that most of them did not know that the chairman's birthday came during this month. The social was fine wi';h the table covered with all those goodies, like a lemon pie, cookies, poppy lailaches, fruit kolaches, sandwiches and coffee. Un-! urn! Nuff sed. In the course of the lodge business bro. Kleprlik brought up the subject of sick benefit Insurance and explained the dif ferent classes the members alone can' benefit by. It is hoped that those not having this' insurance at present will get in touch with him soon. From the former meeting the case of the unfinished business came up regarding whether or not we should have a keg of beer at the next meeting. It is said that silence is golden and by that token the brew was voted to tap, for you see, it is also golden. But according to 'Cr u bylaws silence means nil. After go-' ing home, that evening I stretched out on my lawn chair thinking of the harmonious meeting and the sociability of the, members and I felt contented. Again the chairman saw before him the fine turn-out, the business of the meeting and the business •cf the suds. I heard him say, "sisters and brothers it is up to the membership of the lodge to, decide whether or not you wish to have this golden refreshment at our next meeting. Has any one any cornMent,, or motion?" One could hear a pin dropsand a cough dropped. Silence! The he continued; "sisters and broth ers do you agree that the votes on both sides are the same and even? "Yes.!" chorused the audience. „, "Then I take it that you know the decidingvote in a tie is cast by the chairman?" Again the answer was "yes!" "Veil . then I decide it by having a keg Of .beer following our next meeting. There!" resounded from the "136o-0o-coo!' audience. I jumped out 'of my chair as if I was shot, only to recognize Patsy who had slipped up behind me and hollered "boo." You see I had fallen asleep and it was just a dream.

Era ternaLy, Sylvester Bundil IIVEZDA.SVORODY LODGE NO. 87 Temple, Texas. Dear Brothers and Sisters: Here it is almost the end of September. Autumn has finally arrived and with it blessed relief from that almost unbearable Summer heat. Although the moisture is still lacking, we can at least be thankful for the cooler weather. September, to many of us is one of the busiest months of the year. Time for children to start back to their respective schools and colleges. For P-TA officers and committees to outline their years program and activities. The same is true of many ether clubs and organiza.ticns. HOwever, September is also Fair time in Temple. Even though the doors have been closed on this year's Fair, the memory still lingers on. To me one of the most outstanding events of the Cen-Tex Fair is the parade on opening day. Especially grand in performance is the jeep—Mounted First Armored division band of Ft. Hood. This year the parading column included two Military bands, eight high school bands,

Has there even occured in the lives of you readers a void that seemingly cannot be filled Such an occasion has been experienced in the household of ycurs truly, recently. And is being repeated in thousands of hoMes through out the Nation. For the first time in almost 18 years, our first born, daughter, Carolyn, ceased to be under our constant care and supervision. On Sept.. 14 we took her to Huntsville, where she enrolled in Sam Houston State Teachers College as a freshmen, Home Economics major. It is indeed with a feeling of mixed emotions we parents leave our youngsters on 'their own, for the first time. And yet we are truly thankful and proud to have them continue on with their education. President Stanley Kacir presided at cur regular monthly meeting, which' was held on Sept. 15. A letter of notification of the death of one of our old members Mrs. Louise Mueller was read. She passed away at her home in Luling on Sept. 4th. From what I was able to gather at the meeting, Mrs. Mueller served as sort of a foster mother to some of our lodge members many, many years ago. May God rest her soul in peace and may the members of her family accept our sincere sympathy. Five new members were accepted into our lodge, all into the adult department. They are: Henry F. Blum, Clyde Adams, Eastes Pearl Spurlin, John J. Dukatnik and Jarrard Secrest. Bro. Secrest has recently been elected State Senator, to represent the new Central Texas district We are proud indeed to have him as a new member. And incidentally Reuben D. Talasek, who was elected as:Representative, Place 2 Bell County, in the primary electicn in July is also a member of our lodge. To bro. Kacir we wish better luck if he choose's to run for County Attorney again. After the meeting was adjourned a period of recreation followed. The lodge sisters served sandwiches and cold drinks to approximately 25 members. Once again we say, "many thanks" to those of you who helped furnish the refreshments. THE LIFE IS IN THE BLOOD So repeatedly stated Moses more than 3,400 years ago. Without benefit of any of the advantages of modren science he uttered a profound truth that has never been and never will be disproved. On the contrary, the more modern science learns about the marvelous mechanism of our bodies, the more it appreciates that those words of Moses are indeed true. Yes, press reports even tell us of scientists who are making a study of the blood with the hope of finding the secret of life. Blood is found everywhere in the human body; in the heart, in the arteries and veins, in the thousands of miles of tiny capillaries. It forms the lymph which bathes all the cells of the body. Without it no tissue could exist. It supplies all the various organs of the body with the chemicals they need to do their work, and these in turn hand over to it the results of their activity, their secretions as well as their waste products. So by means of the blood one works for all and all work for one. It is the great unifier of the human organism. The widespread use of blood products and the practice of blood transfusion have focused attention on this vital fluid, our stream of life. It is therefore most timely to give some thought to the blood, what its functions are, of what it is composed, and how it does its work. The prime purpose of blood is to serve the cause of metabolism. Metabolism literally means change, the change that occurs in all living substances, consisting of the constructive changes of nutrition and repair known as anabolism, and the destructive .or waste-producing changes known as katobolism. To carry out its nutritional function the blood obtains rich foodstuffs from 3 distinct sources: (1) From the lungs it obtains oxygen. This is a most important function, as cells are unable to store up oxygen and therefore without a continous supply life could exist but for a few minutes. (2) From the digestive system the blood obtains proteins, the sugars (glucose), the fats, the salts, etc., that the cells need for the production of energy and for their repair and replacement. (3) From the various ductless glands the blood obtains certain valuable elements which aid the body in its various functions; such as the insulin of the pancreas, which aids in the' digestion of the carbohydrates (sugars and starches); the adrenalin of the adrenal glands;' and the hormones of the sex glands. The other part of metabolism in which the blood is active is hardly less important. The cells of the body produce poi-

sons so fast •that unless these are continually carried away the cells would soon poison themselves. In fact, experiments have shown that a piece of tissue severed from the body requires a solution of 2,000 times its own bulk to avoid this self-poisoning. This waste consists of carbon dioide, which is carried to the lungs and there disposed of, and the end products of protein metabolism, such as urea and uric acid, which are eliminated by the liver, kidneys and the skin. A third function of the blood is to keep the body at a uniform temperature. When this rises the blood rushes to the surface, thus cooling itself as well as getting rid of moisture. When the temperature drops the blood rushes to the vital organs, thus conserving the 'heat and helping them to do the extra work required to keep the body at its normal temperature. A fourth function of the blood is to supply the body with the secretions of the glands that act as regulator, such as the tyro in of the thyroid gland. This secretion acts as a regulator of the oxidation process of the cells, thereby controlling the heat-producing machinery of the body. For this reason it is said that the thyroid gland controls the basal metabolism. A fifth function of the blood is to protect the body from the enemies that would and also invade it and to act as repair medium in the case of injury. This it does by means of the white corpuscles and other elements, such as the protein gloubules known as antidotes, on which is based the use of penicillin, and which figure in immunity to disease. And sixth, the blood works continuously to keep itself on the alkali side of reaction. Though carrying away all the acid waste of the myriads upon myriads of cells it feeds,- it never permits itself to lose its slightly alkaline balance; to do so would mean death to the body. It keeps this chemical blance or reaction by means of certain elements in the blood which act as neutralizers, or, better stated, as buffers, which prevent , the acids from accumulating in the blood and thereby causing it to become more acid than alkaline. Among such elements in the blood that serve this purpose are the phosphates, carbonic acid, etc. The blood has its cells, the red and white corpuscles, and platelets, which are imbedded in a liquid stroma or mesh or framework, the plasma. It is a liquid or moving tissue in contrast to the rest of the tissues of the body, which are more or less stable. How much blood does an individual

have? According to the more recent estimates, our blood accounts for about nine percent of our weight. It is 55-percent liquid and has a specific gravity of 1.05 or 1.06, meaning that it is about 1/20 heavier than water, and five to six times as thick. Blood is composed of four main parts: the red corpuscles or erythrocytes (which simply means red cells), and which account for its red color; the white cells or leucocytes (literary, white cells); the platelets, tiny platelike objects of irregular shape; and the blood plasma. How many red corpuscles do we have and how large are they? In a man's blood we find about five million and in a woman's blood about four and a half million per cubic millimeter (1/25 of an inch). The total varies from 25 to 40 trillion (one trillion being a thousand billion). They are like tiny discs, round and flat, with a depression in the center. 'They average about one three-thousandths of an inch in diameter and are about Onefourth as thick. They consist of liquid sacs that act as a mesh or stroma for the hemoglobin. The hemoglobin content of these is very definite and uniform in time of health. The red corpuscles are formed in the red marrow of the bones. They have .a nucleus as they grow, but as they enter the blood stream they leave it behind. So, once having entered the blood stream they no longer grow. Their life-span is from 30 to 60 days. And then what?' When: old and worn out they land in the Olen, That ductless gland salvages the' iron and sends it on to the liver. The liver 'in turn supplies it to the red marrow 'as that red cell factory needs it. The production and destruction of these cells in normal healthy conditions keep pace with each other so that the blood is not only well supplied with oX3)gen carriers but there is always a goodly reserve available in case of emergency. The turnover of red corpuscles haS'been estimated at one trillion a day; 'which means that every second, yes, every 'Second of our lives from 11 to 12 Million leave the marrow of our bones and enter the blood stream, and also that that many are taken out of circulation every second. And we are assured that Our blood manufacturing facilities are not at all taxed by this prodigious production but that it can be stepped up at any time conditions require, such as loss of blood due to hemorrhage, accident, or the ranif ied air of higher elevations. The main job of these red cells is tO supply the cells of the body with the oxygen they need, and the hemoglobin or iron and protein in them acts as the car-

rier for the oxygen. Concerning this process, A. Carrell, in his book Man the Unknown, says: "The method of Oxygen tramnortation through the human body is one of life's fundamental mysteries.. Iron containing red blood pigment, named heme, functioning through a protein complex, hemoglobin, alone knows the secret of how to transport oxygen in a reversible process, in which it first picks it up and then releases it all alongthe assembly line of living bodies as it eiruclates through the body. It is in this manner that the fires of life are kept' burning' In contrast to the red corpuscles, the white cells or leucocytes, are living organ isms. They number about one to every 6 or 7 hundred red corpuscles for a total around 40 billion. They originate in the En-II-row of the bones, lymph glands and een. They all have nucleuses and may well be likened to the amoebae, tiny onecelled parasites that are to be found in all Irr sh waters. Like these amoebae, the a lin e y ells are able to move about Under their o sei power and to ingest sub 51 au ces. neither of which the red cells can do. Most numerous of the five varieties usually found in the blood are the pelymorphonuclear (so named because of the varied forms of their nucleases), which constitute some 70 percent of the total. Next most numerous are the lymphocytes, which resemble the lymph cells and account for about 20 percent*; the gient monocytes (one-celled) number only to 8 percent of the total; whereas the cosinophiles and the ba.sophiles at best total 2 percent of the leucocyte population of the blood. These various leucocytes have been likened [o worms, fish and octopuses that act as scavengers in the river of blood, cud like beavers capable of building and repairing. They seem to know where they are needed, and they will elongate themselves and go right through the walls'of, the capillaries to get to the point of infection or injury. The accumulation of pus we see at a point of infection is just so many white cells that have died doing injury they their duty. At a place of mjiny transform themselves into tissue cells .:od become part of the permanent tissue. thereby aiding in the healing of the , wound. Thus we see that the leucocytes serve at once as defense and attacking unit. and as doconuammation and re,^lon battalions. m platelets are little bodies of irregi -,nape, without color or nucleuses, irat e ee 1 eund at the rate of about one 0 every eighteen red corpuscles. Zadne z ni kapat prtizraena at'ava sladke chuti. Cukr se sluduje s jinymi latkami, nachazejicimi se v rostline, a vytvati slaite bilkoviny. Krome uhliku, vodiku a kysliku obsahuji jests dusik, siru a nekdy fosfor. V podstate se z techto sloLtYch bilkovin skladaji hlavni easti buriky — protoplasme a jadro. Semena hrachu, fazoli, eneky a jinych rostlin maji bilkoviny mnohem jednoduaai sestavy. Je tudi2 jasno, jakou filohu maji listy rostlin. Jsou zylaatni laboratoti, kde se tvoti cukr, akrob a bilkoviny. Na praci iistu zavisi nahromadeni 2ivnYch latek v plodech, kotenech a hlizach. Tyto latky jsou take latkarni, pottebnYmi k dYchani. Vidime tedy, ze v rostline probihaji dva

VESTNIK— WEST, TEXAS procesy: pohleovani kyslieniku uhlieiteho ze vzduchu a dYchani. Pohlcovani kysliOniku uhliditeho rostlinami probiha behem dne daleko silneji nez dYchani. Zelene listovi rostlin ma v sobs prfnerne 80% vody. Listovi ma v celku velkY povrch, pokrytY poko gkou, s malYmi otvory prfiduchy. Takove listy vidime u zeli, gita. V listech se pohyb vody ponekud zmirni, nebot' voda musi postupovat z buriky do buriky prosakovanim buneenou blanou (osmoticke prolinani) Povrchove bufiky listii stale ztra, ceji oast vody vypatovanim a nassavaji vodu . z bunek, lehloubeji v listech. V nich take vznika ssaci sila vzhledem k bunkam leEcim jests Krome toho v kotenech rostlin nastava t. zv. vztlak kotentl. Jim nastava nejen ptoste vsakovani vody do kotehtl, nYbrZ voda je tlakem puzena do vYaky. Z vetvieky bude kapat at'ava. V to dobe strom jests nema listy a proto

Strana 27, nenastava. vypatovani. 8' t'ava mohla vystoupiti do takove vY ge jen vztlakem kotent. Aby rostlina nezvadla, musi nassat tolik vody, kolik se j i vypatilo. OkurkY, rajska jablieka a pile rostliny s velkYm povrchem listfi, ke konci horkeho dne 6byeejne sve guji sve listy, nebot' ztrata vody v nich je yetai ne2 pkijeni. Sta & . je zalit a rano jsou opet sve21. Nedostanou-li rostliny pottebnou vodu yeas, hynou. Vypatovanim nastava ochlazeni povrchu listU. Kdyby nebylo vypatovani, rostliny by se na slunci spalily. Vime, ze rostliny i v horkem eervencovem dni maji chladnY povrch listu. Ve skieniku nasledkem nasycenl vzduchu vodnimi parami nenastane vypatovani, a pak dojde ke spaleni iistu. Voda vstupuje do protoplasmy, do jddra a do buneene S • t'avy. Kdyg jim vodu odejmeme, ztraceji svou vegetativni schopnosti. Proto pti dlouhotrvajlcich suchach nastava hynuti rostlin. Vody je take tteba k vytvoteni cukru, akrobu, tuku a jinych latek. Potteba vody k tomuto neelu neni yaak velika. S vodou zaroveti postupuji rostlinou mineralni soli. Z nich pottebuje rostlina slou'eeniny dusiku, drasliku, -vapniku, Zeleza, hoteiku, fosforu a siry. • 41 • (
