POMAHEJNIE. Nektefi elenove ani nevedi, Ze Nemocenskk odbor mame. Vysvetlil tenkrat bratr toupal, ae u kadu, jehoz fa.dovi fatednici by nechteli praci s Nemocenskkrn odborern konati, elOnave, ktefi ktefi by meli zajem o nemocenskou podporb a chteli pouZivati vkhod, zvolil by si
At' elenoye plati vice, aby dostali vice. Nasledovne byly zavedeny etyfi tfidy. V kakle tfide udeluje se podpora dvanactkrate vet gi nei co obnagi rodni poplatek. NejdraMi tfida ma poplatek $3.00 etvrtletne, $12.00 rodne, a poskytuje nemocenskou podporu v obnosu $144.00. Tyto etyfi tkidy jsou rozdeleny dle ureiteho stari. Ve bide "A" se stall neumduje. Tfida "B" je pro eleny do 60 let, tfida "C" do 55 let, tfida "D" do 50 let. Nejvice Menu mame ye tilde "A". To znamene., 2e tfidy B, C, a D nejsou dostateene, nejsou sobestaene. Jinkmi slovy, ten, kdo plati nejmene, musi svym malkm poplatkem pfispivati k vyplaceni podpory tomu, kdo here vice. A protok fondy pro jednotlive tfidy nemohou se vesti samostatne a vyZadovalo by to ptikomplikovane Uttovani, sto Menu. tfidy "A" stale doplaci na jedenact Menu v tfidach "B", "C" a"D", kde podpory jsou dvojnasobne, trojnasobne a etyknasobne. Je dvoji vkchodisko: (1) zru git podpory, ktere jsou dvakrat, tfikrat a etkfikrat vetgi; nebo (2) ziskati dosti dalgich aby vyggi t •idy mely vetgi pfijmy, aby byly sobestaene, aby stati chudaci
JINITCH nemuseli yydrtovat mlade bohdee. Bud' by men vgichni platiti stejne, nth() museji dratgi tfidy ziskavati vice Mena do svkch vetgich vkhod. Vgeho vgudy jeden Men, kterk poslal svuj poplatek za tfi etvrtleti, a pak i on ztratil zajem. Druhk nejvet gi fad Jednoty, Praha eislo 29, ma ye bide "A" atyri eleny ye tilde "B" jednoho a ye tilde "C" tez jednoho ,celkem lest Mentz. Dokud byl bratr Jaroslav Janieek 'M y, °bees pfipomenul v fadove schilzi, aby si bratfi a sestry zaplatill do Nemocenskeho odboru. Platil jsem take. Doplatil jSelll a pfestal. V roku 1949 zaplatili jsme $8.64, a dva dostali podporu v sume $48. Dnes fad 88 nema ani jecinoho sveho Mena v Nemocenskem odboru. Dejte sve nahledy.

MUSINGS OF THE EDITOR ONE OF THE SPEAKERS at the National Fraternal Congress delivered an interesting address the subject of which was "Anticipated Future of Fraternal Societies." The speaker, in his opening remarks stated that the fraternal organizers, district managers and state organizers were the keynote of fraternalism. Without the organizers, without their work of securing new members there would be no fraternal system. Many people do not understant the fraternal insurance and it takes the organizers to point out the distinguishing features of the fraternal insurance, to make the people realize that the fraternal societies have much more to offer than the commercial companies. • • AS YOUR EDITOR WAS listening to this talk, his thoughts drifted back to the scenes of one of the first meetings that the Supreme Lodge had with our new organizers. The meeting was held in one of the downtown hotels in Houston. I recalled that one of the speakers at the Meeting was the late Brother August Morris. Then there was also a well-known insurance man in Houston, and a bondman who used to sell us his gilt-edged securities. That was exactly twenty-three years ago. EDUCATION OF MEN AND WOMEN who sell fraternal insurance is relatively recent. Twenty-three years ago, our organizers received no training. We may truthfully say that 95% of our organizers did not receive any definite instructions regarding fraternal insurance, what it is, what advantages it has, and how to present it to the prospect. We are just beginning to offer our local organizers the Fraternal sales training courses. We need to ttain our organizers. They need. to know that the fraternal system has much more to offer than the commercial companies. They need to know the fundamental difference between a "policy" and a "certificate." Our members don't know it, but our organizers should know it. And when our organizers learn the difference, maybe our cfficers will gradually learn it, too. • • THE INSURANCE POLICY is only a contract, a closed contract. The certifi-
cate is much more. It is a certificate of membership in an organization like our SPJST—a stock certificate—a certificate of ownership. We are all stockholders in each of. our societies. We are all stockholders in our lodge halls—or should be. All we need right now is to sit down and study our own business. We don't have to worry about the other fellow, about the commercial companies. We are cur own competitors. in a brotherly rivalry. • • OUR ORGANIZERS SHOULD learn a good deal more about this "open contract" business. There is real envy among the commercial companies that we do have our "open contract" and they don't. As one chief executive of one of the commercial companies stated: "We commercials would give much to adopt it. Why don't you fraternals shout about it from the housetops?" This executive also stated that the lodge system is the greatest influential factor of the fraternals that many executives of the commercial life insurance companies would give much to be able to get their policyholders together in groups so that they could sit down with them and discuss all kinds of things like one, big family. ♦ • OUR ORGANIZERS SHOULD be proud that they have the privilege to sell life insurance. At present, we don't sell any large amounts of insurance to an individual. No one will buy $100,000 life insurance certificate until people are sold on, until people know more about, fraternal life insurance. We have greater future that the commercial companies. Surely, they sell more volume and insurance in force, but we are selling contentment. We are selling fraternity--:and what a great thing that is! • o OUR OWN SPJST MUST get on its toes. We have been neglecting our organizers. We have failed to teach them. I am giad that we started to offer them sales training courses. But it is only a start. As Brother Marek, our president, announced in the last meeting, held on October 13, we have 17 applicants who have already started to study. It is a pretty good beginning, but it
isn't enough. We have well over 200 organizers. Some of them work, some wait for a new member to knock at their, door. We need at least 50 or 60 active organizers, or about eight or ten good workers in every one of the seven districts. Some of the districts could stand twenty sincere and conscientious organ-: izers. THE COURSES are not difficult. The text used are on a high school' level:. The individual who has only grammar schooling may find it somewhat hard, but even he can Master it. You don't have to be a college graduate to master it. Of course, if your have some training' in a business school, it will be td" yetie advantage. Planning to take this organ-" isers' course is like planning a trip. How you should go depends on what you start with, where you start, how fast you wish to go, and when you want to get there. The course should be mastered'' in eight, ten or twelve weeks. One of the applicants started it on September £1, mastered a lesson a day, answered a, questionnaire attached to each lesson,' mailed it to Brother Marek, and finished' the entire course of thirteen lessons in 13 days. Now he is ready to take the final examination. Before any one of the organizers takes the final examiria. tion, Brother Marek and your editor have to call a. meeting of those ..Who-, covered the entire course, go over the training course, review it from A 'to Zv in a one-day class discussion and get the applicants ready for the examination. The final test will come from the Fraternal Field Manager's Association, and it will not be controlled by the Supreme.. Lodge. THERE IS ONE requirement before the examination is taken. Each appli-, cant must secure a certain amount .af„-insurance for the SPJST. The course may look like so much theory, but the applicant must furnish the amount of insurance required. That part was explained by Brother Marek in his letter to the organizers. Should you need additional information, write to him and let him explain to you what is not clear.

SELLING INSURANCE FOR CHILDREN The growth of insurance for childrew during the last few years has been truly amazing", is a statement which I have just read in a book "Juvenile InsuranCe."
"Incidentally, George, I have used this very same plan for my son. And what I like about it particularly is that some day, when he's 21, I can say, 'Son, here's a policy of life insurance which Dad took out for you when you were two. Take it over yourself and pay the premiums. The premiums are just about $200 a year.' That amount is not staggering; it's something that he can handle. And I'm closing out my son's life insurance needs virtually until he is 30.
Last year, the amount of life insurance sold in the United States on children was four billion dollars. It was a sisable percent of total sales. We, in our SPJST, are slow in realizing that the sale of insurance for children is just as important as that of getting adult members. Our organizers will have less trouble "And I want to talk to you a moment, te insure a child for a larger amount George, right from the heart. WHEN YOU SAY DO" There is a tremendous responsibility in those two words. Your chances are good if you realize that great and extraordinary responsibility. 'Last year almost 2,000 instructors in more than 500 colleges and universities gave courses regarding the importane6 of these two little words. Out of the million-odd Americans who will say those two' Words in the next twelve months, who will pledge themselves, with the words "I do", a third will break the pledge, a third will be separated or divorced in the next ten years. Does that mean that the couples were not sincere when they said "I do"? Does it inean that they said it with a mental reservation, "Ah, well, I'll give it a try, and ,if doesn't work —"? Or does it mean that they simply were not mature encirigh to realize the hesponsibility? Evidently,' the emational maturity is lacking in a number of cases when the vow. is taken. 4arnes, F. Bender, Ph. D , director of National Institute fel* Human Relations wrote , :nbook on the subject, "Living for Young Homemakers", published by Street; andSmith. In the book he pointed out some guideposts to happy marriage. Here are some of them: Yon, both had a reasonably happy childhood. According to statistics, says Dr. Render, gathered at the National Institute for Human Relations, the chances that your marriage will end in diyoree,,are three times as great if your own; parents were separated or divorced in:iyour-, childhood. Your own emotional pattern has some flaws which needs careful watching. ;YQU -have a similar background. If you male ! from the same general cultural background, you understand each other better. You look at the fundamental values: ;alike. You are more likely to develop common interests, enjoy common viewpoints. You have known each other several y ears.; . ,If you marry someone you have known less than a year, you, are courting divorce — according to the statistical! studies. One study, conducted under profeSSOr Lewis Terman in California, indicates that an acquaintanceship of as long as five years has the best chance of producting married happiness. A floor of ;eleven months is a good one ta put on engagement time. On the other hand, very protracted engagements involve subtle strains which make them equally inadvisable. .The husband-to-be has employments and vocationally adjusted. You may be amazed to know that while abject
poverty increases divorce, there is no known relationship between amount cf' income and happy marriage. Happy and unhappy • marriages are distributed through all economic levels. The important economic factor in promoting marital happiness is certainly of income, not size. It's the steady jobs that make fewer divorces. Statistical counts show that -actors, traveling salesmen, musicians, and bartenders have the highest divorce rates, while farmers, engineers and teachers are practically "divorce-proof." You have worked out an agreement about finances. Did you know that the reason unhappy couples most often give for breaking up their marriage is disagreement about' money matters? Some authorities think it's the basic reason. But others suspect that money disputes arise out of still deeper tensions. Nevertheless, when a married couple draw up a budget together and stick to it. they have an excellent guarantee of successful marriage. You have not married too young. If both bride and groom are under 20 at the time they say "I do," their chances of getting a divorce are ten times greater than if they are "the ideal marrying ages;" that is, 24 years for the bride; 29 for the groom. If the bride is under 20 or the groom under 21 — whatever the age of the other .partner — the risk of divorce is increased between two and ten times. You do not elope. An elopement is based on so many unfortunate things — hasty decision, parental disapproval, need for secrecy, childlike remanticism. The divorce rate among those who run away to marry is extremely high. When young people study marriage and family relations, they realize that they have to use their common sense in selecting a life partner. But suppose you are already married. Suppose you didn't have a chance to think of marriage as a serious business before you said "I do." Is it too late? That depends upon your will to make make your marriage succeed. Let us suppose that you recently said "I do" without taking all the premarital precautions the marriage relations experts would recommend. Here are several ways, that will help you to keep your vow and build a strong and satisfying marriage, until death do you part. Be a good housekeeper. Data collected from Chicago divorce courts show that bad housekeeping contributes to divorce in 17 per cent of the cases studied. Bad housekeeping outreaches jealousy by 9
per cent, and nagging by 11 per cent. And the modern husband helps around the house — particularly if he has a wife who holds down a fulltime position. Eat at home a lot. Learn the joy of preparing a meal together. Don't be afraid to make a pleasant ritual of eating. It tastes better that way, Irritability and undernourishment from poor home cooking. and quick meals are some of the reasons why couples end up in the domestic relations court. Statistics reveal that wives and husbands who are 15 poundsor more underweight have an inordinately high divorce rate! Study to keep up with your mate. Similarity in schooling of husband and wife characterizes well-adjusted couples. When wide educational differences exist, the chances are better for a happy marriage if the husband is more highly educated than the wife, rather than the reverse. In these days of reading courses provided by public libraries; extension courses supplied by state universities; correspondence courses — each may continue his or her education indefinitely. If, therefore, an educational gap exists, close it. Become sexually compatible. Marriage is one case where ignorance is not bliss. It .is a serious cause of maladjustment. The fact that so many .couples find it embarrassing or impossible to discuss their sexual problems only doubles the difficulty. But the effort of swallowing your prudery should not be too high a price to pay for a happy marriage, and only an expert can help you solve such a dilemma. Plan to have a family. Couples with one child are twice as likely to get a divorce as those with two children; nine times as likely as if they had five children or more. Children increase responsibilities and deepen emotional ties. Childlessness defeats the basic reason for marriage — t o rear children. In a sampling survey we conducted in Nassau. County, New York, childless couples reported, virtually without exception, that their marital happiness increased after they adopted one or more children. (This does not mean that couples with irreconcilable differences should have a child to "bring them together." In such 'cases, the child often acts as a further irritant.) If possible, have at, least two children (Continued on page 23.)

THE NATIONAL MILK BOWL Before our civilization became complex, each family was almost perfectly capable of giving the child the proper background for life: Today, that is no longer possible. Today, the community life and community association become a most influential factors. We, as fmternalists, should step in and help sponsoring every worthwhile- projects. Our children are going to play some plays even though it be in a railroad yard. The other day your editor received a letter calling his attention to such a worthwhile project. One speaker at the National Fraternal Congress made a very illuminating remark: "It is far better for a boy to wear a player's uniform and keep him out of mischief than to neglect him until he is ready for a prison uniform." Consequently, I place the content of the letter before the readers of the Vestnik. Bryan, Texas Dear Mr. Valcik: Of interest to your readers may be the fact that the young housewife whose suggestion led directly to the founding of The National Milk Bowl, annual football classic for small-fry elevens, Mrs. Elizabeth Weafer, came from a C4ech family in Burleson and Lee counties. Mrs. Weafer, whose mother's maiden name was Shriek, also, studied four years of Czech, when she was a student at Caldwell High School. Many of your readers know this already, and have followed with great interest the development of The Milk Bowl. The latest release on the Bowl is attached to this letter. Sincerely yours, Eugene C. Weafer Promotional Director THE NATIONAL MILK BOWL The 1952 National Milk Bowl, annual football classic for small-fry elevens, will be held, this year, at Rosenberg, on December 6th, under the sponsorship of the local Lions Club, and with the cooperation of, seventeen Lions Clubs of Greater Houston. Proceeds go to a canye for spastic children, , at Kerrville. The Milk Bowl, a community service project, is held in a different Texas city each year. An outstanding small-fry team from Texas wilt meet one from out of, state, in a colorful event that will have national -press, radio, movie, magazine, and TV (film) coverage, plus the appearance of top-flight 11611YwoOd - movie stars. The
game will be broadcast over the full facilities, coast to coast, of The Mutual Broadcasting System, 600 stations, with Al. Heifer doing the play by play. Since the founding of The Milk Bowl in 1939, the event has been recognized by The Associated Press of New York as one of the leading Bowl classics of The United States, on a list that includes The Rose Bowl and The Cotton Bowl; has been honored by The Texas House of Representatives; and has been described by the dean of exas sports editors, Jinx Tucker of Waco, as "just about the most worthwhile sports project in Texas for many years." ) • 4, • (
When You Say D (Continued from page 22.) and you will be increasing the chances of their future married happiness. It is a fact that divorce among only children is 20 per cent higher than among siblings, and a large percentage of only children never marry at all. Face your problems as they arise. Our studies shoW that couples who allow their conflicts to go unresolved for a year or more have a high divorce rate. Those who take them in hand immediately find a quick readjustment. Suppose for example, you can't agree about relatives. Don't let your fights grow in number and bitterness. Find a solution. Bear in mind that speech was made to open man to woman; not to rear barriers between them. Talk out your doubts, your worries and fears with your mate. Or perhaps you need to talk it over with a clergyman or psychologist. They can possibly help you to a more wholesome compromise. Is "I do" a heavy responsibility? Of course it is. But the trouble is not in the responsibility. It lies rather in the widespread ignorance of it. For when you say "I do," knowing all its implications, you take a vow that can give you the greatest joy a mature man or woman can experience — the opportunity to build a successful marriage. ) • 4 • ( A kind lady dropped a quarter into the cup, and the man on crutches thanked her. "It must be terrible," the lady said, "not to have the use of one's limbs. But I dare say it's a lot better than being blind." "I'll say!" the beggar replied. "Last week when I was blind, people put all kinds of slugs and washers into my cup."

POISON IN YOUR HOME Here is an important article which should be read by everyone who is using insect sprays or insecticides in house or garden. It was published in the Journal of Living. Your editor urges you to read it — and heed it! No one wants flies and mosquitoes buzzing around the house. These pests are known to be disease and filth carriers. Neither do you want bugs to "take over” your garden. But if you valueyourhealth, beware of trying to exterminate insects by spraying them with DDT or with any of the similar new insecticides! We know now that many of these insecticides are dangerous. Exactly how dangerous no one is yet in a position to say. Yet scientific report published to date have proved that such poisons are potentially harmful to people — in fact to all warm-blooded animals. Laboratory studies show that they can be absorbed by the body and are capable of causing damage to the liver and other organs, and may possibly affect the nervous system. Back in 1949, after traces of DDT were discoved in milk, the government warned against spraying dairy barns with the insecticide. Studies showed that even if only the ceilings were sprayed while the barns were empty, cows absorbed the poison and produced contaminated milk. Before this finding, dairy herds were actually covered with DDT to save them from being pestered by flies. And frequently cattle feed was also sprayed with the poison. In other words, while we were eliminating fly-borne dangers, we were tainting our milk supply. Our babies were being fed DDT-contaminated milk. The full results of this, and of other mistakes will not be known for a long time. It is comparatively simple to prove that a large dose of these poisons can cause quick death. It is much harder to determine the effect of smaller doses, such as one may get from eating various foods contaminated with insecticides, or from absorbing the poisons while using them in spray or Other forms. The most obvious toxic effect of these insecticides is the rash which may de- I velop from actual skin contact. But such irritation may be far less serious than the internal injury — not immediately apparent — which may develop from inhaling the insecticide spray. You may well ask why DDT, chlordane, lindane, parthion and other highly poisonous insecticides were introduced to the public without adequate warning about the perils connected with their use.
And the answer is that no one fully understood the risk. World War II is partially to blame. Although DDT, an other poisonous insecticides, had been known for many years, wartime conditions prompted their use for the first time on a large scale. Troops fighting in areas infested with insect carriers of typhus, malaria, encephalitis and other dread diseases were dusted with insecticides to prevent epidemics. The experts say that in using DDT they took a "calculated risk". They knew that there was danger; but the question was whether the poison, or the possibility of epidemics, presented the greater hazard. They chose to use poison. After the fighting was over, DDT was offered to the public as a wonder discovery. Little was said about its dangers. And in quick succession other poisons were introduced; there was a new poison for eliminating practically every pest. It took only a few years before the experts began to issue their warnings. But that did not halt the sale of the poisons. You can still buy a DDT bomb. Or DDT powder. Or chlordane, which is even more dangerous. It is againt the law to sell many types of poison without prescription, but you can buy, and use, as much of an insecticide as you wish. When the experts testified before the House Select Committee to Investigate the Use of Chemical in Food Products, there was plenty of bad news concerning the insecticide situation. But did you hear of it? Probably not, because much of it was a trifle too "hot" to print. For example, Arnold J. Lehman, M. D., Director of the Division of Pharmacology in the U. S. Food and Drug Administration, testified that chlordane is four to five times more poisonous than DDT. "It penetrates the skin very readily. Therefore, anyone handling it could be poisoned. Or if it is used as a household spray, the potential hazard to living in these houses is quite great because of the ability of chlordane to penetrate the skin and because of the volatility of the insecticide and the possibility of poisoning by inhalation. More to the point is that it is very toxic to the liver and kidneys of an individual." Yet when chlordane was introduced, it was described as being useful in protecting all types of field crops. It is still being sold, not only to commercial growers, but to the general public. Parathion, even more dangerous, can likewise be purchased anywhere. While Dr. Lehman was testifying before the Congressional Committee, one of the (Continued on Page 26)

STREAMLINING YOUR APPROACH (Condensed from Manager's Handbook) The chassis plan of selling life insurance simplifies the use of prepared presentations. It minimizes the amount of memorization and rehearsal needed and makes a real contribution to increased skill. Why is it called the chassis plan? Because it uses .the same principle as an automobile chassis, which is a basic framework on which may be fitted any one of a great number of bodies. It involves a standard approach, a number of presentation bodies, and a standard close. The objective of the approach, of course, is to sell an interview. It is logical to assume that an approach can be built which will gain a hearing, whether the subject is life insurance for retirement income, or for clean-up fund, or something else. That is what the chassis plan approach aims to do. The direct standard approach is simply: "Mr. Prospect, my name is John Underwriter. I am associated with the Ajax Life. "I have no way of knowing whether my services as a life underwriter will be helpful to you just at this time. But I do have an idea which has proved so valuable to other people in positions similar to yours that I think it can be valuable to you. "However, you can decide that very quickly by your answers to three simple questions. That's fair enough, isn't it?" It is quite possible that the underwriter will now meet an objection to the interview. A man is rarely "in the market" for insurance. It is not our purpose here to deal in answers, but it is clear that we must nail down his excuse, whether real or fancied, before we can proceed. We are still in the approach; the prospect has not yet consented to hear the presentation. He has merely said that he will decide whether or not to listen to us after judging the merit of our questions. It is at this point that the standardized procedure, rather than a "canned" talk comes to the assistance of the salesman. He asks those questions which he believes will stimulate the interest of this particular man. aliere are several groups of leading questions which can be asked, depending on the prospect. It is apparent that they all fit into a pattern. They follow a basic track. They are the "same kind" of questions.
paying Social Security taxes? "And I also assume that, like most men with whom I talk, you have not had the time in the past 60 days or so to figure out the new schedule of benefits which you and your family may receive for the tax you are paying? "Well, Mr. Prospect, since you are paying Social Security taxes and since you haven't taken time to figure your benefits, I believe you would be interested in two things: "First, what you and your family are entitled to receive under Social Security and second, under what conditions you and your family would receive nothing. "You'd like to know those two things, wouldn't you, Mr. Prospect?" • • Clean-up Fund. "I assume that, in the event of your death, certain expenses would have to be met — current bills, income taxes, doctor bills perhaps, administrative costs, and so forth? Is that correct? "I further assume that you would want them paid with the least disturbance and inconvenience to Mrs. Prospect. Is that correct? "Well, Mr. Prospect, if I can show you a plan which will guarantee payment of these bills for possibly as little as three cents on a dollar, you would be interested, wouldn't you?" • • Readjustment Income. "Mr. Prospect, if your income from your present job were suddenly reduced to one third of its present amount, you'd undoubtedly meet that situation by finding another job. Is that correct? "But if your income were reduced to one-third and you couldn't find a job, you'd be in a tough spot. Wouldn't you? "That's the position that most widows find themselves in. If I could show you a plan whereby your widow would not have to jump from a third story window but could descent the steps of income with dignity and with time, you would be interested, wouldn't you?" • • Educational Fund. "Mr. Prospect, I understand that you have a son, (Name), and that he is quite a boy. I assume that you are planning to send him to college? "And I suppose that, one way or another, you are the fellow who will have to foot he bills? "Then you probably have started saving money already, so that compound interest will help do the job. But it is Social Security. true --- is it not — whether you pay for "I assume that you, like most men, are his education in advance installments or
whether in spot cash when your son is in college — there is a possibility — ever so slight, but a possibility nevertheless that you might not live to complete' your plans for financing his education, and that he would be deprived of it? "Then, if I can show you a plan that has all the benefits of compound interest, and guarantees that the funds will be there if you live, and guarantees your son's education if you don't live, you'd be interested, wouldn't you?" • • Retirement Income. "Mr. Prospect, I assume that you,. like most men, are interested in saving money. Is that correct? "I further assume that you, like most men, find it difficult to save money regularly over a long period of time? "Well, Mr. Prospect, if I could show you a savings plan which is the best savings plan you have ever seen — you to be the sole judge — could you save $50 a month?" Mortgage Redemption. "Mr. Prospect, I understand that ydu have recently bought a home. Is' that correct? "I assume that, like most of Vs,' you have made a substantial down paytnent and that you are paying the balance in installments like rent. "I further assume that you like 'rivist men, in the event of your death wthild want to leave your family the option' Of remaining in the home or selling Is that correct? "Then, if I could show you a plan which would leave a home, not a mortgage — a deed, not a debt — at a cost not exceeding 1% on your mortgage, you'd be interested, wouldn't you?" • • Programming. "I assume that you, like most 'Men, bought your life insurance to accornplish a definite purpose — the protectionl Of your family, Is that correct? "I also assume that you, like most inert, are interested in getting the 'host fOr your money. Is that correct? "Mr. Prospect, If I could show you how to increase the guaranteed benefits , of your present life insurance from 25% to 40% without costing you a cent or without a medical examination, you would be interested, wouldn't you?" These percentage increases are sound, of course. They represent a lump sum of life insurance placed under inconle options with installments certain. Such in(Continued on page 26.)

POISON IN YOUR HOME (Continued from page 24.) Committeemen remarked that his wife had used parathion sprays "to discourage ants" and when they became immunized to it, she had bought chlordane. He inquired whether there was any danger in such spraying, Dr. Lehman answered tersely: "There is." One of the most dangerous of the new insecticides is selenium. Experiments have proved that if food is contaminated by even minute quantities of selenium (as little as three part per million) it can produce cirrhosis of the liver and may, eventually, cause cancer of the liver. And this poison is particularly insidious. For example, if it is sprayed on an apple it can penetrate the skin and appear in the pulp . Furtheremore, the selenium that drops to the ground when a crop is sprayed stays there, and can be absorbed by a subsequent crop planted in the same earth. Testifying on the subject of ,e(4( nium, Dr. Lehman said: "From our work on selenium compounds we are of the opinion that selenium should not be used as an insecticide." Yet the sale of insecticides containing selenium is still unrestricted. You may hove bought some to spray your vegetable garden. If you still have any on hand, throw it away. Right now! Besides pointing out the possible health menace of these insecticides, experts are now questioning their long-run effectiveness in controlling insect pests. Their use has upset the natural balance in the insect world. In some case harmful insects have multiplied rapidly because the insecticides have killed the bugs which formerly fed on them. Furthermore, in sects develop an immunity to specific, poisons. Certain strains of flies and mosquitoes are no longer affected by DDT. maybe you have observed this phenomencn yourself. Stronger poisons are therefore required. If we continue on this Path, where will it lead? Is there any possible solution As far as crop sprays are concerned, author Louis Bromfield, whose Malabar Farm is Internationally famous as a proving ground, has stated that if soil is properly fertilized, poison sprays can be eliminated. No sprays are used on his farm. During his testimony before the Congressional Committee, Mr. Bromfield stated that he had been asked by both the Heinz and Campbell companies to help the farmers from whom they buy produce to learn the agricultural techniques that make spraying unnecessary. Representatives of the A & P chain were al-
