An

Tarok Tournament (Continued from page 1. five, then took a 21 point lead in round six. Tupa's second place total score was just three pints over Coufal's third place win. With his total of 805 points averaging 134.16 per round, Tupa created just enough of a spark to scorch Coufal. Jimmie Coufal who was 92 points above Edith by round two, fell 48 points behind her round four, then again 85 points behind her in round five. Jimmie ended the tournament just 24 points behind Edith and took third place. It was most likely his low score of 73 in round two that sent him spiraling into third place with a total of 802 points and an average of 133. 66 Franklin Schlesinger, uninhibited from trying to run a tournament and play Taroks at the same time, was able to concentrate on winning big hands. Compensating the scores of 88 and 65 in rounds two and three, respectively, Schlesinger earned two high round scores, one being the highest of the day at 236 points in round six. Oh, yes, Brother Franklin jumped into fourth place with a literal holler and a bang at 798 total points with an average of 133 points per round. High round winners were round one—Ed Scaff, 213 points; Evelyn Scaff took round two with 235 points; round three was Johnnie Tupa with 199 points; round four—Franklin Schlesinger, 194 points; round five— Randy Gaas, 182 points; and in round six Franklin Schlesinger again, with the highest score of the day 236 points. The first through fourth place winners were rewarded with cash prizes and trophies. The first place champion also received a sew-on patch proclaiming her Tarok Champion 2000.

We won't mention the name of the person who received the "At least I was there" sew-on patch for his efforts to come in at last place. This dormant daredevil scored a negative 74 score in round six and ended the day with an average of 59 points per round. What's up with that? Please don't tell me you did it just for the patch? Now folks, I am talking this dude has been known to score in the top eight through first places in quite a few tournaments. Personally, I do believe he did it just for the patch. I want to mention my fun lunch with two great ladies, Agnes Reznicek and Anna Lesikar. They are a riot to be around. Thanks again my friend, Agnes, for your thoughtfulness. I also want to acknowledge Jimmie Coufal's help and Al Soukup for his kindness, consideration and interesting conversation. And then there's that Joe Schlepenhimer fellow, the rebellious fraternalist. Need I say more about that subject? Irene, I know you worked with the other lodge volunteers to make the day a success. I really appreciate everyone's efforts to make the day comfortable for the players and for the humble State Fraternal Activities Coordinator. (Please not to associate with the Uriah Heep kind of humble.) To George Straten: Great choice of colors. Very creative. The next Tarok tournament is just around the corner. SPJST Lodge 49, Rowena will be hosting their annual Tarok Tournament on Saturday, May 27, 2000. Players, you will be receiving a reminder in the mail. We always have a great time in Rowena. The weekend starts with a social on Friday evening and ends Saturday with the tournament. There is a hotel in Ballinger and the La Quinta in San Angelo is a nice place, for those of you who wish to spend the night. Joe

On Sunday, March 19, 2000, Lodge 81 of Needville met for their monthly meeting. We had a nice group of people on this sunny day. An invitation is always extended for anyone to come join us. The five dollar door prizes were won by Darlene Blinka, Edwin Susan, Ben Tydlacka and Brooke Stavinoha. Congratulations to these lucky winners! A Delicious Meal! After a prayer of thanks, a delicious meal of baked and fried chicken with a variety of side dishes and desserts was served. Everything was delicious! At 1p.m, President Vincent Newman called the meeting to order. Dorothy Kuban led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We had a moment of silence for our departed members Alvin Pollock and Elizabeth Zela. All officers answered the roll call. Reports were read by Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall, Treasurer Benita Walzel, and Special Fund Chairman Gilbert Walzel. There were no corrections to the reports, so they were accepted as read. Added to our sick list were Bernie Tielke, Joe Pesak and Elsie Brdecka. Alvin Blinka had eye surgery and appeared to be doing very well. We wish everyone a speedy recovery. Under old business, President Vincent Newman reported that he brought a new ballast for the light fixture and the new microphone is ordered. We also discussed the 50year member ceremony. Willie Mae Kuykendall reported that we will have eleven recipients this year. Willie Mae Kuykendall also said that she will look into ordering a cake. Darlene Blinka and Winifred Susan said they would take care of decorating the cake table. Also, Benita Walzel said that she will get the corsages and boutonnieres. Jeanette Newman will take a picture or two for the Vestnik. Thank you to these willing volunteers! It would be hard to do this without you. Work Day Set for March 30 Under new business, it was brought to our attention that Elsie Brdecka would not be able to attend this year's convention. Our alternates, Alvin and Darlene Blinka will go instead. We

also discussed SPJST scholarships from our lodge. So far, we have two members who will be applying this year. Also under new business, it was decided to have a workday to clean up the lodge. March 30 at 8:30 a.m became the agreed day and time. I hope everyone will try to show up at least for a little while. Every little bit helps. Next Meeting April 16 For our April 16 meeting, Benita Walzel generously volunteered to bake a roast, since we'll be honoring our 50-year members and having their immediate families join us. I'm telling you folks, if you've never tasted Benita's roast, you're missing out. Members, please remember to bring a side dish and dessert. We hope to see you there! cream can be good for the soul! Ice

Last week I took my children to a restaurant. My six-year-old son asked if he could say grace. As we bowed our heads he said, "God is good. God is great. Thank you for the food, and I would even thank you more if mom gets us ice cream for dessert. And Liberty and justice for all! Amen!" Along with the laughter from the other customers nearby I heard a woman remark, "That's what's wrong with this country! Kids today don't even know how to pray! Asking God for ice-cream! Why, I never!" Hearing this, my son burst into tears and asked me, "Did I do it wrong? Is God mad at me?" As I held him and assured him that he had done a terrific job and God was certainly not mad at him, an elderly gentleman approached the table. He winked at my son and said, "I happen to know that God thought that was a great prayer." "Really?" my son asked. "Cross my heart," he said. Then in a theatrical whisper he added (indicating to the woman whose remark had started this whole thing), "Too bad she never asks God for ice cream. A little ice cream is sometimes good for the soul." Naturally, I bought my kid's ice cream at the end of the meal. When the ice cream arrived, my son stared at his for a moment and then did something I will remember the rest of my life. He picked up his sundae and without a word walked over and placed it in front of the woman. With a big smile he told her, "Here, this is for you. Ice cream is sometimes good for the soul and my soul is good already .. . " —Submitted hi Carole Faraizl Lodge 84, Dallas —SPJST-

Another 100 Percent SPJST Family

She didn't really like high school. "They make you stay in this little box," Erin said, referring to the many rules that prohibited them from doing anything controversial. It was the same with the community theater, she said, because Victoria is a small town. Theater is about being human, Erin said. There is such a big message. She points to Charlie Chaplin her favorite actor, who showed the world how to laugh when they wanted to cry. But yes, Erin said, Victoria did give her a start in life. "It did prepare me," she said, "but you step off a cliff and hope to fly."

A painfully shy young lady climbs onstage and forgets everything but her role. It's her time — hers alone. Jo and Frank Prochaska are most proud of their grandson, Jerral Lane, son of Janie Prochaska, who made the Dean's List at NTSU at Denton. Congratulations, Jerral! Anna Sustala was proudly showing off photos of her great-granddaughter, Lara Ann "Annie" Lefforge who lives in Utah. Little Annie is the daughter of Margie Turner Lefforge. Anna has every right to be happy and proud to have her named after her. From the photos, she certainly is a beautiful baby. Agnes Reznicek has been on the tarok circuit lately playing in Seaton at Lodge 47 in Granger at the KJZT Tournament and at state at Cottonwood Lodge 6. She said she had a great time even though she was not a winner. Congratulations go out to Rosie Steinman for being designated Queen of the Day by the Czech Cultural Society on Czech Day at the State Fair last October. Due to rain at the State Fair, she was late in being awarded her big trophy. Jo Prochaska got reacquainted with a cousin, William Paviecka of San Antonio at the SPJST meeting in Ennis recently. They have not seen each other since age five or six. Jo didn't say how many years this has been, only that they hadn't seen each other since age five or six. I believe Jo and Frank have already celebrated their 50th something wedding anniversary, so now this has been a very long time since they've seen each other. She said they had a lot of catching up to do. In addition to Jo and Frank attending the SPJST meeting in Ennis, Anna Johnson, Rosie Steinman and Jeanie Mason also attended. All said it was good meeting and afterwards, several drove across the highway to attend the 10K Giveaway at Sokol. None were winners. This month Agnes Reznicek was passing out little containers of sauerkraut and dumplings, and since I was one of the lucky ones, it was wonderful, Agnes. Thanks a bundle. Our hostesses Bessie Brezina, Anna Johnson and Pauline Walker did a great job. After grace was said, all enjoyed a wonderful luncheon and then games were played. There is lots to remember for our next meeting—covered dish for lunch, food items for the Food Pantry and a little gift all wrapped up. See you April 5. Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST-

Life. Tailored to Meet Your Needs. Universal

Universal Life has been called many things: • The Plan of the Future • A Computer-Age Plan • A New Concept in Life Insurance • A Plan Custom-Designed for Each Insured it's all of these things. Here are some of the features of SPJST's Universal Life contract, which we call our "SPJST Flexible Protector Plan": Step 1: You elect an amount of insurance and select Death Benefit Option A or B (as described below). You can also select the amount of premium you want to pay and make the initial payment. Step 2: As each premium is received by SPJST, a small expense charge is deducted and the balance goes into your cash value account.

Step 3: At the beginning of each month, a charge for the life insurance protection is deducted from the cash value to pay the monthly life insurance protection costs. Step 4: Interest at current rates is credited to the fund each month.

Safely Home

And He came Himself to meet me In that way so hard to tread; And with Jesus' arm to lean on, Could I have one doubt or dread?

I am home in Heaven, dear ones; Oh, so happy and so bright! There is perfect joy and beauty In this everlasting light.

Then you must not grieve so sorely, For I love you dearly still: Try to look beyond earth's shadows, Pray to trust our Father's Will.

All the pain and grief is over Every restless tossing passed; I am now at peace forever, Safely home in Heaven at last.

There is work still waiting for you, So you must not idly stand; Do it now, while life remainethYou shall rest in Jesus' land.

Did you wonder I so calmly Trod the valley of the shade? Oh! but Jesus' love illumined Every dark and fearful glade.

When that work is all completed, He will gently call you Home; Oh, the rapture of that meeting, Oh, the joy to see yoj come!
