MUSINGS OF THE EDITOR IT WAS A PRIVILEGE that your editor could attend two very interesting; meetings recently. One was a district meeting in the hall of Vesmernest Lodge Na. 68 in Nelsonville on Sunday, October 26. District No, One, comprising eight counties and thirty-five local lodges, held its first meeting there. By a roll call it was found out that 74 delegates from 17 visiting lodges came to the meeting, not counting a large number of local members. THE MEETING WAS called for the purpose of electing officers , of the district, deciding about the frequency of future meetings, selecting a place for the next district meeting, and laying groundwork for future expanding activity within the district. Brother Alfred Stepan, of Lodge No. 33, was elected president of the district. Brother Ladgie Blazek, a member of Lodge 68, was voted in as vice-president. The secretarial duties were placed in the hands of Brother P. P. Baron, secretary of Lodge No. 1. A five-member prCgramming committee is to be appointed by president and vice-president to work out plans for a meeting to be held in the Kovar comumnity, near Smithville, at a date selected by the officers. The district meetings are to be held twice 'a year. PATRIOTISM AND Today as a free man of a great Democratic nation I am addressing you as free men and women in a land of freedom. In many countries in the world at this moment such an experience w o u 1 d be impossible. Among the countries where a meeting, such as you have here today, would be imspossible is the country from where many of our members and forefathers came from, that is, Czechoslovakia. As free men and women we must recognize we faCe a grave danger. We in America today face a danger from within our own country just as treacherous and as serious as that represented by the Kremlin. The danger from within is a specter of Big Government and creeping socialism which theatens to deour American way of life. Our system of economics and government and our social order are based upon the Christian concept of the imaortance of the individual. It is founded en the idea that man is created in the L ,.age of God and that the soul of each individual is so important that God's own Son gave his life to redeem that Soul. 'Phis religious concept was in the minds- of the Fathers of our country when they wrote the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and founded our Federal Government. The Declaration proclaims: "We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that aong these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. IN THE NAME OF HUMANITY Dr. Karel Hujer, a well-known astronomer connected with the University of Chattanooga, who had lectured here in Texas several times, forwarded to your editor a letter received from Berlin, Germany. This letter reveals the desperate fight of 182 Czechs and 18 Slovaks living in Berlin. Read the letter and then see if you could not find some old clothing to be sent to these people. There are 34 children in this group. The letter reads as follows: Dear brother: Thank you for your letter of July 16, contents of which pleased us very much, and proved that in this difficult time there are still friends who are willing to offer their relping hands. Concerning your inquiry, we inform you'that in Berlin at this time there are 200 Czech political refugees, of which 80 are unmarried (17 women, 63 men), 19 families without children and 26 families with children. The total number of Czech refugee children is 34. For your information, I am enclosing a list of all Czechoslovak political refugees, 182 Czechs and 18 Slovaks. Regarding our Association, we are a self-supporting organization doing social work, non-political, and absolutely independent of all political parties and groups. We bring together all Czech and Slovak political refugees. Our Association was founded with no financial help whatsoever, only by the sacrificing labor of its functionaries, who realized the ne-j cessity of creating in Berlin a legal refugee organization to protect the interest of refugees. Our Association is the only organization of refugees from behind the Iron Curtain in this city, which protects the interest of refugees from Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Rumania and Yugoslavia besides Czechoslovakia. We take care of decent rooming for refugees, of their feeding, their emmigration affairs, and of their speedy departure from Berlin into Western Germany. An increasing number of refugees accumulating in Western Berlin would cause a tightening of security regulations by Communist administrators in order to prevent such illegal escapes from entering into West Berlin. Our organization opened its office and discharges all agenda of the refugees from their arrival until their emigration or eventual flight into Western Germany. This is made possible by the fact that functionaries are serving daily from morning until evening without any remunaration whatsover. The worst situation in Berlin concers

the lack of food, clothing and shoes. In this connection, the sacrificing labor of local functionaries is insufficient and we must turn to the free world with plead: ings for help, which, alas, meets with little understanding and even smaller response. Refugees in Berlin walk in rags, and it is common knowledge that in order to make necessary official appear! ance, refugees must borrow from each ' other, this or that piece of clothing. Still worse is the situation of refugees concerning food. At the last official medical examination, it was ascertained that of the 200 refugees, 40 are seriously affected by TB, with 18 cases of other serious afflictions, which have their roots in entirely insufficient and under-nourishing food. The worst tragedy in this case is that this misery of Czechoslovak refugees has been noted by Communist propaganda, which repeatedly spreads both in the newspapers and over the radio how West mistreats the refugees and refuses them all help. To this we must add that the City of Berlin affirms that it has no means to support the refugees and that Berlin itself has 500,000 unemployed, and directs us to Americans and their Allies for assistance. We also encounter some unfavorable attitude produced by the antiCzech propaganda of Sudeten Germans. What to do? Concretely, it would be possible to help the refugees in West Berlin as follows: It would be very urgent to help the refugees without delay with clothing, shoes and especially by improving their food As stated above, the food situation is worst, and it is unconditionally necessary that our refugees obtain this food at the earliest possible time in order to prevent the spread of further social diseases, particularly TB. This will provide the foundation for further restoration. We beg of you, dear friend, to inform of the suffering and misery of refugees in Berlin, who, far from their homeland, struggle for the better Christian future, • and thus may stimulate and encourage collections of clothing and shoes for the above mentioned refugees.- Above all, it will be necessary to make a collection of food for the refugees in Berlin, in Which case CARE package action would be the most effective for their delivery is easiest because of the fact that CARE depot is located right in Berlin -Steglitz. During my first month in the life insurance business I sold a small policy to a very prosperous man. He was in business for himself and all of his equipment was fully paid for. He told me why he had been so' fortunate: As a young man he had been persuaded to buy $5,000 of endowment insurance, and he had made his mother the beneficiary. What I Didn't Know About Thanksgiving Your editor would like to loan you an nrraful cf books. One of them is called ' "The Book of Festivals". Another is mined -"Customs of Mankind". Still another has a title "Two Bybylons". The fourth one is "Thanksgiving". Then there is a book named "Saints and Strangers", and another "The Year's Festivals". That armful of books may keep you busy till November 27, 1952', the Thanksgiving Day. At least, you would learn something about.' social habits and practices, an amusing course in sociology. The books )howed me what I didn't know about Thanksgiving. It was my impression that Thanksgiving :Pity was strictly an American holiday. Back in the gran-Ian-days I learned that I he first Thanksgiving was celebrated by he Pilgrims in 1621. As recently as a ear ago, I wrote hi the Vestnik that the first Thanksgiving was celebrated with religious pomp, hospitality, gaiety, and some sensible merrymaking. I always consicic rod turkey dinners, cranberry sauce and mince or pumpkin pies as symbols of the first Thanksgiving celebration. I am ready to admit that my history lessons Mitst have been slightly neglected. With all due respect to my former belief or your belief, Thanksgiving did not originate in America. The first Thanksgiving festival in North America was not in 1621. The celebration of the Pilgrims of 1621 . was not decorated with turkeys, a ad tbe group of Indians were not wel nie guests sitting around as pictured on numerous paintings. There were little hospitality, little merrymaking, little turkey, if any at all, no cranberry sauce, no pumpkin pies, no mince pie: It is just a le g end, like the one about Paul Revere reaching Concord, just a popular story coming down from the past. Although it is true that the holiday, as Americans celebrate -it, has its roots in New England, the idea of selecting a certain time each year to give thanks for the harvest is not new. It stretches across the centuries from the times the ancient Babylonians worshipped their god of harvest. In the books which I mentioned at the beginning of this article, one can trace thanksgiving festivals through an-1 cient Rome, Greece, India, China and Japan. For' instance, in China, on the fifeenth day of the eight moon (counting from the first new moon in the latter part of January or the first part of February), the peasants marked the end of harvest with a moon festival, most joyous occasion of the year. The moon, thought, 10 be the god of crops and har-

vest, was honored with special roundshaped foods. The children stayed up late on that night to see the beautiful floweres that were supposed to fall from the moon, bringing good fortune to all. The Japanese celebrated two harvest festivals, one in October, the other in November. There is a long description of the two Japanese festivals in "The Book of Festivals" by D. G. Spicer. Both emperor and his subjects took part in these national harvest festivals. In the book "Customs of Mankind", by Eichler, we learn that the Siamese have an old festival which is known as the "Swing Festival". The purpose of the celebration is the same as that of Thanksgiving, that is "to show gratitude for the richness of the land and the happiness of the people". However, the Si- ! amese have their own way to shoW that they are thankful, because they have to use the much-quoted sacred white e e-1 phant of Siam to take the leading part! in the celebration. Throughout. India, they celebrate "Di-1 wali" as a kind of harvest festival. It is marked by feasting and family reunions when the houses are gaily illuminated with myriads Of small lamps. Very good account of the "Diwali", Thanksgiving of India, is given in "The Book of Festivals", by Spicer, and also in Hislcp's, "Two Babylons", page 159. The ancient Greeks also had a feast day of thanksgiviing. Nine day were set aside in honor of Demeter, goddess of cornfields and harvests. In Athens, it was celebrated in November by married women only. "Two wealthy and distinguished ladies were chosen to perform the sacred function in the • name of. the others and to prepare the sacred meal,' which corresponded to our Thanksgiving! On the fist y of the feast, great mirth and rejoicing, the women went in procession to the promontory of Cohas and celebrated their Thanksgiving for three days in the temple of Demeter. On their return a festival occured for three days in Athens, sad at first but gradually growing into an orgy of mirth and dancing. Here a cow and a sow were offered to Demeter, besides fruit and honeycombs. The symbols of the fruitful) goddess were pdppies and ears of corn, a basket of fruit and a little pig." — Thanksgiving, by R. (IA Schauffler. Among the harvest deities was the one worshiped by the Romans, the goddess Ceres. The thanksgiving festival was called Cerelia, and occured yearly on October 4. The pagan Romans and Greclans worshiped Ceres as the "mother of

Corn". She is pictured in ancient Greece as the Great Mother, with the babe at her breast or sometimes holding a handful of wheat. In Germany, Belgium and other countries Martinsfest was a double festival, which honored both "Saint" Martin and Martin Luther. The celebration orginated as an early thanksgiving festival in honor of Freya, goddess of plenty, who was supposed to have guarded the harvests of the ancient Germans. During the celebration there were processions, bonfires, and general merrymaking. Also, the boys and girls were given apples and nuts. Colorful harvest festivals were held by the medieval English who believed a "corm spirit" reigned over the fields, and their paganistic rites were directed at "placating and gratifying this god of harvest". In England the autumn festiVal was called Harvest Home. This festival, according to H. A. Patten, "was celebrated with many rude and boisterous proceedings . The day was spent in dancing on the village green, with rural sports, while at night great blazing bonfires were built, and great quantitieS of home -brewed ale were drank." The spirit of giving thanks became an excuse for loafers, who would rather eat and play than work. At harvesttime, especially, "the feast-days and saints' days were so numerous that the idlers neglected the very crops for which they were 'so anxious to be thankful, "in not taking the opportunity of good and serene weather offered upon the same, in time of harvest'." In fact, the religious and civil thanksgiving days had increased to such an extent that there were very few left for working days. During the Commonwealth under Cromwell, there were observed, in one year, more than a hundred feast days. Except for King Edward's reign, no one was allowed to work on such days, and those who did were fined. The day began with "a long religious service in the morning, a fast till four o'clock, then a public feast". However, the religious services were soon shortened or omitted altogether. The entire day was set aside for games and sports. Riotous celebrations were held, not only on the harvest thanksgiving days, but "the Sabbath, saints' days, fast and feast days, were equally times of recreation". Latimer, who went on one of these "holy days" to a certain church to preach, found "the village deserted, the church locked, and the people all gone a-may(Continued on page 23.)

In fact, these and other offensive practices became so intolerable to the Puritan mind that they went to Holland in' disgust of English "holy days'''. In Holland, over a period of ten years, they grew accustomed to Dutch fast and feast 'days, which they felt Were more fitted to the occasion; mainly because the poor were allowed - to feast with their more favored neighbors". Upon coming to the North American shores, the Pilgrims celebrated their first thanksgiving in Newfoundland, in the year 1578. A similar service was held by the Popham colony, who settled at Sagadahoc on the .Maine coast, in 1607. Because the celebration at Plymouth is so familiar it is considered to be the first Thanksgiving. In his . book Saints. and Strangers, George F. Willison. declared that "at the first Thanksgiving feast in New England the company may have enjoyed, though there is no mention of it in the record, some of the long-legged "Turkies", . . . And.there were cranberries by the bushel. in neighboring bogs. It is very doubtful, however, if . the . Pilgrims had yet contrived a happy use for them. Nor was the table graced with a later and even more felicitous invention — "pumpkin pie." Neither is there any mention of the mince pie. The Indians, who attended the feast were not patiently squatting, as usually portrayed in the first Thanksgiving pictures. Instead, "except for the mighty chief Massasoit, with whom the small band of 104 Pilgrims had shrewdly contracted a non-aggression pact, the 90 braves who whooped down on the harvest icstival were both uninvited and unwel-

come until they out and bagged their own venison," said Life magazine, November 26, 1945. That which attracted the ninety braves to the feast was more than the venison, of which they had plenty. The strong Indian braves loved the "confortable warm water", that is, Holland gin, which the Pilgrims praised as "very sweete & strong". Many deny this festival to be the first Thanksgiving. because "there is no record of any special devotional or . spiritual observance, or solemn airs during this week of eating and drinking." Two years dater, in . 1623, Governor Bradford proclaimed a day of fasting and prayer in the midst of summer drouth. By the coming of rain during the prayers, the next day was changed into thanksgiving. But is was not until almost fifty years 'later that the residents of Plymouth - Celebrated another autumnal Thanksgiving. In the meantime, the idea of thanksgiving had taken strong hold in the neighboring Puritan colony of the Massachusetts Bay. There the first public Thanksgiving took place on July 8, 1630, but it had nothing to do with harvest, or turkeys, or any kind of feasting. The Puritans gave thanks for • kinds of events, for "Protestant victories in the war" (Thirty years' war at the time), for their triumphs over Indians, and in 1689 for the accession of William and Mary in England. In the last three hundred years Thanksgiving Day has been held in at least eight different months by proclamation of the Governors or at the "request and suggestion of the President." Abraham Lincoln issued (1863) a Presidential proclamation fixing Thanksgiving day as a holiday on the fourth or last Thursday in November. In 1939, 1940 and 1941 observance was divided, when president Roosevelt proclaimed the preceding Thursday for observance. On. BUT THE FIRST REQUIREMENT would be to give the local officers something definite to work with, something concrete to strive for, some method of checking on the lodge activity by a common yardstick, adopted and accepted by all. KEEP OUR TEEN-AGERS IN SCHOOL American high schools have a shock-, ing "casualty" rate. Before reaching thei1 senior year, more than five out of every ten youngsters in the United States quit high school — bored, disillusioned and confused. Each year; ' at least 1,000,000 boys and girls surrender their birthright to education. Their reasons? High school, seems meaningless to them, a million miles removed from the vital problems - that plague adolescent minds: how to prepare for a job, how to keep peace with their families, how to be popular. We pay for this educational failure in terms of thousands of frustrated and bewildered young men and women, drifting through life without purpose. In our present emergency, such failure is even more costly. But America's educators are not re-' signed to failure. In many parts of the country, they are enlisting in a bold new project that promises to slash these "casualty" rates. The plan is called "Life Adjustment Education," and in many communities it has already produced heartening results. In St. Paul, Minnesota, one pioneering Life Adjustment• school graduated 82 per cent of its class last year — more than double the national average. On Chicago's squalid West Side, school drop-outs and juvenile deliquency figures have been cut in half. And in Wilmington, Delaware, a Life Adjustment school has' been losing only three per cent of its students. What is Life Adjustment Education? it is not a cut-and-dried educational blueprint. Instead, it is a warm, understanding approach . to the problems of our 20,000,000 teen-agers. The teaching method has been revolutionized. Life Adjustment is baSed on learning-by-doing. As a result, students hold part-time jobs that tie in closely with their classroom work. In Moline, 'Monis, parents and adolescent children are asked blunt questions about home duties, disagreements, money problems. On the basis of their answers, courses in family life are organized. At Forest Park High School in Baltimore, students are sent out to -shop in retail stores. They compare prices and quality, discuss labels, carefully examine advertising slogans and claims. In Cincinnati, teen-age boys eagerly learn how to buy automobiles, file tax forms and finance homes. Du Pont High School in Wilmington, Delaware, has a course in helicopter flying. Here's how the principal of a - high school in White Salmon, Washington,

(By Robert Stein) describes his school's Life Adjustment project: "We're giving these kids an interesting program of learning experiences — teaching them how to get along with one another, preparing them to get and hold jobs, and helping them adjust to social and economic problems. We're making real progress." Most important of all, Life Adjustment looks upon each student as an individual, rather than a statistic. From childhood, Frank W— slowed a remarkable talent for tinkering with mechanical objects. He was a brilliant student in science classes, but only barely above passing level in English and history. Discouraged by his near-failure in these courses, he decided to quit school and go to work in his father's garage. "They can't teach me anything about mechanics," he told his parents. But Frank's school had just instituted a new Life Adjustment course in 'Carter Exploring." A sympathetic teacher patiently explained the value of nontutoring in these subjects. Frank stayed on. Today, he is getting his • engineering degree. But three out of every five students have no plans for entering college or training for a skilled occupation. Here again, Life Adjustment has a workable answer. With the guidance of vocational counselors, boys and girls are given parttime jobs for school credit — and a salary. They work in department stores, filling stations, drug stores, offices, beauty shops, factories. In the classroom, skilled teachers underscore the lessons learned on the job. "High school used to seem like a waste of time," a 16-year-old girl said recently. "I'm not going to be a career woman. I'm only planning to work until I get married. What good are algebra, French and chemistry to me?" Now, since her school switched to Life science courses and arranged for extra Adjustment, this girl is working 15 hours a week, selling cosmetics in a local department store. In class, she's learning techniques that will help her succeed on the job. At the same time, she's acquiring skills that will be usefull when she marries: how to manage money, plan household routine, train children. Getting high school to "make sense" is the challenge Life Adjustment has taken up. It all started at the closing session of an educational conference in Washington, D. C. in the summer of 1945. The challenge was put forward dramatically by Dr. Charles A. Prosser, then director

of the Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis. "We prepare 20 per cent of our high school students to enter college/' he said. "Another 20 per cent are trained ,for skilled occupations. But what are we doing for the neglected 60 per cent who won't go to college or hold skilled jobs?" Dr. Prosser's challenge brought quick results. With the backing of the U. S. Office of Education, a group of leading educators formed the "Commission on Life Adjustment Education for Youth.'' Within a few months, regional conferences were held, plans drawn up, experimental programs put into action. Today, 20 states are working with the Commission to provide useful educate& for all students, including the neglected 60 per cent. More than 2,500 high schools have enrolled under the Life Adjustment banner. New, exciting course titles are mushrooming in these Life Adjustment schools: Managing My Personal Affairs, Choosing a Mate, Home Mechanics and Repair, how to Get a Job, Understanding the News, Personal Finance, Personality Development. The work of the Life Adjustment Commission is a perfect example of teamwork by government and private enter-, prise right down the line. The U.,§. Of fice of Education supplies the educatir onal experts; private agencies, like the Sears, Roebuck Foundation and the American Technical Society provide fends and industrial know-how. Merchants and Manufacturers help school officials dovetail on-the-job experience with classroom work. Life Adjustment plans, for the ueRcls 0 all youngsters. LIVING OVER 100 YEARS People have always been interested in life, expectancy, the life span of man. Can a man live much longer than one hundred years? If he does, what is the longest record? Almost all cases of great age in, human beings are based upon hearsay rather than upon registered birth records. Indeed, hundreds of years have passed since some of the most famous "rocord holders" lived. Some of the most frequently cited ancients include Henry Jenkins (169 years), Thomas Parr (152), herine, Countess of Desmond (140), and christen Drakenburg (146). In a recent book written by statisticiam of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, the reported age of Christen Drakenburg is the only one taken at all seriously. Ttie records of this individual are thought to be reasonably reliable, although it must be admitted that even these may be incorrect. Drakenburg; a Dane, was said to. have lived from 1626 to 1112.. or 146 years. Cettain other investigators, however, do not recognize the claim of the Danes that this countryman of theirs should be extended the victory wreath for having outlived all other modern human Methuseialis. Dr. Maurice Ernest, English biologist who has investigated the question of human longevity, would award the prize to a Canadian, one Pierre Joubert, whose record is more modpst. This man, born in Quebec County in 1701, is thought to have lived more than 113 years. Coming• to more recent times, we find that in 1945 an African native died in Johannesburg who was alleged to have been 130 years old: According to newspaper reports, several investigations of this matter were conducted, and although the investigating agencies did not agree as to the native's exact age, all weave convinced that he was over 120 ears old several years before his death. The. year 1950, like other census years, has produced its quota of stories about t g ed individuals. The oldest claim noted so far by the writer has been made by a man living in Brownsville, Texas. He is stated to have told the census taker that he was 128 years old, and this approximal e age was supported by his relatives. This age has not, so far as I know, been confirmed by official records. do vysokYch hor s krasnYmi lesy, divokymi kvetinami a kapradim. Asi 20 mil netli jsme pkijeli do Ashland, zastavili jsme se v jednom miste, kde bylo hodne divokYch kvetin. Kedvika se aajimala o kvetiny, ja zase jsem chtela mechem obrostloti vetvieku z boroveho stromu. Pro mne byly vgechny moc vysoko, ja tadnou nedostala jakou jsem chtela, zato Hevika mela kviti pine ruce, cot si pochvalovala, jak jsme , se sesly zpatky u kary. Ja jsem ji na to odpovedela, "At to polka nejaka koza, media ti z toho zbude." A take se stalo, jen'te to nebyla koza, byl to jelen. Ptijeda do Ashland, zajeli jsme do parku, kde maji zoo, ptigli jsme k ohrade, kde maji jeleny, ptibehl jeden jelen, streil hlav z pies drat a chmatl Hedvice tu kytici, z ktere ji malo zbylo. Pak jsem litovala, to se to moje promoctvi spinilo, neb Hedvika si chtela tu: kytici uschovat. Talc se tika, katclY Spas now stoji, ale to ,byl podateny Spas.
