Supreme Lodge to pursue non-profit status for Library, Archives, Museum "

Museumsare the unique Museums keepers of the past. They act as safeguards for the cultural resources of our human heritage. From the chaos and conflict of today's world, the museum will hold the collections that tell us today and tomorrow who we are and where we came from." This quote is part of one of several displays adorning walls at the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum (LAM) in Temple. The Supreme Lodge, at their January 11-13 meeting, voted to take such steps as necessary to establish a non-profit corporation to promote the growth and development of the SPJST LAM.

Exciting Prospects "I'm excited," expressed Supreme Lodge Chairman Matt Vanek of Victoria. "We've been working on this for twenty years. This week's actions signal a new era of growth and development for our Library, Archives and Museum." Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir agrees. "Once the non-profit organization is in place, it opens a whole range of growth opportunities. "Operating as a 501 (c) (3) organization, the LAM will be able to receive taxdeductible donations, charitable bequests and apply for various grants to fund a variety of educational and cultural projects."

"This week's actions signal a new era of growth and development for our Library, Archives and Museum."

The far-reaching decision was the result of two actions. The first was a motion made by District Three Director Johnnie Krizan to implement the most economical means of establishing the Library, Archives and Museum as a separate, non-profit entity. The motion was seconded by District Five Director Louis Hanus. The second initiative, that the SPJST establish a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization to administer the growth and development of the Library, Archives and Museum, was presented by Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir and seconded by Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas. In each case, Supreme Lodge members voted to support the motions, with 11 votes cast in favor of the initiatives and one member, Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar, abstaining. Final ratification of the effort will reside with delegates to 27th SPJST Convention in Temple in June.

Thoughtful Process The growth and development of the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum has been the subject of considerable focus in recent years. Delegates to the 1992 SPJST Convention in Victoria established a committee to study and investigate the long-range plans for the SPJST LAM. Serving on that Committee were: Mildred Holeman, By-Laws Committee; Monta Foster, Finance Committee; Ben Jarma, Insurance Committee; and Angeline Kristinik, Publication Committee. Named by the Supreme Lodge was past District Seven Director Thelma Hrncir, who was named chairman of the LAM Committee. In their report to the 1996 SPJST Convention, the LAM Committee made the following recommendations: 1. The hiring of a museum consultant to recommend and implement desirable changes. 2. The accreditation of the LAM. (Continued on page 4.)

Non-Profit Status Just Got Closer

Good Move! At their January 11 - 13 meeting in Temple, the SPJST Supreme Lodge passed a progressive and far-reaching motion to establish a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization to support the growth and development of the SPJST Archives, Library and Museum. Delegates to the 2000 Convention in Temple will vote on whether or not to ratify the initiative. This week's cover story reports on the actions relating to the historic decision. The following text, which appeared in the November 16, 1999 Vestnik editorial, helps to further illustrate how the SPJST Supreme Lodge non-profit initiative is right for the times. A Foundation to Build On Nonprofit corporations are flourishing and growing at a pace never seen before in the United States, says a recent IRS publication, Statistics of Income Bulletin. Charities, foundations and other nonprofit organizations "represent an important and growing force in the economy and this will continue over the next decade." Revenues of all tax-exempt organizations classified as 501 (c) (3) groups totaled 12.4 percent of the economy in 1995, the IRS report stated. This is more than double the total 20 years earlier. Just to clarify things: The SPJST does not operate under section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. As a fraternal benefit society, we are considered a 501 (c) (8) organization. Without question, that is a real plus: It provides our tax-exempt status. On the other hand, our capacity to accept tax-deductible donations and grants is limited to our Scholarship Program. Operating as a 501 (c) (3) corporation, an SPJST Foundation could receive tax-deductible donations, charitable bequests and apply for various grants to fund a variety of philanthropic projects, including, but not limited to a Statewide Family Recreation Center, Endowed Scholarship Program and other worthy cultural and service-oriented projects.

(Please note that the recent Supreme Lodge recommendation relates specifically to the Library, Archives and Museum.) It gets better. There's a growing company out there called GreaterGood.com which is bringing together the explosive economic growth of the Internet with the increasing desire to "give back" to the charitable institutions that make our world a better place. Already, online shoppers - and in the not too distant

retailers, you automatically support your not-for-profit's mission - at no additional cost to you or the organization. Unlike some fundraising methods, a non-profit partnership with GreaterGood.com costs the 501 (c) (3) organization nothing to set-up or maintain. All back-end services, including transaction and payment processing, shipping, customer service, and reporting, are taken care of by GreaterGood.com and the retailer.

The innovations taking place in communications and in the marketplace these days are truly amazing! There's no other word for it. We can be first-string players in this new environment. We can provided that we learn the rules of the game and demonstrate the heart and drive that it takes to get involved. A recent article in the online monthly newsletter, 501 (c) (3), states that all kinds of organizations, including cultural groups political groups, schools of all kinds are reforming their own operations to fit within the nonprofit structure. "Foundations, trusts and other types of philanthropic organizations have long known of the benefits of the tax-exempt structure and with the growth in the economy, comes more and more types seeking tax exemption for their charity." Part of this growth - and this an educated guess - may be due to the fact that the IRS has expanded the taxexempt sector and is providing voluminous information to the public on how to form tax-exempt groups. At the same time, the IRS has wisely become increasingly vigilant in pursuit of hucksters seeking to evade tax payments by posing as nonprofit groups in order to take monies in an illegal way. An SPJST non-profit corporation? It's definitely worth considering. It's got great potential and the capacity to be a real rallying point for a dynamic fraternal program in the 21st Century ... But, as we know, new ideas aren't always welcome with open arms. More often than not, it takes time and encouragement for people to embrace progressive approaches to old challenges. As conscientious planners and builders, let's examine and communicate what it would take to establish a truly stellar 501 (c) (3) organization and the many ways it could benefit SPJST and those we seek to serve. As famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright once said, "The thing

always happens that you really believe in; and the belief in a thing makes it happen."

future that will probably include most of us - can support the causes we care about by shopping online. Here's how it works: GreaterGood.com builds, markets and manages "online shopping villages" where at least 5 percent of every purchase benefits the non-profit's cause. Each online shopping village includes a broad assortment of brand-name merchandise offered by leading Internet retailers, such as Avon, J.C. Penney and Hickory Farms - to name but a few. When you shop at one of these on-line

We Can Do It . In order to be effective, the (nonprofit) organization cannot keep its public at arm's length. Broad involvement of its public at all levels of operation is absolutely necessary to achieve effective nonprofit administration." -Thomas Wolf Managing a Nonprofit Organization in the Twenty-First Century -SPJST-

Non-profit in sight (Continued from page 1.)

3. Maintenance and improvement of public relations. 4. Professional training for the curator and assistants. 5. Networking with other museums. 6. Continuing efforts to keep the museum alive, dynamic, and creative — even visionary. "I feel very positive about the recent action taken by the Supreme Lodge concerning the LAM and commend them on taking this progressive action to improve and upgrade our present library, archives and museum," said Sister Hrncir. At the 1996 convention, our LAM Committee made six recommendations, the sixth being, "Continuing efforts to keep the museum alive, dynamic, and creative — even visionary. "I feel this action to achieve nonprofit status for the LAM is truly a step in the right direction. I hope the board will continue to support and promote this new idea and truly make our LAM the jewel of Texas," said Sister Hrncir.

Fast-Track Efforts in Motion The Supreme Lodge is taking the fast track in terms of bringing the new non-profit organization to the membership. "Before the Lodge Officers Workshop in February, we anticipate that we will have completed and filed all of the necessary paperwork to charter the non-profit organization," said Legal Advisor Kacir. If all goes according to schedule, delegates to the r

27th SPJST Convention in Temple in June will vote to ratify the new nonprofit LAM. "Based on the merits of the project, we feel confident that we will be able to obtain the non-profit designation. There, of course, will be a waiting period before the Internal Revenue Services offers its determination," said Brother Kacir. According to the museum's brochure, a major goal of the LAM is to preserve the Czech cultural heritage by teaching Czech history and traditions. It also stands as a memorial to the pioneer forefathers and mothers who settled Texas. Credit goes to past SPJST Supreme Lodge President Nick A. Morris for his work in starting the SPJST Library collection and to Otto Hanus for his excellent work as the LAM's first curator. The lion's share of thanks for the collection goes to SPJST members and friends of the Society who donated the thousands of artifacts and volumes on display. The SPJST LAM has been in its present location at the SPJST Home Office since 1971. Curator Dorothy Pechal, assisted by Sandra Dubcak, maintain the various collections and provide museum weekday tours and on weekends by special arrangement. "We've reached a critical point in the development of the LAM," said Supreme Lodge Vice President Leonard Mikeska. "Step One was setting up the museum. Step Two was moving into the current space. Step Three is all about maximizing our growth potential — which is considerable." "The sky's the limit," says Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas, who seconded the motion to pursue non-profit status. "To do nothing would be limiting ourselves to what we have now. I can see this being the start of something big for the SPJST, its members and the people of Texas." —SPJST-

Lodge 6, Cottonwood members enjoy New Year's Eve social

Everyone that stayed till the end enjoyed a bowl of the traditional blackeyed peas for luck. Thanks to all who came out to celebrate together. Look forward to perhaps doing this again at the next millennium (some say the millennium is the year 2001.) Fraternally, Stella Perez, Reporter

Hi! We had a fairly nice crowd of 25 to 30 people at our New Year's Eve party at Lodge 6, Cottonwood. There was lots and lots of good food. Some did not get to come out as a lot of sickness was going on around the community. Everyone enjoyed themselves. There was some straight domino playing, then eating, along with some "42" domino playing. Then we could eat some more. There was also a taroky game going on. Some of us brought in the new year playing "chickenfoot". That is a fun game to play also. All in all, the night was very enjoyable with fellowship and food.

6/VESTNIK—Wednesday, January 26, 2000 January 2 at 2 p.m. by Brother Al Soukup, President. The youth led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance. Roll call of officers was had with all being present and it was reported that there were 28 members present. Lodge Reports Sister Barbara Jean Hykel, Secretary, was called upon for the reading of the minutes from our last meeting, which were approved as read. The treasurer's report was given by Treasurer Sister Peggy Dobecka, which was approved as given. Sister Peggy also gave her Youth Club report a bit later, which she will probably put in the youth section of the Vestnik. Brother George Straten, Financial Secretary. gave a short report. He reported a transfer from Lodge 66 into our lodge. Welcome to Jerry and Theresa M. Suttle. Brother Straten also read a thank you note from Coy Schier, thanking our lodge for donating towards his medical expense. Sunshine Committee, Sister Hattie Kaska, gave her report. She reported sending sympathy cards to the Betty Zapalac family and to Milton and Irene Peterson, upon the death of their granddaughter, Haley Peterson. Our deepest sympathies are extended to these two families upon their loss. From One George to Another . Our new Vice President, Brother George Sulak, got up and made a nice speech. He thanked all that voted for him, as well as recognizing all other officers and sales representatives of the lodge. He said he was really looking forward to working with each and everyone. He went on to mention that another George had gotten in touch with him since he had been elected as vice president, but I did not get all that information — something to do with Governor George Bush — and Brother Sulak can tell it so well, just ask him to do it. Welcome, aboard, George Sulak! New FAC Announces Quilt Project There is one other new officer in our lodge this year, Sister Irene Schiemenz, Fraternal Activities Coordinator. Welcome aboard! Sister Irene welcomed all to this first meeting of 2000 and thanked all that voted for her and that she would do her best at filling these shoes. Her first project mentioned sounded exciting to everyone. She wants all members to do a quilt block all of which will be put together by her. She is wanting to get two quilts done by picnic time in July to have one in our prize drawing and one in our auction. These quilt pieces can be embroidered, hand painted, pieced or whatever, but they need to be in a 12 1/2 inch by 12 1/2 inch square. The two quilts will need a total of 60 of these squares, so get busy. She will need them by the June meeting on the 4th—no later. Sister Irene, FAC, also brought up about the exchange of gifts at our meeting. It was voted in that ladies will bring a gift for a lady and men will bring a gift for a man. This way, she said that the men would not get a dish towel for a lady. The limit of $2 to $2.50 is still good price wise and she strongly suggested to get creative on the men's gifts. Lodge Hosts State Taroky Tourney Sister Irene also mentioned that our

Lodge 6 will be hosting the State Taroky Tournament on February 19, 2000 with barbecue plates served for lunch. She asked for lots of workers and players as well. For the social on January 7, Sister Irene mentioned that she and Brother Robert Schiemenz would be making homemade chili, which would be served. I was still sick myself and did not get to make this social, but Brother Ray Perez went and enjoyed himself with eating chili and playing dominos. He even brought me some chili home and I enjoyed some a few days later. Thanks to these two. It was delicious. Brother Jerry Kucera, Districts Two and Three Field Representative, spoke to all briefly. He mentioned that our lodge would receive the Platinum Award for 1999. He went on to say that the year 2000 was here and wants 100 applications as a goal for this year. He also gave his thanks for electing him as a delegate to the convention. Brother Johnnie Krizan, District Three Director, spoke briefly, mentioning our New Year's Eve celebration at the lodge. He said something about the new Vice President, Brother George Sulak, turning out the lights when it came midnight, but it backfired or something and Brother Sulak did not know which light switch, so we all still had lights. February 26 Workshop, Banquet Brother Krizan encouraged all to participate by making a trip to Ennis, Texas on the last Saturday in February, being February 26. This is the Officers' Workshop and Incentive Banquet held at Lodge 25, Ennis, Texas. He went on to mention that the District Three Spring Meeting would be on April 30 at Lodge 66, Elm Mott, Texas and would be the last district meeting before the state convention. Brother Johnnie Krizan brought up about the Easter party and on the sending out of cards. It was voted that Brother Krizan would handle it again as he was doing a fine job. The Easter party will coincide with our meeting in April 2 meeting. This will also be the date of the SPJST, Inc. annual meeting. Youth Club Selling Cookbooks The Cottonwood Youth Club is still selling cookbooks at $11 each, I think, and when they are gone that will be the end of our 100th Anniversary Cookbooks. They have a few left, so order from any member of Lodge 6, Cottonwood. Those with January birthdays at our meeting were Brothers Ray Perez and Al Soukup and Sister Barbara Jean Hykel. A happy birthday to these folks and to all with a birthday this month. The $5 door prize was drawn with the lucky winner being Sister Hattie Kaska. Congratulations! An $8 progressive door prize was drawn with Pamela Lovecky not present. Our meeting was then adjourned until Sunday, February 6 at 2 p.m. with the meal being served by another one of our good cooks, the Jerry Kucera family. Hats Off to Robert! I want to mention that I noticed on the front page of the January 12, 2000 Vestnik that Brother Robert Dobecka was "Tops in District Three." Congratulations, Robert! You were

6, Cottonwood "membership quilt" project in the works Lodge

Hi! As the newly elected Fraternal Activities Coordinator for the year 2000, I am very excited and looking forward to making this a very busy and fun time for Lodge 6. Membership Quilt Our first project is for every member of Lodge 6 to make a 12 1/2" by 12 1/2" block with your name somewhere on the block. I will collect all of the blocks, assemble them into two quilt tops and then machine quilt them into quilts. One quilt will be awarded in a prize drawing at our July 16 picnic and the other will be auctioned at the picnic. If I get more than 60 blocks, we will have more quilts for the auction. Lodge 6 now has 700 members so if you are a member of Lodge 6 and are not coming to the monthly meetings, please come to the February meeting or any monthly meeting or call Irene Tobola Schiemenz at (254) 829-2255 for more information about the quilt project. I must have all of the blocks by June 4 so that I will have enough time to complete the project. You can give me your block as soon as you finish it or mail it to Irene Schiemenz, 523 Wagoner Rd, Waco, Tx 76705. The sooner the better! The quilts will include a block with the text "SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood Texas Picnic (or Auction) July 16, 2000." I would like to thank the Lodge 6 members for their support in this project. Fraternally, Irene Tobola Schiemenz Fraternal Activities Coordinator —SPJST-

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Benita Walzel, Louise Newman, Emma Kujawa and Dorothy Kuban for baking the hams. I would also like to thank Darlene Blinka for the sausage. After happy hour we had a delicious steak dinner cooked by Art and David Ramirez. Woefully, the steaks had to be cooked outside in the rain. but these guys are such good sports, they didn't seem to mind at all. The full dinner included steaks, baked potatoes, salad and for dessert, a beautiful sheet cake half white and half chocolate. David Ramirez was Santa Claus and his wife, Martha was Mrs. Claus. Al children in attendance received gifts from Santa and ate pizza. The adults had a Chinese auction after we had installation of officers. The officers for the year 2000 are as follows:

All officers were present at the meeting except for two trustees. We then held a moment of silence for sick or departed members. Walter Parsons, a member, passed away. I understand Walter worked at our old lodge on Arkansas Lane. Also, not a member, but a good friend, George Leikham, Jr. passed away. He was a member of several fraternal lodges in Arlington and was a delightful person We knew George and his, wife Anna, through game night and our thoughts and prayers are with his family. His death was a shock and he will be missed. The minutes were read by our Secretary Daniel Rosnovsky. No discrepancies were noted in the minutes. The bar and kitchen reports were offered by Johnnie followed by the bingo and treasurer's reports given by Ken Cepak for the months of November and December. For the year, we acquired nine new members. Three were accepted during this meeting. Two of our new members came to the meeting, Art Ramirez and Alfredo Gonzalez. We were glad to have these men there. Lodge Business Discussed Under new business, we voted on Johnnie's thought that we give him the opportunity to purchase prizes to be given away at bingo. This fine idea was passed. We also voted on sending Jerry Mikus to a fishing tournament for the deaf. Good luck, Jerry! A committee was appointed by Johnnie to determine whether the mortgage on our hall should be paid in full or not sometime

this year. The committee consists o Robert Sill, Ken Cepak and Daniel Rosnovsky. It will be looked into and discussed in further meetings. As its name suggests, the purchaser of an SPJST Lone Pay Life certificate makes only one premium payment, resulting in a paid-up certificate. For years, it has been a favorite plan for parents and grandparents seeking to enroll their children and grandchildren in the SPJST. However, did you know that a Lone Pay Life certificate can be issued to individuals up to age 80? As you would expect, at the older issue ages, it can be expensive; however, it could be just the thing .for older members who want to buy additional permanent insurance. For example, a female at age 70 can purchase additional paid-up insurance at the rate of $570 per $1,000 of coverage with a minimum purchase of $5,000 coverage. The Lone Pay Life certificate may also be of interest to anyone wishing to make a gift of life insurance to a college, church, charitable organization or individual. Universal Life. Tailored to Meet Your Needs. Here are some of the features of SPJST's Universal Life contract, which we call our "SPJST Flexible Protector Plan": •Step 1: You elect an amount of insurance

and select Death Benefit Option A or B (as described below). You can also select the amount of premium you want to pay and make the initial payment. Step 2: As each premium is received by SPJST, a small expense charge is deducted and the balance goes into your cash value account.

Step 3: At the beginning of each month, a charge for the life insurance protection is deducted from the cash value to pay the monthly life insurance protection costs. Step 4: Interest at current rates is credited

to the fund each month.

Coverage is Flexible. You have a choice of two death benefits, Option A or Option B: Option A: Level Death Benefit. The death benefit is made up of life insurance and the cash value. Initially, this benefit is, equal to the face amount. However, current tax law states that there must always be a certain minimum proportion of life insurance In the certificate. Therefore, as

the cash value approaches the face amount, the death benefit increases automatically. Option B : Increasing Death Benefit. The death benefit is equal to the face amount of life insurance protection plus the money in the cash value account.

Currently, Anna Johnson has it and Linda Homer said and she, her husband and mother inlaw are all down with it. To all of you, get well soon and hope to see you at the meeting time next week. Birthday wishes go out to my older sister, Lillie Kosarek, who was born on New Year's and this year celebrated one of those birthdays with a zero on the end. Sympathy goes out to my brother in-law, Charlie, whose younger brother, Leslie Kosarek of Houston, died recently. Burial was in Dubina, Texas. May his soul rest in peace. Mary Pavey's niece, Mary Kay called Jeanie Mason over the holidays to extend Mary's greetings to everyone. Mary is still in a nursing home in Brownsboro, Alabama. The time is right to make new friends . • Fraternalism and fraternal life insurance are both rooted in the principle that each of us has a responsibility to each other. Going back to the days of the Roman Empire, there were societies organized to unify groups and provide financial aid in time of sickness and death. Even then, there was a keen awareness of the cruelties and hardships that death brings to families. These early societies had another purpose. They recognized the need of human beings for companionship. For that reason, they provided a way for people to meet in friendly gatherings — where selfishness and prejudice were suppressed and the principles of brotherhood were nurtured, thereby establishing abetter understanding among the members. You belong, too! Consider attending your next lodge or district meeting. Remember, "The time is right to make new friends."

Parents and youth met in San Antonio on Saturday around 10 a.m. at the Museum of Texan Cultures. It was very interesting to find that under the exhibit for the Czech culture in Texas that the SPJST organization was mentioned. They even had a video showing the Beseda dance being performed. After the guided.tour, everyone was then free to tour the rest of the museum on their own. After viewing all that the museum had to offer, we then walked over to Hemisphere Park and enjoyed a picnic lunch. After a relaxing lunch under the trees while enjoying the beautiful waterfalls in the park, we then took a ride up in the Tower of Americas. Everyone enjoyed the beautiful view of San Antonio form way up high. Then, after a long day of fun and cultural education, we headed to the Sumner Suites Hotel on the Riverwalk, where District Six members spent the night. Everyone was free to spend the rest of th trip at their leisure. Members enjoyed dining out and strolling along the Riverwalk. Some youth took in swimming at the hotel swimming pool. On Sunday, members continued to enjoy all the Riverwalk had to offer. Some even visited the Alamo for the first time. Afterwards, everyone checked out and departed for home. Fayette County is known as the cradle of Czech immigration, for this is the picturesque area the Czech immigrants settled in and began their new lives in America. Of the 218 members in attendance at the state meeting, 27 were from the CHS of Fort Bend County. Fort Bend County will be well represented on the Executive committee of the CHS of (Continued on page 23.)
