person's loue for spouse and children and concern ouer their welfare are good reasons to keep one's life insurance contract in good standing. But sometimes, even the most well-planned insurance program becomes outdated. For that reason, it's a good idea to occasionally review your certificate and see if it still fits your changing needs. That's where an SPJST sales representative can help. When you're ready to review your present coverage, give your local lodge sales representative a call. If you're not sure about who to talk to, please contact the SPJST Insurance Department at 1 (800) 727-7578 and they canput you in touch with a sales representative in your area.

Good Job! SPJST Youth Club officers from across the state met at Providence Hospital in Waco on Saturday, January 22 for their annual workshop. The emphasis was on parliamentary procedure and how to conduct an effective meeting. "Sometimes it's taken for granted that everybody knows how to conduct an effective meeting," said State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny, who conceived and coordinated the event. "It isn't difficult - but you've got to understand the basics. "Fundamental practices like making a motion, putting it up for discussion and voting have got to come as second nature if, you really expect your group to make progress," she explained. Getting back to the basics: It was an excellent and practical idea for a workshop. Many of us, I know, have struggled at one time or another with meetings that start late, meetings that run late, meetings that go off track and meetings whose decisions and assigned

actions are forgotten minutes after their conclusion. Learning the importance of listening, discussing and disagreeing respectfully are key elements of a meeting conducted according to guidelines of effective parliamentary procedure. How much can you learn in a day? As we learned on Saturday, you can cover a lot of ground - if you put your mind to it. With regards to the youth workshop, to enhance the experience, participants received some excellent course materials relating to conducting effective meetings and planning that they will be able to apply in their youth clubs. The day is coming when our young people - many, perhaps, who participated in the workshop - will be the leaders of our Society. We are indeed fortunate to have a conscientious State Youth Director, dedicated adult youth leaders and supportive parents who are planting the seeds now that, with care and nurturing, will yield a bountiful harvest in the years ahead. Keep up the good work.

"We are planting the seeds now that, with care and nurturing, will yield a bountiful harvest in the years ahead."

Universal Life. Tailored to Meet Your Needs. Universal Life has been called many things: • The Plan of the Future • A Computer-Age Plan • A New Concept in Life Insurance A Plan Custom-Designed for Each Insured It's all of these things. Here are some of the features of SPJST's Universal Life contract, which we call our "SPJST Flexible Protector Plan": Step 1: You elect an amount of insurance and select Death Benefit Option A or B (as described below). You can also select the amount of premium you want to pay and make the initial payment.

Step 2: As each premium is received by

Step 3: At the beginning of each month, a charge for the life insurance protection is deducted from the cash value to pay the monthly life insurance protection costs.

Step 4: Interest at current rates is credited to the fund each month.

SPJST, a small expense charge is deducted and the balance goes into your cash value account.

Coverage is Flexible. You have a choice of two death benefits, Option A or Option B: Option A: Level Death Benefit. The death

benefit is made up of life insurance and the cash value. Initially, this benefit is equal to the face amount. However, current tax law states that there must always be a certain minimum proportion of life insurance in the certificate. Therefore, as

the cash value approaches the face amount, the death benefit increases automatically.

Option B : Increasing Death Benefit. The death benefit is equal to the face amount of life insurance protection plus the money in the cash value account.

January 1, 2000 Dear Madam Secretary: Please enter the following for a bylaw change: The officers are to be paid by a salary base of approximately $20,000 plus commissions based on the dollar volume of their department. The commissions will be paid a certain rates for each million dollars of volume and will go on a sliding scale as the volume increases. There will be NO CAP on the amount of commission that can be earned. When the volume gets to a certain point, the commissions will be low, but will CONTINUE to be earned.

The writer feels that the above approach will ensure that the SPJST will be run on a business basis and will run as most businesses are today. There will be no excuses for a rating dropping as the officer will not be handed a dole as they are today. Thank you, Bobby Hoelscher Lodge 24, Cyclone —SPJST-

1/24/00 Convention Delegates: Add to or change to read: It is mandatory of all Lodges, that all Sales Representative who have made the required number of meetings of the Lodge to qualify to go to the convention as a delegate, be automatically a delegate. If more sale representative is eligible than a Lodge needs, then an election is used to decide, who goes as a delegate. Reason: The Sales Representative is the ones who know the structure of the SPJST and it's goals. If it was not for the Sales Representatives the Lodge would not get members, and also not qualify for the incentive awards, thusly the Lodge who does not get new members, just fade away. What's an Annuity? Many people buy homes even though they have no intention of ever living in them. Instead, they lease the property and collect rent at regular intervals. They have made an investment of capital for the sole purpose of producing a regular income. An annuity is a similar kind of arrangement ... The basic purpose of an annuity is to distribute a regular, guaranteed lifetime income through a scientific liquidation of invested capital. Annuities start with a sum of money that has either been paid in a lump sum (single pay annuities) or has been accumulated through payments over a number of years (deferred annuities). In planning for retirement, a person may want to "send money ahead" by making regular payments to an annuity years before retirement. At retirement, the annuity will be ready to make payments back to supplement retirement income ... — Introduction to Life Underwriting, Dearborn o R&R Newkirk, Dearborn Financial Publishing, Inc.

130, Dallas report of recent, coming events Lodge

Where does the time go? Honestly, for two months, I have tried to jot down a few words about our camp out at Fort Parker and also what has been going on at Lodge 130. With birthdays, Thanksgiving, our trip to Akron, Ohio to spend Christmas with our oldest son, Daryl, and his family and with the stupendous New Year's celebration with all our other children, I was exhausted by the time our new

10/VESTNIK—Wednesday, February 2, 2000 millennium came around! But anyway, we did have a truly wonderful time at the camp out, with 25 members and friends present. We were pleased to have our District Three Director Johnnie Krizan come for lunch on Saturday and for spending the evening campfire with us (thanks, too, Johnnie, for your visit at our January meeting.) The weather was absolutely perfect and our meals and activities seemed to please everyone. We will have our next camp out at Fort Parker again on November 3, 4 and 5. I hope that it will be possible for our friends from the new Mexia lodge and also Supreme Lodge officers and their families to come visit. Johnnie could not believe that we have been having these camp outs for over 25 years, but we have the pictures to prove it! Czech Dancers to Perform The Beseda dancers made at trip to San Angelo to perform in front of the Czech House. And they did perform regardless of the strong sandstorm, high winds and cold weather! They were well received. Christmas at Fort Concho is still being held and we were pleased to be there. Other events the Texas Czech Beseda Dancers will be involved in this year will be the Texas Folklife Festival in San Antonio in June and a Dallas International Festival on July 15 at the Meyerson Symphony Hall. Our election of officers has been held and following is our slate of officers for this year: President Keith Shinn First Vice President John Vrla Secretary Stanley Vrla Treasurer Eugene Parma Beseda Director Martha Vrla Flag Bearer Billy Shinn Fraternally, Rose Ann Parma —SPJST-

A person's love for

spouse and children and concern over their welfare are good reasons to keep one's life insurance contract in good standing. But sometimes, even the most well-planned insurance program becomes outdated For that reason, it's a good idea to occasionally review your certificate and see if it still fits your changing needs. That's where, an SPJST sales representative can help. When you're ready to review your present coverage, give your local lodge sales representative a call. If you're not sure about who to talk to, please contact the SPJST Insurance Department at 1 (800) 727-7578 and they can put you in touch with a sales representative in your area.

Lodge Letters (Continued from page 11.) Women's Shelter. This was a result of Telephone Committee Marian Peterek and Donna Havranek who called every member as a reminder just prior to the meeting. Good job, ladies! Of course, we have to brag, like Lillie Hajek said her great-granddaughter was one of the featured on the front page of People Section of the Corpus Christi Caller. Her name is Cassie Hajek. We are always proud when our members make the news and excel in something.

We lost one of our members, Clara Valla. She has moved back to Nebraska with her family. Want to hear an amusing story? Ask Rosalie Williams and Dorothy McCoy about a gift in the wrong mailbox. Or ask Milly Elzner the story about her sweater at the Polish Club party. These are just some happenings lately. Pat Dziadek spent the holidays in England. Seems they do things differently than in Texas. It was an interesting trip. There were five door prizes and the winners were Rosalie Williams, Anna Marie Moss, Milly Elzner, who won two prizes, and Lillian Covill. We thank the donors for the prizes. I didn't get their names

agenda for a youth club meeting and explained its importance. Next, the workshop focus turned to motions and how members get their say. Vestnik Editor Brian Vanicek discussed the eight steps needed to process a main motion, which included obtaining the floor and handling the motion. He also discussed five types of voting. The morning session ended with Michael and Barbara discussing the youth club officer positions and youth club committees. For lunch, participants and adults visited while eating pizza, chips and cookies. The workshop presenters broke the participants into groups of six after lunch. Their first activity was a game called "Piece by Piece." The game illustrated the importance of teamwork in youth clubs. Following the game, seven volunteers demonstrated the procedure for handling a main motion. The group's final activity was a project on handling a main motion. Each group presented their motion, debated the motion and voted on the motion while the workshop presenters and participants critiqued the groups. The workshop concluded with door prizes.

SPJST Youth Program

Celebrate Texas Independence!

(First in a Series of Four) According to A History of the SPJST compiled by the late Supreme Lodge President Nick A. Morris, the SPJST youth program began as early as 1937 when a youth group on the lodge level was formed at Lodge 25, Ennis. The second such youth group was formed at Lodge 88, Houston in 1948. The third oldest was at Lodge 4, Hallettsville in 1953. The fourth and fifth oldest youth groups were organized at Lodge 66, Waco and Lodge 84, Dallas. Both were formed in 1954. It is interesting to note that these first five youth clubs are still very much active in the SPJST Youth Program. A driving force behind SPJST's Youth Movement in the early 1950s was Birdie Hilsher Pech. In a Vestnik column that Sister Pech

wrote in 1953, she says, "If you think that the grass is just a little greener on the other side of the fence, better think twice. Our SPJST has all of the green grass—it is up to us to keep it watered now and keep it growing—bigger and better all the time. Keep our youth and keep them entertained for a greater future of our SPJST, for without them, we would perish as grass would die without water." Forty-seven years later, these words still ring true. The purpose of the SPJST Youth Department continues to be twofold: first, to build character among the younger members and secondly, to involve our young people in activities that will prepare them for leadership positions at all levels of our Society. —SPJST-
