Ony sumy penez, ktere jsme do nakch spolkovYch mistnosti vlokli pfed dvaceti, tficeti a vice lety, pfinesly nara mnoho dobra, dokud jsme se starali, jak diuhy na budove vaznouci zaplatiti. POSTMASTER: Send form 3579 with undeliverable copies to S. P. J. S. T., Fayetteville, Texas.

MUSINGS OF THE EDITOR WHILE WE TALK a great deal about the duties and obligations of the individual member to the lodge, such as the payment of dues, attendance of meetings, acceptance of responsibilities, serving on committees, assisting in programs, helping each cther out in time of need, we might as well mention some of the obligations of the lodge to the member.

rious types of social activities to interest him and other members. We have picnics, fish fries, barbecues and luncheons. But some members would like to see also "the moral" and "the cultural" element in the lodge activities. Some would like to hear a lecture, like the one Sister Viasta Coufal mentioned in her report last week. Others would like to have group singing on the stage, not at the bar, or some music, something of the order that Sister Olexa wrote that we had a chance to listen in SanAntonio, in La Villita, where Brother Bundil and his Polka group was playing. me would like any number of different kind of amusements. The question is, Aren't these the obligations of a lodge to a member?

LET US CALL it service to members and start with the time when a new applicant is filling out—or helps to fill out—the application; The old white application has a series of questions and one cf them is just one word with a question mark after the word, like this: . . The paper, whatever its more interesting, aimed for the developname, goes with it. We.ask him, "Do you ment of character and health of our want it?" He answers, "Do I want youth. Ways and means of supporting the Sokol program and co-operating could be found. At the last convention in Houston, we had two Sokol speakers begging us for the very same thing, for helping them and for co-operation with the American Sokol; We only need to be reminded of cur obligations. • TO SUMMARIZE IT, we should, first, start thinking in the terms of what.our lodges are to do for our members, or to find out how much "lodge life" is being left in our local lodges, how much the lodges are engaged in the "proMotion of moral, cultural and economic progress", as stated in our By-laws, Article 2. Then the Supreme Lodge should conduct a survey of the interests and needs of the membership and in accordance with the findings to start planning a complete rejuver ation throughout the SPJST. • THE SUPREME LODGE then can boldly step forward and through the seven districts start sponsoring the most successful programs, offering 'prizes and awards. It would be in harmony with the request made at the Fifth District meeting in Needville, on September 28, and again with the talk in the Seventh' District meeting in Floresville, on November 16. It would prod local lodge officers and committees into a competitive undertaking. • • THE CONCENTRATED EFFORT of the respective Districts and the local lodges with their officers and committees would be fully advertised in our official paper, and probably in the local papers of the communities where the competitive program would be held. We would avail ourselves of every medium of publicity. And that is what we need to realize that there are obligations of the SPJST to the members.

TO THE CHILDREN: I am wondering at this time , how you children in all our lodges are progressing with the Christmas Program, -Christmas Time in Czechoslovakia," which I sent you sometime ago (or with some other program),. TO THE PARENTS: I know you are doing everything possible to help the children with their Christmas Program, and I sincerely hope that "Christmas time in Czechoslovakia' was of some help to you if you already haven't had a program planned. I know you will be very proud of then). We do have smart children, you know, and we must not foil to realize that we should have something for them at all times to continue theh interest in our lodges—if we don't others will and we will lose our Youth—ZO we better do something. We really should have ft Youth Director in every local lodge to help promote and develop our youth membership activities in order for me to be able to work more closely with each individual lodge to the fullest detail in pro-moting and developing our youth programs of interest to them, and to be 'able to correspond with them individually—if necessary— and help solve their problems for they may not all be alike. Unless there is a desired result and hold the interest of our Youth. We need planning for tomorrow, we will not hold the interest of our Youth. We need everyone's cooperation, and we need

The Beautiful Meaning of Christmas The name "Christmas" is said to come from the early English term "Christes Masse" (Christ's Mass), which was used as a result of a special mass .which was celebrated in all the churches on Christmas Day. The origin of the Christmas tree itself has been widely disputed, but authentic German manuscripts in 1608 refer to it as a regular part of Christmas. There are two legends which are further' strenghtened that they originated at that time which are interesting to repeat here. One story is told about Martin Luther's first tree which he brought for his impoverished family, which knew very little of happiness. One day he was walking home, and he thought of the significance of the crisp, Christmas Eve. The sky seemed to him, a huge green velvet studded with candles. No sooner did he think of this comparison, he acted, cutting down a small evergreen. When he came home, he asked his wife to bring all the pieces of candles that were in the house, and these he fastened carefully to the tree's branches and lit them. The soft glow illuminated not only the shabby room but created for everyone thereafter a symbol of this holiday. The other story relates how a German Count in search of a way to cheer his sick wife, had a servant cut down a small evergreen in the forest, had it decorated and brought to his wife's bed. The tree indeed, did make her happier and from that time she grew steadily better. This practise is said to have then spread over the whole country. At first indications seemed to point to the fact that Austria was first, and research showed that the first Christmas tree was lighted there in 1816 by Princess Henriette, and the practise spread, which resulted in entire markets, called Christkindelmarkt. These markets were devoted to the sale of trees and all sorts of trimmings. Sweden celebrated with trees since 1817. England had its first Christmas tree in 1841, inaugurated by Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert. In America, credit for the first Christmas tree is given to Frederick Imgard, • hich stood in his house on Holy Eve of 1847. Since decorations could not be purchased, they were made from paper and other available material. The custom of giving gifts at this time of the year dates back to the ancient Romans, who distributed gifts during the midwinter festival which celebrated the return of longer days, over which fact they rejoiced and gave tokens 'of friendship to one another.

VPSTNIKLETTERS FLOWERS TO THE LIVING Lfet Sunday evening, December 7, Bro. V. H. Barina, his good wife, their daughter Helen, this scribe and his better half made it a "must" to attend the play TULACKA, at Fayetteville. The play, as most of you know, was presented by our good neighbors to the south, HiaholDramatic Club, of Lodge 88, Houston, Texas. We certainly enjoyed every Minute of it and I am sure that this is the consensus of all that were lucky enough to see how hard work plus excellent talent, can put things over. It was wonderful and we hope that other Czech comma" nities have the privilege to see this beautiful play. It is something that will bring every Czech heart into action, even if the beat has slowed up considerably. So a big bouquet of roses to all the players of TITLACKA. Just as a reminder to all lodges of DISTRICT ONE, SPJST; the next meeting is at Lodge Osveta, No. 38, Kovar (Near Smithville), Texas. We will be looking for a lot of you to be with us. It now seems that it may be the last Sunday in April, but watch the Vestnik for definite date, which will be announced in plenty of time. There art a lot of lodges that were not represented at our meeting at Nelsonville. We certainly hope that we will have members from all lodges in the district, at least a few. Fraternally, E. E. Packages will be given to the children and coffee and cookies will be served to the cider people. The program I will be held on Sunday, December 21 at 7 p. rn I was elected as director of our youth' activities in our Lodge with Sister Annie, Jakubce as my assistant. Our Christmas program will be our first part of the various activities we'll have at our lodge throughout the year. the program will not be a success. I am sure that I can depend on all of you members to lend me a hand in this program. Should this turn out to be the case, we will be limited in our efforts to the extent the Supreme Lodge is willing to go along. From a business standpoint to make any undertaking a success, it will be necessary to spend a certain amount of funds before we may expect results,

MY CARIBBEAN CRUISE PART I. Having been confronted with enc6urneing suggestions to write an account of our recent cruise left me almost duty-bound to follow up with it. Although I do not feel equal to the task, alter thinking about it I came to the decision that it might be easier to make an attempt to write than to evade the issue any longer. Let it be understood, at the same time that it is a hopeless effort to do justice to the description of such a pleasant experience. The idea of a Caribbean cruise always seemed to fascinate me and for a long time it held enough charm for me to consider it seriously; and in a vague sort of way I focussed my thinking to the land of the tropics for adventure or, at least, for the pure pleasure of traveling again. The middle of September, therefore, found my mother and me driving to New Orleans where we boarded the SS Chiriqui, one of the sister ships of the Great White Fleet operated by the United Fruit Company of New York. We were on board ahead of schedule of departure and had enough time to unpack our bags before the ship cleared the docks. Our well appointed staterobin was, by this time, as much a part Of us it was the remainder of the voyage the conveniences and comforts of which gave us the feeling that a restful and enjoyable cruise was ahead of IN. When we heard, "All visitors ashore, please," over the ship's loud speaking system, the gang plank was already being removed and the ship was in motion to clear the docks. From sailing time at 4 p. rn. to midnight, we were still within the bounds of the mighty Mississippi River, a matter 'of 100 miles or so before it finally empties into the Gulf of Mexico. All along this river business activities seem to buzz from every direction, and business operated and expedited therefrom only reminds you that the driver's rating as commercial means is by no means uncierestimatedi According to the U. S. Maritime regulations each ship is piloted into as well as, out of certain ports and harbors, and the., captain turns his ship over to the ;erating pilot until the ship has cleared the 7one. Because of the unusual length of the Mississippi River, one pilot operates the ship from the New Orleans docks to Pilot.
