The Vestnik is Here for You The Year 2000 marks the beginning of the 88th year of publication for the Vesntik. SPJST members believed then - just as now - in the necessity of effective and regular communication between all parts of the organization. In a very real way, the newspaper has been a builder of images and a shaper of opinions and attitudes about the fraternal activities, insurance and other benefits available to members. On a weekly basis, the Vesntik delivers news on a wide range of organizational and cultural topics. In addition, each issue provides SPJST members with a forum for sharing news and information about happenings at their local lodges and youth clubs. To ensure that your lodge gets the best possible coverage' in the Vestnik, please share your new items and advance notices with other Vestnik readers. The following guides will help to ensure that you look good in print: 1 The deadline for receiving news and photos for the following week's issue is Wednesday. To fax your news items, dial (254) 774 - 7447; or send E-mail to bvanicek@wm.com . or info @ spjst.com 2 In preparing your lodge reports and features, please include complete information. All stories submitted should be written legibly or typed. Also take care to check the spelling on names - people love to see their names in print especially when they are spelled cor-

4 In composing your stories, please feel free to be creative. Some of the most interesting lodge letters and features incorporate colorful quotes, descriptions and background information. 5 Regarding photographs in the Vestnik, clear black-and-white photographs make the best reproductions in the Vestnik. Realizing how difficult it is these days to even find black-andwhite film or processing, clear color photographs will produce equally well. Sometimes color photographs reproduce poorly in the Vestnik because once the color print is reproduced in black-and-white, everything that is red - or a shade of red - appears as black or a shade of gray. Certain studio portraits and Polaroid prints often possess heavy concentrations of red. This significantly lessens their reproductive clarity. 6 Be creative! People-oriented photos draw readers into your story. For instance, a shot of two dancers out on the floor will attract much more attention than a picture of two people standing in front of a wall. Submit your photographs with short, descriptive captions.

Look Your Best (Continued from page 1.)

7 Good contrast and an uncluttered background are also important for a good photo. When photographing people, it's especially important to be CLOSE to the subjects. People — typically the focal point of most photos — are more important than the background. Before you take a photograph, check the background and try different angles if possible. If necessary, move your subjects to avoid distractions. Light-colored backgrounds work best. 8 Take special care when shooting photographs of people outdoors. It's usually a good idea to use your flash attachment — especially on bright days — to fill in the harsh shadows caused by sunlight.

9 The Vestnik is your newspaper and is made available for you to use as a tool to promote fraternalism in your lodge and throughout the SPJST. It can also be an effective aid in recruiting new members. It can help boost the morale of active members. It can be used as a source of ideas for social and fraternal activities and as a source of information about the SPJST and its many fraternal insurance and financial products. 10 The Vestnik is always looking for feature stories about lodges, lodge members and special events that will appeal to the readership. Likewise, if you ever have any suggestions or questions about submitting your news and photos to the Vestnik, please call the Editor at 1 (800) 7277578 or (254) 773-1575. —SPJST-

Temple College Foundation seeks to develop relationships with SPJST When Temple Junior College opened its doors in 1926, five instructors and 97 students were there to usher in a new era in higher education for Central Texas. Now, 74 years later, Temple College has an enrollment of 3,300 with a full-time faculty of 90. From its humble beginnings — classes were conducted in the high school during the college's formative years — through today, Temple College has offered quality education at an affordable cost. The college strives to serve the needs of students with varying backgrounds and interests. Temple College is known for academic excellence and outstanding vocational and technical education programs. In a community like Temple, one of the things that brings quality to life is the ease with which various groups are able to work together on projects of mutual interest. We're proud of the fact that through the years, we've had a lot of SPJST members walk through our doors — as students, instructors and as as friends, working with the Temple College Foundation to enhance the quality of life in our community and throughout the region. We want to continue this excellent relationship in the Year 2000. If your goal is to pursue a baccalaureate or higher degree, Temple College is the point of access for numerous professional fields, including medicine, law, education, business, engineering, and the arts. Known for more than seventy years for its exceptional ability to prepare students for upper-level, university study, Temple College has consistently lived up to its reputation for academic excellence. If your interest is technical study,

Temple College offers numerous options leading to employment, with most programs of study offering meaningful "exit points" to the workplace with the opportunity to resume study at a later time to pursue more advanced certification or the completion of an Associate of Applied Science degree. Fields range from the Health Professions to Industrial Technologies, from Computer Information Systems and Computer Assisted Design to Criminal Justice, Management, and Office Technology. Our strengthening relationship with business and industry assures the competitiveness of our programs and increases the probability of employment. Temple College has enjoyed an annual placement rate for students completing technical programs of more than 95 percent. Something New for Year 2000

In an effort to broaden our appeal to SPJST members, the Temple College Foundation is planning a 14-day trip to Eastern Europe in August of 2000. This will be a fully escorted tour with expert guides and lectures at each major site, including Prague, Vienna and Budapest. The price per person will depend on the number of members in the tour group. We invite you to be a part of what promises to be a fun and educational trip. If you have an interest in going on this tour or other group travel, we want to hear from you. Please give me a call at (254) 2988592 or E-mail me at alumni@templejc.edu for more information. Sincerely yours, Dick Archer, Director of Institutional Advancement —SPJST-

SPJST finnurn ES In addition to providing affordable insurance couerage to its members, the SPJST also offers a quality annuity program. Please see page one for current interest rates. For more information, please contact gour local lodge sales representative or the SPJST Home Office at m 2800) 72?-7578.

State FAC extends greetings, posts notices for coming events Welcome to the year 2000, and welcome to all new lodge fraternal activities coordinator or "FAC" as you will be affectionately known. Oh, boy, you don't know what you're in for! What you are in for is "learning, growth, knowledge, meeting new people, discovering new ideas and working with all kinds of people to promote fraternalism in your lodge and lots of record keeping." All lodge fraternal activities coordinators will soon be receiving the 2000 Local Lodge Incentive Program (LLIP) Book entitled, "Good Values Never Change - The New Millennium." The book has been reformatted this year, with the help of several lodge and district FACs. I believe FACs who have been using the old book will find the new one more concise and beneficial to record keeping. In the fraternal department, we are in the CIM mode, or Continuous Improvement Methodology mode. We are always looking for faster, better and higher quality and standards. Your ideas are always, always encouraged and welcomed—even the critical ones. Now, I don't want to be slammed with phone calls everyday criticizing the programs, etc., (I get enough of that), but what I do encourage is your critical opinion in conjuncture with a solution to the challenge that you are addressing. My best ideas are never mine. I can't take credit for a single original idea in my life. I am ever so grateful for the many phone calls and suggestions that I receive, not only from lodge FACs, but from different lodge officer's positions as well. Your input is essential to continuous improvement for our benefits and programs. The State Tournaments have been set and the hosting lodges drawn. Here are the results for the year 2000. • "How Fast is Your Brain?"—The SPJST State Tarok Tournament, Saturday, February 19 at SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood, Texas. • "Time to Play It Straight," the SPJST State Straight Domino Tournament, Saturday, March 4 at SPJST Lodge 35, Elk, Texas. • "Time to Play '42' ", the SPJST State 42 Domino Tournament, Saturday, March 18 at SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis, Texas. • The SPJST State Horseshoe Tournament, Saturday, May 13 at the Temple Lions Park in Temple, Texas.

Congratulations to these hosting lodges. We look forward to working with them to provide a comfortable, fun and entertaining day making friends and playing serious games. Reminders Local lodge FACs, you must submit your fraternal services report by February 1, 2000. The form is the yellow one on page 12 of the 1999 Local Lodge Incentive Program (LLIP) Book. This form must still be submitted and is required from every lodge. Call me for assistance. This form is very, very important to our SPJST Society. Congratulations to the first three lodges to submit their end of the year reports: SPJST Lodge 28, East Bernard, submitted by Glenn Kaminsky; SPJST Lodge 155, Austin, submitted by Clarence Boriski; and SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor, submitted by Donna Pasemann. Very good, guys. Reminder to lodge secretaries: Please send the addresses of the new FACs and all lodge officers to the Secretary-Treasurer of the SPJST Supreme Lodge no later than January, 2000. It is very important that we be able to contact at least one lodge officer during the week between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Please provide work phone numbers, changes in zip codes or 911 addresses and especially new area codes. If you are on E-mail or have a web site address, please include that information as well. Communication between the lodge, district and state level is something that needs be constantly addressed. If we receive incomplete, incorrect or outdated address or contact information, it can literally take office hours of research to find the new information. Thank you for your cooperation. May I conclude in saying what I appreciate most about SPJST. The people. The uniqueness of everyone that I have met. I can't say that there are two SPJST members who are alike that I know of. Each one that I have met has something different to offer. Different personalities, different skills, abilities and talents, yet, as a whole, good, solid people of a like mind. Responsible citizens, caring individuals, dedicated to the ideals of the SPJST Society. So may I start out the year 2000 by saying, thank you for being who you are. 88, Houston reports on lodge, member activities Lodge

I hope you had a Happy New Year! The sky didn't fall and we all seem to still be here, and my computer still works. I'm thankful for that. The Blue Room Party in December was a great success with lots of people. The New Year's Eve party was quite nice, too. Blackeyed peas were served after 12 midnight and everyone had lots of fun.

Georgia and Gene Barcak have a new grandson. He was born on October 13, 1999 at Yoakum Community Hospital in Yoakum, Texas and weighed in at 8 pounds, 91/2 ounces and was 21-3/4 inches long. Quite a boy! He was born to Debbie Barcak Brogdon and Gary Brogdon. The other grandparents are Birdie and Leroy Brogdon and greatgrandmother is Mary Barcak of Praha, Texas. Congratulations to all of you. Deaths are always sad to report, but we have had two over the holidays. William P. McCaskill, a member of the Men's Club, passed away on Wednesday, December 29th and was buried on Monday, January 3rd. Lillian Finn passed away on Friday, December 31st and was buried on Sunday, January 2nd at Pearland, Texas. She was a member of the Birthday Club. We will miss these folks. It is difficult to lose loved ones, but particularly so at this time of year. Who Is It? He was born in Kountz, Texas on March 9, 1919. After several residences — from Brownsville, Texas to New Orleans, Louisiana — and after attending several different schools, he graduated from high school in Dayton, Texas. Later, he came to Houston where he attended business school and worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad in the administrative offices until he entered the Air Force in 1942. In the meantime, he married and is the father of five children — four daughters and one son. While in the service, he spent two tours overseas, including one year in Thule, Greenland and three years in Japan. As Base Sergeant Major, he was in Personnel Administration. He retired from the Air Force in 1965 at the Little Rock Air Force Base. For a while he managed a fast food restaurant and later worked as purchasing agent for a hotel. He retired from the railroad in 1985. He became a member of SPJST and immediately became involved in Lodge 88, Houston. He joined the Men's Club, the Entertainment Committee and the Auditing Committee. He was President of the Men's Club for seven years and Vice President for five years. He worked with the Fiesta Club party on behalf of the Men's Club with proceeds donated to the Lodge. He also served as a delegate for two SPJST Conventions. He will celebrate his 81st birthday in March, 2000. Who is it? He is Tom Marsh, who is married to Lydia. In 1985 the attended the 50th reunion of his high school in Dayton, Texas. Lydia Hendrick just happened to be there. Both by that time widowed, they were married in December, 1985. Tom has four daughters, Claudia Ann, Rebecca Ann, Cynthia Ann, Elizabeth Ann and one son, Gregory Lowe. We know you have done a lot for the lodge, Tom, and it is appreciated. The person who has not struggled with difficulties cannot know the joy of genuine success. Fraternally, Flo Orsag, Vice President —SPJST-
