FAQ

Leadership More Than a Title

It's a Way of Life ...

"Human qualities - not position or title - make a leader. The signs of outstanding leadership are found among the followers, for without them there would be no leaders." -Author Unknown The most important resource that the SPJST has are its members with the ability and get-up-and-go to make good things happen. We've got a lot of them. Some are active. Many aren't. The ability and know how to get things done exhibits itself in very different ways. Sometimes, it appears in the form of a gifted sales representative who has done his or her homework and closes the sale. At other times, the ability and know how to innovate shows itself in the form of a self-starting individual, who brings life and vitality to even the most routine lodge meetings and rituals. Both contribute to the bottom line of building a stronger SPJST. These members are special and the people I admire and learn from in the SPJST. They set priorities, organize work and are accountable for results. They define the spirit and optimism that can energize a stronger and more dynamic SPJST in the years ahead. Even with the authority that comes with an "official" title, one cannot really command and control creativity, enthusiasm and innovation. The best that a democratic body can do is offer direction, work together and establish a climate of trust that encourages collaboration and favors inclusiveness: An environment that recognizes the importance of sharing power in exchange for everyone achieving a greater sense of responsibility. A leader is someone who can guide the efforts of a group toward a result beyond its current reach. They can come from anywhere in the organization. They are confident in their beliefs and values and are just as ready to be the servants of their followers. They stimulate the energy and talent of others, allow their ideas to flow and help them reach and extend their potential.

"A leader is someone who can guide the efforts of a group toward a result beyond its current reach."

By being flexible and open-minded, effective leaders encourage others to join in. They promote two-way communication. Most people in the SPJST, I believe, want to make a positive difference and be proud of their results and be recognized for what they do. Effective leadership works to create an organizational environment that satisfies these needs, builds on diversity and allows members - young and old - to contribute to their fullest. Quite a few lodges and districts have been or will be holding delegates meetings in anticipation of the SPJST convention in June. I had the chance to sit in on another just this past Sunday at Lodge 189, Bryan College Station. These kinds of meetings are good because they encourage members to get a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing the SPJST. Moreover, it's a grand opportunity for our local lodge leaders to speak up and champion the ideas and initiatives that will enable the SPJST to achieve new heights in the 21st Century. Leadership in Action

Hats off to the district youth counselors, youth leaders and their assistants who participated in the Youth Leaders Workshop held this past weekend at the Peaceable Kingdom Retreat west of Salado in Bell County. That was quite a program! Sincere ,appreciation is also extended to State Youth birector Melanie Zavondy who organized the weekend retreat which covered topics ranging from camping, dancing and painting to the essentials of planning effective local and district youth activities. Watch for photos and summary in a couple of weeks.

Pay Life. It Isn't Just for Children. Lone

As its name suggests, the purchaser of an SPJST Lone Pay Life certificate makes only one premium payment, resulting in a paid—up certificate. For years, it has been a favorite plan for parents and grandparents seeking to enroll their children and grandchildren in the SPJST. However, did you know that a Lone Pay Life certificate can be issued to individuals up to age 80? As you would expect, at the older issue ages, it can be expensive; however, it could be just the thing for older members who want to buy additional permanent insurance. For example, a female at age 70 can purchase additional paid-up insurance at the rate of $570 per $1,000 of coverage with a minimum purchase of $5,000 coverage. The Lone Pay Life certificate may also be of interest to anyone wishing to make a gift of life insurance to a college, church, charitable organization or individual. For more information on the SPJST Lone Pay Life certificate or other financial products, please contact your local lodge sales representative.

Take a Closer Look at SPJST Annuities Many people buy homes even though they have no intention of ever living in them. Instead. they lease the property and collect rent at regular intervals. They have made an investment of capital for the sole purpose of producing a regular income. An annuity is a similar kind of arrangement . . . The basic purpose of an annuity is to distribute a regular, guaranteed lifetime income through a scientific liquidation of invested capital. Annuities start with a sum of mcney that has either been paid in a lump sum (single pay annuVLe) or has been accumulated through payments over a number of years (deferred annuities). In planning for retirement, a person may want to ''send money ahead" by making regular payments to an annuity years before retirement. At retirement, the annuity will be ready to make payments back to supplement retirement income . . . Introduction to Life Underwriting, Dearborn • R&R Newkirk, Dearborn Financial Publishing, Inc.

SPJST Museum Accepts Gifts: Invites Visitors to Tour Collection The SPJST Museum received the following donations in the month of January: A collection of ceramic and glass figurines of birds, butterflies, and angels from the estate of the late Dolores Simpson of Temple, Texas. Mrs. Simpson visited the museum and it was her wish that these items be donated to the SPJST Museum. Czech Republic-Moravian Crest - (See insert) A picture of the small emblem of the Czech Republic donated by Clarence Matula of La Grange, Texas. It consists of a red shield which contains a silver splittailed lion rampant with a golden crown and golden claws. This symbol appeared in the late 12th century. It dates to 1158 and can be seen on the tomb of Ottokar I, first hereditary king of Bohemia, who died in 1230. *The Czechoslovak Republic has retained the Bohemian lion under all its forms of government. *(Heraldry Sources, Symbols, and Meanings by Ottfried Neubecker, McGraw-Hill, 1976) For more information or a copy on the Legend of

How The Lion Got Two Tails (The Legend of Bruncvik), contact Dorothy Pechal at the Home Office.) In the month of January, 61 visitors toured the museum. This included Cub Scouts Troop 118 of Belton who came for a weekend tour. Also touring were visitors from Florida, Germany, and Missouri. We would be delighted to have you come for a tour of the museum. As you are planning activities for the week, month, or even year, why not decide to include the SPJST Museum as one of the "attraction spots" you would like to visit? There is no admittance charge and scheduled appointments are not necessary during the week. (Groups of 10 or more, however, are encouraged to call ahead of time.) If a weekend tour for a large group is preferred, we will be happy to assist you then. It will be a pleasure to serve you and yours! Submitted by Dorothy Pechal Museum Curator

SPJST Lodge 87, Temple met at 8 p.m. on January 11, 2000. After enjoying the leftovers from our winter holiday party, we recited the Pledge of Allegiance and observed a moment of silence for our departed members. Treasurer Daryl Entrop's reports from both November and December were read and approved. We also reviewed our annual receipts and disbursements and were pleased to find that the latter exceeded the former by only a small margin. We were, however, disappointed to find such a large proportion was spent on hall maintenance and repair that we had little margin for the charitable and fraternal activities we would prefer to support. There was broad consensus that we should try to ameliorate this problem in the coming years. We expressed our appreciation toward the Alfords and now toward Bertha Capps who has taken over responsibility for the rental of our lodge; Daryl's calculations revealed that their efforts provided a quarter of our annual income! Minutes of the meeting after our December holiday party were unfortunately not available and will be reviewed at our. February meeting. Our current slate of officers had been reelected and so Supreme Lodge Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir installed us for our current year of service. Fraternal Activities Coordinator Thelma Groppell announced the Tarok tournament which-was held January 15. She then presented a certificate to Bertha Capps who was our Fraternalist of the Year and we wished her the best of luck in the statewide competition. Afterwards, Sister Groppell presented "Everyday Heroes" pins to our active members in appreciation for

Brother Entrop will check with the contractor who had previously agreed to evaluate the lodge's siding for repair or replacement. I volunteered to purchase new waste receptacles to replace the less than attractive ones we presently use. New business brought up by Brother Sid Kacir was the possibility of inviting a lecturer to the lodge for our members or the community at large. FAC Thelma Groppell volunteered to look into a lecture on microwaves described in the local paper. Then, President Norma Alford suggested that we all contemplate goals for our lodge in the year 2000. One suggestion was to increase our charitable donations and to garner additional publicity for our lodge by sponsoring more SPJST and community activities. Thanks for All You Do Our most important order of business was to express our appreciation to Brother Lad Zatopek and Sister Mary Ann Zatopek who were unable to attend the meeting due to Sister Zatopek's surgery. We sometimes fail to realize how much they do for the lodge, but it became abundantly clear when we counted the number of additional individuals needed to pitch in during their absence! We sent all our prayers and best wishes to Mary Ann during her convalescence and hope to express even more of our appreciation in person at our February gathering. Universal Life.

Tailored to Meet Your Needs. Universal Life has been called many things: • The Plan of the Future • A Computer-Agri:Ian • A New Concept in Life Insurance • A Plan Custom-Designed for Each Insured It's all of these things. Here are some of the features of SPJST's Universal Life contract, which we call our "SPJST Flexible Protector Plan": Step 1: You elect an amount of insurance and select Death Benefit Option A or B (as described below). You can also select the amount of premium you want to pay and make the initial payment. Step 2: As each premium is received by SPJST, a small expense charge is deducted and the balance goes into your cash value account.

Step 3: At the beginning of each month, a charge for the life insurance protection is deducted from the cash value to pay the monthly life insurance protection costs. Step 4: Interest at current rates is credited to the fund each month.

Coverage is Flexible. You have a choice of two death benefits, Option A or Option B: Option A: Level Death Benefit. The death benefit is made up of life insurance and the cash value. Initially, this benefit is equal to the face amount. However, current tax law states that there must always be a certain minimum proportion of life insurance in the certificate. Therefore, as

the cash value approaches the face amount, the death benefit increases automatically. Option B : Increasing Death Benefit. The death benefit is equal to the face amount of life insurance protection plus the money in the cash value account.

made to the Wild Bear Science Center, Nederland, Colorado, in her memory. I first met Lottie at one of our Circle meetings in 1994 when she was visiting Milly and Jerry Elzner. An almost instant friendship was formed and I am only sorry I never met Lottie years ago. She was a very thoughtful lady, sending door prizes from California at Christmastime when she was unable to come in person. She will be missed. Donations were made in her memory by Frances Kosarek, Milly and Jerry Elzner, Becky Elzner and Anna Marie Moss. Rhonda White announced a waffle breakfast was being held at Sokol Corpus Christi on March 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. as a fund raiser for our gymnasts. Several members purchased tickets. Helen Pavelka invited everyone to the 16th Czech Heritage Festival being held March 18 at the Bayfront Plaza Convention Center Exhibit Hall from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Jerry Elzner called our attention to a beautiful print of Charles Bridge in Prague donated to Sokol by his daughter, Marsha. He had it framed and hung it just above the picture of the old and new Sokol buildings. It is really beautiful. Betty Jurica announced that she had filled our second scrapbook and is starting a third. We received several pictures to start filling it. Edna Voldan appeared in the Vestnik as Lodge 79's Fraternalist of the Year. Helen Pavelka's granddaughter Lindsey's picture appeared in the the Caller Times for her $4,000 lamb entry on the Nueces County Junior Livestock Show and Kathryn Blaire Pittman, granddaughter of Marion Peter, was a 1999-2000 debutant of the Coastal Cotillion. "Happy Birthday" was sung to Helen Kasparek and Marion Peterek. Happy birthday, ladies! Door prizes were given out and after a delicious luncheon was served, a nice group stayed for bingo and fun. Don't know when I've enjoyed myself more. Our monthly meetings only seem to get better and better. When I got home from Sokol, there was a postcard in the mailbox addressed to the Circle. It was from Denver, Colorado where Jerry Elzner had landed on his flight to his sister's funeral. He sent greetings from the "mile high city" and said he'd see us Thursday . . . and he did. Fraternally yours, Anna Marie Moss —SPJST-

Snook Brethren

Church fund raiser set for April 2 The Snook Brethren Church is having a fund raiser on Sunday, April 2, but it will be held at the SPJST Hall (including an abbreviated worship service). The purpose of the fund raiser is for the expansion/remodeling project that we are doing.

Congratulations to Joe Dybala and Gertrude Sodolak, who were crowned Valentine King and Queen during the Valentine Party held at S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 2 in Needville on February 14. SPJST Lodge 9 has been very active as they have taken on a project of each family selling raffle tickets for our fundraiser. Several of the kids are members of our church, but they voted to do this as each year they hold their

special "Grandparents Day" program at our church and this was their way of thanking us further for the church use. They are definitely to be commended for this effort. —SPJST-

IRA an Attractive Option SPJST's Roth IRA investments grow tax-deferred, tax-free Roth

Concern regarding the instability of Social Security continues to grow, and Americans are looking for new ways to secure their financial future. The Roth IRA gives you the ability to invest your after-tax dollars today, let the investment grow tax-deferred, and withdraw your principal and earnings tax-free after five years. You may be subject to a 10 percent penalty on the earnings if taken before age 591/2. What makes the Roth IRA so unique? Imagine for a moment that you have just received a paycheck from your company. You look at your payroll summary and notice that there are no federal income taxes withheld. Your initial reaction is that something is wrong. It's not, if this check is from your Roth IRA. Two factors make this possible: • First, the money you contribute to a Roth IRA has already been taxed. So the principal amount is never subject to taxes or penalties in the future, as long as you stay within the contribution guidelines. • Second, this retirement plan allows the money you contribute to grow tax-deferred. If you do not withdraw any of the earnings until you have had the plan for at least five years, those tax-deferred earnings become tax-free. Who is eligible? Unlike the Traditional IRA, there is no 70 1/2 age limit on making contributions. You simply need to have earned income equal to the amount you contribute up to a maximum of $2,000 ($4,000 combined for spouses) per year. (There are income thresholds which may reduce the amount you can contribute.) How much can I contribute? Individuals may contribute up to $2,000 per year if their adjusted gross income (AGI) is less than $95,000. If an individual's AGI is between $95,000 and $110,000, they may contribute a reduced amount adjusted for their income. Married couples filing jointly may contribute up to $2,000 each if their AGI is less than $150,000.

Contributions for joint filers are reduced for AGI's between $150,000 and $160,000. Roth IRA contributions may not be made by individuals with AGI of more than $110,000, or couples with AGI of more than $160,000. When can I use my IRA assets? If you satisfy two conditions, you may make tax-free and penalty-free withdrawals from your Roth IRA. First. the plan must have been open for a minimum of five years. Second, the withdrawal must be made after the occurrence of one of the following events: • age 591/2, • death, • disability, or •first home purchase. Distributions which meet the above requirements are referred to as "qualifying distributions." While you may take distributions from your Roth IRA at any time, distributions which are not qualifying distributions will be subject to taxes (and in some cases early distribution penalties) to the extent they exceed your aggregate contributions to Roth IRAs. Can I move money from my traditional IRA to my Roth IRA? The answer is "Yes." There are specific rules that govern the process of rolling over funds from a Traditional IRA to a Roth IRA. Some of these rules include:

• Your AGI must be 'less than $100,000. • If you are married, you must file a joint income tax return. • You must pay taxes on all the pretax dollars you move. Special tax rules apply for rollovers completed in 1998. • Rollover must be completed within 60 days. Am I ever required to take funds from my Roth IRA? Unlike the Traditional IRA, there are no required minimum distributions at age 70 1/2. Your earnings can continue to grow until you need them. There are special requirements when these plans pass to your beneficiaries. For more information on the benefits of the new Roth IRA, ask your lodge representatives today for details. —SPJST-

Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center receives $206,000 for Sanford Schmid Stage

To Preserve Our Heritage "As a citizen of Fayette County and as a Texan of Czech ancestry, my objective in making this donation is to preserve our heritage," Schmid says. "Our rural heritage is fading away; this project will save it for future generations. The amphitheater itself will be a great addition to our community, the setting of many enjoyable events and performances in the years ahead." Born in Austin County, Sanford Schmid graduated from Fayetteville High School. Growing up, he lived in the Industry area at Das Haus, the home of his great-great grandfather, Dr. Ernst Witte. Donated by Sanford Schmid and his mother, Annie Schmid, Das Haus is now preserved by the Texas German Society. Schmid traces his Czech ancestry to Tobias and Helena Kovar Dockal from Sloupnice, Cechie, who arrived in Galveston in 1870. In addition to his interest in historic preservation, Sanford Schmid has been active in other civic affairs. In 1959, he served in the Texas Legislature as a representative for District 45. He is active in the Sons of Hermann, Czech Heritage Society, SPJST and Texas German Society. He has long supported local charities such as the American Legion, Future Farmers of America and Fayette County 4-H programs. The Amphitheater Site Nestled in a cove on a high hill overlooking the Colorado River, the amphitheater will be the first outdoor performance facility on the Lower Colorado River. Instituted with seed money from the LCRA in 1998, the amphitheater will be available for concerts, plays and other productions by community groups, touring shows or foreign exchange performance. Performance will be open to any qualified group and will not be limited to those with a Czech theme. The Sanford Schmid Stage of the amphitheater will be a state-of-the-art performance area. Fraternally, Heather Slenk (3/8/00) —SPJST-

Dear Members, We had a clean-up day and meeting on Saturday, February 19, 2000. We worked really hard cleaning and clearing the land. My sister and I dug out yaupon stumps. This was hard but fun. Thanks To Dottie Evertte for helping us with the stumps. We held our meeting and lunch. Then, we went back to work. Glad this only comes once a year. Here is a picture of our Christmas gift exchange. Sincerely, Dylan Roesler (3/9/00)

time is right to make new friends .

The

Fraternalism and fraternal life insurance are both rooted in the principle that each of us has a responsibility to each other. Going back to the days of the Roman Empire, there were societies organized to unify groups and provide financial aid in time of sickness and death. Even then, there was a keen awareness of the cruelties and hardships that death brings to families. These early societies had another purpose. They recognized the need of human beings for companionship. For that reason, they provided a way for people to meet in friendly gatherings — where selfishness and prejudice were suppressed and the principles of brotherhood were nurtured, thereby establishing a better understanding among the members. You belong, too! Consider attending your next lodge or district meeting. Remember, "The time is right to make new friends."
