person's loue for spouse and children and flconcern ouer their welfare are good reasons to

keep one's life insurance contract in good standing.

But sometimes, even the most well-planned insurance program becomes outdated. For that reason, it's a good idea to occasionally review your certificate and see if it still fits your changing needs. That's where an SPJST sales representative can help. When you're ready to review your present coverage, give your local lodge sales representative a call. If you're not sure about who to talk to, please contact the SPJST Insurance Department at 1 (800) 727-7578 and they can put you in touch with a sales representative in your area. 0

Don't Let Time Sneak Up On You Let's Get It Fixed Well, it finally happened. Time caught up to me this Sunday. Thanks to the shift in Daylight Savings Time, my wristwatch is once again accurate. For the past five months — thanks to a broken stem — my watch had been set on Eastern Standard Time. The time change solved the problem — at least on the surface . . . The watch is still broken and needs to be fixed. It isn't a life-and-death situation; however, it helps to illustrate a point: Some things just won't get done unless you make them happen. The decision to purchase life insurance is like that. It's a simple task that is all too easy to put off. There's always "later." As we all know, it doesn't always work that way ... If you know someone who is uninsured — or if you are without adequate coverage, please consider the following facts: An insurance certificate issued by the SPJST is a safe asset and one that can increase in value as it grows older. What's more, the rate at which you can purchase life insurance increases the older you get. If you delay, you may escape illness, accident or premature death, but you can't escape the payment of a higher premium. Some things you can put off indefinitely. Buying life insurance isn't one of them. For more information on SPJST's competitively priced ModTerm insurance or any of the many other coverage plans available through the SPJST, please contact your local lodge sales representative. If you're not sure who that it, please contact the Insurance Department at the SPJST Home Office at 1 (800) 727-7578 and they'll put you in touch with a sales representative in your area. Back to the wristwatch. It's important to take care of the little things, too, They have a way of snow-balling if you let them. I'll be dropping the watch off at the shop on Tuesday to get it fixed!

Partners in Progress "Powerful partnerships are coalitions laced with honesty. Truth and candor are seen as tools for growth rather than devices for disdain. Partners serve each other straight talk mixed with compassion and care." —Chip R. Bell Like a lot of you, I'm looking forward to the Twenty-Eighth Convention in Temple. It's an exciting prospect — an opportunity to evaluate our organization and its progreSs — and then to build on our strengths. The democratic process that helps to define and characterize our Society can be a very healthy and rejuvenating exercise. With an emphasis on accountability and a commitment to high ideals, decisions made at the Year 2000 Convention can enable the SPJST to more effectively respond to its members needs and the challenges of our changing world. Reform and innovation are healthy processes and they are what keep us growing. With that thought in mind, please note that again, on the cover of this week's Vestnik is a reminder from the By-Laws Committee, encouraging members to submit their recommendations to that committee by the all important April 13 deadline. To date, several lodges and districts have conducted formal delegates meetings and that's great. By and large, the sessions have provided delegates and other interested members with a forum for airing and addressing the challenges and opportunities facing our fraternal order. Elections are also a necessary condition of democracy and of our fraternal benefit society. Our Supreme Lodge officers, directors and Editor's position will all be decided during the convention. The opportunity to participate in free elections is central to the theme of a free society. As it (Continued on next page.)

"It's important to take care of the little things, too. They have a wa of snow-balling you let them."

Lodge reporters, others encouraged to submit local lodge histories In that 2000 is a convention year, the Vestnik will once again be presenting a special issue in June dedicated in part to chronicling the history of our local lodges — especially as that relates to happenings since the

last convention. Please submit your articles and photographs to the Vestnik no later than May 24 to ensure that they get included in this update issue. If you have any questions, please call the Editor's office at the SPJST Home Office, toll free, at 1 (800) 727-7578, or call locally at 7731575. Thank you for your attention. Fraternally yours, Brian Vanicek, Editor —SPJST-

applies to the SPJST, it helps assure both the membership and Home Office personnel that their leadership remains proactive and responsive to their needs and concerns. That's important. After nearly eight years as your Editor, I remain optimistic about the future of our Society. The fraternal concept is just as valid now as it was when we were founded more than a century ago. There's still so much we can achieve if we are willing to do our homework, make plans and then work to achieve them. As a lifelong and active member, I truly hope that following the convention, the SPJST emerges with a dynamic and cohesive game plan with clearly defined organizational goals and steps for achieving them. A game plan that builds on our strengths; a game plan that truly seeks to unite us; and a game plan that challenges each of us — as lodge members, as employees and as elected representatives — to achieve our fullest potential. By working together as partners and as brothers and sisters for the common good of the SPJST and the communities we seek to serve, our future can indeed be bright. —SPJST-

Lone Pay Life. It Isn't Just for Children. As its name suggests, the purchaser of an SPJST Lone Pay Life certificate makes only one premium payment, resulting in a paid-up certificate. For years, it has been a favorite plan for parents and grandparents seeking to enroll their children and grandchildren in the SPJST. However, did you know that a Lone Pay Life certificate can be issued to individuals up to age 80? As you would expect, at the older issue ages, it can be expensive; however, it could be just the thing for older members who want to buy additional permanent insurance. For example, a female at age 70 can purchase additional paid-up insurance at the rate of $570 per $1,000 of coverage with a minimum purchase of $5,000 coverage. The Lone Pay Life certificate may also be of interest to anyone wishing to make a gift of life insurance to a college, church, charitable organization or individual. American Business Machines Visits Blue Bonnet Youth Ranch The American Business Machines (ABM) owned by Greg Lucas and Daniel Anders, son of Ernest and Margie Anders, visited the Blue Bonnet Youth Ranch at Yoakum, Texas for the fifth year on Friday, December 17, 1999. Daniel, Margie and Ernest are all members of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston. ABM brought 47 of their employees on a bus donated by Coach USA to visit the abused and neglected children living at the ranch. The group traveled two hours to donate Christmas presents for the gifts they wished for. Prior to the trip, ABM received the children's wish lists and each employee signed up for what they thought they couldprovide for the children. But more importantly, the employees spent time with the children they adopted for the day. Meeting the children in their own environment allowed us to know them better.

The Blue Bonnet Youth Ranch is a nonprofit facility created to provide a safe home for victims of child abuse, abandonment and neglect. Established in 1968, the working ranch receives no state funds and relies solely on private donations. During our December visit, they had 26 children ranging in age from four to 18 years of age. The children attend public school and meet with case workers, professional counselors and tutors on a regular basis. Neglected and abused children are referred to the ranch by Texas State Child Protective Services. ABM Co. furnished a catered barbecue lunch for all employees, children and co-workers. Then we all toured the facility and enjoyed watching as each child individually unwrapped their gifts. The trip was worthwhile. Ernest and I enjoyed going with the group. Lodge 92, Fort Worth appearance by Don Peachey well-received Our dance on March 19 with music by Don Peachey of Burnet, Wisconsin was very well attended. The Tatarevich family and friends occupied a big table. We hope you enjoyed the afternoon and will be in attendance often. Frank and Theretta Praslicka also had a large number of family and friends at their table. They obviously were having a good time. We were also pleased to see Stanley and Martha Patak of Red Oak. Stanley gave us his great rendition of Yesterday I Waited For You accompanied by Joe Kozel on his new accordion. Also in attendance were Harold Strand and Eddie Miller and their spouses. It is always great to see musicians come out for an afternoon of dancing. Last, but not least, there were several Polka Club or Red and Whites in attendance. The highlight of the dance was the appearance of the Texas Chicken aka Paxton Davies accompanied by Ann Sustala and Frank Prochaska. Undoubtedly, it was the largest circle and most enthusiastic rendition of the chicken dance ever. Joyce Tesar and her able assistant, Frankie, have been managers of our hall for 20 years. Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance. All lodge officers were present at the meeting except our Treasurer Josie Mitchell. Thanks to Linda and J.C. Johnson for getting pizza for our group to enjoy before the meeting. Everyone enjoys the fellowship we share before the meeting and it is even better if we can munch together also. During our lodge meeting, Libbie Bartek, Chairperson for the Sunshine Committee, reported that she had sent a sympathy card to Mary Ann Summer. The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as presented. We received no correspondence this month which is unusual for this time of year. All committee chairpersons presented their reports. Under old business, we voted that the lodges donate $100 each to the Academy and Rogers Project Celebrations. New Business Janet Lyon stated that she had attended the state workshop in Ennis, Texas and accepted the Bronze Award for the lodge. We decided that we want stew for the next meeting and Louis Driska is going to take charge of that for us. We had several ladies volunteer to make some good ole cornbread to go with the meal. Bill Hutka told members of the major repairs that are scheduled for the lodge, one of which is making the restrooms accessible for the handicapped. We are also looking at new front doors and getting the tile repaired around the dance floor. We voted to put $250 into our scholarship fund and the remaining amount (required donation from bingo) into the special account to help with repairs. The meeting adjourned at 7:50 p.m. Fraternally, Kathy Fritz Secretary/Reporter —SPJST-

Sewing Circle March report Ennis

The Ennis Sewing Circle met March 9, 2000. Twenty -three members were present. Our guests were Julius Podhrasky and Jerry Kohn.

President Sadie Kubin called the meeting to order. After the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence was observed in memory of Sister Stacie Hejny. We extend our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family. Secretary Vlasta Laznovsky read the minutes. In the absence of the treasurer, Vice President Dorothy Prachyl gave the treasurer's report. Both reports were approved as read. Sunshine Report Eleanora Pelzel sent a get well card and money gift to Sister Bessie Taraba; flowers to the funeral of Sister Stacie Hejny; and a birthday greeting to Sister Mary Sebestik. A get well card was sent to Sister Rosie Bednar. A thank you note was received from Ennis Sokol for the donation received from our Circle for the use of the building. We enjoy meeting in the nice place. "Happy Birthday" was sung to the March birthday celebrants. A lovely friendship quilt was quilted for Sister Dorothy Prachyl. Sister Adele Cikanek furnished the door prize. The lucky winner was Sister Bertha Podhrasky. Sister Geraldine Zhanel brought a bag full of good dill for us to take and Julius Podhrasky brought garlic for us to take and plant; mine is growing fast. Sister Anne Zvolanek brought lovely camillias for the table. It was good to have Anne back with us. She has missed several meetings. Donations Received Donations were received in memory of Stacie Hejny from Georgia Tupy, Rose Hejny, Sadie Kubin, Vlasta Laznovsky, Libbie Wisniewski, Dorothy Prachyl and Alice Roberts. Sister Dorothy Prachyl gave a donation for having a quilt quilted. Sisters, just a reminder to pay your dues if you have not paid them. Our next meeting will be April 13, 2000. A Dog Story

Lucky, Sister Libbie Wisniewski's golden retriever, is so amusing to watch. Last month, as 1 drove to Sister Georgia Tupy's house (next door to Libbie's house), Lucky came running to Georgia's flower bed with a six foot long limb in his mouth. He already had a smaller limb in the bed. He dug a small hole near the limb. We were sure he wanted to put the limbs into the small hole. No way could the limbs fit into that hole. One never knows. Lucky might just be a lucky dog. Alice T. Roberts, Reporter —SPJST-

SPJST Youth Program Summer Canip

Connect-the-Dots

(Third in a Series of Four) The SPJST makes summer camping trips available to its active young members. Each of the seven SPJST districts across the state has its own camp throughout Texas. Some districts have joint camp sessions. Camp is provided on the basis of participation in SPJST activities. To qualify for camp, young people must be SPJST members by October 31 of the year before the camp and must attend seven out of 12 youth meetings in the months preceding camp. Another way to qualify for camp is to attend seven out of 12 adult meetings in lodges where there are no youth clubs. Non-active youth members may attend camp for a fee of $85. Each camp is sponsored by the local district. Youth camp funds come from an annual allocation made by the SPJST Supreme Lodge. A number of professional assistants

are hired for instruction in archery, aquatics, horsemanship and as camp nurse. Much of the chaperoning and programming is done by parents and SPJST trained leaders. Adult leaders get training at an annual workshop held in March. Specialists teach leaders various crafts, camping fundamentals and team-building procedures applicable to other activities besides camping. A second workshop for high school youth club members is held during the first weekend in June. Leaders-InTraining (LIT) learn skills to assist their leaders at camp and in their youth clubs. ' To attend camp, an application must be completed and returned to the district youth counselor (DYC) no later than 20 days prior to the first day of camp. —SPJST-

Other names mentioned include the Mensiks, Koupas, Kubalas, Chuipks and Tejmls. During the business meeting of the Czech Heritage Society of Fort Bend County, the Frank J. Parma Award for the "Outstanding Volunteer" for the 1999 year went to Robert Roesner. The award was underwritten by the Parma family with a donation from Dostal's Jewelry. Roesner secured the most members and volunteered the greatest number of ours to Czech Heritage. He documented genealogical information in the Czech Republic, served as officer of CHS of Fort Bend and served on the Czech Heritage Society of Texas as membership chairman. Roesner corresponds with a genealogist in the Czech Republic.

Announcements An announcement was made of festivals the Fort Bend CHS will participate in for the coming year. These include the SPJST Lodge 88 celebration in Houston on March 26; Czech Fest in Rosenberg on May 5-7; and the East Bernard Festival on June 10. Further announcements were made concerning the Czech Music Symposium on March 4 at the Austin Scottish Rite Theater; the Czech Heritage of Texas Genealogy Conference on July 27-30 at the Brazos Center at Bryan/College Station; the Czech Heritage Society of Texas State meeting at Hillje on March 11. Two books were donated to the CHS library with Roesner donating "Karolinka" and Marie Cerny, "Kolovice." The Texas Czech Veterans book is available from Eakin Press, members were told. Senior Life: When You Need More How much is your life worth?

And how much did you insure it for? Two tough questions. Questions that get even tougher as you get older. Now, thanks to SPJST's two Senior Life insurance plans, there may be some answers for you. The SPJST Senior Life Plan is for people in good health who can correctly answer "no" to the general health questions on the application. The SPJST Senior Life Graded Benefit Plan is for people with some health problems but are still found to be eligible. This plan has some limitations on coverage. The Senior Life Graded Benefit provides an accidental death benefit for the full amount of the certificate immediately for the first three years. The death benefit from other causes is the refund of premiums, plus 20 percent. After

three years, both Senior Life plans provide exactly the same benefit. No doctor's examination is necessary and the coverage cannot be canceled, so long as premiums are paid. Moreover, the Senior Life plan has a guaranteed cash value and a certificate loan benefit. Under the terms of the Senior Life Plan, the smallest amount of insurance that you can purchase is $5,000. Just as an example, the cost per $1,000 coverage for a 63-year old male would be $6.23 monthly and $69.21 annually. For $5,000 insurance, that would amount to a monthly premium of $55.85 and an annual premium of $620.35. For more information on the SPJST Senior Life certificate or an application form, please contact your local lodge sales representative. —SPJST-

Czech Heritage Society of Fort Bend County receives historical presentation John Allwright was the speaker for the first meeting of the year for the Czech Heritage Society of Fort Bend County. The meeting was held a 2220 Fourth Street in Rosenberg with President Pat Parma presiding. Ted Kaspar introduced the speaker. Allwright gave a brief overview of the "Czech Influence in Rosenberg." He began at the beginning with Henry Rosenberg, a Scotsman and prosperous businessman in Galveston. Rosenberg gave great support to hospitals, schools, libraries, orphanages and churches. By 1890, railroads and come to what would become the city of Rosenberg. The first immigrants came form New York, Allwright said, followed by Czech and German immigrants. Rosenberg began as nine blocks by 14 blocks, ringed by Czech farms. He said these Czechs were very industrious with neat home sites, great spring and fall gardens with many fruit trees planted and chickens and cows for meats, milk and eggs. The Czechs, he said, usually belonged to Catholic, Brethren or Presbyterian Churches. Education was stressed so the idea of free public schools really appealed to the early Czech immigrants. Some of the Czechs referred to in Rosenberg were the Skripkas, Stavinohas and Talaseks and Mareshes. He mentioned that he had gone to school with Walter Skripka who was in the audience and the Stavinohas had owned and operated White House Grocery at the corner of Avenue G and First Street. Tom Talasek, father of Rosenberg city councilman Tom Talasek, and Binnie Babovec had a furniture store and his son, Albert refinished furniture. Frank Maresh owned a filling station on Avenue H at the end of that same block. He said the Juricka building was located where Steinocher Photography now stands. Kovar and Walenta were names on the board of the First National Bank at its inception; Frank Dedek had a pharmacy; the Urbishes, a saddle shop; and the Janaks owned a clothing store. Pete Kanak had the grocery store and Noskas, a cafe with the best chicken salad sandwiches, he recalled. Pochylas ran the meat market featuring hot sausage and other good foods while the Humpolas had a shoe shop, clothing store and Jerry Humpola did photography.
