What You Know (Continued from page 2.) Among the other items discussed were procedures for qualifying members to serve as delegates to the Convention and the Supreme Lodge's proposed name change for the Society. Please refer to page 9 (Supreme Lodge Minutes) for information relating to this Supreme Lodge recommendation. On a related note, State Field Manager Gene McBride announced during the meeting his intent to seek the position of Supreme Lodge Vice President at the June Convention. Brother McBride, who has been with the SPJST for 21 years, is the past President of Lodge 25, Ennis and the current president of Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy. In making his announcement, Brother McBride indicated that he had conferred with Supreme Lodge Vice President Leonard

Mikeska, who said that he would not be a candidate for the Vice President's position in June. Brother Mikeska, who has been employed by the SPJST for 41 years, has been a member of the Supreme Lodge for 31 years. District Three plans to host at least two more delegate meetings prior to the convention. The next meeting will be March 29 at Lodge 84, Dallas. As a fraternal benefit society, the SPJST is involved in the business of life. From selling life insurance and annuities to providing opportunities for social interaction and community development. Men, women and children have a need for the kinds of services that our SPJST can provide. The long-term prosperity of the SPJST depends on our capacity and willingness to get involved, understand the issues and then respond accordingly. By truly looking out for the good of our fraternal Society, everyone's best interests can be served. —SPJST-

Howard B. Leshikar, President Slavonic Benevolent Order of Texas P.O.Box 100 Temple, TX 76503 Dear Howard B. Leshikar: This letter serves as a formal notice of your organization's Best's Rating after a thorough analysis of all current information shared with us. The rating will become effective on January 24. We ask that you do not publicly release the rating assignment prior to it becoming effective upon release to our subscribers via Best's ViewPoint, BestWire (our newswire service) and our e-Commerce service on the A.M. Best Internet site (www.ambest.com ). We have assigned a Best's Rating of B++ (Very Good) and Financial Size Category of VI. The rating of Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST) reflects the order's strong capitalization, conservatively invested asset portfolio, consistently profitable operating results and its good fraternal niche position. Partially offsetting these strengths are the continued declines in policies in force, and decline in membership. Of lesser concern is the society's exposure to interest rate risk and the geographic concentration of its mortgage loan portfolio. During our conference call on January 21, the areas of marketing and membership growth were the focus of our discussions. These areas have been of concern to us in the past, and remain so. The ability of fraternal society to grow its policies in-force and indirectly its membership base demonstrates the viability of a society going forward. The FIC program and the training and licensing of sales representatives shows a commitment by SPJST to develop a more professional field force capable of the needs based selling required to attract new, younger members. Going forward we will be monitoring the success of this field force in growing your membership and policy base. Please keep us updated on your progress on a quarterly basis, and this can be included with your statutory filing. To acknowledge the receipt of this letter and the assigned Best's Rating, we request that you sign and date the letter on the line provided and return it within three working days. If more convenient, our FAX number is 908-439-2237. Once we have received your acknowledgement, the rating will become effective in conjunction with its release to our subscribers. If the acknowledgment is not returned in the prescribed time frame, the rating will be released automatically. Under a separate cover, we will mail an invoice of the A.M. Best's Annual Rating Service Fee for your organization. In addition, your organization's Best's Rating and corresponding Best's Company Report will appear in the next edition of Best's Insurance Reports, Life/Health. A draft copy of your Best's Company Report has been sent to your designated rating contact for review prior to release to our subscribers. In closing, we sincerely appreciate the valuable assistance that you and your staff have given us. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact the analyst responsible for your company's rating, Richard D. McMillan, Financial Analyst at 5615. AMB#9606 Sincerely, Richard F. Life. Tailored to Meet Your Needs. Universal

Universal Life has been called many things: • The Plan of the Future • A Computer-Age Plan • A New Concept in Life Insurance • A Plan Custom-Designed for Each Insured It's all of these things. Here are some of the features of SPJST's Universal Life contract, which we call our "SPJST Flexible Protector Plan": Step 1: You elect an amount of insurance .and select Death Benefit Option A or B (as described below). You can also select the amount of premium you want to pay and make the initial payment. Step 2: As each premium is received by SPJST, a small expense charge is deducted and the balance goes into your cash value account.

Step 3: At the beginning of each month, a charge for the life insurance protection is deducted from the cash value to pay the monthly life insurance protection costs. Step 4: Interest at current rates is credited to the fund each month.

Coverage is Flexible. You have a choice of two death benefits, Option A or Option B: Option Pa Level Death Benefit. Lone Pay Life, It Isn't Just for Children. As its name suggests, the purchaser of an SPJST Lone Pay Life certificate makes only one premium payment, resulting in a paid–up certificate. For years, it has been a favorite plan for parents and grandparents seeking to enroll their children and grandchildren in the SPJST. However, did you know that a Lone Pay Life certificate can be issued to individuals up to age 80? As you would expect, at the older issue ages, it can be expensive; however, it could be just the thing for older members who want to buy additional permanent insurance. For example, a female at age 70 can purchase additional paid-up insurance at the rate of $570 per $1,000 of coverage with a minimum purchase of $5,000 coverage. The Lone Pay Life certificate may also be of interest to anyone wishing to make a gift of life insurance to a college, church, charitable organization or individual. For more information on the SPJST Lone Pay Life certificate or other financial products, please contact your local lodge sales representative.

87, Temple appreciates extra effort and the scrumptious feast Lodge

This is a belated report on the winter holiday party held by SPJST Lodge 87, on December 14, 1999. We had a scrumptious feast and were especially grateful to President Norma Alford who opted to prepare the main course herself despite the lodge's approval for the funds to buy it from one of the local restaurants. It certainly tasted 'better than any restaurant! We heartily enjoyed our gift giving round robin, and also collected food, gifts and cash donations for an SPJST family devastated by a fire just prior to our meeting. We also greeted our two youngest attendees with enthusiasm. Sister Bertha Capps was finally able to introduce her twin granddaughters in person. Welcome to Lodge 87 Katey and Haley Capps! The minutes were read by Secretary Ginny Prasatik and approved by the members. John Hejl, Treasurer, gave the balance in our bank account after deducting the cost of our meal. Frank Klinkovsky installed the reelected officers for 2000. They are: President Ted Marek Vice President Clarence Boriski Treasurer John Hejl Secretary/Reporter Ginny Prasatik It is heartwarming to know that we have acquired new members in 1999 through the combined efforts of Lewis Kuykendall and Ted Marek. Christi Circle of Women reports on February meeting Corpus

Twenty-seven members and four guests met at Sokol Corpus Christi February 3 for the monthly Circle of Women meeting and luncheon. Our guests were Clement Kasparek, Myles Marek, Duane McAlister and Dorothy Berner. Honorary member, Jerry Elzner, is included in the membership count. We were happy that he and Milly were able to make it safely home after driving to Chattanooga just in time to experience the blizzard that hit the last week of January. We received a post card from them dated January 26 from Joplin, Missouri where they were snow-bound in a motel en route home. Jerry did do some 20 mph driving on ice-slicked roads, but having lived in Alaska and Pennsylvania, took it in stride—unlike those of us living in sunny South Texas who have only seen snow twice in 60 years and driven on icy roads very little. It was good to see Evelyn Hruska Lovelace who lives in Kingsville. Evelyn is seldom able to attend meetings due to family obligations. She gave the Krouzek a very nice donation in lieu of being a hostess. Thank you, Evelyn. Among our missing members were Rose Huff and Pauline Novosad who were both ill last month, too. We are

S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 2 Open House S.P.J.S.T. No. 2 Rest Home in Needville, Texas held an open house on January 22, 2000 from 2 to 4 p.m. Introduction was delivered by Charles K. Pearce, Administrator and Verley Lewis, Assistant Director of Nursing. Honored was the oldest resident Mary Anders. Youngest resident was Cruz Forcado and the longest-term resident was Edmund Brandt. Exhibits and tours were held from 3 to 4 p.m. Refreshments were served to all. — Submitted by Barbara Syatek S.A.D.

Wednesday, February 16, 2000—VESTNIK/13 hoping to see them next month. Ella Simcik and Albertina Oakes were also ill. We wish them all a speedy recovery. Donna Havranek was in Atlanta, having flown to visit daughter, Debbie. Edna Voldan left the day of our meeting to attend a Junior Livestock Show in Jersey Village (just outside Houston). Granddaughter Ashley was showing a hog she raised. Edna hated missing our meeting and sent her regards, but could not disappoint Ashley. Several members' granddaughters entered animals in the Nueces County Junior Livestock Show and had their pictures in both the local and Robstown newspapers. Cassie Hayek, great-granddaughter of Lillie Hayek, was the essay winner and also had a grand champion rabbit. Lindsey Pavelka and Mary Elzner both received prizes for their entries. They are the granddaughters of Helen Pavelka and Della Elzner respectively. Congratulations to these young ladies and their grandmas. A large picture of Julie Kucera with her ballet group was in the Sunday paper. An aspiring ballerina, Julie is the granddaughter of Lillian Covill. A wedding engagement announcement and picture of Susannah Hayek also appeared. She is the granddaughter of Lillie Hayek. We wish them both our best. Betty Jurica flew to Cincinnati to see her new great-grandson. Andrew John Carroll was born January 5 to proud parents Frances Faye and Greg Carroll. Congratulations. Betty spent two days indoors viewing the snow storm before venturing out. Dorothy McCoy took a trip to Las Vegas and came home a winner. She wouldn't say how much she won, but it was enough to pay for a trip to Hawaii she has booked for April. If anyone deserved to win, it's Dorothy—for all the nice things she does for others. Dorothy brought the acknowledgement and thank you letter that she received from the Women's Shelter for our donations last month, which she delivered personally. We sang "Happy Birthday" to her as she was our only February birthday member present. Helen Pavelka took her picture for our scrap book. Helen also took a picture of the beautiful Valentine cake Mary Elzner brought for dessert. It was inscribed "Always love one another." After the many door prizes were given out, Rosalie Williams gave each lady a sweetheart cash lottery ticket attached to "The Legend of St. Valentines." That is just one of the many thoughtful things our members do that make our monthly meetings so special. I heard Mary Elzner say she had to stop on her way home to collect her $3 winnings. Dorothy McCoy announced she used most of the door prizes held in reserve and more are needed. So let's try to remember to bring a surprise to our March 2 meeting. See you then! P.S. Thanks to Helen Pavelka for writing last month's report. 1 was under the weather and my brain wasn't functioning. I knew Helen would do a good job and I appreciate it Fraternally, Anna Marie Moss, Reporter —SPJST-

poised to buy land for cultural center Group

by Nancy Dean Houston Chronicle Like a million other Texas, Effie Sojak Rosene grew up in Southwest Texas of Czech heritage. Her father arrived there as a youngster in 1908; her mother's family even earlier. Being a descendent of Czechs meant nothing to her, until both she and her husband, Bill, retired. On a whim, Effie convinced Bill to accompany her to a Czech heritage meeting in Hillje on February 28, 1995. That day would change their lives. For the first time, Rosene realized how much being and speaking Czech meant to her. Simultaneously, the idea of setting up a Czech community and cultural center in Houston to benefit all Texans of Czech descent was born. The first grassroots meeting two weeks later involved less than a dozen "Texan Czechs." Five years later, there are 1,500 members, $650,000 sits in the bank account and the organization is poised to buy land in the Museum District to build $4.5 million community and cultural center that would include a restaurant, meeting room, classrooms, an auditorium/banquet hall, a genealogical (Continued on page 16.)

Quarter Reports Due March 15 It's almost quarter report time again! Mark the date—March 15. That's when the third quarter report for December, January and February is due. Also, youth leaders, please include the number of new members in your youth club during the quarter. Last quarter, SPJST youth clubs grew by more than 30 new members. The youth clubs who welcomed new members were listed in the quarter report. Here's an addition to that list: Lodge 92, Fort Worth Youth Club, under the direction of Youth Leader Gayle Fuller, added seven new members to their youth club during the quarter. That is great! Yea. Way to go! I challenge all youth clubs to top that in the third quarter!

"We had to talk to the mall manager into letting us rent the space, but in less than two weeks, we were open and ready for business." That wouldn't have been possible if the Czech community and one very special resident of the Czech Republic, Dusen Havlicek, hadn't stepped in. The saleable items were all from what is now the Czech Republic and Slovakia, but he also included the cash register and credit card machine. The Czech Market Place opened in the summer of 1997. It has been accessible every day, with the exception of major holidays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Mondays through Saturdays and noon to 6 p.m. on Sundays. It operates with a volunteer staff, including the manager, Gladys Kahanek. "They handle a four and one half hour shift, 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or 2:30 to 7 p.m.," Rosene said. "It works out well, though we are are always looking for more volunteers, especially on weekends." There are other volunteers like James Ennis, who is the market-place accountant and Maria Mann who teaches the Czech language Monday nights. Since all of them are of Czech heritage, what the staff refers to as "remote cousins" drop in often. "Unknown relatives visit us because they have heard about the shop," Rosene said. "It's an interesting way to watch our membership grow." Although the market place is the backbone of the organization, it certainly isn't the cultural center's only project. There is a slick, 20-page quarterly newsletter and next month, the center will participate in the International Expo 2000 in George R. Brown Convention Center. At its annual membership dinner in March, three college students with at least one percent of Czech heritage will be awarded $1,000 scholarships. Coming Events Other upcoming events include an April 5 visit with former astronaut Gene Cernan, who is of Czech and Slovak descent. Cernan will sign copies of his recent book, The Last Man on the Moon. The ambassador of the Czech Republic, Alexandr Vondra, also will attend the event. On April 25, the first annual Distinguished Czech Citizen Award will be presented, and a monthlong language study and cultural tour of the Czech Republic is planned for July.

The market place is even a place that sparks romance. Both Raymond Snokhous, the honorary consul of the Czech Republic and a widower, and Clarice Mark Simpson, a widow, are members of the steering committee for the cultural center's capital campaign. It was at the steering committee meetings in the market place meeting room that these full-blooded Czechs got to know each other better. Close to Thanksgiving, they were married in a village church south of Prague, where Snokhous' grandparents wed many years ago. They will return to the village this summer, when new bells are installed in the church tower. The original chimes were removed during the Communist regime, and the replacement bells are being cast. They are the honorary consul's gift to the church. The installation and dedication ceremony will be in July. The vision of Rosene has come a long way from that day five years ago when she decided to fully recognize her Czech heritage. Although she is the first to admit that she couldn't have done it without the full support of her husband, it would be no surprise to see within the next five years a completed Czech Cultural Center Houston as part of the Museum District landscape. For additional information about the cultural center, call (713) 686-6362 or stop by the market place, across from Foley's in Northwest Mall. Submitted by, Effie Rosene —SPJST-
