Nepomohly moje dfivocly a argumenty. Serpan trval na tom, ze to .dechno jsou pouze dohady. Dokonce ptipomenul: "Mate tam th, ei etyti krajanske organisace, z nichZ SPJST je nervetk. A SPJST nema vice neZ 15,000 elentl (v rote 1937). Ostatni vase organisace nemaji dohromady ani tolik. To by sotva jeden z dvanacti byl elenem va gich spolkti. To je nemyslitelne. Dokud nekdo z vakch profesoril, storikil nebo sociologfi, neprovede pattia-

PokaZde vzpomenu si slov zesnuleho Stanislava 8erpana, "dokud nekdo z vakch profesorfi, historikil nebo neprovede pattiene Aetkeni, nebudete miti Cislic fakticky dokazanYch." Sto a jeden rok jiz uplynu4o od toho dne, kdy nekolik rodin, vedenYch Josefern Lidumilem Le gikarem, ptibylo do Cat Springu ku krajanu Horakovi, kterY mezi tamnejkmi Nemci byl znain pod jmenem Berger. Byli to prvni Ceti ptistehovalci, kteki dolarovolne zkeldi se sveho poddanstvi a vypovedeli poslu'Snost tehdy 201etemu cisati rakouskernu FrantiSku Josefovi Prvnimu. A Franta Josef panoval taktka sedmdesat rokt. Statisiee deskYch sedlakft, domkat*, delnikfi a nadenikfl pkestalo uznavati Frantu Prochazku za sveho panovnika. Desitky Lekkart, Sileru, Markft, Marekla jinYch usadilo se na roZlehlYch planich Texastr. OdeSel Frant gek Josef Prvni a odeAel i Karel Posledni, a nasi ptistehovalci stale pfichazeli. JenZe nikdo je nepoeital. Nikdo, krome , paroplavebnich spolednosti, ktere vSak poditaly
pouze lodni listky, a pak pkistehovalecke fitady, kde nak krajan y byli zapisovani jako Austrijaci, Raktiane. Ta kletba rodu habsburskeho sla s krajany aZ do americkYch pkistavil.

MUSINGS OF THE EDITOR PERMIT ME TO HAVE a few words with our local 'organizers. I should like to get them realize the importance of knowing some additional points about the fraternal insurance. By way of apology, let me admit that the thoughts presented in the following paragraphs are not my cwn. I came to " get the material accidentally. When in Boston, I was in my room at the Sheraton Plaza Hotel, pounding my typewriter and preparing material for the next issue of the Vestnik. A group of people commenced to talk and laugh in the hall just 'outside my room. The talking and laughing went on for some time. I recognized among the voices two of my new acquaintances. I couldn't write, couldn't concentrate, so I picked up my coat and opened the door. Thus I was introduced to the whole group. One of them gave me his business card. I recognized him as one of the speakers before the Fraternal Field Managers Ascsociation. It gave me an opportunity to get a copy of his address.
only by this procedure his fraternal society was able to write over 58 million of new business in 1951. That, incidentally, is twice as much as we have written since the SPJST was organized fifty-five yeari ago. •
THE TROUBLE WITH MOST fraternal solicitors, he continued in his talk, is that they want to commercialize the life insurance and just sell it on rates, net cost, etc., the same as the commercial companies. The fraternal solicitor, by following this method, is missing. the boat. The fraternal salesman does not take advantage of all the other features the fraternal societies have that the socalled Old Line Companies do not have and would be happy if they did. Every fraternal society has something to be proud of—that they are maintaining homes for the aged, tubercular sanatoriums, supporting their needed members, making endowments for educations, etc., a beautiful picture can be built showing that it doesn't cost the policyholder anything because the saving in premium HIS TALK WAS SOMETHING which taxes goes to do this work. ♦ ♦ should have been heard by every one of our SPJST solicitors. He stated that the THE SPEAKER REFERRED to his own most difficult obstacle to overcome in training a new man in the life insurance society and explained how its solicitors business is to get him into production as do it. In order to do the right job, he soon as humanly possible. The new said, and make it easy for the new solisolicitor must have money to pay for citor to present the right picture, he food, for clothing, for shelter for his must have a track to run on, a track family, and he can't wait weeks to get that he can't get off and one that will it. He will buy it and to be done. He expressed the belief that you will not have to force him to do so.
THEN A NEW IDEA has taken hold' of the solicitors 'of our society. Instead of only telling the prospect the story of our society, we now show them print. We have a new illustrated Pa1:1:1phlet giving the pictures, a chart shoW7, ing our growth, listing all our benevolent activities, showing our field opera-, tion with amount of insurance by states, pictures of all the students who received, scholarship awards in the past yeai from ,our society, a picture of some of the churches we have financed through. mortgage loans. IT IS MUCH EASIER to present facts through the eye. We buy 90% by what we see. So our approach is through:the, eye rather than through the ear. We, try to make our insurance talks as ;simple to understand as possible and not, be, confusing the prospect with a Jot of, figures and settlement options that-he, can't understand. We do not talk about premiums, policy reserves, automatic loans, or extended insurance. All, we ; telp our prospects is how much he has tn, pay each year and what that amount; would do for him in the way of protecif, tion or income for old age; what world the family get if the applicant was taken out of the picture; and what would, happen if ' he couldn't pay after a fewyears and had to quit. We present the simple talk which answers all of tpese points and is easily understood. • IF A 1, I'? TERNAL SOCIETY wishes' to go further and really build a firie.presentation, the greatest asset they have is that they can't go broke or go into the hands of a receiver because wee.- are: blessed with the "open contract", We have everything, to safeguard . the policyholder that any commercial, company has. Then the policyholders, are also safeguarded by the restrictions of the fraternal plan which ,e*-r. penses to the amounts provided for this. purpose. Under the guarantee clause the Society and the policyholders are both. protected. This clause simply provides that if for any reason the assets , are not equal to the full amount of the bilities, the difference is to be appoy:: (Continued on page 23.)

WILL YOU HELP YOUR EDITOR As a rule, the majority of our members get the Vestnik on Thursday. They read it, they notice some of the articles . or letters, and they wish to make their own comments. They usually read the current issue and 'then they send their contribution for publicantion. Quite frequently, some of the letters arrive on Saturday. Others are delivered on Monday. Those late contributions are the biggest headaches. Let us see if we can explain why. •The printing office, where the Vestnik is being published, has to have its routine. It has to be that way for a Smooth functioning. The linotype operators start setting the type for the Vestnik en Thursday. They have three days to do it, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. 'Yeti can break your baby-feeding schedUle and get by, • but you can't fool those machines and the men who operate them. The manuscripts, articles, editorials, and reports mustbe there on time. Friday afternoon, and again Saturday afternoon, a trial print is made from the type already set, and mailed to the editor • forcxamination and correction. The editor takes the "proof sheets", spreads 'then' on his desk, and, with a pencil in hand, he reads the "proofs," letter by letter, , word by word, line by line. It takes him from six to eight hours to read the entire issue. He mails it back to the printing office. Monday is the day for the operators in the printing office to make the corrections which the editor found in the "proofs." If an y additional
material comes to the printing office on Monday, and if the time and space permits, the late matter is set in type, corrected by someone in the printing office, and is made ready for the current issue How about the letters which the editor gets on Saturday? Isn't it time to set them Monday, hardly, except the short letter or two, with another disadvantage. The editor does not get to read the "proof", and this editorial responsibility has to be done by someone else. It is the unloading of the editor's duties on another person which should be avoided. For nearly four years, a notice appeared in every issue of the Vestnik that everything intended for publication must be in the hands of editor a week before the date of issue. That notice was placed there after a very careful consideration not to cause any hardship to all concerned, including members, typesetters, editor, and printer. This is the rule which all of us should remember: the typesetter must get your letters through the hands of editor not later than Saturday morning; editor gets the same letter—already set in type— either Saturday night or Sunday morning. Or Put it another way: the final hour for the editor to send your letter to the printing office is at 5:00 Friday afternoon. Would you kindly see to it that your contributions are in the hands of editor not later than Friday? He wants to read the "proofs" of your letter set in type on Saturday or Sunday. Many thanks for your co-operation.
SEVEN GOALS IN LIFE Talk to fifty people you know. Ask filch the same question: "What is your • 'Oal in life?" You will get fifty answers, but I will wager that not more than two or three of your fifty friends will have a clear-cut idea of what his goal is. The others will tell you they want retirenient and ease, or a Million dollars; or • a trip around the world, or to see their 'Children married off, or to serve others. But not many will be able to describe a specific goal toward which they are !Nmrking. Yet without a goal you are going to be cheated out of most of the fun of working, because if you do not know what you are working toward you won't have the satisfaction of recognizing it when you attain it, don't you see? Recently a psychologist outlined a Seven•point goal that he believes everyone should have, regardless of what
his specific aim in life is. The first goal should be to win friendS. Without friends all other goals are futile. Second goal should be greater knowledge of and skill in handling others, in order to gain out of life what you want. Third goal: success at work. There is a peculiar satisfaction in doing a good job which makes this goal one of the most important of all. The fourth is happiness. That is evasive, and perhaps no one can tell what happiness is, how it is to be attained. But it is worth working for. The fifth goal is' self-management. The sixth goal, he says, is the acquisition of good mental habits, and that certainly is worth while in living a satisfactory , life. The final goal is helpful citizenship. If you can integrate these with your individual goal, you can be pretty sure of living a richer, better life.

Calorie Counting Made Easier When you start reducing, you'll do yourself a big psychological favor if you stress what you can eat rather that what you can't. Too many people begin a diet with the dour belief that they're in for a period of grim, tasteless eating. That's by no means true, since dozens of foods you like and ordinarily eat are recommended fare for trimming off pounds. As soon as you realize this, and see how many good foods are also good easier. Just note the variety and taste for you, you'll find calorie counting much appeal of the following basic foods for weight watchers: Fruits: Apples, apricots, blackberries, cantaloupe and other melonS, currants, grapefruit, oranges, peaches, pears, pine-. ,rums, rasperries, strawberries, tangerines. These may be eaten raw or cooked, without sugar or cream. Stick to unsweetened and water-packed canned fruit; tart quick-frozen fruit, small quantities only of dried fruit. Milk: Skim or buttermilk; dried skim milk powder. Vegetables: Asparagus, green beans, beets and their greens, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, Swiss chard, collards, Cucumber, dandelion greens, eggplant, kale, kohlrabi, lettuse of all kinds mushrooms, okra, onions, parsley, green and red peppers, white potatoes (can be used sparingly except on strict diet), radishes, spinach, squash, tomatoes, turnips and their greens, water cress. Eat these raw or cooked, without butter. Meat, fish, and fowl: Any lean portion or variety, cooked without added fat. Avoid gravies, stuffings, rich sauces, creamed dishes. Eggs: Any kind prepared without fat or sauces. OUR NEIGHBOR MEXICO One of the generals who helped in the execution of Maximilian was Porfirio Diaz. After death of Juarez, July 18, 1872, Diaz organized his own revolution and made himeelf dictator of Mexico. The thirty-five years during which Diaz ruled Mexico, from 1875 to 1910, were years of enterprise. Statistically, this was the most progressive period in Mexican history. Eiumanly, it was a calamity. It threw Mexico back into an irresponsible autocracy. The haciendas were not broken up. The rulling class accumulated more land, the best land. Greedy individualism was thriving unrestrained. A handful of politicians, generals, and hacendados were doing very nicely. They had almost unlimited power over the lives and destinies of the Indians. The rich grew richer, the poor poorer. In 1910 Diaz invited the best people to celebrate, on September 16, the Great Centenial of Father Hidalgo's El Grito de Dolores. At the expense of twenty million pesos' worth of decorations, banquets, fireworks, the aristocracy drank carloads of champagne, danced and and sang, the women displayed jewels and fine dresses. Nobody seemed to pay attention to the angry voices in huts wherepeones slept on petates, to the shouts of a rude storekeeper named Pascual Orozco, better known to history as Pancho Villa. No one noticed down in the state of Morelos a little fighting-cock of a man named Emiliano Zapata who was exciting the Indians. Nobody seemed to hear the angry word 'Revolucion"; "Tierra y Liberdad"; and "Death to the Hacendados". — A few months later Porfirio Diaz, the octogenerian president of Mexico, fled to France. The revolution or 1910 is usually referred to in Mexico as THE Revolution with a capital "R". However, it did not begin with the overthrow of Diaz. It began one hundred years earlier with Hidalgo. It was continued by Benito Juarez. From Father Hidalgo's call to the flight of Diaz was one century. It was a century of social upheavals, a century of hell. The revolution of 1910 was the fulfillment of Hidalgo's dream, was a real revolution in its aims as well as in its results. MEXICAN REFORMS SINCE 1910 It is best to think of the Mexican revolution of 1910 as a movement made up of a series of waves conceived in confusion and executed — or prosecuted — in disorder. Most of the actions seemed to have independent beginnings and inde• pendent objectives. There have been so many cross currents that it is most diffi-

If the revolution has accomplished nothing else, it at least has one great achievement to its credit: it has revived hope; it has strengthened faith; it has given men something to work for and towards — in a word, it has reintroduced the'future into 'Mexican existence. Yes, the reform of Mexican education has injected into the national life one of its most important dimensions: the future. MEXICO IS .LOOKING FORWARD' It would be fOolish to make definite conclusions. It shoud be clear that the status of a man living all his life as a serf cannot be transformed suddenly by telling him to walk as a free man. It takes time. The vast programs of social and economic reform are still aspirations. It is true that Mexico is showing an increased national consciousness, showing some progress in the direction of political unity. Mexicans are not blind to the difficulties of . economic improvements like railroads, highways, arid communication • lines to bind the isolated regions. They know' the failues as - well as the successes in their agrarian program. The new Administration, under Mexico's new President, Miguel Aleman, is concentrating on building up Mexico's economy. After year of domination by army generals who were active in the revolutions, Mexico finally has an administration compoSed of civilians, President Aleinan is an attorney. He never has had a military title. Most of his official fainily are civilians, scholars, technicians, businessmen. The new President announced last December hiS economic program with two top-place objectives: increase of food production and industrial expansion. Aim of his program is 'to raise standards of living and to make Mtxieo independent of import of staple foods. Formerly Mexico was almost self-sufficient in food, but • now the country has to import considerable quantities for her growing population. The new administration is getting under way a $300 million program to increase the irrigated land by nearly 150%. The irrigation projects are planned for the Papaloapan River, in Vera Cruz; the Sinaloa and Fuerte rivers, in Sinaloa; Yaqui River, in Sonora; and Tehuantepec River, in Oaxaca. Areas to be watered by these irrigation projects will be 2,700,000 acres. Power facilities will be installed whenever feasible. But power production will be subordinate to the main purpose — irrigation. Power to be generated will be used primarily for agricultural purposes, but some of it will be made available for commercial purposes. Engineers estimate

that the new generators will have a capacity of 200,000 kilowatts, thus increasing the hydro-electric capacity of Mexico by 50%. Aleman promised to make irrigation one of the outstanding items of the national budget. Under the increase area of irrigation, plus modernization of farming methods, it is estimated to increase food production by 80%. President Aleman hopes to see the program completed when his term expires in 1952.

Being able to get together with other fraternal societies working with them, exchanging points of view and meeting new friends is wonderful as there are places in this world where such priviledges clo not exist. Make your plans now to attend this program on Monday night, Octobe:- 27 at 7:30 p. m. at Pokrok Dallas 84, 2625 Floyd Street, Dallas, Texas. See you there, Sis A. M. Vrla •)• •( You can't make a good hand out of a heel.
